2021 Mercedes-Benz E 450 4Matic Cabriolet First Drive
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz E 450 4Matic Cabriolet isn’t scheduled to arrive in America until later this year, but it already looks like a future classic. Sources in Stuttgart have confirmed what Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Nicholas Speeks told American dealers in June: The convertible E-Class will be axed in the next three or four years—along with its coupe cousin and two-door versions of the S- and C-Class—as Daimler moves to trim its current 45-model lineup. The beancounters have looked at the sales trends and concluded the world has fallen out of love with sedan-based convertibles.
The Mercedes-Benz E 450 4Matic Cabriolet shares its 362-hp, 369-lb-ft mild hybrid I-6 powertrain, nine-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel-drive system with the 2021 E 450 4Matic sedan. It also shares the new, more aggressive grille and front bumper that were part of the sedan’s 2021 model year makeover. But that’s all. As a “sporty” Mercedes, the Cabriolet already had the double humps in the hood that are now featured on the sedan. And the Cabriolet’s relatively low sales precluded any major investment in restyling the rear end. Cleverly, the redesigned 2021 E 450 sedan’s elongated taillight graphic now means the two cars look similar from the rear, anyway.
It’s the same story inside. The 2021 E 450 4Matic Cabriolet gets the upgrade to MBUX, with the instrument and infotainment displays on a pair of co-located 12.3-inch touchscreens and the new steering wheel with touch-control buttons on the spokes. But it doesn’t get the new touchpad on the center console as there’s not enough real estate to package it along with the switches to raise and lower the folding soft top.
With the 362-hp, 369-lb-ft turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6 aided and abetted by the 48-volt integrated starter-generator that can deliver up to 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, the E 450 4Matic Cabriolet displays the same silken pace on the road as the E 450 sedan. If anything, it seems even more silken, especially with the roof down; squeeze the gas, and the Cabrio whooshes away with little more than a rustle of wind over the windshield header.
Our tester was fitted with the optional air suspension and 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 245/35 Pirelli P Zero summer tires. Despite the lower-profile rubber, the Cabriolet rode better over the rougher sections of the drive route than the air-sprung sedan we drove earlier in the day (which was on 245/45 Pirelli Cinturato P7 summer tires on 18-inch rims). That’s partly because the soft-top E-Class weighs almost 200 pounds more than the sedan, and partly because the suspension is slightly more softly calibrated to compensate for the lack of a roof.
Even so, the Cabriolet felt remarkably tight in the body and could be hustled quickly through the twisty bits. With the multi-layered soft top raised, it is almost as quiet as a coupe, even at freeway speeds.
Although it’s equipped with the latest-generation Mercedes-Benz safety and infotainment technology, the E 450 4Matic Cabriolet paradoxically drips with a beguiling old-school charm. Back in the ’50s and ’60s, convertibles that would accommodate four (or even more) weren’t uncommon in the U.S.—hell, you could order one from your friendly local Chevy dealer. But in the 21st century a softtop that can genuinely carry four adults in comfort is a rare beast, and the E 450 4Matic Cabriolet is one of the very few.
Mercedes-Benz USA has yet to confirm details, but expect a base price north of $75,000. No, it’s not cheap. But if the rumors of the E-Class Cabrio’s demise are correct, console yourself with the fact that you’re investing in a future classic. Four-seat, softtop Mercedes-Benzes have long been regarded as more desirable than either their coupe or sedan cousins. And the 2021 E 450 4Matic Cabriolet is one of the better ones. We’ll miss it when it’s gone.

2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class grows up
Compared to its predecessor, the new S-Class has grown 34 mm in length, 22 mm in width and 12 mm in height. The wheelbase, too, has been lengthened by 51 mm, which creates 24 mm of added legroom for rear-seat passengers. Boot capacity has also increased by 20 litres to 550 litres.

Today is the day – Mercedes-Benz India is about to follow up the launch of the Maybach GLS 600 ultra-luxury SUV with the introduction of the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Having made its global debut in the second half of 2020, the new-generation S-Class (known internally by its codename V223) is said to be a clear leap over the outgoing model on the technology, comfort and safety fronts. It’s set to be introduced in ‘Launch Edition’ form today, which means a select batch of S-Class units will be launched with select high-end features that may or may not be available on the standard S-Class variants that will follow later.
In its latest generation, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is also more tech-heavy than ever. It features the latest MBUX infotainment system (with up to five OLED screens in the car), rear-axle steering and even a frontal airbag for rear-seat passengers.
Expected to be introduced in S 350 and S 400 d forms today, the new S-Class is likely to get 3.0-litre, six-cylinder petrol and diesel engine options. A plug-in hybrid version (with up to 100 kilometres of electric-only range) is also set to follow. Mercedes-Benz is also likely to bring the new-generation Maybach S-Class to India later this year.

