Not to get super niche once again today, but 《Love O2O》 x 《I Hear You》 crossover where Yiran is mistaken for Tang Li by Yu Sheng and the way he interacts with her makes Banshan jealous

So it turned out I was only 4 eps from the end of Love O2O so I finished that last night. My final thoughts are pretty much the same as my middle thoughts- whatever Hao Mei and K.O. had going on was way more interesting than the main romance.
Once again Mao Xiaotong plays a 'not pretty' character while being the prettiest and most capable actress (I guess technically not 'again' since this was out before Princess Weiyoung, but if I had a nickel for every time MXT plays a second fiddle when she's noticeably cuter, I'd have two nickels etc.).
And like, I don't know if there's an original novel for this so I certainly haven't read it, and I haven't seen any of the lead actress's other shows, but Wei Wei looked legit scared of Xiao Nai sometimes, often when it was supposed to come across as playful, and it's like, is this an acting choice, a point in the original, or just her face?
I did appreciate that the girls don't actually fight over guys or that whats-her-name's scheming actually worked, and that Wei Wei and Erxi's misunderstanding is resolved fairly quickly. And I didn't mind the Meng Yiran stuff, which could have been annoying- Yiran was clearly learning about herself and trying to be a better person. Meng Yiran actually had a better character arc than Bei Wei Wei, who is the same person at the end of the show as she was at the beginning. Maybe even less independent. Like, Bei Wei Wei is such a go-with-the-flow sort, and it's a little annoying to see her strive for nothing and still have everything fall into her lap. It's kind of annoying, and I think I understand Aiba Yuuki from Infinite Ryvius better.
(For my non-Ryvius friends out there, two of the main characters are the Aiba brothers, Kouji and Yuuki. When they were young, Kouji, the elder, is a go-with-the-flow personality, who doesn't really try very hard and avoids conflict. Yuuki is so annoyed by this weak-willed and ingratiating personality that he physically fights with Kouji (ostensibly over a girl, if I remember correctly, but it was really about Kouji's attitude towards the situation) and Kouji gets a big scar from his injuries. It's a little more complicated but that's the gist of it. Anyways, I always liked Kouji better and couldn't stand Yuuki, but seeing Wei Wei made me understand Yuuki's perspective a little better, because that is annoying to have to witness and deal with all the time.)
(Also that was all backstory, the show is not about two brothers fighting about stupid shit, Ryvius is a fantastic show for its time, it was my favorite anime for years and years, don't let my description stop you from watching it.)
So yeah, in summary, Love O2O is a fun little romp and I would recommend it, just don't be surprised if you're more invested in the side characters.

Yknow I finally took that leap and started watching Love O2O..
Other than the dubbing they somehow only did on Wei Wei’s actress (and no one else)... the most unbelievable thing so far is that Wei Wei’s friends straight up laughed at Wei Wei for suggesting Xiao Nai was looking at her during the basketball game (ep 10 or 11?), when this entire time, they’d been hyping up Wei Wei as this mega beauty...
And I’m like...how is it laughable that he (purely on a looks/appearance/superficial level) could be looking at the girl who apparently came second in the school wide beauty ranking??
I don’t mind Meng Yiran. Other than being a little catty and using her position as a rich girl, most of the backhanded or nasty things have been done either by or encouraged by Na Na...who’s really the most toxic one so far... Yiran just kinda has a strong crush on Xiao Nai with no real substance behind it... but she’s not a terrible person?
In any case the show has been fun so far, if a little slow paced... I’m ready for Hao Mei and KO to get going toooooo

Love Triangles
I was thinking the other day, about what determines the second male/female and what determines the main male/female lead. And then I was thinking about which romantic dramas don’t involve love triangles and I... couldn’t think of any. So today I will analyze one, love triangle tropes, and two why dramas always include love triangles.
