I re-watched Halloween (1978)

Since I feel something special in The air this Fall, let's start this year's Halloween list off the right way, with the original night he came home.

As a child Michael Myers slaughtered his sister. 15 years later he's escaped his incarceration to wreak havoc in his old neighborhood, only now he's an unstoppable monster.

What can be said about the original Halloween that hasn't already been said? It's a horror film that spawned a franchise, an iconic monster and cemented John Carpenter as one of the greatest Horror filmmakers of all time. It's praised endlessly and it's on every best of horror and Holiday must watch list. It's a certified classic, much deservedly.

So, I figured I'd just ramble a bit about why it's a classic.

Michael Myers is simply written in the script as, "The Shape". He isn't to be considered human and he isn't subject to the laws of life and death. No matter how many times this film's sequels and reboots try and explain away his invincibility, it's something I think should be left ambiguous and without explanation. He's the Boogeyman. Someone has to be, and why shouldn't it be a kid from Haddonfield Illinois?

Director John Carpenter often wears upon his sleeve an affinity for lovecraftian horror. His apocalyptic trilogy is all about lovecraftian horror, in which the evil is beyond our comprehension. It's from somewhere beyond and the concept derives horror from humanity's comparative insignificance. Perhaps Michael Myers can be seen as unexplainable for this very reason. There is nothing about him that makes logical sense, and when facing this version of pure evil, we regular people are near helpless and dragged into his nightmare world.

John Carpenter is by far one of my personal favorite filmmakers. His use of wide shots can barely contain his imagination. His best films are anti-mainstream, which in turn are stolen by the mainstream. Even the missteps in his movies are shining with a bit of pride. And, on top of it all, as if to double down on talent, he's made some of the best scores in film history. Especially this one.

Carpenter's Halloween can be nit-picked and pulled apart in a few places, and it's aged a bit. (Even more so because of how often it's been stolen from since 1978.) Halloween surely isn't his best, scariest, coolest or most engaging film. But, what he created with this movie is something larger than the film itself. Like I said before, it created an iconic monster, burned it's score into our minds, and set a template for so many movies to follow.

But, really, John Carpenter changed the game of horror filmmaking altogether. Ushering into a new era for the genre.

Great way to start the spooky season.
