Rehearsals for show #1 have begun! This show is going to have the shortest rehearsal progress. We actually open in two and a half weeks, and we have three acts to get through.
My biggest priority right now is going to be memorization! I spend a lot of my free time between my classes memorizing lines. I’ll bunker down in the coffee shop on campus or I’ll find a nice spot outside. I try to not hide out in my apartment because it helps me to get out of the space where I live because I’m tempted to take a nap or relax more.
I’ve always been coming up with character choices for myself. Using a bit of the method I talked about once when my character has a secret that only I know. Except, one of those secrets, I have let my scene partner know since it’s something that’s a secret between us.
This show requires me to be a lot more sexual than I actually am lol. So, that’s been real interesting. Having to find and unlock this flirty and sensual side of myself so that I can play up the comedy. A big part of that is connecting with my scene partner, and building trust with him so that we both feel comfortable enough to bring that tension to life.

Learning that Ewan Michell uses Method Acting (a combination of like 4 different teachers to create its core) makes me so happy and him explaining it made me HAPPIER bc dammit the extreme stuff that some main stream actors do is um not really it it shouldn't be that intense and shouldn't be used as an excuse to be a dick

Finding Focus: Exploring the Power of Public Solitude in Acting
The stage lights are blinding, the audience a sea of expectant faces. In this electrifying atmosphere, actors must create a world of their own, embodying characters and emotions with complete conviction. But how do they achieve this level of focus while surrounded by so much external stimuli? The answer lies in a seemingly paradoxical concept: public solitude. Pioneered by the legendary Russian…

Keeper Test Shoot
General Notes on Shoot
I felt the shoot was a success, getting the performances I was looking for, and being happy with all the visuals and sounds captured on the day. The working relationship I have with everyone I think is great, nobody overstepped any roles and we built a great relationship with Merchiston North Football Club. We finished an hour ahead of schedule thanks to Rosie’s Assistant directing skills, and the actors and crew were all fed and happy throughout the day. A very successful test shoot in my opinion. Definitely areas to improve which I will touch on in a moment but we are on the right track for the main shoot.
Directing Notes on Shoot
On the test shoot, I worked closely with Lewis (Will) and Stuart (Coach,) as well as, worked alongside Claire (2nd AD) to “herd” 8 supporting actors through a blocking. My objective for this shoot is through the research I have been doing on Meisner and Adler. Going to classes that Catriona Macinnes is running with the 3rd year acting students (How I Met Lewis) and through my research of Ken Loach techniques and directing methods on actors. I learned about improvisation and keeping truthfulness in a performance. Now, what does that even mean? What I think I learned on the shoot is the more you can surprise your actor and keep that reaction as authentic as possible, there is nothing better. So on the shoot, I purposefully kept Stuart away from Lewis to keep that hierarchy and asked the actors Lewis was trying to get the attention of to “be difficult to command” This really caused Lewis to struggle with controlling the football team as well as keep that feeling you get when you are around an adult who is a professional. I also wanted to keep everyone warm and really get across this feeling that Stuart was in control so I asked him to do a training session when everyone was in costume.
However, due to focusing so much on performance, I do feel I was not properly focusing on the tone and feeling of the piece. By not clearly communicating my vision to HoD I feel that the project suffered because of it. I am the only one to blame for this and this caused Alex (Cinematographer) and I to rethink the way we approach projects, as this shoot taught me I currently have a very collaborative documentary approach to making short fiction films. Whilst, this is beneficial in getting everyone included in the discussions on the film, it doesn’t give the production a vision to shoot for, relying more heavily on the edit to produce the final film. I don’t mind this, but the way we shot the film was very streamlined and specific which does not work the best with a more documentary approach in mind.
Going forward, I am going to try and have a clearer vision when communicating to my team, I think I am there with my actors but my vision with the crew is lacking. Thank goodness I have such a caring team working alongside me.

