There are of course lots of indirect and digital ways to express affection but I'm very obsessed with the idea that glados physically and literally can feel things (namely because of the "i know you're there, I can feel you here" line). Unfortunately this also means she is likely capable of experiencing physical pain
#portal#glados#and the reactions to said pain are not always proportionate#if you step on one of her wires she will wail and act like a dying animal#or perhaps a cat whose paw was stepped on and now is giving you the cold shoulder for the next hour#meanwhile when hit with a rocket all she does is go 'ow!'#she may be the most massive collection of wisdom that's ever existed#but she is the most massive whiny baby that has ever existed

WARNING: LANGUAGE]
——————————————————————————-
The sun was slowly started to rise as half of Boston started to get up, to get to their occupations. But in the wealthier part of Boston, two specific doctors were still in bed, curled up into each other and enjoyed each other’s warmth. Well, that was the case approximately thirty-two seconds ago. Ethan Ramsey’s alarm went off, reminding him of his day forward. He let out a sigh before acknowledging the weigh on top of him. His eyes traveled lower, to the woman on top, and asleep, of him. For a moment, Ethan considered staying five more minutes. But of course, he wouldn’t. He has a busy schedule, so does Leila. He was surprised that Leila didn’t wake up at the sound of the alarm going off, considering she’s a very, very light sleeper. She would normally jolt up to any clear sound but considering that Ethan fucked her until three this morning (only two hours ago), she was awfully tired. Ethan’s mind suddenly reminded him of the angry sex they had for hours and hours, non-stop.
Starting at ten, and finishing at three. Started on the kitchen table, then the bedroom, then the bath, then the bedroom again, and then the shower. Actually, it started with the heated argument they had. And what was the cause of the argument? Harper Emery. Leila had never, in her life, hated someone so much. And the fact that Harper was actually a really nice person, made it worse. Earlier that day, Leila saw the two doctors, casual talking of work and the hospital’s financial situation.
Harper was the main reason the two doctors couldn’t be together, well, in Leila’s eyes, she was. It was like whenever the two got a chance to be Leila and Ethan (not Dr. Salvator and Dr. Ramsey), she would somehow ruin it. Leila is well aware of the fling that she and Ethan had, and honestly? It just made it worse for her. She saw the one time that Harper went to him, talked to him, then kissed him on the cheek, but that was in her intern year. So much has changed since then. And Leila couldn't help herself. So she decided to go confront him, after her shift, at his apartment. When she got there, no ‘hello’ or ‘ how are you?’ she just walked in after he opened his door and asked him about his and Harper’s relationship.
It didn’t go so well. She ended up not believing him when he claimed that there was nothing going on between them. Until one of them made a move. Although they’re not sure who kissed who first. And boom! Angry sex for five hours straight. As cocky as Leila is, she knows that Ethan is extremely dominant and controlling when he’s angry. So she’d be lying if she said that those five hours weren’t the best five hours of her life. Actually, sex with Ethan was always amazing, great, even spectacular. But last night was a whole new level.
He had been rough with her. He doesn’t know it, but he showed her stuff she didn’t even know she could do. So by the time they were done, Leila was extremely sensitive, overwhelmed, exhausted and overstimulated. But oh, she loved it. She loved it when he was rough with her. It felt as if he was marking his territory. He was so rough, that she now has bruises all over her body. Especially her hips. His fingerprints were marked in her skin, surrounded by red and purple. As amazing as their night was, Leila did not realize that she was going to be sore as fuck.
When Ethan finally decided to get up, he had to gently untangle Leila from his body. After he did that, he slowly rolled Leila off of him. The moment Leila hit the mattress, on her stomach, she let out a yelp of pain, still asleep. Ethan’s head snapped up as soon as he realized what it was. Leila was on her stomach, still sleeping, while her eyebrows were knitted together as if she was pain. Ethan’s doctor senses kicked in immediately. He slowly sat up, on his kind sized bed, and yanked the sheets of off Leila’s body. His eyes widened to the sight of her. She was only in her panties, so the rest of her body was exposed. Ethan slowly raised a hand to the bruises on her lower part, her hips and her lower ribs. They were purple and it looked like they hurt like hell.
