For it is through our willingness to suffer for God that we learn to love, as Christ has loved us in the sacrifice of the Cross. […] Sufferings can also serve to draw us closer to God. Because God is love, our yearnings for Him become a form of suffering when we do not possess Him in times of darkness; we suffer for love, and we find in the end that God is the fullness of love. If He were made to suffer for us through His only begotten Son (1 Jn 4:10), then we in turn are made to suffer for Him.
