[MMX] Future Me Hates Me: Part 1
Summary: After stumbling upon a Light Capsule, and having it erroneously refer to her as Kalinka, Aero seeks to figure out just what her family connection is to Doctor Light. Meanwhile, after the death of Iris, Zero vows to absolve himself of his past. However, as Aero becomes the target of a Maverick, Zero is forced into finding that not all bridges can easily be burned…

. . . .
He could smell fire and the scorched steel of dismembered Reploid parts. This was Hell. The landscape below him was a blurry mess of fire and smoke. No one could have made it out of this carnage alive. Reploids would have fallen from the force of the attack, the humans would have choked on the fumes alone. In the farthest distance he could still hear them. Their pain, their agony, their wishes to simply die a swift death. He could make that all come true. His buster was already gaining energy again despite the last blast being seconds prior. What could possibly stop him?
This was his destiny.
“I thought you were stronger than this.”
He turned around, demanding to know who would insult his strength. All functions nearly stopped processing when he realized she was there. Charming, as always, her smile held no shame for the damage he’s done so far. Her green eyes looked a bit sad, however.
“How dare you mock me!” he demanded, pointing his charged buster right for her face. She didn’t flinch. She didn’t even look worried.
“We both know I could never.” she dully laughed. She then looked at him and placed her hand right on his buster. “And you know that wasn’t what I meant, Zero. You’re more than your fate. Always were. Keep fighting a bit longer, for both of us. That was why I left our world in your hands.”
“Iris…”
She was right. She was always right. And now she was gone- dead by his own hands. He would never meet someone like her again. Ever.
Iris gave him a small smile as she ventured closer to him. The kiss she pressed against his forehead dispelled any and all thoughts of hurt.
“Wake up Zero.” she beckoned. “Wake. Up.”
Zero’s eyes snapped open immediately.
He was in his room at Maverick Hunters HQ, apparently failing at going into sleep mode. The red Hunter carefully sat his body up as he recalled his dream. He rubbed his fingers against his temples.
“It hasn’t even been a month yet…” he groaned to himself. “I thought Reploids weren’t supposed to dream. Tch.”
A small deep coming from Zero’s headset further brought him back to reality. Giving a traceback indicated it was coming from one of the Maverick Hunter’s Navigators. Zero placed a hand against his helmet’s headset, allowing the call to go through.
“Zero here. Talk to me.”
“I’m sorry to interrupt your day off, Zero,” the Navigator on the other end said, “But there is Maverick activity on the southern coast, and it was recommended that you look into it.”
“I’ll be in the briefing room soon, then.”
“Excellent. Thank you Zero.”
Zero grimaced as he disconnected the line.
“I’m starting to see why X thinks being a Hunter is exhausting.,” he hissed under his breath as he left his room. “Humans should be grateful that they never have to go through this like Reploids do.”
. . .
‘I think I’d rather be a Reploid right now.’
Aero was mentally exhausted. She had already been dreading this excavation project for the last three months. Everyone involved even knew she understood precious little of what they were looking for. It was all in honor of Dr Cain, they said, to give his legacy something good to reflect on.
Finding X should have been where Cain's legacy started and ended. It was the only piece of history to carry on for all Aero cared. At this point, hardly anyone remembered that Sigma was built by Cain to begin with. The atrocities the Reploid made outweighed why he existed to begin with. That was why being a Reploid instead of human sounded a lot more appealing to the young woman. Reploids generally didn’t have families. They didn’t have to carry on someone else’s legacy.
“This looks like a good spot to stop for the day.” the team leader, a Reploid, decided.
Aero gave a glance around the area. It was at the foot of a very tall cliff face. Orange-brown and weathered to the point of being too smooth to scale safely, Aero knew full well that they would have to move around the structure instead of straight up. Not that she was joining this expedition for long. They just needed her to take a few photos for various news outlets, and then she was home free. Her interests lied with software and programming, not… rock climbing.
The team she was with were pretty nice folks, though. There was the team leader, two other Reploids, and then a human that wasn’t Aero herself. It was the Reploids that Aero got along with better. The other human, a researcher, decided that Aero was beneath them the moment she walked in the room. The Reploids had greeted her with warmth. One -a cartographer- knew of Cain and wanted to extend their awestruck wonder at someone related to someone famous. The other -a tour guide of the area- was more interested in Aero herself. They knew she was related to Mikhail Cossack, and that threw Aero for a loop. It had been a long time since anyone had made that connection.
