Rehearsals for show #1 have begun! This show is going to have the shortest rehearsal progress. We actually open in two and a half weeks, and we have three acts to get through.
My biggest priority right now is going to be memorization! I spend a lot of my free time between my classes memorizing lines. I’ll bunker down in the coffee shop on campus or I’ll find a nice spot outside. I try to not hide out in my apartment because it helps me to get out of the space where I live because I’m tempted to take a nap or relax more.
I’ve always been coming up with character choices for myself. Using a bit of the method I talked about once when my character has a secret that only I know. Except, one of those secrets, I have let my scene partner know since it’s something that’s a secret between us.
This show requires me to be a lot more sexual than I actually am lol. So, that’s been real interesting. Having to find and unlock this flirty and sensual side of myself so that I can play up the comedy. A big part of that is connecting with my scene partner, and building trust with him so that we both feel comfortable enough to bring that tension to life.

Finding Focus: Exploring the Power of Public Solitude in Acting
The stage lights are blinding, the audience a sea of expectant faces. In this electrifying atmosphere, actors must create a world of their own, embodying characters and emotions with complete conviction. But how do they achieve this level of focus while surrounded by so much external stimuli? The answer lies in a seemingly paradoxical concept: public solitude. Pioneered by the legendary Russian…

finally understanding my acting classes a bit more. Just two days ago I was complaining to my aunt that I hated acting.... I just don't like improvising much, but I know it's an important skill to develop, specially in live theater. If I see it that way, I can do it. If I have more focused directions I can do it.

fluff fic where r is obsessed with taking pics of kafka somehow made me wonder if like what if director r and actor kafka...
like kafka's a very well known actress, her influence in psychological thriller movies cannot be denied... and any movies that kafka stars in and is directed by r is always expected to be a box office hit... like there is this special way r potrays kafka that no other film director can cuz of how the emotional connection between them or something something
in a way, r is the muse of kafka in violinist au, she keeps playing cuz she thinks only r can make it perfect. so maybe it can be the reverse here and r is the one who is obsesssive. like it's still gearing in my head...
im gonna lose my mind. im gonna LOSE MY MINDDDD UGH YOUR BRAIN. GIVE IT TO ME. director x their darling actor is so fucking good… every director has that one actor they love working with and who is used to their way of doing things so the process is a lot smoother and imagining that with kaf is causing me heart palpitations she would be such a good actress😭😭😭😭😭😭 love that you said she plays in psych thrillers (her fav movies). omfg celebrity!kafka always gets me because she has the aura for it fr… shes so suave and elegant and sexy she would easily be a media darling. combined with r who can bring out skills she didnt know she had, they’d be thee hottest duo on earth im so giddy rn. obsessive r who has to have kafka in projects that are close to their heart, who pushes her acting/retention abilities further than anyone has before, who encourages her to use the meisner technique because it’s easier for her to focus on everything else and draw from that rather than connecting with her own emotional self— UGHHHHHH YES. the first time they work together everyone’s shocked at the final product because it’s a side of kafka they’ve never seen before… you can tell whoever shot that movie loved her down IM GIGGLING SO HARD RN HGFFJFDSHSA NEEEEEED I NEED IT. kafka’s always acting in one way or another, director!r would be the one to see past those layers and unravel her for the cameras… director!r who constantly takes shots of her outside of the studio just to experiment with her different facets through film. director!r who gets her that oscar and helps her achieve her dreams ough this is so good. what if they’re the one who sought her out… they saw her play in a movie and thought she might be perfect for this lead role in a film they’re making. they have her audition and are instantly blown away not because her skills are perfect but because she can be molded into all these different roles with the right guidance and they’re confident they can make her great. they revolve their cast around who compliment her best. she embodies their vision so well they lowkey dont wanna work with anyone else again… and shes spoiled asffff anything she needs to do her job perfectly, she gets. she’s as protected from the media as she can be and everything, they just cant say no to her (which she’d lowkey abuse). losing my mind rn……