Tumblr media
The love triangle in A Love So Beautiful
Types of Love Triangles
There are three main types of love triangles:
A - when the male/female lead has loved both persons in the love triangle
B - when both members of the love triangle have their moments with the male/female lead
C - when its obvious that one member of the love triangle is seen only as a “friend” or “sister” or “brother” (aka has no chance)
Some dramas feature love triangle B and love triangle C at the same time, here are some examples:
Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜)
Love triangle B: Xu Feng (旭凤) - Jin Mi (锦觅) - Run Yu (润玉)
Love triangle C: Sui He (穗禾) - Xu Feng (旭凤) - Jin Mi (锦觅)
Blossom in Heart (海棠经雨胭脂透)
Love triangle B: Lang Yuexuan (朗月轩) - Gu Haitang (顾海棠) - Lang Yueming (朗月明)
Love triangle C: Long Mohua (龙莫婳) - Lang Yuexuan (朗月轩) - Gu Haitang (顾海棠)
Legend of Yunxi (芸汐传)
Love triangle B: Long Feiye (龙非夜) - Han Yunxi (韩芸汐) - Gu Qishao (顾七少)
Love triangle C: Baili Mingxiang (百里茗香) - Long Feiye (龙非夜) - Han Yunxi (韩芸汐)
Some feature both love triangle A and love triangle C as well:
Put Your Head on My Shoulder
Love triangle A: Gu Weiyi (顾未易) - Situ Mo (司徒末) - Fu Pei (傅沛)
Love triangle C: Xie Yuyin (谢雨吟) - Gu Weiyi (顾未易) - Situ Mo (司徒末)
Princess Agents (楚乔传)
Love triangle A: Yuwen Yue (宇文玥) - Chu Qiao (楚乔) - Yan Xun (燕洵)
Love triangle C: Yuan Chun (元淳) - Yan Xun (燕洵) - Chu Qiao (楚乔)
The Story of Yanxi Palace
Love triangle A: Qian Long (乾隆) - Wei Yingluo (魏璎珞) - Fucha Fuheng (富察傅恒)
Love triangle C: Chun Fei (纯妃) - Fucha Fuheng (富察傅恒) - Wei Yingluo (魏璎珞)
Rookie Agent Rouge (胭脂)
Love triangle A: Zhou Yuhao (周宇浩) - Lan Yanzhi (蓝胭脂) - Song Mian (宋勉)
Love triangle C: Feng Manna (冯曼娜) - Zhou Yuhao (周宇浩) - Lan Yanzhi (蓝胭脂)
As you can see through these seven shows, commonly the main love triangle is composed of two guys one girl, while the secondary “love triangle C” is composed of two girls and one guy.
Tumblr media
The love triangle in Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre (倚天屠龙记) and one of the few love triangles not to follow the two guys fighting for one girl triangle.
Characteristics of Love Triangles
Almost always, the two members vying for the affection in the triangle are foils to each other. Examples:
A Love So Beautiful
Jiang Chen (江辰) - mature, cold and extremely smart
Wu Bosong (吴柏松) - careless, kind and bad grades
Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜)
Xu Feng (旭凤) - arrogant and proud
Run Yu (润玉) - quiet and calm
Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre
Zhao Min (赵敏) - clever, manipulative
Zhou Zhiruo (周芷若) - “innocent, selfless” (I mean she technically is worse than Zhao Min, but that’s not the mask she puts on)
In school dramas you typically have the smart guy and the dumb girl pairing that eventually wins out:
A Love So Beautiful
Jiang Chen (江辰) and Chen Xiaoxi (陈晓希)
When We Were Young
Hua Biao (花彪) and Yang Xi (杨夕)
With You (最好的我们)
Yu Huai (余淮) and Geng Geng (耿耿)
Le Coup de Foudre (我只喜欢你)
Yan Mo (言默) and Zhao Qiaoyi (赵乔一)
Tumblr media
The love triangle in Meteor Garden 2019 (流星花园) - can you guess (if you’ve never watched this show) who the winning couple is?
You may also have the celebrity/popular/rich kid with a poor/hardworking person pairing:
Meteor Garden (流星花园) - Daoming Si (道明寺) and Shan Cai (杉菜)
Accidentally in Love (惹上冷殿下) - Situ Feng (司徒枫) and Chen Qingqing (陈青青)
My Little Princess (亲爱的, 公主病) - Lin Xingchen (林星辰) and Jiang Nianyu (江念雨)
Boss and Me (杉杉来了) - Feng Teng (封腾) and Xue Shanshan (薛杉杉)
Blossom in Heart (海棠经雨胭脂透) - Lang Yuexuan (朗月轩) and Gu Haitang (顾海棠)
In most dramas you also have the “cold” second/main male lead:
A Love So Beautiful (致我们单纯的小美好) - Jiang Chen (江辰)
Princess Agents (楚乔传) - Yuwen Yue (宇文玥)
Goodbye My Princess (东宫) - Gu Jian (顾剑)
Often there’s also the “childhood friend” aspect, and while that particular trope usually looses out there are some exceptions:
A Love So Beautiful (致我们单纯的小美好) - Jiang Chen (江辰) - main lead
When We Were Young (人不彪悍枉少年) - Li Yu (李漁) - second lead
Heavenly Sword and Dragon Saber (倚天屠龙记) - Zhou Zhiruo (周芷若) - second lead
Goodbye My Princess (东宫) - Gu Jian (顾剑) - second lead
Put Your Head on My Shoulder (致我们暖暖的小时光) - Fu Pei (傅沛) - second lead
In some dramas, almost any male character that appears is in love with the female lead:
Princess Agents (楚乔传) - female lead gets the love of:
Yuwen Yue (宇文玥)
Yan Xun (燕洵)
Yuan Song (元嵩)
Xiao Ce (萧策)
Journey of Flower (花千骨) - female lead gets the love of:
Bai Zihua (白子画)
Dongfang Yuqing (东方彧卿)
Meng Xuanlang (孟玄朗)
Startling With Each Step
Yin Zhen (胤禛)
Yin Si (胤禩)
Yin Ti (胤禵)
Yin E (胤䄉)
The male leads in Startling With Each Step/Scarlet Heart were lucky! They all got something with the female lead:
Male lead: Yin Zhen (胤禛) - is the true love/soulmate
Second male lead: Yin Si (胤禩) - gets her love in the first half
Third male lead: Yin Ti (胤禵) - gets to marry her
So What Differentiates the First and Second Male Leads?