As the group settled down for the day, Aero’s mind drifted to the legacies around her. Most of all, she wondered if she cared if she would have one someday. Death didn’t concern Aero. There were times not long ago that she wished for it. But thinking on the idea of a legacy was what kept her awake. It took an hour after everyone else was asleep, but she couldn’t handle it. Aero left her tent and started to pace around camp.
Pacing, apparently, did not help much.
Aero’s feet slowly started to take her further and further away from the camp. She didn’t consider that she forget to bring a light with her until after the camp was all but a speck of light away. By then, there was a different light. An odd glow that came from deeper inside the cavern network.
“Anything’s better than hearing myself think…” Aero mumbled to herself before going deeper.
Her refusal to back down -or rather, to self-harm- was rewarded about seven minutes after. The glow led her to a large, open area in the caverns. Placed in the center was a metal object, primarily blue with a red power crystal at the top and four white electrodes along the side. Moving closer to it, Aero came to realize that it was wide enough for a regular Reploid to fit into quite easily. Once she was within arm’s reach of the object, the top started to float in the air. A holographic green seemed to act as walls to what apparently was a capsule instead. From that green wall came the image of a man, someone Aero was sure she recognized from somewhere. She didn’t have to time to gather from where before it started to talk.
“Kalinka, I do not know the circumstances of how you came across this capsule. The fact that you have must mean that X is in trouble. Enter this capsule and take these torso parts. X can use them to further null the damage he takes from close range attacks.”
With that, the hologram of the man disappeared, but the green walls remained up, beckoning her inside with a faint, pleasant glow. It was in that soft warmth that she realized something.
“Kalinka?” she murmured. “That’s… Isn’t that the name of Gran’s mom? There’s no way…”
No one remembered that the Cossack blood faintly flowed through Aero.  The tour guide had been the first in years- possibly even since Reploids became mainstream. No one remembered, except for this capsule. Aero took a step back as she looked over the capsule’s construction some more. It definitely wasn’t anything from this century. Aero soon found herself at an impasse.
“Does X really need these?” she proceeded to muse to herself. “It’s not like we’re actively fighting some maroon who thinks he’s a god…”
‘Not until someone brings Sigma back… again.’ she thought. It was very soon shaken away. Instead, she returned her attention to the capsule. Whatever hologram AI inside certainly wasn’t forcing her to make a choice. If anything, it gave off the aura of a gentle nudge.
“Do I even want to carry, and later explain, how I found torso parts perfectly X sized in a single night?” Aero then asked. The capsule certainly didn’t give any answers- as if calculating the improbability of this situation was within its limits. It was in that thought that Aer came to a conclusion.
“I’ll tell the Hunters about it when I get home. They can contact X faster than I could anyway.”
“If that is what you wish…” the capsule’s hologram voice agreed. The top of the capsule then slid down again, locking in whatever this torso part was until X came along. It still let off its soft glow, but it certainly wasn’t going to open for Aero again.
“I think it’s time to go to bed now,” Aero said to herself, not wasting a moment longer to head back to camp.
. .
The human did not know she had been followed. For too long they have been searching for the Light capsule, and that stupid human found it by wandering like an ingrate! And then to refuse the power within? Worthless. Distasteful. It was a pure and utter disgrace to anyone like them that actively sought them out.
However, the possibility that the capsules could open for someone who wasn’t Mega Man X was fascinating. Remembering that many of the early inventors for what would become Reploids (Light, Wily, Cossack, and so on) were ill documented, or the bloodlines simply ceased to exist made things harder once more. But, perhaps, they should keep an eye on this one human. Her blood history must have had some connection to Light if the capsule responded to her. She could be useful. An unknowing little pawn.
They smiled as they slunk into the shadows once more. Ultimate power would be theirs, sooner or later.

Hello. I'm writing a Mega Man ZX fanfic. This one mostly features OCs that are mine (unless otherwise stated), but also features Biometals primarily based on Classic Mega Man characters (i.e. Mega Man, Guts Man, etc.)
For example, the male protagonist is Rocher (commonly known as "Rokku") and he is the Chosen One for Biometal Model M (MegaMan). He's right down below~ If you're interested, give it a read, please~

So I decided to try one of @/nondelphic's unhinged writing prompts for that Mega Man zombie AU that I mentioned a while ago. The prompt that I specifically chose to write about was this one:
Someone keeps breaking into your character's house, not to steal things but to leave increasingly cryptic notes in their fridge.
