10 hours into Eternia!!!!
Just got Efreet and on our way to... mountain whose name i forgot. i'll find it eventually.
also if 10 hours sounds kinda long for this point in the story well. lebt's just say. i got a little too into some of the minigames. i found out the arithmetic stone pile guy does NOT give you anything special for beating lv100 (but i have 15 miracle gels now) and the time challenge in the desert city was the only time i used manual mode āœØ
semi-related i was WONDERING what on earth i'd be using lens for since it wasn't an inventory item but apparently Irene (Destiny) hangs out in that desert town and gives you stuff for every 10 you find. ty for the combo accessory thingy i will not be using it :D
thoughts so far:
Reid does not want to be here lmao
Farah is lovely but uhhh very. impulsive. it's cute but i worry
somehow these two are responsible for something that happened to/in their village when they were younger?? curious when that will come up again
Meredy :3
also curious about the celestian stuff!!! i've been theorizing in my head whether the glow when she's near Reid (and other guy who is totally a disguised prince but left after Sylph dungeon) is bc they're connected to celestia somehow? it's been established that all celestians look similar to Meredy and have a forehead gem so my original thought of 'also celestian but somehow crossed over earlier' isn't right
Keele is pathetic (affectionate) but i worry his character development comes with a Price
Keele might actually for real betray us perhaps. He stayed behind when we left Inferia initially and now he's back but. hmmmmm (price of character development... maybe.....)
And as a last note I'm playing the undubbed psp version on my vita so jp voices āœØāœØ and i can only half understand the navigational skits since they're not subbed rip

Reidā€™s a sweetheart. Meredy was very upset and on the verge of tears after hearing Keele say that Celestians are bad luck. (This anime takes place when Keele was still a bit racist) And nobody knew what to say.
This isnā€™t the best way to deal with things longterm of course. But it was really sweet of Reid.Ā

Some final thoughts on Eternia Replay
It was great going through this game again.Ā  Like, I remembered it pretty fondly, and not just because I mostly played it with my best friend (though that was definitely part of the nostalgia), and replaying it was like, oh, this is why.Ā
It takes Tales Quirk and went full out quirky, which could have possibly gone too quirky, but didnā€™t.Ā  Instead it was just quirkier than normal with the occasional gag that would make it over the top done just occasionally enough.Ā
I also just love the characters so much.Ā  For a male protag, Reid is very much not a heroic lead.Ā  Heā€™s got no ambitions beyond filling his own stomach and cloud watching, and while that eventually expands to Keeping those he Loves Safe, he really only came along because Farah was like, WE MUST HELP PEOPLE and forced him to come.Ā  Heā€™s also the Character Afraid of Ghosts, which is usually a female character (I... canā€™t think of another male character that trait went to in Tales, actually, though I might just be forgetting or it could be one of the games I havenā€™t played), since itā€™s just not manly and in girls itā€™s cuter or something.Ā  However in this game itā€™s Reid, and heā€™s 100% I Donā€™t Want to Go If Itā€™s Scary.Ā  He does anyway, because his friends are idiots and he canā€™t leave them alone, but he will Protest.Ā  And when you have him look in the mirror and he says ā€œDonā€™t look at me like that.ā€ IT HURTS, OKAY.
