So I mentioned a while back how I splurged and got a dog DNA test kit?

I got the results and--WHAT? SIBERIAN HUSKY WITHA STEEL CHAIR?!

This does make certain things make sense, like why she enjoys the cold and snow so much, as well as why she has such a tendency to pull and loves hiking. Like, yeah, bonemouth shar pei are much more active than the meatmouth variety, but I figured it was unlikely she was just straight bonemouth because of how uncommon they are in the west.

Thankfully as an apartment dweller who gets home late at night, she has the vocal tendency of her shar pei parent and not the husky.

This is very interesting to see how genetics are a grab bag (like how the percentage isn't just 50/50)... Also makes a great case for the husky as a viable option to bring back the bonemouth as other shar pei mixes in the "dogs like mine" look similarly.

The shar pei should be "retro" bred. The characteristic wrinkles everyone thinks of are really a newer addition to the breed when Hong Kong breeders were appealing to western countries to save them from extinction because of the Chinese Communist Party. The wrinkles not only collect bacteria (just like with other wrinkly faced dogs), but it's not uncommon for shar pei puppies to need surgery just to be able to open their eyes because of them.

Here's a side by side comparison:

You can see the older version of the shar pei still has loose skin, but it's not so overwhelming. (This is a pretty mild modern shar pei.) Plus, it has longer legs. Some breeders in Hong Kong still breed the "traditional" version and they're called "bonemouth" shar pei. The western version is the "meatmouth". Bonemouths are also sportier and more athletic. (I also think they're more aesthetically pleasing. Meatmouths usually just look swollen to me.)

There are a few different mixes that can bring back the bonemouth look and athleticism. My shar pei/husky mix for example:

If I became wealthy, one thing I would love to do is to contribute to the preservation of bonemouth shar pei.

I find it to be so much more striking and beautiful than the more common meatmouth. Also, it seems to be more healthy and I have seen it said that it's more athletic than the meatmouth, especially when you put them right next to each other.

There's some charming forehead crinkles and some loose skin in the neck, but the eyes are clear and there's no overwhelming bacteria traps.

It's just such a beautiful dog. My shar pei mix looks very similar to the bonemouth (double-coated and her tongue isn't all blue/black though) and she receives so many compliments on her appearance.

I think it's such a shame that there are so few of this type left! I believe I've seen the number 200 back in 2022 from a Chinese club? Hopefully, the numbers can grow in the future!
