In Disco Elysium, the Samaran People’s Republic, the last remaining communist state and a China/Vietnam analogue amalgam, is alluded to being a major drug producer if you accept Joyce’s quest to investigate the Union’s drug business, but in Sacred and Terrible Air/Püha ja õudne lõhn it’s confirmed that the SRV is the origin of incredibly potent meth, which is awesome conceptually because communist speed would hit different. but that also means that Robert Kurvitz predicted the underground Chinese fentanyl lab conspiracy way back in 2012

(this whole post is /gen and /nm, apologies if my tone comes across wrong! im genuinely not trying to be condescending or an asshole, but instead respond in earnest to explain why absolutist abstinence is not the way to curb drug use, and that harm reduction is the thing that people need to fight for. CW I do mention and somewhat discuss some drug use, specifically opioids, benzodiazapines, meth, psychedelics, and alcohol addiction.)
coming from a (somewhat) recovering polyaddict: i get what ur going for with this post and i feel 4 u and whichever reasons you have behind it, but i think the message is old dare rhetoric with some very black and white thinking that can be counter-productive for the goal you are trying to achieve.
every point you have made sits in this grey middle ground of "technically true if you think too hard about it":
All drugs can kill, even the weed people are shitposting about in the notes. but, honestly, barely any of them are in a overdosing-on-fentanyl insta-death thing. the vast majority of things are deadly basically only when combined with other drugs, or when you have medical conditions that will be exacerbated by whatever substance you're using. weed is the big meme in this regards, AFAIK there has only been 1 death definitively attributed to its use IIRC, which came down to a plethora of external factors like health conditions, and that's with more asterisks than i can fathom.
"all drugs contain unclean substances" again, yeah? but that's down to the fact that the real world is not black and white. your prescribed medications' API (active pharmaceutical ingredient, ie the actual medication) is not going to be 100% pure. the legal requirement probably varies dramatically based on a bunch of shit, but you're generally looking at around 98% purity of the bulk API. It is actually easier for narcotic manufacturers to attain a higher purity if they try to, simply because synthesizing chemicals on an industrial scale is fucking DIFFICULT, and lab/pilot scale is significantly easier.
obviously, adulterated drugs exist and are the issue. Fentanyl (and analogues) and nitazenes contaminating opioids or benzos are massive problems killing horrifying numbers of people in the us & canada especially. meth contamination is a big issue with MDMA, NBOMEs sold as acid, or even sprayed weed (not necessarily with spice, but its been a thing in the past to spray sugar water on your nug to make it weigh more and feel stickier).
"all drugs are addictive". well, yes. anything can be addictive. exercise is addictive, and can lead to very dangerous health problems. that's not to downplay the addictiveness of drugs, they are for sure much more addictive, it's just that on its own its a moot point. Everyone knows that drugs are addictive, but there are a plethora of reasons why someone might disregard that knowledge.
-------
every one of these points is better managed through harm reduction. all drugs can kill? there should be a well signposted way for someone using a substance to know the ways in which they can and will kill^1. if someone knows that mixing xanax and dilaudid is incredibly dangerous, it will help them be safer if they do choose to use that combination. Additionally, free narcan is a thing that exists in pretty much all of the US and canada from my understanding. IIRC in the US it's legal for anyone to carry narcan even if they wont need it themselves, which you should do if possible (i know that this isnt legal in the UK. if you live in the UK, there are ways you can try to change this!). narcan can reverse an opioid overdose, at least until paramedics arrive, who can then administer the correct narcan dose for the duration needed to ensure the dose has been cleared from the patient's system.
adulterated or fake drugs can *VERY* easily be tested at home, for VERY cheap. a lot of governments or charities will even provide these test kits for free to vulnerable people. there are reagent test kits, where you put a drop of multiple tests on your substance, and the color will change depending on what is in it^2. there are fentanyl or nitazene test strips (from the above linked list) that can detect specifically fentanyl or nitazene (or whatever) contamination^3. if you test your shit, you can make a correctly informed decision. there are even many companies that will let you send a sample of your drugs to them to be tested in a lab using NMR! these will also generally have stalls at festivals that will test your drugs, no questions asked.
in terms of addiction: harm reduction is an especially important subject here. The MOST important thing to help people is to provide community and safe places to discuss this topic in. if a person can very easily go "hey, is it a red flag if i think about drinking all day, every day, until i get off work? even if i only drink once a week?", it can provide an invaluable "yes. check in on yourself, that sounds like you might be getting addicted to alcohol" to a person before they get a lot deeper in addiction.
-------
these are some very surface level ideas within the harm reduction umbrella, but they are vastly more effective at saving lives than a message of abstinence. people do drugs, no matter how hard you try to stop them. but we can make sure that they don't die when they do use said drugs.
it's the black and white thinking of total-abstinence only based education that is its downfall. if every drug will kill you, why stop at alcohol? why not smoke some heroin and eat a few xanax bars? if the second you put your toe over the line of drug use you have already hit "rock bottom", what is there to lose? you have been told you cant get any lower. this mindset brings on a very doomer-esque pattern of thinking that makes it MUCH harder to pull yourself out of the hole.
