MAG016, Arachnophobia
Case #0150409, Carlos Vittery Release date: May 2, 2016 First listen: 15th October. On the morning feed route still, was round on the loop way at this stage, with the white head ducks.
I think, once upon a time, I was scared of spiders. At a level I think most folks are, feed by all the child friendly spooky stories and the fact that they as such alien little beings. But I’ve worked the vast majority of my career life outside and when I’m not outside, I’m in sheds or outbuildings or barns or store rooms or stables. Spiders get everywhere and I can’t blame the funky little guys. I’m grateful for the service they provide in pest management and appreciate it when they stay in my line of sight and keep moving all steady and sedate like. But even when they scuttle off at a rate of knots, I’ve gotten over it. But The Web still fucks me up, it’s just that it’s not the spiders. It fucks me up in a very similar way that The Lonely does to be fair.
But this guy, this guy’s got a fear that feels like we’re veering into ‘impacting quality of life’ territory. I don’t really like how a fear of spiders is often played for cheap laughs or is used to make the frightened character seem foolish and weak, Ron Weasley in Harry Potter is one that’s coming to mind and it was even worse in the movies. But to be honest, Ron’s portrayal in the movies was a total character assassination.
But, having been overexposed to creepy crawlies for a long time, and often having to be ‘the brave one’ in a situation involving them, I’ll confess to having a hard time connecting with Mr Vittery’s plight with this aspect of The Web.
- ‘It’s not the sight of a spider that gets me … It’s the presence of a spider.’ I can sort of understand that weird little nuance to a fear. I’ve got one when it comes to taxidermy. I’ve got several pieces of taxidermy, a favourite being a female barn owl that I actually picked up off the road on. Anyway, taxidermy and preserved skeletons, I have no issues with. You start putting multiple specimens in one big case, I’ll get a little twitchy. You put anything from aquatic mega fauna in there and I am averting my eyes and walking the long way around, fuck that noise.
- I have to say, moving from your house to a flat in London to avoid spiders… It’s a lot of effort, so that should give an indication of how serious this guy is. As someone who’s moved house in the recent past, it’s gonna have to be a bloody big spider to convince me I need to move again.
- ‘…spun their filth just a wall away?’ … bit strong mate. Bit strong. Spider webs have been used for wound dressings since the first century C.E. Ever gets mentioned in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as Bottom says when introduced to the fairy Cobweb, ‘If I cut my finger, I shall make bold of you.’ Studies are still being done to examine the extent of the antifungal and antimicrobial properties of spider silk, as well as their viability as vitamin K rich coagulating agents.
- ‘I could not unknow how many were there.’ Well, if The Eye was going to get picky about it, you don’t really know how many were there, you just surmised it was ‘a lot’.
- ‘Renting in London moves very quickly.’ I hear this and I can hear the pain and struggle of every member of Rusty Quill. I also can’t help but think of poor Alex and the saga of the asbestos flat and the amount of stress that piled onto his life. I’m trying to work out the timeline of when that was all happening but short of listening to the start of every episode of Rusty Quill Gaming until I hit the one with the announcement, I’m coming blank.
- Archway, isn’t that where Harriet of MAG006 Squirm lived? And where she was attacked by Jane Prentiss?
- Ah, the introduction of Major Tom. A military man I see, and Jonny persists with his excellent naming convention of cats; ranks, appellations and puns. I’m not personally a cat person, prefer dogs, but I can appreciate.
- ‘This is all a lot of superfluous information-’ No information pertaining to cats is superfluous.
- We get the time frame of Mr Vittery seeing the spider ‘about three months ago’ from the date of the statement, given 9th April 2015. So The Web starts getting bold here at the very start of 2015. If my numbers are correct, and Gertrude was killed around 22nd March 2015, this statement either came in between archivists, or came in very early in the Archivist’s tenure.
- ‘(The) building had acquired something of an infestation (of worms)’ Prentiss! *shakes fist* Actually, if there’d been a few spiders ‘that month’, Prentiss could have been lying in wait for over a year… Harriet was attack around 17th November 2014 and Prentiss lay siege to Martin’s flat from the end of February 2016. What had she been doing in the meantime, besides grossing up the basement of the building Mr Vittery was renting in?
- Also, I this a The Web vs The Corruption smack down or a team up? Their methods overlap a little and the ‘love and looking for love’ aspects of The Corruption could be as compelling to someone’s actions as the machinations of The Web. But I don’t think I could imagine Annabelle Cane baring to be in the presence of Jane Prentiss for it long enough to work, The Flesh Hive just doesn’t have any style.
- ‘...but I would have sworn that this one hated me back.’ Well, to be fair. you have been being very rude about spiders.
- I love the fact that Major Tom ‘didn’t seem hurt or upset’ by the manifestation of The Web. I mean, cats are old gods too in their own right. They’ve been manipulating humanity for millennia in ways The Web can only admire.
- I know green is more the colour palette of the Magnus Institute, but I liked the nod to the Institute’s emblem. Actually, speaking of colour palettes, I remember there was a bit of a joke going around Tumblr about being able to tell which podcast’s fanart you were looking at by the colour of the disembodied eyes present.
Green – The Magnus Archives
Purple – Welcome To Night Vale
White – The Adventure Zone: Balance Arc
- ‘I used to work-’, wait. Has all this made you quit work?
- The presence of the spider feels very ‘Terminator’, to me. Keeps coming back, very persistent.
- ‘...it felt almost involuntary, as though some something were lifting me, hoisting me ... by unseen strings.’ OK, this is the part of The Web that fucks me up. The whole ‘Mother Of Puppets’ schtick, the robbing of autonomy, the manipulation of decisions and choice. I’ve just been casually gaslit too much in my life to not have it make my teeth grind.
- Major Tom peacing on out with only a parting look ‘of pity’. The animals know man. They know.
- ‘Sometimes there would be horses.’ New forest ponies?!
- Ooof that childhood trauma. I think I’m lucky, I don’t have a stand out event that I can point to and say ‘that, that scarred me’. I think mine was a more ‘background radiation’ type of thing that’s led to today’s levels of fucked up.
- ‘Can you be haunted by the ghost of a spider that destroyed your childhood?’ *thinks about a guest for spider and sweats*.
- Is this the first confirmed death of a statement giver we get? We assume Lee Rentoul of MAG014 goes to pieces even if we never his death confirmed and whatever happened to the sister of the statement giver of MAG015, she doesn’t appear to be above ground. Is this the first confirmed death we get?
Supplemental: How could I forget Trevor Herbert of MAG010, our first ‘confirmed’ death, and he ‘passed away’ right there in the Institute building. Why yes, I am put quote marks around all that, why do you ask?
- ‘...his body was completely encased in web.’ I’m sure that happened in the Doctor Who episode Arachnids in the UK, sure it’s fine. If it happened in Sheffield, it can happen in London. Just need to play Stormzy at them.

Sorry if the ending is rushed, I wanted to cut it off before I made it too long. I honestly almost cut it off when they went to their rooms but I wanted to give something of a better end. I could’ve expanded on it a lot more too, but I want to work on the DND AU.

Last name = Swapped queen
—————
None of the queens had ever seen Parr and Seymour fight before.
Those two were extremely close. Parr had a way of calming Seymour down and Seymour was rather protective of Parr.
And Parr was always too shy to argue too intensely (after all, look what happened the last time she did).
They had never once argued. But now here they were.
The original queens had all left, it was a show night and the swapped queens simply wanted to stay home for the night. The originals finally trusted them enough to do so.
(Not as if they didn’t trust the queens themselves, it was more like they didn’t trust them to not kill each other while they were gone. Things still weren’t perfect, but it was a little better than the start.)
So the group had actually been making themselves dinner, gathered in the kitchen.
No one quite knew what led to the argument (Parr and Seymour would later confess that Seymour was about to attempt the knife game), but the next thing they knew, things had escalated.
Parr wasn’t to the point of yelling, not like Seymour was, but she was arguing just as strongly. That alone caught the others off guard.
“You’re going to get yourself killed one day!” Parr insisted.
“I’m too badass to be killed!” Seymour huffed with a laugh.
“... then why were you beheaded?!” Parr asked, voice wavering slightly and hand drifting to her own choker.
Seymour’s expression quickly twisted into a snarl at that. “That doesn’t count! Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to do the game whether you like it or not!”
“Don’t you understand that I care about you?!”
“YOU DON’T CARE, NO ONE EVER HAS!”
Parr finally snapped. “I’M YOUR FRIEND, OF COURSE I CARE!”
Everyone in the room froze. Whether it was from Parr’s voice being the loudest they had ever heard it or from shock of their words, wasn’t clear.
Before anyone could say anything else, Parr scrambled away, hands clasped over her mouth. Seconds later they heard her door closing.
Seymour stared blankly at where she stood for a moment before a scowl appeared on her face and she stomped away, her own door slamming as well.
After their departure, the other four could only stare at each other, for once silent at the scene they had just witnessed.
~~||~~||~~
At some point, another queen spoke to the two. Aragon spoke to Parr and Cleves spoke with Seymour. (Later, Howard would give Parr a small talk and Anne would give Seymour a small talk as well)
Aragon would find Parr sobbing on her bed, curled into a ball. The first queen was quickly gathering Parr up into her arms.
Both were quiet for a long time, simply letting Parr cry.
“Why is she so reckless?” Parr finally whispered.
Aragon sighed. “I don’t know, love. Seymour… I think she does it to vent.”
“I think so too… I just… I care about her.”
“She cares about you too, it’s just… after Henry.”
“All of us feel like that…”
“Exactly.”
~~||~~||~~
Cleves had found Seymour hunched on the floor, about to set fire to a stack of papers with her lighter. Cleves was quick to stop her. Seymour hadn’t resisted as Cleves took her and the paper outside to burn it instead.
Seymour was more snappy than usual, but eventually Cleves got her to open up just slightly.
“Why does she care?”
“I can’t answer that, Seymour. That’s something only Parr can.” Cleves had given her a grin. “But for the record, I care about you too. And frankly, I don’t think either of us need a reason to.”
Both were silent after that.
~~||~~||~~
The original queens still weren’t home yet. The Swapped queens had retired to bed.
Seymour was laying in bed, on her back and staring at the lighter she held up, flicking it and watching the flame dance.