Ethan was shocked. A million questions flew through his mind. Did he really do this to her? How could he? Although they told each other that they would only have a professional relationship after Ethan ended it multiple times, not one of them could honestly stay away. Month one on the diagnostic team was difficult for them both, considering they had to end everything they had. Month two on the diagnostic team, Leila started having dreams, where Ethan would through out fuck her and she’d wake up wet and wanting. Month three on the diagnostic team, Ethan started having dreams about her, then the next day, he wouldn't even be able to look her in the eyes. And now, month four... They both popped, couldn't keep it in anymore. So this is where we are now.
Ethan Jonah Ramsey does not work with emotions. He barely shows his emotions. He didn’t want anything more than a professional relationship with Leila, because he knew that in one way or another, he was going to hurt her or he was going to affect her career. He never ever wanted Leila to get hurt. He cared very deeply about her, though of course, he wouldn't tell her that. They had been through a lot. And now that she’s in her second year, on his diagnostic team, things were even more complicated. And now look what he’s done. He didn’t hurt her in an emotional way, but even worse. A physical way. With his own hands.
He sat on the bed staring at her with no expression on his face. But if Leila were to look in those beautiful, piercing blue eyes, she would immediately know that he was busy asking himself a bunch of questions. Ethan decided to finally get up and go shower. Sure he was your typical stone-cold bitch, but this time, it was different. Leila and Ethan’s relationship was... complicated. Very, very complicated. Once he got into the shower, he felt the hot water bounce of his shoulders and run down the rest of his body.
Meanwhile, Leila started to become aware of the bed she was in. She could hear the shower water running, and it slightly woke her up. But the thing that actually woke her up, was the ringing of her phone. She groaned, it was like she could hear her phone vibrating through her brain. She was planning on rolling over, but the moment she moved her body, she felt pain. She closed her eyes and groaned in frustration. Before she knew it, her arm shot out to the nightstand beside her and she grabbed her phone. She brought the device close to her face then lazily opened her eyes, only to see Sienna calling her.
Her finger grazed the button, “Hmm?” She asked, voice thick with sleep. “Leila! Where are you? You never came home last night. We were worried sick,” poor Sienna sounded like she just lost her own damn child. “Sienna, relax. I’m fine. Can we talk about this later? Okay, thanks, love you, bye,” Leila said, only giving Sienna time to reply with, “No! Wait I-” And then Laila hanged up. She knew Sienna would understand, that that’s just how Leila is, hopefully. Leila forced herself to sit up straight, her legs dangling off of the side of Ethan’s massive bed. She slowly rolled back her shoulders, wincing in pain. Her head lazily turned to the bathroom door, where Ethan was in his massive shower, obviously showering.
Leila debated with herself whether she wanted more sex or not, as the memories came flooding back into her brain of what they had done just two hours ago. Should she go join him or should she leave? And if she joined him, would that lead to more sex or an awkward silence? No, she didn't know. She tried to stand up, but just as she did, she felt pain shoot through her body like a rocket. “Ow!” Leila yelped as she sat back down onto the bed. Her headshot to the bathroom door, hoping Ethan didn't hear that. She slowly started to get up again, now fully aware of her body’s bruises and where they hurt most. Once she was up, clutching the bed tightly so that she wouldn't fall, she scanned the room for her clothes. Once she couldn't see her clothes in her boss's room, she remembered that they were in the kitchen, where they had started.
Leila spotted one of Ethan’s shirts in a puddle next to her left foot. She slowly bent down to get it, careful not to hurt herself. Once she got it, she threw it over herself. Leila hugged herself, enchanted by the soft material and the smell of Ethan against her body. She grabbed her phone when she heard the water stopped running. “Oh, fuck me,” she whispered in annoyance as she slowly started to feel her legs again. Leila quickly started wobbling out of Ethan’s luxuriously massive room and straight into his even more luxuriously massive kitchen. As soon as she closed the door that connected the room and the kitchen, Jenner spotted her. He jumped off of the couch and ran to Leila’s bare legs, sniffing up and down her long legs. “Jenner!” Leila whispered and took his face in her hands.
