question for the squad: juiciest piece of gossip and/or darkest secret you know about each other?
ooh, I like this one. lemme think...
// Say what now? "Darkest secrets"? Oh RA, don't ask Slipshod that-
oh, perfect timing! you all know how Phoenix says she's off on PR business, yeah? whenever she says that, there's a flat 50/50 chance that she's either actually doing PR work or she's going to take a smoke break. very convenient excuse, that one
// Wha- hey! That was supposed to stay between us!
too late! >:P I've got one for Kennedi too, while I'm at it - she still has one of her old HA uniforms tucked away in the back of her closet. has all of her old colonial legionnaire badges and medals and shit on it. not sure why she ever kept it, since she's staunchly anti-HA nowadays, but it's there, and it's not nearly as well hidden as she thi-
> Ahem. What did I just walk in on, exactly?
ah. shit. hi K. let's pretend you didn't hear the last ten seconds of that conversation, yeah?
// We got a prompt asking us for the darkest secrets we know about each other. Slipshod was just sharing one of yours.
> Is that what's going on now. That would explain the mention of my HA uniform - which, by the way, is my property. If I find so much as a crease on the lapel because of your snooping, I'm locking you out of the mech hangar for a month. Understood?
...yes, ma'am. (er, I think you're up next, P)
// Oh, lovely. I'll start with Kennedi, since this one's practically an open secret around here - she's utterly hopeless with melee weapons. Couldn't swing an axe to save her life. If she doesn't have a gun of some sort, then she's fucked in combat outside of a mech.
can confirm. saw her try to parry while sparring with one of the trainers once; she wound up pinned against the wall. kinda pathetic to watch, really
> Hmph. Unfortunate, but true. I was hoping my prosthetic might offer some chance of improvement in that regard, but it appears that I was sorely mistaken. I am no better at melee combat now than I was with both arms fully intact.
// As for Slipshod... oh, here's one. I recently found their shower supplies lying around in the shower (instead of in their assigned cubby, where it should be), and discovered that they use a men's 3-in-1 product, instead of separate shampoo and conditioner like a sane human being. No wonder your hair is such a frizzy disaster.
aw, come on, P, you didn't have to do me dirty like that! yours wasn't even that bad!
// That's not even the worst part! It smells awful, too! If using a shitty men's 3-in-1 is more gender-affirming for you, fine, I get it, but Christ-the-Buddha almighty, why does it have to smell so bad?!
hey, I think it smells fine. all of the women's hair products available around here smell like rancid perfume. find me a women's shampoo and conditioner set that smells like cedar or bourbon or pine or some shit like that and I'll happily switch
> Why anyone would want to smell like bourbon of all things is beyond me. (Then again, I suppose anything beats the smell of motor oil and reactor coolant.)
RUDE! I happen to like the smell of motor oil, thank you very much >:(
> Trust me, I'm well aware. I suppose it's my turn, then?
// Give us your worst, I guess. Slipshod already outed my smoke break habits. Prick.
> Hm. Let's see... I suppose the darkest secret I know of Phoenix's is that she dropped out of IPS-N cadet school for the express purpose of joining MSMC. I don't believe she's publicly mentioned it on here, at any rate.
// Hey now; I didn't drop out, I never finished my application process in the first place. There's a big difference!
you were gonna sign on with IPS-N? really?
// Look, I was young and stupid back then, and the propaganda adbroads they constantly blared all over Pyxis were... compelling. I don't regret that decision, though. MSMC is leagues better than anything IPS-N could ever hope to offer me.
> A wise decision. If only I had your caliber of foresight when choosing my future as a young pilot.
yeah, yeah, don't you two get all sentimental on me now. K's still gotta roast me. bring it on - surely you don't have anything better than P
> Oh, really. How's this, then: since my arrival on MSMC-796 twelve years ago, Slipshod has had no less than fifteen different romantic partners of various genders, none of which have lasted in a relationship with them for longer than six months.
// FIFTEEN?!?! Is that why you had "welcome home cheater" graffiti'd on your Toku a while back?! You told me that was because you robbed someone of a kill!
wha- i- you bitch! why the fuck would you keep track of that?! what are you, a stalker or some shit???
> No; I'm your squadron commander. And it's my job to know what my squadmates are getting up to when I hear obnoxiously loud moaning noises coming from their bunk at 3 in the morning.
// Holy shit, Slipshod. I don't even know what to say to this. Fifteen partners in twelve years... Christ-the-Buddha almighty. That takes the fuckin' cake. Congrats, Kennedi.
> Thank you, Phoenix. Now, are we done here?
// Yes. Please.
HEY! get back here! explain yourself, you conniving bitch!!! KENNEDI!!!!!

First Impressions/Review - Horizon: Forbidden West
First, a tech issue. I had to apparently set the game to compatibility mode for Windows 8 in order for this game to function without crashing between ten minutes to an hour (or sometimes instantly) due to some memory leak error issue. Just wanted to mention that in case my review catches some Google searches.
Tumblr media
Once again my review is roughly three years late, given I am playing the PC release. Some grander spoilers may already be known just through cultural osmosis, but I won't spend too much time talking about the story. It takes place somewhat immediately after the first game, within a few months. Aloy takes off almost immediately during the victory party from the first game as she's become privy to new information in short order: The terraforming system of the planet has gone haywire and the environment is becoming as deranged as the machines from the first game. It is Aloy's job to figure out why.
To wit, this game is very heavy on the "As You Know" ways of storytelling. "As you know' is in quoted verbatim by a character shortly after the prologue sequence. There's a lot of that as you explore dialog trees with your companions. I urge any players to just go ahead and play the first game. The general gameplay loop is very similar and beyond some janky face animations, Zero Dawn is a fine game on its own.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile its sequel improves upon many aspects. Everything that worked, still works. The game is largely stealth-reliant as you hide in tall grass and snipe out some machine parts before they begin to notice you. Though many outfits in this game heavily rely on "lower health" statuses, a lot of them based around having half to thirty percent health which caters to folks that prefer the hack and slash melee. They'll do well here, with the right armor you will get a hefty dose of damage reduction. Frankly, I prefer to sneak around in the shadows and have half a machine's health half gone before they're even fully alerted. There's tricks for that as well, as the outfits in FW are significantly more nuanced. There's a late-game armor that adds more than one bonus to Concentration (slowing down time to give you a proper aim) and I have great joy sniping parts from the distance before a machine can turn towards me properly.
Tumblr media
Speaking of equipment, that is expanded on greatly here. For good and for ill. It runs into the Sniper Elite issue of some sequels adding all manner of tools but other than laying down mines against vehicles, nothing really beats just sniping someone through a window. The same problem presents itself here. I still utilize the tripwire weapons to essentially protect myself from patrols as I begin my sniping spree, but the game introduces too many weapons that I haven't wasted much time trying to learn. We have some melee slicers that require timing to function. We get something that's essentially a machinegun (the projectiles are just wood instead), with a power move that lets you lay down the entire set of 30 shots within just a couple of seconds. In theory it's great damage but a large majority of machines seem to be far too agile for it to have been any use. Even the human enemies come with helmets you must snipe off first, making it impossible to go full stealth archer and pick off sentries before moving into the camps.
