These are the back cover comments (in full):
‘Collectively, the poems in Santa Lucía evoke a wry and inquisitive travelogue, voicing the experiences and observations of a British expat in Southern Spain. In poems that bear hints of Ashbery, and the poeticised musings of Cioran and Camus, Baylis weighs mortality, commerce and connection against their ability to provide meaning in the face of “an emptiness that goes on forever” (‘tropical storm’). Here, in the midst of moral anguish, seaside tranquillity is only a line break away: “the chameleon twitches on the cross/ in the harbour” (‘tropical storm’). And despite the dankness of “the city [that] is no longer real”, the central speaker briefly finds euphoric versions of themselves in “bar s of morning light” (‘xyla’) and “[getting] high/ smoke ghosting over graveyards” (‘cultural centre’). Throughout Santa Lucía, Baylis demonstrates a considerable breadth of thought, an adventurous approach to syntax, and a flair for thematic and linguistic echoes, which ultimately result in a sincere and incisive pamphlet.’
Isabelle Baafi
'Santa Lucia is a surrealist cultural vision of a world where giggling dolphins and despotic moths intermingle. Charlie Baylis' poetry is alive with the music of absurdity, and awake to the poetic subtleties of life. An outstanding pamphlet.’
Aaron Kent
‘In this hypnotising and arresting pamphlet, Charlie Baylis gives us poems which transport us to Santa Lucia, where we are encapsulated by a vivid and various life. With chameleons, Elvis Presley, apricot lakes and an existential questioning which permeates throughout, these poems have a restless quality, taking us into moments as they happen. Santa Lucia is divided into two parts, day and night, surprising and delighting in their dream-like quality while maintaining their lucidity. Often reminiscent of Frank O’Hara’s lyric, Baylis is a poet whose agile language makes this pamphlet worth returning to multiple times, if not just to revisit the ‘ballerina pirouetting with a rhino’ and ‘death performing savage miracles’.’
