It was a cold afternoon on November 13, 2019, when Myah, nicknamed Robin, arrived five minutes late to the small rehearsal studio where the rest of the band was waiting. As she quickened her pace, Wonbin was setting up the microphones, Eric was grabbing the amplifiers stored in a corner, and Giselle was adjusting her old drum set to ensure it sounded perfect and flawless.

Meraki was about to debut, thanks to a small company that saw them perform at a summer festival, just when Sohn joined the band. However, the four young musicians would have to handle everything themselves, excluding the music video, until they gained some popularity. Today was the day they had to record the demo for their debut song, "Happy Death Day," which they had performed at the mentioned festival along with five other songs.

Robin arrived at the small rehearsal studio with her cheeks flushed from the cold and her heart racing more from excitement than from hurry. She apologized with a rushed smile as she hung up her coat and hurried to join her bandmates. The atmosphere in the room was one of anticipation and nervous energy. Today was not an ordinary day; they were about to record the demo for "Happy Death Day," the song they hoped would propel them to the next level.

“Sorry, sorry,” Robin said with a light laugh as she walked toward the microphone that Wonbin had finished adjusting. He returned her smile with a carefree gesture.

“Don’t worry, we’re almost ready,” he replied, checking the final connections. “We just need your magic on the mic.”

Robin gave her cousin a knowing glance, with whom she shared an almost telepathic connection when it came to music. As she prepared for the first take, her eyes scanned the room. Eric was finishing up adjusting the amplifier with his usual concentration, while Giselle tapped the drums gently, fine-tuning the final details.

“This is our moment, guys,” Robin said, taking the microphone with both hands. Her voice, though calm, carried a weight of determination that filled the room. “We’ve worked so hard to get here, and now that it’s within reach, we won’t let it slip away.”

“Let’s make this sound brutal,” added Eric with a confident smile, lifting his bass onto his shoulder. “I can’t wait to see how people react when they hear this.”

Giselle nodded from behind her drums, her expression serious but excited.

“It’s going to be perfect,” she said, raising a drumstick in encouragement. “As if it’s the last time we play together.”

The mention of “the last time” caused everyone to exchange significant glances, knowing they were facing a pivotal moment. Robin took a deep breath, absorbing the enthusiasm that vibrated in the air. It felt as if all the energy accumulated from their efforts was about to explode in a wave of sound.

“Are you ready?” she asked, looking at each of them.

“Ready,” replied Wonbin, adjusting his guitar.

“Ready,” said Giselle, gently tapping the cymbals.

“I’m ready too,” added Eric, playing a small bass riff to warm up.

Robin closed her eyes for a moment, letting the music fill her mind before they even began. Despite the challenges and long hours of practice, she had never felt such a strong connection to something as she did with Meraki. This was her dream, but she wasn’t alone in it; she shared it with these three people who had become her family.

The first chord resonated in the room, filling the space with a mix of power and rebellion. Wonbin’s guitar led the charge, closely followed by Eric’s bass, which marked the rhythm with perfect precision. Giselle came in with the drums, creating a solid foundation for Robin’s voice to soar like a storm.

Robin approached the microphone, her fingers brushing against the cold metal as her voice emerged with an intensity that seemed to come from deep within her being. Every word of “Happy Death Day” carried the weight of her experiences, sleepless nights, and internal struggles channeled into this song.

As she sang, Robin felt a familiar gaze on her. She turned her head slightly and saw Hyunjae standing at the studio door, watching her with a mix of pride and admiration. He raised a hand in a silent greeting, and Robin smiled back, feeling a warmth that contrasted with the cold of the afternoon.

The connection between them was palpable, like an invisible current binding them despite the physical distance. Robin had shared every step of this journey with Hyunjae, and although he wasn’t in the band, his support had been crucial in getting her here.

The song continued, and Robin gave herself entirely to the music. Every note, every word resonated in the walls of the small studio like an echo of their hopes and dreams. When the last note faded, the room fell into an expectant silence. Robin opened her eyes, finding her bandmates looking at her with triumphant smiles.

“We did it,” Giselle whispered, barely containing her emotion.

“And we did it well,” added Eric, with a satisfied smile.

Robin nodded, feeling a wave of relief and happiness.

“This is just the beginning,” she said, addressing everyone but with a special glance toward Hyunjae, who was still standing in the doorway, casually leaning against the frame. The filmmaker smiled back, his gaze warm and full of love.

“I’m so proud of you, Myah,” Hyunjae said, his voice soft but filled with sincerity. “I knew you’d do something amazing, but this... this is more than I imagined.”

Robin felt a lump of emotion in her throat. She stepped away from the microphone and approached him, not caring that the rest of the band was watching. When she reached his side, Hyunjae embraced her tenderly, wrapping her in warmth that made her forget the cold outside.

“Thank you for being here,” Robin murmured against his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart. “I couldn’t have done it without you.”

Hyunjae gently stroked her hair, tilting his head to kiss the top of hers.

“I’ll always be here for you,” he replied, with a conviction that seemed etched in his voice.