All these extra tools and nothing really compares to my trusty Hunter's Bow. Ammunition is cheap to produce, it aims quickly, has an ever-useful 2-3 arrow knock power, and does sufficient damage even on Hard difficulty. All in all, it just does what I need it to do and rarely find myself switching to any other weapon except to lay down some tripwires, and occasionally switching to the Sharpshooter bow for the very rare exception. Yet, I don't feel that it bloats the game too much as I'm sure many players will find some joy in trying to master the more fickle weaponry. And hey, they gave us six slots instead of four to encourage that very thing. So, kudos.
Tumblr media
I needn't waste too much time on this fact but the game continues to be gorgeous. I'm an absolute sucker for weather conditions so all the rain, snow, and sandstorms throughout the game's various biomes just gives me a sense of comfort and immersion that I usually have to mod into my other open world games.
The map being dotted with icons is not the typical and tired Ubi-like fare. Most of the map icons are just sites for machines to assist you in your hunts when upgrading your gear, and generally just give you something to run into as you're traversing the world. You run into the occasional collection quest, like black boxes from Old World jets. They tend to lead to something tangible, like a new weapon, outfit, or some cosmetic face paint. It's usually something more concrete than "here's seven more old world watches to sell to a vendor".
Speaking of vendoring. There's a couple of aspects that I don't care fore, which kind of ties into the gear expansion. There's more on the ground to grab as there's a whole food mechanic I've yet to bother engaging with because I can't be bothered. I've picked up more peppers and basil than I care to say. Maybe it'll all be there for me in a NG+.
Tumblr media
Secondly I'm getting rather tired of picking up watches and gold ingots out of treasure chests. It turns into something akin to busywork. Imagine if they just replaced all junk items with the game's main currency (metal shards), literally nothing would be lost in translation. It's just several extra buttons to press in a menu when you visit a town.
Still, I find the gameplay loop here comforting. I like running around and finding the Tallnecks to open my map up. I enjoy the very well paced power creep over time. I have eventually noticed that machines I used to be scared of in the first few hours, become barely a challenge at all a few hours later as their health drops halfway just because I shot off a couple of their tusks. So even with a goal in mind, I like veering off the path when I see a new machine icon because it inevitably has something I need to upgrade my weapon or outfit proper. Meeting new machines is intimidating but with the game's new 'job' system, you can make a custom quest and help you track where specific machines are, go get the items, and upgrade. It's a useful tool so you don't spend any time alt-tabbing, wondering where the hell a Clawstrider is. The game itself has a function to just tell you!
Tumblr media
Sometimes I write reviews where it's two paragraphs of good followed by seven of bad with me just stating "the game is good though, trust me". That problem is not present here. I nitpick a bit about equipment I'm not familiar with and don't use and the ever-present annoyance of menu busywork when selling trash items. That's almost completely it in terms of nitpicks, as I continue to enjoy every other aspect of the game.
And if you liked the first, you will like this one as well.

An Indecent Proposal-Chapter 6
A03, Prologue, Chapter 1,Chapter 2,Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5
Daemon x Rhaenyra Multichapter AU:
Daemon leaves Rhaenyra at her wedding feast. Rhaenyra marries Laenor. After a year of trying to do their duty and produce an heir, Rhaenyra writes to Daemon.
She needs a true Targaryen heir.
It only needs to be an arrangement of business, she says. And it would result in Daemon’s child one day taking the Iron Throne.
Daemon accepts the proposal and returns to court.
Only, ventures like these are never simple. As much as they would wish to, Daemon and Rhaenyra cannot let go of the past, or the feelings they once had for each other.
A/N: The muse is being extra productive! So consider this the "episode 6" of this story. Though not a ten year time jump, we are entering a new phase of the story.
Also, I never have directly addressed this, because I didn't consider it really when I thought of the premise of this story. However, I have received several questions from readers, so I decided to stick with following the book that the Velaryons resemble the Targaryens. I understand why Condal made his decisions, to highlight the fact that the Velaryon kids were clearly not Laenor's but I like the book approach better, where it focuses on the hair and the eye color. If anyone is unhappy with this choice, I apologize, but it makes more sense to me to follow the book in this regard.
I hope you guys enjoy this next installment.
Rhaenyra’s head was pounding and Lord Beesbury’s droning about the Crown’s budget was not helping matters.
Daemon sat beside her at the small council table, feigning rapt attention to his colleague’s words. All while his hand stroked lazy circles along her inner thigh beneath the table. Rhaenyra did not have the heart to stop this advance, as it was the only thing keeping her sane at the moment.
Daemon did this often, skirting the boundaries and rules of their arrangement. Ever since the night of the melee he had been wearing down her resistance little by little. They had made love each night, sometimes clothed sometimes not. He never spent the night in her bed though. That was a line she was still unwilling to cross.
At feasts, he danced with her, when Laenor would not. He made mockery of the Greens, whispering absurdities in her ear when no one was looking.
Laenor carried on with Qarl at night, while Daemon visited her chambers in secret. In public, she and Laenor presented a united front. He had taken his father’s position on the council as Master of Ships.
At last, Rhaenyra had council members on her side. Not only that, but Daemon and network of spies were working to uncover secrets about Alicent and Otto Hightower that would give them grounds to force Viserys to expel them. They had yet to confirm the rumors that Alicent was having an affair with Ser Criston Cole, but she was certain that in time, the Hightowers would make a crucial mistake and expose themselves.
Ser Harwin Strong, was yet another friendly face in court, though more often than not he was mooning over Laena. They were not courting officially, but Rhaenyra was certain that in time they would be betrothed.
“Prince Aegon has demanded a dragon,” Otto Hightower said, bringing this issue to the small council for the third time. “And yet, the keepers refuse to give him a new egg to replace the one that failed to hatch. This is unacceptable.”
“The dragon keepers are loyal to Targaryens, not to Hightower half breeds,” Daemon said.
The enmity between Daemon and the Hand had only grown in the past three months.
“Your Grace, surely you want your first born son to have a dragon. Speak to them on our son’s behalf.”
Rhaenyra sighed. It was because of Alicent that the dragons were forbidden to leave the dragon pit. Naturally this did nothing to curry favor with the dragon keepers.
Viserys sighed. “Alicent, if Aegon was meant to have a dragon, his egg would have hatched.”
“How can you say such a thing when your own brother’s egg failed to hatch?” Otto fumed. “This is yet another maneuver to lessen Aegon in the eyes of Seven Kingdoms.”
“My Lord Hand, the gods have made it clear. Aegon is not destined for a dragon. I do not see why you continue to harp on this matter. He is not the heir.”
It was not often Rhaenyra so appreciated Lord Lyman Beesbury, especially when she had been cursing his very name only minutes ago.
Alicent opened her mouth to argue, but Viserys spoke instead. “There is little use in continuing the matter. Let us move on to other business. Ser Laenor, how fares the situation in the Stepstones?”
My father’s fleet continues to defend our holdings, Your Grace, and the garrison and watch towers are nearly complete. When that is done, most of my father’s fleet will return to Driftmark.”
“Excellent,” Viserys said. “Lord Beesbury. I trust you have secured the rest of the funds to complete this project.”
“Aye, Your Grace,” said Lord Beesbury. And so he began another droning speech about the finances of the Crown. Daemon’s hand continued its progress, and Rhaenyra bit back a moan, glowering at Daemon, who only winked at her. She looked to Laenor for help, but he seemed to know what was happening beneath the table and found it highly amusing. Rhaenyra sometimes wondered if Laenor was encouraging Daemon’s antics.
Suddenly, Rhaenyra was overcome with the urge to vomit. She rose and begged to be excused. Her father waved her away and she hastened from the small council chamber, well aware of the suspicious glares of Alicent and Otto Hightower.
