Learn about the Sudanese revolution, the significance of December 19, and a legacy of resistance and resilience.
Join our call to action today and everyday during Sudan Action Week.
December 19 2023
Tumblr media
Transcript:
Breaking it down
What is the Sudanese Revolution?
The Sudanese Revolution refers to the popular uprising in Sudan that began on December 19, 2018 and eventually deposed 30-year dictator of Sudan, Omar al-Bashir, on April 11 of 2019.
How did the Revolution begin?
Protests first began in Atbara, a city with historical significance to the labor movement in Sudan, in response to the rising costs of basic supplies such as bread and fuel.
Protestors set fire to the national party headquarters, and the news of their revolt quickly spread, inspiring protestors first in other cities, and then in the capital of Khartoum itself.
Online, the caption #TasgutBas, translating to #JustFall, grew in popularity and helped connect the diaspora to those in Sudan.
Was it really just bread?
No. The rising cost of bread in developing nations is an indicator of how badly the economy is strained, to the point where it impacts members of every social class.
At this point in time in Sudan, subsidies on essential goods had been rolled back, funding for social and state services such as healthcare and education was nearly nonexistent, and it is estimated that nearly 90% of economic activity took place in the informal sector, all while the military budget continually increased.
Tumblr media
Transcript:
Who led the charge? Creating a revolution
Group: Sudanese Professional's association (SPA)
Who they are:
Group of labor and trade organizations formed in secret in 2012 and publicly declared in 2016
Backbone of grassroots organizing in Sudan
Role played:
Led action on the street, organized national protests, like the initial march on Khartoum for increased wages before the transition to calls for regime change, and worker strikes.
Group: Local Resistance Committees (LRCS)
Who they are:
Initially formed as groups of students and youth organized together on the more local, neighbourhood basis during the Bashir era
Membership is extremely diverse across socio-economic, ethnic, tribal, religious, and political lines
Role played:
Considered the lifeblood of the revolution, with youth organizing local protests and ensuring safety against governmental repression by standing on the front lines + providing security, food, water, and medication to people
Group: Forces for freedom and change (FFC)
Who they are:
Coalition comprising the SPA, LRCS, the Sudan Revolutionary Front (group of anti-governmental Darfur militias), political parties, and civil society groups
Role played:
Essentially became the political mouthpiece of the revolution and signed onto the transitional government with the military on behalf of Sudanese civilians
It is also crucial to note that from a demographic perspective, it is youth and women that largely led and comprised the Sudanese Revolution.
Tumblr media
Trabscript:
How did the revolution succeed?
01. Learning from the Past
Following the Arab Spring wave, Sudan also attempted a revolution in September of 2013
Civilians faced violent crackdowns within the first three days of protest. 200 killed, 800+ arrested
Activists were deterred from mobilization + felt a lot of guilt at the massive loss of life and spent the next 5 years grounding themselves in the study of nonviolent theory and action
02. Building a Movement
Coalition Building and People Power
Diversification of the reach of the movement to make sure all sectors of Sudani society were represented
Decentralization of Activism
Past revolutions in 1964 and 1985 were concentrated in the labor movement and educational elites in Khartoum
This time, experienced nonviolent activists trained those in the capital and ensured ethnic, religious, and tribal diversity
Newly trained activists then taught others locally across the Sudanese states

Transcript:
Why december 19?
On December 19, 1955, the Sudanese parliament unanimously adopted a declaration of independence from the Anglo-Egyptian colonial power.
The declaration went into effect on January 1, 1956, which is why Independence Day is officially January 1, but December 19 is when the Sudanese people were truly liberated from colonial rule.
The flag shown is Sudan's independence flag. The blue is for the Nile, the yellow for the Sahara, and the green for the farmlands.
The current Sudanese flag was adopted in 1970, with the colors used being the Pan-Arab ones.
During the 2019 revolution, protestors often carried the independence flag instead as a form of resistance to the narrative of an exclusive Pan-Arab Sudanese identity.
December 19 is ultimately a tribute to Sudanese strength and resilience. It honors our independence and revolutionary martyrs - not just those of the 2019 revolution, but the democratic revolutions of 1964 and 1985 as well.