She paused upon hearing the door creak. She glanced over and saw a familiar figure, illuminated by the hall light.
“Parr?” Seymour asked immediately, setting the lighter aside and sitting up. “What—“
In a second, Parr had crossed to her side and had thrown her arms around her. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry I care about you.”
“Don’t…” Seymour paused. “Don’t apologize for caring.”
“Please don’t leave me…” Parr sniffed, arms only wrapping tighter. Seymour stared for a moment before gathering the shorter woman into her arms.
“I won’t leave, I never will. I promise.” Seymour allowed herself to be vulnerable. She couldn’t hurt Parr.
They stayed curled up together the rest of the night. They would talk more in the morning. When Jane stepped into the room, she smiled upon seeing them before quietly grabbing her stuff and heading down to Cathy’s room, leaving the two alone.

Oh My God, We’re Roommates!~Kate x fem reader (Tanner Hall)~College AU-Part 4

Part 2: https://newcaptainofsquad9.tumblr.com/post/185523942072/oh-my-god-were-roommates-kate-x-fem-reader?is_related_post=1
Part 3: https://newcaptainofsquad9.tumblr.com/post/185671804367/oh-my-god-were-roommates-kate-x-fem-reader?is_related_post=1
Pairing: Kate x reader
Summary: After dropping the L bomb on Kate, you flee to your best friends Jane and Robb for advice, while trying to avoid Kate at all costs. You can only avoid her for so long before returning to your shared bedroom, where you nervously try to function without bringing up your feelings or that previous awkward moment.
Word Count: 1, 355
Writer’s Note: Ok, I see how ya’ll reacted to part 3 and one, I’m thankful that all of you folks are invested and, two the reception to this has really gotten me hype to do another fic series. Maybe with *ahem* Natalie aka Envy Adams or even Brie Larson herself (not sure, writing about celebrities is sorta weird, a reason I haven’t done it much--let me know what y’all think, then I’ll decide).
Warinings: None! Just a lot of angst and doubt. The usual with this reader lol.
 _________________________________________________________    ____
The cool breeze managed to calm me down a little as I ride all the way across campus to the suites. I shot Jane a text, but was too fed up to look at it yet. Why would I even say something that stupid? Kate obviously only wanted a morning of fun nothing more and I should have seen that--I should press my breaks before I run into a car again. I was super lucky it happened to be the principal’s car and she was super cool with it. Also I was lucky that I didn’t dent her car that much.
...
Jane answers the door after a few knocks, eyes wide with concern.
“Jesus, did you just ride your bike here in PJs?” she asks.
I nod, duck under her arm and collapse on her bed.
“You think we could trade roommates?” I groan.
Jane gives me a pitiful look and lays next to me.
“I would Y/NN, but I think I’d end up giving Kate a piece of my mind. Did you bring up your feelings before?” Jane asks.
“No,” I say into her fluffy stuffed lion, “she flirted with me a lot and kissed me back even also--”
Jane pulls me away from her stuffed friend, a mega watt grin.
“How far did you guys get?” she wriggles her eyebrows, clearly forgetting the state I’m in right now.
“We didn’t get that far, but that’s--that’s not the point!” I mumble, “just, make me forget about her.”
Jane giggles.
“Look, Y/N I might be into girls and guys too but you’re my best friend--”
I cut off her stupid joke with a death glare immediately.
“Ok! Ok! In all seriousness, you need to get out of your stump! How about we meet Robb at Wackner’s dinning hall, all you can eat pancakes,” Jane suggests.
I cringe at her words.
“Why pancakes? That’s what Kate ate yesterday,” I groan.
Jane sighs, grabs my wrist firmly and pulls me up into a sitting position with her.
“All right! Enough about Kate, Y/N. Let’s get you some food and potentially a new person to think about,” Jane says as she hooks her arm around my own, forcing me up from the bed.
“Can I get waffles instead of pancakes?” I hopelessly ask.
Jane nods sharply.
“Bet your ass you can,” Jane vows.
...
The line to get hot and ready breakfast food reached to the middle of the hall. Everyone who got their food already is either sitting at one of the long tables, or excusing themselves by someone who’s in line. Jane and I stand there for fifteen minutes until we get our meal and start toward the row of tables on the right side of the dinning hall.
“Y/N, Jane! Over here!”
I jerk my head over to Robb, screaming over the room as always. I didn’t miss it during the break, but now it’s endearing. I used to have a crush on Robb and his black, slick back hair. I decided to back off once he and Jane were a thing during freshmen year, but they mutually decided to stay friends. It meant I didn’t have to be a third wheel anymore and not be a shoulder to cry on for Jane if they had problems. Of course Robb had his friend group as well, but we’d talk about comics and video games for hours in the cafe.
“How was your trip back?” Robb asks while taking one of Jane’s tator tots.
“It was all right,” I say, while trying not to mention Kate, “managed to get my parents not to cry when they left.”
Robb chuckles and nudges Jane.
“Is that really all?” he asks lowly.
“Nope,” Jane replies.
“Hey!” I protest, “I can hear you!”
Jane blinks and sets her plate on the table before sitting. Robb and I follow suit.
“Aw, c’mon what’s up?” Robb asks, “let me guess, it’s girl trouble?”
I put my face in my hands as Jane nods slowly.
“That’s about right. Y/N does have trouble, with a certain girl--she likes,” Jane explains.
Robb turns to me with a mildly shocked expression.
“Oh, well who is she?” he asks.
“My roommate,” I groan.
Robb grins.
“Well, most of the work is done for you, depends if you make the first move or not--ow!” Robb yelps, Jane stomping on his foot.
“Not the issue, Robb!” she scolds, “Y/N just needs to lighten up and it’s our job to help her, right?”
Robb reaches down to rub his foot, but not before stealing a quick glance at me.
“Right,” he agrees, “if you’d like we could all go to this small get-together with a buddy of mine.”
“Really? What’s his major?” Jane asks.
I get lost in my own plate of food until a guy comes up to Robb.
“Robb, hey man!”
I nearly choke on my bacon as Dave and Robb do a quick embrace and a handshake.
“Dave, hey. Sorry I couldn’t make it to the party last night, how was it?”
I drop my bacon and place my hand over my forehead. God, I can’t be here. Not in front of him.
“Jane, Robb--I’ll catch you guys later,” I let out.
“Y/N,” Jane starts but I’m already up and moving toward the exit.
...
It’s a school night, which means tomorrow morning I’ll have class to distract myself from Kate. It also gives me an excuse not to be in our room most of the time. I traded this mornings pajamas with a simple tank top and sweats and take my place on my bed with a book. My mind needs to be refreshed before classes start back up. Kate steps through the door an hour later, forcing my heart to leap up my throat.
“Y/N,” she says with a sigh, “are you all right?”
I nod, close my book and rise from my bed.
“Fine,” I mumble while slipping on my shoes.
I can’t be here, not right now.
“Where are you going?” she asks.
“To Starbucks, I need a latte to finish this book,” I say.
Kate steps over to me and places a hand on my wrist.
“Y/N, wait--let me come with you,” she says.
“No, Kate, I can go alone,” I retort.
“Y/N,” she says more firmly, “look at me.”
I keep my eyes down at my feet as Kate tries again.
“Please, Y/N,” she whispers, “say something.”
“I-I made a complete fool of myself, didn’t I?” I ask.
Kate raises an eyebrow.
“Why would you--”
“I didn’t mean too--I didn’t mean to say what I said, I know you’re into Dave and,” I cut myself off as a sob escaped my lips.
“What, Dave? I’m not into him anymore,” Kate says.
“You aren’t into me either,” I let out, “God I’m so stupid.”
Kate frowns and puts a hand on my cheek.
“You aren’t stupid Y/N, but what you’re saying isn’t very bright,” Kate states.
“Wha--”
Kate pulls me against her, wiping the tears and stray hair from my face before giving me a passionate kiss. I melt into her, returning the kiss. My hands find her chest and she smiles. This isn’t right. It feels so right, but I need answers. I push Kate away.
“Do you like me?” I flat out ask.
Kate nods.
“I may not love you as much as you love me, but Y/N I care about you,” Kate admits, “I want you.”
I try to hide my blush at her words. Think with your head, not your lady parts Y/N.
“We’re going to take this slow then,” I say, “no more bed stuff at least until we’ve dated and gotten to know each other a little.”
Kate groans but finally nods.
“Fine, but can we do this?”
I lean my head up at her question and her lips are on mine again. My arms find themselves around her neck while she holds me close by the waist. Her hand moves lower, but I catch it quickly. I can keep this at a make-out. Not too heated as long as I keep my head straight.

Dimensions
BEN Drowned x researcher reader
Your POV
I have been doing dimensional research for the past 5 years along with my Pokémon. They help me when needed.
My research has been going into opening a rift to another world where Pokémon can also exist.
Today I perfected the portal and am ready to test it.
I have no idea what I will find there or if it will be dangerous so I am bringing my team.
Grabbing my belt, I check if all my pokeballs are there. Counting them, I see all six.
Pulling on my lab coat, I press the button and open the portal.
"Goodbye Pokémon world, until I return again." I announce, tears in my eyes.
Slinging my backpack over my shoulder, I step into the portal.
Suddenly, the scenery changes and I am dropped into what appears to be the woods before the the portal closes and disappears, waiting to be activated again with my remote.
Standing up, I explore around, coming across a big Victorian style mansion.
Creaking the door open, I expect to see mold but instead see lavish furniture.
Hearing sounds, I head into a room to see a bunch of terrifying creatures gathered around a tv playing some sort of game.
Gasping at their appearances, they all turn towards me, before charging at me with weapons.
I speed out the door and into the lawn before they catch up.
Reaching to my belt, I snatch a pokeball off it, hoping my Pokémon can help me.
Throwing the ball into the air, blue light flashes before my Drampa drops onto the ground with a thud.
The creature all look stunned before charging.
"Drampa! Use protect!" I screech, eyes closed and waiting to be stabbed.
Drampa's eyes narrow and he protects me in a blue shield where the creatures hit it.
Suddenly, a floating torso speaks up.
"That's a pokemon! Drampa is a pokemom! How does this lady have a Pokémon in the real world?!" He says.
"If you promise not to attack me I can explain." I timidly say.
They put their weapons away and nod.
