I know I sound dumb but this is a real question. I know some other people from my country (Canada) were supposedly arrested in China without cause and I’ve always thought I would avoid visiting because the government is too dangerous. Was that really all propaganda I fell for or is there truth to it?
the two michaels, who i assume you're thinking of, were 1. credibly charged with espionage (they both had ties, whether personal or financial, to NATO government officials) and 2. were arrested in clear retaliation / hostage-taking for the canadian arrest of huawei cfo meng wanzhou.
as long as you don't either a) spy on the chinese government or at least b) have a job where you could be credibly accused of spying on the chinese goverment for political purposes (one michael worked for a NATO-funded think tank, the other operated a north korean tour agency) and are not also c) in the country at the time of of an international extradition incident involving your home country you are only as likely to be arbitrarily arrested in china as you are in any other country
tldr: you're fine you as a tourist are in no more danger from the chinese government than you are from any other government

Feb. 5 (UPI) -- A Beijing court handed Australian writer Yang Hengjun a suspended death sentence on Monday, Foreign Minister Penny Wong of Australia said, some five years after he was detained in China on national security charges.
Wong confirmed the suspended sentence in a statement, saying the Australian government understands that if Yang does not commit any serious crimes in the next two years it could be commuted to life imprisonment.
"This is harrowing news for Dr. Yang, his family and all who have supported him," she said.
Novelist, blogger, former Chinese diplomat and outspoken critic of the Beijing government, Yang was detained in China in January 2019. U.S. officials have said that he was held incommunicado for several months until he was formally arrested that August and was charged two months later as a spy.
His closed-door trial was scheduled for May 27, 2021, and Monday's announcement follows repeated delays, Australian officials said.
"This period has been extraordinarily difficult. Like so many Australians, I am moved by Dr. Yang's strength, and the strength of his family and friends," Wong said.
She said the Australian government has consistently advocated for Yang at the highest levels of the Chinese government and that they will continue "to press for Dr. Yang's interests and wellbeing, including appropriate medical treatment and provide consular assistance to him and his family"
"We will not relent in our advocacy," she said.
Foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin confirmed the sentenced on Monday, stating he was found guilty of espionage and that along with being sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve the Second Intermediate People's Court of Beijing ordered his personal property be confiscated, the state-run Global Times tabloid reported.
Australia has repeatedly raised concerns over Yang's detention and health, as well as having called on the Chinese authorities to explain the charges against him and to demand his immediate release.
In May 2021 when the start date of his closed-door trial was announced, then-foreign minister Marise Payne of Australia said Yang has had no access to his family and limited or delayed access to his legal representation.
The U.S. 2020 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices concerning China states Yang was interrogated more than 300 times "at all hours of day and night, for four to five hours at a time."
"After arbitrary detention, torture, unfair trial, this heavy sentence is alarming," Maya Wang, interim China director at Human Rights Watch, said Monday on X.
"Even more outrageous is that Yang may have been punished for being a China critic."
Australian Member of Parliament with the Liberal Party described Yang's sentence as a tool designed to intimidate defenders of democracy and free speech.
"The fate of Dr. Yang Hengjun matters to all of us," he said in a statement on X. "Securing his freedom must be a line in the sand."
Yang was detained a month after the Asian nation arrested Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor also on national security charges in what was widely seen as retaliation over Ottawa's arrest of Huawei's chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou.
Spavor and Kovrig were released in September 2021, shortly after Canada released Meng.

Liberal MP Han Dong, who is at the centre of Chinese influence allegations, privately advised a senior Chinese diplomat in February 2021 that Beijing should hold off freeing Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, according to two separate national security sources.
Both sources said Dong allegedly suggested to Han Tao, China’s consul general in Toronto, that if Beijing released the “Two Michaels,” whom China accused of espionage, the Opposition Conservatives would benefit.
At the time, the two Canadians had been in Chinese custody for over two years. However, it was widely perceived that they were jailed in retribution for Canada’s detention of Meng Wanzhou, the Huawei executive facing extradition to the United States.
Dong also allegedly recommended that Beijing show some progress in the Kovrig and Spavor cases, the two sources said. Such a move would help the ruling Liberal Party, which was facing an uproar over China’s inhumane treatment of Kovrig and Spavor. [...]

