Bonemouth shar pei should be more popular rather than the more commonly known meatmouth shar pei.

Beautiful dogs that cut a striking figure! Plus they don't have the wrinkles that are bacterial traps and can harm their eyes nor that swollen looking muzzle. They're also a little taller as well as being more athletic. Possibly healthier in general? But I haven't come across more research going into the health of the dedicated Hong Kong breeders keeping them alive vs the more widely available meatmouth.

From what I've read, the more wrinkled meatmouth variety was made by crossbreeding pugs and bulldogs which is probably also why they're considered a brachycephalic breed despite having an actual face.

The masonic meatmouths believe--and this is direct, i heard it from an old white man very recently--that eating things that are evolutionarily close to you is believed to be superior and more beneficial to your own health.

The shar pei should be "retro" bred. The characteristic wrinkles everyone thinks of are really a newer addition to the breed when Hong Kong breeders were appealing to western countries to save them from extinction because of the Chinese Communist Party. The wrinkles not only collect bacteria (just like with other wrinkly faced dogs), but it's not uncommon for shar pei puppies to need surgery just to be able to open their eyes because of them.

Here's a side by side comparison:

You can see the older version of the shar pei still has loose skin, but it's not so overwhelming. (This is a pretty mild modern shar pei.) Plus, it has longer legs. Some breeders in Hong Kong still breed the "traditional" version and they're called "bonemouth" shar pei. The western version is the "meatmouth". Bonemouths are also sportier and more athletic. (I also think they're more aesthetically pleasing. Meatmouths usually just look swollen to me.)

There are a few different mixes that can bring back the bonemouth look and athleticism. My shar pei/husky mix for example:

So I mentioned a while back how I splurged and got a dog DNA test kit?

I got the results and--WHAT? SIBERIAN HUSKY WITHA STEEL CHAIR?!

This does make certain things make sense, like why she enjoys the cold and snow so much, as well as why she has such a tendency to pull and loves hiking. Like, yeah, bonemouth shar pei are much more active than the meatmouth variety, but I figured it was unlikely she was just straight bonemouth because of how uncommon they are in the west.

Thankfully as an apartment dweller who gets home late at night, she has the vocal tendency of her shar pei parent and not the husky.

This is very interesting to see how genetics are a grab bag (like how the percentage isn't just 50/50)... Also makes a great case for the husky as a viable option to bring back the bonemouth as other shar pei mixes in the "dogs like mine" look similarly.
