“Meredith, Alone” by Claire Alexander – Book Review @GrandCentralPub @ClaireAWriter #MeredithAlone #BookReview
I had a fantastic time sharing in Meredith’s apartment life. She was a character that you couldn’t help but root for. This debut novel reminded me quite strongly of “Elinor Oliphant Is Completely Fine“, but that being said, Meredith Maggs had her own unique voice and is much more socially savvy than Elinor. Meredith had little self esteem due to her mother belittling her throughout her…

I had heard such great things about Meredith Alone and I’m so glad I bumped it up my TBR and gave it a chance. This is a novel that you read when you want to experience the height of all different human emotions. Sadness, trepidation, laughter and joy - this story has it all and more besides. Meredith Maggs is a woman who hasn’t left her house for 1,214 days. She works full time remotely, has a beloved feline companion called Fred and has a best friend Sadie, who stops by regularly with her two children. Meredith keeps herself busy after work with jigsaw puzzles, cooking and making new friends online but it’s not till an unexpected visitor turns up at her door that she begins to challenge the life that she is currently living. As the story progresses, we go back in time to Meredith’s tumultuous childhood and the nature of her relationship with her estranged sister. As a reader, we begin to understand the events in her past that has led to her current situation, that is, a prisoner in her own home. Meredith Alone gave me so many Eleanor Oliphant vibes but I loved how it stood on its own as a great representation of isolation, social anxiety, unresolved trauma, agoraphobia and the struggles with poor mental health. Meredith is an instantly loveable and charming character which makes it even easier to root for her, desperately hoping for that elusive happy ending. This book was touching, thoughtful and inspiring and I can only hope that other readers get as many positive things as I did from it. Absolutely an author to watch out for! Hello everyone! Hope you’ve had a good week, happy Friday to you all. It’s time for a book haul and three new hardbacks I’m excited for. Meredith Alone got my attention for being a great priced book in the first instance (£4 😂) being set in Scotland and I’m planning to buddy read it soon. It’s about Meredith Maggs who hasn’t left her house for 1,214 days. However, she insists she isn’t alone. Something is about to change. Suddenly her carefully curated home is no longer a place to hide. Whether Meredith likes it or not, the world is coming to her door. I got excited about Violets when I saw the fabulous @savidgereads talk about it. It’s described as an astonishing debut novel of motherhood and loss in the dying days of the Second World War. From what I’ve read so far, it looks like it’s going to be a difficult read for me personally speaking but sometimes the best fiction is something that speaks to you on an emotional level. Finally, We All Fall Down was the book inside my @illumicrate subscription box. It’s the first book in a dark fantasy YA duology about the power and danger of stories and the untold costs of keeping magic alive. It hasn’t got the best reviews on Goodreads but that makes me even more intrigued to read it with @keeperofpages to see what we think!! 🧐 I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #bookhaul #morebooksplease📚 #meredithalone #clairealexander #violets #alexhyde #weallfalldown #roseszabo #yafantasy #literaryfiction #contemporaryfiction #newbooksforme #hardbacktbr #iwillreadthesebooks https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg4zyhAr1ME/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