How I’d Spec It: The Perfect 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-class
It took a long time for Mercedes to finally bring its entry-level A-class to the U.S. market—four generations and 22 years, to be exact. It’s fitting perhaps that the first-ever U.S. A-class is the first-ever A-class sedan, and it is offered in front- and all-wheel-drive configurations. For our purposes of building the ideal A-class, I’m starting with the all-wheel-drive A220 4Matic for a sensible $2000 upcharge on the A’s starting price of $33,495. Read on for the rest of my ideal spec for the new entry-level Mercedes.
Exterior Paint: Cosmos Black Metallic and Mountain Gray Metallic are both good fits for a German sedan (either shade costs $720). And before you complain that I pick boring colors for the cars featured in our “How I’d Spec It” series [You do, Marc.—Ed.], there are very few extroverted hues offered on the A220.
Wheels: My choice of interior color and upholstery forces the fitment of the AMG Line package ($2310), which is okay by me. It bumps the wheels from 17 to 18 inches, but I’d go even farther and upgrade to the silver 19-inch AMG wheels for another $500. They’re by far my favorite design of the lot, and they also lose the all-season run-flat tires for conventional performance tires (with a fix-a-flat kit). Due to the non-run-flat tire setup, the ride shouldn’t be too compromised by the shorter sidewalls, but the performance rubber will necessitate keeping a set of winter tires on hand in certain climates.
Interior Seats: The $1450 Titanium Grey/Black leather ($1450) sport seats require ordering seat heaters for $580. I’d add the handy warming feature anyway, so no problem there.
Trim: The longitudinal grain aluminum trim is less contrived than the standard linear grain aluminum trim, and I think it looks great with the leather upholstery. There’s no charge for the change, which is nice.
Options/Packages AMG Line: As noted, it’s $2310. In addition to the wheel upgrade, it also brings an exterior sport-styling package, a lowered Comfort suspension, and interior detail changes.
Premium Package (P1): For $1550, both screens of the all-new MBUX infotainment system are enlarged from 7.0 inches to 10.3, plus you also get proximity entry/ignition and auto-dimming and power-folding side mirrors. Blind Spot Assist ($550) is a forced option with P1.
Multimedia Package: You’d think the Premium package and its $2100 cost (including the compulsory blind-spot assist) would at least provide factory navigation. But full MBUX functionality costs an additional $1150, and along with navigation adds the trick new Augmented Video for Navigation. That feature overlays direction arrows and other information on a video feed from the front-mounted camera. Traffic Sign Assist is included, too. Having to spend a total of $3250 is crazy. At least Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard on the A-class, and we understand owners may be able to purchase and download certain features like navigation as a la carte add-ons in the future.
Exterior Lighting Package: It’s $900 for active LED headlights and auto high beam. I prefer having top-spec illumination for the increased safety it provides.
Etc.: An integrated garage door opener ($280) and SiriusXM ($460) are both important to me—even though they should both be standard. Burmester sound adds $850 and wireless charging is $200. I’d also spec the $850 adaptive dampers, as it should help quell any unforeseen and untoward behaviors the 19-inch wheels might introduce.
What to Skip Sadly, you can’t order the $250 heated steering wheel with the AMG Line bundle, which is a shame. (Mercedes, fix this.) The heated and ventilated seats ($1030) are tempting, as you get ventilation for just $450 more than heat alone, but this build is already high enough and I have to save money somewhere. I’m not a fan of blacked-out trim, so the $300 Night package is a pass. The Parking Assist package ($1090) adds surround view and Active Parking Assistance. I don’t need either. For $2250, the Driver Assistance package adds a plethora of driver-safety technology including radar cruise control with active steering assistance. That’s all stuff more befitting of an S-class, and this car’s wieldy size should make it easy enough for most drivers to keep it undented.
The black 19-inch wheels with the silver lip ($500) are unattractive and require the Night package. I also don’t need 64-color ambient lighting ($310) or a head-up display ($990). The additional adjustability of the $510 multicontour seats can only be added to the base MB-Tex (vinyl) black or beige “comfort” seats, so it’s out. I’d also pass on rear side airbags ($420 plus a $250 special-order charge), as well as a large list of accessories including the illuminated Mercedes star in the grill, illuminated doorsills, and LED logo projectors mainly because they’re all pretty tacky. And there’s a load of carbon-fiber-look exterior details that will just make the driver look like they’re trying too hard.
Total Cost: $47,845 (A220 base price, $33,495; A220 4Matic base price: $35,495) That’s quite a lot, especially for a small, 188-hp sedan. But the build does carry a load of tech and features, and if I’m buying a Mercedes I want it to feel like one, entry-level model or no.