Hi cheeky monkeys! Did you have any favourite theatre games? What acting techniques did you study in the acting schools? I'm quite obsessed with movement, mainly locomotion and gestures. Have you done any study on animal movements in drama classes? Seen some gameodens being shared around and smeg it, George I LOVE your facial expressions! (Jayden I still love your Twitch streams, lemme love George with this 🤫) Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast with more requests!
Transcript below:
"J: Tan! Once again, wow! This is becoming, just, yeah, I-I can’t even, I can’t even put it into words, but, anyway let’s go! J: “Hi cheeky monkeys. Did you have any theatre games? What acting techniques did you study in the acting schools?” G: Um, I, the earliest kind of theatre game I remember is “splat!” Which is a great one and “Zip, Zap, Boing!” That’s always a big energy booster. Um, and in terms of acting techniques? Uh, one that I think is, uh, particularly great for screen acting is the “Meisner Technique.” G: Um, you also said, you’re “quite obsessed with movement. Mainly locomotion and gestures. Have you done any study of animal movements in drama classes or anything alternative?” J: Oh! When I did a short film in 2013 {"Mohammed"], I was feeling really nervous, uh, because it was my first time on camera, and our director, Mustapha Kseibati, made me walk around the room like an eagle. And at the time, I didn’t know why he was doing it, but I realised it was just to bring me out of my shell, and d’you know what? There was something quite primal about it, and I think it brought out like a fire within me and it was great. Um, “I’ve seen some Gameodens being shared around in and smeg it, George—“ G: Amazing, thank you so much, Tan, for all of these things. We’re so grateful. Um, and, uh, every—like we said—every time it’s like you’re a Dead Boy Detective super fan. So props to you. Take care, Tan!"

Keeper Test Shoot

General Notes on Shoot
I felt the shoot was a success, getting the performances I was looking for, and being happy with all the visuals and sounds captured on the day. The working relationship I have with everyone I think is great, nobody overstepped any roles and we built a great relationship with Merchiston North Football Club. We finished an hour ahead of schedule thanks to Rosie’s Assistant directing skills, and the actors and crew were all fed and happy throughout the day. A very successful test shoot in my opinion. Definitely areas to improve which I will touch on in a moment but we are on the right track for the main shoot.
Directing Notes on Shoot
On the test shoot, I worked closely with Lewis (Will) and Stuart (Coach,) as well as, worked alongside Claire (2nd AD) to “herd” 8 supporting actors through a blocking. My objective for this shoot is through the research I have been doing on Meisner and Adler. Going to classes that Catriona Macinnes is running with the 3rd year acting students (How I Met Lewis) and through my research of Ken Loach techniques and directing methods on actors. I learned about improvisation and keeping truthfulness in a performance. Now, what does that even mean? What I think I learned on the shoot is the more you can surprise your actor and keep that reaction as authentic as possible, there is nothing better. So on the shoot, I purposefully kept Stuart away from Lewis to keep that hierarchy and asked the actors Lewis was trying to get the attention of to “be difficult to command” This really caused Lewis to struggle with controlling the football team as well as keep that feeling you get when you are around an adult who is a professional. I also wanted to keep everyone warm and really get across this feeling that Stuart was in control so I asked him to do a training session when everyone was in costume.

However, due to focusing so much on performance, I do feel I was not properly focusing on the tone and feeling of the piece. By not clearly communicating my vision to HoD I feel that the project suffered because of it. I am the only one to blame for this and this caused Alex (Cinematographer) and I to rethink the way we approach projects, as this shoot taught me I currently have a very collaborative documentary approach to making short fiction films. Whilst, this is beneficial in getting everyone included in the discussions on the film, it doesn’t give the production a vision to shoot for, relying more heavily on the edit to produce the final film. I don’t mind this, but the way we shot the film was very streamlined and specific which does not work the best with a more documentary approach in mind.

Going forward, I am going to try and have a clearer vision when communicating to my team, I think I am there with my actors but my vision with the crew is lacking. Thank goodness I have such a caring team working alongside me.