Tumblr media
Transcript:
Why is the revolution ongoing?
The goal was never just the fall of a dictator. The goal was, and is, to build a better Sudan, one free from military rule. One with equal opportunities for everyone, with economic prosperity and safety and security - the key principles of freedom, peace, and justice that the revolution called for.
Today, though, before we rebuild Sudan, before we free it from foreign interests and military rule and sectarianism, we need to save it. Each day that passes by with war waging on is one where more civilians are killed. More people are displaced. More women are raped. More children go hungry. To live in the conflict zones in Sudan right now - whether that be Khartoum, Darfur, Kordofan, or now, Al Gezira, is to be trapped in a never-ending nightmare, a fight for survival. And to live elsewhere in Sudan is to wonder whether you're next.
Sudan Action Week calls on you to educate yourself and others about Sudan, and then to help the Sudanese people save it, because we can no longer do it alone.
Tumblr media
Transcript:
What can you do? Uniting for Al Gezira and North Darfur
As we witness the unfolding events in Al Gezira and North Darfur, the communities of Abu Haraz, Hantoub, Medani, El Fasher, and many others are reaching out for assistance. Sudanese resilience persists to this day, with individuals on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok seeking and providing guidance on transportation services, medical care, food, shelter, protection, safe zones, operational markets, and more. This isn't new for the Sudanese community. A legacy of unity emerged, notably during the 2019 revolutions, where nas al Sudan [the people of Sudan], both within the nation and in the diaspora, rallied together to support each other online. Beyond merely sharing stories on social media, this was about strengthening collective action, enhancing mobilizations, and building a resilient community rooted in solidarity. The essence of the Sudanese community lies in people supporting people, notably during the uprising in 2018 and following the events of April 15th, 2023
Swipe to see how you can help.

By: James Esses
Published: Nov 1, 2023
Last weekend, I was privileged to speak at the Battle of Ideas in Westminster, debating some of the biggest issues facing society. Below is a transcript of the opening speech I gave on the ‘Politicisation of Therapy’:
“The entire basis of psychotherapy and counselling is built upon the foundations of empathy, active listening, non-judgement and crucially, treating the client sat opposite you as an individual.
However, over recent years we have witnessed a new breed of therapists take over. I say ‘therapists’ but it would be more accurate to describe them as ‘activists’.
They, through a blend of identity politics and postmodernism, have chipped away at the core, ethical principles of psychotherapy and risk doing harm to the clients they are meant to serve as a result.
I would like to illustrate this through a few examples.
You may have heard the names B.F. Skinner, Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Fritz Perls or Carl Rogers. Considered by many to be the forefathers of psychology and psychotherapy. Although coming at the human condition from different angles, with their respectful modalities often in disagreement with one another, their influence is beyond doubt.
Well, increasingly, I hear of therapists and therapeutic bodies writing both them and their work off, on the basis that they are a bunch of “dead, old, white, men”. I wish I could say I was joking. Some training institutions are even renaming rooms formerly named after these individuals or removing them from the syllabus altogether for that very reason.
This is shocking. If these individuals were influential (which they were) and have something to teach us (which they do), it is utterly irrelevant what their sex was, or their skin colour, or whether they are no longer alive.
These foundational modalities of therapy have instead been replaced with a form of identity politics.
I have spoken to clients whose therapists have chastised them for the way they voted in the Brexit referendum. I have spoken to clients who were essentially told by their therapists that they were ‘privileged’, suggesting maybe they had nothing to complain about. I have spoken to clients whose therapist made a point in the very first session of commenting on their client’s skin colour.
All of this goes against the therapeutic principle of ‘bracketing’, in which therapists should attempt to set aside their own personal beliefs, convictions and judgements when it comes to meeting the client sat opposite them.
We have witnessed this more clearly than anywhere else through the infiltration of gender ideology. Gender dysphoria, the debilitating mismatch between one’s sex and one’s identity is a mental health condition. Yet, it is the only mental health condition that is currently treated by affirming the distressing thoughts inside someone’s head or encouraging them to physically change their body. The treatment for anorexia is not liposuction.
