I can’t believe Porun is the most relatable character in this episode.

This is hands down the worst episode of anything ever. The entire show is nothing but downhill after this and every moment of our existence has been replaced with suffering. Life as you knew it ceased to exist. Begin regretting the choices that took you down this path.

It doesn’t matter that the episode is funny, or that it has some genuinely great moments, that the animation is on point, or that we got these beautiful faces:

It doesn’t matter that it’s a clever tribute to horror movie tropes. It doesn’t matter that the soundtrack is ominous or that we get some really cool camera work like low shots and fisheye lenses. Why? I’ll get to that. Let’s put you in context first.

It just occurred to me that this is a surprisingly topical episode for the month of October, despite originally airing in September. Strange things are afoot at Verone Junior High, of the spooky persuasion. Rina and Shiho swear they’ve seen a ghost, the specter known as “Verone’s Ruriko-san”. Rina was joined by an unseen presence in the classroom.

A girl who was prepping chem lab equipment gets spooked by rattling drawers and attacked by a mannequin. (the same one that turned into a zakenna in FW9?)

A strange face appears on the chalkboard.

And even Porun is feeling scared. Later, Nagisa gets spooked by Mepple, and then a mysterious shadow person grabs her shoulder and she freaks out.

This turns out to just be Honoka and she is positively indignant that Nagisa mistook her for a ghost.

After all of this, something scarier than a ghost shows up....... Circulas! If you thought he was dead, you’re not alone because there hasn’t been hide nor hair of him since MH21.

Everybody naturally assumes he’s behind the strange goings-on at the school but he denies any knowledge. He instead charges at the girls with his full power and turns a cicada into a Zakenna. This is a good fight, I’ve noticed episode director Komura Toshiaki has been consistently attached to some episodes with good dynamic action scenes. Unfortunately this is his last. Anyway, at a moment when everything seems to be going poorly for the girls, and Circulas is about to destroy Hikari, a pink fairy named Lulun jumps into the middle of the action and begs Circulas not to bully Porun.

He is less than happy to see her and so am I.

Let’s pause for a minute. Remember how bad Porun was when he was first introduced halfway through FWPC? He was an insufferable, immature brat who didn’t listen to the girls and whined until he got his way. Well, Porun got better as I’ve commented on, but Lulun is the same as Porun used to be, but worse. She will ultimately improve, but she’s either my most hated or second most hated mascot in the franchise, depending on how I feel about Candy on a given day.

Anyway Lulun shows up and after the shock wears off, the fight resumes. Circulas tries to destroy Lulun but Hikari blocks him with a wall of light in a rare and much needed demonstration of power after a few episodes of doing little to nothing. Black and White summon the Sparkle Braces and perform Marble Screw Max on Circulas and the Zakenna, which he tries to overpower with his totally-not-a-spirit-bomb dark energy ball.

You know how this song and dance goes though. The braces power the attack up and it sparks, Circulas flees while remarking that this must be the light Uraganos told him about, and the Zakenna is destroyed.

After the smoke clears, Lulun formally introduces herself as teh Princess of Light who weaves the future, and admits that she came to the Garden of Rainbows to stalk Porun. He remains very unenthusiastic about this and let me tell you that’s the most I’ve related to Porun in a long long time. Honoka also deduces that Lulun was responsible for all the sightings of “Ruriko-san” at the school. Later, when everybody is chilling at Akane’s stand, she admits that Ruriko-san was just something she and her classmates made up in their third year to scare the lowerclassmen and is surprised the story is still floating around. Meanwhile Porun begs for a quick and merciful death as Lulun latches onto him like a puppy. Thus concludes the objective, unbiased, scientifically proven worst episode of Max Heart, all because of one little puffball. My existence from here on out is pure torture and I bid you an unfond farewell.

Also there’s some scene at the start of a mummified body, probably Baldez, stewing in the Dusk Zone. I assume he’s recovering from his near-destruction.

(okay so no it’s actually a decent episode, I just really dislike Lulun and the following episodes will demonstrate why)

Why I should check my work

I just got done watching MH21 and the recap for 20 alone reminded me of a few plot points I forgot to bring up, like the introduction of Wishun and Nagisa's commentary that tied into the whole theme of the episode, which I completely forgot about: eventually everybody has to go their own way. The partnership between Nagisa, Honoka, Hikari, and their mascots is fleeting and temporary. Eventually they'll restore Hikari to the Queen and Mipple, Mepple, and Porun will return to the garden of light. Valuing your relationships in the moment is important but you can't hold people back from what they need to do. (This theme comes up a lot and mixes with "they're leaving the team" plots like in MH19.) In the name of being overly critical I completely lost the point of that episode in my review, and I apologize. If you noticed the watch date you'll realize there was a 5 day gap between watching and posting about it which attributes to my forgetfulness. In this regard, screenshots helped me as a form of visual note taking so not doing that inhibits my creative juices in a different way. There's no winning. Maybe I should set up automatic screenshots but that could result in too many or not getting the full text of important scenes. Anyway. I'll try to go back and revise my MH20 review, or just completely repost it, and pump out the 21 review tonight or tomorrow.