So... yeah! Enjoy this short story about Shadow Man struggling to cope with somebody breaking into his cabin for funsies. Oh, and Zero's there too.
Compromised Shelter - A Oneshot
---
The first time it happened, he thought it was his fault.
The generator had only been recently installed, solely so that the fridge would run again (but admittedly, lights and hot water were luxuries Shadow had missed for the past ten years, so of course he wanted to enjoy those, too). They needed it to be able to keep raw meat in the house, as well as anything they couldn't preserve in a jar. That, and the taste of lukewarm canned fruit got old after a while.
The note had been written on a sheet of blank paper, haphazardly taped to the shelf that held whatever they had managed to catch from hunting (or, rather, whatever Shadow managed to catch - Zero had the habit of eating whatever he managed to get a hold of right then and there, but that was fine. Shadow had learned to accept that the boy had his quirks). On it, a single sentence fragment:
Don't forget.
Shadow blinked at it. "Don't forget what?" he found himself asking aloud, confused. Maybe this was something he had written some time ago when he was half-asleep. It wouldn't have been the first time he'd done something strange while in such a state. Once, before the Infected had shown up, he had poured orange juice in his coffee instead of sugar. Not salt. Orange juice. His wife had laughed at him about it for weeks.
Shadow frowned. To use an entire piece of paper to write an unhelpful message to himself... what a waste. He would need to find a way to repurpose it later.
But then it happened again, and it was then Shadow realized something was wrong. This time, the note was taped to the side of the fridge, and had something even weirder written on it.
Your cows need watering.
"I - I don't - my what?" The message made no sense whatsoever. Shadow didn't have any livestock. Did he write this in his sleep again, and mix up the word "crops" with "cows"? That would be the most likely explanation.
But then he saw that the handwriting didn't look like his.
At all.
The letters were too far apart, and Shadow didn't cross his t's in the middle of the letter. Not only that, but it wasn't very neat. And the "o" in "Your" wasn't looped, either.
Long story short, Shadow did not write this.
Realizing that, he decided to try the second-most likely avenue. "Zero?" He called out. "Come here, please!"
The boy was by his side in seconds - he never strayed too far from him. He peered at him, curious. Shadow couldn't help but stare back. Normally, Zero's blue irises would be like beacons against his gray scleras. But today, his scleras seemed to be a bit more white in color. That's a good sign, he thought to himself. Isn't it? He wished that he knew how Zero got like this in the first place, so that these changes would be easier to interpret - not alive in the familiar sense, but most certainly not dead, either. He was almost like the Infected. But there was something about him...
Zero noticed Shadow's staring, and made something of a sniffling sound, trying to figure out what was so interesting about himself for Shadow to be looking at him directly for so long. Shadow cleared his throat, remembering why he had called Zero to the kitchen in the first place. "Did you write this?" He held the note out to Zero for him to examine. He stared at it for a moment, then squinted, trying to read the thing, only to shake his head. "I see..." Shadow folded the note up. If it wasn't him, and if it wasn't Zero...
Then it had to be someone else.
Shadow swallowed, mouth dry. "Let's check all the doors and windows," he suggested. "To make sure no one's been getting in when we sleep." They did exactly that, but they found no openings or signs of forced entry. Shadow pursed his lips when they were finished. Surely something had been left unlocked. He double-checked he'd locked everything properly before turning in for the night.
But then the third note came.
I know who you are.
Well I would hope so, Shadow thought, rolling his eyes. You keep breaking into my house. With that, Shadow decided to take inventory - nothing was missing. Whoever was doing this was leaving the notes as a calling card, and nothing else. It was almost funny, how stupid it was.
But the fourth note was plain unnerving.
They're coming.
Shadow felt his blood run cold. "Who's coming?" He asked himself. He started to panic. Should he try to fortify the house? Or was a horde on its way, and the best course of action would be to simply board up the windows and doors, hide in a closet, and wait it out? Or maybe...
Maybe this was a joke.
Just like all the other notes.
He ripped the fourth note up in frustration. "This is ridiculous," he spat, tearing the paper to shreds. "I will not be made to feel anxious in my own home." He made up his mind - once he found out who was doing this, he was going to shoot first, ask questions later. It would be uncharacteristically violent for him, but every man had his button. And Shadow's had just been pressed.
