DISASTROUS NEWS for the Australian ceramics industry as Holmesglen TAFE recently annouced the premature closure of the last remaining Diploma of Ceramics course in Victoria. Despite having advertised and continuing to advertise online the Diploma as a 2 year full time course (or 4 year part time course) Holmesglen has announced all units will cease to be offered by the end of 2016. Remaining units will be cut down and combined into half year courses and studio hours have been completely reduced. This is despite accepting new students mid year 2015 and encouraging part time study with the full knowledge these students cannot finish their accredited diplomas (and the course is full-fee so not cheap). The current students ask that Holmesglen allow us to finish their diploma therefore fulfilling their contractual obligations to provide a 2 year accredited diploma to its students. Plus more concerningly, it is important for the ceramics industry Australia-wide that this course continues so that future generations can learn and pass on this ancient and undervalued artform. This diploma is the last remaining purely skill-based course of its kind left in the state. As I decided to go to Spain for 6 months this year I too would not be able to complete my diploma next year with the proposed cuts, and I was not warned of this before planning my trip overseas. Not good enough, Holmesglen.