At that moment, everything seemed to fall into place. The music, the love, the future opening up before them. Robin felt a deep certainty that, no matter what came next, as long as she had Meraki and Hyunjae by her side, she could face anything.

The music stopped, leaving the studio in a silence charged with anticipation. For a few seconds, no one said anything, as if everyone wanted to prolong the echo of the last note still resonating in their minds. Robin, still with her heart racing, looked at her bandmates, seeing in their eyes the same sparkle she felt in her own. They knew they had created something special.

“Shall we listen to how it turned out?” Wonbin asked, breaking the silence with a mix of excitement and nervousness.

“Definitely,” Eric replied, already moving towards the computer where they had been recording the demo. With a few clicks, he started playing back what they had just created.

The studio was once again filled with the sound of "Happy Death Day," but this time from the speakers, the recorded version of their collective effort. Each of them remained in their place, listening intently, searching for any imperfections but also enjoying the result of weeks of work.

Robin closed her eyes and let her recorded voice envelop her. The song sounded raw, authentic, with an energy that vibrated in the air. Giselle maintained the rhythm with her precise drumming, Eric’s bass added a resonant depth, and Wonbin’s guitar wove everything together with an enveloping melody. Robin could feel the connection they had achieved, not only between them as musicians but also with the music itself.

“It’s… incredible,” Giselle said when the song ended, her voice low but filled with emotion. “I feel like we’ve really captured something special here.”

“We did,” Eric agreed, still with his fingers on the computer keys, his gaze fixed on the screen. “I think this demo is exactly what we wanted.”

“Yes, but let’s not get too excited until the boss gives the final approval,” Wonbin said, always the most pragmatic of the group. Though his words were cautious, his smile showed that he was also satisfied with the result.

Robin nodded, knowing Wonbin was right. They had done a great job, but the next step was crucial. They needed to send the demo to their manager, who would pass it on to the CEO of the small company that had believed in them from the start. Hopefully, it would be the key to opening the door for them to record the final version in a professional studio and eventually film the music video.

“Eric, can you send the demo?” Robin asked, trusting her teammate’s tech skills.

“I’m on it,” Eric replied, with a few quick clicks as he prepared the file. “I’m just compressing the audio a bit to make it easier to transfer.”

Robin watched as Eric skillfully handled the computer, while she herself felt a mix of nerves and excitement growing inside her. This was one of those moments when the reality of what they were doing really hit her. They were one step away from debuting with a song they had created from scratch.

After a few minutes, Eric finally clicked “Send,” and the file began its digital journey to their manager. There was a tense silence as everyone watched the progress bar, as if they could somehow speed up the process with the power of their will.

“Here it goes,” Eric said when the transfer was complete. “Now we just have to wait.”

Robin let out a sigh she hadn’t realized she was holding. She leaned back in one of the chairs, feeling the adrenaline start to dissipate.

“I think this calls for a little celebration,” Giselle said, breaking the tension with a smile. “How about we order something to eat? Something to keep morale high while we wait.”

“Definitely,” Wonbin agreed, already pulling out his phone to look for food options. “We’ve earned it.”

As Giselle and Wonbin discussed what to order, Robin got up and walked over to the small studio’s window. Outside, night had fallen, and the city lights shone in the distance. It was a quiet, almost intimate moment, contrasting with the intensity of the day.

“We did well, Robin,” Eric said, approaching her after finishing sending the demo. “This is just the beginning.”

Robin nodded, keeping her gaze on the city lights.

“Yes, but it’s a great start.” She then turned to Eric with a smile. “Thank you for being here, for being part of this. I couldn’t imagine doing it without you.”

Eric smiled, putting an arm around Robin’s shoulders in a brotherly gesture.

“We’re a band, Robin. We’ll do this together, no matter what comes next.”

Just then, Robin’s phone vibrated in her pocket. She quickly took it out and saw a message from their manager.

“Received. I’m reviewing it now. I’ll let you know when I have news from the CEO.”

Robin read the message aloud to the others, who nodded in understanding. Although the CEO’s response would determine the next step, everyone knew they had done everything possible.

“Alright, let’s wait,” Wonbin said, putting away his phone after placing the order. “But in the meantime, does anyone want to practice something else? Maybe we can start brainstorming ideas for the music video.”

“We could do that,” Giselle replied, picking up her drumsticks. “I have a few wild ideas in mind.”

“Me too,” Robin added, feeling creativity start to flow again now that the first big task was done. “Something visually striking, but with a touch that’s distinctly ours.”

They spent the rest of the night discussing ideas, laughing, and playing a bit more. Although the initial tension had eased, the excitement was still present, fueled by the anticipation of what was to come. When the food arrived, they sat on the studio floor, sharing a moment of camaraderie that, though humble, carried the weight of a promising future.

Finally, close to midnight, Robin received another notification. It was from their manager, and this time the news was good.

“The CEO loved the demo. Let’s get ready to record the studio version and coordinate the music video. This is going to happen, guys.”

Robin couldn’t help but smile as she read the message, and her bandmates, seeing her expression, knew immediately what it meant.

“We’re going to debut,” Robin said, excitement bubbling in her voice.