-------
I do want to touch on that last parenthesis a bit, and ask you (and other people who read this) a question:
why, in particular, does alcohol get a pass to you?
the answer is probably going to be that it's socially acceptable, and seen as something you do for celebration. (aside from religious/cultural reasons) that's all that makes drinking alcohol something less demonized than, say, chowing down on some mushrooms and staring in bewilderment at fish at the aquarium. Alcohol is for sure worse for your body and also more immediately physically dangerous than something like mushrooms^5, so why should it specifically get a pass?
-------
the better message is "dont be wreckless about doing drugs". If you make an educated decision to try some acid, it's whatever. that's your choice, just make sure its an educated choice; in the exact same way that having a pint of bud light at applebees after a long day at work and ubering home is an educated choice.
honestly, yes. don't do drugs. They can be dangerous even with good harm reduction practice. but this concept is so bogged-down by social/cultural nuances of "what is a drug" that it is INCREDIBLY difficult to actually portray what you mean when you say "dont do drugs" that it's never really going to be an effective message on its own.
-----
notes:
^1: i linked psychonaut wiki as it's very comprehensive, but it has had some controversy. a trans-ran alternative is substance search, however it is less complete than psychonaut wiki. tripsit is another alternative.
^2: reagent testing does have pitfalls, such as if there are multiple substances it can become hard to identify them, hence the latter point of specific adulterant tests. reagent tests are best when ensuring that the drug you bought is actually the one you want, and not entirely fake.
^3: as mentioned above, these will test specifically for the presence of an adulterant. if you are using these: read the friendly manual.
^4: i deleted the paragraph with 4 in it sorry
^5: sorry for wookposting on main. it will not happen again.
^bonus: policing et al are major issues that are explicitly contributing to needless human suffering. im not getting into this in this post, but i felt that mentioning it somewhere was important.
please dont do drugs. im gonna try n say this in a different way than the drug ed ppl do at schools cause i know that shit doesnt work well.
Im gonna preface this by saying that I dont do drugs. I never have, I never plan to, no matter how dire my situation is. So if you say "but you dont understand how hard it is to quit [insert drug here]!", youre right. I dont. But I DO understand how hard it is to quit harmful addictive things.
This is not about your social image. I'm not telling you to not do drugs because it 'looks gross' or 'smells bad' (even if it does, but thats not the point).
My main point is the physical AND emotional impact it has on you and those around you.
PHYSICAL
ALL drugs can and will kill. There is no such thing as a safe drug, or a safe amount of a drug. Some drugs are less dangerous than others, but they still impact your body just as badly (even if over a long period of time).
ALL drugs contain unclean substances. There is no such thing as a 'pure' or 'clean' drug. You have to always assume that whatever drug is being offered to you, or whatever drug you are consuming, has deadly chemicals in it. Because it does.
ALL drugs are addictive. This includes things like alcohol, caffeine, etc. Using a drug once makes it easier to become addicted the next time you use it, and the addiction chance + severity will rise with every use.
Don't smoke, don't vape, don't use any form of marijuana, don't drink (unless it's alcohol on very special occasion every once in a while), don't inject, don't patch, don't snort/snuff, don't pop pills.
I mean it.

Names
1 Samuel 17:38-18:30, Psalm 68:1-6, John 16:5-17:5
I realized just now that I've crossed a threshold with regards to what I write here. I'm now less worried about people reading this and thinking I'm a heretic and more worried that people will read this and think I'm terrible at writing. My embarassment at choosing tumblr for a medium has remained constant as have my reasons for choosing the platform.
I've taken to listening to the bible in a year project being read aloud when I garden. It's pretty good, but does tend to lean pretty hard in the direction of the personal faith to the detriment of the focus on being a community. Today it was all about the power of the name of Jesus. The psalm is about it, David threatens Goliath with it, and Jesus says that asking for anything in his name will result in it being given.
Names are super important to people and for the last few years I have stopped using the excuse that I'm bad at remembering names and actively tried to get better at it. People love to be remembered by name and I want people to feel like they are worth remembering. I assume there is some similar analogue with how we think about and relate to God, but I haven't given much thought to that yet.
What I have thought a lot about is Christian Paganism, which I only just heard called that but I loved the name and what it implies. In this instance, we treat the name of God like an incantation which we can tag at the end of our prayers because ostensibly we believe that there is power in the name of Jesus but when asked, we would give all sorts of excuses as to why it might not work. One memory that has specifically stuck in my mind is of a young man brought by his father to our shelter. He stayed up for hours, mumbling and saying, I assume to the demons he was facing, 'I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.' And he remained under attack. I assume he was on meth, which is a demonic force if there ever was one. But if we have decided that the name of Jesus is not an incantation, what is it then? I'm not sure, but I think it has to do with the relational aspect of our faith in Jesus. It's a hand wavy answer but I'll just have to live with that for now.

I think it’s funny when cyberpunk or near future settings have fictional drugs especially ones that are direct analogues for a real drug as if “meth” is like a copyrighted thing that needs to be renamed like a fictional version of McDonalds

'Metal Machine Music' continued
My apologies for the brevity of the previous entry. My laptop ceased rendering the letter 'e', for some reason. (Or maybe it was somehow ‘spooked’ by the music?)