She ran to the privy and vomited into a copper chamber pot. Could this mean in had happened at last?
Rhaenyra had not had her courses in over two months, but she would not believe it until confirmed by a maester.
As she emerged from the privy, Rhaenyra saw Laena walking arm in arm with Ser Harwin. Ser Harwin bowed as Laena gave a friendly greeting. “Good morrow, Rhaenyra. It is a beautiful day.”
In fact, it was drizzling and quite cloudy, but Rhaenyra supposed every day seemed beautiful in the throes of new love.
Rhaenyra returned her friend’s sunny smile, but was still feeling quite light headed.
Ser Harwin placed a gentle hand on her arm. “Princess, are you quite well?”
“Ser Harwin, might I ask a favor of you?”
“Of course, Princess.”
“I would steal Lady Laena from you and ask that you fetch Grand Maester Mellos and escort him to my chambers.”
Ser Harwin nodded. “Of course, Princess,” he said, bowing and hurrying back towards the small council room.
Laena supported Rhaenyra’s right side. “Now I am truly concerned, Rhaenyra. You are quite pale.”
“We can speak in my chambers, Laena,” Rhaenyra said, her voice low.
When they reached Rhaenyra’s chambers, Laena helped her to the settee and fetched a chamber pot in case she grew nauseous again.
“Now will you tell me what ails you?” Laena asked.
“My courses have yet to come these past two moons,” Rhaenyra said. “It is why I wanted to see the maester.”
Laena barely held in a squeal of excitement. “If true, what a marvelous blessing. Daemon will be thrilled.”
“Will he? I am not so certain.”
It was the point of their entire arrangement. But in truth Daemon was more of a lover than Rhaenyra ever intended for him to become. He doted on her in private, when she allowed it, and in public, he rallied the lords and people of Westeros to her side. He had even convinced the dragon keepers to withhold dragon eggs from Alicent’s children. Syrax had laid a fresh clutch a fortnight ago, three beautiful eggs.
Queen Alicent was sure the eggs were meant for Aegon, Helaena, and Aemond. Yet, she had been denied them because of Daemon’s careful maneuvering and well-placed gold.
“Why would you say that?” Laena asked.
“The child will be Daemon’s but he will be unable to raise it. That honor will fall to Laenor.”
“Daemon knew what he was agreeing to when he came to King’s Landing,” Laena said. “He will be pleased to have served his future queen. The question is, what will you do if you truly are with child? Will you end your affair?”
The thought of losing Daemon’s nightly visits was deeply distressing. It had been as she feared. Every time he had made love to her, she had lost more of her heart to him, and she knew now that she would never recover it.
“It depends, I suppose, on the child. I need a male heir.”
Laena raised a brow. “It that all it depends upon, Rhaenyra?”
Fortunately, Rhaenyra was spared the trouble of answering her question with the arrival of Grand Maester Mellos.
It only took him a quarter of an hour to finish his assessment and confirm that she was indeed with child. “Nearly three moons, I would say. May I be the first to offer my congratulations and the hope that you are blessed with a son.”
“Thank you, Grand Maester,” Rhaenyra said. The Grand Maester was politically neutral and sought only stability of the Realm, and whether Rhaenyra liked it or not, a son would solidify her claim. Though in truth, she only wanted the babe to be healthy. She only wanted them both to survive the birthing bed.
Grand Maester Mellos departed, eager to inform the king, while Rhaenyra dispatched Laena to find Daemon as he trained in the yard, which he often did after council meetings. During the day, Rhaenyra found it easier to send messages to Daemon through Laena or Laenor. No one questioned Daemon’s close association with his Velaryon cousins, for even his rivals knew of his devotion to his kin.
Rhaenyra stroked her abdomen, wondering if the child was a girl or a boy. If a girl, she would name her Alyssa, for her grandmother. Alyssa could also be found on the Velaryon side, so it could not raise too much suspicion. For a boy, Jacaerys, a strong Valyrian name.
If her first born was a girl, she and Daemon would have to keep trying, but if she had a son, it would be practical to end their arrangement. Though Daemon had said one evening that she would need and heir and a spare to match the Hightowers and their filthy half breeds.
He was right, and so Rhaenyra rested as she waited for Daemon to come to her. She wanted him to know before she told Laenor. Laenor would be the child’s father in public, but in private, Daemon was owed this courtesy.
Daemon arrived quickly, panting slightly. He sat beside her, taking her hand in his. “Are you quite well, Rhaenyra? I worried for you when you fled the council meeting. The Hightower bitch had the nerve to linger after the meeting ended and petition Viserys for the rights to Syrax’s eggs.
“I trust she was denied,” Rhaenyra said.
“She was, much to her fury. My brother can sometimes be a fool, but his belief in fate has its uses.”
Rhaenyra laughed. It had not taken much to convince Viserys that Aegon’s egg growing cold meant the boy was not destined for dragon riding. And when the same happened to Helaena and Aemond, this belief was cemented. Viserys was assured that he had made the right decision in keeping Rhaenyra as his heir.
Viserys was unused to Daemon’s overt support. They had often been at odds since his coronation, and now that this had changed, he had come to rely upon his brother nearly as much as he did Otto.
“Alicent’s children are not true dragons. They do not deserve Syrax’s eggs, but I do believe we will soon have a use for one of them.”
Daemon gaped at her, his hand moving to caress her abdomen. “You are with child?”
Rhaenyra nodded. “Grand Maester Mellos just confirmed it. I hope you are not displeased.”
In answer, Daemon kissed her hard. “Far from displeased. In fact, I mean to celebrate the coming of our child this very moment.”
Rhaenyra shook her head. “We cannot. Mellos has gone to Father with the news. I am certain he will soon make an appearance. And Laenor, he will of course need to be informed.”
Daemon’s face darkened at this, but he did not protest. Instead, he pressed his forehead against her abdomen and whispered in High Valyrian. “Little Dragon, though I will not always be with you, rest assured that I love you even now, and will for the rest of my days.”
Rhaenyra felt tears gather in the corners of her eyes. “Daemon,” she said. “The world will believe my child to be Laenor’s, but you and I will know the truth.”
Daemon nodded. “It is enough that I will have a child,” Daemon said. “History does not remember blood. It remembers names, and when our son climbs the steps of the Iron Throne, he will bear our name.”
There was a pounding on the door, and Daemon quickly slipped behind the tapestry before Rhaenyra called for her visitor to enter. Viserys and Laenor entered, both looking overjoyed.
***
Daemon listened to Viserys and Laenor offer their congratulations for a few minutes before making use of the passageway. He took a path to the dragon pit, treading the path that Maegor the Cruel had built for an efficient escape.
Daemon needed to ensure the eggs were well guarded. The Hightowers were determined to have them, he knew, and though Daemon was sure of the dragon keepers’ loyalty, he wanted to have the eggs moved to a more secure location until Rhaenyra delivered their first child.
The dragon keepers greeted him with somber expressions. “Prince Daemon, how can we serve you?” This was spoken by the eldest of the dragon keepers, a man with a withered face, a stern brow, and shining burn marks decorating his still well-muscled arms. Dragon keeping was no easy task.
“I am here to retrieve the eggs Syrax laid. I understand Otto Hightower has been sniffing around here.”
“Aye, my Prince, but our loyalty belongs to the Targaryens.”
“Good. Princess Rhaenyra is pregnant, and she will soon be in need of the eggs. I need to keep them in a secret location until they are needed.”
