This has to be the most specific thing I've ever made. This is a model of a Septogg, a creature found in Metroid 2: Return of Samus as well as the unofficial remake AM2R. It is also a functional cup, though it's rather inconvenient trying to store anything in there. AM2R really made me love these things despite the small role they play, and I wanted to make something showing this fondness. They're just funny little critters.

those six hours had me prepared to book a flight to germany so i could throw a computer at you in person
Context: This poor fucker had to help me hack my 2ds via discord. This process usually takes an hour at best. Mine took 6 hours. Here’s a little best of:

I'm being hypocritical here but its very frustrating how any discussion of AM2R or Samus Returns always boils down to "AM2R is better" even when I want to talk about the games in isolation. Number one, they're different games that make different decisions about gameplay and how to reinterpret Metroid II. Number two, despite the differences, a lot of the decisions they make are basically the same, and a lot of the time I catch people clowning on Samus Returns for something AM2R does very similarly (for example, the approach to adapting the soundtrack). Number three, Samus Returns has lots of flaws, but AM2R is itself no golden child (looking at the boss fights, though that's not the only thing).
I'm a big fan of AM2R, and between the two remakes I think it probably is the better one. But the difference in quality is not nearly as stark as people make it out to be, and Samus Returns has the unfortunate distinction of being compared to the original Metroid II, AM2R, AND Dread when there is a lot going for it on its own merits.
In the end, Samus Returns, AM2R, and the original Metroid II are companion pieces. They all give valuable insight into an important part of Metroid's history and how the gaming landscape changed from the 90s to the 2010s.

sometimes outta nowhere i get really into playing a bunch of games in a series and while i was in the middle of doing all the zeldas i decided to procrastinate on starting phantom hourglass by playing super metroid (the only metroid id ever played before this was dread)
this then blossomed into me doing fusion, then zero mission, then dread again, and even am2r because my body decided that i must (2d) metroid until i simply couldnt. all of this is to say that as a series, its shocking that metroid manages to be so consistently fun. thats not an experience i usually get from playing a bunch of games in a series, usually a real stinker crops up once in a while...

They don't make remakes like they used to. In the GBA, DS and 3DS Era, most remakes usually had new content added, like the Sevii Islands in FRLG, the areas added in the Metroid remakes and the old Zelda remakes would usually have a new dungeon in them. Now, we basically only get remasters. BDSP is basically just DP without customisable secret bases. It's hard for me to be excited for games like LM2HD when there's just nothing new.

Y’know I’ve always wondered something, and this is gonna sound like a salty rant I know.
People often give shit to Samus Returns for being an unfaithful remake. And hey they kind of have a point, it’s really different, it misses many of the original’s details, kinda fucks the ending etc
But....so does Zero Mission, and yet that game’s hailed as the best remake ever made?
The original Metroid was all about free exploration and getting lost, much more so than in the sequels. You could go wherever you wanted to, beat both bosses in any order, the game was tough as shit which in some ways enphasized the idea of being on a hostile planet, and the artstyle, while chibi in a way, used very dark and “acid” colors
Zero Mission is the complete opposite: you are VERY much encouraged to do things in a spdecific order, unless you do some sequence breaking you’re not gonna reach the same level of freedom as the original, and who’s gonna know how to properly sequence break on their first playthrough? The game is the easiest in the series, you never get even remotely lost, and has a much more colorful artstyle, even when using a filter to mimick the GBA’s unlit screen.
Metroid was a slower paced game in some aspects, while Zero Mission is VERY fast, VERY bombastic and energetic to the point of barely having any of the original’s atmosphere
Just listen to the music
Most of the original’s tracks were slower and more foreboding

But in Zero Mission they are much faster paced and full of energy, not nearly as atmospheric and much more suited to an upbeat, action focused adventure

(I can’t post anymore because Tumblr won’t let me)
Just take a listen for yourself at the title theme: the original starts with your classic Metroid creepy theme and then transitions to a more cheerful, hopeful melody, while ZM starts with said upbeat melody and only at the end does it transition to the main theme
I’m not trying to shit on Zero Mission, hell it’s one of my favorites in the franchise! But it’s only a faithful remake in the way it recaptures the original’s map layout and expands on it. The game’s atmosphere, aesthetic and overall feel are completely different if not downright opposite to the original’s....just like Samus Returns with Metroid 2! And granted SR has its own issues separate from being a M2 remake but why does nobody else criticize ZM for having many of the same remake-related issues that the latter has? Is it really just because the whole AM2R debacle left everyone jaded? Because if so I find it funny, because while AM2R is comparably the more faithful remake by a mile, it too has its issues, as instead of trying to emulate M2′s general atmosphere it instead replaces it entirely with a more Primeesque one, you can tell just by listening to the OST, (which I love btw), since it’s far more upbeat and energetic than the original’s while still being atmospheric....but it’s a very different kind of atmosphere than the original