'My Ears! My Ears', as the Blast First label had it, to describe relative lightweights like Big Black and Sonic Youth in the late 80s. Back in 1975, Lou Reed produced a real 'art statement' for the ears, with clear links to the the 60s New York avant garde of the Velvet Underground and LaMonte Young. Zeitkratze's reinterpretation is more an 'art restatement' to Reed's 'art statement', 'post punk' to Reed's 'punk'. Glenn Branca and Rhys Chatham to Reed/Cale. It's incredible to me, to see how much Metal Machine Music (MMM) prefigured the likes of Merzbow and Keiji Heino, and 'Japanese Noise' generally. And how the analogue abrasiveness of MMM is so much more brutal than subsequent Far Eastern digital technology. Reed is closer to a Link Wray-on-Crystal Meth methodology than the white lab coat seriousness of his Japanese descendants.
I have always thought that Reed was an incredible guitarist. Just listen to his fractured screed on 'Run, Run, Run', 'European Son', I Heard Her Call My Name' and 'Sister Ray'. (All additional credit here, however, to Sterling Morrison!) No-one else was doing doing anything remotely like this in 1966-8. So MMM should have come as no surprise to anyone. The surprise was Reed's sheer punky brattishness in his desire to piss off both his label and his fans. He also donated The Jesus and Mary Chain a whole career (Never Understand, being a principle exhibit).
The Zeitkratze project, admirable as it is, sounds mannered, despite the enviable skills that the ensemble utilised to transcribe the piece (just as some have transcribed Derek Bailey pieces). The use of other, more potentially polite, string instruments surely defeats Reed's original purpose, to deconstruct the electric guitar's then-current sheer milquetoast mediocrity in rock music? I don't know if it's intentional. however, but the Germans do manage to isolate and exploit the 'Cale element' of the VU, such as All Tomorrows Parties, Venus in Furs, Heroin and The Black Angel's Death Song with their trained/tainted, more 'classically informed' strings. (The fact that John Cale was academically trained, as opposed to Reed's background in Pop and Tin Pan Alley, should always be remembered.)
In the end, Zeitkratze's impressive revisiting will always ultimately fall short of Lou Reed's transgressive masterpiece, if only for the latter's genuinely shocking effects and after-effects. Reed invented 'noise', at least as it is understood in rock music. And it remains 'unlistenable', just to add to its avant gloss. I can give it maybe 15 minutes before I thought "my ears! my ears!". Maybe only truly gonzo listeners like Lester Bangs can go the whole course, but it will inevitably remain an 'endurance course' for the macho listener?

Survey #317
i’m tired as a motherfucker and don’t feel like thinking up some lyrics, so here, jus have the survey.
Have you volunteered in the past 6 months? No. French fries or onion rings? French fries. I don't like onion rings. Do you suffer from anxiety? Very badly. Favorite healthy snack? "Apples and peanut butter are one of them." <<<< Same, actually. Good shit. Favorite Disney movie? Forever and always The Lion King. If you see a bee in your house.. are you going to kill it? I hate to say it, but I'm killing it. Do you normally take a shower in the morning or at night? Morning. Do you have a cat? Yeah. What is your favorite animal? It will always be meerkats. Always. Do you know what time you were born? 10:30 AM, I believe. Do you like McDonalds? I'm gonna be real: I've never understood the McDonald's hate. I enjoy it perfectly fine. I mean it's certainly not gourmet, but I'll choose it over other fast food places sometimes. It's cheap and decent food, imo. What's your favorite flower? Orchids. Have you thought about joining the military? FUCK no. Who is the person that has impacted your life the most? Given my PTSD, I think it's pretty obviously Jason. Have you ever had a pet fish? Yeah, but not a lot. I never enjoyed them much. Have you ever wanted to be on a game show? Not seriously, no. I wouldn't want to be on television. Have you ever vaped? Nah. Who was the last person to give you a hug? Either my niece or nephew. Have you ever been on TV? I don't think so, no. What's your favorite store in the mall? Hot Topic, ugggghhhhh take me there. Has anyone ever told you that you have an accent? Yeah, especially when I was younger when I definitely did have a clear Southern accent. Do you have any piercings? Yeah, six. I have been DYING for a new one lately... How did your parents meet? Work. What was your first word? "Dada." Do you eat more healthy food or junk food? Somewhere in the middle, I'd say. What do you spend too much money on? When it's my own money, tattoos. I think I'll be perfectly capable of doing it, but when I'm employed, I'm going to have to watch how much I invest into those. What is a disturbing episode of an otherwise non-disturbing show? What is a disturbing show (or one you would describe as one) is enjoyable to you? Meeeh I don't watch enough for this. What is the most memorable song in a movie? How about a show? Oh wow, I dunno. "Circle of Life" from TLK is a beauty, as is "Strangers Like Me" from Tarzan. There really are a lot. As for shows, "Carry On My Wayward Son" from Supernatural will immediately get fans screaming the lyrics, haha. However, I don't know if that song properly counts since it wasn't written just for the show, but whatever. What is something you’re grateful for that humans have made/have continued to make exist? What about something that you wish that humans didn’t destroy? The Internet, whew. I wish humans would stop destroying the fucking environment. It's heartbreaking how many woods are wiped away here for construction, only to never be built on... While evil men are commonly talked about, what woman would you consider the most evil? I don't know, but it would probably be a rapist or pedophile. Those are probably the people I abhor most. Do you believe children can be evil? If so, what child from history do you believe to have been the most evil? I don't really think children are born evil, no. I've never heard of a diabolical baby or anything. I think the environment they are raised in