“We have a secret chamber in the dragon pit, my prince. The entrance is well hidden. We will have a keeper on guard at all hours. Will that suffice?”
“For now,” Daemon said, handing the keeper a pouch of gold. “If anything happens to those eggs, it will be you who pays the price.”
“Understood, my Prince. They will be safe.”
Daemon did not leave the pit until he saw the eggs locked away for himself.
Then he slipped from the dragon pit. He was in need of cheap ale, and though his days of sampling the local whores were past him, the brothels on the Street of Silk still appreciated his patronage. Furthermore, it allowed him to gauge the public opinion about Rhaenyra, and silence anyone who would speak against her.
Daemon did not notice the spy, standing in the shadows near the dragon pit. The spy pulled the hood of his cloak further down and made his way to the Red Keep.

hi yes hello I'm having thoughts about Aresiba/Rhemi's body image and sexuality and I. wanna word dump for a minute
Siba's always been kinda paradoxical, a little bit of an oxymoron at face value, and nothing quite encaptures that, like how she perceives her body. Despite EVERYTHING-- the trainings, always being active, and making efforts to eat well-- she's still a bit of a chubby/fat girlie. Still has the upper arm flab, still has a tummy (even if it doesn't protrude out like crazy, it's still Wide and Very Much there), still has thicker thighs and not from the legwork she does (has v shapley legs tho), still has a more rounded face/overall soft body yk. And this has bothered her for YEARS-- way before she became the WOL or her parents passing. Like with all the work she does, shouldn't she be more fit?? more toned??? why does she have to go through herculean lengths to obtain a body that shows all the work she does????? it's frustrating. And it doesn't help when people start associating you with that, and they start assuming your skills etc based off of that.
Aresiba is a warrior, but never gives off thw appearance of one, and it drives her insane.
This eased up when she started becomes more BRD focused and less melee-only focused, but NOW every outfit is meticulously curated to look at good as possible on her. Yes, you'll see her fatter arms, or her thicker thighs, or even her stomach sometimes-- but never in an unflattering light. She has herself pinned up to the nines as the Wol bc she has an image to uphold. And idea that people pray to, they look up to, they seek guidance from, they find solace in. And if She's going to be that symbol for them, the least she can do is present herself in the beat light/way possible. Giving this like, very much storybook/fairytale air to her role, as if she's like a heroine from a book/a song.
So while she's found new ways to accept her body, she's had to barge her way thru dismantling them, but then also slowly building herself back up after, to learn that it's Okay to exist and not be 100% perfect. That it's okay if others don't like you or don't approve of how you look. Especially now, when the world has been saved from the brink and you don't have to be That Warrior anymore. You can be yourself-- an adventurer, free as the wind that carries you.
Its... a hard habit to break, but she's doing so. slowly. stutteringly, at times, but surely.
THAT ALL BEING SAID, It plays into Aresiba's sexuality aswell, bc she's Demi/bi. Gender/gender presentation isn't a big thing to her, but yalls connection is. There's no WAY she's going to do anything with you if there's no connection there, if she doesn't/trust/ you. And it does come in a spectrum, a little bit. Like, she's had flings and has DEFINETLY fucked before (remember, she can pull Bitches, but she cant seem to keep Bitches), but has never done so fully naked-- or in some situations, preferred to do it with dim or no lighting. The moment she perceives herself, her body, in this kind of situation, she freezes up and has a hard time continuing being horny etc etc. For many, sex is just a physical thing, and that's totally okay!! she Personally WISHES it could be just a physical/sensations thing for her, but it /cant/. Her relationship with her body and even self perception make that a little impossible. Sex is very much an emotional trust exercise to start, it's her trusting you with something only she and very very few others have seen. It's trusting you with her at her most vulnerable-- when the glitz and glamour come off, when the charade dies down and all you're left with is Her, whoever that might be, bare and nervous and spinning in her head that you're not liking what your seeing, that the image of her in your head/the image she projects on the usual is leauges better than what you got in the end. It's also, too, an exercise for her to learn that she IS desirable, all of her. Inside and out, soft tummy and flabby arms and all.
and this is why she is a Bottom, bc she needs somebody to cut through her mental haze and demonstrate that She's A Goddamn Bombshell and that she IS desirable. She's worth being listed over just as she is, without the visual trickery or glitzy embellishments.
that, and ofc she prefers getting railed over doing the railing, but she will rail you if asked. she's nice and accomadating like that.
And it's like, at least in my mind, imperative to make it KNOWN how much you're into her, into her body, while fucking. Being either vocal or physically expressive with one's desire really helps her shut the voices down and focus on enjoying herself, on enjoying you.
anyways

Avoiding the ME1 LI Romances
...And also what to do if you’ve already triggered them.
This is a post I’ve been wanting to remake forever, and with the remaster around the corner I thought now was a good time to finally get on it.
A few things first: I say “avoiding the ME1 LI romances”, but in reality this is mostly going to be about Kaidan and Ashley. While there are a few ways around Liara’s romance I’ve discovered, I have never been able to find a simple way to avoid triggering it. (Ill get to that later.)
This post will be split into three sections: Kaidan, Ashley, and Liara. Kaidan and Ashley’s sections specifically will go over how to avoid triggering their romances entirely, and then the dialogue choices you need to take if you want to end the romance if it’s already been triggered. I have also included a few bonus things for the both of them, such as avoiding the flirting during the scenic view cutscene in the Citadel Wards. For Kaidan specifically, I have also included content about his mechanics in ME3.
Please note that most of these have been accomplished on console. I have gotten several PC users who do attest that, at the very least, Kaidan’s portion works for them. But on the off-chance that platform influences other parts of Kaidan’s, or Ashley and Liara’s, I thought it was worth mentioning. It should also be said that, obviously, these are all using the original games as a basis, though I am not expecting MELE to change any of this.
I will also be using both my Kaidan transcript and Ashley transcript as reference for their dialogue. I recommend following along there if you find Tumblr’s formatting confusing.
Final note before we begin: this post is not an open invitation to hate on any of these characters. ME1 is turning 14 this year and ME3 recently turned 9. Anything you have to say about these characters and their romance mechanics has already been beaten to death, brought back to life, and beaten to death again. No one wants to hear it, least of all me. Please keep your comments to yourself and be civil.
KAIDAN
“I WANT TO AVOID TRIGGERING IT ENTIRELY, WHAT DO I DO?”
Kaidan’s romance can be triggered after the first main mission has been completed. For many players, I imagine this is Therum, but it really doesn’t matter which mission it is.
Kaidan will prompt the conversation, as he will for every other post-main mission conversation so long as his romance remains active. This conversation will be about his time at Brain Camp. You can read the conversation in his transcript if you find it easier to follow along, though I have done my best to format this post as cleanly as possible.
KAIDAN: Commander, do you have a minute?
SHEPARD: (You can choose whatever dialogue option you want. It makes no difference yet.)
KAIDAN: Off the record, I think there’s something wrong here. This Saren is looking for records on some kind of galactic extinction, but we can’t get backup from the Council? Sorry, Commander. There’s writing on the wall here, but someone isn’t reading it.
SHEPARD: (Again, you may choose whatever dialogue option you want. It still makes no difference yet.)
>FIRST CHANCE TO AVOID THE ROMANCE<
KAIDAN: I hear ya. It - It just seems like a group that’s been around as long as the Council should see this coming. It’s funny. We finally get out here and the final frontier was already settled. And the residents don’t even seem impressed by the view...or the dangers.