I’m not a fan of blacked-out trim, so the $300 Night package is a pass. The Parking Assist package ($1090) adds surround view and Active Parking Assistance. I don’t need either. For $2250, the Driver Assistance package adds a plethora of driver-safety technology including radar cruise control with active steering assistance. That’s all stuff more befitting of an S-class, and this car’s wieldy size should make it easy enough for most drivers to keep it undented.
The black 19-inch wheels with the silver lip ($500) are unattractive and require the Night package. I also don’t need 64-color ambient lighting ($310) or a head-up display ($990). The additional adjustability of the $510 multicontour seats can only be added to the base MB-Tex (vinyl) black or beige “comfort” seats, so it’s out. I’d also pass on rear side airbags ($420 plus a $250 special-order charge), as well as a large list of accessories including the illuminated Mercedes star in the grill, illuminated doorsills, and LED logo projectors mainly because they’re all pretty tacky. And there’s a load of carbon-fiber-look exterior details that will just make the driver look like they’re trying too hard.
Total Cost: $47,845 (A220 base price, $33,495; A220 4Matic base price: $35,495) That’s quite a lot, especially for a small, 188-hp sedan. But the build does carry a load of tech and features, and if I’m buying a Mercedes I want it to feel like one, entry-level model or no.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic a Good Road Trip Car?
Mercedes-Benz dropped off the long-term GLE 450 4Matic in early April, right as the shutdown from the global pandemic was getting underway. There was nowhere to go, and as such by the end of May, the poor, underused Mercedes family hauler had only 1,984 miles on it. An ominous mileage total if there ever was one, as well as one that’s way lower than I’d like to see on the odometer. Solution? Grab a startlingly inexpensive Airbnb just outside of Colorado City, Arizona, (Warren Jeffs country!) just south of the Utah border. Then toss the wife and 3-year-old in the Benz and hit the road for a 2,000-mile road trip, hitting the following breathtaking locales: Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, Pink Coral Sand Dunes State Park, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Space
If you were to visit your local Mercedes-Benz dealer and test-drive a GLE against the slightly smaller GLC, you might question why you’d need to spend the extra scrilla for the former. Yes, the GLE is bigger, but both are two-row SUVs that can be had with similar levels or power and luxury. Well, imagine your 5-foot-8 wife being able to sit comfortably without the abnormally tall, bored kiddo in the second row being able to reach, let alone kick, the back of her seat. The $11,750 price difference between the two (base price vs. base price) might best be explained in terms of the extra 4.8 inches of wheelbase. Although we (probably) brought too much stuff with us for a weeklong sojourn (you don’t hit the road with a 160-gallon kiddie pool?), the GLE had more than enough space in the back with both rear seats up.
Comfort
Speaking of our kid, in some vehicles he gets carsick. Usually this is prefaced by the words, “It’s too bumpity,” and then comes the vomit. Usually as I’m pulling over on the side of the freeway/on our poor Audi. I’m happy to report that the optional $8,200 E-Active Body Control, which is a blend of air springs and 48-volt hydraulic dampers, is so smooth that he only complained of one belly ache on the entire trip, and that was after a questionable quesadilla. I mostly left the suspension in Comfort, but on more winding sections I’d slip it into Curve, the mode that uses the GLE’s built-in cameras to look at the road ahead and then level the vehicle accordingly as you drive around a corner. I did use Sport from time to time, but only in passing situations. Off Road mode, too, but only for bouncing the GLE up and down in the Airbnb’s driveway. Because I can.
Excellent Seats
Let’s spend a paragraph on the front seats, shall we? Heated and cooled and—essential for serious road tripping—massaging. Activating such a key feature could be easier, though. The longer I use Mercedes’ new MBUX infotainment, the more I like its deep, rich functionality. That out of the way, MBUX still hides stuff a layer or three deeper than I’d like. One way around this complexity is gesture control, just like BMW offers on certain models. Rather than digging through four steps to get a massage, I rigged it so that when you stab at the screen with two fingers (like Moe poking Curly in the eyes) the massaging function turns on. I believe out of the 50 or so times I tried this gesture on our trip, it worked twice. My wife’s level of success? Zero. She literally got it to work no times at all. That’s very poor. Sure, you can use the built-in “Hey, Mercedes” voice recognition, but that’s slow, takes too many steps, never actually works the way I want it to, and feels like I’m fighting with my bank. Through the big touchscreen we go.