Drampa lets the shield go away but stays near me.
"I am Professor Y/N L/N from Lilycove City. I am a dimensional researcher and I found a way to open a rift into your world. I took my Pokémon with me for protection and here we are." I explain.
They all take in the information, looking stunned.
A giant slender man steps up wearing a suit and tie.
"Miss, could you show us these "Pokémon" you speak of?" He questions.
I nod and release the rest of my team.
Out comes my Flygon, Stoutland, Beartic, Roselia, and Gengar.
They all stare in awe as my Pokémon gather around me protectively.
I am then introduced to them.
"May I pet them, miss?" a little girl in a bloody pink dress holding a teddy bear asks.
"Sure, but be careful to not provoke them, they will attack and you will get hurt." I cautiously say.
Sally immediately goes towards Stoutland and gets onto his back.
The girl in black, I believe her name
Is Jane, went towards Roselia, as did most of the girls.
This boy with a cut in smile, Jeff, ran towards Beartic, calling him cool.
The rest of them went towards the one that caught their eyes.
I noticed that this boy about my age wearing a green tunic of some sort went towards me however.
"Hi there. Wouldn't you like to see my Pokémon?" I ask confused.
He shakes his head and smiles.
"I'm BEN Drowned. I just wanted to get to know you a little better." He says.
This is what started our conversation.
We talked on and on about our lives, our dreams, and family.
BEN told me that the creepypastas, their name, are like a family of killers.
"Aren't you scared because we kill innocents?" He asked
"Not really. I don't really have any human friends, just Pokémon. So I don't really care about them." I say harshly.
He nods and we continue talking.
Hearing my Pokémon crying, I look over.
All my Pokémon race towards me and return to their balls.
"What happened? Why did they leave?" Sally asked.
"They are just tired right now." I say.
Just then, I realized something. I don't have a Pokémon center to heal my Pokémon or any potions.
"Uhh guys I have a problem. There aren't any Pokémon centers here for me to heal my friends." I say, rubbing my wrists.
"Red and I can heal them." Lost Silver offers.
"Thank you so much!" I cry out.
"Do you guys want to see something cool?" I ask, hyped up.
"Yes!" They all scream.
I release my Pokémon again.
"We are going to put on a show. Get ready!" I announce, my Pokémon cheering with me.
"Alright lets start this off with Roselia! Use magical leaf and petal dance together!" I say.
Roselia lifts her roses and releases leaves and pink petals into the air, the creepypastas watching intently.
"Beartic! Use icy wind and freeze them all! Flygon! After he freezes them use dragon claw on them!" I command.
Beartic opens his mouth and a gust of cold wind freezes the petals and leaves, only for them to be shattered when Flygon hits them with his claws.
The creepypastas all cheer in excitement and wonder.
"Gengar use shadow ball and launch it into the air! Beartic I want you to freeze it with ice beam. Then Gengar hit it with dark pulse!" I scream.
They follow my command, causing glimmers to go everywhere.
"This is the final thing. The ultimate bond between trainer and Pokémon." I announce.
Grabbing my earrings with the mega stones, Gengar grabs his wrist.
"Gengar! Let our love and trust turn this form into another. Mega evolve!" I cry.
Gengar screams before being engulfed in white light.
When the light fades, Gengar is in his mega form.
The creepypastas all gasp in shock.
"This is mega evolution. If the trainer has a key stone and the Pokémon has its mega stone, the bond between Pokémon and trainer makes the Pokémon mega evolve. The bond must be strong enough, or the Pokémon loses control and becomes violent. Gengar never had this problem, as our bond is amazing, but a friend of mine did. Her name is Korrina and her Lucario kept disobeying her orders and attacking relentlessly. Eventually though, the worked it out and Lucario can successfully mega evolve now." I tell them.
"Alright! All of you! Could you please return?" I ask my Pokémon.
They nod and retreat into their balls with a stream of red light.
Turning towards the creepypastas, I nod and begin to turn.
"I must be going now, I have to look for a place to stay. I want to conduct research here before returning to my world." I explain.
"You can stay with me Y/N!" BEN screeches frantically, desperate to keep me with him.
I turn back around and race towards him, crushing him in a hug.
"Come on, lets go inside." He coos before he lifts me up in his arms and begins to carry me into the mansion. Well, floating.
He set me down in his room and closed the door.
He holds up a controller.
"Wanna play?" He asks.
I nod and take the controller.
Huge timeskip
It has been 6 years since that day I came to this world. BEN asked me to be his girlfriend before asking me to marry him 2 years later. I said yes, obviously.
I occasionally go back to see my friends and family, but otherwise live here with my husband. I have never been so happy I made a decision as the day I decided to step through the portal into the unknown.
I am Y/N L/N, the dimensional researcher, who couldn't ask for a better life.

Survey #235
“the monster you made is wearing the crown; i’ll be the king and you be the clown.”
What is your favorite move franchise? The Lion King. What was the last fast food you ate? I had a hot dog from Sonic and one of those pretzel twists things. What is the saddest book you’ve ever read? Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo. Do you prefer heroes or villains? Villains. Duh. They're like, always more interesting. What is something you think is overrated? Uhhh coffee, for one. But like what you like. What political cause are you most passionate about? Gay rights. What country would you most like to visit? South Africa. Have you ever considered having children? Literally the only period where I wanted kids was later into Jason's and my relationship. Hell, I wanted three while he was always like "onLY TWO." Now, I don't want a single one, ever. I would be an awful mother for many reasons. If you ever took field trips as a child, which was your favorite? The zoo with Dad, my then-best friend, and her mom. One and only time I've seen meerkats. I was so excited I almost cried. Do you have any weird family traditions? It's not like, a tradition, I think, but we have a unique thing where saying "I love you mostest period" is something Mom, Dad, and my sisters have used for all my life. It's a way of saying "I love you more than you could ever love me, no arguments." Now Sara's been dragged into it lmao. Have you ever considered acting? Nope. Who was the last person you slept next to? Sara. Do you think you can be in love and still cheat on your S.O.? You can't "be in love" with a person and fucking cheat on them, no. Do you subscribe to any streaming services? We have Netflix. Idk about anything else. Have you ever been in a physical fight? No. What is the most embarrassing thing anyone has on video of you? I don't even wanna know. Did you ever get lost as a child? Yep, in a Wal-Mart lmao. This old lady helped me find my fam. What is your favorite condiment? Honey mustard. Or ketchup. Depends. Have you ever had an existential crisis? Very surprisingly, not really. Do you like country music? Begone, demon. It's still so weird to me that I loved it as a kid, but I really just grew up with it. What color are the eyes of the person you love? Brown. What is your favorite kind of flower? I looooove orchids. What town were you born in? Not the best thing to share on the Internet, eh? Do you know how to play any card games? I only vaguely understood/understand Magic: The Gathering. It's honestly really fun, but very complex in rules. It was Jason's thing so he got me into it. I miss my PS3 working because I used to have the "Duels of the Planeswalkers" on there, and doing it digitally is much easier and helpful. I loved it mostly because the art is fucking incredible. It was an old little aspiration to wind up designing the art some day and I don't think I ever saw Jason more excited. What is something about your childhood that you miss? Being more into video games than I am now alskdjf;awe. I'm more of a viewer of let's plays now than an active gamer; meanwhile, as a kid, video games were my favorite things in the world. Did you ever have MySpace? Do you miss those days? Yeah, I had one. Honestly though I can barely remember it (other than the song on my page was "Pocketful of Sunshime" lmaooooo as well meerkat-flooded), so it doesn't matter. What is the best television show you’ve ever watched? Meerkat Manor is my favorite show of all time, but as a proper show could have been better. AP made up their own shit and deviated from the KMP facts A LOT (guess what: Mozart killed a competitor's litter before; not exactly MM's her, right?), and not only was that confusing, but just annoying. Give me the real shit; don't just tweak stuff for dramatic effect. I could list a novel of lies in the series. Now, what I feel is the best show without a meerkat bias and just has an overall good plot. I kinda wanna say Supernatural, but the boys dying five million times got old. Possibly Fullmetal Alchemist. Are there any songs you can’t listen to because they bring back memories? I 110% refuse to hear "Stairway to Heaven." Have you ever saved someone’s life? Funny this is brought up after recent events. My sweetheart online bud had a cerebral aneurysm while having an extremely difficult time talking to me, and no one was home quite yet. Her final message was concerning and she didn't reply to me for a while, so I wound up messaging her again after a bit, and her boyfriend heard the b.net notification sound. Saw it was me and asked what was up. Told him, and he figured out she wasn't sleeping on the couch, she was passed out. He told me he never would have known if I hadn't said something. So does that count, even though I didn't like, physically save her? Have you ever broken any major bones? No. Are there any websites you’ve used for over 10 years? Good question? Idk. WAIT HOLD THE FUCK UP, KM's 10th birthday is coming up real soon. Wow. I know YouTube has been much longer. Idr when I joined deviantART. Maybe there's more, I dunno. Do you have any siblings? If so, what are their ages? My two immediate are 22 (ew) and 26 (double ew). Anything exciting taking place today? No, today was A N X I E T Y !! ! ! !! !! What are you craving? Okay so I have been MEGA in "the mood" lately and it's frustrating especially because I don't masturbate so I have like nO OUTLET. Who did you last hit? Nobody saving for when I was a kid repeatedly slapped my sister's arm for doing something I don't remember. How do you do in school? It depends on the subject, but in anything, I am a MASSIVE procrastinator, and I need to fix that. Schoolwork, good good, homework in the library, good good, but when I'm at home, I cannot seem to convince myself to work. As Sara puts it, home is like my "safe" place, and I don't want to bring school into it. Adjusting to school life again after like... two whole years or so of doing NOTHING at all, almost every day all day, is very difficult. I'm SO glad I picked school again, it's just a lot for a person who was so isolated and void of responsibilities to get used to. What’s your biggest goal? Right now, continue to improve my mental health. Fight social anxiety and AvPD. Who have you texted today? Just Sara. Who do you aspire to be like when you grow up? In most ways, especially in kindness, wisdom, relentless determination, passion, creativity, etc. etc. etc. etc., Mark. I think it's obvious he's Role-Model #1. I would loooove to be like Jane Goddall and Steve Irwin, too, feeling with such ferocious potency for animals and how they should be