Tumblr media
The love triangle in Goodbye My Princess (东宫) - can you guess (if you’ve never watched this show) who the winning couple is?
Typically the female lead just likes one of them and you can’t really give a reason for why the first male lead is better than the second one. However, some dramas do a good job of creating a jerk second male lead that makes the decision sufficiently easier for our female lead:
Princess Agents (楚乔传)
Second male lead Yan Xun (燕洵) kind of goes insane after his entire family is slaughtered and becomes obsessed over revenge. He looses all the qualities our female lead fell in love with him for.
Put Your Head on My Shoulder
Second male lead Fu Pei (傅沛) is a literal jerk. He takes our female lead’s love for granted and constantly abandons her when she needs help.
Bloody Romance (媚者无疆)
Second male lead Gong Zi (公子) treats people like chess pieces instead of real humans, and is willing to kill or manipulate anyone. Our female lead, being kind and unwilling to kill anyone, obviously would never fall for him.
My Little Princess (亲爱的,公主病)
Second male lead Zheng Chuyao (郑楚曜) is childish and immature. He is unwilling to confess his love for the female lead and constantly embarrasses her instead.
However, in most other cases, there is never a clear difference between who wins out in a love triangle. One similarity most share is that the first one to speak with the female lead wins out:
Bloody Romance (媚者无疆)
A Love So Beautiful
Accidentally in Love (惹上冷殿下)
Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜)
Blossom in Heart (海棠经雨胭脂透)
My Little Princess (亲爱的,公主病)
The Princess Weiyoung (锦绣未央)
The Story of Minglan
Lucky’s First Love
Tumblr media
The love triangle in Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜) - can you guess (if you’ve never watched this show) who the winning couple is?
Usually, the second male lead is the type of person who will forever watch over the female lead, caring for them are a subtle way. They are kinder, calmer, and perhaps more down to earth and human:
A Love So Beautiful (致我们单纯的小美好) - Wu Bosong (吴柏松)
Meteor Garden (流星花园) - Hua Zelei (花泽类)
Goodbye My Princess (东宫) - Gu Jian (顾剑)
Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜) - Run Yu (润玉)
Accidentally in Love (惹上冷殿下) - Gu Nanxi (顾南锡)
When We Were Young (人不彪悍枉少年) - Li Yu (李漁)
Legend of Yunxi (芸汐传) - Gu Qishao (顾七少)
In cases of the above, the male lead is usually more cold or immature:
A Love So Beautiful (致我们单纯的小美好) - Jiang Chen (江辰)
Meteor Garden (流星花园) - Daoming Si (道明寺)
Goodbye My Princess (东宫) - Li Chengyin (李承鄞)
Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜)
Accidentally in Love (惹上冷殿下) - Situ Feng (司徒枫)
When We Were Young
Legend of Yunxi (芸汐传) - Long Feiye (龙非夜)
With second female leads, the similarities are rather obvious. They think they “deserve” the love of the male lead because they either grew up together or they have the same social standing:
Goodbye My Princess (东宫) - Zhao Sese (赵瑟瑟)
Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜) - Sui He (穗禾)
Legend of Yunxi (芸汐传) - Baili Mingxiang (百里茗香)
Love O2O (微微一笑很倾城) - Meng Yiran (孟逸然)
Blossom in Heart (海棠经雨胭脂透) - Long Mohua (龙莫婳)
Boss and Me (杉杉来了) - Yuan Lishu (元丽抒)
While the male lead often sees his excess admirers as “sisters” the female lead simply friend zones them.