molds them as they age. I don't know about the last question. Name one way that music can be bad for humans. It can be depressing sometimes, actually dragging your mood down, especially if you already feel low. What has been one of the most blatant advertising in a movie, show, or music video? Some of these questions are hard man, idfk lol. What book have you read/listened to that “messed you up” (or made you have a lot of negative feelings afterward)? Johnny Got His Gun left me feeling so spiteful towards and disappointed in the world. It definitely made me feel down for a while. If you have a pet, what is the best thing that you have for them (either a toy, a highly rated food, etc)? If you don’t have one but would like one, have you thought about what you would get your pet? We definitely don't have the money for "high quality" stuff. What works, works. Did you ever know anyone who was (previously) a part of a cult? What cult? Were you ever a part of one? No. What is something that is legal right now that really shouldn’t be? I'm stealing the previous person's answer by saying fireworks. They have a horrible effect on animals and PTSD victims and is just litter and a fire hazard. What is a movie you consider successful/good that did not have high reviews? I'm not educated enough on movie rankings. When you met the person you now like, what happened? We hugged and cried a bit lmao. Did you realize anything today? No. What do you want to do today? It'd be nice to get off my ass and get Emerson's birthday pictures into Lightroom so Ashley can finally have them... Can you honestly say you’d risk your life for someone else? I know with certainty I would for some people. Could you forgive a boyfriend or friend who physically hurt you? Ha, nope, byyyyeee~ What’s the cutest thing someone’s ever done for you? Ugh... So one night when I was lying down to go to bed but also texting Jason, I was being playful and joked for him to sing me to sleep. He sent me a video for "The Mortician's Daughter" by Black Veil Brides (one of his favorite bands) and just pasted the lyrics, and I thought it was the cutest fucking thing ever. I went to bed listening to it and just smiling. It's why I just don't listen to it anymore. I shouldn't have even talked about it, soooo next question. What are the top five places you wish you could go before you die? Ummm South Africa, Yellowstone National Park, Germany, Alaska, and the Bahamas, maybe. How many tattoos would you like to have? I'm gonna be a fuckin mural. I want tats pretty much everywhere. What question do you hate to answer? "What do you like to do for fun?" What's your favourite animated or cartoon program? Fullmetal Alchemist. What do you think the greatest invention has been? Electricity. What's your favourite movie quote? I dunno, I don't really have one. Do you prefer digital or analogue clocks? Analogue clocks are way more elegant and can be beautifully decorated. Who is your favorite foreign singer/musician? Do you translate his or her lyrics? If you exclude English-speaking foreign bands, like from the UK, Rammstein for sure. I can translate some of them. Say something in a foreign language? "Liebe" means "love" in German. What is a weather-type that you like that not many others do? Snow, for sure. I've never understood the "ew, snow" type of people. It's so pretty. Granted, it's rare here, so it's more of a treat down here, but still. Who do you know personally that has a nice singing voice? Sara has a beautiful voice. What was the last word you learned? I have no clue, given how bad my memory is becoming... It's hard for me to learn anything nowadays, because it doesn't stick. What is your favorite culture? (that you find most interesting): I'll be honest, I'm not very well-informed on foreign cultures. Due to taking so many classes though, I do find German culture to be quite appealing. They are very serious about honesty (for example, telling someone you're okay when you're not is frowned upon in small talk, even), as well as manners. I would love to experience their lifestyle. Have you ever watched anime porn? I've never watched porn to begin with. If you got paid $3 million to smoke meth one time would you do it? Nope. I'm not risking addiction or death. Are ladybugs cute? Yesssss. Will you leave the house without fragrance on? Yeah, I usually do. Do you make good money doing what you do? I'm unemployed. I've only ever worked minimum wage jobs. What is your favorite fruit? Strawberries, yum. And kiwi. What do you think of horses? I love them! Are you doing something with your life that matters? Ugh, I don't feel like it. Do you like gravy on your mashed potatoes? I hate gravy. What is the dirtiest rap song you have ever heard? Nicole played "WAP" once when I was in the car and I wanted to die. What about a dirty song in any other genre? "Bitches" by Hollywood Undead MIGHT be rap, but idk? What even is their genre???? But anyway, as much as I love the song, it's dirty as shit. What is a genre of music you simply can't stand? Rap, generally. What is, in your opinion, the best way of dealing with a break up? Lots and lots of self-care and focusing on loving yourself and realizing your worth lies in yourself and not another person. What flavor of Doritos do you like best? Cool Ranch, of course. Would you ever go to a comedy club? Yeah, sure. Why is it that photography is becoming a trend? Because it's art, and people enjoy art???????? What is the funniest movie you have ever seen? White Chicks gets me way harder than it should lmao. Would you ever consider dating someone who lived across the country? I guess, so long it was the plan that we'd eventually move in together, and effort was being made to achieve that once we got pretty serious. Do you have a tattoo? If you do, describe the pain you went through when getting it done. Well, I have six, so I'll just talk about my first one, which was on my wrist. It really isn't bad, especially once you've adjusted to the pain. I think the best metaphor would be that it's like lightly pinching a cat scratch. Outlining is the worst part, imo. What is your favorite bookstore? I don't have one. Who was the last person to tell you that you were cute? I have no