SHEPARD (Renegade - Zip it, Lieutenant.): I’m sure your letters home are very poignant. Just keep this kind of sentimentality out of the CIC.
KAIDAN: Yes, ma’am. Sorry to have wasted your time. I’m right about the mission, though. I know it. (The conversation will end here and his romance will not trigger.)
>SECOND CHANCE TO AVOID THE ROMANCE<
SHEPARD (Paragon - Cute way to look at it./Neutral - An old-fashioned view.): Well, well. You’re a romantic. Did you sign on “for the dream,” Alenko? Secure man’s future in space?
KAIDAN: Heh, yeah, I read a lot of those books when I was a kid. Where the hero goes to space to prove himself worthy of a woman he loves. Or, you know. For justice. Maybe I was a romantic in the beginning. But I thought about it after Brain Camp - ah, sorry, “Biotic Acclimation and Temperance training.” I’m not looking for “the dream.” I just want to do some good. See what’s out here. Sorry if I got too informal. Protocol wasn’t a big focus back in BAaT.
SHEPARD (Renegade - Just be ready.): I trust you won’t have any questions when whatever’s coming hits the fan?
KAIDAN: None. I’m not questioning the mission. I’m just concerned. Sorry to have wasted your time, ma’am. It won’t happen again. (The conversation will end here and his romance will not trigger.)
The final chance to cut off Kaidan’s romance before it triggers happens after Shepard asks him about Brain Camp. This opens up a lot of investigation options and you may exhaust all of them. If you want to avoid hearing Kaidan imply that he thinks your Shepard is attractive, avoid the “Time to talk, then./Time to “get physical,” then.” investigation options. Once Kaidan is done speaking about Brain Camp, you will get one final chance to avoid his romance.
>THIRD CHANCE TO AVOID THE ROMANCE<
KAIDAN: Anyway. This was supposed to be a casual debrief, not a bull session about stuff that happened years ago.
SHEPARD (Renegade - You’re right.): I pretty much gave up waiting for the good part.
KAIDAN: Bad habit, ma’am. I do tend to run off at the mouth. I will work on it for my next review. Sorry to have wasted your time, ma’am. It won’t happen again. (The conversation ends and his romance does not trigger.)
You will notice all of these are renegade options. There is literally no way around this if you want to avoid triggering Kaidan’s romance. You don’t get any renegade points from them, and Kaidan does not treat you negatively in the ensuing post-main mission talks.
Here is an easy way to tell if Kaidan’s romance remains active. Conversations between him and Shepard will end like this:
SHEPARD: We’ll talk later, Kaidan.
KAIDAN: I’d like that.
“I’VE ALREADY TRIGGERED IT, HOW DO I GET OUT OF THIS?”
The good news is that getting out of the romance is fairly simple. The game gives you a lot of opportunities before it triggers the love triangle with Liara (assuming her romance has also been triggered, anyway).
If Kaidan’s romance was triggered, you will have an opportunity at the beginning of his second and third post-main mission talks. These are a bit more complex to transcribe, so I really recommend just reading them in my transcription if you need the exact dialogue options to understand.
But the gist: You can’t go wrong with choosing the renegade dialogue options. This is always the dialogue option that will end his romance. You are almost never going to end his romance with a paragon or neutral dialogue option. He will always prompt this conversation by wondering if he’s gotten his signals mixed up, if there’s someone else you’d rather spend time with, if he’s being too casual, etc. Once he does this, just shoot him down with a renegade dialogue option.
Again: you get no renegade points from this. He will not treat you negatively in the ensuing post-main mission talks.
Here is an example. This one occurs in his second post-main mission talk if Liara’s romance hasn’t been triggered:
KAIDAN: I’m just saying...try to leave yourself a way out. I’ve seen what cutting corners can do and I’d hate to have that happen to you, Shepard. Commander.
SHEPARD (Renegade - I don’t need approval.): I’m your commanding officer, Alenko. Are you questioning the way I handle things?
KAIDAN: No, Commander. Just concerned about the reception of the brass if things go sour. I apologize for bringing it up. I know we’re getting the job done.
SHEPARD: (You can choose whatever response you like; they all lead to the romance ending.)
If you have repeatedly not broken off the romance with Kaidan after a certain point and Liara’s romance is also active, it will trigger the love triangle scene. This is one of the last points you have to break off Kaidan’s romance, but it will lock you into Liara’s romance instead. If you are wanting a no-romance run, I recommend choosing one of the other options instead.
There is also a separate way to end the romance outside these three opportunities. In the third post-main mission talk, you must pick the dialogue option that triggers the argument that can “renegade” Kaidan’s opinion on the Council. You must not choose the charm or intimidate option here, and you must then pick the renegade dialogue options. The conversation should go like this:
KAIDAN: So yeah, I hated that turian. But he wasn’t “a turian” to me. He was Vyrnnus.
SHEPARD (Renegade - All turians are the same.): You can’t deny the turians are imperialists. And the asari, the salarians - they’re manipulators.
KAIDAN: Shepard, I outgrew the blame game years ago. If the Alliance is missing its chance, it’s because of men like Udina. Not the rest of the galaxy holding it back.
SHEPARD (Renegade - I’m not so sure.): When anyone out here listens to us, the Council starts up with their treaties and heel-dragging. We can only rely on ourselves.
KAIDAN: We’re not doing the galaxy any favors if we try to force our way into a seat at the grown-up table. They aren’t - malicious. They’re just slow to change. My story doesn’t get any better if Vyrnnus is a good guy.
SHEPARD (Renegade - Whose side are you on?): I don’t need you kissing the Council’s asses, too.
KAIDAN: Look, Shepard. You’re in command, and we’ll all follow your lead. But don’t ream me out for having an opinion. I thought we respected each other more than that.
SHEPARD (Renegade - I can’t respect this.): I can’t believe you’d side with aliens over your own kind. I think we’re done here.
KAIDAN: Yeah, I think we are. It’s--It’s too bad we...It’s just too bad, Commander.
This argument will end his romance. He will also not be renegaded. This is obviously a much more convoluted way to end his romance, but I’m throwing the option out there because it’s 1) hilarious, and 2) way more dramatic, if you want to roleplay ending the romance for whatever reason.
MISCELLANEOUS
Depending on the dialogue options you take for the scenic view on the Citadel, Kaidan will always flirt with you. This does not lock you into, or even trigger, his romance. It is entirely possible to not have him flirt with you at all in this scene, and still initiate the romance later. But if you do not want him to flirt with you, simply do this:
Tumblr media
[image ID: ME1’s subtitles showing Ashley saying “Or maybe they just don’t like humans.” with the dialogue wheel below it giving the following dialogue choices, starting from the top: “What’s not to like?”, “Let’s move out.”, and “That’s enough, you two.” end ID]
When you get to this part of the scenic view cutscene, choose any dialogue option but the top “What’s not to like?” one.
Also, even if you’ve already avoided or shut down Kaidan’s romance, Liara will still ask if there’s something between the two of you if her romance is active. Tell her that there isn’t (because there isn’t). Her saying this does not re-trigger Kaidan’s romance.
Congratulations, you have now survived ME1’s romance mechanics. Enjoy experiencing unromanced Kaidan for the rest of the game.
ME3 BONUS: “OKAY, WHAT ABOUT HIM FLIRTING WITH ME IN THE HOSPITAL THOUGH?”
I have tested both of these personally multiple times and they have always worked for me, but again: see my warning about different platforms at the beginning of this post. If it doesn’t work for you, please let me know.