Leila spotted their clothes scattered around the kitchen. She slowly let go of Jenner and moved around the kitchen counter then picked up her scattered clothing pieces. She eventually picked up her bra and looked at the cups. “Jenner, why do I even wear bras if I don't even have boobs?” She asked the dog. Just as Leila scrambled all of her cheap clothes together, she heard heavy footsteps approaching her and the door flew open. “...Rookie,” Ethan said in a flat tone of voice, coming from behind her. He sounded as if he was annoyed. This made Leila angry, annoyed and confused. Two can play at that game, she thought. “I’m not a rookie anymore, Ethan. You ought to know that,” She shot back. Ethan completely ignored her bitchiness all together, which annoyed the living shit out of Leila.
“How are you feeling?” Ethan asked, but the tone of his voice made it sound like he didn't really care and Leila noticed it immediately. When she finally decided to turn around and face him so that she could answer while looking in his eyes, her breath got caught in her throat. He was wearing his usual doctor outfit, but damn. Ethan Jonah Ramsey looked good in anything, everything and nothing. “Do you actually care or are you just trying to make small talk?” The venom in Leila’s voice slightly caught him guard but he refused to let it show. Leila was still absolutely pissed about the situation. She remembered him telling her off last night by simply saying: Don't talk to me like that. The memory made her blood boil. She could talk to him however she pleased. Lucky for Leila, Ethan just happened to have a soft spot for her, so yes, she had the luxury of talking to him however she wanted and she could get away with it. Just like the time she lost her shit, again, and called him a goddamn diva, spoiled child and entitled jackass in one day, in front of June and Baz and she got away with it.
“When do I ever make small talk?” He asked, eyes shooting daggers, “Now I ask again, are you alright?” Leila’s gaze slightly softened when she realized that he actually cared. But it didn't change the fact that she was still completely pissed. “Except for the fact that I can't walk because of you, I’m sure I’ll survive,” Leila replied, slowly letting down her guard, knowing deep down that she’ll always give in to him. Jenner was currently sitting on the floor, looking back and forth at them. Ethan didn't say anything else after that, simply walking past her and into the kitchen, getting a glass cup and filling it with water. After that, he went to the medicine cupboard and getting a pill. Leila’s eyes were fixed on his form, taking in everything he was doing. Once he had a pill and water, he put it on the kitchen table in front of her. “Drink,” was all he said. Leila eyed him suspiciously, not knowing what pill it is. “No,” Leila said, crossing her arms over her chest and just getting more comfortable in his clothes. Before he could say anything, Leila interrupted his thoughts by asking why.
“Well, I don't suppose you’re on birth control, so drink,” He said as he was making himself a coffee. “So you’re giving me a morning after pill,” She thought out loud. Leila was in fact, not on birth control, though she had no idea how Ethan knew. Ethan did not reply as he simply sipped on his coffee, eyeing her every move, unsure what she was going to do next. God, she was a complicated woman, truly a mystery to him. Her small figure stayed in a stubborn position, not moving as she looked at the pill then back up to him, “And if I refuse to take it?” Leila smirked at him when he raised an eyebrow, almost choking on his coffee. “That depends. Do you want to be pregnant? And have a child with a goddamn diva?” He asked, sarcasm dripping from his voice, his eyes cold and serious. Leila let out a half hearted laugh. “Maybe I do,” Leila whispered under her breath, hoping he hadn't heard, but at the same time, hoping that he did hear her. Just to spite him, she decided to not drink the pill, buy her own later and drink that one. “No,” She simply said slowly walking to the door, legs still sore from their pervious intercourse. Ethan’s eyes slightly widened in shock. “I’ll buy my own later,” She said as she locked to door open.
