About a year ago, I decided to ask the question of “Who was the best Type-Moon couple?” After asking you all the same question, the consensus was that the title belonged to the oldest enemies-to-lovers story that we currently have on record.

But it’s been a year, new stories appeared, new couples appeared, and old couple either reentered the spotlight or were strengthened. All of this culminating to the point where I have asked you all again, “who is the best Type-Moon couple?”

Ladies, gentlemen, and all in between…

Welcome back to THE BEST TYPE-MOON COUPLE TOURNAMENT!

I’m your host/mod @player-blandon, and let me welcome you all back to this little tournament of mine (and welcome anyone stumbling into this for the first time).

Rules about submissions for this tournament will be below the cut, but it’s mostly going to be the same as the last time (and hopefully cleaned up more).

As an extra note, I will not be including previous victors, Gilgamesh and Enkidu, a spot on this tournament this year. They can be submitted separately, but I’m not letting them compete again since I want other couples to show off what they can do (don’t worry, they’re commemorated by being in the header and given first class seats for the tournament).

You have until the end of October (October 31st/Halloween) to submit couples for this tournament. If you have any questions, please be sure to ask any questions so I can address them. Be sure to read the rules!

Now, let’s get start for our second tournament!

Alright, let’s start with the baseline:

The couple must be included in a Type-Moon work! (Duh, it’s in the name of the tournament. As long as it was made/published by/associated with Type-Moon or has their logo on it, then it’s fine. Such things obviously include: Fate, Tsukihime, Garden of Sinners, Witch on the Holy Night, Canaan, etc.)

No minors! (I’m not including children, not even if they’re being paired with other children. Characters like Fate/Stay Night Illya will have their own poll to determine if they’re truly a child should the need arise.)

No siblings/family members! (Step-siblings are fine enough for this competition if the story backs them (cough cough, Shiki/Akiha, cough cough) I’m not including actual incest. If you submit baseless incest with no signs of it being ok’d in the story, then they’re disqualified.)

Don’t be weird. (An extension of the last two, but I need to make myself clear here. Don’t be weird, don’t be gross, and have common sense. Just because I didn’t mention something here, doesn’t mean it’s ok. This is supposed to be lighthearted and fun and I don’t want any entries that were made to make people angry or uncomfortable. This is a place where people can gush over their favorite ships, talk about them, and pit them against other ships in a nice and casual way. I want this place to be a safe space for that kind of behavior.)

Make sure that the canon supports the pairing. (Obviously actual couples are the main focus in this tournament, but if there’s more than abundant proof that a pairing can be/is a couple then that’ll be fine too. As long as it can be proved beyond a reasonable doubt and the narrative supports it, I’ll let it into the tournament. Unfortunately, this means that crack ships or ships with basically no evidence from the story can't participate in this tournament. Sorry.)

Promotions and propaganda are allowed and encouraged! (Just be respectful when telling others why your favorite pair should win. We’re here to have fun, after all.)

Rules can/will be added/changed if needed. (Obviously I want to avoid changing/adding rules as much as possible, but I’m only human and I lack foresight and can’t account for everything. Changes will be announced when it happens and if they do happen then I’m sorry in advance.)

Now, onto the qualifications of this tournament:

Must be an actual relationship in the story where both sides acknowledge and reciprocates the other’s feelings. (Of course, there’s some leeway when it comes to this, but as long as it’s consensual, meets the qualifications, and doesn’t violate any rules, then it’s fine.)

Please only go for a 1-on-1 pairing. (Having more than one spouse is cool and all, but I can’t include everyone since it’ll be time consuming, too much work, and ultimately, isn’t really fair. If someone does have more than one potential pairing, please submit them separately.)

If a relationship can only be within a pairing and it’s works within the story/is fine, then I’ll include it. (Follow up on the previous, but it’s what’s said on the tin. I didn’t get anything like that last time and I don’t recall anything fitting the bill, but just in case.)

Limit your entry to Type-Moon. (This rule mostly applies to servants, but it’ll be difficult to include every single spouse someone has and wouldn’t be worth it if they’re not acknowledged/represented in Type-Moon. I’ll try my best to include those who are mentioned but haven’t been seen, but I’m not a miracle worker.)

No previous winners. (Sorry Gil and Enkidu fans, they had their turn, time to shine some light on some other couples.)

Must be between at least two conscience beings. (To the person who submitted Saber x Shirou’s cooking, I saw your submission. I’m sorry. I thought about it, but ultimately decided against it. I hope one day you’ll forgive me.)

Examples of what does and doesn’t work:

Not Allowed:

Shiki x Arcueid x Ciel (More than one pairing.)

Caeser x Morgan (While mentioned, nothing within any story acknowledges this as an actual pairing.)

Medea x Aegeus (While there’s an interpretation where Medea is Theseus’ stepmother, which would make her married to his father, Medea never mentions this at all and Theseus isn’t even sure of it himself, meaning that it can’t be included.)

Robin Hood x Maid Marian (Outside of the reason above and the Robin Hood we know isn’t the same one as the story, Maid Marian doesn’t have a sprite associated with her, so I don’t know how to represent her.)

Gilgamesh x Enkidu (Specifically them, I’m not including previous winners.)

Allowed:

Shiki x Arcueid, Shiki x Ciel, Arcueid x Ciel (All of these work on their own. Submit more than one per message, it’s fine.)

Caeser x Cleopatra (Even with their wonky relationship, as long as they’re shown loving each other, it works.)

Jason x Medea (An example of a “read between the lines” relationship. As long as they’re proof that there’s something between them, then I’m fine allowing it.)

Gilgamesh x Enkidu (Can’t be submitted, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t the textbook example I’m using for “They’re arguably a couple”.

Gilgamesh x Kirei, Gilgamesh x Hakuno (Just because he was part of the winning pair last time, doesn’t mean he can’t enter again with someone else.)

Bradamante x Ruggerio (Despite not fully appearing in anything Type-Moon related, he was represented by the generic Saber sprite, so that’s how he’ll be represented here.)

When submitting, please include the following:

Full Names (Optional, just let them be identifiable.)

Work of Origin (Doesn’t have to be all, just whatever you associate them with/what they’ve appeared in. Please include for both.)

Examples:

Shirou Emiya x Sakura Matou (Fate/Stay Night)

Akiha Tohno x Kohaku (Tsukihime)

Hibiki x Chikagi (Magician’s Box)

Remember, if you’re not sure if your suggestion qualifies, send them in anyways. The worst is that I simply don’t include it.

About Phonon:

Has a special interest in writing and the supernatural.

Wears her headphones whenever she can to not only filter out noise but to make it so people won't talk to her if she doesn't need them to.

Sees social norms as dumb and refuses to follow them.

Hates lying and is very bad at it.

Tried to put on a more social and haughty act in her Arcade Mode, but completely dropped it the moment she was alone.
