Finding Storm's next generation is Craig Bellamy's new challenge after re-signing
Posted June 17, 2018 21:00:48 Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy has put to bed weeks of speculation surrounding his future, signing a contract extension that will keep him with the Storm until 2021. The protracted negotiations with Melbourne chief executive David Donaghy eventually bore fruit with the club locking the 58-year-old into a three-year deal valued at $1.7 million per year. This will extend Bellamy's tenure with the club to 19 seasons. A move to the Broncos was seen by many as a new challenge for a coach considered one of the greatest in NRL history a chance to make his mark in the sunshine state. But after the departure of star half-back Cooper Cronk last season and the inevitable retirement of veterans Billy Slater and Cameron Smith, Donaghy said a different kind of challenge awaits him in Melbourne. External Link:Melbourne Storm tweet: Focused. Driven. Caring. Family. Leader. Bellamy. #MelbourneProud #purplepride "There's obviously the allure of going somewhere with a slightly warmer climate, I know that's appealing, but there's lots of challenges and opportunities that Melbourne offers," he said. "We're coming to a point where we're transitioning out of our big three players, we've got some wonderful new exciting talent coming through. "I think that's a real key reason as to why Craig's signed on for another three years." Bellamy who discovered and polished the mercurial talents of Slater, Cameron and Cronk will now look to nurture a new crop of gifted youngsters such as Cameron Munster and Josh Addo-Carr. External Link:Dave Donaghy interview And the Storm boss thinks Bellamy is more than up to the task. "I'm really excited about what this season looks like and the next three years beyond." Donaghy said he was confident Bellamy would stay, but the coach had played his cards close to his chest. "I've known Craig for a long time, the one thing I probably didn't know about him is that he's a pretty good poker player, he kept his poker face on the entire way through," he said. The news will be bitterly received in Brisbane, where Bellamy was headhunted as the man to replace his former tutor Wayne Bennett at the helm of the Brisbane Broncos. The Broncos will now have to cast a wider net in their search for Bennett's successor, with Souths coach Anthony Seibold emerging as a likely candidate.