Often, the male lead is also somewhat of a foil to the female lead:
Boss and Me (杉杉来了)
Xue Shanshan (薛杉杉) is innocent, a little stupid and cute
Feng Teng (封腾) is mature, intelligent and cold
Ashes of Love (香蜜沉沉烬如霜)
Jin Mi (锦觅) is unaware of love and a little stupid
Xu Feng (旭凤) is fully aware of his feelings and smarter
Goodbye My Princess (东宫)
Qu Xiaofeng (曲小枫) is innocent, kind and longs to go home
Li Chengyin (李承鄞) is cold, cruel and willing to do anything to keep Xiaofeng by his side
If you really just want to tell who’s the male lead, I’ll tell you an easy way to find out: he’s going to be played by the guy who’s more famous.
Tumblr media
The love triangle in Startling With Each Step (步步惊心) - can you guess who’s the first, second, and third male leads are?
So Why do Dramas Love Love Triangles?
Not to say TV shows have lazy writing or anything, but I feel like love triangles are an easy way to make both male and female leads realize their feelings. For instance, in Boss and Me, when our female lead (Shan Shan), sees our male lead (Feng Teng) dancing with another girl, she gets jealous. That makes her realize her feelings. Love triangles can also stretch out a TV show longer. A show that might only have 24 episodes can probably be stretched to more than 30 just due to love triangles.
On a level of characterization, when a character has many admirers, we, as watchers, can infer various things about them. Either they are one, amazingly beautiful or successful, or two, amazingly unique. For example, Chu Qiao in Princess Agents is strong and intelligent and for that reason, almost every guy she comes in contact with falls head over heels for her. This can show you that she is one of a kind in this world. Very few women in Princess Agents are as straightforward of their power, and so she really is unique. Xiaofeng in Goodbye My Princess has admirers because she is kind, innocent and selfless. Her bright and cheerful personality contrasts heavily with the political and dark atmosphere of the palace. So, when a character is entangled in many love triangles, you can infer there’s something special about them, and use that hypothesis to further infer something about the world in which the television show takes place.
Love triangles can also lead to more character development. In trying to get girl (or very rarely guy), the admirers must rise to become a better version of themselves. For example, in Meteor Garden, Daoming Si goes from being bratty and immature to being (relatively more) mature and understanding. In A Love So Beautiful, Jiang Chen goes from being a guy that’s cold and pushes people away to a guy who is more open about his feelings and love.
So, while in some shows, love triangles exist purely to elongate the show, in other shows we can use love triangles as a way to investigate the society we are plunged into at the start of the show.
Notes:
Would you say Go Go Squid (亲爱的, 热爱的) has a love triangle. That weird press lady likes the male lead, but she has like four scenes in total.
Here’s another thought I had about love: the ability of a character to admit their feelings often reflects upon how they’ve lived up til that point. Characters that do not understand their feelings could either have grown up isolated, never been in a relationship or have been fed a pill by their mother that takes away their ability to love. Characters who confess more easily were probably raised with loving parents in a loving household with loving friends surrounding them. Characters that understand their feelings at once know themselves well, and they can understand love. They either were raised in a loving family, or have been in love before. Love is a strange concept, sometimes we can’t handle it, and a lot of times we can’t understand it. TV shows feature humans (or at least things that look like humans) and so they deal with that aforementioned problem too.

Chapters: 4/108 Fandom: Naruto, 微微一笑很傾城 | Love O2O (TV) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Haruno Sakura/Uchiha Sasuke, Eventual Hyuuga Hinata/Uzumaki Naruto, Eventual Hyuuga Neji/Tenten, Nara Shikamaru/Temari, eventual Sai/Yamanaka Ino, Sai / OC, Eventual Aburame Shino/Inuzuka Kiba Characters: Uchiha Sasuke, Haruno Sakura Additional Tags: Romance, Fluff, Alternate Universe - Modern Setting, Gaming, Alternate Universe - College/University Summary:
Second-year Computer Science student Sakura never thought her road to find true love IRL would begin with a divorce in-game. But the Way of the Ninja is long and winding - and the person who takes her hand to travel it together is the last person she was expecting. How does the server's number one know who she is?!
Chapter 4 is up! In which Sakura and Sasuke try to beat the shit out of each other, and Sasuke wonders why he has idiots for friends
Also on FF.Net: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13527403/4/A-Tiny-Smirk-is-Devastating
and Wattpad:https://www.wattpad.com/863847339-a-tiny-smirk-is-devastating-chapter-4-the-newly
Extended Authors Notes and behind the scenes worldbuilding notes after the jump, but spoilers exist so please read the chapter first!
So who thought Sasuke was going to win the fight? Honestly, with as many abilities as Sasuke has, I had a hard time figuring out the whole fight choreo, and I’m not the best at writing action in the first place. Somehow, there’s a lot more action in this fic than I was anticipating .___. The author handwaved a lot of it with a sentence or two in the original light novel, and the scenes in drama are expensive to film, but I REFUSE TO COMPROMISE....