If you have not romanced Kaidan previously: don’t buy him the alcohol as a present. That’s it.
If you have romanced Kaidan previously: on Mars, tell him your relationship is over. It is a renegade dialogue option, but it is necessary to avoid the flirtation in the hospital. This route also means that you can buy him the alcohol and he will still not flirt with you.
Please note that going renegade on Mars does not lock you out of his romance. It merely prevents him from assuming you’re interested during your hospital visit.
ME3 BONUS: “OKAY, WHAT ABOUT HIS APOLLO’S PROPOSITION THOUGH?”
This only happens if you have not locked in your romance with your preferred love interest first. For Garrus, this is the bottle shooting date. For Tali and Traynor, it’s inviting her up to your cabin. For Liara and Miranda, it’s her Presidium date. So on and so forth.
This means there is no way around it if you romanced Jacob or Thane and do not want to pursue a different romance after them. If you do get this scene: again, just turn him down. It is never brought up again. He does not act like he’s in love with you going forth. You will get his unromanced date in the Citadel DLC, as well as his unromanced London goodbye.
ASHLEY
“I WANT TO AVOID TRIGGERING IT ENTIRELY, WHAT DO I DO?”
Ashley’s romance can be triggered after the first main mission has been completed. For many players, I imagine this is Therum, but it really doesn’t matter which mission it is.
Ashley will prompt the conversation, as she will for every other post-main mission conversation so long as her romance remains active. This conversation will be about her concerns about the aliens aboard the Normandy.
Note: Ashley has one less opportunity to avoid triggering her romance in the first post-main mission talk compared to Kaidan. You may also read the conversation in her transcript if you find it easier to follow along, though I have done my best to format this post as cleanly as possible.
ASHLEY: Commander. You have a minute to talk?
SHEPARD: (You can choose whatever dialogue option you want. It makes no difference yet.)
ASHLEY: I know things are different aboard the Normandy, but - I'm concerned about the aliens. Vakarian and Wrex. With all due respect, Commander, should they have full access to the ship?
SHEPARD: (Again, you can choose whatever dialogue option you want. It still makes no difference yet.)
>FIRST CHANCE TO AVOID THE ROMANCE<
ASHLEY: This is the most advanced ship in the Alliance Navy. I don't think we should give them free reign to poke around the vital systems. Engines. Sensors. Weapons.
SHEPARD (Side - You're out of line!): That's enough, Chief. You always second-guess your superiors?
ASHLEY: Sir! No, sir! I'm sorry. I was out of line. I'll get back to my duties, Commander. (The conversation will end and her romance will not trigger.)
If you do not pick the above option, Ashley will elaborate her stance further until you get to the dialogue wheel with the second (and final) chance to avoid her romance.
>SECOND CHANCE TO AVOID THE ROMANCE<
ASHLEY: My family's defended the Alliance since it was founded. My father, my grandfather, my great-grandmother - they all picked up a rifle and swore the Oath of Service. I guess we just tend to think of Earth's interests as our own.
SHEPARD (Renegade - Just shut up.): I expect you to keep your family politics to yourself, Chief. The mission will be difficult enough without you picking fights with aliens.
ASHLEY: Aye, aye, Commander. (The conversation will end and her romance will not trigger.)
Note: You can still pick the investigation dialogue options that discusses her service and family history. You just have to pick the renegade dialogue option outlined above afterward, instead of any other option.
Like with Kaidan, you do not get any renegade points for picking this option and Ashley does not treat you negatively in the ensuing post-main mission talks.
Here is an easy way to tell if Ashley’s romance remains active. Conversations between her and Shepard will end with the following:
SHEPARD: We'll talk later, Williams.
ASHLEY: Looking forward to it, sir.
“I’VE ALREADY TRIGGERED IT, HOW DO I GET OUT OF THIS?”
Admittedly, you have fewer easy opportunities to end Ashley’s romance than you do Kaidan’s, and most of the early game ones require Liara’s romance also being active. You are still offered multiple different opportunities out before the game ends, however.
If Ashley and Liara’s romances are both triggered, you will have an opportunity at the beginning of Ashley’s second and third post-main mission talks to end the romance. The gist is the same as Kaidan’s: You can’t go wrong with choosing the renegade dialogue options. This is always the dialogue option that will end her romance. You are almost never going to end her romance with a paragon or neutral dialogue option. She will always prompt this conversation by bringing up your relationship with Liara. Once she does this, just shoot her down.
Again: you get no renegade points from this. She will not treat you negatively in the ensuing post-main mission talks.
In both the second and third post-main mission talks, the conversation will go something like:
ASHLEY: Surprised to see you here, sir. Thought you’d be chatting up what’s-her-name. T’Soni.
SHEPARD: (Pick the neutral or renegade dialogue option here; they both lead to the same dialogue branch.)
ASHLEY: Scuttlebutt says you’ve got a bit of a thing for her. I could understand why. The crew’s off-limits, with the regs against fraternization. And at least she looks like a woman.
SHEPARD: (Pick the neutral or renegade dialogue option here. They both end the romance.)
One of the easier exceptions to this that doesn't require Liara’s romance being active is in the second post-main mission talk when Ashley gets Sarah’s vid-mail. It will go like this:
SARAH: - Oh, before I go. You said you’re serving with Commander Shepard now? We saw him on the news here. He’s cute! Later, sis.
ASHLEY: Tell me you didn’t hear that.
SHEPARD (Renegade - That’s unprofessional.): I don’t need to tell you it’s inappropriate to gossip about how “cute” your commanding officer is.
ASHLEY: No, sir. You don’t. Sorry about that. It won’t happen again. (Conversation and romance ends.)
Please note, however, that this will lock you out of the remainder of the conversation and you will not learn about Ashley’s family.
If you have repeatedly not broken off the romance with Ashley after a certain point and Liara’s romance is also active, it will trigger the love triangle scene. This is one of the last points you have to break off Ashley’s romance, but it will lock you into Liara’s romance instead. If you are wanting a no-romance run, I recommend choosing one of the other options instead.
There is also a separate way to end the romance outside these three opportunities. In the third post-main mission talk, you must pick the dialogue option that triggers the argument that can “paragon” Ashley’s opinion on the Council. You must not choose the charm or intimidate option here, and you must then pick the renegade dialogue options. The conversation should go something like this:
ASHLEY: But hey, once we save the galaxy, maybe the Alliance will get its act together. Start acting like an actual government.
SHEPARD (Paragon - The Alliance is all right.): The Alliance isn’t perfect, but it does well enough.
ASHLEY: Have to disagree with you there, skipper. Giving aliens the run of our most advanced ship? Kowtowing to the Council?
SHEPARD (Paragon - It’s not like that.): The Alliance should be able to stand on is own. We can’t. Yet. Why not learn from the races that have been standing for the last thousand years?
ASHLEY: How can you say that, given everything we’ve seen out here? They’re already acting like Saren is our problem. Already siccing us on the bear. The Council races will always think of themselves first. It’s - human nature. We can’t afford to trust them. Not if the survival of humanity is on the line.
SHEPARD (Renegade - I’ve heard enough.): Whatever feelings I might have for you, we have to work with the Council. I can’t let you second-guess our superiors.
ASHLEY: Shepard, I’m a soldier. You’re my commander. If you give me an order, I’ll follow it. I don’t expect you to treat me differently from anyone else under your command. And if you have been - quit it. I thought you knew me better than that.
