Join Tara this evening at 8 pm (EST) for a live painting demo on her IG feed. 😍 Tara Krebs is a Toronto-based artist and storyteller whose work addresses themes of nature, identity, magic, and narrative. Though Tara’s visual language extends to a number of creative media, she is best known for her intricate pop surrealist paintings, and as the author/illustrator of the interactive storybook "You'll Distract the Boys!": A Choose-Your-Own Compendium of Female Existence. “I think it’s important for artists to get out of their comfort zones. Maybe try something different - a different way of working, a different medium, a different way of approaching a subject. To that end I sometimes like to do quick gouache/watercolor and ink pieces. It is something different than oils, which is where I am most comfortable, but I’m able to explore another area of my creativity. “Surrounded by moats of water the figures in my recent work seem protected but isolated, much as I have felt since the beginning of the pandemic. Their bodies appear to be part fortress part reliquary and are marked with the effects of climate change. They also show evidence of a battle between science and superstition. Not only humans are affected by this global upheaval but animals flee their barns and seek higher ground, strange hybrid creatures emerge (watch out for Pizzly bears!) and the landscape is damaged by extremes of fire or flood. Our artist of the day is @michaelcampbellart! 🍄 Michael Campbell lives and works in the San Francisco Bay-Area. He grew up in the Midwest in the 1970's amid the handicraft movement with a home full of macramé, decoupage, and paper-mâché. 1,600 miles away from Haight-Ashbury, he made God's eyes in Cub Scouts and glued macaroni onto wooden crosses in Sunday School. “My goal for my art is pretty simple, but I just want people to feel included, welcome and happy. By nature I am an anxious person and I can get overwhelmed pretty easy. Painting is my safe place where I get to paint things that bring me joy and comfort. These animal portraits are very challenging and I’m constantly pushing myself to improve, but also I love them. I hope those feelings I pour into them come out to the people that bring my work into their home. We just released these two small paintings and a series of Yokai drawings in honor of the day! 🖤💙 Check it out online at www.moderneden.com Sandra Yagi was raised in suburban Denver Colorado, the oldest of a typical suburban middle class family. From an early age, she loved science, especially biology, and drawing. Yagi cites the following artists and providing inspiration and influence: Titian, Vesalius, Albinus, Caravaggio, Delacroix, Goya, Jerome Witkin, Bill Viola, Walton Ford, Masami Teraoka and William Kentridge. She has participated in several group shows at the gallery, and most notably a solo exhibition ‘Primal Renderings’ in 2011.