idea. When was the last time you had a fever? How high did it go? Oh, I couldn't tell you. Those are very rare for me. How many times do you think that you’ve truly been in love before? With who? Twice, with Jason and Sara. Do you prefer French kissing, or regular kissing more, and why? I mean, this depends on the mood as well as how serious we are. Have you ever been married before? How many times? No. Who do you know that gives the best hugs? Summer has always been a big, strong hugger like I am. Have you ever dated someone of the same gender before? Yeah. Who do you consider to be your hero? My mom. Who is your best friend? Tell us about them. Sara. She's a very caring, strong, creative, just overall amazing person who stands firmly for what she feels is right, and we can't forget about her incredible loyalty, nor her absolute adoration for animals, reptiles especially. How much did your car cost? I don't have my own car. What is the last picture you received on your phone of? Sara sent me a photo of Martha, her ball python. Do you have any friends that actually model? No. Do you keep condoms in your room? No, considering I have no reason to. Do you follow any special diet? (dairy free, vegetarian, gluten free etc.) No, but I desperately want to return to being vegetarian. Vegan would be even better, but I know I'm absolutely not capable of that. What is an appliance you don’t have, but would love to have? uhhhhh Which keys on your keyboard are worn out the most? My "a," "s," and "d" from gaming. If you could be any supervillain, which would you be? Ha, I could probably pull off Harley Quinn pretty easily. Though "super"villain sounds a bit strong for her. What’s the most historic thing that has happened in your lifetime? Either Covid or 9/11, probably. What’s the scariest non-horror movie? I personally think the idea behind Johnny Got His Gun is fucking terrifying. What’s the most amazing true story you’ve heard? More beautiful than "amazing," but whatever. I can't think of anything else. Jason's mother actually left his father to go back home to New York when he cheated on her, but he followed her all the way there, and they wound up reconciling and were very happily married since. They were a spectacular couple, and I miss them a lot. What brand are you most loyal to? I have no idea. It's hard to be loyal to any when you're not the one buying products. Where are you not welcome anymore? Well, speaking of him, probably Jason's house, haha... I feel that if I just showed up there, his parents would honestly be super happy to see me and want to catch up, but Jason, not so much. I doubt Colleen would welcome me into her house, either. What’s the most recent show you’ve binge-watched? Avatar: The Last Airbender w/ Sara. What’s a common experience for many people that you’ve never experienced? Just... adult stuff. Paying bills. Having a stable job. Passing their driver's test. What are some misconceptions about your hobby? We'll use forum roleplay here, in which case I know a very common misconception is that it's sexual in nature and is a kink. It's never been that for me. It's about building unique, complex characters in a vast universe of your creativity, meshing with other's. It's a beautiful thing to me. What’s the dumbest thing someone has argued with you about? Oh, I'm sure something with Mom... because she is absolutely never wrong. What’s the longest rabbit hole you’ve been down? Conspiracy theories on YouTube, aha... What odd smell do you really enjoy? I really enjoy the smell of lilacs, though I know people who think they smell too strong and/or just stink. If you had a HUD that showed three stats about any person you looked at, what three stats would you want it to show? Hm, interesting question. Maybe approachability, moral alignment, and mood. What is your favorite flavor of pop tart? I really like the chocolate sundae ones. Gum? I really like fruit-flavored gums, especially watermelon or strawberry. Last song you sang along to? I sang a bit to "Second Chance" by Shinedown. Are you fascinated by rivers? Yeah, sure. Streams, more specifically, because you can see the bottom and walk more safely in them. I love exploring those. Do you live near a volcano? No, and I plan on keeping it that way, haha. How big is the screen on your digital camera? I dunno, the normal size for a Canon? Do you find train whistles comforting? No. What bird is the cutest? Oh, that's so hard. I love the pastel-colored ones, and hummingbirds are like, universally cute. Are you scared to look at your own organs on x-ray or ultrasound? No, that's actually really cool. Do big eyes freak you out? On people? Generally, no. I tend to find them cute, actually, especially on girls, but I've definitely seen people with big eyes that instead look kinda creepy. Have you ever walked on a frozen lake/river? Hm, I'm actually not sure. I don't believe so, though. Have you ever held a real sword? No. Have you ever seen a tree over 100 years old? Uh, realistically, probably? That's not that old in the grand scheme of trees, is it? Do you feel uncomfortable at fancy restaurants? I can sometimes, yes. I feel very out-of-place.

U.P. Breaking News Bulletin – 12-4-17 6:30 p.m. ET
Domestic violence, shoplifting incident leads to arrest of federal fugitive and a Negaunee man convicted of being involved with crystal meth in Alger County
By Greg Peterson U.P. Breaking News Owner, News Director 906-273-2433
(Marquette, MI) – A federal fugitive and a man with a methamphetamine past were arrested on Sunday in Marquette County and charged with domestic violence and shoplifting.
27-year-old Tyler Michael Tull of Negaunee, MI remains jailed tonight after being booked into the MCJ about 6:30 p.m. on Sun., Dec. 3, 2017. Tull is charged with one count each of first degree retail fraud and domestic assault. Bond is not set. Tull is an active parolee/probationer with the state of Michigan in connection with a meth investigation in Alger County. Tull was sentenced to up to two years in prison – but it appears he actually got probation for possession of a controlled substance analogues. Tull was sentenced in Alger County in January 2016 and received a “discharged status” on January 10, 2017.