“You are going to forget,” Ethan spat back, knowing just how messy and quite forgettable she is. “And you can’t go out like that. You are literally wearing my shirt and your underwear, not to mention you’ll be walking down the hall with your bra in your hands,” He said, putting his coffee down, and walking towards her. “So?” She simply asked, halfway out of the door. “And, you can't even walk properly,” He stated, seeing just how she was wobbling. She let out a sigh and stopped, basically standing in the hallway that lead to his penthouse. In front of him, she dropped all her clothing and her phone that was in her arms, except for her jeans. She turned around, backside facing him, and bent down, slowly pulling her jeans over her feet and slid them up her long legs, giving him the best view of her ass. His eyes glued to her body. She smirked when she heard him let out a groan. She turned and faced him, picking up her gadgets ever slowly, causing his big shirt to hang forward, giving him an even better view of her breasts. “Rookie, don't...” He groaned. “Not a rookie anymore, Doctor Ramsey,” she said, smirking, as she started walking down the hall towards the elevator.
She smiled when she heard him close the door of his apartment, with a loud thud. In all honesty, Leila already forgot about the morning after pill. Who knows, maybe in a couple of months there’ll be a mini goddamn diva running up and down the very hall in which Leila was currently walking in.

The mysterious agents strike against the Battalion. Previous! Next!

Government of Doom Part 3
Devi sits in front of her computer, grumbling agonizingly as she struggles with a design interface. She very carefully tries to paste a scan of one of her paintings onto the document, but when she does, the picture takes up the whole page.
“Fuck,” she grunts, “who would’ve thought being a freelance painter meant having to use computers so much.” Her work is interrupted when the door flies open and Dib, Pepito, and Squee burst in.
“Devi!” Squee exclaims.
“Squee?” she questions as she gets up from her desk. “What’s going on?”
“You okay?” he asks, “you haven’t seen anything weird? Nobody strange has approached you or anything?”
“No,” she replies with confusion. “I haven’t even left my computer all day. Making my own business card is really hard.”
“Oh, I could help you with that,” Dib says, “I’ve dabbled in web design.”
“Now’s not the time, Dib,” Pepito points out.
“Right, sorry.”
“What’s going on?” Devi asks again.
“We’re not really sure yet,” Squee replies, “we had to be sure nobody was in any immediate danger. Nny should be dealing with that right now.”
“We should regroup back at Zim’s and figure out who these guys are and what they want,” Dib says.
“Yeah,” he agrees, “I’ll get Tenna and we’ll meet you guys at the Epic.”
Squee splits off and heads down the hall while Dib and Pepito go the opposite way, Devi following somewhat confused.
Squee hurries through the halls to Tenna’s apartment. But just before he can burst through the door, a chill runs up his spine and he freezes, his hand hovering over the knob.
“Something’s happened,” Shmee warns.
Squee remains frozen for a second longer before steeling his nerves and throwing open the door.
The first thing he sees are two men dressed like the agents they captured. And one of them is holding unconscious Tenna under his arm.
They both look at Squee, surprised, as he glares angrily at them. Before either of them can react, he reaches into his bag, pulls out a Flashy Bomb, and tosses it into the room. He ducks around the corner as it goes off, and the agents cry out in pain from the bright light.
As they struggle to gather themselves, Squee races in. He spots Tenna on the floor where the agent dropped her and drapes her arm around his neck, lifting her up.
“I got you, Ten,” he whispers as he activates his rocket wheelies. He zips backwards out of the room and runs normally down the hall as he struggles to carry Tenna and type on his phone. He sends a single message in the group chat: Danger!
“Squee!” Shmee shouts.
Squee turns around at the last second, just as something pierces his shoulder. His phone and Tenna slip from his arms as his body gets suddenly limp. As he falls up against the wall, he pulls a dart out of his shoulder and glares at a third agent approaching from the down the hall, a gun in his hand.
Squee’s vision quickly grows cloudy and he collapses to the floor next to Tenna.