Let’s make that two paragraphs about the seats. The actual best part of the GLE 450’s seats is Seat Kinetics. What’s that? It’s this excellent little feature that ever so slightly moves your seat every few minutes. A degree of recline, a squeeze of the bolsters, a tiny slide forward, then back—you stop noticing it’s even happening after a bit, especially when combined with massage. The effect, however, is that your body is physically moved every couple of miles, and the result is wonderful. You just don’t feel as cramped, tight, achy, stiff, and beaten as you normally do when you emerge from a several-hundred-mile drive. I cannot recommend Seat Kinetics highly enough.
Weak A/C
Mercedes has to make its air conditioning stronger. I’ll preface this by saying I’ve been in meetings in 85-degree rooms where all Americans present are half-stripping and keeling over half-dead while the Germans in the room, dressed smartly in suits, ties, and sweater vests, are not even breaking a sweat. Whenever I mention to meine Deutschen Kollegen that their cars need stronger A/C systems, they tell me that Germans hate cold air blowing in their faces while silently thinking all Americans are fat and crazy. That out of the way, because the GLE 450 has MB’s 3.0-liter inline-six with that 48-volt system, all the accessories are electric. Including the A/C compressor. Add in an all-glass, panoramic roof getting thermally cooked up at 8,000 feet in the American Southwest, and it’s a recipe for way too hot. I think opting your way into the GLE 580 just for the belt-driven air conditioning might be the way to go for those of us in hot climates.
Road Trip Verdict
Overall, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic rocked on our family road trip. Summarizing the bad bits, some of the frequently used functions are too buried, the A/C is too weak, and the feature that automatically hits the brakes when you have the smart cruise control on and you enter a new speed limit needs to be fired into the sun. Various people have told me this “feature” is called Route-Based Speed Adaptation, but I’ve turned it off dozens of times—it’s something else, and I hate it. Also, I’d like another 100 horsepower.
Good stuff? The 24-gallon gas tank and the built-in hybrid system mean you’re not stopping for gas as frequently as other 5,438-pound SUVs going 85 mph will have to. Most important, this Benz is quiet, quite comfortable, and fun enough to drive for long stretches at a time. So much so that I look forward to the next family road trip.

How I’d Spec It: The Perfect 2019 Mercedes-Benz A-class
It took a long time for Mercedes to finally bring its entry-level A-class to the U.S. market—four generations and 22 years, to be exact. It’s fitting perhaps that the first-ever U.S. A-class is the first-ever A-class sedan, and it is offered in front- and all-wheel-drive configurations. For our purposes of building the ideal A-class, I’m starting with the all-wheel-drive A220 4Matic for a sensible $2000 upcharge on the A’s starting price of $33,495. Read on for the rest of my ideal spec for the new entry-level Mercedes.
Exterior Paint: Cosmos Black Metallic and Mountain Gray Metallic are both good fits for a German sedan (either shade costs $720). And before you complain that I pick boring colors for the cars featured in our “How I’d Spec It” series [You do, Marc.—Ed.], there are very few extroverted hues offered on the A220.
Wheels: My choice of interior color and upholstery forces the fitment of the AMG Line package ($2310), which is okay by me. It bumps the wheels from 17 to 18 inches, but I’d go even farther and upgrade to the silver 19-inch AMG wheels for another $500. They’re by far my favorite design of the lot, and they also lose the all-season run-flat tires for conventional performance tires (with a fix-a-flat kit). Due to the non-run-flat tire setup, the ride shouldn’t be too compromised by the shorter sidewalls, but the performance rubber will necessitate keeping a set of winter tires on hand in certain climates.
Interior Seats: The $1450 Titanium Grey/Black leather ($1450) sport seats require ordering seat heaters for $580. I’d add the handy warming feature anyway, so no problem there.
Trim: The longitudinal grain aluminum trim is less contrived than the standard linear grain aluminum trim, and I think it looks great with the leather upholstery. There’s no charge for the change, which is nice.
Options/Packages AMG Line: As noted, it’s $2310. In addition to the wheel upgrade, it also brings an exterior sport-styling package, a lowered Comfort suspension, and interior detail changes.
Premium Package (P1): For $1550, both screens of the all-new MBUX infotainment system are enlarged from 7.0 inches to 10.3, plus you also get proximity entry/ignition and auto-dimming and power-folding side mirrors. Blind Spot Assist ($550) is a forced option with P1.
Multimedia Package: You’d think the Premium package and its $2100 cost (including the compulsory blind-spot assist) would at least provide factory navigation. But full MBUX functionality costs an additional $1150, and along with navigation adds the trick new Augmented Video for Navigation. That feature overlays direction arrows and other information on a video feed from the front-mounted camera. Traffic Sign Assist is included, too. Having to spend a total of $3250 is crazy. At least Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard on the A-class, and we understand owners may be able to purchase and download certain features like navigation as a la carte add-ons in the future.
