Exposición Mary Quant
Tumblr media

Hey! I saw your post about your all-female King Lear and I'm very interested... Mind sharing a bit more? Thank you so much!! (Sending hugs
Ahhh I’m so late to reply to this, forgive me! Tagging @suits-of-woe and @lovesjustachemical because it’s Shakespeare-in-Seattle! :)
So, LEAR(s)
Tumblr media
LEAR(s) was my first professional credit post-undergrad. I served as Assistant Director to Beau Prichard. The show ran two weekends at the Slate Theater in August 2017. (The Slate, once an indie black box, has since been purchased by Fern Shakespeare Company.) My dear friend and colleague, Cassie, had already been cast in the 12-woman ensemble and she encouraged Beau to bring me on board. Two years later, she played Miss Holloway/Queen Escalus in R+J: The Parkland Project.

Beau’s concept for the production was simple. He divided the text of King Lear into three one-hour acts and cast three female actors as Lear. Three actresses for Lear’s three stages of madness. As the character’s instability increased, so did the age of the actress playing him.A company of nine (9) female actors rounded out the ensemble.
So, here’s Lear #1, played by Kaysey Ostrom (script track 1.1 through 2.4):

Lear #2, played by Natalie Schmidt (3.1 through 4.6):

Aaand Lear #3, played by Meredith Berlin (4.7 through end):

Because our production was literally dramatizing the physical effects of mental instability, Cassie and I thought it would be conceptually watertight if the Fool was nothing more than a figment of Lear’s diseased imagination. Together, she and I collaborated to alter the script so that the only character who ever addressed the Fool directly was Lear. It was surprisingly easy. With the exception of Kent and Goneril on two fleeting occasions, the only character who shares any kind of rapport with the Fool is Lear himself.
The conceit worked phenomenally well. Sometimes, it was hilarious for the Fool to mercilessly mock characters who could neither see nor hear him. Other times, it was devastating (especially for Kent). And our audiences had no trouble grasping the situation. After all, one of the tell-tale symptoms of schizophrenia is the hallucination of beings who are not actually present. When the Fool committed suicide at the heath, it marked the final snapping of Lear’s hope for survival.
Here are some more photos from the show!

Thanks for the ask! This was a fun trip down memory lane. xx Claire