Meanwhile, Dib, Pepito, and Devi are waiting in the parking lot by the Epic. Pepito and Devi lean against the vehicle while Dib paces around.
“What’s taking Johnny so long?” he questions.
“Johnny’s here too?” Devi asks.
“He was gonna deal with the two agents that were watching you and Tenna,” Dib explains, “I figured he’d be done by now.”
“Squee’s taking a while too,” Pepito adds as he watches the door to the building.
Just then they receive a message in the group chat. After checking their phones, Dib and Pepito blanch.
“Get in the car now!” Dib orders.
“But what about Squee?” Pepito points out.
“What’s going on?” Devi asks.
“If he wanted help he would’ve said so,” Dib argues, ignoring her. “He sent that message so that we would get away.” “What message?” Devi asks impatiently. “What’s going on?” “Just get in the ca-!” Dib’s cut off when a dart is suddenly fired into his back. His body jolts as he chokes on his words before going completely limp and collapsing in a heap.
“Dib!” Pepito and Devi cry.
His eyes looking around frantically, Pepito shoves Devi to her knees behind the cover of the surrounding vehicles.
“Get in the car, Devi,” he orders. She quickly obeys and crawls into the backseat.
A dart flies for Pepito. With inhuman speed, he catches it and it burns up in black flames.
“Gotcha,” he snarls and throws off his leather coat. His wings burst out of his back, through the open space of his newly designed tank top, and he takes off. He flies in the direction from where the dart came and spots one of those agents ducked behind a vehicle on the other side of parking lot, holding a sniper rifle.
The agent aims at Pepito and fires. He swats the dart, utterly destroying it, and dive bombs towards him. The agent stands strong, gun raised, as Pepito rapidly approaches.
Before he can attack, something splashes into Pepito from the right and his whole body burns up. He hits the ground immediately, writhing in pain, as steam rises from the clear liquid covering his body.
“Holy water,” he snarls through gritted teeth and glares up at a second agent holding a large super soaker. The first agent approaches, drawing a pistol, and aims at Pepito. He can only lie there, in pain, as a knock-out dart is fired into his chest.
“Nice shot,” the first agent comments to the second as he lowers his super soaker. They both look up at the door as the three inside the building exit, carrying Tenna and Squee who are both unconscious.
“What happened to you?” the second agent asks two of them, who have very red, wet eyes.
“Don’t ask,” one of them grumbles.
“We’ve got one left in this area,” the first agent says, “she’s in that pink car.”
“I’ll get her,” the third agent grunts and approaches the car. But when he peeks in the windows, he finds it empty.
“We’ve got a runner,” he announces into his radio.
Devi is indeed running. She slipped out the other side of the Epic and through the parking lot while the agents were busy with Pepito. Now she’s booking it down the street, wondering just what the fuck she does now.
When she can’t run anymore, she ducks into an alley, panting as she leans against the wall. Johnny was supposed to be nearby. Where is he?
She hears a vehicle coming down the road and presses up flatter against the wall. A black, windowless van passes by but quickly stops just a few feet away.
“Fuck,” Devi hisses and races down the alley. She tries to jump the fence at the end, clambering over the top, when something pierces her lower back.
Her whole body going limp, Devi slips off the fence and back onto the dirt. Her vision quickly fades as she sees two of the agents standing over her before she passes out.
Meanwhile, across the city, Zim and Tak with Gaz have quickly arrived to the Membrane house, only to find it devoid of spies. They look around the entire the block and scan it with Tak’s cybernetic eye but find nothing suspicious.
“Why would they leave?” Tak asks.
“Maybe cause Dib and I were gone,” Gaz suggests.
“That is sloppy spying,” Zim scoffs and grabs his phone. He starts to send a message in the group chat when a message from Squee beats him to it. Gaz and Tak grab their phones to read it too.
Danger!
“Back to the base now!” Zim orders as his spider legs come out. Tak does the same and Gaz holds onto her before they take off. They hurry through the streets back to Zim’s house and just make it to the yard when something pierces Gaz’s side.
