One Hundred Years Ago, Cincinnati Slid Into The ‘Roaring Twenties’ With Optimistic Celebrations
The “Roaring Twenties” arrived in Cincinnati bathed in cautious optimism.
The War, the Great War, the war not yet known as World War I, was over and almost all our troops had returned home. The pandemic influenza of 1919 was just a memory. The Reds were baseball’s world champions. Business was humming along and, with railroads nationally still tangled due to wartime materiel demands, Cincinnati actually benefitted from old-time river traffic. The Enquirer [1 January 1920] summed up the world of 1920 as “Bolshevism, strikes and presidential possibilities.”
The brand-new Hamilton County Courthouse, dedicated on 18 October 1919, overlooked the dried and drained remains of the old Miami and Erie Canal, as construction began on the “Rapid Transit Loop” later dismissed as Cincinnati’s doomed subway. By June 1920, nearly 15 percent of subway construction was complete, even as land acquisition continued. The 1920 City Directory saw big things ahead:
“This improvement is a belt railway, touching the outlying districts of the city and suburban towns, designed to more conveniently admit interurban railway tines and connect the various lines of street railway with the central part of the city. It will tend to induce citizens to use the hill-top sections for residence purposes and relieve down-town congestion.”
Nationally, Prohibition of alcohol sales kicked in on January 17, but Cincinnati, like most of the country, had been living with a wartime ban on alcohol for nearly a year. Still, the wartime ban affected only the sale of alcohol, not manufacture or transport, so New Year revelers in Cincinnati brought their own bottles to the many downtown parties. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer [1 January 1920]:
“Had not the Government given its permission for the owners of trusty ‘private stocks’ to keep their stocks for their own use? Had not the same Government given permission for these owners to tilt their bottles of ‘private stocks’ to their own lips, as often as they desired? And had not hotel proprietors said, solemnly, that they had no way of preventing their guests from taking a taste or two at New-Year’s tables, if it was from their ‘private’ bottles?”
Despite a year as a dry town, Cincinnatians had not yet generally adopted illegal and dangerous tactics to get a drink. The first speakeasy doesn’t show up until much later in the year and there are few reports here of wood-alcohol poisoning. The Cincinnati Post [1 January 1920] found that a book by Albert A. Hopkins titled “Home-Made Beverages,” including recipes for alcoholic concoctions, had been checked out of the Public Library only six times since wartime prohibition took effect. (It appears that this book is no longer among the collections of the Public Library.)
Perhaps the wildest of the year-end revelries was the frolic staged by the Cincinnati Grain and Hay Exchange in the ballroom of the Hotel Gibson. Jazz and ragtime music propelled dancers throughout the event, interspersed with some songs performed by Exchange executives in black face and an assortment of vaudeville acts. Although the Exchange celebrated a good year, with record deliveries of grain and hay, the celebration carried the ominous echo of the band playing as the Titanic sank. All of this grain and hay, after all, was fuel for the horses that still trundled over the city’s streets, dodging the new and increasingly popular horseless carriages.
The Traction Company shifted schedules an hour later than normal to accommodate party-goers returning home after midnight. Cincinnati’s streets were alive with loud and dangerous noisemakers. The Enquirer reported:
“With whistles, bells, revolvers and noise-making devices of every conceivable nature they brought the lusty infant, 1920, into existence.”
For those of a less exuberant disposition, Cincinnati also offered a massive poultry show at Music Hall, where Willinez Farm of Holmdell, New York, won the Sussex Cup for their exhibition of speckled poultry.
Before the parties got rolling, civic leaders gathered on New Year’s Eve to debate plans affecting downtown congestion. Traffic jams had become such a concern that many expressed a belief that Cincinnati’s future growth hang in the balance. According to the Enquirer [1 January 1920]:
“These officials are of the opinion that the plan of one-way traffic streets of Fourth and Sixth streets, as proposed by Councilman [Michael] Mullen in an ordinance he will submit to City Council next Tuesday for approval, is a step in the right direction and should result in better traffic conditions in the shopping district.”
Still, according to civic leaders surveyed by the Enquirer, Mullen’s plan was a stop-gap measure and real relief would arrive only when the subway reached down to Fourth Street.
In addition to shopping, downtown Cincinnati was the entertainment district and the many theaters were split between motion pictures and live acts. On New Year’s Day 1920, the Walnut Theater was showing “Mind The Paint Girl” a silent film drama starring Anita Stewart. That film is now “lost” with no known surviving copies. The Strand enticed viewers to “The Thunderbolt,” a silent film starring Katherine MacDonald. At the Olympic Burlesque Theater, which advertised itself as “clean-cut classy,” the Broadway Girls held forth in a performance the Olympic declared safe enough for your “mother, wife or sweetheart.” The Empress Theater, not yet harboring its famous chili parlor, offered “Round The Town,” billed as “the giggly girly show.”