“We’re going to debut!” Eric repeated, raising his drink as if making an impromptu toast.

“And we’ll do it our way,” Giselle added, with a smile of pure happiness.

“For Meraki,” Wonbin said, raising his glass as well. “And for everything that’s to come.”

The night continued with renewed energy, full of plans, dreams, and the certainty that they were about to embark on something incredible. Although the road ahead would be long and likely filled with challenges, at that moment, they felt invincible. United by music, the love for what they did, and the confidence that, together, they could achieve anything.

Love Your Voice 2025: A Transformative Weekend for Classical Solo Singers

As the New Year begins, it’s a natural time for introspection and planning—a moment to pause, take stock, and envision the path ahead.

For us as singers, this season of renewal is also a chance to reconnect with the joy and artistry that make our vocal journeys so fulfilling. Singing, after all, is good for the soul. It’s an expression of creativity, a means of connecting with others, and a way to ground ourselves in something deeply personal yet universally shared. And that’s why I’m so excited to invite you to Love Your Voice 2025.

This 3-day workshop event is a cornerstone of my work within The Voice School—where singers come to grow, explore, and refine their craft. It’s not just about technique, though that’s a vital part of what we’ll work on. It’s about nurturing the whole singer: embracing the creativity, individuality, and sheer joy that brought you to music in the first place. This ethos is at the heart of everything I do, from my teaching to the events I create, and Love Your Voice 2025 is no exception.

Each day of this event has been carefully planned to offer you a blend of inspiration, technical focus, and community. We’ll begin on Friday, March 21st, with a relaxed evening gathering to ease into the weekend. This informal start is a chance to meet your fellow singers, settle in, and set the tone for the days ahead.

The chosen venues have a welcoming atmosphere, and their picturesque settings provide the ideal backdrop for this learning journey.

On Day One, we’ll gather at The Jubilee Hall in Winsham, a beautiful historic space, with a wonderful acoustic perfectly suited to our work. This day is all about artistry and creativity, inspired by the Greek concept of Meraki—bringing your essence to what you create. Through warm-ups, guided exercises, and collaborative exploration, you’ll discover your voice and connect with the music that moves you. 

Day Two will take us to The Old Rectory in Chaffcombe, where the focus shifts to the dynamic interplay between singer and accompanist. Working with a live pianist brings a new depth to your experience, and there’s something truly magical about creating music in real-time collaboration. The stunning music studio at The Old Rectory is an inspiring space, and I’m thrilled to have Geraldine Wills joining us again as accompanist. Her skill and insight make this day an unforgettable experience.

On Day Three, we’ll return to Winsham, this time to the intimate setting of Church Farmhouse. After two days of expressive singing and performance, this is your opportunity to hone in on vocal technique. We’ll address individual technical challenges in a supportive environment, ensuring you leave the workshop with practical tools and fresh insights to carry forward in your singing journey. This day is about refining your skills and deepening your understanding of your voice.

Winsham is a treasure, and it’s a joy to hold this event in such a warm and inviting village. From the community-owned village shop to The Bell Inn just steps away from Jubilee Hall, the village offers plenty of charm and character to enrich your experience. During breaks, you can enjoy the stunning countryside views or take a quiet moment to reflect.

In the evenings, I’ll arrange optional dinners at nearby venues—a wonderful way to share stories, insights, and laughter with your fellow singers.

Love Your Voice 2025 is more than just a workshop weekend event; it’s an opportunity to connect with a supportive group of like-minded singers, all sharing the journey of artistry and growth. To help foster this connection, you’ll be invited to join The Green Room, a private online discussion group. This is where you can meet other participants, ask questions, and stay updated on event details. It’s also a space to share inspiration and continue the conversation long after the weekend is over.

For those who are new to The Voice School, you might also know me through Little Soprano—my longstanding blog where I’ve shared over a decade of reflections, insights, and experiences from the world of singing. The Voice School and Little Soprano are deeply connected, both rooted in my passion for helping singers thrive. While Little Soprano captures the personal and reflective side of this journey, The Voice School is where that vision comes to life through teaching, mentorship, and events like Love Your Voice. Together, they form a comprehensive approach to nurturing the singer within.

Applications for Love Your Voice 2025 are now open, and places are limited to six participating singers per day to ensure a truly tailored and intimate experience. Observers are always welcome, and we can discuss options for this nearer the time. For Day Two, working with the live accompanist, early applications are encouraged to secure your place.

“This is the day, guys,” Robin said, with a smile that barely hid her anxiety. “There’s no turning back.”

“We’re going to crush it,” Ezra replied, giving her a knowing look.

The debut single, "Happy Death Day," was about to be released on all platforms, and although the band had faith in their work, no one truly expected the immediate success that would follow. They had worked hard, but they were aware that the Korean music market was saturated with new bands and groups. Still, everyone believed in the unique sound they had created.

The release was simple: with minimal promotion, just a few social media posts, and a modest music video produced by Hyunjae, which would be uploaded a few hours later. Meraki was still an unknown band, and the record label, while confident in them, had no great expectations for the debut.