That night, Shadow planned to stay awake, holding a stakeout of sorts. How else would he find out who had been robbing him of perfectly good paper and his peace of mind? But he hadn't ever done something like that before, and so he naturally made a mistake. He decided to hold the stakeout in his bedroom, so that he could hear the note-writer enter without being seen. However, around two a.m., he dozed off, sleeping comfortably on his bed.
Lucky for him, Zero ended up being a living failsafe, with how light of a sleeper he was. Shadow woke to the blond teen standing by his side and shaking him awake. "Wha- what - Zero? Zero, what are you doing awake?" Zero gestured toward the open door with his head, irritated. But not with Shadow. No, something else was at work here.
A loud thunk could be heard from outside. Shadow sat up in an instant, understanding the situation. "Is someone here?" He whispered. Zero nodded in confirmation, and held up two fingers. "Ah. So two people, then." Shadow got up and grabbed his rifle. "Get behind me."
Shadow crept out of his room carefully, with Zero following his lead. He moved to the top of the staircase, and sure enough, he could hear shuffling sounds from below. "Human, or Infected?"
Zero moved closer, and became completely still. He focused on every sound the intruders made, staring out into the darkness. He sniffed the air once, and then made his determination. "Human," he said, with absolute certainty, voice quieter than Shadow's footsteps had been.
"Alright then - thank you." Shadow hurriedly thought of a course of action. He and Zero would make their way downstairs, and once they were close enough to the intruders, he would turn the lights on, catching them off guard. Then, he could see if they were worth shooting (his nap had calmed him down, and he had started to go back to his usual mode of operation: shooting only if someone was a threat).
But Zero had another idea.
He swiftly started to go downstairs, and disappeared into the darkness. "Zero!" Shadow whisper-yelled. "You don't have to-" A loud growling sound from Zero's throat cut him off. Shadow knew what that meant. He fumbled for a light switch, now trying to save the people who broke into his house instead of shoot them.
Because if he didn't, Zero would most definitely take care of them himself.
A shrill scream came from below, followed by snarling that sounded as if it was coming from one of the Infected. Shadow cursed under his breath - he took too long. He finally found the switch, turned it on, and found Zero trying to bite at a woman's neck. Nearby, a man pulled out a gun, wanting to save her. "ZERO!" He shouted, running downstairs to pull him off of her. "That's enough!"
Zero went limp once Shadow had removed him from the girl, clearly getting the message. He relaxed, wriggled himself out of Shadow's grasp, and got behind him, eyes still narrowed viciously at the intruders.
Now it was Shadow's turn to get aggressive. He aimed his gun at the guy, wanting to deal with the one he knew had a weapon first. "Who do you think you are, breaking into my house li- wait a second." His eyes went from the woman to the man, and then back again.
He knew these people.
"You two!" He moved one of his hands to the trigger. "You're part of the group who set off fireworks last week, trying to lure in the Infected on purpose! And you-" he aimed his gun a little more decisively at the young man's chest. "You've already broken in here once before. I shot you in the shoulder then. Should I shoot to kill this time?"
The young man gave Shadow a teasing grin. "C'mon, man! We were just messing around! Right, Plum?" The girl nodded her head, still shaking from her encounter with Zero. She checked her hands and felt around her neck, looking for bites. "It's so boring out here. You should be thankful we moved nearby - it's good to spice things up, you know."
But Shadow clucked his tongue, unamused. "'Boring' is how I like it, thank you." He stole a glance at Zero - he seemed to be thoroughly at ease now, not seeing the intruders as a threat anymore. But he stayed behind Shadow, just in case. Once he was sure the child was okay, Shadow returned to reprimanding the guy. "And I hardly think that breaking and entering and putting yourself in danger are decent ways of 'spicing things up.'"
"Yeah, yeah. I'll admit it. This time was our bad. But last time I was here, you left the door unlocked."
"Because we were outside, working in the garden," Shadow hissed. "And even if every window and door in this house was unlocked, it still wouldn't be an excuse for you to walk in here without seeing if someone lived here first."
The younger man put his hands up, playfully. He wasn't taking this even the slightest bit seriously. "Cool it, big guy. That's in the past, now. Let's just... all move on, yeah?'
Shadow's brow furrowed. "Did - did you just tell me to 'cool it'?" He shook his head, disregarding the statement. "I will let both of you go if you tell me how you kept getting in here, and if you agree not to enter without my consent. If you go back on your word, I'll shoot you on sight."