SHEPARD (Renegade - Do I?): Seems like every time we run up against aliens, you whip out the “Earth first” card. I can’t have my authority undermined.
ASHLEY: I never intended to “undermine” you, Shepard. I believe in you. I wish you’d believe in anyone but yourself. With your permission, sir, I’ll return to my duties.
This argument will end her romance. She will also not be paragoned. This is obviously a much more convoluted way to end her romance, but I’m throwing the option out there because it’s 1) hilarious (that final line, oof), and 2) way more dramatic, if you want to roleplay ending the romance for whatever reason.
MISCELLANEOUS
Like with Kaidan, depending on the dialogue options you take for the scenic view on the Citadel, Ashley will always flirt with you. This does not lock you into, or even trigger, her romance. Congratulations, you have now survived ME1’s romance mechanics. Enjoy experiencing unromanced Ashley for the rest of the game.
LIARA
“I WANT TO AVOID TRIGGERING IT ENTIRELY, WHAT DO I DO?”
As I mentioned in the beginning of this post, I have found no easy way around Liara’s romance. If anyone else has, I genuinely mean it when I say I would absolutely be open to you telling me, because I would love to know.
The only way to avoid triggering Liara’s romance that I have found are the following:
Simply not talking to her for most of the game (not ideal)
Completing Therum only after you’ve done at least two main missions (also not ideal since it will require Noveria being completed without her)
Completing Therum only after all the other main missions have been completed (again not ideal, though every player should at least do this once if only for the unique content you get from it)
Okay, so what if you want to complete Therum first but still avoid Liara’s romance? I have found one way to accomplish this, but it requires you to be in a romance with Kaidan (or presumably Ashley, but I have only tested this with Kaidan).
After you recruit Liara, you may check up on her in the med-bay but do not initiate conversation after that. If she prompts you by saying, “I get the feeling you want to ask me something, Commander,” do not pick the yellowed dialogue option:
Tumblr media
[image ID: ME1′s subtitles showing Liara saying, “I get the feeling you want to ask me something, Commander.” with the dialogue wheel showing the following options: “Investigate”, a yellowed option above “Investigate” labeled “I’d like to talk about you.”, and “Goodbye.” end ID.]
After you complete another main mission, you can check back in with Liara and speak to her normally. This conversation should be the one you’d normally get after Therum, where you learn about why she likes archaeology and how she finds Shepard fascinating.
After you complete another main mission, you must talk to Kaidan or Ashley first. To clarify: at this point you should be at the post-third main mission mark. For Kaidan, you will be getting the “Vyrnnus and Rahna” talk that you can read in his transcript; for Ashley, you will be getting the “Williams Curse” talk that you can read in her transcript.
After you speak with Kaidan or Ashley, you may speak with Liara as normal. This conversation should be picking up on where you left off last time. Liara will talk about how she’s looked into Shepard’s history and Shepard can press her for why she’s so interested in them. Liara should then say something like the following lines:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
LIARA: I admit, your connection to the Protheans had something to do with my initial interest. But it has grown beyond that. My interest in you, however, is strictly professional. I want to make that clear. It is obvious you and Lt. Alenko already have some type of relationship. I would not want to come between you.
Her romance will not trigger for the rest of the game.
Please note: Again, I have only tested this with Kaidan. But it should, in theory, work the exact same for Ashley considering many of hers and Kaidan’s other romance mechanics are identical.
“THAT’S NICE, BUT HOW DO I END HER ROMANCE IF IT’S ALREADY TRIGGERED?”
You will follow the same steps as in Kaidan and Ashley’s portions. When she prompts you with whether or not there’s anything between the two of you, you must turn her down. You can never go wrong with the renegade dialogue options here. Again: you get no renegade points for it, and Liara treats you no differently going forth.
She will also usually bring up Kaidan or Ashley depending on what Shepard you are playing, and mention that it seems like there’s something between the two of you even when you do not have their romance active. If you aren’t romancing the VS, just tell her that she’s got it wrong, because...she does. It does not re-trigger either of their romances.
YES I AM ALMOST DONE TALKING
The game really does give you ample opportunities to avoid or end the romances (which is only fair considering how easy they are to trip), so hopefully I have outlined at least one you are comfortable taking.
There are other ways to end both Kaidan and Ashley’s romance that I did not mention (such as during the locker scene, or if you try to un-paragon/renegade) - the point of no return you mainly have to worry about is en route to Ilos. I imagine most players will have their romances sorted out by then, though, so I’m not sure it’s worth mentioning unless you’re wanting to do it purely for roleplay reasons. (In which case: you may read those in their respective transcripts if you’re curious.)
I cannot say I have tested every single romance cut-off, but I have tested most of the important ones players are most likely to take. I am assuming the romances are cut off based on the fact Shepard and the VS’ farewells will change depending on their romanced status (as I outlined in their respective sections), which I do feel is a safe bet. But if you try one of these and find that it did not end the romance: I’m sorry, and please do let me know (and also what platform you play on).
If you read all of this: thank you for your time, and I hope you find this guide useful!

Daily Writing Challenge 2021 Day 10 - Sleepless
Read Part 1 —> Here Read Part 2 ---> Here Part 3 Warnings: Blood, Wounds
Tumblr media
Aerden ran, and kept running as fast as he could. All those sleepless nights spent training in the gym with his fellow soldiers, with Cazmilan, and even by himself had certainly paid off. It was never just about training your body to be in peak physical condition, you had to train your mind to think differently too. To think clearly and quickly, and not panic in life or death situations. Easier said than done, but at least he was actively trying to find out a way out of this predicament rather than curl up and die; a huge improvement from his first time on the battlefield where he tried to do just that.
The charred behemoth was now fully focused on him, and while its heavy frame kept it from immediately trampling the much smaller elf, its sheer size allowed it to slowly gain ground. Soon enough it would catch up, and soon enough Aerden would be a dead man if he didn’t do something. Every now and then the behemoth would make a deep, rumbling noise which Aerden knew preceded another blast of molten inferno. Quickly, he’d have to roll to the side to escape a fiery death before continuing his sprint. It was almost like a video game boss: Dodging things, jumping over obstacles, learning the tells to avoid the special powers of the enemy. At least this behemoth didn’t seem any smarter than gaming A.I., but he wouldn’t be able to keep this up forever.
After what felt like ages, he finally spotted an out. Another terrible idea, but fighting a behemoth alone was not in the books today. The rocky edge of a cliff, or maybe the edge of the Maw itself was just ahead. What happened if you jumped off the edge of the Maw anyways? A question he didn’t want answered today, or ever really.
His chest and legs burned with the effort, and his side was really starting to burn too, but in a completely different way. If he made it out of this alive only to die of some infection he was going to be really pissed. The edge of the cliff was quickly approaching, and Aerden skidded to a halt as he peered over to survey what was below. Nothing. Neat. Behind him the behemoth kept coming at full speed, as Aerden had hoped. The molten inferno seemed to be depleted at the moment and would take some time to recharge, so it would have to physically attack the elf instead; everything was going to plan thus far.
Aerden’s eyes grew wide as the hulking Mawsworn came closer and closer, until it was within melee distance: The heat this thing exuded was like standing in front of a roaring bonfire on an already hot, sunny day. Those armor-covered claws swept upwards before rushing down with the intention of smashing the soldier into the ground where he stood. Instead, the behemoth’s fist only found hard rock as Aerden had jumped off the edge of the cliff! It wasn’t the first time he had jumped from a high cliff, but it was the first time without a parachute or glider, or even knowing what was below.
