Darling
Neil Perry x reader
Dead Poets Society
Word Count; 1655
Warning; maybe some angst, fluff, and crying
Summary: Mr. Perry doesn't want his son to be an actor, so instead he pulls Neil out of Welton. How will (Y/N) react when she finds out?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Neil stared at the ceiling of his dorm room. He could hear the thudding of shoes outside of his door, which was strange considering that it was the middle of the night. Soon a knock sounded and rang through his small room, making his eyebrows thorough before arising to his feet and walking towards the door. He opened it and saw her.
It was easy to see her, she stood out like a sore thumb, not only being one of the few girls that attended Welton that year, but she had a glow around her as it would seem to him. The way she would glide through the halls of the school. The way her voice rang out and sounded like a choir of angels to him. Her eyes would shine and would light up every one of the dark, dusty old classrooms that Welton had to offer.
"Darling?" he questioned, his eyebrows furrowing.
"Is... is it true? Please don't say they're true..." her voice turning into a whisper into the end of her sentence. She didn't realize how much until she had heard it for herself.
Neil knew exactly what she was talking about, his father was pulling him out of school... to attend a military school before he was to get into Harvard and become a doctor, his father's dream instead of his own. He told Todd about it after he had come back from the talk with his father after that Todd said he had to go to the bathroom. Apparently, instead, Todd must have raced down to the girl's dorms and told (Y/N) what had happened.
"Why are you here?" he interrogated, quickly changing the matter of the conversation, "You of all people should know that you aren't allowed out of bed past curfew, and- "
"Stop changing the subject, Neil... please... please just tell me." Her voice wavering and starting to turn into a whimper.
"They are, darling. And I'm sorry that I didn't tell you before I just... I just d-didn't know how..." he whispered the last few words, his voice fragmenting. Tears were starting to gather in his eyes, turning them glassy. It was dark, but he could tell by her voice that she may have already been crying or currently is. He wrapped his arms around her, snaking around her waist, the usual spot to when he would hold her close. But the difference is that they would be happier and not having tears roll down their cheeks, making their eyes red and their noses blocked. Sobs broke out and racked her body, Neil kept his more quiet, instead of muffling them as he rested his head on hers, taking in her scent of her. It may have been the last time he would have been able to hold her this close. The last time he would be able to smell her, to see her or hear her.
"Please don't go... please..."
"I-I don't want to go... I can't live without you, darling."
"Then stay... not just for me. But for Todd, Knox, Meeks and Charlie and Pitts... even Cameron. Just please... don't go."
"I can't... I'm sorry but I have to. I- "
"Fine," she sighed, pulling away slightly to wipe her tears before leaning back into his touch. "But let me stay the night at least..." with that he nodded and walked inside.
"As you wish, darling." He leads her past a sleeping Todd and to his own bed. Before lying down, while she took off her shoes and the coat what she had wrapped around her body. He held up the blanket until she was next to him and he had an arm around his waist. He dropped the covers, letting the covers fall of them, enveloping them both in a cocoon of warmth.
When morning came, his bags were at the end of his bed, they were already full of the clothes that he needs and all the stuff that he had bought to Welton from his own room. The drawers of his desk were empty, the slippers at the end of his bed were gone. His bedside table was void of all the poems that he was writing, as well as the doodles and the storied he would create in his spare time. Most of the scribbles, or words, some of the papers would be about her. How she made him feel like he was truly alive, or the pressure of his father would weight down on his shoulders and crush his spirit from time to time.
She was still asleep though, her mouth slightly agape as her chest would fall up and down, up and down, indicating that she was still alive and still breathing. He started at her, his eyes scanning all the small nuances of her face, memorizing it, remembering it. Of course, he had a picture of her, but it wouldn't be the same as having her there with him. His hand rested in her hair, stroking it and feeling the silkiness of it through his fingers. He sighed softly, pressing his lips to her forehead and letting them sit there for a moment before pulling away, making sure that no hair was in her face, not obscuring his view of her.
Todd had one eye open, feeling his heartache slightly for the two lovers. As he saw Neil move, he would shut his eyes and put off the façade of being asleep. Neil reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper, placing it on the desk so she would see it when she awoke.
He stood up. Putting his coat and scarf on, seeing that the snow was still falling outside. He looked back down at her, feeling his heartbreak for a second, his hands wrapped around the handles of his suitcases and trunk before walking out the door. Charlie and Meeks were both awake already, being the two across the hall from Todd and Neil. They had heard the exchange and the sound of soft cries last night while playing a game of cards. They both gave Neil a look of pity, while he gave them both a nod, walking down the hall after closing his door.
The small sound of the door closing was enough to wake (Y/N), her eyes landing on the piece of folded paper on the bedside table, feeling the cold of the empty part of the bed, knowing that he had gone. She sat up, slipping on her shoes quickly, still hearing his feet walking down the hall. She grabbed the piece of paper and unfolded it. She instantly recognized the scribbles as Neil's handwriting.
When I close my eyes in the darkness, your light Lights the way for me, we can walk forever without fear, you and I It's okay to be you Don't lie to yourself anymore No matter how far apart we are your light shines on me I never thought there'd be a sleepless night Turn out they weren't lies What is love? If there is an answer. I want to know it right now
(Y/N) looked up and saw Todd looking at her. "Go." He simply said before she shot right up, forgetting her coat and running after him. She could see him closing the trunk to a car, his father in the front seat, waiting for Neil to get in before driving off.
"Neil!" she cupped her hands around her mouth and yelled his name. his head shot up and looked towards her. As the snow fell and landed in her hair. He started to walk towards her, which soon turned into running. As he heard the crunch of the snow underneath his feet and the wind on his face, making his cheeks red.
"What are you doing here, darling? You're supposed to be asleep..." he said, wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his forehead against hers.
"You were going to leave without saying goodbye." She mused.
"I know, but that's what the poem was for- why aren't you wearing a coat?! It's freezing." He said and took off his won coat, wrapping it around her and soon wrapping his scarf around her neck.
When she called for him, it was loud enough for his father to hear her. When he saw Neil taking off his coat, it was the last straw for him.
"Neil Perry!" his father's voice boomed as he got out of the car, walking towards the young couple. "What do you think you're doing? Get back in the car!" Neil's looked behind him as he held her hand in his, intertwining his fingers with hers before he stood behind her. "This girl is a distraction and you shouldn't even be talking to her!" his father continued to shout. It took a moment for Neil to notice that his father's hand was beginning to rise. He acted fast and moved in front of her, taking the blow for her.
Unlike many times before this, he stood tall and looked at his father. "No." he stated, "This is my life, and you can't control it. I love (Y/N), with all my heart and I want to become an actor... and I don't care if you want me to become a doctor or not." Neil's father was taken aback by his son's outburst. But he accepted it, still feeling rage seethes within him before he walked back to the car.
"Make sure to take your bags out of the trunk." His father said before getting into the driver's seat.
Neil sighed in relief as he looked back at(Y/N), he smiled before capturing her lips, his grip on her waist tightened. Before pulling away and resting his forehead against hers. Sometimes he wished that he could freeze time, he wanted this moment to last forever. He wanted the world to disappear, leaving just the two of you, alone.
