EDIT: This post was made before I had access to any playthroughs displaying the actual true ending, and when every video I saw kept calling one of the good endings the true ending. It’s a really fuckin good ending, it fixes most of the issues I had with the ending (when I thought it was the true ending) seen below.

Ok I watched MFN, already reblogged an earlier post with my thoughts but I thought I’d make it it’s own post so it reaches more people who may know what I’m missing, here’s some screenshots of the earlier post:

Also now that I think about it, I think my main problem with the ending is the fact that it doesn’t follow through with what it foreshadowed. It set up this narrative of Selfishness Vs Selflessness and just…didn’t follow through.

From all the newspapers calling selflessness and self sacrifice ridiculous (this game could get really on the nose sometimes), to Gordon literally starting the game saying “that’s the last time I stick my neck out for someone”, the game set up for the conclusion to be Gordon, in some way, proving to the world/the audience that selflessness can still be achieved, likely from an act of self sacrifice for the sake of the puppets that he’s been interacting with throughout the game.

Hell, I also thought that it could’ve been about Gordon’s PTSD in general - the selfishness of the city representing the survival-centric mindset that a lot of PTSD-sufferers can fall into, and Gordon learning to let his guard down, and that there’s more to life than just survival, reconnecting with the things he loved before the war (like in the scene with Goblette) represented by him coming back to an abandoned kids’ show studio.

But again, no.

Gordon helps the puppets get back on the air. Then he leaves. He just goes back to his shitty apartment. And the Neighbourhood continues to haunt him. That’s it.

It doesn’t feel satisfying. It feels like there’s something missing.

And everything would be explained away if I interpret it all as a Christ allegory - Gordon’s theme of forgetting is him forgetting the love of God, that’s what the whole “light above the earth” means, as previously mentioned. But by god that’s…look I went through several years of Catholic school I really don’t want this whole game to be a Christian Parable.

I dunno. I love the game. But that ending was just…deeply unsatisfying and off.