Tumblr media
Federal fugitive 48-year-old Kurt Ochoa of L’Anse, MI was booked into the MCJ about 2 p.m. on Sun., Dec. 3, 2017.
Ochoa is charged with second degree retail fraud ($1,000 bond) and third degree retail fraud ($1,000 bond).
Ochoa is also charged with one count of domestic assault with no bond.
Ochoa was facing criminal charges in the Western District of Missouri and his case was transferred in July 2016 to federal court in Marquette.
In fact, it appears he was wanted by federal officials (scroll down to read or download federal documents).
Ochoa admitted to possessing and using marijuana in July and August of 2016.
On Sept. 8, 2016, Judge Robert Holmes Bell in Marquette, MI sentenced Ochoa to 18 months in federal prison for violating the terms of his supervised release in connection with the case in Missouri.
Ochoa should have been in federal prison when he was busted.
In July 2011, Ochoa was arrested in Green County, Missouri and faced federal charges of receiving stolen firearms and unlawful transport of firearms by a felon. He was sentenced on June 2011 by U.S. District Court Judge Dean Whipple in Missouri to just over 5 years (63 months) in federal prison.
After his release, the case was transferred to the jurisdiction of federal court in Marquette to allow Ochoa to live in L’Anse. But that did not work out. Ochoa still faces a two-year federal prison term for violating probation.
Here is the federal paperwork involving Ochoa (scroll down to see what state of Michigan has on Tull):
Kurt Ochoa Case transfer from Missouri to UP (1)
Kurt Ochoa Case transfer from Missouri to UP (2)
Kurt Ochoa Sentencing in Missouri
Kurt Ochoa Indictment with others in Missouri
KURT OCHOA, violates probation
Its not clear if the cases are connected.
However the cases are similar to a radio call answered late last week about a domestic dispute and shoplifting at the lawn and garden section of Walmart in Marquette Township. A suspect vehicle fled and was pulled over by police officers on U.S.-41 near Best Buy.

While I agree with some of the broad strokes - there’s a demonstrable link between drug war terrorism and cold war era CIA activities, including in what all agencies like the CIA delight in which is dark money - there’s nothing about crack which really separates it as a drug from cocaine, they differ only in preparation and route of administration.
At the time of the so-called “crack epidemic”, which in some respects I think is a misnomer, cocaine was everywhere. It didn’t exactly need a lot of push from US agencies to spread into major cities because it is a highly profitable and enjoyable commodity and major cities tend to be where you find the kind of emisserated markets where conditions of concentrated dependency become especially visible
This isn’t to say that agencies like the CIA didn’t turn a blind eye and benefit off the trade, or that the general picture which Black drug users and communities writ large, often as presumed-users (guilt by association etc), wasn’t one of either negligence our utter militarized hostility (one could recall the LAPD battarams knocking down doors and walls in presumed houses of sale).
Also cocaine is the form of shipment. To my knowledge you don’t really ship things as crack on the scale of transnational smuggling so it’s kind of innacurate to say it was “funneled into” these places in that form. You prepare crack from powder cocaine, it is a simple processes that you can do in a home kitchen but it is easier to ship and go through processes of cutting as cocaine. You can pretty simply prepare powder cocaine as an inhalant for personal use without going through the entire rock-production process so it’s versatile in that way.
I bring this up not to be pedantic but part of the mythology of crack cocaine is that is uniquely dangerous and evil compared to powder - this is entirely a legal fabrication steeped in the perception that crack rock was associated with Black users and inner city communities going through the traumatic throes of neoliberal destruction and racialized poverty. This is why crack was given such a massive sentencing deferential compared to powder - many times the prison sentence for equal amounts of crack compared to powder. Sentencing defernetials which enjoyed support from the Congressional Black caucus because of their own desire to purge the scourge of drug markets from the community!  Which I bring up only to highlight the danger this kind of fabricated stigma has because it is an appealing narrative: Rather than understanding hyper visible concentrations of dependencies - addiction - as manifestations of a capitalist market in an imperialist society and large scale alienation/social destruction, we turn from this complexity to an easy narrative where we have an “evil” drug and this drug, its users ,sellers, and finally the mysterious boogeyman of the CIA as the sole responsible parties (again, not saying that they were not involved in the trade- they were- just saying we shouldn’t be simplistic).
This has nothing to do with the actual drug effects and everything to do with how the drug was retroactively coded once it appeared or was made hypervisible in impoverished Black communities.
This is similar to the way that other drugs like methamphetamine became associated with “White Trash” poverty in decaying rural communities - think the entire “faces of meth” campaign. It has nothing to do with the actual drug’s chemical behavior or even it’s risks of depedence-formation, which are not greatly different from any other drug. Rather, it has everything to do with its associated users and how that contributes to the social coding of the drug.
This is not to say the CIA did not do a great deal of dirty business with the cartels- they did. It is not to say that there is a great hostility to or at best indifference to the wages of emisseration in Black communities exhibited by the US government here and abroad - the entire Drug War and War on Terrorism attests to this fact.