The big New Year’s game was Harvard versus Oregon in the Rose Bowl. (Harvard won, 7 to 6.) But most of the sports pages were given over to predictions on a boxing match between Jack Dempsey and Georges Carpentier – a match that would not take place for another year.

Aug 1, 2017 Solar-powered US Border Wall with Mexico
President Trump has come up with a new idea for covering the costs of a proposed border wall between the United States and Mexico: build it with solar panels.
At a White House meeting Tuesday, Donald Trump floated the concept of “beautiful structures,” 40 to 50 feet high, that generate clean electricity from the sun — and would help cover the cost of the project, according to comments reported by Axios.
solar-powered Border Wall between USA and Mexico: image courtesy of Gleason Partners
The U.S. border with Mexico is almost 2,000 miles long. Donald Trump has said his wall will cover 1,000 miles, with natural obstacles doing the rest of the work.
Gleason Partners submitted a proposal to build a solar border wall, generating two megawatts of electricity per mile, at a cost of about $7.5 million per mile.
Fixing the panels vertically could lead to an efficiency loss of around 50%, the analysis says, with the angle at which the sun would hit the wall losing an additional 10% in efficiency.
However less than 2% of the U.S. population live within 40 miles of the US – Mexico border.

US Architects React to Border Wall RFP
With President Donald Trump taking further executive action to build the controversial wall across the Mexican-American border, protesters are beginning to rally and speak out.
At Yale University, specifically, students are displaying an anti-Trump message on campus.
The phrase “We won’t build your wall” is written on large windows at the school of architecture.
In the aftermath of the 2016 election, the American Institute of Architects issued an incendiary statement of congratulations and support for the yet-unknown infrastructure agenda of the Trump administration, state Yale School of Architecture professor Peggy Deamer and students David Langdon and Melinda Agron in an op-ed piece in the Architectural Record.
The architecture community loudly and publicly denounced what they saw as a “greedy and spineless compromise” of professional responsibilities, and #NotMyAIA began trending on Twitter. Within days, AIA CEO Robert Ivy rescinded the organization’s statement and apologized.
(Also, see our post from Feb 6 + 5, 2017 further down this page – ‘Major Architects Object to President Trump’s Travel Ban’)
Two weeks ago President Trump issued a preliminary RFP—request for proposals—for design prototypes of the long-promised border wall. In the days that followed, dozens of prominent architecture and engineering firms threw their hats in for a chance at the multi-billion-dollar project.
The concerns that architects voiced in November 2016 of professional collusion with the administration’s partisan agenda proved dishearteningly prescient and well-founded.
The Architecture Lobby—a forward-thinking alternative to the AIA organized in 2013 by a collective of students, practitioners, and academics—has proposed that March 10, the day the first round of border wall proposals are due, cannot witness business as usual.

Feb 14, 2017 Four Midcentury Landmarks Revitalised
The Hall of Science, Queens Richards Medical Research Laboratories, Pennsylvania Greeley Memorial Laboratory, Yale University Manton Research Center, Massachusetts
The Hall of Science, in Queens, New York, is one example of the sculptural exuberance of many midcentury buildings. Designed by Harrison and Abramovitz Architects for the 1964 World’s Fair, it was conceived as a permanent museum devoted to science and technology. An eggcrate-like reinforced-concrete wall undulates and bends to define a nearly 90-foot-tall volume, reports the Architectural Record. Todd Schliemann, a partner at New York–based Ennead, who completed the hall’s restoration in 2015, describes its interior as abstract and almost scaleless, like outer space.
The Hall of Science, in Queens, New York: photo © Jeff Goldberg / ESTO
Not all midcentury buildings exhibit the same kind of adventurous and organic forms found at the Hall of Science. Instead, another significant work from this period—Louis Kahn’s Richards Medical Research Laboratories (1961) at the University of Pennsylvania—demonstrates a commitment to order and rigor articulated in brick, concrete, and glass. The building was recently designated a National Historic Landmark.
Many scholars have noted that Kahn’s model for this open working environment may well have been the architecture studio, says David Fixler, a principal in the Boston office of EYP Architecture & Engineering. His firm created the preservation standards for Richards and performed the first phase of the still-ongoing project. (The Philadelphia office of Atkin Olshin Schade Architects won a competitive bid for the subsequent phases.)