Heā€™s also perfectly fine with saying the Sappy Stuff about friends fighting together, like itā€™s not even dragged out of him he just says if Balir comes at us 100%, weā€™ll just give it our 400% because thatā€™s what fighting with friends is about.Ā
Farah, on the other hand, is willing to help everyone who needs helping.Ā  Sheā€™s optimistic and a fighter, and just, I love her a lot.Ā  Speaking of Things That Hurt when Farah says ā€œKnowing that my efforts helped to bring happiness to others makes me feel... comfortable.Ā  Iā€™ve always been that way.ā€ And Ras comes back with ā€œI see.Ā  Those are deep wounds.Ā  What is it that has made you so downhearted?Ā  From what do you run?ā€Ā  And itā€™s just like, fuck you, Ras, I did not need those feels.Ā  Then upon reaching Celestia, Farah has to face that along with her past eventually, all while coming out bright and sunny in the end with her will to help people even stronger.Ā
Keele starts out as a jerk who is a bit of a wimp, but I think one of the strengths of this game is really having dynamic rather than static main characters, and Keele has the most visual changes.Ā  He starts out being all ā€œCelestia canā€™t have that sort of technology!ā€ and not believing anything Meredy says and goes to just, flat out in awe of her saying sheā€™s incredible.Ā  He still has a bit to go in learning how to properly express his feelings, but again, thereā€™s clear moments where he realizes whatā€™s going on and sees the need to change.Ā  Which is one of the major themes of the game, that people can change and thatā€™s why they should keep this world.Ā  XDĀ
Honestly, I would die for Meredy.Ā  Like, I have So Many Feels about her and would take a bullet for her without hesitating.Ā  She completely upstages Reid as The Hero, especially in the last scenes.Ā  Sheā€™s the one who started the journey to save the worlds and she decided from the get go she was going to use her power to do it if she had to and sheā€™s just so fucking adorable while sheā€™s at it.Ā  I feel like Namco actually reversed a lot of usual gender tropes in this game and it just worked so well.Ā  It didnā€™t feel forced or anything, it just flipped a lot of things and went with it.Ā  AND THE ENDING.Ā  She tells Keele to take care of Quickie, then her mother, the main Boss who was controlled by the being who wanted to destroy everything so there wouldnā€™t be any pain or suffering, gains consciousness to tell her to step aside, and farewells arenā€™t forever.Ā  Like, This was what the game wanted to focus itā€™s main emotional pull on in itā€™s final moments.Ā  A mother who wanted everything to end because of all the pain and suffering she went through, only to decide to save her daughter who wants everyone to live because she loves the world. Ā
And before all that happens, when Meredyā€™s all like, this will definitely destroy me to save everyone, but I love this world and everything/everyone in it, so Iā€™m fine with it.Ā  That.Ā  That will fuck me up Every Single Time.Ā  She was prepared from the get go to be a Big Damned Hero and she does not waver.Ā  Even after all the racism and death and hurt she went through, she loves the world.Ā  And I just Have Feels and Will Be Crying in this Club Tonight.Ā
The side playable characters are much more static and to be fair, I didnā€™t use either of them much in battle, which is kind of sad.Ā  I still really love Chat (and Absolutely Agree and Support trans headcanons for her) and her Van Eltia.Ā  Sheā€™s also super cute.Ā  I really enjoyed her character, and can I say that I love the original design for the Van Eltia.Ā  ITā€™S PRETTY AND COLORFUL.Ā  And Chat has every right to be proud of her.Ā  XD
Max is... well.Ā  Yeah!Ā
Sorry, I had to.Ā  Probably the character I cared least about, and the game Knew It, which was hilarious.Ā  Like, even his Night Before Going Off To Final Battle scene was just him looking out at the sea while the one who actually got character rounding out in that scene was Ayla, his second in command.Ā  He wasnā€™t even there for it either.Ā  The game put absolutely no emotional pull into him, acknowledged this, then committed to it so heā€™s just comic relief that you canā€™t actually hate because the game doesnā€™t take any focus away from the others you like.