It is only that the mistaken identification of crack as being this exotic and much more dangerous substance than its powder analogue, or compared to any drug at all (like alcohol), is itself a retroactive fiction of a White supremacist judicial system finding more ways to destroy Black communities, which is a process these powers could find any pretext for, and it actively contributes to harmful ideologies about the users of these drugs and particularly the people who do experience harmful dependencies to them. If we frame drug users and people with dependencies, and further people who sell these substances, who in other words gain a kind of employment otherwise unavailable to them, to crack as signs of their communities being weakened then they themselves are weak, bear a special responsibility for their role in that community weakness, etc and so this has an effect of shifting the blame to the most vulnerable in these communities and doesn’t really give us a good understanding about how drug markets function and what the users of these substances need in their daily lives, or why they do these things.
Maia Szalavitz and a number of other harm reduction and drug policy writers document the effects of this framing at length - Szalavits in interviews with Black harm reduction activists in her book Undoing Drugs who were often accused of being agents of cultural genocide because they were trying to institute organizations and policies meant to preserve the lives of users - including crack users. Carl Hart also discusses this at length both in terms of his biography - growing up in Miami-Dade county during the “crack epidemic” and in terms of the abundance of pharmacological research, in which he is an expert, which shows us that crack is not the demonic substance this kind of framing implies.
There is a long history of substance markets and colonialism - from coffee to opium to alcohol, with legacies we can still see. At the same time the picture of human engagement with substances and issues of dependencies are complicated. We can talk about this real linkage without being simplistic because I feel like a lack of care on this topic can have the effect of misplacing our focus.
If you tell the average person "Yeah, back in the 80s the CIA was funneling cocaine into the US and helping spread crack into Black neighborhoods in order to raise money for fascist militias in South America, and then a journalist broke the story & he 'committed suicide' by shooting himself twice in the back of the head," they're gonna look at you like you're rambling about chemtrails and space aliens, but that's just like...a thing that happened. They made a movie & everything.

What are the advantages of time recording machine in an office ?
Showing up for work punctually, at an official time, became expected behavior toward the end of the 19th century, as more and more people worked for others rather than for themselves. Not just the work force's punctuality was at issue. Cost accounting and analysis--recording and scrutinizing expenses for labor, materials and overhead--were getting more attention than ever before. Time was money.
In the 1890s, timekeepers-- clerks who kept track of employees' hours in handwritten logs --found that machines were beginning to replace them, especially in workplaces with large numbers of employees. Thanks to the influence of the advocates of scientific management, nearly every industrial workplace had a time clock, after about 1910. So did many offices. By the early twentieth century the International Time Recording Company supplied an entire line of timekeeping devices, including master clocks, several types of time clocks, and time stamps. Founded in 1900, the firm continuously expanded its product line, underwent several reorganizations and name changes, and emerged in 1924 as the International Business Machine Corporation, familiar today as IBM.One of the firm's most popular products was the card punch time recorder, a clock that could furnish a daily or weekly record of up to 150 employees. Based on the 1888 patent of physician Alexander Dey, the dial time recorder was essentially a spring-driven clock with a cast-iron wheel affixed to its dial side. The rim of the wheel was perforated with numbered holes. As employees pressed a rotating pointer into the hole at their assigned number, the machine recorded the time on a preprinted sheet and rang a bell with each punch. A two-color ribbon printed all regular time in green and all tardiness, early departures, and overtime in red. This International digital card punch time recorder hung in a factory in the garment district of New York City.
Time recording clock is a time recording machine used to record the lime of arrival and departure of an employee. The time is recorded on the card allotted to each employee of the organisation. The card is punched in this machine, which records the time of arrival and departure automatically. These machines are fitted with a clock to show the time. The advantages of the use of time recording machines are:
(a) It records the actual time of arrival and departure.
(b) It is not possible to manipulate the time in case of late arrival or early departure.
It is necessary to keep proper record of time for each worker as it ensures discipline, increases morale and makes him punctual.
This function of keeping proper record of time is looked after by the time-keeping department. In a small organisation, such a department may not exist at all since the time of coming and going can be easily regulated by the person in changes of operations in the factory or the office.
Time keeping is a system of recording the time of arrival and departure of workers; it provides a record of total time spent by each worker engaged in the factory. On the basis of this record, wages are paid to the workers under time rate system.
The regal contains the columns like name and identity no. of the worker, the department in which he is working, arrival and departure time. As soon as a worker enters into the preprint of the factory, the necessary entries in the attendance register are completed. If workers are literate; they are required to sign the attendance register.
After the reports time workers are marked late or absent as the case may be. Similar entries are made the time of departure.
This method is very simple and inexpensive. But in a large factory this meth may become inconvenient. Moreover, this method is liable for many undesirable’ practices on the part of the persons who record the attendance in collusion with sour workers. This method is suitable for small factories and out-doors workers.
Under this method, each worker is allotted a metal disc or token bearing his identification. On each disc or token the name and number of the worker is engraved or painted. All the tokens 01; discs are hung on a board at the gate or at the entrance of the department.
As soon as a worker reports for duty, he removes his disc and puts it in a box provided nearby. Immediately after the scheduled time of entry, the board is removed and a list is prepared for all such discs or tokens not collected and dropped into the box by the workers.
