Happy Medal Monday! Well that was a fun one day, no sleep in 40 hours getaway to run the 'Summer's Last Bash at the Beach 5K'. I've rarely traveled to run only a 5k, but it was at the beach. I've been wanting to go to any beach for a long long time and when I saw this one posted a couple weeks ago, I said SOLD! Plus, Rockaway was a part of New York City that I hadn't visited before (and there are many others still). So there you have it, medal #2 of the Covid-19 era. Happy Virtual Medal Monday! The Gauntlet 30k Challenge medal was so cool when I saw it, that I had to have it. It's a special tribute to the Avengers Infinity Saga hero, Iron Man. The Infinity Stones (little magnets can be removed. The challenge consisted of six 5ks (one stone earned per 5k) or any combination of runs to get to 30k. I used the LA Marathon as my combination set. Happy Late Medal Monday! The plaque is from #USATF in certification that I earned the Gold Phidippides Award for Outstanding Performance and Endurance in Long Distance Running. This is my third one. This honor is named after the first man that ran a marathon in Greece. He didn't run a race, but ran as a messenger during an impending war. Most believe he died from running the marathon distance. That's partially true. Phidippides ran several marathon's back to back, which led to his demise. Purportedly he was in excellent shape, but that much running without aid stations along your route will take anyone down. I'll add this to my long awaited 2019 year of running review and medals display that is finally underway. Happy Medal Monday! My last medal of 2019. I ran the virtual race of the #TedCorbitt15k on December 13. The race was held in Central Park, New York on December 7, prior to my return from Spain. Knowing that I wouldn't be back in time, I signed up for the Limited Edition medal honoring the 100th birthday of this pioneer of the ultramarathon. Ironically, it arrived in the mail today. Valencia Marathon RECAP and Medal Monday (abbreviated) Where to begin with this escapade gone wrong... The morning of: Certain circumstances didn't help with rest or time for this race, but perhaps more on that later. My Airbnb was only 2 miles from the race, but I opted for the Metro. That wouldn't have been so bad except for the fact that I ended up on the wrong side of the course to access the cloakroom (bag check). Had to run away from the course to access a bridge to get across. One guard wouldn't let me in the start area, so I went to another who opened the gate for me. As I approached the start timing mat, I realized that it's being disconnected! I charged through hoping it registered. At this point I know I'm the last to start this race, but no worries because I'll catch the back of the pack runners.. The crowd support was amazing and the music throughout almost every mile was just wow! This helped me to relax and realize I should just enjoy the run. Especially after my hip flared up. This time it happened in mile twelve. Then the domino effect started. Left quads/hamstrings started crying. Slowed my pace to avoid making it worse. Now time for the inevitable, start stretching. Into the finishers chute we go. Turn here, turn there. The crowd is screaming! I envisioned videotaping the final stretch but opted out because I just wanted to finish. And then, all of a sudden a guard motioned for a young woman directly in front of me to turn right and off the course. She was videotaping with her cell phone. Are we not supposed to record this area? Darting to the finish line, I maneuver around a group out in front. I veered left and my shoe grabbed the rubber paving and I fell just about 40 feet in front of the finish line. I couldn't break the fall and skidded. The last segment of the finishing zone, parallel to the reflecting pool, is paved in rubber. That hurt. Anxious to get out of the limelight, I jumped up and crossed the finish line. How embarrassing. I'm glad I got to experience it. 2019 TCS NYC Marathon RECAP & Medal Monday (Photo group 1 of 3) And that's it, The Big Apple has been bitten. I think it should be called, The Big Rollercoaster. When people say, 'Earned and not given', it totally applies to this race. Mind you I handled all of the bridges soundly. The Verrazanno Bridge wasn't as windy as I was expecting. Waiting in the race villages was where the chill of the wind challenges you if you're inactive. The long as hell gradual climb north through Brooklyn took a few people down. Some people had to walk the bridges with a crawling death march up the inclines. Since I know I have one more marathon and a half left for 2019, I decided to make this an enjoyable run instead of a race for pace. Miss New York was having none of that. You will still work for your fun from beginning to end. NYRR says, "It will inspire you" "It will motivate you" "It will move you". They forgot about the "It will work you!" part. All and all, this is an exciting race because of the amazing crowd support, the music and some outstanding views from the bridges. We even had perfect running weather. Would I do it again? Sure if someone was paying my way. That registration fee is a bit over the top! In a separate post I'll cover the rest of this long weekend in NYC in relation to meeting some of my heroes and sheroes on Facebook. The finish area is always comical. Most people are walking zombies that were in my way as I zipped through past them to get my poncho. This was marathon #11. Being that I Iove NYC, it is only fitting to, ironically, dedicate this race to the never to be forgotten Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. It's survivors and those that were lost as well. Yay! It's Medal Monday! My adrenaline is so high that I could run the marathon again tomorrow (Not! 😂). Also, if you've never run Detroit, this is one to add to your bucket list. The thrill of running across the bridge to Canada and back through the tunnel is amazing! In my farewell as a 2019 race ambassador, to receive this medal, my one second marathon PR and the new friends I gained from working with my fellow ambassadors, I'd have to use just one word: PRICELESS! 2019 continues to be a year that'll be hard to top. It's Medal Monday! If you love a great trail race, then this one's for you. My hip didn't let me be great this year, but all the same I finished and collected my medal. This was the twelfth running of this event and my fourth appearance. It must be worth the effort to keep coming back for more. I know it just can't be the race director's charm lol You'll like him if you can manage his dry humor. I highly recommend this big race with a small town feel. I'm sure you will too. The post race party is great also, with local vendor stations and even a massage tent. Register early and get a super stupid discount.
