So I enjoy watching the Girl With the Dog videos and was quite happy to see a shar pei puppy. Vanessa spoke of various details regarding shar pei, including coat types. There are three different coat types: horse, brush, and bear. However, the bear coat type is not an accepted coat type, and so she warned that, if you're looking into getting a shar pei puppy and the breeder is 'specializing' in bear coat shar pei, you need to be cautious.

Naturally, someone with a pair of bear coat shar pei took offense to this and tried scolding Vanessa, saying her dogs are perfectly healthy, etc.

This woman's specific dogs are not the problem and her taking Vanessa's warning personally was quite foolish.

There has been a lot of negligent breeding in the past 50 years and, because of the excess wrinkles, they can have a lot of skin problems--entropion, surgeries just so puppies can see, bacteria, etc (plus, there are studies linking Shar Pei Fever to either the skin or "meatmouth" muzzle, so always make sure your breeder has tested their dogs for the potential). The brush coat example from above is an example of a good visual example of bad breeding in the extreme wrinkling good breeders should avoid and I wouldn't be surprised if it needed surgery in the past or future. The bear coat is a recessive gene and intentionally trying to breed for a recessive genetic trait is risky business--just look at double merle coats in Australian shepherds. To be frank, I personally feel like we need to return to the bonemouth variation of the shar pei (I am biased because my shar pei mix looks extremely similar to the bonemouth and she is, unbiased, a beautiful dog and frequently gets comments and compliments). They are slightly taller and are probably generally healthier, but I personally haven't found much documentation regarding the issue. They grow into their skin and become very beautiful and striking dogs.

Honestly, if you specifically want a bear coat shar pei, just get a Chow Chow. They're extremely similar in size, appearance, and general temperament, likely having the same origin point.

The shar pei should be "retro" bred. The characteristic wrinkles everyone thinks of are really a newer addition to the breed when Hong Kong breeders were appealing to western countries to save them from extinction because of the Chinese Communist Party. The wrinkles not only collect bacteria (just like with other wrinkly faced dogs), but it's not uncommon for shar pei puppies to need surgery just to be able to open their eyes because of them.

You can see the older version of the shar pei still has loose skin, but it's not so overwhelming. (This is a pretty mild modern shar pei.) Plus, it has longer legs. Some breeders in Hong Kong still breed the "traditional" version and they're called "bonemouth" shar pei. The western version is the "meatmouth". Bonemouths are also sportier and more athletic. (I also think they're more aesthetically pleasing. Meatmouths usually just look swollen to me.)

There are a few different mixes that can bring back the bonemouth look and athleticism. My shar pei/husky mix for example:

If I became wealthy, one thing I would love to do is to contribute to the preservation of bonemouth shar pei.

I find it to be so much more striking and beautiful than the more common meatmouth. Also, it seems to be more healthy and I have seen it said that it's more athletic than the meatmouth, especially when you put them right next to each other.

There's some charming forehead crinkles and some loose skin in the neck, but the eyes are clear and there's no overwhelming bacteria traps.

It's just such a beautiful dog. My shar pei mix looks very similar to the bonemouth (double-coated and her tongue isn't all blue/black though) and she receives so many compliments on her appearance.

I think it's such a shame that there are so few of this type left! I believe I've seen the number 200 back in 2022 from a Chinese club? Hopefully, the numbers can grow in the future!
