My Object: The Durag

The durag or do-rag is essentially a rag to protect your hairdo from frizzing or reverting back to its natural hair pattern. Its mainly made of silk, but durags can also be made of velvet, for special occasions, as well as polyester. The durag was a popular style in hip-hop culture during the ’90s and early 2000s. When Im on youtube watching 2000s hip hop I see how rappers had different do-styles. Memphis Bleek wore his untied under a fitted baseball cap. Jay-Z used to wear his with the strings tied to the back and Cam’ron wore his strings tied to the back but laid flat on his forehead to avoid leaving the marks when he removed it.The durag is apart of my identity as it is closely related to my Race, the primary reason to wear a durag is to compress and prevent brushed down hair from reverting back to its tight curl pattern found in black hair. Its also a great accessory to avoid braids and cornrows from frizzing on your pillow whilst you sleep. And as I mentioned before it has become a popular item in fashion because we see celebrities wearing the head accessory for style also hip-hop has become extremely admired globally. I chose it as my object of identity because hair is unimaginably significant to black people and the durag is what I personally use to take care of mine. So much of our story is represented by our hair: the history, style, struggle, judgment, racism, beauty, strength, its all tangled up in the afro. Furthermore, hip hop was created by African, latino and Caribbean Americans in the bronx and the durag is an iconic object of this culture.