Christopher Williams, a New Haven, Connecticut–based architect, faced many of the same problems as the Richards team in his recent renovation of Greeley Memorial Laboratory, a 24,000-square-foot research facility designed by Paul Rudolph for Yale University’s School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. Since its completion in 1959, Greeley had suffered a number of unsympathetic alterations.
Pietro Belluschi’s Manton Research Center (1973) is located on the campus of the Clark Art Institute, in Williamstown, Massachusetts. This granite-clad library and study facility has a somewhat blocky exterior, Manton was “well-conceived,” says the architect for the just-completed renovation, Annabelle Selldorf, principal of Selldorf Architects in New York (acting with Gensler).

Feb 6 + 5, 2017 Major Architects Object to President Trump’s Travel Ban
Three architecture firms have released responses to President Donald Trump’s executive order “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States” issued on Friday, reports https://ift.tt/10WVIg7.
Studio Libeskind, founded by Daniel Libeskind, AIA, and based in New York and Zürich, and Steven Holl, FAIA, both issued statements earlier this week criticizing the ban.
American-Norwegian firm Snøhetta also criticized Donald Trump’s executive order.
“Our office of 44 people based in NYC & Beijing has a staff representing over 18 different languages. We are dedicated to an architecture of openness encouraging human potential.
This action, by the loser of our citizens’ popular vote, actively works against the diversity and dialogue essential to this mission and violates the United States Constitution. This president who repeatedly tells lies, fights human potential for good and defies the constitution must be impeached.
We have now worked on five continents pursuing our mission (currently working on our first African project, a library for a new campus in Malawi, which is deeply rooted in our core principles). Today, more than ever, we need to pursue our values; green architecture for the environment of future generations, formation of social space, and realization of new spatial energies.
– Steven Holl
“The Trump travel ban is an affront to our freedom and core values,” he said. “It affects our employees, colleagues and collaborators.”
– Daniel Libeskind
Also US School of Architecture have reacted:
Harvard Graduate School of Design:
“Let me be clear that the intolerance and prejudice signaled by this action cut against the core values that the GSD stands for. Its spirit runs counter to our collective commitment to inclusion and to cultivating a diversity of people, ideas, and perspectives, the necessary ingredients of healthy and productive discourse and responsible citizenship.”
– Dean Mohsen Mostafavi, an Iranian-American
UCLA School of Art & Architecture:
“The Dean’s office condemns in the strongest possible terms the executive order around visas and immigration released by the President this past weekend.” – David Roussève, Interim Dean
The Southern California Institute of Architecture and Taubman College, University of Michigan also release statements:

Jan 28, 2017 Assemblywoman seeks to bar border wall companies from doing business in New York
With Donald Trump taking executive actions to make good on his campaign promise to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, one New York legislator has proposed a pushback, reports Metro.
Assemblywoman Nily Rozic, who represents eastern Queens, introduced a bill on Thursday that would ban the state from doing business with companies involved in building the border wall.
Under the bill, the state would track businesses involved with the wall and prevent them from obtaining in-state contracts or assets. New York currently has similar restrictions on companies that boycott Israel or do business in Iran.

President-elect Donald Trump taps two rich developers to oversee infrastructure plan
Donald Trump has chosen Richard LeFrak and Steve Roth, “two of the wealthiest men in real estate” according to Forbes, to head a “council of builders and engineers”. This new council will be tasked with overseeing Trump’s plan to invest $1 trillion in infrastructure, reports archinect. The Republican infrastructure plan relies heavily on private-public partnerships, so it’s not really a surprise that developers will be involved.
Roth founded Vornado, one of the most prominent real estate trusts in New York and Washington. Tornado is merging with JBG Smith, which is one of the shortlisted bidders for the development of a new FBI headquarters, a $2 billion contract. The LeFrak family has played a major role in developing New York, New Jersey, Los Angeles and Miami.

Shaping a Resilient Future Through One Water
Water
Introduction
In an era of mounting global water stress and increasing pressures on the planet’s water resources, sustainable solutions are urgently needed to ensure that our water supplies are as resilient as possible. The World Health Organization estimates that half of the world’s population will live in water-stressed areas as soon as 2025. As populations surge and the demand for water intensifies, the challenge to provide reliable, clean water supplies grows increasingly more difficult. Fifty percent of the world’s population relies on groundwater as their source of drinking water, and critical underground aquifers are being depleted at an alarming rate.
While the challenges may seem daunting, Tetra Tech has never been more prepared to face them. We have the cutting-edge tools, advanced data analytics, and scientific knowledge necessary to develop smarter and more efficient solutions than ever before.
Tetra Tech’s foundational work in water is the underpinning of our industry-leading, integrated water management practice. Our legacy of solving complex water challenges started in 1966, when Tetra Tech’s four founders—each representing a distinct scientific discipline—used their academic passion to tackle complex projects and deliver innovative solutions for clients.