Exterior Lighting Package: It’s $900 for active LED headlights and auto high beam. I prefer having top-spec illumination for the increased safety it provides.
Etc.: An integrated garage door opener ($280) and SiriusXM ($460) are both important to me—even though they should both be standard. Burmester sound adds $850 and wireless charging is $200. I’d also spec the $850 adaptive dampers, as it should help quell any unforeseen and untoward behaviors the 19-inch wheels might introduce.
What to Skip Sadly, you can’t order the $250 heated steering wheel with the AMG Line bundle, which is a shame. (Mercedes, fix this.) The heated and ventilated seats ($1030) are tempting, as you get ventilation for just $450 more than heat alone, but this build is already high enough and I have to save money somewhere. 2019 BMW X5 xDrive40i First Test: Catch My Tail
A staffer who recently spent time in the 2019 BMW X5 sent me the following Slack message: “I love the tailgate. Love it!” Pro tip for new parents: Apparently it’s great for changing diapers. That rear hatch and tailgate combo is relatively rare (check out Land Cruiser and Land Rover Discovery), though it’s been around since the X5’s birth two decades ago. Standing out is a good thing in the super crowded luxury crossover segment. But does the fourth-generation X5 stand out in any other way?
How about being quicker than its peers? With a stronger 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline-six making 335 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque (35 hp and 30 lb-ft more than the outgoing model), the new X5 launches from 0 to 60 in just 5 seconds flat. It barely beats the new 2019 Porsche Cayenne we recently tested by a tenth of a second. Both reach the quarter mile in 13.7 seconds at about 100 mph. Quite impressive, especially considering that the BMW tipped our scales at 4,854 pounds, which is 178 pounds heavier than the Porsche (which coincidentally churns out similar power from its single-turbo V-6 rated at 335 hp and 332 lb-ft).
And not only is the X5 quicker than the Audi Q7 3.0T and the 2017 Jaguar F-Pace S, but it ties SQ5 to 60 mph. The last two are lighter and more powerful. We’re eagerly waiting for the chance to test the new Mercedes-Benz GLE.
The X5’s “power feels quite linear,” road test editor Chris Walton noted. “Quick, fast, and very consistent.” He also praised the eight-speed for super quick shifts. That gearbox has been revised with new gearing, including a shorter first gear.
The BMW’s weight is likely the main culprit for its 60–0 mph stopping distance of 119 feet, which is a few feet more than both Audis and the Jag. The Porsche is the overachiever in this group, coming to a halt in an astounding 105 feet. We should point out that our test car is among a small group of early-build “xLine” trim units fitted with optional M Sport brakes that include lighter aluminum calipers (four pistons for the fronts, two pistons for the rears) and larger rotors (15.6 inches up front and 14.6 inches at the rear). BMW has since made those brakes exclusive to the M Sport package ($5,850), which includes adaptive dampers and a long list of creature comforts.
Despite not having the full stockpile of M Sport ammo, the X5 completed a respectable figure-eight lap in 25.8 seconds—eight tenths behind the lighter Cayenne with wider and stickier tires. “You’re constantly reminded that this thing is ‘taut’,” testing director Kim Reynolds noted. “Very easy to turn in and have the tail rotate too much.”
Fun stuff, but most customers will likely focus less on its tail-happy nature and more on its taut handling. Our tester was equipped with the optional air suspension ($1,000) that adjusts ride height based on speed, drive mode, and a switch on the center console. The overall ride is smooth and controlled, and we found that the suspension handled highways and L.A.’s potholes quite well. Road and wind noise is minimal, but acoustic glass is also available ($3,000) for those who desire an even quieter cabin.
After the X5 impressed the test crew, it worked its magic with our MPG team, as well. The EPA rates the 2019 X5 xDrive40i at 20/26/22 mpg city/highway/combined, but its EQUA Real MPG figures came in at 23.2/28.2/25.2 mpg. We have yet to MPG test the Cayenne or 2020 Mercedes GLE 450 4Matic, but the BMW’s EPA ratings are higher than both. A 2020 X5 xDrive45e plug-in hybrid is due soon for those looking to further decrease their carbon footprint, and there’s still no decision on a diesel powertrain for the U.S.
The 2019 X5 starts at $61,695 and can easily get pricey. Our X5’s as-tested price totaled $73,980 thanks to three packages and a handful of à la carte options. Our First Look and First Drive reviews thoroughly cover the X5’s long list of new technology (and its new off-road package), including the next-gen iDrive infotainment system that now features touchscreen capability and improved layout. BMW’s Gesture Control, which allows you to control some infotainment functions by moving your hand in front of the screen, seems better, but it still needs more tweaking; holding your phone close to the dashboard, for example, inadvertently activates the system. Wireless Apple CarPlay is fantastic, but it was a buggy, occasionally disconnecting from my phone and freezing apps like Spotify. Could it be an issue with my month-old iPhone XR? Maybe. But hopefully BMW and Apple can figure it out. Another gripe? The optional running boards. They hit the mark on looks but are a functional nuisance. Many passengers found themselves rubbing their legs or pants against the boards while exiting. We’d skip those.
