So, yaaaaaaay!! I’ve finally reached 1500 followers! I will post my Q&A vid as soon as I can, but I’m in the middle of my exams at the moment (my first one is tomorrow, in fact) and I’ve also been quite unwell, so it might take a few weeks, but it will be done!

What if, like so many of the prophecies Merlin heard during his time at Camelot, the Once and Future King prophecy fell flat? If maybe in the time after Arthur Merlin told stories and Geoffrey of Monmouth told stories and Percival and Leon and Guinevere told stories - the bards remembered King Arthur Pendragon of Albion. 

Arthur became a legend and a myth. He became a symbol and an ideal, he became something far beyond anything he could have been in life. The storied King, fair and just, wise and powerful, brave and gracious. Once. 

 Time after time, crises happened, and Merlin wondered time after time, will it be today? What he didn't realize was that it was. It was that day, every time. Because some person would remember King Arthur, fair and just, wise and powerful, brave and gracious. Someone heard the songs, the stories, the legends, the myths. Someone fought in the name of King Arthur, and in that person, for that moment, Arthur lived on. Future. 

 In other words, what if the prophecy was a metaphor that Merlin took literally? (who can blame him, he didn't take prophecies about Morgana or Mordred seriously and the worst happened-) Magic cannot restore life to the dead, not truly. There is no magic so powerful that it can bring people back from the dead; a shade is never the light. 

Emrys is immortal, but Merlin waits for a magic that can never come to pass in a literal sense. Arthur - his Arthur, blond haired, rough, sword carrying, red favoring, chainmail wearing Arthur can never breathe again. Only King Arthur's name does. That lives as long as Emrys does, eternal, once, and future.

Merlin is immortal, and Arthur will eventually rise again. But resurrection is not the same as immortality. Will Merlin wait for Arthur all that time just to see him die again? Could Merlin himself make it through seeing Arthur die twice before him and not be broken completely?

Merlin Headcanon:

It takes him a long while - years even (he’s not sure, he stopped counting) - to learn that he couldn’t die. Illnesses and plagues came and went, loved ones lived and died (in sibbe gereste, Arthur, Gwaine, Gaius, Mother…), reckless and suicidal missions were won and gone. Through each, Merlin thought he might die, but didn’t. As it happens, drowning doesn’t work. Neither does poison. Neither magic nor sword do either. He knows, he’s tried.

It takes him a long while - years even (he’s not sure, he stopped counting) - to come to peace with it. Great waves of grief wash over him from time to time, but he is an affront to magic and to life itself if he wastes either. He’s never certain he deserves this power (punishment), but he has come to peace with it. He sets out to live a life (many lives). 

It takes him a long while - years even (he’s not sure, he stopped counting) - to realize that Arthur was truly coming back. Merlin is there, ready, waiting at the lake, to greet him, to take him home. 

It takes him a long while - years even (he’s not sure, he stopped counting) - to realize that he still isn’t aging.

Arthur dies again.

It takes him a long while - years even (he’s not sure, he stopped counting) - to feel human again; it’s too much, too much, too much. He’s still broken when he feels it.

It takes him a long while - years even (he’s not sure, he stopped counting) - to realize that Arthur has many futures. And it’s okay (it’s okay) because Merlin has many futures, or one constant future, or - it doesn’t matter, it’s been so long that he stopped counting. He greets Arthur at the lake.

(One future, many futures from now, from then - Merlin begins aging. He suspects that the world doesn’t need their help anymore. He follows Arthur home.)

hello friends thanks for sticking with me as i was away the past few days! I was up at a conference at another camp for a few days, which was awesome!! I’m covered in bug bites but very happy with my experience. How is everyone?