Fast-forward to today, and Tetra Tech is at the forefront of applying technology and analytics to the development of resilient, sustainable solutions. In 2019 the industry trade magazine, Engineering News-Record (ENR), ranked Tetra Tech #1 in Water for the 16th consecutive year in its Top 500 Design Firms issue. Our institutional knowledge in water—gained over decades of experience—has enabled us to take the lead in addressing the imminent water challenges we all now face.
The value of a One Water approach
Tetra Tech is actively engaged in Leading with Science® to develop global One Water solutions that address complex water issues using a holistic, integrated approach. A One Water approach recognizes the water cycle as an integrated system and embraces the view that all water holds value. One Water shifts from a linear model of water management to a circular strategy, emphasizing recovery, recycling, and reuse instead of discharge. Wastewater, long seen as merely a byproduct of the treatment process, is now considered a valuable resource that can be recycled and used for irrigation, industrial operations, and other purposes.
Tetra Tech carefully designs solutions that embrace this approach to achieve multiple objectives—including more reliable water supplies, cleaner water sources, and greater long-term water security.
The following examples highlight specific challenges in the water sector and the solutions Tetra Tech has delivered to ensure safe, abundant water supplies for communities around the world.
Enhanced groundwater reliability in Southern California
Groundwater resources from California’s Central Basin are a vital component in Los Angeles County’s mission of supplying the drinking water needs of approximately 4 million people. To sustain the Central Basin water supplies, groundwater recharge is critical. Local agencies traditionally have replenished the basin’s aquifers using a combination of stormwater, imported water, and recycled water, but long-term drought, increased demand, and environmental restrictions have made importing water an unreliable option.
To replace the imported water component and increase the availability of high-quality water to recharge the Central Basin, the Water Replenishment District of Southern California (WRD) selected the design-build team of JF Shea and Tetra Tech to complete the Albert Robles Center for Recycling and Environmental Learning (ARC) and the Advanced Water Treatment Facility (AWTF).
“By putting this project online, WRD creates a local, sustainable supply of water for replenishing the groundwater system,” said Tetra Tech Senior Vice President Steve Tedesco. “WRD also becomes independent from buying imported water from Northern California or the Colorado River. The cost of imported water has risen tremendously over the last 10 years and will continue to get more expensive with increasing scarcity. The ARC project mitigates that risk.”
The ARC AWTF treats tertiary effluent from the San Jose Creek Water Reclamation Plant (SJCWRP) to near-distilled water quality using high-end technology solutions, including ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, and ultraviolet radiation disinfection with an advanced oxidation process. The treated, ultraclean AWTF effluent is then blended with tertiary effluent from SJCWRP and conveyed to the Montebello Forebay Spreading Grounds to percolate into the soil and replenish groundwater resources.
A water lifecycle approach in Mongolia
In addition to periods of drought and global population growth, deteriorating water quality conditions also can limit available drinking water supplies. Following years of rapid population growth, Mongolia’s capital city of Ulaanbaatar faces significant water supply and water quality challenges. Mounting water demand is intersecting with declining regional water availability, driving an urgent need to develop new water supplies.
Ulaanbaatar’s sole source of drinking water is the groundwater aquifers along the upper reaches of the Tuul River. Studies indicate that any additional extraction from those upstream aquifers will diminish river flow and cause portions of the river—which flows through the city—to run dry. Consequently, new water supply development must target groundwater aquifers downstream from the city. That strategy is complicated by the fact that poorly treated discharge from Ulaanbaatar’s outdated central wastewater treatment plant has contaminated the Tuul River, potentially introducing harmful contaminants into the downstream aquifers.
Tetra Tech is working with the Millennium Challenge Corporation and the government of Mongolia to create a more sustainable, long-term water and wastewater system.
Tetra Tech is working with the Millennium Challenge Corporation and the government of Mongolia to create a more sustainable, long-term water and wastewater system. Key components of the water supply project include new aquifer development in downstream wells, a state-of-the-art plant to purify drinking water, and a water recycling facility to treat wastewater effluent for reuse.
“By addressing source water, reclaimed water, and wastewater, the program touches on the whole water life cycle in Ulaanbaatar,” said Edward Gardiner, Tetra Tech vice president and project manager. The new water recycling facility will treat wastewater effluent for reuse in the cooling towers of two of the city’s combined heat and power plants, supplying up to 70 percent of their water needs and conserving groundwater resources. A proposed central wastewater treatment plant in Ulaanbaatar will dramatically improve the quality of effluent discharged into the Tuul River, addressing the source of pollution and helping to enhance water quality in the new downstream well field.
