No matter the outcome, please be courteous as possible to one another, and if that is not possible, then please just block and move on.

So I finished watching the stream from today recently (I had work so I had to stop it) and man I’m tired
cw:mention of Tom and some mild frustration with Tom (if you hate tom/if you love him don’t come for my head I have thoughts)
Listen I think Tom is an okay dude and I understand that he created Mianite and the idea of it but like,,, if he didn’t want to make it fun for all of his friends, don’t invite them to your world dude.
As someone who has been playing RPG’s for 5 or so years now, even if you present the situation, you don’t fudge rolls or cheat your way to Godhood that's not how it works and it is so exhausting to play with people like that. They always get the end say and you feel small and sidelined on the story you are also trying to write/create. It hurts even worse when they are friends of yours because you don’t want to be rude and be like “well can we explore this part of my backstory as a group?” without having it be about that person when it was your character that you wanted to explore.
Its one sided playing and I know Mianite isn’t super similar but I just for a little bit want to be able to sit down and watch a Mianite stream and be like “Oh are we getting some cool lore today? Or maybe a fun lil side quest with just One of the Gods and there followers?” Without having Tom there and making it a competition on a side story to build belief between God and Player.

anyways since im in a kinda petty mood if you’re ever looking for a mianite fanserver do NOT play on play.mianiterealm.com staff tends to be generally unsupportive downright shitty, players get away with rule breaking more often than not, especially if they have a rank, and both staff members and players can often be seen saying racist, homophobic, transphobic, and sexist things in chat with little to no repercussions. Admittedly I havent played on there in about a month and a half, but given ive been there since roughly 1.8 i really doubt a month and a half changed things much. besides that, if you’re looking for an rpg survial server to play of (it itself says is an rpg server), its not what you’re looking for. it’s more like factions than anything else, except theres only 3 teams. if you want further information on why not to join this server feel free to dm me asking for my personal experiences (most are small problems but theres a lot more than what i can very clearly recall, as i’ve been there for a long time, but they add up) anyways just a warning to those out there looking for servers!!

Gamers as Fledgling Dimension Hoppers
It’s been suggested in the science fiction and science fantasy genres that when you hop into a virtual reality console or even just sit down to play a game, you’re doing a bit more than just escaping reality. You’re actually entering a new one.
It may be cute, primitive, and predictable - the whole story of that world might be played out in a matter of hours, then repeated - but sometimes, a spontaneous element rises into the mix. That’s where you get choose your own adventure games, RPG’s, and what I would call super-RPG’s like D&D, where the world of the game is so complex and adaptable that no computer created by man can process it; it requires a human game master to weave the threads of fate. That’s where you get into God simulations, man playing God and players playing creatures in the confines of God’s world.
When you dwell in another world, you get life experiences. You come back smarter, stronger, or discouraged, maybe wounded. It runs the whole spectrum. “It doesn’t matter; it isn’t real” is an argument made from ignorance. If you’ve ever cared about a game, you’ve probably felt a piece of your mind get pulled away from the world you’re “supposed” to care about, caught up in daydreams of that other place. You’ve found yourself straddling the border between your living flesh-world and anywhere from one to hundreds of other worlds, some of them even more visceral and compelling than your own.
Of course, the same goes for books, films, and other kinds of “portals,” but the thing with games is that they directly involve you in the shaping of the world; they draw attention to the idea that you’re more than just a spectator, but an active participant in how things play out, and I think that’s really important for people who don’t feel involved in the affairs of Earth. Now they can make an impact. The confidence this breeds in a person can be life-changing. Even so, the world of a game is useful for more than just cultivating virtues for the “real world.” It has a fate of its own that must be tended to. If you go about gaming didactically, just looking for life experiences to harvest for Earth, you’ll get those experiences, but you’ll get them less intensely and meaningfully than you would if you made yourself believe, for a little while, that the world of the game was the only world that mattered and that in order to be satisfied, you needed to see the events of that world unfold properly.
There’s the idea that every fictional world has a secret life of its own; that by tunneling deep enough into the annals of the collective unconscious, you could come out the other side into the living, breathing world of your deepest fantasy and have a life there.
But as Mianite S2 has touched on, you might be a little disenchanted after spending a while in such a world. On the scale Ianite used to categorize the power and complexity of life forms, you might be a 3 or a 4 while even the most developed beings in that world might be a 2 at best. After all, you’d have come from a world built of countless molecules and they’d be natives of a polygonal plane running on simple physics and rendered in rough artistic strokes. You might be unable to express to them how it felt to live in a higher dimension and you might miss the richness; the variety of that place. You might realize, in regret, that you were born and rooted there for a reason.

"and i seriously hope that one day, when all of this is over and death and destruction aren't lurking around every corner- that we can go down to the docks and fish without a care in the world. to sit by each other's side from sunset to sunrise without a single fear. it would be amazing just to have that, even just once."
funky lil bday gift for my homie Mars from the RPG! :D I debated about redrawing a moment from the SMP but i settled on this idea of that in the middle of what's been a huge period of uncertainty and constant fear of losing it all for them, that I imagine all they could want could be found in something so mundane, so peaceful as just sitting by a lake, as the sun rises

oh boy as someone who was into og mcyt - I completely agree that dsmp has had a wider impact, and that should be recognized! I think it's awesome. but how quickly history is forgotten....
one of the very first minecraft series to catch on was actually initially just a survival server that turned into a roleplay.
Shadow of Israphel was a little different, of course – I'm pretty sure it was styled like more of an rpg, worked on by a whole team behind the scenes past the first few dozen episodes, like Aphmau's "minecraft" series. It didn't involve particularly serious rp for the most part, Lewis and Simon were in it for the comedy. But it was an emerging story told through minecraft videos, and it was popular. The first episode, released in 2010, has millions of views.
However, what its creators did afterwards DID have more serious rp. The Yogscast, expanding beyond Lewis and Simon, had dozens and dozens of (mostly, modded) minecraft series around 2012-2015. enter yoglabs, the tekkit series, and the Blackrock Chronicle.
on the yogscast tekkit server, there were several different series - playthroughs that doubled as mod showcases, for a large part. Creators did their own content, occasionally interacting to play pranks etc. there were generally hermitcraft levels of "lore" and rp, if a little more present. Except for Rythian and Zoey's series, Blackrock.
which did have casual gameplay. it had comedy, and showed off several mods. but people watched it for the story, and the roleplay. it was a story, with a script and everything! and it wove itself into the minecraft universe – Rythian and Zoey's characters had history with the End, and wove mc mechanics into the story. I wouldn't give them an oscar, or anything, but they were good actors who played out heavy scenarios (notably their relationship was a romance, and the ccs are not at all together).
at the same time, other yogs series were exploring roleplay – their dedicated mod showcase series, yoglabs, became a more subtle story, and a bit later flux buddies became a looong series about evil clones and slow magical corruption.
also not something I watched, but Mianite (captain sparklez and others) was modded minecraft content dedicated to roleplay as well - more of the rpg style, run behind the scenes sort again, with less of a focus on acting and individual storylines, but still I think the main draw was the story.
I'm SURE there's other stuff I didn't know about or don't remember that had rp - iirc dantdm also gave his mod showcase series a story, for example
tldr:
the dsmp is the first popular vanilla minecraft server roleplay, but it's not the first in general by a long shot - shadow of israphel was out there almost as soon as it was possible to play multiplayer minecraft, and other creators were making roleplay series on smps too. minecraft's not new to being a storytelling medium
mmmm. might have a non-dsmp-side-of-mcyt hot take.