FILE: 지노 _ PLOT CALL _ q4 — this is totally late but we'd definitely like to plot and get things rolling if anyone still has some room on their trackers. below the cut are some suggestions / ideas to jumpstart a thread ! ◡̈
SUB: EVENT
⤷ RE: ACTING MISSION
new actor trainee, moon jino reporting for duty !
improv study — you overheard jino listening to a youtube video that's verbalizing improv cues, you just so happen to see him right when he's supposed to act out a demoralizing heartbreak or his personal interpretation of a fish out of water -- either or, both are equally as mortifying for him.
acting techniques — specifically the meisner technique: unfortunately for jino he got called on in class to counter react a partner's acting, you just so happened to notice jino, not so in his elemental, appearing quite obviously taken back by such a display. for lack of better word, it's hilarious and something that needs to be commented on after (or more amusingly, during) class.
any other acting mission ideas, welcome!
⤷ RE: LGC HALLOWEEN 2023
costume tbd he's going as jock spiderman ◡̈
jino didn't know the candies were fake — sure there were signs, but jino can't read 🤷♂️ — and now the candy is lodged in his throat and oh no, is he choking? nah — forcefully dispelling air through the tiny hole in his throat that's currently blocked by a pea-sized fake sweet treat is not choking, is it?
insert thread about costumes that i will update once i 100% narrow down jino's costume options
"i love you, i swear i do, but we're not wearing matching costumes."
idk much about the carpet but best believe jino is gonna will smith-jada moment whoever is beside him at that moment
any other halloween ideas, welcome!
⤷ RE: LGC RETREAT
he's in lgc agency as an actor but he got placed with crystallis !
ghost hunting at the haunted high school x excited puppy jino
jino 100% trying to do a hsm! scream parody of troy bolton along the lockers
running into jino on the way to the bathroom a la haikyuu boot camp jump scare w jino being backlit by the bathroom lighting and his tall ass frame he's practically a slenderman cosplay at night
jino standing in the back of the show me your face game ( mostly bc he's so tall and worried about blocking anyone ) until he realizes that's the point of the game and he's gonna be using his huge af hands to block out the faces of his fellow tall giants
jino 100% mingling and moving from table to table during lunch, also him trying to hand off his kiwis to people bc he doesn't like the fruit kiwi
him dumping flour all over the person behind him's head bc his arms are too long and his reach is too high and inadvertently covering them in flour 🤝 jino trying not to laugh as he tries to help them wipe their face w a wet towel after

"i really appreciate that you're getting into the halloween spirit, but it's ten in the morning. please turn off the slasher films so i can eat my breakfast in peace."
"what do you mean you've never gone trick-or-treating?!" — but rather than going door to door it's convenience store to convenience store and jino footing the bill on the sweet or salty treats 😋
"you're like the toughest person i know! am i really supposed to believe that a horror film is enough to have you cowering into my lap?"
"hot cocoa is the americano equivalent for kids!" "your point is?"
"how to look suspicious 101"

Explaining acting to an alien
Terry spent most of this lesson explaining to us the philosophy behind the Meisner technique and the importance of training in general.
Hitting the mark consistently. Far too many people in the acting world accept that when taking on a role, they might not hit the mark 100% of the time. Wouldn't it suck if plumbers had this same attitude towards plumbing? Imagine what the world (and our pipes) would be like if it was normal to call a plumber to fix a leak, and be told that there is a 20% chance that they won't succeed. Actors should aim to be at a skill level where they can deliver 100% of the time.
Perfectionism - we're not born with it. There is this weirdly common myth that people who can act are just born with everything they need to put on flawless performances. In reality, learning to act is like learning anything else. You have to fail to get better. We've all done it before, this learning from zero thing. We've had to do it to learn how to walk and talk.

It’s not from method, it’s from Stanislavski’s System. Method originated from Stanislavski’s System and is an American offshoot developed primarily by Lee Strasburg, which takes the elements of the System to a more extreme level with immersive method acting. Actually, all those techniques you describe are from the System.
Now, people tend to attribute more to the System and Method than actually exists. For example, focusing entirely on the other person and considering them the only “real thing” rather than your own internal thoughts is the Meisner technique and then Stella Adler’s method is about imagining a character’s world through small senses like sound and minor details.
I use the System mostly, like the majority of Western actors. There are other methods like classical or Brechtian or Practical Aesthetics. It’s really what works for the actor.
But honestly, Method is the most extreme and - certainly in my opinion - the least effective one. The only thing I’ll agree with Hitchcock on is that it creates a “poor photograph” and not a rich picture.
I also refuse to method act because I get a lot of abused and mentally unwell characters and I like being mentally stable :)