A diversification strategy in drought-prone San Antonio
In arid regions, diversified water supplies are essential to making communities self-reliant and able to manage periods of water stress. In San Antonio, Texas, diversification is a key approach the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) uses to ensure future water supply reliability for the city—one of the largest and fastest growing in the nation.
Tetra Tech has provided 20 years of continuous support to SAWS to help diversify its water supply sources. Tetra Tech was the design engineer for SAWS's brackish groundwater desalination plant (H2Oaks), which uses reverse-osmosis technology to treat brackish groundwater extracted from deep in the Wilcox Aquifer to produce potable water. Using an innovative design, our engineers were able to improve efficiency and extract an additional 1 million gallons of fresh water from the system each day.
The latest component in the SAWS diversification strategy is the Central Water Integration Pipeline (CWIP), a water supply project that will integrate treated groundwater delivered from 142 miles away to help supplement SAWS's water supplies. Tetra Tech is the lead designer for the CWIP project, providing design, bid, and construction administration services.
“The project includes approximately four miles of new pipeline with two miles of tunneling through urban areas, improvements to three existing pump stations, two new water storage tanks, and a 48-million-gallon-per-day water treatment plant at the Agua Vista site in San Antonio that will treat the water to match the existing water quality in the SAWS distribution system,” said Tetra Tech Project Manager Leslie Turner.
When CWIP is complete, the latest addition to San Antonio’s diversified water strategy will provide roughly 20 percent of the City’s annual water needs.
An integrated water and sewer approach in Miami-Dade County
The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (MDWASD) is the largest water and sewer utility in the southeastern United States and serves nearly 2.3 million residents, including thousands of daily visitors. To continue to fulfill its vision of continuous delivery of high-quality drinking water and wastewater services in compliance with all regulatory requirements, MDWASD launched an integrated multiyear capital improvement program (CIP) that incorporates asset management, system growth, climate change resiliency, and other considerations.
Tetra Tech provided engineering services for the CIP, focusing on integrated master planning for water, wastewater, groundwater, and reclaimed water. Tetra Tech’s planning work considered the interconnectedness of these water resources—maximizing the value of each component of the water cycle.
“Overall, our cumulative efforts embraced sustainable solutions to achieve efficient long-term water supply management,” said Ken Caban, Tetra Tech vice president and southeast Florida regional manager.
One aspect involved evaluating the technical and economic viability of reusing reclaimed water for different purposes. Based on a mandate that MDWASD eliminate ocean outfall discharges of wastewater, Tetra Tech conducted a reuse feasibility study to determine the cost and feasibility of various uses, which included golf course irrigation, industrial reuse, and recharging wetlands in Everglades National Park.
“Ultimately, we determined the best opportunity was to reuse that water for industrial cooling at a Florida Power and Light facility,” said Tetra Tech Senior Project Manager Diana Santander. “Doing so will help reduce groundwater withdrawals, conserving those resources for better and more efficient uses.”
Tetra Tech also focused on optimizing groundwater extractions for more efficient use and developed a facilities master plan for water treatment. Ken said, “As an alternative to building costly new water treatment plants, we identified investments in asset management and rehabilitating existing plants to allow reliable operation for the next 20 to 50 years.”
High-tech solutions to reducing water loss in Jordan
While tremendous technological advancements have been made in replenishing groundwater supplies through reuse and reinjection, the World Bank estimates that up to 35 percent of potable water supplies globally are lost through leaks in distribution systems. Jordan is one of the most water-stressed countries in the world, with diminishing freshwater supplies and rising water demand. Unsustainable extraction rates are exhausting groundwater resources, and roughly half of the water produced by Jordan’s utilities is unaccounted for as a result of leakage, theft, and other management challenges. Increasing energy prices have led to higher water production costs, and an influx of more than one million refugees from regional conflicts has heightened the need for effective water sector management and governance.
The Water Management Initiative (WMI), funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), supports the government of Jordan in addressing these imminent water challenges and avoiding a looming water crisis. USAID engaged Tetra Tech to implement WMI, helping Jordan improve its water sector management and enhance the sustainability of its water supply systems.
Tetra Tech’s primary focus is working with Jordan’s water utilities and other water management entities to upgrade their measurement and management systems and help them function more efficiently. David Favazza, Tetra Tech ARD senior associate and home office project manager for the Jordan WMI, said, “With so much water going missing in their distribution systems, a big part of our effort is reducing that loss.”
Specifically, Tetra Tech is supporting the Jordan Valley Authority in developing an effective water loss management strategy for the King Abdullah Canal, the country’s most important water conveyance system for supplying irrigation and municipal needs. Tetra Tech is also working with the Ministry of Water and Irrigation to identify unauthorized groundwater withdrawals in the Jordan highlands, where significant groundwater depletion is occurring.