“Ow!” she cries out and looks down at a dart before her body starts getting weak.
“Gaz!” Tak exclaims as she slips from her spider legs. Tak drops to the ground and barely manages to catch the now unconscious Gaz.
Zim skids to a stop and turns back to the girls as Tak scans the surrounding area with her cybernetic eye. She spots multiple people hiding on the roofs of the buildings all around them.
“Zim, we’re surrounded!” she exclaims and lifts her robot hand to begin blasting the roofs to the right. Zim draws his laser guns and does the same to the roofs on the left. They immediately hear people crying out as they scramble to not get hit.
Something flies at Tak from the shadows. Whatever it is, her spider legs smack it away and she blasts the area where it came from. But another flies at her from the opposite direction, attaching itself to one of her spider legs. She sees it’s some kind of metal device before it sends a horrible electric shock through her body.
“Tak!” Zim exclaims as she cries out and collapses. A similar device flies at him. Zim blasts it to pieces with his gun. Another one from the back. His spider leg stabs it.
Zim barely fends off the flying devices as he backs up to the base, feeling cornered. He has no idea what’s happened to the rest of his team and without Tak’s eye, he can’t tell where his enemies are. Just that he’s outnumbered.
He pants as he steps into his yard and glares at his hidden opponents. Then he takes a deep breath and shouts, “Computer! Activate lockdown!”
Immediately, the house gets covered in impenetrable metal plating with no point of entry and Zim smirks. “You won’t be getting Zim’s secrets.”
A device flies at him along the ground and hits his boot. Immediately, he convulses as the shock travels through his body. He collapses, his guns slipping from his hands and his spider legs going limp. He sees more of those agents come out of the shadows as his visions fades. He can only hope one of his team managed to make it out.
Across the city, on the roof of Devi and Tenna’s apartment building, two agents are backpedaling fearfully, their dart guns raised.
“H-hit him again!” one of them orders.
“We’ve already hit him with enough to knock out a bull elephant!” he points out, “anymore and we might stop his heart!”
Johnny stumbles after them, about ten darts sticking out of his chest. He pants heavily as his vision swims and he struggles to stay upright. But he still advances on them like an angered beast, a knife in each hand.
“Who cares! I don’t think he has a heart!” the first one exclaims. “Shoot him!”
They both fire and the two darts pierce Johnny’s chest. He freezes and his shoulders slump, his knives slipping from his hand.
“Did…did that do it?” the second agent asks.
Without warning, Johnny lunges. Both agents scream, completely unprepared, as he tackles them. His sharp fingers dig into their throats and they gurgle on blood before he crushes them entirely.
Johnny kneels over them, panting heavily as he lifts his bloodied hands out of their bodies. His vision is so cloudy, his head is swimming, and he barely has the strength to stand. But he knows he can’t stay here. It’s not safe.
He shakes off the blood and starts pulling the darts out of his chest one by one as he leaves Devi’s roof by the fire escape. A tenant is sitting out on his window leading to it, enjoying a cigarette. He jumps as Johnny passes, noticing his haggard breath and bloodied hands, but Nny barely sees him.
Johnny lumbers through back streets and dark alleys before finally reaching Grave Road after what feels like an eternity. He drags his feet up to his house and opens the door.
“Jesus Christ, Johnny!” Cammie exclaims, sitting up on the couch. “What happened?”
He’s not able to reply as his body finally gives out and he collapses to the floor.

Rise Part 2: Bitter Storms
Part 2. First part needs to be read in order for the rest of this to be understood. Got it? Read first part.
North from the rest of the world and miles from anything hospitable for the faint of heart, another powerful blizzard struck the island of Berk two nights ago. Damage was minimal, the houses were strong. Everything was paper white snow that was knee-deep, which made the days even colder than normal. And yet, the snow and cold were pushed to the side. The people of Berk were far too busy to mind the cold, that day or any other before it. Everything had to be ready in two days.