FILE: 지노 _ PLOT CALL _ q4 — this is totally late but we'd definitely like to plot and get things rolling if anyone still has some room on their trackers. below the cut are some suggestions / ideas to jumpstart a thread ! ◡̈
SUB: EVENT
⤷ RE: ACTING MISSION
new actor trainee, moon jino reporting for duty !
improv study — you overheard jino listening to a youtube video that's verbalizing improv cues, you just so happen to see him right when he's supposed to act out a demoralizing heartbreak or his personal interpretation of a fish out of water -- either or, both are equally as mortifying for him.
acting techniques — specifically the meisner technique: unfortunately for jino he got called on in class to counter react a partner's acting, you just so happened to notice jino, not so in his elemental, appearing quite obviously taken back by such a display. for lack of better word, it's hilarious and something that needs to be commented on after (or more amusingly, during) class.
any other acting mission ideas, welcome!
⤷ RE: LGC HALLOWEEN 2023
costume tbd he's going as jock spiderman ◡̈
jino didn't know the candies were fake — sure there were signs, but jino can't read 🤷♂️ — and now the candy is lodged in his throat and oh no, is he choking? nah — forcefully dispelling air through the tiny hole in his throat that's currently blocked by a pea-sized fake sweet treat is not choking, is it?
insert thread about costumes that i will update once i 100% narrow down jino's costume options
"i love you, i swear i do, but we're not wearing matching costumes."
idk much about the carpet but best believe jino is gonna will smith-jada moment whoever is beside him at that moment

running into jino on the way to the bathroom a la haikyuu boot camp jump scare w jino being backlit by the bathroom lighting and his tall ass frame he's practically a slenderman cosplay at night
jino standing in the back of the show me your face game ( mostly bc he's so tall and worried about blocking anyone ) until he realizes that's the point of the game and he's gonna be using his huge af hands to block out the faces of his fellow tall giants
jino 100% mingling and moving from table to table during lunch, also him trying to hand off his kiwis to people bc he doesn't like the fruit kiwi
him dumping flour all over the person behind him's head bc his arms are too long and his reach is too high and inadvertently covering them in flour 🤝 jino trying not to laugh as he tries to help them wipe their face w a wet towel after

🔥 Is Your Feed on Fire? The Hidden Algorithmic Sparks Behind Body Mod Visibility 🔥
We've all been there: scrolling through a feed filled with stunning tattoos, bold piercings, and jaw-dropping body modification. Yeah, it’s undoubtedly a visual feast showcasing human creativity and self-expression.
But the question is, why did this particular piercing went viral, or why that incredible tattoo artist seems to dominate your "explore" page? Prepare to have your perception tweaked, because there's more to online body mod visibility than meets the eye.
Carah and Dobson (2016) talked about "body heat" on social media. This term refers to certain hot female bodies that attract attention in the context of nightlife (Carah & Dobson, 2016, p.1). Similarly, in the realm of body modification, body heat means the images aligning with dominant, often "hetero-sexy" visual codes that might generate more algorithmic "heat" through increased likes, shares, and saves (Carah & Dobson, 2016, p.1). That’s right, instead of a neutral reflection of user interest, the algorithm learns to prioritize images aligning with what is already deemed "hot" (Carah & Dobson, 2016, p.1). This raises critical questions: Whose bodies and modifications are considered "hot" and therefore visible? And how does this algorithmic bias potentially silence or obscure body modifications that challenge these narrow standards? The initial virality of a post isn't solely based on artistic merit but is significantly influenced by its adherence to pre-existing, often exclusionary, aesthetic norms that the algorithm learns to favor (Carah & Dobson, 2016, p.1).
This algorithmic prioritization intertwines with Drenten, Gurrieri, and Tyler's analysis of "sexualized labour" in digital culture. They argue that many influencers, particularly women, engage in embodied performances, often adopting a "porn chic" aesthetic, to garner attention and potential monetization (Drenten et al., 2019, pp. 42-43). Showcasing body modifications can become intertwined with a "porn chic" aesthetic, utilizing specific poses, styling, and editing techniques to cater to certain ideals of attractiveness and capture valuable attention (Drenten et al., 2019, p.42). The "flawlessly filtered, perfectly posed shot" isn't just self-expression; it can be a calculated act of digital labour aimed at capturing the algorithm's attention and, by extension, a wider audience (Carah & Dobson, 2016, p.8). So, that seemingly effortless, artfully angled shot of a new tattoo? It could be part of a calculated digital performance aimed at maximizing visibility and potential monetization.
But here’s a crucial reality check, as highlighted by Duffy and Meisner's work on "platform governance at the margins": the digital playing field isn't level. Algorithms aren't neutral; they can exhibit biases, leading to uneven visibility (Duffy & Meisner, 2022, p.387). Creators from marginalized communities or those showcasing body modifications that deviate from mainstream norms often experience algorithmic visibility (Duffy & Meisner, 2022, p.285). This can manifest as content moderation or biased algorithmic boosts that inadvertently suppress "non-normative" expressions (Duffy & Meisner, 2022, p.285). That unique and boundary-pushing body art you were hoping to discover? It might be getting algorithmically sidelined, preventing it from reaching a wider audience.
Then, how do we navigate this algorithmically influenced landscape?
Well, be aware that what's popular isn't necessarily representative of the full spectrum of body modification artistry (Duffy & Meisner, 2022, p.300). You need to actively seek out diverse creators and styles that might not always dominate your main feed. Engaging with creators showcasing a wide range of body modifications, identities, and artistic approaches will be great as well. Your likes, shares, and thoughtful comments can help challenge algorithmic biases and boost marginalized voices (Duffy & Meisner, 2022, p.300). And understand that creating compelling content and navigating algorithmic pressures, potential biases, and content moderation can be demanding and often unpaid work for creators, especially those from marginalized communities (Duffy & Meisner, 2022, p.285). They might even resort to self-censorship or circumvention tactics to avoid algorithmic penalties (Duffy & Meisner, 2022, p.285).