“The solutions leverage advanced technologies such as satellite-based remote sensing to identify illegal groundwater withdrawals in the highlands and Doppler technology to accurately measure flows and pinpoint leaks and theft in the King Abdullah Canal,” David said. “But to really be lasting, any solutions need to be driven by broader systems that incentivize improved performance and ensure transparency and accountability. That’s where the biggest gains will happen in the long term. So, in addition to introducing new technologies, we are helping Jordan improve water governance and management systems.”
Data analytics optimize Anchorage’s water and wastewater utility
With the advances in technology, utilities can literally collect trillions of data points each year. More data is not always better data, as the Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility (AWWU) discovered. AWWU engaged Tetra Tech to help improve the reliability and efficiency of the utility’s treatment processes, water distribution, and wastewater collection.
Robert Ivanovic, Tetra Tech control systems expert, said, “As more data become available, data quality is increasingly important. One of the issues in Anchorage was that their system was collecting too much information. They were so inundated with data, that the information had become useless. So, a component of the project was to focus only on relevant data.”
AWWU owns and operates three water treatment facilities, three wastewater treatment plants, and about 1,600 miles of pipeline and associated facilities. The improvements were part of AWWU’s vision to implement industry best practices and reduce the overall cost of ownership without jeopardizing operational capabilities.
The Tetra Tech team approached the project by performing a full condition assessment of the SCADA system and its users. “SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, which essentially monitors the daily operations of the treatment plant,” said Rob. “We analyzed how AWWU staff conducts day-to-day operations and maintains the system, and then we looked at the technology itself to see how it was implemented and how it is used.”
Resilience issues were discovered within the organizational framework of AWWU’s staffing structure. “One person might hold necessary information, creating single points of failure in the system,” Rob said. “Our plan identified this risk and provided an alternative that would reorganize this structure, prioritizing operational improvements and situational awareness.”
Tetra Tech’s strategy was to map the SCADA functionality into the future focused on critical data, maintenance and operations, and a robust network design with the ability to feasibly implement future technology add-ons.
Improved data analytics have allowed AWWU to view its systemwide treatment, water quality, distribution, energy consumption, and chemical usage more holistically and make better management decisions
Improved data analytics have allowed AWWU to view their systemwide treatment, water quality, distribution, energy consumption, and chemical usage more holistically and make better management decisions, according to Rob. “AWWU can be more proactive and use predictive maintenance to pinpoint leaks or identify water quality issues in the system. They can also look at historical data and analyze trends to know how to be more efficient as a utility.”
Real-time data equals real-time savings in Louisville
More than 800 communities across the United States have combined sewer systems designed to transport both sanitary waste and stormwater through the same pipes to the wastewater treatment plant. That means a rain event could overwhelm the wastewater collection and treatment capacities and the untreated wastewater would flow directly into waterways, creating potential health risks. The capital expenditures of conventional solutions to capture the additional volume could become cost prohibitive for a public utility.
Similar to the way traffic lights on surface streets route vehicles to the least congested areas, Csoft works with sensors, weather forecasts, and monitoring data to move the wastewater through networks that have additional capacity.
The Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) in Kentucky faced similar challenges and hired Tetra Tech (QIB) to explore alternative solutions. Tetra Tech’s team of modelers, mathematicians, and water engineers had developed Csoft®, a propietary model-based predictive control tool that minimizes sewer overflows and flooding risks. Similar to the way traffic lights on surface streets route vehicles to the least congested areas, Csoft works with sensors, weather forecasts, and monitoring data to move the wastewater through networks that have additional capacity.
“The biggest challenge we faced with Csoft,” said Martin Pleau, Tetra Tech Csoft design engineer, “was to acquire and validate the data, simulate the model in real time, solve the optimization problem, and apply the optimal control set points at the local facilities—all in less than 5 minutes.”
Tetra Tech’s initial real-time control (RTC) feasibility studies for MSD using Csoft showed significant reductions in the number of combined sewer overflows at a relatively low cost by maximizing the storage and conveyance capacities within the existing system.
“RTC is now an integral part of MSD’s plan to continue to reduce overflows,” said Angela Akridge, chief engineer at MSD. “The optimization provided by Csoft allows us to be more resilient, and the more than $200 million we’ve not spent on traditional overflow storage at these facilities has allowed us to invest that money into other critical infrastructure, providing safe, clean waterways for our community.”
