michelle gomez somehow always manages to play opposite herself in some capacity…on doctor who she came face to face with herself played by another actor, on caos she played two different characters with the same physical form crossing paths, and on doom patrol the present day version of her character had a whole conversation with her past self. two times is merely a coincidence but three times is a pattern

when lilith said “it’s all i’ve ever known” and laura said “does anyone really know who they are or why they’re here” and miranda said “i’m not sure i fully understand my feelings about that” and missy said “i don’t even know why i’m crying” and mary said “what happened to me?”

the other day i read a comment somewhere that said laura de mille is just what the doctor would look like if michelle gomez played them and i haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since

i love how most of michelle’s characters, no matter how morally dubious they are, tend to be very polite and proper, and then there’s laura who will make herself a guest in your home without your knowledge or approval, raid your dead chief’s wardrobe, hurl insults at you, and just generally act like she runs the place all the while expecting you to do favors for her, as self-appointed team leader. yet despite this you could argue that she is actually the nicest

victor throwing miranda’s mental health issues in her face / lucifer throwing lilith’s lack of worthiness in her face vs. miranda punching victor square in the nose before shooting him and running over his body with his own cadillac / lilith stabbing lucifer in both of the wounds on his back, drinking his blood to regain her powers, and banishing him from both hell and her sight

i love miranda because she canonically has anger management issues but she’s also the most chill of michelle’s recent characters. much in the same way that laura’s the rudest but also the nicest, missy’s the most polite but also the most unhinged, and lilith is the most unapproachable but also the most approachable

miranda is “had a decent upbringing and loving parents up until Something Happened in her teen years and it was all down hill from there” vibes and laura is “never felt loved or accepted by her parents, probably endured some form of emotional neglect” vibes

laura always stands out to me as being really different from michelle’s other recent roles and i think one of the reasons for this is that she’s just such a hot mess like…missy, lilith, and miranda were all whip-smart and extremely competent. even mary managed to end up in a position of power and survive an eldritch terror on her own, despite being deeply traumatized and at a disadvantage due to being a mortal constantly dragged into witch drama. but laura had shit blowing up in her face time and time again, like literally nothing ever went her way and it’s just so fucking funny. very nice to see michelle playing a total fuck up for a change. feels right feels organic

i love that missy and lilith are both romantics but they’ve also canonically eaten people

missy going “and if i’m in the shower, just bring me some beans on toast. that’s roughly human flirting, isn’t it?” has the same energy as lilith telling that barfly she brought home to sacrifice “you’ll have to forgive the mess; i don’t usually do this sort of thing. it’s not like me at all” as if she were a character on some cheesy soap

losing my mind at the contrast between laura betraying her friends once, decades ago, when she was backed into a corner and one of those friends going on to tell her that she’s the most evil, irredeemable person in existence and proceeding to hunt her through time so that she can murder her with her bare hands and one of the doctor’s friends being like “she’s a murderer” about missy, who has killed a countless number of innocent people and repeatedly tried to destroy the planet, only for the doctor to be like “um well you’re eating a bacon sandwich rn so how can you possibly judge” like?? fksksms

i feel so bad for laura because she’s the one michelle character surrounded by people with full sticks up their asses like ok so she betrayed all her friends 72 years ago, so what?? when sabrina learned that lilith had been manipulating her towards the path of night for like a year she immediately ended up teaming up with her against lucifer and then allowed her to crown herself queen of hell. when missy created a whole army of cybermen made out of every dead man, woman, and child on planet earth so she could give it to the doctor as a birthday present he ran over to her and kissed her on the lips for inadvertently solving his identity crisis five seconds later. when cassie realized miranda wasn’t actually after her she teamed up with her on the spot and tried to get her immunity for her crimes despite knowing full well that she was an assassin. but laura made one mistake in 1949 and she’s been persecuted for it by her ex bff ever since??? lame

all of michelle’s characters have such complex, ambiguous morals that it’s hard to accurately categorize them, but, without overthinking it, the vibes i get are: mary (lawful good), lilith (true neutral), laura (chaotic neutral), miranda (true neutral), and missy (neutral/chaotic evil pre-vault arc, to true neutral)

another weird observation i’ve made: missy only ever wore dresses, lilith only ever wore dresses save that (1) scene in the entire show where she was allowed to wear pants, mary only ever wore skirts, miranda only ever wore pants….laura is the first one whose been granted the versatility you would normally find in an actual person’s wardrobe. she’s worn dresses, a skirt, pants…she’s worn her hair both up and down, with varying types of curls, as well as been given different styles of shoes to wear and more than one makeup palette…v interesting

has anyone else ever noticed how all of michelle’s recent characters have either had their nails painted red, black or not at all? because i find it funny how weirdly specific that is.
lilith and laura? always red. mary and miranda? bare. missy? red, black, and bare at one point.