But he had no intention of falling. There was a very slight incline in the rocky edge before completely dropping off into nothingness, and he hadn’t practiced all that rock climbing and worked on his grip strength for nothing. Bare hands scrambled to find something to hold onto. His first grip crumbled beneath his downward force before fingers found purchase on a sturdier ridge. The ground shook and terrain crumbled as the behemoth’s fist smashed into the rocks above, but it unfortunately did not fall. It was, however, standing precariously close to the edge and would no doubt spot the elf hanging on for dear life very soon. Escaping was no longer the priority, he was going to destroy this damn thing.
Hoisting himself up to find some footing to free up one of his hands, he focused his mind and his energy into this one task. If this didn’t work? Well, then he was fucked. He slapped his hand against the rock above him, channeling all that power and rage into this one singular burst of chi. Narrow cracks sprouted beneath the tips of his splayed fingers, fracturing upwards and finding all the faults and weak points until exploding in an eruption of rock and dust right beneath the behemoth’s steadying foot.
Aerden abruptly clambered further over to one side and hugged himself against the stony wall just as a large chunk of slope tumbled down towards the abyss. The behemoth roared and flailed its arms wildly, trying to find something to grip to no avail. It toppled over the edge of the cliff, stretching an arm out to take one final swing at the soldier. The tip of a claw caught Aerden’s left thigh, easily slicing through the thick leathers he wore and into his flesh. He let out a cry of anguish, the sudden tug testing his strength, but he managed to maintain his grip as the beast plummeted into the unknown.
Exhaling a slow, shaky breath, Aerden slowly made his way up to solid ground, rolling onto his back once he ensured that no other enemies were nearby. A hand lay atop his pounding heart as he focused on breathing, in and out, in and out. He could feel the blood soaking through his leathers, and the sting of an open laceration against the dusty air. Everything hurt, all of his adrenaline had run out and he felt completely drained. Yet he knew he had to keep going despite it all, he had to make sure the others made it back to the camp safely. Not dying would be great too.
With a wince, he sat up to survey the damage and...yep. He held the back of his hand to his mouth and looked away, that was going to leave a scar. It was one thing seeing it on someone else, but seeing a jagged, deep wound on your own person? Not great. He used what very little energy he had left to attempt to stop the bleeding, then wrapped it tight with bandages from his med kit. Moving was more important than expert first aid, it was dangerous to stay in one place for too long here.
Gasping in pain upon standing, he nearly toppled back over before gripping a nearby rock to keep his balance. He wasn’t going to be able to move quickly, but he knew if he hugged the edge and headed west that he would eventually find his way back to the refuge.
...To be continued...

Argy-Bargy - FFXIV Write Prompt #22
Tumblr media
The hardest part of crossing the Ruby Sea for Vael wasn’t commandeering a boat. It wasn’t fighting his seasickness, managing his fear of deep water, or dealing with being far from home.
It was paying the tithe. The thrice-damned, blatantly extortionary. freedom-murdering tithe.
It was worth it, however. A chance for a rematch against the fiercest opponent he had known in years was worth all the gil he could pay. The Confederates were understandably wary when he announced his intent to travel to Onokoro, but after dropping Khorchi’s name, his passage was eased.
Her silhouette stood against the sun over a wooden platform. It was an arena used by the pirates for the purpose of sparring, and thus the ideal venue for the bout to come.
“Cat boy. I was beginning to think you wouldn’t show.” Khorchi bemused as Vael ascended to the platform.
Vael chuckled as he brandished his staff and affixed his mask to his face. Though not the ideal focus for magic-and-martial mixed fighting style, the staff would serve as a more powerful vehicle for Vael’s spells than his favored gunblade or rapier. “Well, I had some business to take care of. You should be honored; it takes a lot of effort to make it all the way out here.”
Khorchi spat off the side of the arena and twirled her staff into a fighting stance. “Don’t forget whose turf you’re on. I’d watch the gloating.”
“Merely trying to set the stage, beautiful. Now, will you throw the first punch, or-”
Vael could barely raise a wall of solid aether to block the incoming fireball. All the heat of a scorching summer day washed over him in a matter of seconds, forcing his aetheric shield to wither away. Vael’s vision returned just in time to intercept his opponent’s furious charging attack.
He spun his staff and slammed the back end into the ground, creating a shockwave that threw Khorchi off just in time. She found her footing instead of tumbling, and began charging another spell. Vael was on the defensive in the wake of Khorchi’s berserk ferocity, and he had to turn the tables, fast.
“Try and stop this!” A bolt of lightning rocketed forth from the tip of Khorchi’s staff directly at Vael. She was trying to goad him into throwing another shield up so that she could slip around with a melee attack.
Vael held his hands out and caught the lightning bolt in his hands. The energy seared his hands, crackled painfully in his grasp as he struggled to contain it. With a pained shout, Vael forced the lightning back at its origin.
Khorchi gasped and was thrown backwards by the returned attack. Vael had the reprieve he so desperately needed; a reprieve he spent catching his breath and staring at the shredded remains of his newly destroyed gloves.
As Khorchi rose from the ground, steam rising from the new burns on her clothes, Vael snapped out of it and pushed another spell forward. A gust of gale-force winds arose from behind him. Sawdust flew about, and Confederate spectators found implements to hang on to.
Khorchi threw her hands up and planted her feet to resist the push. A few inches were given, but no more. “What’s... what’s wrong?” She shouted over the din of the howling wind. “Are we playing keep away? Afraid of getting bitten again?”
“Bite this!” Vael slammed the blunt end of his staff into the ground. A great boom was heard overhead as a storm cloud gathered immediately overhead.
Bolts of lightning began to pepper the arena, scorching wood and filling the air with the smell of ozone. With the wind at his back and the storm overhead, Vael was pouring his all into creating a literal perfect storm.
Desperately, Khorchi attempted to raise her hands to counter the thunderstorm gathering ahead, but as she dropped her guard the wind pushed her back even further. She re-affirmed her guard just as she teetered over the arena’s edge.
A ring-out would mean her defeat, and so would taking the full brunt of the storm above. Her greatest asset was her unyielding, raging offense, and this cocky cat from the west had taken it away from her.
As the lightning descended directly towards her, Khorchi smiled. There were worse ways to lose a fight.
______________________
The air had settled, and fair weather had returned to the small corner of Onokoro that served as a battlefield for the two mages. Vael laid his staff for the time and staggered over to where Khorchi laid. It looked at first as if she were hyperventilating, but as he drew close, she seemed to be... laughing?
“Oh, kami forfend, I finally understand what you meant.” The auri woman managed to say in between labored laughs. Vael held out his hand and helped her up to her feet, tenuous though his own grasp on the ground was. “Is that what you felt when I made you eat sand that first time?”
“More or less.” Vael admitted. He had won, but he wasn’t about to boast about it. Not yet, anyway. “So, what do you think? “
Khorchi huffed in a feigned show of unimpressedness. Her azure hair flitted up softly and then fell back into place over her eye. “I suppose you have some talent... but I might require another showing just to be sure. After you’ve licked your wounds, of course.”
Vael laughed. “I look forward to it. These trips are getting expensive though; maybe you could talk to your higher-ups about waiving the tithe for a-
“Don’t even dream of it.”
It was worth a shot. Vael had gotten his rematch, and yet another thrilling duel seemed to loom on the horizon.
He was thankful that she didn’t seem to realize the truth; that if his storm gambit hadn’t worked, he would have certainly lost.