respected and loved. UM AND ALSO, EUGENIA COONEY IS THE SWEETEST PERSON ON THE ENTIRE GODDAMN EARTH AND I WOULD LOVE TO BE AS FRIENDLY AND PRECIOUS AS SHE IS. Oh, and then there's Shane Dawson. I relate to him SO much. He is the most selfless angel that seems SO down-to-earth and relatable as hell. I feel like he could be like, my best friend. Ahhhhhhh there are so many more, I love talking about my inspirations, but I'll chill here. Do you know if you want to go to college or not? I'm in college right now, and I desperately want it to stay that way. I'm fucking going somewhere in my life, and the education it provides will bring me closer to that. College is far from mandatory for everyone, but I feel it is beneficial for me. Do you like grapefruits? I haven't had one in a LONG time, so I don't really remember how they taste. I just know sour. What do you think of guys who wear eyeliner? *drools in Darkiplier* the fuck do you think Do you like online games? Only World of Warcraft, really. Who’s one person you care about more than yourself? Okay, real talk, and I hope this is everybody's answer. No one. I'm putting my goddamn self and my mental peace first for the rest of my life. Are there any pets you’re wishing for? I want another ball python. When’s the last time you used hand sanitizer? Two days ago when Mom and I stopped somewhere to eat. Wearing anything that isn’t yours? No. What type of bread did you use on the last sandwich you made? White. How many doors are in your house? Uhhh six. What was the last compliment you received, that made you smile? Sara said she was really proud of me, and to me, that's one of the biggest compliments you CAN give me. Think you need to lose weight? How much? ugh When was the last time you watched a VHS movie? I don't have a clue. We kept our VHS longer than most, though. We had too many movies on it. What event would you go back in time to see, if you could? Ummmm I dunno. Do you remember the last thing you said you wanted? To hug Sara. Who was the last friend you hung out with&what’d you do together? Sara stayed for a week. We did a lot. Who is the person, other than a spouse, that you are closest to? Sara. If you watched it, who was your favorite Hey Arnold! character? Oh my god, I hated that stupid show, but one of my sisters liked it. Have any good school pictures? or do they all just suck? There is literally ONE picture from elementary school where I think I looked pretty. Do you like trying on clothes or not? & Why? NO. I try to avoid it if I can. It's just annoying to change clothes for like five seconds. What are your thoughts on marriage? It's sweet, but I've come to find it... kinda needless for the most part? Like I know it has financial pluses and the symbolism is beautiful, but it's just that: symbolism originating from fantasies (imo, don't scream at me). It only adds pressure to stay in a dying relationship and makes splitting much more complicated. BUT, even with all that said, I personally want to get married someday, but only if I am *sure* about this person. It's the symbolism I like. That and it's so ingrained into my head that that's the "end goal" of relationships, so I'm pretty much just conditioned to want it. How long have you lived in the current place you’re living? Two years. Do you plan on moving anytime soon, if so where? I want to, but I am not in the financial position or at a level of independence where I'm ready for that. Are you more of a follower, or a leader? Be honest. This may alter with the situation, but mostly, I'm definitely a follower. Are your dreams/nightmares in black&white or color? I've heard of this condition before and it really intrigues me. I dream in color. Have you ever wanted to be some sort of hero outside of video games? I mean, define "hero." Like an action superhero in a literal way, nooooo. I'd die on Day #1, lmao. As a hero/inspiration as a person, of course; who doesn't? Will you admit that you’re at least somewhat superficial? I mean, probably in some places? How often do you go to the mall closest to you? Almost never ever. Our mall sucks and has experienced too many shootings. Do you still count with your fingers, even if only every so often? Yep. Like, always. Have you ever gone on a road trip with just friends? No. Well, I went to the beach with my friend and her mom, but just for a day or two because my separation anxiety from Mom got too bad oof. Without trying, do you act differently around different friends? Depends on the friend. I don't "fake it," just how reserved I am can move around. What was the last thing you drew/wrote on your own or someone else's skin? Probably a butterfly on my wrists when I was actively part of the Butterfly Project community. The last time you spent money, what was it on & how much did you spend? $1.25 for a drink at school. What’s the most money you’ve ever spent on one piece of clothing? Idk, but definitely not a lot. In elementary school, were you more of the bully or the bullied? Thankfully, neither. Do you like when a spouse is clingy, or can you not stand that? I'm sure to a certain degree it would be annoying, but for the most part, hell, I think it's attractive. Especially since I NEED validation you like me. How much do you say you walk in a week outside of school &/or work? Just around my house if you exclude school. Is there anything you wish your parents did differently in raising you? I wish they'd given us chores. Wish Mom didn't spank us. What would you do if the last person you texted asked you out? Lol yo we JUST broke up like an hour ago. We're not ready to get back together yet, obviously. Don't worry a bit, we're both cool. Still best friends, even. To compress a long story, needed personal growth and distance have brought us to returning to just friends. For now, at least. Have you ever received a scholarship? I think so... but not like a huge one, I believe. Who was the last person who got frustrated with you? Most likely Mom. When was the last time you mopped your kitchen floor? I myself have never mopped it. Or maybe once. What is your favorite work of art? I mentioned the Denialism painting in my last survey. What was the last appointment or plan you had to cancel? Plan, my next one with my psychiatrist. What spur-of-the-moment decision that you’ve made has had the biggest impact on your life? I don't know if any have truly changed my life. The ones that did (that I remember) were pondered over. Do you know anyone who is (or has been) a refugee? I don't think so, What is your best friend’s worst habit? She doesn't have faith in herself for ANYTHING lj;ljalwie Do you like spinach and artichoke dip? alksd;fjwei no Have you ever felt like you were about to pass out, but didn’t? Yep, a couple times. What was the name of one of your childhood imaginary friends? I didn't have any. What’s your favorite phase of the moon? Full. Do you wish you were richer? I physically refuse to be anything less than stable, hopefully even above that, once I'm independent. We've been poor all my life and it is fuck-ing HARD. It's stressful as a motherfucker and I am done with it. Very. What’s a middle name you like? Quinn. Fits a lot. I planned on giving that middle name to my hypothetical daughter. Are you scared of spiders? y e a h Do you weigh the same as your mom? No. Were you a Mary-Kate and Ashley fan? Like the average 90s/early 2000s kid. Coffee mugs, teacups, or water bottles? Uh, aesthetically? Teacups, probably. Bubblegum or cotton candy? Gum. I like the taste and texture of cotton candy, it is just RIDICULOUSLY sweet. It bothers my sensitive teeth sometimes. Do you prefer to drink soda from cans, bottles or cups? Cans. They get the coldest. Game you were best at in P.E./gym? Idk, I didn't excel at any. What do you have for breakfast on an average day? I'll typically just have a meal replacement shake or a Pop-Tart. Favorite non-chocolate candy? Sour Punch Straws (gotta be red). Favorite book you had to read for school? The Outsiders. Most frequently worn pair of shoes? My flip-flops, 'cuz they're easy to just slip on. Ideal weather? Cool but not windy (a light breeze is fine) with a partly-cloudy sky. Obsession from childhood? Webkinz. Favorite crystal? Dragon's breath opal. Favorite activity to do in warm weather? Swim or stay the fuck inside. Favorite activity to do in cold weather? Taking pictures in the snow. Five songs to describe you? "Get Up" by Mother Mother, "That's What You Get" by Paramore, uhhh... I don't feel like thinking over this any longer. My iPod isn't near me to scan through what I have, so yeah. Best way for someone to bond with you? Let's have deep philosophical talks about like the meaning of life 'n shit. Top 5 favorite Vines? Oh my god, this is impossible. To name some that come to mind first, in no order: "It's Wednesday, m'dudes *insert mating call*", "I cOUld'vE dROPPED My croiSSANt," "this is why mom doesn't FUCKING LOVE YOU," that one at a club where a girl is doing smoke tricks and the dude just goes "check that out" (or "wow," idr) or something similar (I couldn't find it), and omfg I adore that Snoop Dogg one with the little boy just semi-dancing to that iconic song???? I LOVE IT??????? Man, there are so so many more. Very honorable mention: "a d a m". Ads you have stuck in your head? None, thankfully. What is the first meme you remember seeing? Uhhh maybe Happy Bunny? Idk. Sci-fi, fantasy, or superheroes? Fantasy. Favorite type of cheese? American. What saying or quote do you live by? There's a lot I've picked up on and cling to. #1 is perhaps "Deal with life, or life deals with you." What are you currently stressed about? Some... things I realized about myself that disgust me. Favorite fairy tale? Shrek is a goddamn fairy tale and I will fight to the death against anyone who claims otherwise. Favorite tradition? I don't really have one anymore, but I remember as a kid, I would NEVER let Mom forget to throw some "reindeer food" outside for them lol. Talent you’re proud of having? One that warrants pride, exactly? Not just random talents? Well, uhhh. I suppose writing. I mean it modestly, I really do, but as a kid, my teachers all the way through high school always thought I was cheating or a parent did my papers at home. Some were only convinced by me writing in the classroom. I don't feel as good about my writing as I did in high school, but I am sill proud of excelling in it and taking writing anywhere seriously. If you were a video game character, what would your catchphrase be? I mean, name the game and genre here. Probably like "what the fuck" at like, everything, because I already do that. If you were an anime character, what genre of anime would it be? Like, based on my current life? I dunno. A sad and repetitive one with some bright days to it. Ohhh, and the color scheme and lighting vary with my mental state. Yo that would be dope. Character you relate to? lmao THRALL from WoW for being like "can y'all bastards just chill tf out" until he goes off to an isolated land away from civilization bc he's seen enough shit. Also compelled to help. Any good luck charms? I don't believe in those. Least favorite flavor of food or drink? As far as consistent flavors go, normally cherry or grape. Left or right handed? I'm a righty. Favorite potato food? Fries, when I wish they weren't. Earth tones or jewel tones? Jewel. How many phone numbers do you have memorized? Literally just Mom's. Not even mine.

My top-10 games of 2018
Tumblr media
It’s that time of the year where you are flooded with lists of the best stuff from 2018 and I’m no different. Originally I was going to just make a list of the top 10 games I played in 2018. I even had a giant list I was updating throughout the year. But one day my phone randomly reset and I lost that list. So, business as usual this year. Maybe next year.