Daily life was different in Berk for so many years. Dragons, big and small, mighty and lanky, made the small island their home. They crowded every inch. To its people, Berk and dragons went hand in hand, so much so that the people made a game to honor them. Dragon Racing, a competition for only the fiercest dragon riders. The object: capture as many sheep as possible and drop them in baskets to score. After an intense season, the championship match was fast approaching. The villagers were eagerly preparing for it.
“Little higher!” Tuffnut shouted from down below.
“This good?” Ruffnut, his twin sister, replied. She used their dragons, a Hideous Zippleback, a twin headed dragon, as a ladder. The left head was Barf and the right was Belch.
“You moved it like an inch. Come on, we need to get this place ready for when we win the game. Everybody’s gonna wanna hang out in the champion’s house,” he boasted.
It was obvious which house was theirs. No other house in the village boasted the green marker as much as theirs did. The twins were fitting a shield above the doorway; both were both painted with the green emblem of the Zippleback.
“Yeah, I’ll bet we beat the lovey-dovey dream-team so bad Stoick’ll throw us a parade in our honor,” she laughed. The dragon, named Barf and Belch, chortled with glee at the thought too.
“Now you’re talking! Hey little to the right.” Belch, the right head, moved its rider’s as commanded. “No my right!”
“It’s the same right, idiot!”
“Hey I’m the one whose gonna lead us to victory, no way I want my shield to be crooked.”
“What’re you talkin’ about!? Me and Barf are practically carrying this team!” The dragon head agreed.
“Says you. It’s me and Belch who pick up the slack around here.” The other dragon head agreed. The left head snapped at the right head.
While they argued a lump of snow was seemingly gathered into a firm sphere. No one in the surrounded houses saw it get lifted off the ground and thrown, hitting the grounded twin at the back of the head.
“Ow! Who threw that?” When no one was there to direct his anger at, Tuffnut turned to Ruffnut.
“I thought you said you were the ‘mature twin’ or something. Why’d you throw a snowball at me!?” Tuffnut barked.
“What? How the heck would I throw a snowball at you? I’m off the ground!” Ruffnut growled back.
“I don’t know, maybe you used your witchy powers or something. Always knew you were cursed.”
Another snowball was thrown, hitting Ruffnut that time on the cheek. “Hey! You wanna start somethin’ you better come up here and finish it!”
“Oh ho! It’s on now!”
Tuffnut scaled the dragon to reach his sister. The fight between the twins was like the countless other times they fought—slaps and punches with each breath. Their neighbors found it more annoying than amusing, especially when they turned loud. Deafening insults of every variety shattered the tranquility of the morning. They couldn’t hear themselves over their other’s gripes nor could they hear the laughter of the unseen person who threw the snowballs.
Meanwhile, across the village, a gust of cold wind tussled the back of Snotlout’s hair. Panicked, he dropped the stacks of lumber he carried to quickly fix his mane. The wood his father told him to gather for the game torches rolled away while his concerns were elsewhere. Strands of hair back in alignment, Snotlout admired his reflection on the side of his helmet, but when it wasn’t big enough to see himself he plucked a nearby shield off a house to serve as a mirror.
“Who’s one tough Viking? Who can beat up all the Outcasts with one look and wins all the ladies with another? You are that’s who. Or is…? Whatever, I look darn good,” said Snotlout, blowing a kiss to himself.
For the four days straight Snotlout had been practicing his acceptance, speech, styled his hair, and got his armor shiny bright in anticipation of the Championship match. Actually practicing was the last thing on his mind.
Suddenly a single strand of white hair caught his eye. Snotlout’s jaw hit the ground. He checked his surroundings as though the tiny hair stood out like a twenty foot tall dragon; Snotlout took cover behind the house. With the tips of his fingernails he steadied his hand to remove it without ruining the integrity of the rest of his hair.
Laughter, a mischievous chuckle, found Snotlout behind the house, but just as before it went unnoticed. A young man with skin paler than snow and hair like frozen waves plotted in the shadows. He held a long stick with a curved tip outwards, aimed at Snotlout. A burst of wind escaped, hitting Snotlout’s back and rising to the sky. In a split second, Snotlout was left with a head of messy hair in a confused stupor because it happened so fast.
