Aged puerh tea cakes often exhibit signs of wear and tear, such as the ones we encountered when we opened the bamboo wrapping. The paper on the top and bottom of the tea cakes had been broken, and some of the wrapping paper had holes from being bitten by bugs while stored in the bamboo wrapping. Tasting: “Wu Zi Deng Ki” Ripe Puerh

I got this cake in my big tea haul last year and for some reason kept over looking it. I finally decided to pull it out and break into it. After doing so I can’t begin to tell you how much I regret waiting so long! This little 250g cake is a bombshell. Made me the Menghai Tea Factory under their Dayi brand in 2018, this is a part of their yearly release of Wu Zi Deng Ki (for the future benefit of your children). These cakes were first released in 2010, and have since become very popular and sought after, and after tasting it I can see why.

Before I even unwrapped the cake, it always already heavily aromatic through the wrapper. A mouthwatering ripe puerh aroma filled my nose throughout the unwrapping, photo taking and breaking process. The dry leaf is heavily aromatic as expected with notes of caramel, sweet pipe tobacco and a mellow earthiness you would normally expect to find on a ripe puerh. The wet leaf has a more milky kind of caramel scent, much like a dulce de leche. It has a woody earthiness with a very small hint of smoke and a strong but sweet scent of tobacco.

The brew is very thick and velvety smooth with a rich and creamy mouthfeel and mouthwatering coffee like maltiness.  The first infusion has a strong woody musk with notes of pine wood and rich English toffee.  The second infusion has a stronger musk with additional earthy flavors of mushroom and peat. I also found it to have notes of Chinese five spice and antique wood furniture. Still quite malty with a strong vibrant flavor.  

Six infusions in and this little guy was still kicking ass. The brew remained strong and powerful throughout and coated the tongue in a thick and creamy coating with an aftertaste of mushroom. 

A little cake. A whole lot of power! I want to take a moment to apologize to this cake for putting it off for so long. I was wrong! So wrong that after tasting it, I immediately went on the Yunnan Sourcing website to see how much a 5x 150g cake tin would cost to stock up for future sessions, only to find the price for a single cake hand already DOUBLED since last year. Guess that’s what I get for waiting so long. What was a $20 cake is now over $40! It’s no real surprise though as the cake is beyond magnificent.

Tasting: 2017 Menghai DaYi V93 Ripe Puerh

In the fascinating world of puerh teas, there are certain growing areas and factories with a long history of producing exceptional puerh tea. One such factory is the Menghai Tea Factory, from which this lovely little ripe toucha comes from. Sold under the DaYi name, the V93 recipe is a popular and well sought after puerh. This toucha was pressed in 2017 and has already gotten a chance to age for a few years.

The dry leaf gave off wonderful aromas of sweet nectar, brown sugar or perhaps closer to caramel, and a scent of fresh summer air in the woods. The brown sugar came through more as a burnt caramelized sugar on the wet leaf with hints of wet forest wood, and sweet notes of dried figs or dates.

The brewed tea is thick, smooth and creamy, with flavors of caramelized sugar, sweet syrup and a very subtle earthy musk on the end. Further infusions later and you can still taste the flavor of burnt caramelized sugar, a slightly deeper musk and high notes of sweet dried fruits.

The aftertaste reminded me of the mouth feel after eating a slightly burnt cookie or baked good. Clean, with a little bitterness on the back of the throat.

I found this puerh outstanding. Such deep, rich complex flavors and aromas that took me almost a full hour of tasting to find. A very flavorful and smooth puerh for an amazing price. Good for everyday drinking or stored for a special occasion. Therefore I am giving this tea a 4 out of 5 star rating. It’s not quite the best puerh I’ve ever had but it’s damn well close and I will be buying a whole bag next time.

This is a special tea bought by a good friend many years ago. He wanted to share his 1950's Hong Yin with me, but had mistakenly brought this tea cake which I believe is a 1980-1990 Menghai tea factory made cake. Didn't pay attention to this Menghai 7692 puerh until I tasted it few days ago. I thought it must be a very dark and mellow tasting tea. But I was wrong. The fermentation of this tea is not too high. I need to taste it again to have a better idea.