Before I start with the numbered list, I’d like to note a couple of games that won’t be appearing for various reasons.
Games I liked a lot but haven’t played enough of to place on a list like this: Into the Breach, Dead Cells
A critically acclaimed game I haven’t played: God of War
I don’t want remakes on my list, but these games were really good: Shadow of the Colossus, Yakuza Kiwami 2 and Spyro Reignited Trilogy
Ports aren’t eligible but I like these a lot too: Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Shenmue 1&2, Hyrule Warriors and the PC port of one of the best games ever, Yakuza 0.
Okay, let’s get started.
10-) Red Dead Redemption 2: Actually had to debate between this and Pokemon: Let’s Go Pikachu for this spot. Ultimately I chose this game because the narrative is spectacular. Well that and the fact that Let’s Go is sort of a remake. This game absolutely nails atmospheric storytelling and creates one of the most interesting protagonists in AAA gaming. This game does a lot of things well, but the actual gameplay portion is...pretty mixed. I didn’t have fun with the open world at all and most missions involved long bouts of horseback riding with dialogue or ambient music. But RDR 2 does everything else so well. It also knows when to go all out. Every major mission in the game is memorable for one reason or another, especially with intelligent usage of music. It’s a game I will never play again, but despite some problems with the gameplay I can safely say that I enjoyed my time with it.
9-) Mario Tennis Aces: This game was a lot of fun. I wrote about it earlier in the year and my opinions on it are still the same.  Even though the gameplay is fairly simplistic, every match against another human felt unique and different. You have to learn the styles of your opposition and adapt. It’s like a fighting game! The online gameplay was also pretty solid. I felt pretty damn good whenever I would win a tournament. Really, Smash Bros. Ultimate would have done well to borrow this mechanic in some way. The only real problem with the game is that there is just a major lack of content. The heavily advertised story mode is barely worth playing and the cups, well, you might as well be playing against an unmanned player 2. I haven’t touched the game in a while, so this might have been fixed via update. As I said a few months ago, this game could have been a masterpiece with a bit of extra fine tuning.
Tumblr media
8-) Dragon Ball Fighter Z: This game feels like it was made specifically for me. I have a lot of love for the Marvel vs. Capcom games and even more love for the Dragon Ball franchise. The game is easy to approach for newcomers to this type of game by keeping the inputs simple and having very easy to pull of auto-combos. You won’t do too well online if you stick to the auto combos, but it’s a good way to start and learn how to play. I think a lot of people could start with Fighter Z and transition into more complicated fighting games, which is exactly what you want with a game like this that will attract many people who might not otherwise play a traditional fighter. Oh, and sometimes it looks like you’re playing an episode of the anime which is insane. The story mode is pretty tedious at times, which is a let down, but Fighter Z is an absolute blast to play and is easily the best playing Dragon Ball game yet. Hopefully season 2 of the DLC goes less heavy on all the Gokus.
7-) Mega Man 11: The blue bomber returns! It’s been a long wait, but after playing through both collections last year and then the X-collection earlier this year, I was ready for Mega Man to get back into the spotlight. It’s a little hard to get into at first because the level design seems pretty tied into the main new mechanic, the gear system. Basically the player can slow things down to a crawl or boost Mega Man’s power. If you just play this game like you would any other Mega Man game, you’re probably going to throw your console out the window during Tiki Man’s stage. Once you figure this out, the system adds a unique flavor to the Mega Man experience and feels like an actual new Mega Man. I love MM9 and 10, but those did not feel like new games. The only thing that I didn’t like about this game was the music. Which, uh, is weird for a Mega Man game. Here’s hoping they get it right in the inevitable Mega Man X9.
6-) Marvel’s Spider-Man: I don’t particularly like super hero movies and I haven’t enjoyed a Spider-Man game thoroughly since the first PS1 Spider-Man, so you wouldn’t normally think this game would appeal to me. But it absolutely does. The gameplay is outstanding and combines an improved version of the swinging scene in Spider-Man 2 with a combat system that is fairly similar to the Batman Arkham games. I recommend playing the game on hard because, while it’s hard to get used to, it makes every encounter feel unique. You constantly have to adapt to what the enemy is doing. You can’t just mash on the attack button and then press the dodge button when the dodge prompt comes up.
The story is also interesting throughout. It has my favorite interpretation of Peter Parker I’ve seen in a while and has a pretty enjoyable cast of characters. Really Mary Jane is the only character I didn’t like and even with her, there are moments that hit home - specifically the text exchanges between MJ and Peter. The game is littered with references to past Spidey adventures and just feels like a giant love letter to fans of the hero. Can’t recommend it enough.
Tumblr media
5-) Celeste: I didn’t know what to expect with this game. Sometimes I feel very leery of when a bunch of people prop up an indy game too much. Gone Home a couple of years ago told a pretty mediocre story that was held up as some form of high art. Just didn’t get it. So I went into Celeste wanting to not like it and came out fairly surprised. The gameplay feels like a better version of Super Meat Boy and the narrative tells a pretty compelling tale about depression and how to come to terms with yourself. I even don’t mind the pixel art. I am getting sick of indy games going for the retro aesthetic, but when combined with the great soundtrack it’s hard not to love what it’s presenting.
The game is simple enough to complete on its own. I would argue that anybody could do it as long as they keep at it. But for those platforming veterans, the game also offers a heavy challenge. The B-side and C-side levels will test your skills and remind you of some of the most challenging bits of hard platforming games like Super Meat Boy and I Wanna Be The Guy. Basically, come for the compelling narrative. Stay for the wickedly difficult and addicting gameplay.
4-) Yakuza 6: I believe I enjoyed this game far more than most folks. It told the end of Kazuma Kiryu’s story. It had some problems along the way but my god did I enjoy the ride. The cast of characters surrounding Kiryu in Hiroshima are all great and one of the main characters is Beat Takeshi. It also has a ton of things to do and see. I love the clan wars sidequest featuring New Japan wrestlers, I love the baseball manager quest, I LOVED becoming a regular at a bar and getting to know everyone in it like I was playing some sort of weird Cheers game, I even loved the adult cam chats that came with wacky dialogue. This game is full of charm.
I haven’t mentioned the gameplay yet you might have noticed. That’s because, well, it’s a new direction for the franchise. It focuses on allowing more people to fight Kiryu at once and as a result feels less refined than recent entries Yakuza 0 and Yakuza 5. I am excited to see where they take it in Yakuza 7, but I would be fibbing if I suggested that I felt 6 plays as well as previous entries. Still, the entire Yakuza package is compelling and I never felt like I was scrambling for things to do or see. I don’t 100% games out of obligation. I’m not one of those people that feels the need to 100% every game I play. I 100%ed Yakuza 6 though. And I loved every minute of it, combat and all.
Tumblr media
3-) Valkyria Chronicles 4: As none of you might know, I used to review games for a website called 411mania. One of the games I reviewed for them was the original Valkyria Chronicles. Nobody else wanted to do it because it looked like a generic jRPG and I was really the only person on the site who liked jRPGs so the game fell to me. And I absolutely loved it. The story was captivating, the graphics were stylish and and the gameplay felt like a breath of fresh air. It was the combination of a tactical RPG and a (very, very simplified) shooter. To this day it remains one of my favorite games ever. Conversely, Valkyria Chronicles 2 on the PSP is one of my least favorite games ever and 3 never came to the states - though it does have a fan translation. The franchise has felt dead in the west for ages. The musou-like Azure Revolution sure as fuck didn’t get me going.
4 came out this year and it felt like I went back in time. Everything I loved about 1 was back. It’s even expanded upon. The grenadier is a great new troop that feels overpowered at first, but really forces the player to rethink how to approach certain situations. The story isn’t as good as the story in 1, but I found it simple and enjoyable. I genuinely liked the main cast and wanted to see them do well. That’s more than I can say for a lot of games. I know I mentioned earlier in my blurb about Mega Man that what I liked about it was that it actually felt like a new game. The difference here is that I have 10 other Mega Man games that play like Mega Man games. With this franchise, I have 1 (or maybe 2, I hate how maps work on the PSP but I have not played enough of 3 to judge). Sometimes a franchise revival needs to go “like the one you like but more” route. I loved this game and I hope as it gets cheaper more people try it.
2-) Dragon Quest XI: Hey you might notice this about my gaming preferences, but I really enjoy Japanese RPGs! And this sure as hell was one of those! DQ XI felt like a game from another dimension in a lot of ways. It’s a traditional playing Japanese RPG with a big AAA budget. It looks breathtaking. Big budget JRPGs feel like something out of the PS2 era, which is great because I sure love PS2 era RPGs. It’s lengthy, it has a crazy amount of postgame content and has a lot of side stuff in case you get tired of fighting down the main path. It’s a great throwback.
This game also has the most balanced party in recent RPG memory. Usually games like these have one or two party members that you just don’t enjoy. For instance, Final Fantasy X is one of my favorite games ever. But I just don’t like Kimahri. I don’t like using him and I don’t think his character is interesting. DQ XI has nobody like that. I found everybody likable. Sylvando and Jade in particular stand out and are among my favorite characters in gaming. Really, I enjoy everything about this game. Even the music! I know a lot of people complain about the simplified score in the western version, but I honestly found it to work out pretty well for the game. Obviously the Japanese version is superior, but I still enjoy it. If you’re a fan of RPGs and you haven’t played DQ XI, you’re missing out.
Tumblr media
1-) Super Smash Brothers Ultimate: This was my most anticipated game of 2018 from the moment it was announced and the final product delivered everything that I had hoped it would. You have a large cast of characters, a crazy number of stages and a bunch of single player content to consume in between bouts of online or local multiplayer. The single player is what ranks this game so high for me. The classic mode - think arcade mode in standard fighters - is easily the best it has ever been. Each character has their own route with their own gimmick, which gives the player incentive to play each and every one. With a roster of over 70 fighters, that’s impressive. The adventure mode can start off slow, but once you get into the groove of it I really think it stands out as something special. It’s an expanded version of event battles from past games. You face off against a fighter (or fighters) embodying the personality of a character that isn’t in the game. They range from obscure stuff you haven’t heard of to a fight with Geno’s spirit that has you do battle with the cast of Super Mario RPG (with substitutes for Geno and Mallow). It feels very creative. It can be grindy for some, but I really enjoyed my time with it.