MED 472 - Brennan Henderson - Blog 2 (Week 2)
Five different ways a director can motivate an actor to get an end result is to have actors be believable (i.e. they play their roles in a way that is realistic and that resonates with the audience), have actors be vulnerable (i.e. they play roles that involve emotion and dealing with the unknown), make sure they understand their roles (i.e. know what the character is about and who the character is), have actors collaborate with you (i.e. make sure actors are being positive off-screen and that the director and actor can work together to make the project better), and have actors freely bring their creativity out and be surprising (i.e. the actors should be allowed to bring what they believe is good for the role they are playing within pre-made character parameters/qualities).
Asking questions can be used as a directing technique by getting together with actors/actresses and asking them questions like, "Based on the facts of who the character is, how do you see the character based on your experience?" Another example would be asking crew members, "What ideas do you have that may align with the overall vision I have in mind of the film?" The overall goal is collaboration, and asking questions is a way to be humble as a director and open yourself up to other peoples ideas that you may find more appealing for your vision than what you previously had in mind.
The "Technique of the Possible Three" is a directing technique that employs "As if...", "What if...", and "It's like when...". This directing technique works as having a Plan A (Have a plan), Plan B (Have a back-up plan), and Plan C (Have a back-up plan for the back-up plan). It also serves as using suggestions when necessary for a line and/or scene that calls for something different.
The five schools of Acting Techniques consist of Stanislavski's Method (this method is about playing character's based on the character's circumstances throughout a story), the Chekhov Acting Technique (this technique is all about physical motions and interactions, also about the sub-concious), Method Acting (this acting technique involves being as real as possible with emotions and using you're background to better the performance; becoming the character in real life), the Meisner Acting Technique (this one deals with improv; in other words, coming up with something on the spot for the role your playing), and the Practical Aesthetics Acting Technique (this technique is about entering into the character's world and embracing the identity of the character for a more realistic performance).
In Directing Actors (Judith Weston), the "In The Moment" section describes how we as actors should perform our roles in the moment, instead of overthinking the process and trying to find the "right" way to perform; it's a means of letting go of real life and just act. The "Character Has Free Will" describes attaching free will to the character you're playing to give a character more of a real feel for the audience instead of a "robotic" feel, as in the character having to deal with the unknown; a way to make the character and audience relate. In "The Character Has A Subconscious Mind", it's mentioned that the actor should let the character "borrow" his/her subconscious mind, and, in doing so, be courageous when acting despite what goes on in the subconscious. Finally, in "Permission To Fail", it simply talks about how directors should give actors the ability to make mistakes (since we're all human) in trying to act out an idea the director has come up with; this makes the actor/actress more comfortable in acting out their roles in trying to give their best performances.
An end result is something directors expect out of actors and their performances when it comes to their vision of what they hope to be the finished product of a film, show, etc. Directors should avoid this because it makes them look like puppeteers and micromanagers. Directors should be open-minded and focus on being more collaborative with actors and other crew members alike and allow them their creative freedom in bringing about their vision.
