hello! i hope you don't mind me asking, but how did you know that medicine was "the one" that you wanted? i'm absolutely clueless on what i want to do, and my parents wanted me to do medicine. ;-;

Hi not at all! So I was in the same position as you at the start. I started exploring medicine on suggestion from my dad (before this I had no clue whatsoever). I knew that I found science pretty cool so I was sort of moving in that general direction. I started watching youtube videos featuring current medical students and I kind of liked the vibe. But the main driving factor for me to seriously start considering medicine was more of a personal journey. This was a mix of growing up with my own health conditions, witnessing family members with chronic health conditions and living in countries with flimsy/almost non-existent healthcare systems.

All of these contributed to me starting the preparation process but what made me decide that medicine was definitely the one would have to be work experience. I did both community and hospital placements; both were instrumental in showing me what things would really be like. There's a LOT of admin in medicine (esp as a junior doc) but I also had the opportunity to witness many interesting, deeply private, heartbreaking and demanding (emotionally and physically) scenarios. Whilst there was no eureka moment for me I really felt like this was an environment where there was real potential for me to thrive.

I would say definitely get some work experience/exposure of some sort(kind of impossible w covid ik)- this is imo the best way to figure out whether this is the profession for you. These days lots of medics from around the world are vlogging their days so check them out- they are more or less accurate (be careful tho! The doctor ones are a little more realistic).

It's also worth thinking seriously about how much work you are prepared to put in- medicine as a course requires a lot of studying/memorising. You can't get away with cramming when it comes to the last few years and at the end of the day your knowledge must be good enough to support and perserve people's lives as much as possible

is medical school super difficult?

umm generally everyone’s gonna tell you it is but it really depends on how you learn and the effort you’re willing to put in. from my experience, i struggled way more with my intercalated degree than with medicine. i also think med students tend to be overachievers and because everyone is so competitive, you do have to invest a lot of time/energy just to be ‘average’.

at the end of the day, the ultimate goal is to be responsible for people’s welfare i.e. their lives, which in itself is no light matter. so yh it’s gotta be hard because your job will be hard :’) 

that said it’s definitely doable (fr if i could get in anyone can) and you honestly do not have to be some genius brain maestro to do medicine. whilst med students are some of the most stressed out ppl ive ever seen, they’re also the most boisterous and self-indulgent lol- you just gotta know when to knuckle down and when to breathe (i still dont know how to do this tbh)

you are studying to be a medic, right? ehm... could you please explain me about tampons? please?

Of course I can, I'm happy you asked this.

So, by this message I can assume that this is your first time with the "tampons experience" so I will be very methodical about how to use it and when you can use it. 

First of all... what is a tampon? Well, like menstrual pads, the tampons help to absorb all the menstrual flow. They are made of soft cotton pressed together to be formed as a bullet, so you can then insert them easily thought your vagina opening. A tampon absorbs your menstrual flow, or blood, before it has a chance to leave the body, that's why the tampons shorten about 1 day of the 5-7 days of the menstrual cycle. Tampons come in all different sizes and absorbencies, so you can choose from a great variety. 

The top one is a tampon with a built-in applicator. For me, this are the most comfortable ones. The plastic applicator helps a lot, and because the cotton is not in contact with your skin it will not make a lot of resistance as the "digital" or "purely cotton" ones (this is because the cotton will absorb the menstrual flow from the entrance and then it will be hard to use, but with the plastic cap this does not happen). 

Now, for applying it. Always, always wash your hands. It's your body and you need to take care of it. So if you are going to change the tampon or even the pad, or for just peeing, wash your hands before. 

Then, if it's your first time, you can be nervous. If you drop the tampon, dispose it and begin with a new one. Relax, because if you are nervous your muscles are too, and they become tight and the opening of your vagina gets smaller, obstructing the way of the tampon.

For doing this you need to be comfortable. Some women prefer to place their leg on the toilet seat, some lay down, but I personally prefer to squat down. After you find a position that is most comfortable for you, hold the tampon with the fingers that you write with. Hold the middle of the tampon, at the spot where the smaller, inner tube inserts into the larger, outer tube. Make sure the string is visible and pointing away from your body.

With your other hand, open the labia (the folds of skin around the vaginal opening), I mean, open your vagina girl. Common sense built up here. Then, push the tampon (with the cap) into the opening of your vagina aiming to the back. Stop when your fingers touch your body, and the plastic applicator (the big cap)

When the applicator or outer tube is inside your vagina, use your index finger or your thumb, to push the inner tube (the tube where the removal string is visible) through the outer tube. This pushes the tampon into the vagina.

Once the inner tube is all the way in, use your thumb and middle finger to remove the applicator or outer tube. Make sure that the string hangs outside of your vaginal opening. 

Then, I highly recommend the use of a small pad (that ones that are really thin) for "little drop coverage".

So after two hours, go to the bathroom and try to pull softly the sting, it if gets out easily, you need to remove it. But if it applies resistance, leave it.

You can leave the tampon inside to maximum 4 hours (some say 6 hours, but I recommend just 4 because of the Toxic Shock Syndrome), except when it's over the night, when you can introduce, and when you wake up pull it off. (But, I recommend to avoid using it at night)

Alternate the use of tampons with pads.  

PS: If the tampon feels uncomfortable, it may not be inserted properly. Try to move a little, sit and stand up. open  your legs a bit  and squat. If it's still uncomfortable, take it out and use a new one. With time, comes experience, and with experience you may master the use of tampons.

PS2: And don't worry about the tampon getting completely in. Your uterus opening is really small and the cotton of the tampon is bigger than the opening. 

So then, you may be thinking, what is Toxic Shock Syndrome? Well it's a rare but potentially dangerous infection. TSS can affect anyone, male or female. However, it occurs most frequently in young women who wear tampons (mmm, we girls, we need to take care of ourselves).

Tampons themselves do not cause TSS. TSS is caused by bacteria called Staphylococcus aureus. When a tampon is left inside your vagina for too long (this is why I say only 4 hours), it creates a perfect environment for different types of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, to grow.

The Staphylococcus aureus is common to be found in your skin and nose of healthy people. And it's known to be one of the common causes of skin infections in the U.S. 

I'm virgin, can I use Tampons? Yes, you can. Do I recommend it? Not really. You can ignore my recommendation? totally.

The hymen (the thin layer that determines your virginity) is really elastic. So elastic, the menstrual flow can get out of your system. And a tampon can get in. But, in some cases, the hymen is not so elastic, or you vagina opening is too small for the tampon, and the hymen breaks up. So if you can live with only pads. GO USE ONLY PADS. If you can play a Russian Roulette with your virginity USE YOUR ALWAYS FRIENDLY TAMPONS. 

Oh Lord this is too long. But then I wanted to make a complete guide.