I think the online could be more fleshed out. I don’t experience as many laggy matches as most people, but even still the options online are fairly bare bones. You don’t even have leaderboards. I want to compare how good I am with how good my friends are! I think Nintendo plans to keep this game alive for the duration of the Switch’s lifespan, so I believe there will be plenty of time to get the online situation perfect. That doesn’t really excuse Nintendo from still not getting online even close to right in 2018, but I find Ultimate to be such a complete package that I can look past these shortcomings. Ultimately, it is my favorite entry in one of my favorite franchises. So it’s pretty easily my game of the year.

Orchard Party
Tumblr media
For @aperturegaming011, mega request indeed!
You’ve been waiting for so long, and the number of characters made the entire project a lot more involved than its initial conception. I really hope you enjoy it, and that I captured your characters! It had to be its own short story so I’m slapping it under a...
"Good grief, Rhei. You didn't say I'd be having a festival in my front yard."
With a scratch at the light stubble along his chin, Rhei grinned, and neatly skipped up the steps of the Breezy Banks veranda. He threw his arm around Kutone's shoulders. "You specified no guidelines for this event." Nodding to the sprawl of tables and vineyard decorations, as well as the townspeople marveling the spread of autumn fare, Rhei gave his friend a fond squeeze. "A bit more gratitude would be nice."
Shaking Rhei off, Kutone squared her shoulders, letting her suit jacket settle back into a comfortable position. Despite Rhei's amused snort, she tugged next on the collar of her blouse. Routine, for old business. She crossed her arms. "You told me you had some guests for me to talk to?"
"Sure do." Rhei offered his hand. Rejected, of course, as Kutone slapped away the offer, and descended the veranda steps. Still, he chuckled. "Otherwise, you wouldn't give a shit about the other farmers around the valley--ah, no, sorry--was that too much?"
She glared as Rhei matched her pace. "Oh, do carry on. Business as usual."
"So I'm not getting an earful from your fiance?"
"Business. As usual."
"Come on, Kutone. He's become something of a little brother to me. I like pissing him off."
Golden rays spilled over the visible fields of autumn fare, and glinted through amber glassware offering candied yams, cranberry sauce, homemade stuffing, plum pudding--and even more than Kutone knew she'd requested for the event. Instead of reflecting her confusion, however, Rhei maintained a proud smirk. "It's amazing stuff," he said, "when a local farmer is also a top-tier chef."
A sweet laugh answered. "Mr. Young, you realize I'm not sitting on a cake, right?"
"That's not..." He masked his exasperation well, with an amused chuckle, as he waved someone over. "I'm not talking about cake tiers, Catherine."
"I guess that one was a little obscure of me." Catherine, bright green eyes sparkling, stepped away from the table and accepted Rhei's firm handshake. Then offering her hand next to Kutone, she laughed again. "Kind of a sour face, aren't you? Life's thrown you too many lemons?"
Kutone tried a light smile, as she shook Catherine's hand. "The day's making my face pucker, maybe," she said. "Having Rhei as an associate does that sometimes."
"Hey!"
"Quite the opposite, actually!" The strands of Catherine's blonde hair bounced as she nodded toward Rhei. "The man sponsored and got me out of the sour patch known as Joja. You don't need me to say more, do you?"
"I'm not here to dredge up awful memories," replied Kutone, "for my sake or yours." She gestured to the orchard party. "Rhei tells me he invited you on business? You must have prepared the spread here."
Catherine gasped, and cast an impressed expression in Rhei's direction. "She's a sharp knife, that's for sure! Tell me that you're enjoying it so far!"
"I unfortunately haven't had a chance to try it yet, but," Kutone paused and turned in her spot, nodding to the Pelican Town residents gaily tucking in, as well as the amber ambiance. "This is beautiful, top-floor restaurant fare here. Do you have your own location?"
"Maybe I should sit on top of a cake at this point!" Catherine laughed. She clasped her hands together, as though in prayer. "Though, it is my dream to open up a restaurant. So when Young told me an old friend of his had a fantastic vineyard in the works, I had to come check it out. I understand, you'll be unveiling an original blend soon?"
At this, Kutone shot a glare toward Rhei, who uneasily averted his eyes and pulled at his collar.
Catherine pressed a hand over her mouth. "Oops, I guess I spilled some milk here? Please don't mind me!"
"I don't, and I won't," Kutone replied, digging a sharp knuckle into Rhei's side. "I'm surprised no one else has asked me, really, with this great flapping mouth of his."
"I was talking business!" Rhei whimpered, cringing and curling away from Kutone's jab. "Catherine wanted to pair some of her signature autumn dishes with your drinks, so I told her about testing your new blend!"
"He told me nothing more than that, I promise," Catherine added. "Since I had no idea if it was even a red or white wine, I prepared a variety here to take the guessing out of the picture!" She offered her hand again. "Kutone, when I make my dream come true, I'm hoping you'll let me carry your wines on the menu?"
If not her puns, her enthusiasm was infectious. Kutone accepted a second, eager handshake, as she chuckled. "So long as you're okay with Rhei being our go-between."
"I wouldn't have it any other way!"
They exchanged business cards, Rhei adding he'd send a mock-up of a wine menu for Catherine's consideration, before Catherine turned next to Gus and Elliot. Both in awe of the artistry and taste of the dishes, they already had wine pairings to discuss with the up-and-coming restauranteur.
Meanwhile, Rhei guided Kutone past the banquet tables, toward the vined arches leading to the farm's main orchards. They weren't permanent, Rhei assured, unless Kutone wanted to keep them. "Don't get me wrong," she responded. "They're a nice touch, but once this event's over, they're gone."
"Sometimes I forget you're a minimalist."
"You forget a lot of things in your age, Mr. Young, sir."
At this, Rhei crossed his arms, and turned up his lip, mocking an offended pout. "Stand yourself corrected, miss! I remember that cruel tone of voice very well!"
Cackles answered in Kutone's stead. "Big, bad businessman just got one-upped by the wino!"
Hardly the description Kutone would have used for Rhei, but it was comical enough to grab their attentions, and a legitimate frown from Rhei. Following the voice, he turned to one of the benches nestled between the arches, where two girls sat giggling.
One of them, at least, was familiar to Kutone. "Lay off, old friend,” she said, laying a hand on Rhei’s arm. “I told you about Jane, didn't I?"
"I'm assuming she's the one currently not laughing at your supposed one-up?"
"Still giggling, but yes." Kutone lifted a hand in greeting, as she approached Jane and her friend.
"You've some explaining to do," said Kutone, mocking a patronizing tone. "I don't take kindly to people other than me giving my old friend a hard time."
Rhei ground his knuckles into Kutone's shoulder. "I'm hearing the word 'old' too many times, Kutone."
While Jane, face hidden behind her curtain of black hair, giggled helplessly at the banter, her friend shrugged. Her fair features held a perpetual smugness that, when she spoke, added to her playful tone. "Well at least it's obvious who's wearing the pants in this partnership."
"It's why I don't wear skirts," said Kutone, smiling. "But giving Rhei a break for just one second here..."
Jane pressed her hands together, nodded, and pulled her phone from her pocket. After a bit of typing, she flashed the message to Kutone and Rhei.
My friend, Glaser, began the message. weve been enjoying the party and talking video games this entire time!
"Just sucks that I don't know the language to talk to you so you don't have to keep typing and playing charades, y'know?" Glaser huffed and crossed her legs, directing her attention to Kutone. "What a sharp-lookin' bitch though--you're sure you're a farmer?"
"And businesswoman," Kutone added. "Rhei here is basically my mentor."
Jane gasped, and quickly tapped out another message. It's very nice to meet you, sir!
"Good grief, finally some shred of good vibes in my direction," Rhei replied. Accepting Jane's amiable handshake, he flashed a handsome smile. "You're also a valley local?"
With a deep nod, Jane threw an arm around Glaser's shoulders.
"Both of you, eh? How do you like the Banks, then?"
"Makes me feel good to know a chica's running the place," said Glaser. "Or maybe I should be more respectful, senorita?"
Kutone shook her head. "Say whatever you want about me. I don't particularly care."
Jane landed a light but purposeful slap on Glaser's shoulder. Cheeks puffed and brow furrowed, she leveled a meaningful glare.
Glaser rolled her eyes and shrugged. "Fine, I'll be nice, just because she's your friend. And because she runs a fuckin' winery from her backyard." She shot a calculating glance toward Rhei. "And also 'cause the old man's not nearly as annoying as I thought he'd be."
Rhei threw his hands up. "Kutone, if you need me, I'll be on the other side of the estate arranging your other meetings, okay? Okay."
"Hey now, no rage quitting!" Glaser jeered, "You can't go AFK and ghost us like this! Hey!"
Kutone snickered at Rhei's retreating back, meandering back through the banquet tables on his way to the farm's entrance. Noticing Jane's concerned frown, she gestured toward him. "No need to worry about him--he's used to far more cruelty than that."
"Bet you really jerked him around, huh?" Glaser leaned back against the bench, and sagely shook her head. "You can't get to be a powerful girl without stomping over some stupid chicos, y'know? Is he your bitch?"
Jane pressed both hands to her face and deeply sighed.
But Kutone snorted. "Far from it. I'm his producer, he's my distributor. We've known each other in too many ways for too many years for us to have some better-than-thou relationship here."
"That's almost boring."
After a contemplative silence, Jane's fingers tapped out another message on her phone. She considered the words with a cock of her head, but with a nod, showed it first to Kutone, then to Glaser to fill her in on the conversation.
i think its amazing how u get along with ppl, kutone. esp when youre as close to a business partner as you are. like... it feels like u and rei are so much more than what youre saying.
As Glaser pulled a grim, suspicious expression, Kutone simpered. "We were. Once. Before we stabbed each other in our backs and realized we just weren’t meant to be.”
"So how do you get to be buddy-buddy-business-partners without killing him or being friends with benefits, huh?"
Kutone winked. "I have a fiance who's a far better match than Rhei could ever be. Rhei's already come to terms with that."
rei's kind of amazing in his own right?
"Now, why would I ever be so kind as to admit that?"
"Tell it like it is, senorita!" Glaser laughed. "You and me could have drinks sometime and talk more about this type of shit!"