The late-comers collect their discs and hand over the same personally to the time keeper. The list of late-comers is prepared separately. The discs not removed from the boards represent the absentee workers.
This method is simple and economical. But it is not free from abuses. A worker may remove the disc of his fellow-worker to ensure his presence who is either late or absent.
There is no certainty that the exact arrival time of the workers has been recorded. The time keeper marking the attendance may commit errors deliberately or through carelessness and this may create disputes. Time keeper may include the dummy or ghost workers in the muster roll that cannot be easily detected except by close supervision.
2. Mechanical Methods
Different mechanical devices have been designed for recording the exact time of the workers. These include:
(a) Time Recording Clocks
(b) analogue card punch time recorder
(a) Time Recording Clocks
This method has been developed to remove some of the difficulties faced in case of manual methods. Under this method, the attendance is marked by a time recording clock on a card. Every worker is allotted a time card usually for one week duration.
These time cards are serially arranged in a tray at the gate of the factory. On arrival the worker picks up his card from the tray and inserts the same into the time recording clock which prints the exact arrival time at the space provided on the card against the particular day.
This process is repeated when the worker leaves the factory after day’s work. Other particulars of time in respect of late arrival, lunch, and overtime are printed is red colour so as to distinguish these from normal period spent in the factory.
This method is useful when the number of workers is fairly large. There are also no chances of disputes arising due to recording of time of workers as it is recorded by the clock and not by the time keeper.
But there are chances that a worker may get his friend’s card from the tray and mark him present in time when he is actually late or absent. Any mechanical defect may adversely affect the working of time recording system.
The dial time recorder is a machine which records the correct attendance time of the worker automatically. It has a dial around the clock with a number of hold (usually about 150), each of which bears a number corresponding to the identification number of the worker concerned.
There is a radial arm at the centre of the dial. While a worker enters into the factory; he is required to press the radial arm after placing ill at the appropriate hole. The time recorder then automatically records the time on a roll of paper within the machine against the number of the worker.
This machine can also! calculate the wages of the workers with greater accuracy and avoids much loss of time, I But a heavy capital investment is needed and hence only large organisations can use It is also necessary to have a close supervision on every worker to prevent fraud and I irregularities.

Manifest Season 3 Episodes 5 and 6
It was a smart move to air these two particular episodes of Manifest back-to-back, as it brings the meth-head arc to a close in an unexpected manner and pivots to a whole new way of looking at the death dates and the callings. There were plenty of big moments in “Water Landing” and “Graveyard Spiral” that made the two-hour event worth tuning in for, and the satisfying revelations glossed over some of the flaws that, as usual, come from character motivations that lack believability because of the prophetic compulsions that act as their only explanation.
Chief among these is the complete lack of chemistry between Pete and Angelina. We’re told that one criminal in “The Last Trial” parable chose love and was redeemed, but that analogue is far from adequate to explain the attachment between the two returnees, who seem to have nothing more in common than a fondness for King Cone ice cream. Angelina’s only purpose in the final hour was to deliver handcuff keys and a kiss that lacked so much passion that the camera had to cut to an overhead shot just to add drama to the moment, COVID restrictions notwithstanding.

The other hollow plot point comes from the bland evil of Manifest’s latest villain, Jace. Where’s the righteous fury of the meth cook who last season spoke of holy vengeance, telling Michaela, “This is bigger than both of us”? Now he’s waffling between going to the lake to push Michaela off a cliff and targeting Cal whose death he believes will bring him immortality. His insanity and evil-for-evil’s sake has no pizzazz, and there was never even a glimmer of hope that he might earn redemption by choosing not to hurt anyone.
Those two elements aside, the two hour adventure was a real thrill ride! Even smaller moments — like when Vance’s men grabbed Jared off the street while Saanvi ran after them or even when the reporter tracked Tarik to his cabin, ruining Grace’s hiding place — felt appropriately dramatic even when the consequences were minimal. In the background, there’s still Ben’s promise to become the “unicorn” to be studied by Dr. Patel and the fact that Drea now knows about the callings. Those aren’t small details!
And what about that empathic sonic boom that exploded out of Zeke and Michaela when he pulled her up over the cliff edge by her dislocated shoulder? It’s a bombshell that manages to become merely a stepping stone towards the showdown at Tarik’s house. Meanwhile, the reminiscing about childhood plans hatched in the root cellar serve only to accentuate the tragedy of Tarik’s death and introduce a badass, gun-toting Grace, but each of these moments are like raindrops creating separate ripples in a pond before a downpour roils the entire surface.
Because make no mistake, a storm is coming! Olive’s discovery upon recovering the missing papyrus piece changes everything. It’s unclear whether the initial removal of the artifact has any meaning beyond creating an obstacle for Olive to conquer, but with the realization that returnees are judged in groups comes the question: will all of the passengers of Flight 828 have to work together to conquer their collective death date? Or is there a deeper meaning to the deadly rapture of the meth dealers?
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
The second half of Manifest season 3 will likely explore those questions, and the compelling nature of the ever-shifting mystery keeps us from dwelling on why Ben would happily send Michaela to the lake alone knowing that Jace was destined to attack her. Or how Kory got from the hospital to the root cellar before Jace, even with his bad leg. The narrative bumps in this series are familiar by now and are upstaged by the central mythology that keeps us coming back for more.