"Okay, deal. You have a window in your kitchen that pops right out when it's pressed on hard enough. I grab it before it falls, pull it out onto the grass, do what I want, crawl back out, and pop it back into place. Simple."
"Mmhm." He would have to fix that. He'd put the window back into place that night, and properly reseal it in the morning. "Thank you for your cooperation. Now get out."
The two intruders started towards the door. The guy put an arm around the girl ("Plum", was it?). "Aw, relax, babe! You didn't get bit. Blondie's chill. See? Look." The guy went to give what appeared to be a fist-bump to Zero, only for the latter to snap at his hand, growling. "Okay, okay! Not chill, got it." He bid Shadow adieu before he and his girlfriend finally left. "Your generator's loud - it's gonna attract the Infected or somebody at some point. Be careful. I would hate to see you get your face eaten! See y'all later!" They finally left, shutting the door behind them. The guy's laughter was loud enough to be heard outside, and Plum soon joined him in it.
Shadow locked the door, agitated. "Those two," he murmured, "are going to get themselves killed."
"Annoying," Zero huffed as he followed Shadow to the kitchen. He watched as Shadow put the window back into place.
"Agreed," Shadow said when he finished. "They are very annoying." He sighed as he returned to the stairwell to turn the lights out. "But hopefully, this will be the end of us getting random notes in the fridge." He paused before switching the lights off. "Zero," he began, keeping his tone even, "I don't want you attacking people like that. You could've gotten hurt..." and we don't know what would happen if you were to bite someone. "...and I would have been very upset if that were to happen. Okay?" Zero didn't say anything, and instead wrapped his arms around Shadow in a hug, leaning his head against his chest apologetically. "Oh, it's alright. I know you were only trying to help." He placed a hand on Zero's head reassuringly. "Now let's get you back to bed."
---
And that's all for now! Although, I do want to clarify a few things: 1. Shadow Man and Zero are supposed to have an adoptive father-son relationship in this.
2. Although he wasn't named in the story, the guy who breaks into Shadow's house is Quick Man. Homeboy is twenty years old and is delusional as heck. Maybe he'll mature as time goes on (or maybe he'll die). His girlfriend is Plum from Battle & Chase.
3. Shadow missing hot water for ten years is a reference to how the story takes place ten years after the world ended. My guy has been through a lot. But it's okay. Because now he has an entire fifteen-year-old boy to take care of. Welcome to the single dad life, Shadow Man.
4. If you have any questions about this AU, feel free to ask! I want to talk about it. There's a bunch of stuff going on in it.
Thank you for reading! May God bless you. <3

[MMX] Future Me Hates Me: Part 5
Summary: After stumbling upon a Light Capsule, and having it erroneously refer to her as Kalinka, Aero seeks to figure out just what her family connection is to Doctor Light. Meanwhile, after the death of Iris, Zero vows to absolve himself of his past. However, as Aero becomes the target of a Maverick, Zero is forced into finding that not all bridges can easily be burned…
Rating: K+
word Count: 1,720 words
Part: 1, 2, 3, 4, [5]
. . . .
Aero felt weird having to step around the corpses of the Reploids Zero had taken out. She gave each and every one an apology- then right after reminding herself that they had intentions of forcing her to comply. So she opted to mentally spit on them. May they rest in peace, but that’s what they get for going after someone who knows a pretty strong Maverick Hunter.
“I  can’t believe the only thing stopping them was the password.” Zero thoughtfully said out loud. “Never minding the fact they could have just hacked it, what on earth could it have been that they couldn’t guess it before we got here?”
“Do you even know what kalinka is?” Aero mused as she entered her great-grandmother’s birthday.
“It’s the name of your grandmother’s mother. You told me that.”
“Yes, but it’s also a dance set to traditional music bearing the same name. I also think there’s a movie called it too.”
“That’s just stupid. Who would guess those dates before ever thinking about your descendant?”
Aero turned to Zero as the vault unlocked. She was grinning as she asked, “Are you really going to tell them that now?”
Zero took a glance at the dead Reploids and soon shook his head. Aero laughed as she opened the vault door- Zero helping a bit when it seemed to get stuck on its own old hinges.
