When you think of travelling to South East Asia, thoughts of beaches, temples, cheap eats and war history probably come to mind.

And while Bali has been an Aussie favourite for decades, there’s another county, just a short flight from there, that’s attracting millions of travellers… Vietnam. Why? Because it has it all. Literally.

While places like Bali and the Philippines appeal to beach-loving, sun-seeking holidayers, Vietnam offers an entirely different experience (as well as beautiful beaches).

My partner and I embarked on a 30-day SE Asia trip, starting with 10 days in Vietnam. He was fascinated with learning about the country’s turbulent history and I always had an affinity for Buddhist culture.

We didn’t plan much, besides loosely researching the places we wanted to visit. Given Vietnam’s varied landscapes, it really has something for everyone. From big cities and famous rivers, beaches and small quaint towns, temples, bays and mountains, it would be a stretch not to find something you like. This was my favourite thing about Vietnam.

Ho Chi Minh, 4 days

Because we were flying in from Australia, we booked a direct flight from Adelaide to Ho Chi Minh (Saigon). I adored this colourful city. We stayed in a guesthouse which cost less than A$20, so $10 each per day. It was tucked in one of the many narrow streets which, somehow, people were able to ride their scooters up and down (with baskets of fruit and vegetables balanced on their heads). Amazing, I tell you.

The first night, we went out for dinner. We ordered two soups, two mains, rice, and two beers. It was A$7 each, so get ready to spend absolutely nothing on food here. We woke up and sipped on a 70-cent Vietnamese coffee and $1.50 fried noodles, cooked right in front of us.

While you’ve got to be mindful of the traffic while wandering around Ho Chi Minh, don’t let it put you off. You can relax on one of the many rooftops after a day of wandering.

I’d recommend two-day trips while you’re in Ho Chi Minh: the underground tunnels used by Viet Cong soldiers (Củ Chi tunnels) and the Mekong Delta islands.

Ho Chi Minh was the best city out of the two. And speaking of favourite places…

Hoi An, 3 days

If I could tell you one thing about Vietnam, it’s this. Go to Hoi An, and make sure it’s not just for a day. This ancient little town is a historical melting pot, approximately half way up Vietnam’s eastern coastline. I fell in love with its colourful French colonial buildings, laid-back vibe (after Ho Chi Minh) and how every night, the locals majestically set alight lanterns and release them into the water.

There are dozens of charming restaurants, tailors to get clothes made, markets, cooking classes and cycling routes out of town and to the beach.

I’d spend at least three days in Hoi An. You don’t need to have anything planned, simply take every wonderful little nook of this town in. Fly or take a train to Da Nang, then jump on a scooter and cruise 30 minutes south, down the (relaxed) highway to Hoi An.

Hanoi / SaPa, 3-4 days

Next, make your way up to Vietnam’s biggest city, Hanoi. We had intentions to use Hanoi as a base to move between Halong Bay and SaPa, the mountain region bordering China. But, having fallen in love with Hoi An, our plans changed. We only spent one night in Hanoi, then took an overnight train to SaPa.

Backpackers we crossed paths with shared many tales about Halong Bay and how it’s “unmissable.” Next time, I thought. But, we had no regrets about going to SaPa. From city to beach town, then back to the city, we were excited to finally not be sweating 24/7.

Our guesthouse was high up, where the mountains meet the clouds. We spend our days hiking, spotting beautiful rice fields, waterfalls and mystical towns – then, at night, we’d wander fish markets, drink hot chocolate, and sit by the fireplace. SaPa was the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.

Oh, and one tip! Don’t be afraid to follow the beautiful local ladies who ask to take you on a walk. They just want to show you their villages, tell stories, and talk to foreigners. They’ll give their whole day for you, in exchange for a small tip. Trust me, it’s worth it.

The logistics of your Vietnam 10-day adventure

While we didn’t plan much prior to leaving because I’m a lover of spontaneity, there are some must-dos before jetting off.

The visa

First, your visa. Do this before you even book the flight. I’ve heard you can organise it at the airport you fly into but I recommend sorting it out before you depart. Those lines at arrivals can take hours and I had read that you need a visa before flying out. So, save yourself the stress and do it before.

You need to send off your passport to the Vietnamese consulate. It takes a couple of weeks, so allow some time for it.

The flight

Well, this part’s easy. I’d suggest flying into Ho Chi Minh with your favourite airline who have flight paths to this region of SE Asia. On memory, we book two separate flights: a one-way to Ho Chi Minh, then back from Hanoi. You shouldn’t pay more than $1,500 for this.

Accommodation in Vietnam

I used Booking.com for all of our guesthouses. If you’re on a budget, I wouldn’t even bother staying in hostels. Guesthouses are just as cheap (A$15-20 per night) and usually include breakfast. Yep, A$15.

