This March, Argentina’s school year began with empty classrooms. The price of learning materials rose by 502 percent over the past year, leaving many children unprepared for the year to come. And the teachers? On strike after President Javier Milei announced deep cuts to their salaries.

There’s something much larger happening here: Workers rights are under attack in an already vastly unequal society. Labor income inequality has been on the decline in many Latin American countries like Chile, Colombia, and Mexico. In Argentina, it’s been on the rise.

Since the 1960s, Argentina has been in an unprecedented period of macroeconomic instability. Stagnating in the lead-up to, and during, the dictatorship years (1976-1983), the country’s economy has reeled from crisis upon crisis — punctuated with the occasional period of recovery and growth. As the decades wore on, public distrust and discontent produced a deep social divide. Argentines call this phenomenon la grieta (“the rift”).

During his successful presidential bid last year, Milei seized upon these conditions. TV personality and self-proclaimed anarcho-capitalist, the eccentric economist promised to correct Argentina’s path and make what he called the “political caste” pay for their mismanagement of the country. Wielding a chainsaw while he campaigned, Milei vowed to eliminate state ministries, abolish the central bank, roll back abortion rights, and dollarize the economy.

Now that he’s had a chance to implement his platform, working families — not an elite “political caste” — are footing the bill for his far-right economic project.

In the two months before Milei took office in December, inflation was running between 143 and 161 percent. In February, inflation soared to more than 254 percent and the poverty rate reached 57 percent — the highest in decades.

Argentina’s labor movement has quickly mobilized widespread and effective opposition to his policies. While strikes and protests continue, we can already begin to draw lessons on resisting the far-right’s rise worldwide.

Milei takes a chainsaw to workers rights

After taking office on December 10, 2023, Milei acted swiftly. Declaring “There is no alternative to shock,” the president immediately devalued the peso by 50 percent, lifted price controls, and dissolved half of the country’s ministries.

Milei’s government then launched an offensive on workers rights. On December 14, the newly appointed Minister of Security announced a new protest protocol. Consolidating control of Argentina’s security forces and creating a registry for organizations suspected of “instigating” the protocol allowed federal forces to use increased surveillance and violence.

Days later, Milei signed the “Decree of Necessity and Urgency 70/2023.” Dubbed the megadecreto (“mega-decree”) for its sweeping scope — cutting severance pay, weakening collective bargaining rights, deregulating the rental market, and otherwise undermining existing protections — the 366-article document is an unconstitutional abuse of executive powers.

Making matters worse, Milei cut public subsidies on utilities and transportation. Hypocrisy shone through his already vague definition of the “political caste.” As one Argentine told a journalist, “The caste doesn’t take the train nor any form of public transit. We workers and students do.”

Milei’s aggressive measures roused a prompt response from Argentine labor. In late December, the country’s largest unions announced plans for a January 24 general strike — the quickest to be organized under any president since Argentina’s return to democracy in 1983.

Millions join the general strike

Forty-five days after Milei took office, 1.5 million Argentines took to the streets. Workers from all sectors joined the strike: transit, aviation, government, banking, and sanitation, just to name a few.

“Not one step back,” one associated union declared on the day of the strike, “for the unity of the workers movement is essential in protecting the rights we’ve achieved.”

The protesters’ outrage centered on Milei’s Omnibus Bill. The proposed legislation contained sweeping changes to Argentina’s economic and political structure, including the privatization of state-owned companies and an unprecedented expansion of executive powers.

The bill would also codify Milei’s unpopular “mega-decree.”

“[Milei’s ‘mega-decree’] destroys individual rights of workers, collective rights and seeks to eliminate the possibility of union action at a time in which we have great inequality in society” said Héctor Daer, the Secretary General of the General Confederation of Labor. One of the world’s largest unions, the CGT represents roughly two-thirds of Argentina’s unionized workforce.

Shortly after the strike ended, the National Congress of Argentina rejected Milei’s Omnibus Bill. Initially approved by the Chamber of Deputies in a 144 to 109 vote, majority support faltered when it came time for an article-by-article review.

The first Omnibus Bill consisted of 664 articles. Now, two months later, they are struggling to push an amended 269-article version — with hefty concessions for the left.