She could appreciate that refreshing sort of rudeness, especially over drinks at the Stardrop Saloon. Definitely in moderation though--Glaser seemed like the type to easily rub off on people. Heaven forbid Kutone started talking to Rhei, or even her lovely boy like that; they'd surely crack and break down.
Leaving Glaser and Jane with a wave, Kutone followed Rhei's path: back across the banqueting area, along the stepping stones to the farm's entrance. Seeing Rhei in conversation--heated conversation--with other suits, she squared her shoulders stepped into the ring. "Problem, gentlemen?"
It was a rhetorical question, but an effective one to get the suits off of Rhei and on to her. Not that Morris, bespectacled pudgy face creased into an ever-worsening scowl, needed the distraction. Neither did the other two suits with him, but Morris stood to his fully unimpressive height, and adjusted the bright red, oversized bowtie at his neck. "A pleasure to see you, Kutone," he sniffed. "It's been some time since I last saw you and this community--I found myself wistful, you know."
The lie through his teeth couldn't have hissed harder, but Kutone shrugged and gestured to the party behind her. "Pardon my bluntness here, but I remember my colleague saying participants needed invitations to attend this event. Did he extend you one?"
Rhei, keeping an easy expression over his restrained irritation, crossed his arms. "Well, no," he started. "Morris here never saw your products as worthy of his attention so, I saw no point to inviting him."
"Yet I am a member of this community," said Morris, face already turning pink. "Certainly, I've been away awhile, but once a soul of Pelican Town, there's no leaving it, yes? I believe I deserve a spot in this party!"
Kutone gave a low, sage nod. "Duly noted, so, I'm keeping this short, Morris. Get out."
"I've even forgiven the assault Pierre made on me--you notice I never charged him!"
"Yes, and I'm not interested in making any deals with Joja either."
"Mighty words from someone using a Joja turncoat as her distributor! I'm saying lose the middleman--you'll find we can offer more benefits, a greater network, than whatever Young can muster!"
"An accomplishment and a half," said Kutone, Rhei snickering next to her. "Do come back some time to prove it though; I'd love to see how you can do Rhei's work better than he can."
"Brat. You think you're untouchable, don't you? You just happen to be on these people's good sides--which isn't that hard to do, might I add; country bumpkins and their magnanimous stupidity were always the easiest to manipulate--but wait until I tell them everything you kept in the dark!" With an evil snigger, Morris pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "After all, Miss Kutone, you know a thing or two about a tarnished reputation?"
"I do, but you wouldn't dare--"
"Wouldn't I now?"
Rhei stepped forward, shoving hard against the suits protecting Morris. "Can the threats. You can't do anything until she signs your agreement, anyway."
"Which she'll end up having to do when her rotten name brings down revenue!" Morris reached into an inner pocket and pulled out his phone. "Just one call, Young my friend."
"Don't--!"
"All's fair in the war of business!"
At the moment Morris looked down at his phone, however, a tall silhouette behind him grabbed the collar of his dress shirt and lifted his entire body from the ground. Feet dangling, Morris flailed like a swinging sack of flour. "Who--?! Put me down! Put me down, or I'll press charges!"
Unfazed, the man lifted Morris higher, reducing the Joja Sneer into a babbling squeal. Morris flailed harder, pointing at his bodyguards. "Do something! Get this man off of me!"
Morris's men weren't moving anytime soon. That much was a certainty to Kutone, mouth agape at the metallic sheen of the mystery man's hand holding Morris aloft. Not just his hand, either--both of his legs looked like they came out of a sci-fi superhero movie. Even his eye, for crying out loud, flickered a dangerous red.
Rhei whistled. "Now I've really seen it all."
But there was, Kutone thought, a certain softness to the man's dark hair and fair features, even as he whispered, "She said leave. So leave," and dropped Morris with a dull whump.
Morris couldn't have scrabbled away any faster, bodyguards in tow and cursing something about coming back to make the deal again.
While Kutone stared, Rhei gave her a nudge and turned to their benefactor. "Appreciate it, sir. Sure felt good to see him squealing like that."
Sir? Kutone tried, but failed, to figure out how this man could be Rhei's superior.
Luckily, Rhei filled in the gap, as the man averted his eyes from Kutone's baffled expression. "If you want to know how the Empire's tearing up the Republic, you're staring at that answer. Defectors like him are the only reason why Ferngill's hanging on to what little edge it's got."
"A soldier," murmured Kutone. She pressed a hand to her chest, and smiled. "Then I have to thank you even more."
The red light in his eye faded to a curious green, as he glanced up momentarily to meet Kutone's gaze. "It's nothing."
Another man, summer-sun-caramelized features practically glowing with his amicable smile, jogged through the party area as he waved for attention. "James!" Finally catching up, he let out an exasperated gasp, and laid a hand on James's shoulder. "Good grief, James, that jump over the whole venue nearly gave Harvey a heart attack, you know! And--and now you're making friends with the hosts?"
James turned away, apparently refusing to regale his companion with a response. Rhei offered his hand to bridge the awkward silence. "Rhei Young," he said. "And the vintner herself, Kutone."
"Pleasure." The young man accepted handshakes from both Kutone and Rhei. "I'm Jake--Harvey let me in on his invitation; James through Abigail."
How all these people knew each other despite the valley's isolation was beyond Kutone. Her attention, however, fell on the metal bits poking through the skin of Jake's left arm. If James was anything to go by... "You're a soldier too?"
"Was," Jake corrected. "Can't do much jet piloting with a busted arm and cruddy grip."
"At least it's an honorable discharge," Rhei replied. "Thanks for your service."
"Flying across Hell and back was well worth it, I'd say," said Jake, "since it meant we protected the lives and magic Stardew Valley has to offer. I mean, all this good food, and good wine? You're an inspiration, Miss Kutone."
"Nothing compared to two men who've been to Hell and back," said Kutone, simpering. "I'm guessing you're local to the area as well?"
"Along with James here. We'll be sure to stop by and offer some of our goods too. Right James?"
James had finally settled on watching Kutone with a placid expression. At Jake's question, he nodded, the flicker of a smile barely ghosting his features. He needed some work, thought Kutone, but she found him likable enough. Somewhat and adorably reminiscent of her fiance.
Rhei, checking his watch, pressed a hand into the small of Kutone's back. "We've got an unveiling, Kutone," he said, gesturing back to the orchards. "Time to bring up the barrel and tap, don't you think?"
A spirited glint sparked in Jake's eyes. "Maybe I can help in some way?"
As Rhei and Jake marched off, Kutone laid a light touch on James's arm, and offered him space to walk with her. "I could use your help again as well," she gently murmured. "If you'd be so willing?"
Another small smile. He wordlessly matched her pace, slow as she was in her pumps, down the stone path leading to her veranda. Rhei and Jake were already inside heading into the cellars, as Kutone and James ventured after them.
It was then he spoke again. "What did you call it? Your wine?"
She stopped at the threshold, turning to face James, as well as the orchard party before them. Sunset skies burgeoning into the deep indigo of twilight, the scenery, she admitted, matched the mood of the wine she'd created. Behind her, inside the house, Rhei's and Jake's voices echoed up from the cellar, as well as her fiance's voice irritably bantering with Rhei.
"Rosé Memoria," she replied, pressing a hushing finger against her lips. "Like the semi-sweet recollections of a bygone summer. Or of meeting new people. Catching, isn't it?”

Nothing would really happen if people found out, it’s just hotter if we keep it a secret.
Ship:  Bucky Barnes/Clint Barton/Darcy Lewis For:  @holieshka Trope:  Secret Relationship
“Shhhh!”  Darcy whispered.  “Just… stay… under the blanket.”
“She’s gonna see us.  No way do you have this many pillows…” Bucky muttered, wrapping himself around her left leg regardless.
“Jane won’t.  Thor might…”  Clint replied, wrapping around Darcy’s other leg as she spread the blankets out over top of them.
Jane popped her head in through the bedroom door.  “Darcy… do you want some coffee?”
She folded her hands and grinned widely at her best friend/colleague/roommate.  “Does a bear crap in the woods?”
The door was closed soon after.  Bucky and Clint emerged from the blankets.
“Wow, you weren’t kidding.  She didn’t even notice!”  Bucky exclaimed, leaning back against the pillows.
“I still don’t know why we’re hiding this,” Clint grumbled.
Darcy rolled over to encircle his waist with her arms.  “Because.  It’s almost become a game now to see how little Jane notices.  And it’s mega hot to make out with you guys in secret.”

New on Netflix: December 2020 Releases
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The year is almost over. The Hargreeves kids have saved the world and Beth Harmon has checkmated her last opponent. But in its new releases for December 2020, Netflix still has some tricks up its sleeve.
For starters, Netflix is ending this most curious year with some promising original films. David Fincher’s long-awaited Mank arrives on Dec. 4 to fill us in on the story of Citizen Kane‘s screenwriter. Then on Dec. 11, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and James Corden do their best musical impression with The Prom. Chadwick Boseman’s final film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom debuts on Dec. 18. Then George Clooney rounds out the month with The Midnight Sky on Dec. 23.
But of course, it’s in the original series realm where Netflix does most of its work. The biggest one comes at month’s end this December. The final season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premieres on New Year’s Eve. Prior to that, Big Mouth season 4 debuts on Dec. 4 and Shonda Rhimes first Netflix effort Bridgerton premieres on Christmas Day.
Netflix’s library isn’t swelling too much this month with only E.T. and Jurassic Park being the classic genre movies of note. But with that lineup of original films and series, we should have plenty to ring in the New Year with.

How far would a USWNT B-team go in the World Cup?
Tumblr media
Photo by Quality Sport Images/Getty Images
The rest of the world is getting better, but the United States still has depth like no one else.
United States Women’s National Team central defender Abby Dahlkemper recently gave an interview to Business Insider in which she declared, “We have the first- and second-best teams in the world.” There’s no doubt the USWNT has the best and deepest team in international women’s soccer, but the suggestion that the B-team could be so good seems preposterous on its face.
While the USWNT was undoubtedly the best team at the last World Cup, it hardly had an easy time. France, ranked No. 4 in the world, and England, currently No. 6, gave the Americans difficult games.