Ras I could take or leave, but like, heā€™s only with you a short time and you donā€™t see his character changes or really much of his motivations beyond what they Told rather than Showed.Ā  I was actually more attached to the NPC Roen who was his best friend.Ā  But I did enjoy the effect his death ends up having on Reid and Farah.Ā  Like, he was fridged (and Reid, Farah, Roen, and the Princess got character development from it), and I was okay with that rather than being all How Dare.Ā  He was always a character more felt through others than one you saw much of himself anyway.Ā Ā
Also, Eternia has one of the very few minigames from hell that is actually enjoyable.Ā  Whis may be Uno from Hell, but itā€™s also really fun?Ā  Like, youā€™re more likely to get screwed over than anything, so you might as well go down screwing over everyone else.Ā  Forget Tales poker games, Bamco, bring back Whis.Ā
Over all the game is just fun and I enjoyed the plot a lot.Ā  The English dub is...Ā  awful is probably putting it mildly, and I donā€™t mean this in a ā€œthe actors were terribleā€ way though donā€™t get me started on Child Reid, but the sound quality was like someone with a cheap microphone in someoneā€™s basement.Ā  But it wasnā€™t enough to detract from my enjoyment of the game.Ā  I do think I would like an undub patch, but I didnā€™t see one when searching for the game.Ā  It also probably wouldnā€™t be the same without Meredyā€™s You Bet! or Farahā€™s No Problem! either.Ā  XD
I definitely loved the replay, so Iā€™m glad I was able to figure out how to play it on my PS3.Ā  I might go for Abyss next, since I started Symphonia and just...Ā  I might go for Abyss next.Ā  I have an undub patch for it, which kind of makes me sad because I do remember enjoying the english dub, but what little I played through Symphonia reminded me of how much the unvoiced skits were mind numbing.Ā  Being able to switch it to the fully voiced Japanese made such a difference.Ā  Iā€™d like to also try to get Destiny and a undubed LegendiaĀ  (the voice acting in Legendia, like with Abyss, wasnā€™t awful like Eterniaā€™s, but half the game going unvoiced is something Iā€™d rather not go through again).Ā  Weā€™ll see which one I get working first at any rate.Ā  My Tales replay will not end here.Ā  XD

i havenā€™t really been taking about eterniaā€™s plot so iā€™m gonna dump the synopsis so far under a readmore in case anyoneā€™s interested
the setting is called Eternia, perhaps unsurprisingly, and it consists of two worlds? maybe planets maybe not, called Inferia and Celestia, which are separated by the sky (and whatever magical properties cause it to form a barrier between the two). there hasnā€™t been contact between them for 2000 years apparently but theyā€™re still there, and their joint existence is common knowledge.
Magic is powered by entities called Craymels, which are kinda like spirits? Theyā€™re not like particles in the air, because there are papers positing that Craymels are sentient, but they exist on a higher plane of consciousness from humans so itā€™s not like thereā€™s communication between them. And there are Greater Craymels (the classic Tales series elemental summons, Efreet Undine Sylph and Gnome) which hold great power over Craymels and the balance of the world and yadda yadda you get the idea.
plot starts with two youths from a quiet farming hamlet on Inferia, Reid and Farah, whose peaceful moment at a favorite hangout is interrupted by the crash landing of a spacecraft.Ā  Reaching the crash site, they find a mysterious girl and her pet mascot critter, later revealed to be named Meredy and Quickie. (side note i hate quickieā€™s name and itā€™s only made worse by the fact that it talks like a pokemon)
Meredy speaks an unfamiliar language called Melnics which Reid and Farah donā€™t understand, but when they take her to the village elder for help, he orders Meredy to be cast out, and shortly thereafter a strange man attacks them. Sensing the danger, Farah decides to bring Meredy to see their old friend Keele who went to college in the city, as heā€™s studied Melnics and can possibly interpret for her. Reid is dragged along because he emits a strange light whenever Meredy touches him, and this is apparently very important to her so she insists that he come along.
After pissing off the dean of Keeleā€™s university when Meredy blows up a lab room (donā€™t worry about it), they go and find Keele living on a zombie-infested mountainside, and with his interpretation they find out Meredyā€™s plan is to gather the Greater Craymels to prevent some kind of catastrophe. They take her to see Keeleā€™s former professor in a forest town where he gives the Inferian party members special earrings that supposedly should let them understand Melnics like the babel fish from Hitchhikerā€™s Guide. And it works, after a short dungeon, but for some reason Meredyā€™s dialogue is still written with simplified grammar, because...? The writers couldnā€™t decide how they wanted to do that language barrier thing and got confused.
Anyway, Meredy now tells everyone that Inferia and Celestia are going to collide in an event she calls the Great Fall, and that everyoneā€™s gonna be fucked, but her plan is to gather the Greater Craymels so they can stop it. After asking around in town, the group is pointed toward a spring where Undine is supposed to dwell, and they go there, and she does, and they fight her to prove their strength and she joins the group willingly.
At this point Reid, Farah and Keele are noticing how high the stakes have suddenly become, and Keele suggests they go to the capital of Inferia and tell the King about all this so the government can get on it. After a trek through a forest full of grim reaper ghost things, everyone gets to Inferia City and wades through a sea of snotty-ass rich people to try and get an audience with the king. After three failed attempts to appeal to various authority figures, the party gets fucking arrested for spreading rumors about the Great Fall, and sentenced to death, because of course.