Milei’s uncompromising approach played no small role in killing his first Omnibus Bill. But the general strike served a critical blow to his already weak coalition.

Aftermath in Argentina, implications abroad

Beyond their victories in the streets, Argentine labor has also made notable gains in the courts. Successfully challenging the legality of Milei’s “mega-decree,” the General Confederation of Labor blocked the roll-out of several critical anti-worker measures.

Following January’s general strike, February and March witnessed a patchwork of smaller strikes, placing continued pressure on the government. The most recent have come in the aviation, healthcare, and education sectors. The Argentine Workers’ Central Union (a federation with 1.2 million members) held a “national day of struggle” on March 12 — and united with other groups to block 500 roads throughout the country on March 18. More strikes are planned for March 28.

On March 14, the Senate voted down the Decree of Necessity and Urgency. Though the “mega-decree” remains in force unless the lower house also opts to reject, the upper house vote represents another massive blow to Milei’s government.

Instrumental in defeating Milei’s first Omnibus Bill — and otherwise slowing the pace of his anti-worker disaster project — Argentine labor’s recent victories offer an important reminder: Working-class people are a potent political force.

These victories also offer lessons in resisting the far-right’s rise worldwide: Organized labor can serve as an infrastructure for mobilization and a counterbalance to democratic backsliding. At their best, unions provide checks on abuses of executive power and ensure that working people always have political representation — no matter who occupies the presidential palace.

With nearly 30 percent of the workforce unionized, the labor movement is strong in Argentina. The United States hasn’t seen that degree of union density since the 1950s, though now the tide might be turning.

With 64 countries holding national elections in 2024, this year will be a watershed moment in world history. And with the far right on the rise, there’s never been a more critical time to mobilize in defense of dignity and democracy.

Here in the United States, there are over 85 million poor or low-income eligible voters. As Inequality.org’s co-editor Sarah Anderson writes, “If this bloc voted at the same rate as higher-income voters, they could sway elections in every state.”

MANILA – The holiday season just got merrier for a lucky bettor from Bulacan who bagged the PHP166-million jackpot prize in Monday night's draw of the Mega Lotto 6/45, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) said on Tuesday.

In an advisory, PCSO general manager Royina Garma said the bettor guessed the winning combination 06-11-24-25-34-39 with a jackpot of exactly PHP 166,546,579.20.

Garma said the ticket was bought at a Lotto outlet in Marilao, Bulacan.

To claim the prize, the bettor must go to PCSO's main office in Mandaluyong City and present two IDs. Also, he/she should bring the winning ticket.

Some 34 bettors who guessed five correct numbers won second prize and will receive PHP32,000 each.

The 6/49 Super Lotto is drawn every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Garma urged the public to keep on patronizing the products of PCSO as a large chunk of its revenue goes to charity programs.

The PCSO serves as the principal government agency for raising and providing funds for health programs, medical assistance and services, and charities of national character. (PNA)

ComiXology - Wikipedia

Iconology Inc.,[1]d/b/a ComiXology (styled comiXology), is a cloud-based digital distribution platform for comics, with over 200 million comic downloads as of September 2013.[2] It offers a selection of more than 100,000[3]comic books, graphic novels, and manga across Android, iOS, Kindle Fire, Windows 8,[4] and the Internet.[5][6] In April 2014, ComiXology became a subsidiary of Amazon.com.[7]

ComiXology's digital platform with Guided View reading technology is used in the company's own branded applications, and is the engine used by most major comic book publishers in the United States, including Marvel Comics and DC Comics for their privately branded digital services.[8] With the release of the third generation iPad and its Retina Display, ComiXology released a high-definition comic format dubbed CMX-HD.[9] The company also provides tools for brick-and-mortar comic book retailers to participate in digital comic sales.[10]

Products

ComiXology.com was launched July 2007 as an online community for comic book fans; the website allows readers to identify upcoming releases and develop pull lists (individual pre-orders) from local brick-and-mortar comic shops. The website displays weekly listings of new titles that can be viewed by issue: displaying cover art, credits, description, price, page count, and other information; the site also includes weekly columns, blogs, news, and podcasts. Users can rate and comment on individual comic books. As of July 24, 2014, ComiXology offers DRM-free downloads (in PDF and CBZ formats) for the comics available from selected publishers on its online store.[11]

Pull List (launched December 2008), a mobile comic book store locater providing readers with a digital Pull List tool, allowing fans to pre-order comics for pick up from local stores through the app. This app has been replaced by the Comics by comiXology app and the web app has the retail store locator included.