Budgeting for your trip to Vietnam

The main cost of our 10-day trip was the flights. Once you get there, you won’t be spending more than A$30 a day on accommodation and food at the time of writing this. Of course, add a buffer for shopping and excursions. I’d say A$2,000 – $2,500 is a good ballpark to aim for, for a 10-day trip, including travel insurance.

Do I need to learn Vietnamese?

You can get by with English just fine, but it’s always good to learn a few local words.

Safety

We had no issues with safety but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have your wits about you. The only stressful experience we had was taking a ‘black cab’, which essentially means an unregistered cab who charge more. We realised and got out immediately.

Hundreds of boats and sampans come to anchor along the riverbanks, forming a line stretching for up to two kilometers. Owners of large boats bring in whatever they want to sell –from handicrafts, pottery, and ceramics, to tropical fruits, domestic animals, poultry, snakes, and bonsais — from villages as far as tens of kilometers away. In particular, boat drivers are mainly women with traditional Mekong Delta costumes such as Non La, Ba Ba shirts,…and often embarrassed when meeting tourists.

3. An unique way of advertising

Each boat has a wooden stick called a “cây bẹo”. The meaning of this wooden stick is to tell other people or traders that are the product that is offered by the owner of the boat. While the general rule is “sell whatever you want”. However, some products are hung but not for sale. Residents of the floating market have summarized three exceptions as follows:

“What’s hanging without selling?” It is the clothes. Floating market residents often live on boats, so their clothes are often dried on boats, so they don’t sell these items.

“What sells without hanging?” It is the boats that sell food and drinks. These things cannot be hung up.

“What’s that hanging one, selling another?” It is hanging coconut leaves but selling boats. People who want to sell their boats often hang a piece of coconut leaf on a pole.

Unlike other floating markets, to Cai Be floating market, you not only observe the morning market scene in the West, but also visit the traditional villages and participate in activities. When planning your Laos holiday, Luang Prabang is undeniably a must see destination. After visiting this ancient city during your Indochina tours, you will definitely have a different thought about this country. It has a lot more to offer real travelers other than Vang Vieng, which was a very famous spot in Laos for a long time. In my first blog about Luang Prabang Laos, you have found a general guide to plan your trip. Then here we are in the second blog, I am going to give you a sample Luang Prabang itinerary for 3 days.

How to get Luang Prabang

Once again, Luang Prabang is 300km from Vientiane capital. In order to travel from Vientiane to Luang Prabang, there are no more than 2 choices of transportation you can take: flight and bus. If you want to keep the cost low, using bus is inexpensive. Some types of buses you can find are minivans and sleeper buses, which will take around 9 – 10 hours. Bear in mind that road system in Laos is not what you expect to be smooth and comfortable all of the time. Hence, the 9 hour ride from Vientiane to Luang Prabang will be quite bumpy. If you are taking plane options, there are 2 airlines with only a few flights per day: Laos Airline and Laos Skyway. By using plane, it would be nearly 1 hour only.

Suggested Luang Prabang itinerary

Once you arrive in the city, here is a suggestion on how you can spend 3 days in Luang Prabang for your Laos tours.

Day 1: Temples and Mekong Delta river cruise

City center of Luang Prabang is selected to be the UNESCO World Heritage site and is where you can find 33 delicate temples. Hence, exploring temples is an integral part of Laos’ culture and a foremost thing to do in Laos. Luang Prabang city is small enough for you to take a walk around in a morning, or in an alternative way, you can hire a bicycle for 20,000 – 30,000 kip per day.

Firstly, you can kick off your day to Wat Xieng Thong, the “monastery of the golden city”. This is perhaps one of the most important and famous temple in Laos and was built in the 16th century. There are more than 20 structures including: a sim, shrine, pavilions, residences, flowers garden, ornamental shrubs, and trees. Then, you can cycle to the next stop to see the Royal Palace, the place where King Sisavang Vong and his family used to live. This palace is now converted to become a national museum with an unique architecture mixing between Laos and French style. Besides these 2 attractions, you can consider adding the following temples into your list: Wat Phon Phao, Wat Sop Sickaram, Wat Pa Phai, Wat Mahathat, Wat Aham and That Makmo.

In the afternoon, head yourself to the Mekong river for a short cruise. You can either jump onto a boat with a group or hire a private one and make a ride through the river in around 1 hour. Or you can make further trip to visit Pak Ou caves, or also called the Buddha Cave, a pair of cave at the edge of Mekong river. In order to see the sunset, you can also start this trip a little bit late in the afternoon.