The execution begins as scheduled, but the intervention of someone the group previously tried to contact (the royal astronomer that Keele looks up to) saves everybody. Keele goes off to do some investigation with him, and they confirm later that night that the distance between Inferia and Eternia is rapidly shortening. Reid, Farah and Meredy sleep that night with the former feeling very confident that heā€™ll be able to go home and relax soon, while the royal entourage comes up with a plan to deal with the end of the world. They announce it the next morning.
The problem is that the Inferians as a society are all super xenophobic, so the Kingā€™s whole plan to prevent the Great Fall is to declare war on Celestia, because of course they must be doing this on purpose. The astronomer dude mentions that the plan is for the Inferian knights to use something called the Bridge of Light to reach Celestia, so they group decides (i.e. Farah decides and Reid eventually acquiesces) to grab the Greater Craymels and get to the Bridge of Light quick so they can intervene.
Keele stays in town to work at the astronomerā€™s place, but the rest of the group pops onto a ship and heads to a different continent, where a merchant with suspicious long blonde hair and a bard-like outfit named Ras offers to guide them to the cave where Sylph lives. Meredy can generate the same light touching him as when touching Reid, which she calls Fibril, so sheā€™s very pleased with him. Ras brings the group to the cave, which is under royal watch. Ras seemingly sweet-talks the guards into letting them pass, but Reid doesnt trust it. Anyway, they go in and get Sylph, and Ras says he left the magic craymel oven on at home and dips out.
The only direction anyone gets is to look for the next Greater Craymel in hot places, so with Keele returning after getting kicked out of the capital and Sylph letting the group use a weird hover disc to cross water, they go to a volcano across the world, go in, and fight Efreet and grab him too. Then another Greater Craymel named Rem appears, apparently the one who regulates the others? She breaks the news that the Greater Craymels actually canā€™t do shit about the Great Fall, because
Tumblr media
Which, ruh roh! That sucks! Keele is mad that Meredy didnā€™t tell him, and starts assuming that the Celestians really are causing this shit on purpose (because heā€™s kind of a dick), but Meredy insists itā€™s a specific guy named Balir whoā€™s doing it. Reid connects some dots, figuring out that Balir is the guy who was said to discover the Bridge of Light and then never return-- meaning heā€™s from Inferia and not Celestia. In order to stop what now appears to be some attempt to turn the two worlds against each other, the group gears up to go find the Bridge of Light and cross over to Celestia.
Aaaaand thatā€™s where I left off. I think weā€™re approaching the Arc 1 endpoint with this.

A new chapter is out, and you know what that means: uncalled for and very silly blogging commentary from yours truly! Under cut for length, pictures, and GASP vague Tales of Eternia spoilers. Quickie was one of the less annoying mascots, actually. At least heā€™s cute.
Tumblr media
Aaand here we go with the massive spoilers in the character descriptions again! Honestly, Rays is a ride. Then again, I forgot most things about Eternia, so thanks for the reminder. It was something about Farah and Reid find Meredy and donā€™t understand shit because Melnics, but Farah is Farah and thus drags you to leave your tiny village and go somewhere for some reason, and then you meet Keele and he keeps being like this for the entire game (except when Meredy forces him to apologize), and at some point you get the babelfish earrings I donā€™t even know how anymore, and you go to that huge-ass university city and I might have gotten lost there, and at some point you meet that idiot Ras who hits on Farah and is generally very suspicious, and of course he betrays you, and for some reason you travel to Celestia, and Meredyā€™s hometown actually looked pretty cool with all the (bioluminiscent? Or was it actually electricity? Heck if I could remember) lights, and for some reason Reid gets some cool rainbow powers (sadly, only in name, not in actual looks. Yeah, disappointing, I know), and then there was some really annoying puzzle dungeon with portraits of the Destiny crew on the walls, and you could summon them in battle if you wanted to. It was cute. And somehow you meet Chat who is really annoying but owns the one and only Van Eltia, and that other big pirate guy whose name I canā€™t even remember. And then you fight the big fat monster boss whoā€™s actually Meredyā€™s mom but itā€™s not her fault. OR SOMETHING. ā€¦Yeah, thatā€™s what I remember from the story. Iā€™m sorry. I donā€™t even remember whether Reid and Farah had a talk under the stars, although Tales experience tells me that they probably had. Still, Meredy and Keele were the FAR more obvious couple in that game. As for thatā€¦
Tumblr media
As if we didnā€™t already have enough squishy mages, bookworms, and/or general nerds in our party yet. At least someone finally snaps at our protagonist losers. I was waiting for Leon to be the first one to NOT be nice to total strangers at first, but since that little fuckerā€™s still not here, yeah, I guess it had to be Keele. Unfriendly as always, my son. Youā€™ll make a fine professor.