These small gripes don’t overshadow the X5’s decent handling, sharp interior, and comfortable ride. That the Porsche, Audi, and Jag will struggle to catch its tailgate is a nice surprise.

The monumental performance is kept in check by four-wheel drive and a host of safety devices, while cylinder deactivation makes it surprisingly efficient. Opt for the S model, engage Drift mode and you’ll think you’re driving a naturally aspirated, rear-wheel-drive AMG. A super-saloon in every sense. 14 Sep, 2017 4.5 The new E-Class is deceptively attractive, looking every inch the junior S-Class, which will appeal to buyers of premium executive cars. The AMG is suitably discreet, almost stealth-like in its appearance. Note the V8 Biturbo 4Matic+ badge on the front wings, the sculpted bonnet and colour-coded lip spoiler on the boot. More obvious changes include the flared wheel arches, AMG-specific grille and bumpers, and four trapezoidal tailpipes.  The interior has superb fit and finish, with AMG lettering on the the centre console and AMG start-up logo in the central screen to let you know you’ve climbed aboard the range flagship. The AMG sports seats are delightfully supportive and supremely comfortable, but the ‘performance’ seats in the S model offer even more lateral support. All models get a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel and a 12.3-inch display with AMG-style displays and a racetimer. You’ll be in no doubt that you’re in a Mercedes-AMG, but it’s not too OTT.  Sat-nav, stereo and infotainment  The infotainment system is a familiar Mercedes-Benz system, with a few AMG trinkets thrown in for good measure. These include different instruments and performance-focused information, such as g-force and gearbox temperature. Opt for the S model and you can enjoy the AMG Track Pace system, enabling lap/sector times and videos to be recorded and analysed. This is available on Apple iPhone via an app downloaded from the App Store. Image 3 of 17 Image 3 of 17 5 Cutting to the chase: this might be one of the best all-round performance cars in the world. There’s a sense that AMG has garnered all its experience of the past 50 years to create a thoroughly modern interpretation of a V8 four-door saloon. In range-topping S guise, as tested here, the E 63 offers explosive, almost fearsome pace – arguably too much for Britain’s tight and congested roads – and yet it can tip-toe back from behaving badly on a B-road and nobody will bat an eyelid.  For the first time in the UK, the E 63 is underpinned by Mercedes’ 4Matic+ four-wheel drive system, which continuously adjusts torque to the axle as required. But any fears that the 4Matic+ might be as welcome as a wasp at a picnic are soon forgotten in the E 63 S. Select Race mode, kill the traction control and pull the shift paddles towards you and Drift mode is engaged. All of a sudden the nine-speed automatic transmission stops being automatic, putting you in charge of the gear changes and removing the ESP safety net. Talent, space, nerves of steel and a budget for new tyres is required, but far from being a gimmick, Drift mode proves that a big German saloon can let its hair down once in a while.  This truly is a performance car for all seasons and every occasion. There’s a variety of driving modes – Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Race and Individual – each one tweaking the engine mapping, suspension, gearbox shift speeds, the response of the differential and ESP, and even the exhaust note. Image 5 of 17 Image 5 of 17 In our view, the Sport setting provides the optimum experience, with the stiffer suspension delivering a degree of tautness to the body control. The way in which this two-tonne saloon changes direction and devours corners is simply breathtaking. But our biggest compliment is this: when you’re truly on it, the E 63 feels like a naturally aspirated, rear-wheel-drive AMG of yesteryear. It’s a digital remaster of a classic album; it truly is that good.  Engines In ‘standard’ guise, the E 63 AMG’s 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine produces 563bhp and 750Nm of torque, enabling it to sprint to 62mph in 3.5 seconds, before hitting a top speed limited to 155mph. By the E 63 S is the true powerhouse and is likely to be the most popular model. It delivers 604bhp and a colossal 850Nm of torque, taking the sprint time down to 3.4 seconds. The top speed is limited to 155mph, but in both cases an optional AMG Driver’s Package (£765) will unlock a top speed of 186mph. The engine is so much more than a tweaked version of the motor found in the C 63 S. Twin-scroll turbochargers are used for the first time, the pistons are new and the air intake and charge air cooler have been optimised - and that’s all before AMG set to work with the engine software. The nine-speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission has been mated to a wet start-off clutch, which replaces a torque converter to save weight and improve response times. The result: lightning-quick and seamless up and down changes.  