'And she cried me a river'

This Giant Necklace for an imagined mermaid begins a body of work that inhabits a near future world. Exploring female representation in Western Mythology my giant female protagonist reconsiders stories in our collective unconscious whilst giving agency to the often unspoken and silenced female voices.

Her necklace is an influence for our group ceramics project for Wearable/unwearable. As one piece our necklace will not be wearable by us individually , to make it wearable we will remove the beads individually to place on our own body.

The themes of myth and women place in society today is a topic Im interested in developing. I find her color theme is feminine and her glazes represent the color palette of the ocean and seascape in this piece.

She has an extensive display of work which I think may help to inform my research as I continue in my ceramics elective on a continual basis.

She uses the floor as well as the ceiling to display her ceramics as sculptural pieces finding a way to exhibit without being hemmed in by conventional ideas of ceramics.

Tide pool necklace made using a limpet ring shell that I electroformed in copper and gave a natural rustic verdigris patina. Inside the rock pool are mermaid treasures like conical shells, periwinkles, micro shells and seaweed all carefully foraged so as not to diminish the environment.