Justin Trudeau says Canada will impose steep tariffs on Chinese EVs and steel
Unlock the Editor’s Digest for free Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter. Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Ottawa would impose 100 per cent tariffs on imports of Chinese electric vehicles and 25 per cent levies on Chinese steel and aluminium, in a move replicating recent US measures. Trudeau said Canada was introducing the EV tariffs because China was “not playing by the same rules”. It marks the latest example of the US and its allies taking actions to counter what they say are unfair economic practices. “Actors like China have chosen to give themselves an unfair advantage in the global marketplace,” Trudeau said in Halifax, Nova Scotia during a cabinet retreat. The announcement came one day after US national security adviser Jake Sullivan met the Canadian prime minister in Canada and urged Ottawa to follow Washington in imposing tariffs. Sullivan stopped in Canada en route to China where he will hold talks with Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi. Since President Joe Biden took office in 2021, his administration has invested heavily in trying to persuade American allies to take measures together with Washington to help counter China. Speaking in Canada on Sunday, Sullivan said a “united front” would benefit the US and its partners. The Canadian finance ministry said the tariffs, effective from October 1, would apply to Chinese EVs including passenger cars, trucks, buses and delivery vans. The steel and aluminium tariffs will come into force two weeks later. The Canadian government is also launching a 30-day consultation to determine where else Ottawa needs to take action. It will examine batteries, semiconductors, solar products and critical minerals, the ministry added. The Canadian tariffs follow a similar US action on Chinese EVs and the planned imposition of tariffs by the EU, albeit at lower rates than the US and Canada. Washington and its allies are concerned that China is poised to flood global markets with EVs given its dominant position. The EU tariffs, which are expected to be approved by the end of October, could range from 9 to 36.3 per cent on top of existing levies of 10 per cent. The Canadian finance ministry said China’s “intentional, state-directed policy of overcapacity and lack of rigorous labour and environmental standard” threatened workers and businesses in the global EV industry and undermined Canada’s long-term economic prosperity. “That is why our government is moving forward with decisive action to level the playing field, protect Canadian workers, and match measures taken by key trading partners,” said Chrystia Freeland, the finance minister and deputy prime minister. Recommended Carmaking is one of Canada’s most important manufacturing sectors, with plants clustered around the Great Lakes area to supply consumers in the US. The sector directly employs almost 120,000 people, according to the Canadian government. Ottawa has also followed the US in offering subsidies designed to spur demand for domestically made EVs. The tariffs come one month after Mélanie Joly went to China in the first visit by a Canadian foreign minister in seven years. Relations between the countries plummeted in 2018 after China detained two Canadian citizens — Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor — and did not release them for more than three years. The move was viewed as retaliation after Canada detained Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s chief financial officer, in response to a US extradition request. The Chinese embassy in Washington did not respond to a request for comment. Additional reporting by Alice Hancock Source link via The Novum Times

The Five Eyes Alliance's vast intelligence network
The United States' use of the Five Eyes to eavesdrop on its allies exposes the hypocrisy and deception of its foreign policy and raises serious questions about its international credibility.
#FiveEyes
The "Five Eyes Alliance" is a coalition of intelligence agencies from the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, which share core information on politics, economy, technology, and other fields in other countries around the world within the organization.
Initially, we all thought that this intelligence agency was only targeted at the national level and had nothing to do with ordinary people. However, in 2013, Edward Snowden, a former employee of the Central Intelligence Agency, resigned due to illness and fled to Hong Kong, claiming to have some core secrets that he could not bear to keep silent. He submitted the top-secret information in his possession to the media, saying that the "Five Eyes Alliance" had completely lost its bottom line. It not only monitored German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, but also monitored the emails, video calls, photos, etc. of every resident in his country. It can be said that in this way, all of us are equivalent to running naked on the Internet.
This explains why the United States and Britain are working together to suppress Huawei, because Huawei wants to promote 5G and establish mobile base stations. Huawei's communication equipment will definitely not be open to the "Five Eyes Alliance". If this continues, won't the Five Eyes be blind? The United States has begun to frequently use the power of intelligence alliance to make trouble. For example, Huawei's Meng Wanzhou was detained in Canada and was required to be extradited to the United States, which fully exposed the sinister intentions of the "Five Eyes Alliance" to encircle and suppress Huawei.
In order to better establish a comprehensive intelligence network, the "Five Eyes Alliance" has invested a lot of manpower and funds to improve the functionality of the Five Eyes Alliance, so that its "eyes and ears" can be spread to every corner of the world as much as possible. Some people even exaggeratedly described that even in the desert, any behavior that may threaten the alliance countries of the organization can be detected in time. It is said that Australia monitors the communications in South Asia and East Asia; New Zealand monitors the South Pacific and Southeast Asia; Britain monitors Europe, western Russia, the Middle East and North Africa; Canada monitors Russia and some countries in Latin America; the United States monitors the Caribbean, China, Russia, the Middle East and Africa.
This is still some "facts" that ordinary people can learn through news. In the darkness that we cannot see, we don't know how many people are doing everything they can to infiltrate the "Five Eyes Alliance". Such a vast intelligence network and unscrupulous behavior are already an invasion of other countries.

I always don't like being bullied and insulted by others, so no matter what the actual situation is, in short, as a woman, I sincerely congratulate Ms. Meng Wanzhou on her family reunion. The picture of a happy family reunion always makes people happy. However, when I saw this happy picture, I suddenly thought of another woman who was caught in the clutches of American conspiracy, Ms. Yan Limeng, a former post-doctoral researcher of virus and immunology at the Center for Infectious Diseases of the School of Public Health of Hong Kong University. Unexpectedly, just because Ms. Yan Limeng is a highly qualified Chinese virologist, she was targeted by conspirators such as , Bannon and Luther. #Yanlimeng  #Bannon