Image 14 of 17 Image 14 of 17 4.5 The E 63 shares all of the active and passive safety systems with the regular E-Class, making it one of the safest performance cars you can buy. Active braking assist, multiple airbags, attention assist, emergency braking and a tyre pressure monitoring system are just some of the standard features. For the ultimate protection, a Driving Assistance Plus Package is available for £1,695, which, in short, will do everything it can to keep you on the straight and narrow. Active braking, steering and lane keeping are included, along with preventative measures in the event of a side or rear collision. Image 17 of 17 Image 17 of 17 The E-Class was awarded a maximum five-star safety rating by Euro NCAP, scoring 95 per cent for adult occupants, 90 per cent for child occupants, 77 per cent for pedestrian safety and 62 per cent for safety assist technologies. Mercedes-Benz didn’t perform quite so well in our most recent Driver Power Survey, finishing 21st out of 27 on the list of best manufacturers. A score of 88.92 percent meant that only Renault, Vauxhall, Land Rover, MG, Citroen and Dacia finished below the German marque. Warranty The Mercedes-AMG E 63 comes with a three-year unlimited-mileage warranty and up to 30 years of anti-corrosion cover. Servicing Mercedes-AMG offers a Service Car package, allowing you to spread the cost of servicing a new car. On E63 models, the price works out at £45 per month, based on two services taken over 24 months or three services over 36 months. Other options are available. 4 The E 63 is a proper practical performance car, with space for five adults, even if the transmission tunnel restricts room in the middle back seat. The AMG front sports seats – upgraded to ‘performance’ seats in the S – are supremely comfortable on long journeys.  Size At 4,988mm in length, 1,463mm height and 1,907mm width (excluding door mirrors), the E 63 is slightly longer, taller and wider than the standard E-Class saloon, reflecting its beefier and pumped-up stance.  Leg room, head room & passenger space Legroom is excellent, while the roofline ensures that adults will find plenty of headroom in the back. That said, the rear bench is best reserved for two adults, as three abreast is a bit of squeeze. The transmission tunnel also impacts on legroom for the central rear passenger.  Image 12 of 17 Image 12 of 17 Boot With 540 litres of luggage capacity, the E 63 saloon offers the largest boot in its class, on a par with the Jaguar XE and 10 litres more than the BMW 5 Series and A6. It’s well shaped and offers excellent access for a saloon car. First Drive: 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE Class
SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Brands like Automobile cater to enthusiasts like you, but enthusiasts have families, and those people need to drive, too. Chances are they care less about cornering grip or steering feel than you do; they just want something roomy and comfortable and reliable. But you care.
So we have some good news for you, loyal readers: The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE is a crossover that you and your family can live with.
The new GLE is about as complex as the Talmud, and there are close to a billion things we need to tell you about it, but here’s the CliffsNotes version first: As mid-size luxury SUVs go, this is about as good as it gets. The GLE is roomy and comfortable, chic and upscale, and reasonably rewarding to drive. It’s a techno-geek’s dream, with options ranging from an active suspension that can bounce the GLE free if it gets stuck to a voice assistant that will explain naughty sex terms (more on that in a tick). And while pricing hadn’t been announced at the time of our early test drive, we expect it won’t be too expensive if you lay off the options, and there’s good reason to do just that.
So let’s dive right in: The GLE is all-new for 2020, with updated styling inside and out, new powertrains, and a host of new technology. The sheetmetal has been updated to look more like the bigger GLS, though it retains the sharp-looking body-color C-pillar from the old-shape GLE. The new version looks bigger because it is bigger, with a 3.1-inch wheelbase stretch to provide more back seat room. We’re very happy with the styling changes; the old GLE looked a bit milquetoast, the new one has some much-needed presence.
The changes to the interior are even more radical. The instrument and infotainment panel setup, versions of which Mercedes has been rolling out to newer models like the E- and A -Class, comprises of two side-by-side widescreen displays that are designed to look like a stand-alone panel. But the integration into the GLE’s dashboard is much smoother and its styling is markedly different—and better, if you ask us. Materials quality is top-notch; there’s no cost-cutting here. Everything you touch feels expensive.
Open a back door and you’ll be struck by the amount of rear-seat legroom. Unfortunately, it’s something of an illusion. Mercedes has cut the rear-seat cushion short, which makes the back seat look more spacious than it actually is. Back-seat legroom is good—not spectacular, just good—but we’d happily trade the appearance of space for more thigh support. The GLE now offers an optional third-row seat, and while we didn’t get a chance to sample it, from the space allotted we guess it’s a kids-only affair. Configured as a five-seater, though, the GLE has a lot of cargo space as befits a family truckster.