Such unconditional affirmation flies in the face of the notion of exploration – a bedrock of psychotherapy. It turns therapists into nothing more than robotic, nodding dogs, unable to explore or indeed challenge what their client is saying to them.
As we have, unfortunately, come to learn, including through the demise of the now-disgraced Tavistock Clinic, the road to medical transition is paved with significant risk and irreversible harm. More and more young people have been left scarred, physically and emotionally, left infertile or robbed of healthy body parts they can never get back. Many have told me that they wish their therapists had challenged them at the time, rather than affirming them down this slippery slope. The stakes could not be higher.
The battle lines have been clearly drawn. Such ideologically minded-therapists virtue signal their allegiance to the cause to prospective clients, through the placing of pronouns in their online biography or using terms such as “lived experience” or “LGBTQ+”. Those who dare to speak out against this, as I and my group, Thoughtful Therapists have, are branded ‘conversion therapists’, with many being hauled through kangaroo disciplinary processes or excommunicated altogether.
In 2021, I was 3-years into a 5-year masters’ degree in psychotherapy, on the cusp of setting up a private practice. I began to speak out about the infiltration of ideology into therapy, even writing a petition to the government asking them to safeguard explorative therapy for vulnerable children. One Thursday in May, I received an email from my training institution, the Metanoia Institute, telling me I was expelled with immediate effect. The grounds were that I brought them into disrepute. I was provided with no evidence, no policies, no hearing, no appeal. They publicised my expulsion on social media. For daring to speak out in support of biological reality and child safeguarding I was treated, according to their policies, with the same measure they might use against a student who had sexually assaulted a colleague on campus. I’m currently embroiled in litigation against them and the UK Council for Psychotherapy, on the grounds of discrimination.
One final anecdote – I was asked to give a talk to a therapeutic body last year. A large number of the membership were so triggered by my attendance that they tried to get it cancelled and when that didn’t work they set up an emergency “safe space” on site for after I had spoken. Remember, these are the therapists, not the clients. That so many therapists felt unable to have a discussion with me, let alone be physically present in a building at which I was speaking, made me worry about the impact of both their fragility and dogmatic ideological beliefs on their clients.
It appears that, far from alleviating mental distress, as therapists were created to do, the modern breed of therapists are in fact exacerbating it. This should terrify us all.”

Trained Scent Dogs Can Quickly and Accurately Detect Covid-19
Tumblr media
MedicalResearch.com Interview with: Prof. Tommy Dickey Ph.D. Distinguished Professor Emeritus Geography Department University of California Santa Barbara Santa Barbara, CA
Tumblr media
MedicalResearch.com: What is the background for this study? Response:  I became interested in dog's sense of smell several years ago while doing therapy dog demonstrations at the California Science Center in Los Angeles during a special traveling exhibit "Dogs! A Science Tail." (Now at the Orlando Science Center).  I did a lot of research on this topic and taught children about it through the Los Angeles Public Library using my Great Pyrenees therapy dogs. Then, COVID broke out and I expanded my research into any work being done to possibly utilize scent dogs for screening and testing for COVID.  I found only a few such studies.  However, I fortuitously met Heather Junqueira of BioScent, Inc. (in Florida) online and she was beginning to successfully teach her beagles to detect COVID-related odors.  She agreed to co-author a peer-reviewed review paper with me.  That led to our first paper - Dickey, T, Junqueira, H. Toward the use of medical scent dogs for COVID-19 screening. J Osteopath Med 2021;1(2): 141-148. https://doi.org/10.1515/jom-2020-0222 When the COVID pandemic began to wane at the beginning of this year, I felt that it would be the perfect time to do this comprehensive follow-up review to see how far COVID scent dog research had progressed. To our amazement, research efforts had increased by almost tenfold and involved over 400 scientists using over 31,000 samples (including sniffings) from over 30 countries and that 29 peer reviewed papers had been published. Heather’s inspiration for doing scent dog work came when her father contracted cancer and she wanted to find better diagnostics.  She has since been successful in detecting non-small cell lung cancer with her trained beagles as well as COVID. MedicalResearch.com: Would you tell us a little about the type and/or breeding of the dogs? Response:  In the peer-reviewed studies, the number of different breeds and mixed breeds was 19.   