So I torment myself and my Beta, writing things I’m not good at. Sorry Reg... Plus since I decided to use the Narutoverse as the game instead of the original Wuxia/Martial arts game setting, I can’t even steal their choreo. However, I do owe a debt of gratitude to all the Naruto Shippuden players who post their fights on youtube - you guys are the bomb.
It was fun though! I like watching Sakura beat the crap out of Sasuke, and this whole the fight scene is virtual, so it doesn’t actually hurt, lol (unlike actual canon).
And we get introduced to the guys! Their Naruto Character to Love O2O role mapping is a bit more fluid than the girls, because honestly the three of them are a bit interchangeable in the drama. Roughly, the mappings are (and I’ll give you the usernames while I’m at it):
Uzumaki Naruto (OldRamenMan)-> Yu Ban Shan (YuGongPaShan)
Inuzuka Kiba (Beowulf69) -> Hao Mei (Mo Zha Ta)
Akimichi Chouji (RollOutBoy) -> Qiu YongHou  (HouZiJiu)
Yamanaka Ino -> Meng Yiran
Please note that the story is tagged as an eventual InoSai, so no, no incest guys (Meng Yiran and Zhen Shaoxiang are cousins IRL). This means changes! Hehehe~ But I’ll leave you to wrack your brains over it, because that’s what I had to do to get this thing fully outlined. It’s going to be fun and it’ll work, I promise.
For those of you who are keeping track, chapter 4 is roughly the beginning of episode 2 in the drama. However, sharp-eyed and mathematically inclined readers on AO3 will notice that I have 108 chapters, so while I started with about a 3 chapters - 1 episode ratio.... yeah I didn’t keep to it. For those of you who haven’t seen the drama and don’t want the fic to be spoiled, go ahead and watch episode 1! It’s on youtube!

this time lapse that cannot be escaped
for prompt #40 (“hiding/hoping not to be found”) for my 76 Kisses challenge!  this is technically the second chapter to a fic that i called in my mind “character study presented as romance” and posted on ao3.  long story short, i felt meng yiran deserved better friends and wanted to see her character develop more than it did during the show.  and i imprinted on yu banshan like a baby duckling.  this is connected to prompt #52 (”accidentally witnessed kiss”)
《love o2o》 meng yiran x yu banshan, est relationship, character study, post-canon, canon compliant, characters might be ooc but they’re definitely oob (out of breath), author needs to add nct 127′s “time lapse” to List of Songs to Not Write to Unless I Want to End Up Writing Characters in a Very Interesting Situation (the only other song on that list being wayv’s 《after midnight》) ~2k words
76 Kisses Masterlist || ao3 link || prompt 52
Yiran couldn’t help the small, breathless giggle that escaped her mouth as Banshan pulled her to him.  The surprised, but pleased, look on his face is so endearing to her.  A wave of affection for him washes over her.  She wraps her arms around his waist, leaning back to look at him.  He had forgone his contacts this morning, and instead wore the same pair of glasses he’s had since uni.  (Sisi was her informant for that lovely tidbit of information.  Yiran didn’t know whether to laugh or be mortified, but then again, she was a different person.)
They were standing around the corner of Zhi Yi Tech’s elevator, in a lesser used corridor of the building.  Down the side of the hallway they stood in were just a bunch of storage for unused parts and miscellaneous items.  She was almost positive that one room was filled with art supplies that were only used for mockups and preliminary sketches of art for whatever game or game update they were working on.  Down the other side was a few bedrooms for when the employees of Zhi Yi are on a deadline and need to sleep without leaving.  It was obvious that no one was there, or else he wouldn’t have risked bringing her here.
Their relationship was not a secret, necessarily, but neither of them really went around the office shouting it.  Despite working at Zhi Yi for several months, now, Yiran still didn’t feel quite comfortable being there.  Part of this, she knows, is that the main set of people in charge at the company are Banshan’s friends.  Which meant they went to uni together.  And, not only did they go to uni together, but he was roommates with three of them.  So they knew who she was.  Working with them has (hopefully) changed their opinion of her, but she knows that the four of them are brothers in everything but blood.  The second part was that she still hasn’t managed to get a chance to talk with Xiao Nai and Weiwei alone.  She knows that it will happen eventually, and she’s been busy getting their communications department up-to-date, but it still weighed on her from time to time.  And third…
She saw what happened with other girls in her family’s circle when they dated within whatever company their dads ran.  She was part of what happened, the talking behind their backs, the rumors spread within the company.  Yiran knows that, to an extent, her situation is different.  She was hired long before they even started dating, and they didn’t even work in the same department.  But in many ways, it is the same.  Her insecurities from university about not being enough still had a grip on her now.  The doubts sank their claws into her bones and sometimes it felt like she would never be able to get rid of them.