Retailer Tools (launched February 2009), a suite of out-of-the-box web solutions for brick-and-mortar comic book retailers to optimize their presence online. Numerous retailers worldwide have integrated comiXology's Retailer Tools into their operations, representing about 2% of all pre-orders in the market.[citation needed]

Comics by ComiXology (launched July 2009), a digital comic book reader and store for mobile devices, including iOS (launched April 2010), Android, Windows 8 (via the Windows Store), and the Internet (web reader launched June 2010), that allows users to access their digital comic collection across multiple devices.

History

The company was founded in 2007 by CEO David Steinberger, CTO John D. Roberts, and Peter Jaffe. Subsequent to winning the business plan competition at New York University, the company received seed financing from Kit McQuiston, New York Angels and Rose Tech Ventures.[12]

In May 2016, the company launched "comiXology Unlimited," a subscription service that gives access thousands of comics to read from most major publishers for a monthly fee of $5.99, however Marvel and DC are not included.[13][14] ComiXology Unlimited, is an online subscription service by ComiXology, a cloud-based platform for digital comics The service offers more than four thousand issues to its subscribers and launched on May 24, 2016.[15] ComiXology Unlimited contains a selection of titles from Image Comics, Dark Horse, IDW Publishing, BOOM! Studios, Dynamite Entertainment, Kodansha Comics, Oni Press, Valiant Entertainment, Archie Comics, Fantagraphics Books, Humanoids, Action Lab Entertainment, Aspen Comics, Magnetic Press, Zenescope Entertainment and more.[14] According to the company, ComiXology Unlimited offers the widest subscription selection of digital comics in the world. ComiXology's patent-pending Guided View technology allows readers to read through comics in full screen or from panel-to-panel, mimicking the natural movement of the eye as though readers were experiencing reading a print comic book.[19]

In June 2018, the company announced ComiXology Originals, an initiative to publish creator-owned titles.[20]

Content relationships

ComiXology currently holds exclusive distribution rights on iOS to DC Comics digital content through branded apps and comics by comiXology.[citation needed]

ComiXology’s first original digital title, Box 13, has been acquired by Red 5 Comics for print distribution. ComiXology also commissioned a sequel to the comic, titled The Pandora Project. Both Box 13 titles were created by the Harvey Award-winning team behind the Zuda Comics title High Moon - David Gallaher and Steve Ellis[23]

Moon Girl is an original comic published by ComiXology, based on a public domain comics character. The creative team on Moon Girl is Tony Trov, Johnny Zito, and Rahzzah.[24]

In 2018, ComiXology, under the ComiXology Originals banner, announced four new projects, namely: Savage Game, Superfreaks, Elephantmen, and Ask For Mercy.[25]

Controversies

In March 2013 during SXSW, an issue arose when Marvel Comics attempted to distribute over 700 comics for free via ComiXology for the Marvel #1 promotion.[26] The ComiXology servers were unable to keep up with user demand, preventing users from obtaining the promotional comics, as well as from reading comics they had purchased. This led to a formal apology and the promotions being delayed.[27] Soon afterward, the promotion was offered again and was reported to have "worked flawlessly".[28] In the aftermath of the ensuing difficulties some users have raised concerns regarding access to their files should the platform ever shut down.[29] To respond to this concern, in July 2014 selected publishers allow for DRM-free downloads of their comics.