Tumblr media
THE HECK YOUā€™LL DO Youā€™re both squishy mages, stay the fuck back Honestly I need Stahn. Like pronto. My poor feeble heart canā€™t deal with all these heart attacks from shimmera thingies hitting my army of squishy mages. Honestly when we did we get last get another melee ally who can actually take hits? BTW Iā€™m low-key disappointed that neither Meredy nor Keele can actually summon, but maybe someday weā€™ll get Sheena, Klarth or Reala, and some of them can do it? Iā€™m very fond of summon magic, okay
Tumblr media
Aaaaaand Karia the general of all ship captains is back at it again. Honestly that stupid sprite is the worst shipper on deck Iā€™ve ever seen. Then again this game is generally pretty shippy with its totally not subtle at all shippy mirrage artwork.
Tumblr media
SO WHEREā€™S MY BEAUTIFUL PUN MOM LAILAH THEN I WANT HER
Tumblr media
Yeah, you could put one of your other subtle machinations to work, Karia. Last time I checked, you sent Mikleo flying down a hole and into a pond of vanilla extract, then send Sorey on a candy ruin tour to rescue him (and probably find a soundproof room afterwards), and proceeded to point out Judeā€™s painfully-obvious-to-absolutely-anyone-but-Milla-who-needs-a-goddamn-NPC-to-point-it-out-to-her-and-then-still-never-addresses-it crush on Milla on every possible occasion. I trust you, little flying queen of shipping. Youā€™ll find something for these two. And probably send Ix and Mileena on a romantic candlelight dinner. Or Mileena and Milla, who knows.

I finally figured what I want to do with this girl I've had lying around! I've had this wig for a while and put it in pigtails for the heck of it and hey! It's Meredy from Tales of Eternia! ...sorta. I've gotta dye her and mod her eyes open a bit moreand get her a better wig since this one's a pain to get into pigtails and looks super bleh, as well as a body and then I can start on her Inferia and Celestia outfits <3 but yeah, I can now have my all time favourite Tales character in doll form!

For the game thing how about 28, 29, 30?
28: Which character's clothes do you wish you owned the most?
ummmmmmm
probably meredyā€™s celestia clothes! itā€™s really pretty honestly?? like i seriously wished, during my short-lived eternia playthrough, that there was a costume choice for her that removed the simple dress she wears over her celestia dress because itā€™s a darn shame not to see it. :I
otherwise i guess id go with coletteā€™s default outfit or natsuhiā€™s outfit (from umineko)
29: Which is more important, gameplay or story?
STORY!! tho a good gameplay plan is always good for cushioning.
30: A game that hasn't been localized in your country that you think should be localized?
well honestly if i considerĀ ā€˜home-homeā€™ no gameā€™s ever going to be localized if itā€™s not just straight up imported, so thereā€™s nothing to answer there.

Letā€™s go back to this screenshot for a second. I finished watching episode 8 and I have thoughts and theories.
So, Melnics is written all over the island the anime takes place on. The monsters have elara and thereā€™s a festival that celebrates an event that Meredy had seen on Celestia.Ā
Every single person who lives on this island is wearing something that covers their forehead. And they all have dark skin.Ā
Theyā€™re all Celestians, arenā€™t they? Iā€™m guessing they all have elara and that will be revealed near the end.Ā  An elara, for anybody reading this who hasnā€™t played Eternia, is a glass bead all Celestians have on their forehead. You can see Meredyā€™s very clearly. (Iā€™m using the description in the game. Iā€™m not 100% sure about calling it a bead. But it is Farah who has been explaining it.)
It wasnā€™t until seeing the Melnics everywhere and the monsters that I put the pieces together and started noticing that theyā€™re all covering their foreheads.