We sampled both of the new-to-the-GLE engines. The GLE 350 gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged four that produces 255 horsepower. One of the things we expect from an upscale SUV is strong acceleration, and the 2.0T makes the cut, but just barely. If the GLE weighed say 250 pounds more, the engine would be overtaxed. The GLE 450’s turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six, with 362 hp on tap and a 48-volt “mild hybrid” system that adds a short 21-horsepower boost, delivers a more suitable pace, though it’s hardly an adrenaline-generator. (We’ll wait on the inevitable AMG versions to provide that.) Both engines utilize a new nine-speed automatic transmission, and 4Matic all-wheel-drive is standard with the six-cylinder powertrains and optional with the four. Beware, Rust Belters: Base-model GLE 350s are rear-wheel drive.
The GLE can be had with three suspensions. The first GLE 350 we sampled had good ol’ steel springs, which provide a nice balance: The ride is firmer than we expected (a nod, we assume, to BMW drivers who find traditional Mercedes SUVs too softly sprung) but nowhere near punishing. Grip was impressive and likely aided by the wider tires fitted to our test cars. In the curves, the steel-sprung GLE 350 we drove felt more responsive and eager than Mercedes SUVs of yore, though calling it fun-to-drive might be stretching the truth.
Next, we drove a GLE 450 with the Airmatic suspension, which reminded us of why we’re so fond of air springs. The ride is glass-smooth with excellent body control in the curves. It’s the perfect setup that should please enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike.
New for the 2020 GLE is the E-Active air suspension, which has a bunch of cool tricks up its sleeve. Mercedes showed off E-Active with a demonstration of a GLE dancing to a techno-beat. There’s a mode that allows you to individually raise and lower each corner using the center touchscreen, and the response is surprisingly quick. If the GLE gets stuck in deep snow or sand—maybe you made a wrong turn at the golf course and wound up in a sand trap—E-Active can literally bounce the car up and down to get it free. (If you’re thinking of the last low rider show you attended, yep, it works like that.) And then there’s Curve mode: Turn it on, and rather than keep the body flat, the GLE can actually lean into curves like a motorcycle.
That said, for all the things E-Active can do, we’re not sure it’s worth the upcharge (which, though not announced, is sure to be steep), especially considering how well plain ol’ Airmatic works. Of course, we drove the GLE on fairly smooth pavement outside of San Antonio. Driving a GLE on the curvy roads north of Los Angeles or the lunar surface of Detroit might change our minds.
Also new is a voice-response system similar to Siri or Alexa with “Hey Mercedes” as the wake-word. (Discussing the merits of the car caused it to continually interrupt our conversations.) The system is connected to the internet, which is a mixed blessing. Ask it to find the closest sushi joint or post office, and it will. But, as several of our colleagues attending the press preview with us discovered, if you ask it to describe, say, a particular sexual position, it will eagerly provide a detailed and stunningly accurate explanation. (No, it wasn’t us who tried this, and frankly we’re a little ashamed we didn’t think of it first.) We imagine Mercedes reviewed the list of searches that evening, because the feature was mysteriously disabled on all of the cars the next day. Parents of small children might want to consider doing the same.
The vehicles we drove had traffic-sign recognition, with an adaptive cruise control system that automatically adjusts to posted speed limits. If you’re adaptively cruising along on a 55 mph road and pass a sign that says 45 mph, the GLE slows down. We can’t decide if this is awesome or annoying. It’s annoying if you like to drive 5 or 8 mph above the limit, but awesome if you’re on a two-laner and don’t notice that the speed limit has suddenly dropped from 55 to 25—the GLE might save you from a speeding ticket.
Our day-and-a-half test drive (rather long by press-junket standards) meant we were able to try out a lot of the GLE’s new tech—but we also gained enough familiarity to breed a little contempt. Some examples of the annoyances: The GLE’s optional full-color head-up display, which Mercedes happily touts as the industry’s largest, is so big that it gets distracting. The rectangular instrument panel displays are so big and so rectangular that information at the corners is blocked by the steering wheel. And in the 32-year history of this magazine, we can’t recall testing a vehicle in which it was more difficult to adjust seat lumbar. (The adjustment is buried in the touchscreen menu system. Why not just put a button on the seat?)
None of this precludes a recommendation to buy the GLE. While it may not be quite as sporty as the BMW X5 or as user-friendly as the Audi Q5, it’s a fantastic vehicle nonetheless, one that is luxurious, spacious, and well-engineered. We’d recommend forgoing some of the higher-end high-tech gadgets; they’re fun for showing off but complicate life with the car, which may please you but is bound to grind on the nerves of your significant other.