In April 2019, Tetra Tech and MSD won the prestigious Franz Edelman Award, which recognizes the improvements that operational research and analytics are making in the way people live and work around the globe. The Csoft solution has been in successful operation in Louisville since 2006 and has withstood the test of time and changing climate. It also has been successfully implemented in other locations within the United States, in addition to Canada and France.
Smarter solutions for a water-secure future
The water challenges are significant, but Tetra Tech believes that in the face of great challenges come tremendous opportunities. Each year, more examples of One Water solutions are put into practice as communities increasingly recognize the benefit of managing water in more integrated and sustainable ways. By embracing intelligent water resources planning that considers all phases of the water cycle, we can build more resilient water systems and help ensure a more stable water future.

About Drake’s Brewing
Since 1989, Drake’s has earned its reputation as a repository for excellent brewers and excellent beer. Lind departed San Leandro in 1998, but left his brewery in the hands of men and women who would earn countless medals at Great American Beer Fest, the World Beer Cup, the California State Fair, and many others. Over the years, the beers naturally moved from their roots in the English-style to being true West Coast style ales with an abundance of fresh Pacific Northwest hops, top quality malt, and a neutral California Ale yeast strain that allows the flavors and aromas of the top quality malts and hops to shine through and gives the beer a clean, dry finish. The people loved it all, and their increasing thirsts helped Drake’s to grow tank by tank, year by year. Drake’s Owners John Martin and Roy Kirkorian
In 2008, the life of the brewery came full circle. John Martin [the same man who walked with Lind through the empty tractor factory in 1989], with his business partner Roy Kirkorian, took over the brewery. With a stellar line up of brews, Drake’s has grown in both production and distribution. We progressed from being available only within the Bay Area, to distribution throughout California. Drake’s has become a staple of California’s brewing community, with the time, trust, investment, and the community of people surrounding the brewery.
In 2011, the Drake’s Barrel House Taproom opened in the shadow of the Brewhouse in San Leandro. The Barrel House serves as the tasting room and retail home of the brewery. All of Drake’s core and limited brews, as well countless experimental or one-off batches can be found here, fresh on tap. Here, at what we affectionately call “DBH,” our brewers regularly tip their elbow with the wider team of Drake’s employees and guests who want to experience the brewery first hand. The Barrel House is so named for the hundreds of wine and spirit barrels that adorn the walls; conveniently, you can taste the latest batch of barrel aged brews that our Specialty Beer Program has prepared in eclectic, limited batches.
In 2015, we debuted the Drake’s Dealership in Downtown Oakland. A project two years in the making, the Dealership was constructed [much like our brewery]in the shell of a former business, this time a Dodge Dealership and Repair Shop. The beer garden and full service restaurant was built largely by reclaimed and repurposed wood and steel from the former dealership’s structure. Our Dealership, in a short amount of time, has become renowned for it’s excellent food menu, regularly featuring locally sourced, farm fresh, and rare seasonal ingredients. The structure of the beer garden and bar area have also received acclaim for their beautiful industrial/urban design and style
As part of our company philosophy, we work to do good things with our great beer. The First Friday of every month we host a block party in our parking lot in honor of a local educational foundation or non-profit organization. The First Friday’s are a throwback to the Friday BBQ’s Lind would host with his friends and supporters, and we are proud to continue that tradition and support the East Bay Community that we call home. In 2016 we launched our Kick Back Program, where a portion of our proceeds for our Summer Limited release beer is donated to a local organization. Our first year, in cooperation with the East Bay Regional Parks District, was a resounding success, and we are looking forward to our partnership continuing in 2017.

Drake T Shirt Cheap
A 7th grader at George Junior High School in The state of texas affirms he was compelled to cover up his Celebrity Battles drake t shirt as it had a snapshot of any weapon into it - which was just as well violent for school. Our enormous design catalog will offer you the ideal humorous saying t shirt to get the job done, and then in the t-shirt size you want (this site offers up to 3XL dimensions! ) If you want to get estimated sizes , go ahead and check out our sizing dimension chart ! School leaders said that they asked Southern to zip up his jacket to cover the image, as the district handbook bans symbols oriented toward violence” - and, though he wasn't reprimanded, punishments can be doled out for such dress code infractions. So, it's no surprise then that you'll see Star Wars merch being worn in our office.
A favorite expression engage in, inside a design and style by Julie Baldwin, printed out on a installed fashion United states Clothing t-shirt, sizing up for any looser match. Inform them you actually care by providing them an amusing slogan t tee shirt that they'll use for a long time. If you a shirt that stays the same size after you wash it, maybe get one size bigger and make sure you hang dry it. This is the next t-shirt I've bought for my daughters birthday celebration current, one last season & one this season. If you are a Legend Competitions super fan, you can't depend on just any older garments and accessories to obtain via your day time. For the city I adore as well as the folks it...Many thanks for every thing #Landscapes,” Drake wrote inside a tweet accompanying the record picture.