On April 9, 2013, writer Brian K. Vaughan issued a statement[30] on Fiona Staples's blog that Apple Inc. had prohibited the sale of Saga #12 through iOS. This statement was quickly reported by the media, the impetus for the "ban" was speculated to be in response to two panels that depicted oral sex between men in a small, inset image violated Apple's restrictions on sexual content. The issue was available through the ComiXology and Image Comics digital comics website stores. The ban was criticized by artists and writers, who pointed to similarly explicit content in previous issues and in other works sold through iTunes. William Gibson and others suggested that the restriction could have occurred specifically because the drawings at issue involved gay sex.[31] A day later, Comixology announced that it had been they, not Apple, who had chosen not to make the issue available, based on their interpretation of Apple's rules, and that after receiving clarification from Apple, the issue would be sold on iOS devices.[32] Brian K. Vaughan then issued a statement apologizing for the miscommunication.[33]

After Amazon's controversial purchase of ComiXology, the company removed the option of purchasing comics inside the iOS app. This change resulted in immediate internet backlash from the comic book reader community, criticizing Amazon's acquisition of the distributor.[34] This change to ComiXology's structure has made readers concerned about the future of digital comic distribution.[35]

Reception

In September 2011, ComiXology's Comics application was the highest-grossing application in the App Store, and together with the branded applications for other comics publishers, accounted for a majority of the five top-grossing iPhone apps.

Having consistently ranked as one of the top-grossing iPad apps in iTunes, ComiXology was called the "iTunes of comics" by The New York Times in May 2012.[36] In 2011, comiXology ranked as number 10 in the top 20 grossing iPad apps for year and also powered two other apps in the top 20 — Marvel and DC.[37] In 2012, comiXology was ranked as the number 3 top grossing iPad app — the only app from 2011 to stay on the top ten list.[38]

Press reception for the launch of ComiXology Unlimited was mostly positive, with journalists and bloggers focusing on the low price point, the 30-day free trial and the diverse collection of independent comics, graphic novels, and manga available at launch.[39] Some critics pointed out, however, that only some trades in the series are available in the program,[40] undermining the “unlimited” aspect of the subscription.

Real estate industry: confidence is high

Premier Sotheby’s International President Budge Huskey is confident in the 2019 residential real estate market.

In some markets in the region, the power has shifted to the buyer — hello, more inventory. But from Naples to Tampa, real estate agents ooze optimism.

While some real estate professionals and brokers along the Gulf Coast welcome a market they say is returning to normalcy in 2019, there is nothing routine about the sale at 2500 Gordon Drive in Naples.

The buyer of that house, a land trust, paid $48.8 million in June for the six-bedroom, nine-bathroom mansion, in Naples’ tony Port Royal neighborhood, according to property records. Even more abnormal: The owners tore down the 24-year-old house in November, choosing to rebuild another mansion on the site, which includes 5 acres of Gulf of Mexico waterfront.

“There were plenty of people who wondered, ‘Why would you need to tear that down, it’s a beautiful home?’” says Premier Sotheby’s International President Budge Huskey, a longtime area real estate executive. Now based in Naples, he’s also run residential real estate brokerages in Sarasota and New Jersey. “But they [the buyers] thought the only way they could get the house they wanted was to build it there. So they basically paid $48.8 million for a vacant lot.”

While the Gordon Drive teardown is an unusual — but not a singular — occurrence, it does illustrate one side of the residential real estate market, say several real estate executives. That side is that for many market pockets, luxury sales remain on the rise — both in volume and sale price. That’s despite a potpourri of obstacles, from inventory increases to stock market volatility to interest rate uncertainty.

“(Last year) was a story of the luxury sector, with the percentage increase in sales of homes above $2 million in Naples and Sarasota far exceeding the pace of the market overall,” says Huskey “The performance of that price category was heavily influenced by new construction and, particularly, closings of newly completed condominium projects.”

A deeper look at three markets in the region — Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater; Sarasota-Bradenton; and Fort Myers-Naples — reveals several other core themes. One, the Gordon Drive project notwithstanding, is the market, after a lengthy run-up is, in some cases, flattening out. And to some, that’s OK.

“People would sometimes rather look at an accident than regular traffic, but we are moving from an abnormally strong market to a more normalized market. That’s been a pronounced shift,” says Michael Saunders & Co. President Drayton Saunders, speaking specifically on the Sarasota-Bradenton-Lakewood Ranch areas. “The market has had a lot of pent-up demand. That has leveled off.”

Sarasota-Bradenton

In the Sarasota-Bradenton region, at least going into 2019, the market took a noticeable dip. Closed sales in the two-county area fell by 14.4% in December 2018 over 2017, according to Realtor Association of Sarasota-Manatee data.