Day 2: Kuang Si Falls, Mount Phou Si viewpoint

After an easy day after arrival in Luang Prabang, you should prepare for a more active day. Today, you should put the alarm to wake up quite early to get ready to visit a little paradise in Luang Prabang: Kuang Si Falls. Being 30 kilometers away from city center, there are numerous way to get here by tuk tuk, by sharing minivan, by motorbikes or bicycles if you prefer adventure. Kuang Si Falls situate in a small village, south – west of Luang Prabang. In order to get to the falls, you only need to walk for a short distance. This fall is famous for its blue, fresh and turquoise pools, cascades and waterfalls. If you visit the fall in summer time, swimming is possible with changing clothes room. However, you are allowed to swim in certain pools only because some areas are quite dangerous.

Upon returning to city center of Luang Prabang, you drive to Mount Phou Si, a hill in the old town. Coming here, you will have chance to see a panorama view from the top and one of the best sunset in Luang Prabang if you are lucky with the weather.

Day 3: Traditional Arts and Ethnology Center, UXO Laos Visitor Center, Laos Massage, Chilling at Riverside bar

If this is your last day in Luang Prabang, there is no need to be rush, let it become a chilling day for small activities only and mostly entertainment. After having breakfast, you head to visit the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Center first. This is a small venue belonging to a private non – profit museum devoting to various ethnic groups in Laos. This exhibition has the demonstration of ethnic clothing, religious art facts, working tools that will help you learn about way of life of Laos people. This center is open from Tuesday to Sunday only. After that, we get the transfer to UXO Laos Visitor Center. This is also a huge center that displays the unexploded ordnance. As a matter of fact, Laos was the most heavily bombed country in area during the war. By visiting this center, you will understand a part of its history.

In the afternoon, you should indulge yourself in a Laos massage. Though Laos does not have a well-known massage skill like Thailand or Indonesia, it is still worth to spend 1 or 2 hours for this during your Laos holiday. There are many spas ranging from inexpensive to more refined, if you can pay a little more, you can really have a nice and relaxing time at a good spa. After massaging, find yourself a good – view bar to chill out. You are highly recommended the following places: Saffron Café, Indigo Café, Le Banneton, Joma Bakery, Utopia, etc.

Today is our first full day off after beginning FGI. There are options for people to choose between a cooking class, going to Cu Chi Tunnels or Mekong Delta. I chose the last. It’s about a 2 hour ride from our hotel down to Mekong. Mekong is a network of rivers in the southern tip of Vietnam stretched over 40,000 square kilometers. Our tour includes visiting a brick kiln that uses minimal energy and local resources to produce brick.  We also visit a coconut candy making site and it’s cool to see how the candies are made. It’s clear that industries like these did not exist prior to tourism taking a hold in this area, but now encompass a large proportion of income. The tangible impact of tourism is very apparent. During our boat ride, we start karaoke and it’s great how people’s reluctance shreds away as one after another person starts singing their favorite songs. One of the last imagery for him from this trip was a narrow waterway that our smaller boat went through. There was bamboo and greens on either side providing shade under the scorching sun and the calmness of still water as we rowed over it. Along with boating, we also cycled through the streets which was super fun. There was very little traffic and we were biking through small towns. We got back late afternoon and went for a massage with Sam and Josep. I then went for dinner to Tandoor with Maryse and Vimala and ended the night at one of the tallest buildings in HCMC, Bitexco, at a bar--Eon 52, providing a view of the vast city at night.

  Day 2: Cruising to early Cai Rang floating market and biking around villages in Mekong River (Meals: breakfast, lunch)

At 05.30am, boarding on a motorized boat to Cai Rang floating market. In the way, you can see many bustling activities along Can Tho riverbanks. You have chance to know how local people go fishing and transport passengers as well as product by the waterway.

Approaching Cai Rang floating market, you can reappear the selling activities in the past by using a traditional “offering pole” for exchanging consumer goods.

To understand more about lifestyle over there, you keep going into some small creeks, you will fell the pure atmosphere and enjoy the Southern countryside.

Then biking to Cai Son village paths to look at the rural activities of the local people, through the canal, rice paddies, orchard, Noodle factory. Stop at Mr Ba Cong’s orchard, walk around the garden and enjoying fruit, drinking tea, chatting with the local people to see the Mekong inhabitants’ life.

Continue cycling through the ferry, arrive to Ba Lang and have lunch there.

After that, running along the village access the river, visitors sometimes see the rural activities of the local people… You feel like relaxing at the peaceful and quite garden.

14.30, proceed to Ho Chi Minh city.

Arrive to the city and drop you off at your hotel around 18.00.

Travel by road to Cai Be. Board the Song Xanh Sampan, with nicely furnished private cabins, with en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioning and tastefully decorated by Vietnamese artisans.

Cruise downstream on the Tien Giang River to Cho Lach.

Lunch will be served during the cruise.

See the river activity of the many sands and rice barges on the river.

Visit the inhabitants of a village on the banks of the Mang Thit River. Visit the lush, productive orchards or nearby rice fields.

Back on board, and cruise towards the Mang Thit River.