The vault was all but empty. A few shelves lining the walls had some old paper documents that looked quite worn and yellowed. But near the dead center of the vault was a familiar capsule. It came to life the moment both Aero and Zero entered the vault. From its center, the green wall familiar in all the capsules started to project an image of an equally familiar man. Zero tensed slightly at its form.
“Hello, descendant of Mikhail Cossack.” the capsule’s hologram said to them in slightly archaic Russian.
“Oh…” Aero sheepishly mumbled. “I… I’m not that good with Russian. The language I use now is fine, if you’re able to copy that.”
The hologram nodded, then repeated in a language they better understood, “Hello, descendant of Mikhail Cossack. I am sure that you have many questions after finding me here. How would you like to proceed?”
Zero and Aero gave each other a glance.
“I have a few, actually.” Aero admitted. “If you’re able to answer them, or don’t have a timer, or something.”
“We have all the time in the world, young one.”
“Right…” Aero mumbled under her breath. She then gave a shake of her head before addressing the hologram proper again. “A few days ago, another one of these weird capsules called me Kalinka- my great-grandmother’s name. One of the things I wanted to know was why. Why would one of these capsules anticipate a member of the Cossack family? The goon we just fought outside made it seem like no one could activate one of these capsules, so why could I?”
“An understandable request.” the hologram nodded. “Relaying video data from February 20XX.”
“Well, this ought to be interesting.” Zero mused, folding his arms.
The hologram lost its form before taking on the shape of a large rectangle. Becoming a short of screen, there was some static before giving way to the image of a very tired old man. Plump, sporting a white beard, and almost resembling Santa Claus in his own right, there before Zero and Aero was one of the last video diaries of Doctor Thomas Light.
“This is a message for Kalinka Cossack, or any of her descendants that were able to gain access to their family storage.” Doctor Light said in the recording. “I’m sure you will have many questions, and I’m afraid I can only explain one of them; why you are able to access these capsules.
“You see, for the past decade or so, I have been trying to tap into the ‘X Factor’ of what could bridge the gap between robots and humans. As of this week, I believe my final product, Mega Man X, is ready to undergo his testing. My health has declined quite a bit in this time. I know I will never be able to see him when the tests are finished. But that’s alright. There are many in this world who never knew their own parents, or even a family at all.
“But you, Kalinka, should be there to help him awaken. If not you, then I pray for a family member who embodies your unique spirit. X will need that kind of encouragement. It will help him grow to be the symbol of hope I know him to be. This will be an incredible responsibility, Kalinka- but I believe in you. I believe that the two of you could be friends, just like you were with Rock and Roll.
“I’ve created capsules like this one to help X should the time call for it. Only three are able to open them; X, yourself, and a potentially third that may land me in trouble should he choose a path of darkness. Knowing his creator, however, I do wish he is able to change for the better given the proper opportunity. This was done so that no one is able to abuse the power within X- the power to adapt, to endlessly grow, to feel and think just like a human. There is a reason for the testing I wish for X to go through. To that extent, only ones deemed worthy can fully access all the information I have left to offer this world. Consider it a modern Prometheus conundrum. If the fire of knowledge is in the wrong hands, it could burn more than just wood.
“As much as I need to explain further, that is all the time I have for now, Kalinka. Please know that it is still your choice to care for X. You never have to accept the armors within the capsules if you wish. They will always be locked to others passing by for that reason. All I desire is that you remember that, even in loss, we are all still together. Best wishes, Doctor Thomas Light.”
With that, the screen went back to static and the hologram once more took the form of Doctor Light.
“Why build X, then?” Zero questioned. He didn’t even have the time to stop himself. “Doctor Light already had a legacy. He’s the reason why we have half the technology we do- even before X.”
“Nothing can replace the heart of a loved one.” the hologram calmly told him. “Legacies are more than the patents with your name on them, or stories told far after your passing. They are the people you love and dedicated time to. The ones who remember you long after you took your last breath. This was why X was to be made- to be loved and loved in return by the people who matter to him most.”
Zero immediately scrunched his face in disgust.
“Serves me right for asking a stupid question…” he mumbled to himself.
“And Kalinka?” Aero quietly spoke up. “She didn’t find X. This whole bunker had been abandoned for decades. I didn’t even know about this place until a day ago. What was her, my family’s, connection to Doctor Light, and why did it just… stop?”
“I can not answer this fully,” the hologram told her. “However, do know that there was a great time of loss before Mega Man X underwent his safety protocols. It is possible that she chose not to take on the responsibility, to better preserve the memories of those she loved.”