Prices, for most part, also were in drop mode. The median price of a single-family home in Manatee County fell 2.7% from the highest median price in 2017, to $309,000, the association reports. The median price of a single-family home in Sarasota, meanwhile, rose 3.6%. Condo prices were down in both counties: In Sarasota it fell 12%, to $220,000, and in Manatee the median condo sales prices fell 2.6%, to $190,000.

More drops: Single-family home sales in in Manatee County decreased by 1.6% year-over-year, while condo sales fell 17.2%. And Sarasota single-family home sales fell 17.5%, while condos dropped 26.6%, the data shows.

The flip side, inventory, impacting pricing, rose 4.6% in Manatee County and16.9% in Sarasota County. A drop in sales combined with a gain in inventory is normally a recipe for a sour market. But several industry executives caution against overreacting to the most recent data.

“We have started the year with more inventory than last year,” says Saunders, citing places like east Manatee County going through a new homes mini-boom. “But it’s not out of whack with demand.”

Saunders also says the return to normalcy, in many cases, provides lower prices and a “better narrative for the buyer this year over last year.” Amy Worth, president of the Realtor Association of Sarasota-Manatee, in a statement, adds that a “rise in inventory is great for buyers who were previously unable to weigh their options.”

Huskey, who helps oversee Premier Sotheby’s International offices in Florida and North Carolina, says inventory can often be misleading, in there “are really two different inventories in every market.” On one side, he says, are homes in “quality condition and priced appropriately.” On the other side are homes where sellers are living like it’s 2015 and 2016 — when price appreciation was jumping. Like Saunders, Huskey looks at this nugget as a return to normalcy.

“There is a minor revaluation of assets occurring at this time in both the equity markets and in real estate following years of greater than normal growth,” Huskey says. “Accordingly, perhaps the greatest challenge is working with sellers to position properties properly and to adjust expectations on price.”

Like many others in real estate, Huskey, Saunders and Worth are confident in 2019. Worth cites mortgage rates that are down, drawing more people into the market, including first-time buyers. Huskey and Saunders cite the long-term draw of Florida as a great place to live with no personal income taxes — factors that can overcome a government shutdown or stock market upheaval.

And Bryan Guentner, owner of RE/MAX Platinum Realty of Florida in Osprey, in south Sarasota County, says “the halo of continued area population growth,” in the region will provide an ongoing boost for the market against obstacles.

“Sarasota Gulf Coast real estate market conditions are unique, and barring unforeseen economic circumstances, we should see nice real estate sales growth," says Guentner. "We expect this year to be better than 2018 for residential home buyers and sellers.”

NAPLES-FORT MYERS

Through 2018 and into 2019, there has been little sign of a slowdown in residential development growth in Southwest Florida.

From southern Charlotte to eastern Collier counties, entire new towns and new mega-communities address both the growing need for value-priced homes and the continuing appetite for estate properties. Thousands of residences have been approved and are awaiting construction.

Sales are up, as are prices, in Lee and Collier. Lee County saw a 7.9% gain in single-family closed sales in 2018 over 2017 at 13,388, while Collier closed sales increased by 11% at 9,771. Median sales prices in Lee County rose over the prior year by 3.1% at $251,000 and increased by 3% in Lee County at $339,000. Condo sales also gained, up 12% to 5,003 in Collier and 7% to 6,644 in Lee County, according to MLS data.

File. Randy Thibaut, president and CEO of residential land brokerage and services firm Land Solutions, says 2019 will be strong for home construction.

"We are still a very appealing destination nationally," says Ryan Benson, principal of A. Vernon Allen Builder and president of the Collier Building Industry Association. "I believe that’s the natural characteristics we have here (that) will continue to maintain overall demand."

That popularity is reflected in continued strength in new construction. In Collier County, the town of Ave Maria, for example, surpassed 200 home sales for 2018 in November, exceeding the 2,000 rooftop mark overall. Entitled for more than 9,000 homes plus 1.8 million square feet of commercial space, Barron Collier Co. continues to bring the 4,000-acre town to life on the edge of the Everglades, 19 miles east of Interstate 75.