Is it possible she just got the job as part of some long form revenge plot?  Did Banshan actually like her at all?  Does she even deserve to be working here?  Should she have taken up her uncle’s offer instead?  Sure, she’d be hiding who she is, but in a way isn’t that what she was doing now?
Banshan brings one hand up to cup her face, his thumb stroking over her cheekbone absentmindedly.  His other is wrapped around her waist, anchoring her.  “Hey, are you with me?”
Yiran hadn’t even realized she was spiraling until he asked.  She blinks a few times, regaining her bearings.  She focuses on breathing, on feeling the fabric of his shirt under her arms, the heat of his body under that.  It isn’t until a few deep breaths later that she realizes Banshan was breathing with her.  She tilts forward, her forehead resting against his sternum.  “I’m sorry,” she says, her voice muffled by the Henley.
He moved his hand when she started tilting into him.  He gently stroked the back of her head, his fingers sliding through her hair easily.  “Why?”
Yiran looked up, her chin resting where her forehead had been.  Banshan looked genuinely confused at her apology, which made Yiran frown in confusion.  She had just spiraled into her basket of insecurities when he definitely had pulled her around the corner for something else.  “You were being all cute and romantic and having a secret rendezvous, and I ruined it.”
Banshan’s confusion turns into a fond smile.  This isn’t the first time that she got in her head about something, and it probably wouldn’t be the last.  Lucky for him, ‘words of affirmation’ was one of his stronger love languages.  He tucks some of her hair behind her ear.  “I wouldn’t say you ruined it.  After all, we’re both still standing here, hm?  Neither of us have been in any grave dangers, right?”  He moves to cup her face in his hands, “I’d put this in the “Win” column, personally.”
His comment had the intended effect.  Yiran’s face broke into a smile.  “You would, would you?”  She brings one of her hands up to his heart and rises up on her toes.  “Prove it.”
“Of course,” Banshan says, leaning down to meet her lips.  He stops just before their lips meet and he changes course and pulls back.  Before Yiran can do so much as pout, Banshan kisses the tip of her nose.  And then moves to her forehead.  And then temples.  Soon, he’s just peppering kisses all over her face, savoring her giggles.  Yiran moved to hold his wrists, just enjoying the sudden affection.  She was surprised that he felt this comfortable in the office to be so free with it, but she chalked it up to that he wanted to reassure her.  … and the fact that no one else was on this floor, so they didn’t have to explain themselves if they were to be caught.
He kisses the part of her cheekbone that was right next to his thumb, and Yiran lets out a small whine.  “Yu Banshan!  Just kiss me already!”  She barely got the order out before he finally, blissfully, pressed his lips to hers.
After being teased for so long, despite however enjoyable it was, Yiran relishes the feeling.  She sighs into the kiss as his hands move position again, grabbing her hips and pushing her back to the wall.  Her arms come up around his neck, one hand holding him in place and the other playing with the ends of his hair.  Despite her earlier worries, Yiran does feel a small thrill run up her spine at someone seeing them.
She likes Banshan, really and truly likes him.  And for all her posturing, sometimes she wishes that more people than Sisi and his friends knew.  While she wouldn’t do anything in the office, at least in the main part, that would be inappropriate, she would like to go out to dinners and not have to sit away from him.  Occasionally, by some conversion of the fates, they were able to sit next to each other.  But, in a way, that was almost worse.  She would be able to feel him next to her, and couldn’t do so much as lean into him.  Not in front of co-workers who didn’t know they were dating.
The press of his glasses against her skin is not something she often feels.  Banshan prefers to wear his contacts whenever possible, despite Yiran badgering him about being in front of the computer for so long.  Even she bit the bullet and bought herself a pair of glasses that had the special technology stuff that was supposed to prevent eyestrain and headaches.  She knows his are the same, which makes it all the more annoying he never wears them.  Still, she pampered him whenever he complained about having a headache, taking his contacts out, and laying his head in her lap.
Yiran tilts her head slightly, mid-kiss, and accidentally catches his lip on her teeth.  The choked groan he lets out has her flushing from head to toe, her veins filled with electricity.  Momentarily forgetting herself, she does it again.  Purposefully this time.  She nips his lower lip and his fingers tighten around her hips, the fabric bunching.  The wrinkles would instantly tell the world what they are up to, even if they get themselves sorted before going downstairs.  All of her senses are focused on him.  The sound of their breaths and lips, the feeling of his body against hers, the smell of his cologne… every part of Yiran is drowning in him.  She doesn’t want a life raft.  The passion he was showing, normally kept to either of their apartments, is addicting.