“So she ignored it.” Aero decided. She gave a dark side glance to Zero before adding, “That sounds familiar.”
“Perhaps,” the hologram agreed, “At the same time, grief is not linear. Kalinka may have intended to take X in, on her own time, but that time became overshadowed by other responsibilities. Becoming a mother, perhaps. Medical emergencies or other unexpected costs that barred one to suddenly care for a new housemate. She may have even chosen not to in the end. As per Doctor’s Light wish, it was her choice in the end. Is this all you wish to know?”
“Yeah.” Aero agreed. She looked a bit smaller now, as if a small, terrifying thought came to her.
“I don’t have any other questions either.” Zero agreed. His body had become more stiff. He would be considering the hologram’s words for awhile.
“Very well then,” the hologram nodded. The capsule slowly went through the motions of being placed on standby again- almost as if it were waiting for the duo to change their mind. Once it was collapsed again, the vault filled with an eerie silence.
“We should start heading back.” Zero eventually said. Aero’s only reply was a small nod.
. . .
To her surprise, Zero joined Aero on the flight home. He even paid extra out of pocket to sit next to her! Aero went out of her way to annoy him for the first two or so hours. It was a comfort to have him at his familiar level of grump again.
“So we’re never telling X about the capsule in the vault, right?” Aero asked as she tried to find the most irritating method to open a bag of peanuts.
“Nope.” Zero affirmed. “It’s not like X has any interest in them to begin with. They find him.”
“Fair enough.” Aero nodded. She hummed a little as she popped each peanut into her mouth, one at a time. With each chew, her mind was brought back to something in particular.
“Hey, Zero?”
“Yes?”
“You know how you feel for Iris right now? One day, it’s going to happen to X too.”
Zero held onto the airplane seat’s armrest a bit tighter.
“I’ve been aware.” he admitted in a dark voice.
“When that time comes, I want you to do something for me. Because X… X is different. He won’t have someone to tell him to just cry and keep moving. He’ll only have you.”
Zero turned around enough to give her a hard glare.
“What are you getting at?” he questioned.
Aero then looked Zero in the eye, and through a pained smile, she told him what to do.

henlo, megamans ppl, i come bearing two fanfics that tie into my overarching storyline that i started like 4 years ago sobs
(tho no... unfortunately neither of them are the second part because i'm still strugglin thru writing that one out... i'm gomen for anyone who cares)
first fic:
Title: Wherever That Wind Blows, the Destination Is the Same Canon: Megaman X Pairing: none, technically... pre-VAVA/Zero if u squint Summary: Set during the first Sigma-led Maverick Riot and part of the Rekindled fic series, VAVA contemplates the situation he's found himself in while Storm Eagle provides his own observations. They're not exactly wanted. This is basically picking up from where VAVA escapes from Zero's surprise attack at the very beginning of X1. It does tie into my main fic series, but it should be vague/general enough to be readable on its own!
Read it on Archive of Our Own!
second fic:
Title: Down the Beaten Path Canon: Megaman X Pairing: VAVA/Zero Summary: To put it bluntly, this is a "What-If" scenario I wrote as a PWP that takes place during the forest scenes in my fic Unsaid. It's basically just smut for the sake of smut and not canon to the series, so take it or leave it!! I'm not your mom!!
Read it on Archive of Our Own!
lmk what you think! feel free to reblog or w/e! it's been a hot min since i've made content for the fandom (even tho this is just OTP brainrot.....) so i hope someone out there likes it!

random lore drop
Okay, so I know I barely talk/post about my mega man au, (let alone create posts in general (I'm going to start doing that more often though.)) but I feel the need to share this because I think it's kind of funny.
Blues is canonically a gambler in my au. Like, a full-blown gambler.
Hear me out for a second.
I wouldn't say he's like addicted to it or anything, (at least, not yet. I mean what-) but I imagine he likes the actual games themselves. Especially blackjack and poker. He probably likes the thrill of winning and his odds. (The money's just a bonus.)
Oh, did I mention that at the time of the latest chapter that's been posted (Chapter 13), he's 15 years old?
So he's an underage gambler. (buddy's going to jail. (/j)
It's a miracle he hasn't gotten caught, and nobody in his personal circle knows about this yet. But I guess that would make sense because I imagine he's a bit secretive.
Now remember, only 99% of gamblers quit before they win! /s (this is not true at all T_T)