A monitor published design and style may look clean & distinct or faded And grungy dependant upon the operations used. It has been study by at the very least 500,000 men and women in the united kingdom therefore we have obtained no problems,” the distribution said. The tee shirt normally can feel fine, a 100 % cotton merge and suits well within my spouse who normally wears an XL for T shirts. Burke has two children in their 20s, who are probably very impressed with her new friend, but has since divorced from their father. Individuals, as they usually do in Miami, are beginning to sweating and, at the core of the fishing line, it odours just like a warm smoothie of fatty locks. If you were secretly hoping Tarantino was going to pick up the Star Wars directorial mantle for the new trilogy, this simple high-contrast mash-up should go down a treat. Summertime SIXTEEN TOUR REVENGE LS SHIRT These t shirts are aCUSTOM Manufactured for Supporters BY Enthusiast Edition.
Spreadshirt's variety of amusing tees covers each of the typical classes: funny sayings, politely rude, pop culture icons, silly graphics and clever plays on words, but there are lots of other things in there that you'd never expect. Spreadshirt features a enormous variety of amusing t-t shirts for you and you good friends to pick from. Now I don't know what Anne did to incur the wrath of these guys, but this is a colorful shirt. I purchased this shirt and phone case to wear on the Drake show in LA (Huge Fan) and absolutely adored it. Both shirt and case are exceedingly well-made and ideal top quality. To get a comfortable cool look, decide on a tshirt by using a short, round hem and roll your sleeves to above the arm or perhaps below the elbow. Well, I'll just use it as a getting to sleep tee shirt for room purposes'”something Drake would possibly accept of. The timeless Rouleur logo design high quality t-t-shirt in black offering an explained quote with the wonderful Eddy Merckx.
The rapper wore a T-tee shirt with all the terms Girl Crush Everyday” published listed below a photo of NBA on ESPN” reporter Doris Burke's face. Exactly like other goods from Out from Print out, buying of this shirt sends a single publication into a group in need. You can pair an awesome vintage Star Wars shirt with any of your favorite styles, but black is going to be hard to beat. If you have a specific style in mind from our online catalog , please list it below. It only got neighborhood T-tshirt go shopping RAYGUN several times to release a tshirt in assistance of Drake University's work to #BringDrakeToDrake.
If the weather might takes a turn towards the cooler side but you'll still be able to show off your Star Wars swagger with just a touch of class, it will keep you comfortable. Have this vintage Celebrity Competitions X-Wing t-shirt on more than your lengthy sleeved t-shirt or energy, and you'll look prepared for the working day of classes at the Rebel Pilot's Academy! The motion picture is set three decades after the profit in the Jedi, Darth vader's redemption, and the destruction from the Death Superstar. You will discover wonderful literary t-tops in online store specializing in fashion and clothes. I bet it would win most fights, even though i really wouldn't want to know what sort of Sith Pokemon is going to spring out of that Death Star ball. He's not budging yet, even though we're told Drake's team got a ton of requests to get in on the Burke gear. I really want to leave this line, but I know Drake would want me to push through.
Yet another woman in range, who acquired seat tickets to tonight's Drake live concert at Madison Rectangular Back garden and Saturday's following-celebration at Place Ibiza, was looking to minimize an agreement using a 17-calendar year-aged hype man to purchase the tee shirt off his rear. The tops had been excellent, the shades had been vibrant and that we know what to do for the reunion t shirts the new year! At least a dozen other people ceased him and inquired him where he acquired the t-shirt and stated that was absolutely them! Pick out your favorite casual button up and match it up with a Star Wars shirt to be a cool cat, or day we say it - a galactic hipster! My sisters boyfriend and her are film producers in hollywood, california...and this was really a adorable humorous shirt for xmas which had been liked. Read through these designs and add to your amusing tshirt collection- unless, needless to say, you happen to be that person. Interpretations with this quotation are simply those of the reader and they are not necessarily the purpose of saint obnoxious? or his father or mother company's Chief executive officer.
When you can't usually reside in a galaxy much, far away (you know with university and job and all of that items) you CAN always appear like a citizen of the Legend Wars universe. The Star Wars saga continues with Disney if you still indulge in old Star Wars memories and you imitate lightsaber sounds in front of the mirror in the morning - rejoice. drake t shirt You can't get more classic than this iconic print from one of several early on Superstar Wars: A Whole New Expect cards. I hate to break the news to you, but you're the only person alive who doesn't, if you don't own a funny t-shirt.