The loud ring of his phone, echoing around the empty hall, jolts them out of their reverie like cold water to the face.  Banshan, his eyes glazed, has to force himself to let go of her.  He takes a step back, putting some distance between them.  He shoves his hand into his pocket and pulls out his phone roughly, glaring at it.  Yiran watches him, taking in the small details of their post-makeout session.  His hair is messy, sticking up in odd places.  His clothes are rumpled, though she’s not sure how that happened.  Banshan’s lips are red from the kissing and the biting.  Yiran touches her lips and knows, in her heart, that they look the same as his.
“… alright, alright, I’ll be right there,” he says into the phone, his free hand coming up to run through his hair.  “Yeah.”  The word is drawn out and filled with caution.  Whatever the person on the other line said makes Banshan’s eyes widen.  He looks at Yiran with mild panic.  “No,” he says forcefully, “we do not need to have that discussion.  God.  Goodbye.”
Yiran raises an eyebrow as she smooths out her clothes.  “Do I want to know or…?”  She holds her laughter back as Banshan walks back over to her, defeated.  He drops his head on her shoulder and she blinks rapidly, fighting the smile that wants to rise on her face.  “There, there,” she says, patting him on the shoulder.
“Stop enjoying this,” he mumbles half-heartedly.
“Okay, baby, sure I will,” Yiran agrees easily, knowing she will continue to enjoy this.  After a few more seconds, she says, “We should probably go downstairs.”  She moves her shoulder, attempting to gently move her boyfriend into an upright position.
Banshan releases a dramatic sigh and stands up properly.  Yiran’s hands come up automatically to fix his hair; his earlier attempt didn’t really do all that much if she was being honest.  As she does that, his thumb swipes under her bottom lip and she’s suddenly reminded she had put on a pink lipstick that morning.  After she sorts out his hair, she does the same motion to him, trying to wipe away the pink smudges.
“You go ahead,” she says when she finishes.  “I have to go to the bathroom and reapply the lipstick you took off.”
Banshan gives her a cocky smile.  “That just means I fulfilled my job as boyfriend properly.”
She rolls her eyes and pushes off of the wall, heading down the other corridor to the bathrooms.  “Goodbye, Banshan,” she calls over her shoulder, putting as much exasperation as she can into her tone.  “Have fun downstairs!”
She hears his answering groan of resignation and smiles.  He fulfilled his job as boyfriend, and now he’s got to fulfill his job as one of the founding members of Zhi Yi.  All Yiran has to do after she’s fixed herself up is look at her emails.  And maybe plan a way to reward Banshan later tonight for being a good boyfriend…

So I’ve been binge-watching Accidentally in Love this week, my second Chinese drama after Love O2O and at first I really, really loved it. Qingqing is a really awesome heroine and her relationship with Situ Feng has spark and chemistry. The secondary characters are charming and it’s honestly hilarious. For the first 2/3rds of the drama anyway.
Spoilers ahead...
I am now really struggling with it and it’s because of the Mean Girl, Lan Xinya. I get that the Mean Rich Girl is a trope from watching Love O2O and, like, every single US high school movie ever. Meng Yiran was pretty irritating in Love O2O but she was bearable because she didn’t actually seem to hold much sway over the other characters and she apologised at the end and got to leave with some dignity. Xiao Nai was always in Weiwei’s camp and Weiwei herself made a point of rising above it. Yes, she was annoying but she was bearable.
Lan Xinya is something else altogether. She has been a complete bitch to literally everyone apart from her tiny little posse of supporters and has really and truly publicly bullied Qingqing since day 1. This isn’t cool. One of the great things about Qingqing is that she has oodles of self-confidence and she knows she doesn’t deserve Xinya’s taunts and at first it was almost funny to hear Xinya lord her money, status and good looks over Qingqing when she and the viewers know that Qingqing out of disguise has got her beat.
But Xinya just won’t stop. And now she’s basically threatening suicide if she doesn’t get what she wants. And, like, this isn’t a joking matter! This is too serious! But the music goes soft when we see her ~pain. And like, I have no objection to showing mean people as 3D and explaining where their pain comes from and seeing them grow and overcome it - Lin Yiyang is a great example in this drama of the redeemable bad boy - but Xinya is getting worse and you can see she feels pain and then she knuckles down and comes up with another horrible, nasty, bullying, manipulative plot. She’s like Medea - without any nuance of feminist outrage. I cannot feel any sympathy for her at all and watching her and her antics take over the plot is killing my enjoyment in the show.
MOREOVER, and this is worse, Xinya is friends with the good guys and none of them call her out on it. Like??????? Xinya is literally out there bullying Qingqing in front of her best friends and new boyfriend and nobody does anything??!?!?! At the beginning of the show, I loved Qingqing for giving as good as she gets but now she’s just tired and taking it??? And Situ Feng does NOTHING??? Why is Xinya and her friend Lanting - who is apparently like Situ Feng’s childhood bestie - accepted in their circles? Situ Feng and Gu Nanxi and Hua Munian are all good people and Yiyang is a good person who used to be a bully so should have no issue with putting people in their place. Why are they giving her the time of day? Why is nobody calling her out? This is making me dislike the likeable people now!