Straddling northern Lee and southern Charlotte counties, the 18,000-acre town of Babcock Ranch surpassed 250 home sales in December, on its way to a planned 19,500 units. And in between those communities, 2018 brought announcements of the development of WildBlue, a 3,000-acre, 1,000-home community; and CenterPlace, with 1,950 residential units both near Florida Gulf Coast University.

And that’s only to name a few.

The number of permits pulled in 2018, says Randy Thibaut, president and CEO of residential land brokerage and services firm Land Solutions, suggest a strong 2019 for home construction.

“We were surprised and happy to see that we saw permits increase in 2018 for single-family and multifamily,” says Thibaut. “We had expected to see some flattening in 2018, which didn’t quite show up, but we expect in 2019 that there will be a little softening in the total permits.”

Thibaut expects 2019 will bring a conflict between the latter stages of a housing boom versus the growing need for value-priced housing. But the outlook remains bright for developers that have either established their models or shifted them toward homes in the $250,000 range.

"Inventory for single-family homes under $500,000 increased the most in 2018, which is good news for buyers who don’t necessarily require a home within walking distance of the beach," says Kathy Zorn, broker-owner of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Pristine in Naples. "In fact, the highest increase in inventory for 2018 was 34%, and it appeared in the under $300,000 single-family homes category."

Thibaut also sees growth in Cape Coral and Lehigh Acres. Builders there have joined Ave Maria and Babcock Ranch in drawing workforce families being forced out of Naples, Estero and Bonita Springs by higher prices. “The big master-planned communities are long-term plays, and the good news for Southwest Florida for 2019 and 2020 is clearly we’re not going to have a bust in the single-family housing market,” says Thibaut. “We are not in an overbuilt situation.”

Construction of luxury high-rise condominiums will also remain strong this year, Thibaut predicts.

“If you build it, they will come,” says Thibaut. “The luxury condo high-rise will continue to thrive simply because there was a decade with no new product built and pent-up demand among an age group looking to move out of single-family and into a luxury condo that offers the view and all the amenities.”

TAMPA-ST. PETERSBURG

Don and Sarah Howe, of Howe Property Group in St. Petersburg have seen zero slowdown in the market. With an average sale price of $1 million, they specialize in luxury condos, town homes and single-family homes in downtown St. Pete, Old Northeast, Tierra Verde and Pinellas County’s beach communities.

“We’re very bullish on the market, by any metric,” says Don Howe. “Inventory is up year over year, as much as 15%. It’s not to the level that it had been, but it’s still on the rise, and values continue to rise.”

Coastal Properties Group International, Howe Property Group’s brokerage group, backs up that statement. The firm totaled $917 million in volume in 2018 on 1,939 transactions.

Howe says downtown St. Pete’s emergence as a walkable cultural oasis has been a big driver of condo sales. He mentions a couple from Chicago who were “exclusively” looking for a waterfront condo on the beach, yet changed their criteria when Howe showed them around the Sunshine City. “Now they’ve completely switched gears,” he says.

And with the new pier opening up later in 2019, Howe predicts downtown St. Pete will remain an easy sell. “They’re coming to St. Pete because of the hip factor,” citing sales to buyers from San Francisco, Singapore and London. “People from far and wide who otherwise would have shopped around in Sarasota or Naples.”

Socioeconomic trends also buoy sales, says Howe. “We’re a warm-weather, low-tax state. There’s just a constant influx of people — white collar, blue collar, whatever.”

The broader Tampa Bay metro area, as well, is healthy when it comes to home sales, says Mark Metheny, president of the central Florida division for Miami-based Lennar, one of the largest builders in the country and region.

Like other builders, Lennar has been active in south Hillsborough County. Metheny says the area has a diverse range of shoppers looking for everything from high-end waterfront homes and active-adult communities to first-purchase residences. The company is busy in the Paso market, too.

“We still appear to be behind the supply-demand curve. The Tampa Bay market is creating more jobs and households than it is building new homes and apartments,” he says. “Tampa Bay is growing and new homes are being occupied by full-time residents, so there is no ‘peak’ like we saw in 2006.”

Howe echoes that view, saying sales to flippers have been minimal. “Lending procedures have gotten very stringent, and appraisals are coming in tight,” he explains. “You’ve got to work really hard to demonstrate value; you’ve got to show comps; you can’t just throw a number out there and get away with it.”
