"—this is where it all went down."

Mekhi stabs the end of her surf board into the sand with a slight crunch. She pushes her sunglasses up off her eyes and onto her head, sending her swamp witch-like hair away from her face in a cartoonish way. It looks a bit like she's been zapped by electricity. Though she was born and bred on the beach, she'll never get along with the salty air and the humidity.

"You're lucky you asked me to take you out here, 'cause none of the other lifeguards would have had the cajones to rip through the caution tape," she says, bookending her words with a snicker. "Water rescue said she looked all bloated, like an overstuffed turkey, even though she apparently only drowned, like, five minutes before they found her. News crews were out here and everything. It was bananas. This one lifeguard who was supposed to be on post here got hella fired. I feel bad for him, but... He should'a been paying attention." Ironic, because she's also missing from her post right now, but she struck up a deal with Matt to watch her portion of the blue.

She folds her arms, looking out into the waves crashing along the shore, then letting out a pseudo-dramatic sigh. Then, she gives the man a sharp glance. "What'd you say your name was again? Yeah. I don't mean to rush you or anything, but my lunch break's coming up and I'd love the $20 to buy some shrimp tacos at Shelly's."

It's seeming more and more like she should kiss her dreams of fish tacos for lunch goodbye as he draws in closer to the caution tape, its flapping yellow properties unnatural among the sand, reeds, and open blue. Down below, past the cliff, families and couples are bathing in the sun, throwing caution to the wind that a dead body bubbled up not one week ago. Mekhi scrunches her lips to the side and looks down at Wynter (yeah, right—she's not dumb, but it feels like it'd be easier and faster to pretend like she is), mulling over his words.

"You could chock it up to some freak accident and move on with your life like everyone else is," she throws out there, though part of her knows that's not going to happen. Not with types like this guy, who parachute in when something uncanny happens in a small town to dig their nose in places it doesn't belong. And when nothing comes up, or maybe another dead body turns up, they flee. Figuring the risk isn't worth the measly reward.

"I mean, isn't, like, 80% of the water a bunch of undiscovered mysterious stuff? Who knows, maybe poor Sally got stung by a new, freakazoid species of jellyfish that we don't know about and bam."

A little insensitive to be talking about Sally like that, maybe, but Mekhi and Sally didn't get along much in high school. And we'll just leave it at that. His questions bring her back to reality. "Well, technically, there's a part of the beach that's off-limits. I bet she and some of her friends swam out there, trying to be cool even though we all know they peaked in high school. Maybe she got taken away by a rip current or something, and, yeah." She shrugs. "And no, I have no clue where the morgue is." Pops a big bubble with her bubblegum, then chews.

“Wynter,” his simple but hardly full answer breezed past, dark hair a windswept rustle. The closer at the shoreline the higher it’s whipping today. Surf’s up and all that jazz seems an appropriate description BUT blood’s up probably more fitting. Rather it’s a gruesome sort of weirdness crashing into these usually peaceful shores. He just happens to be around due to summer.

The man’s in full swing with his job. Attempting to grab anything of interest he was MEANT to be celebrating this whole new experience. Instead in typical Landon fashion he’s on the scene of an accident. She seems to enjoy spilling details on the chaos it caused. Why does he get the feeling this is the most excitement they’ve had in a long time? “Uh, sure I’ll pay for your lunch. I just need to figure out exactly what happened. I mean don’t call me a toxicologist or forensic expert but a bloated body kinda needs several days before that.” He moved further away from her, crouching down near several markers in the sand.

“Do you know where the morgue is?” the journalist asked, raising his eyebrow while peering back up to her. Oh man is she giving him the stink eye? That’s hardly what he needs. Bribing is one thing but locals are gonna start sizing him up like outsider grub soon enough. “How did nobody see anything? I mean this lifeguard – he didn’t hear her yelling. Or frantic splashing? Don’t tell me it was so packed with beach goers nobody heard or saw anything. Makes no sense.” @mutatedangels // prev