Typical training periods dedicated to COVID scent detection were a few weeks. Labrador Retrievers and Belgian Malinois were most commonly used (nearly 100 times). These breeds were chosen because they have been used extensively in scent detection work for several purposes.  Other breeds, such as Heather’s beagles, have been used quite successfully as well. No obvious preference based on performance has been noted by breed, age, gender, age or even previous training for scent work. Interestingly, most of the dogs were not specifically bred to do COVID detection.  In fact, previously untrained dogs have the advantage that they are not as prone to indicating on scents other than the COVID-19 associated scent. Heather is one of the few scientists who actually breeds her dogs to be single purpose scent dogs (i.e., for COVID or other diseases). MedicalResearch.com: What are the main findings? 1)    Our review has shown that it safe to utilize scent dogs to directly screen and test individuals who may be infected with the COVID-19. 2)    The accuracy of the trained scent dog method is comparable to or in some cases superior to the real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test and the antigen (RAG) test. 3)    Trained scent dogs can be effectively used to provide quick (seconds to minutes), non-intrusive, and accurate results in public settings and thus reduce the spread of COVID. MedicalResearch.com: What should readers take away from your report? - Medical scent dogs deserve their place as a serious diagnostic methodology that could be particularly useful during pandemics, potentially as part of rapid health screenings in public spaces. We are confident that scent dogs will be useful in detecting a wide variety of diseases in the future. - We feel that the impressive international COVID scent dog research described in our paper, perhaps for the first time, demonstrates that medical scent dogs are ready for mainstream medical applications.  MedicalResearch.com: What recommendations do you have for future research as a results of this study? 1)    More studies utilizing more dogs would be beneficial 2)    More work in developing target samples is needed 3)    More research is needed in different public settings. MedicalResearch.com: Is there anything else you would like to add? Any disclosures? - More trained dogs will be needed for wide-spread, large-scale scent dog screening and testing.   The training and field use of scent dogs may benefit from the recruitment of dog owners who are already involved in recreational scent work under the auspices of the American Kennel Club and other organizations worldwide. - Is the use of scent dogs cost effective?  Much of the research in this review was in fact motivated by the need for rapid, inexpensive, and lower technological testing in developing nations.  More research into the economics is needed. - Perhaps the greatest challenge to the use of medical scent dogs is the implementation of wide-spread, large-scale programs, which will require funding and development of infrastructure that is responsible for certification, protocol standards, and deployments. This may be more of a challenge in the U.S. for a variety of bureaucratic reasons. Other nations face a variety of obstacles, but the large number of scent dogs already used in practical applications (seen in our paper’s References and Tables) suggests that their governments are quite supportive of the common use of medical scent dogs and may not place as many governmental barriers. Citation: Dickey, Tommy and Junqueira, Heather. "COVID-19 scent dog research highlights and synthesis during the pandemic of December 2019−April 2023" Journal of Osteopathic Medicine, 2023. https://doi.org/10.1515/jom-2023-0104 The information on MedicalResearch.com is provided for educational purposes only, and is in no way intended to diagnose, cure, or treat any medical or other condition. MEDICAL CODING
Medical coding refers to the process of converting medical diagnoses, practises, services, and equipment into standard medical alphanumeric codes. Medical classification systems like the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System are used to derive the diagnoses and procedure codes (HCPCS). This coding procedure aids in the reimbursement of healthcare professionals and insurance firms for the services they render.
Coding is easy in a lot of circumstances. Individual medical coders acquire in-depth knowledge of the practises and patterns used in their particular clinic or hospital. Coders can run upon challenging notes that demand extensive research and require extra time to code appropriately. There are large grey regions that coders might examine, even among the more frequently used codes. Coding standards can be difficult to understand in circumstances that are extremely complex or uncommon. Seasoned coders will rely on their network of peers and industry experts to debate details in online forums, network with specialists they met at national conferences, or consult with coworkers to assist comprehend the problem and choose the appropriate codes.