But just because they wouldn’t be No. 2 doesn’t mean the USWNT B-team wouldn’t be extremely good. Dahlkemper’s interview got me thinking about how good that team might be, and why.
Why is the USWNT pool so deep?
Title IX was passed in 1972, but it still has an incredible influence on the USWNT’s dominance in international soccer to this day. Soccer fans and coaches have endless debates about how to improve or do away with high school and college soccer, as well as pay-to-play academies, but they’re still getting more players into the game than any other country.
Private academies aren’t subject to Title IX, which dictates that any educational program receiving federal financial assistance must provide equal opportunities for boys and girls, but they are directly affected by it. Because there are as many athletic scholarships available to girls as there are to boys, parents are just as willing to pay for their girls to get top soccer coaching as they are for their boys, and the market responds to that.
Whether American soccer players get development opportunities as high quality as their European or Asian rivals is very much up for debate. What isn’t is the sheer volume of Americans that are decent professionals. The best player in the world isn’t an American in most years. Hell, the 10 best players in the world are usually not American. But the United States is the only country that has 20 of the best 100, and probably 100 of the best 500 players in the world.
What does the international landscape look like right now?
Here are the current FIFA rankings. Before you cringe at the prospect of discussing teams’ quality in terms of FIFA rankings, I should let you know they’re different from the men’s rankings. FIFA has a bizarre formula for the men, while the women’s ranking is heavily ELO-based.
The current top four — USA, Germany, Netherlands and France — are probably the four best teams in the world without argument. Nos. 5 and 6, Sweden and England, are also top-tier teams with some caveats. Sweden are a bit boosted by excellent head coach Peter Gerhardsson, while England have the talent to be No. 2, but are probably being held back by struggling head coach Phil Neville. Those six teams form the top tier, and then there’s a bit of a drop-off.
Nos. 7-10 are Australia, Canada, Brazil and Japan, at which point there’s another drop-off. No. 13 Spain likely belongs in this tier, but haven’t climbed due to a difficult World Cup draw that saw them face Germany and the USWNT. Another handful of teams are solid, but you’re firmly into strugglers with semi-pro players in key roles after No. 23 New Zealand.
The short answer: They’re a World Cup knockout team, but not elite
Given the above, I think the USWNT B-team would definitely make the World Cup knockout stage. I think it’s possible that they could also be favored in their Round of 16 game and make it to the quarterfinal. But at that stage, they’d run into a team as good as them or better. Assuming the top four avoided massive upsets, won their groups and made the quarterfinal, I think one of Germany, Netherlands or France would beat USWNT B at that stage.
The holes in Australia, Canada and Brazil’s lineups were exposed in the Round of 16 during the 2019 World Cup. All of those teams have several starters who play in NWSL, alongside the players that would be in USWNT B, and do not significantly outperform them. Being a decent NWSL starter qualifies you to start for second-tier national teams, so it’s reasonable to guess that a match between these teams and USWNT B would be extremely competitive.
Not satisfied with the short answer? Let’s get into the weeds
If you’re an ardent follower of women’s soccer, nothing above was news to you. I think you’re here because you want to argue about who would make the USWNT B-team, and so do I, so let’s get to it.
Perhaps Dahlkemper meant the USWNT’s second XI is the second-best team in the world, but no one takes 11 players to a tournament. I’m giving the USWNT its current 23-woman squad, subbing in Alex Morgan for Jessica McDonald, since Morgan is clearly first choice when fit. I get to choose from the rest of the pool.
In making this squad, I tried to give myself options to change the game. In most positions, I’ve taken two completely different styles of players. Some players are not in their ideal positions because we had some holes to fill, and I opted for talent over perfect fit a few times.
There were also some reaaaaaaaaally painful omissions. I think USWNT C would be a Round of 16 team too. I’m dead serious.
Goalkeepers: Aubrey Bledsoe, Jane Campbell, Casey Murphy
Tough omission — Claudia Dickey: The UNC and Under-20s keeper could start for a lot of countries, but there’s a serious logjam in front of her.
Left backs: Gabby Seiler, Hailie Mace
Tough omission — Tegan McGrady: Hopefully she’ll be fit enough to cement her place with the Washington Spirit this season, but she’s just played very little soccer in the past year.
Right backs: Sarah Gorden, Gaby Vincent
Tough omission — Emily Fox: Unfortunately, the UNC right back tore her ACL at the end of last season and I can’t guess what she’ll look like when she comes back.
Center backs: Alana Cook, Samantha Staab, Emily Menges, Naomi Girma
Tough omission — Maycee Bell: Probably still a bit too raw for the big show at just 19 years old, but you’re going to see her play in a World Cup for the full NT someday.
Defensive midfielders: Sarah Killion, Danielle Colaprico
Tough omission — Allie Long: This feels cruel and unfair. Long has been a really good player for the Reign and would start for most World Cup teams. The DM pool is just too deep.
Central midfielders: Morgan Brian, McCall Zerboni
Tough omission — Jordan DiBiasi: The technically gifted Spirit midfielder was just a tad inconsistent in her rookie season, but she’s mega talented.
Attacking midfielders: Vanessa DiBernardo, Brianna Pinto
Tough omission — Sofia Huerta: Is Huerta one of the 46 most talented players in America? Absolutely. Did she show it last season? Not at all.
Wingers: Kristen Hamilton, Jessica McDonald, Darian Jenkins, Alexa Spaanstra
Tough omission — Paige Monaghan: Her numbers at Sky Blue are really solid but I don’t think she has Spaanstra or Jenkins’ ability to change the game with one play.
Strikers: Sophia Smith, Margaret Purce
Tough omission — Savannah McCaskill: She’s shown flashes of brilliance with Sky Blue and Chicago, but hasn’t shown she can give 90 good minutes two games in a row.
This team obviously lacks the star power of the teams in that No. 5-11 range that I think they’d have tough games against, but has better strength in depth than all of them. Let me know where you think I went wrong with the squad selection, or which other international teams you think could beat this team.

Like any style trend, beauty is cyclical. Some trends worked, some didn’t, but the only way to know is to try them. One of our favorite beauty era is the ‘70s. Badass babes, metallic dresses, fur coats, fabulous dance moves... ugh, take us back. This was also the time of rebellion. We love the feel of ‘70s beauty trends. The mix of masculine and feminine, the bold, blunt hairdos and the fabulously fierce dresses and outfits, they add up to a look so rock-and-roll we can’t even think straight. Flashing back to the era of Woodstock, hippies and major hard rock we have the best and most killer hair look to date: the short shag.   From past to present, these looks give us the shivers…in a really good way. Here are some of our favorite old school babes who put the shag hairstyle to work for them.  Old School Short Shag Hairstyles   Debbie Harry, 1978 Photo: Shutterstock  Debbie Harry was the lead singer of the band “Blondie,” a mega-popular punk-rock band from the late 1970s to early 1980s. The singer became known for hits like “The Tide Is High” and “One Way or Another,” in addition to leading the way in the fashion world for trends like her short shaggy ‘do. She paired her short shaggy hair with choppy bangs. Her short shaggy hair was accompanied by her luscious curls.     Jane Fonda, 1970 Photo: AP Images  Activist and actress, Jane Fonda had a rather eventful year in 1970. Her mugshots appear from the time she was arrested for “drug-smuggling” some vitamins on her way to Cleveland. According to an excerpt from her memoir, “My Life So Far,” Fonda said, “Perhaps I used to hide behind [my hair],” she wrote. Vogue writer Mackenzie Wagoner phrased Fonda’s new-hair experience quite concisely in a 2017 article , ‘It was at that moment, when realizing she had become afraid of much bigger things than of being herself, she met hairstylist Paul McGregor and gave him a simple demand: “Do something.”’ That something ended up being her brunette, short shaggy hair.  View this post on Instagram A post shared by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (@joanjett) on Apr 1, 2016 at 1:31pm PDT 1970s rock-and-roller Joan Jett (@joanjett on Instagram) brought her short shaggy hair to the forefront of her look, still a part of her today. Jett is known for rock favorites like “Bad Reputation” and “Cherry Bomb.” Her hair suits her music and her voice, sexy and wild. Jett has kept her shag jet-black for as long as we’ve seen her around and heck if it’s not perfect for her.     Stevie Nicks, 1982 Photo: Getty Images  Famous for hit songs like “Edge of Seventeen” and “Rhiannon,” rocker-queen Stevie Nicks loved her shaggy blonde hair through the 1970s and 1980s. She wore her hair a bit longer than the other rock-and-rollers of her time, but she looked incredible enough with her shaggy hair that we had to include her.  Pixie Short Shag Hairstyles In today’s day and age, short shaggy hair is making a comeback. It’s not just cool from the 70s anymore. It’s cool hair for the modern woman, embracing the slightly masculine sex appeal of the look. Like Jane Fonda, I can relate to wanting something different to do with my hair. I chopped my own earlier this year into a short shaggy pixie cut. It was the perfect way to get myself ready for the next phase of my life. I stand strongly with my favorite quote from Coco Chanel, “A woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life.” These modern celebrity trendsetters show us how to rock the short shaggy hairdo with ease.     Rihanna (@badgalriri on Instagram) looks incredible with almost every hairstyle a person can imagine, but her short shaggy pixie was definitely one of our favorites. She wore it black for Vogue in 2014, but Riri has also had this short shaggy hair in bright red and bright pink.    PHOTO COURTESY: Jeffrey Mayer/WireImage  Actress Keke Palmer (@keke on Instagram) has tried some particularly eccentric hairstyles, but this short shaggy pixie hair is one of her best. She keeps it cropped extremely close to her head so although it is a shag, it also appears chic and clean-cut.    View this post on Instagram A post shared by Cara Delevingne (@caradelevingne) on Aug 9, 2019 at 10:51am PDT View this post on Instagram A post shared by Cara Delevingne (@caradelevingne) on Jan 1, 2018 at 12:18pm PST Cara Delevingne (@caradelevingne on Instagram) is well-known for her own short shaggy hair. Her short shaggy hair oozes sex appeal, and we can’t look away.  So What Do We Think? We think the short shaggy hair look should be and will be around for a long time to come. It’s cute and sexy, stylish and chic. It works for pretty much everyone, no matter how you look. Give short shaggy hair a try, the next time you consider chopping your locks. We can’t wait to see!