It’s honestly really making me dislike this show. I have never wanted a character to be publicly humiliated and smacked round the face and sent off in absolute disgrace more than Lan Xinya.
I don’t know if this is a Chinese cultural thing that I’m not getting. I understand politeness is very important, but the thing is that Lan Xinya is not polite, she’s horrible, and there are characters - including Qingqing - who are frank and open and able to give punches (literally and figuratively) so I don’t think it would be out of character for the characters in the drama to punish and shun Lan Xinya as she deserves.
Honestly, I’m at the point where I’m cringing as I watch and this is so sad. I want my cute, hilarious show where Qingqing bounces around with piles of energy and makes the world better for people to come back.
I hate this.

Fanfiction for the Chinese Drama Love O2O
Word Count: 433
Xiao Nai couldn’t place it.  He couldn’t figure out why, she kept looking away.  He didn’t think it was because he was ugly.  Years and years of girls chasing after him proved to him he wasn’t, though he could do without the stares so much.  His mother made sure his confidence wasn’t to egotistical, but it was still a big confidence booster.  So why was she looking away?
The one time he went to run at the college track, just to make sure it was her that he had saw at the internet cafe, he had finally made eye contact.  Though from a distance, yet the moment their eyes met, her body went rigid and she bolted in the opposite direction.  Xiao Nai has been trying to shake off the slight disappoint ever since.
One day he found himself at the library, researching on workspaces for the office they would be needing once college was over with.  He overheard a woman complaining to another girl about someone named Meng Yiran.  He was about to get up to leave, the whining was trying his patience but the name he had been dying to say came out her mouth.  He paused, wondering what this could be about.
“It’s not my fault that she’s jealous that Bei Wei wei likes Xiao Nai!  How could I stop other people from having feelings!”  Xiao Nai caught himself almost smiling in public at the words. He felt like a school boy finding out the girl he liked, felt the same way for the first time.
“Did she say she liked him?”  The other girl who also sounded her patience was being tested asked.
“She said she would like to date someone from her department, Like Xiao Nai, how is that not a confession?!  Why use his name at all?”  The girl complained more.  His smile disappeared.  That small difference, might not mean a lot to someone like her, but it does to someone like him & her.  She used him as an example, not as the main reason.  The smile was gone.
Later, he sat in front of his computer, finally home, away from other people, distractions.  Where he felt the most comfortable.  The most himself.  He opened up the game, to find her online already.  A message popped up, from her, asking to come and help her.
He knew while helping her fight, he just had to be patient. He had to wait for the right time, the right moment, to get her full attention, He just had to be patient.  Because...
That’s how you win Bei Wei Wei.

Review Love O2O 2011 – Yêu em từ cái nhìn đầu tiên: Phim lẻ Trung Quốc hấp dẫn
Tumblr media
Bei Weiwei (Angelababy) là sinh viên năm thứ hai ngành Khoa học máy tính và, dưới hình đại diện chơi game của nữ kiếm sĩ Luwei Weiwei, được xếp hạng bảy người chơi giỏi nhất trong phần nhiều người chơi trò chơi nhập vai trực tuyến 梦游 江湖 (“Mộng du thế giới võ thuật”) lấy bối cảnh ở Trường An cổ đại. Hay hơn phiên bản điện ảnh trước của tiểu thuyết Gu - You Are My Sunshine何以 笙箫 默 (2015), trong đó Yang tình cờ có một vai phụ - và dễ dàng là bộ phim hay nhất cho đến nay của đạo diễn không đồng đều Zhao Tianyu 赵天宇 ( Deadly Delicious双 食 记, 2008; Luật hấp dẫn万有引力, 2011; Zhongkui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal钟 馗 伏魔 雪 妖魔 灵, 2015), Love O2Otrình bày một món ăn trong khi cẩn thận không phê bình quá mức thói quen trực tuyến của đối tượng mục tiêu. I'm pleasantly surprised by the grace with which Meng Yiran was allowed to exit the narrative: She and Bei Weiwei aren't friends (and probably never will be), but she's recognized that her behavior was unacceptable, what (really) motivated her to behave so terribly, apologized, and is taking steps to remove herself from the environment that's allowed her to get away with all of this for so long so she can grow and become a better person. Bei Weiwei is, frankly, a fucking saint for letting bygones be bygones, but there's a lightness and openness to Meng Yiran in this farewell that makes you believe her and makes you want her to succeed in reforming herself this time
