feel free to ignore if you don't have an answer but could i ask how does religion word in the hahe universe?? i was reading through it again and there was a background character in the lab wearing a hijab,, in a world where literal tangible g-ds exist are islam & judaism & sikhism religious practices ect. as prevalent?? is it more a historical practice at this point than anything? like was it just a matter of how early communities interpreted it & split off into their own collective religions?
like religion is certainly very gray area and i honestly dont think you have to genuinely believe in something existence to practice or have faith in something,, maybe i am taking a silly little part of the comic too seriously but i really like thinking abt it. do u have any thoughts??
So, the way religion works on mesonia is basically like, gods are real and everyone knows that they're real, so there's no "athiests" in the earthly sense (a mesonian atheist is just a person who refuses to worship any gods, not someone who believes the gods arent real. So moreso "aworship" than "atheist")
People who do worship gods (which is the majority of people) have a base respect for all of the gods, but usually put majority of their religious care into worshipping one specific God. Some of these gods have visual indicators that someone worships them, oftentimes a piece of clothing/accessory but occasionally it will involve body modification (followers of Adya get the triangle symbol branded onto their skin in memory of her being destroyed by light/burning).
Characters with hijabs worship the goddess of the dead, Mesophanteen!Partially to look similar to her (she wears a veil that covers her head and most of her face) but also as part of their belief that some parts of them should only be seen by the gods of the dead once they move on to the afterlife
There aren't any monoreligions such as Islam or Christianity, but there are some similarities between certain god-worshippers and certain earth religions, if just due to the meta reason of me having grown up on earth and mostly being surrounded by monoreligions
You definitely aren't taking anything too seriously, a lot of the stuff I put into half heart- even in the background- has meaning and intent and I find it fun to talk about these meanings!!!

Im not sure if this has been answered before but how did John Freasa become a cat?
So a few months after half heart ends he dies because Eliza becomes sick of his bullshit. Gretchen later decides she needs his help for a project related to how gods' powers work (since he is the most knowledgeable human about the gods that she knew) so she has Adya help her talk to Mesophanteen (goddess of the dead) about bringing him back (Mesophanteen feels bad for Adya so she agrees). He needed a host to live in and since his body is unusable and no one is willing to share theirs, the goddess decides that a cat and a human are probably similar enough for him to be able to function in the overworld. So she makes him a cat so he can be alive again
As for meta reasons, I thought it would be really funny if the cat man became a real cat, man

Wait so is she not dead? Or is this not current?
She is dead as the Returner! She works for the Gods of Death (Moribonse and Mesophanteen) to return lost souls (ghosts) to the underworld. The reason she wears the mask is because her lungs don't work due to her dying of organ failure, so she can't breathe on the overworld without it

What's the difference job-wise and/or lore-wise between moribonse and mesophanteen?
Moribonse collects the souls of the dead when they die and brings them to the underworld/afterlife, he's the God of Death
Mesophanteen rules over the souls of the dead, manages them, decides when a soul will be destroyed so its energy can make a new soul, etc, and lives only in the underworld. She's the Goddess of the Dead
It's essentially the difference between Thanatos and Hades
Also Moribonse is older than Mesophanteen, and he committed the first murder/act of death which is why he became the god of it. The other gods associated with death such as Meso and the horsemen were born/created after him to further manage humanity's relationship with death