Snotlout screamed. “My mane! My sweet beautiful hair! It never even got a chance to see me accept the champion’s prize. ARGH!” He cracked his fists. “WHO!?”
Eyes sharp as dagger he searched for the culprit. The young man was laughing without restraint, out in the open. Snotlout looked in his direction and then continue searching. The young man, Jack Frost, threw away secrecy knowing he was safe.
The cold winds picked up again, that time without being called. Jack spread his arms out like wings and the breeze rocketed him into the sky as though he was lighter than a feather. Soaring higher and higher, above the tallest building in the village, Jack wasn’t afraid, rather his smiles widened the higher he got. He flew with a flurry of snowflakes around him. It wasn’t anything new for the young man but it was a sensation he loved every time. He broke away from the current and dove towards the base of the mountain. The ground was fast approaching, he didn’t have any winds to stop his descending speed, and yet Jack saw the spot where he intended to land in. POOF! Jack landed face first into a pile of snow which softened his landing, as intended. He landed in front of a small cave with ice blocks all over the inside, his home.
“I knew moving here was a good idea, something exciting always happens here,” said Jack to himself. He waved his hands, a beam of blue light struck the ground and an ice block formed from his palm; he used it as a chair. “Oh Berk, I hope you never change.”
So many years, too many to count, passed since Jack could remember. He could only remember seeing the moon, feeling cold, and then watching as everyone in the world ignoring him. No matter how loud he screamed, how hard he touched them, no ordinary person could see or hear Jack. In his isolation Jack traveled the world for many years. He eventually stumbled upon Berk, a small island where cold weather was commonplace. Living in the small cave wasn’t ideal at first but he managed. But Berk proved to be more entertainment for Jack than he realized; after witnessing the rise and fall of dragon slaying, he found himself feeling at home in the small island. The commonplace cold weather may have come from him.
A school of Terrible Terrors sailed by his cave. One with a limp wing broke away from the rest and plopped in front of the young man. The tiny creature curled up besides his foot, waiting for Jack to pet him like he always does. Jack smiled, he always enjoyed the company. He lightly hovered his fingers over its spine, without touching it. The Terror purred with delight like Jack had been actually petting it. But the tips of his finger tips went through the dragon’s skin.
“Sorry, little guy, I wish I could give you a good back scratch,” sighed Jack. His inability to touch was a bitter truth that stung him every time.
A rush of wind threw the tiny Terrible Terror through Jack like a sheet of paper. Jack was overjoyed, he raced outside. There was only one dragon on Berk, maybe even in the world, Jack knew could rattle the icicles in his cave with explosive speed alone A dragon-shaped shadow blocked the sun. Toothless, a Nightfury—the unholy offspring of lightning and death itself—zoomed through the clouds with its body in a blur and a roar that energized Jack each time he heard it.
“WOOO! YEAH TOOTHLESS!” Jack cheered, catching his attention, but not his rider’s.
“What’cha looking at, Bud, another sea arch to break like the last one?” He asked. The helmeted rider found the cave but not the young man cheering his dragon on. “Oh a cave? Never noticed that one before. Interesting.”
Out of every story Berk had to tell, Jack was most interested in watching the story of Hiccup unfold. Son of the Stoick the Vast, chief of Berk, the first to ride a dragon, the one who brought peace between Vikings and dragons, and the one who defeated raider after raider. No one on Berk, not even Stoick the Vast, grabbed Jack’s attention more than Hiccup.
Toothless ascended higher. Hiccup clutch the leather brace, clicking his metal leg to adjust the dragon’s tail.
“Come on, Bud! Keep going!” Hiccup roared. Toothless was equally excited.
Jack grabbed his staff and climbed up the mountain side until the wind scooped him up. He used it to follow them above the clouds. But Hiccup and Toothless weren’t stopping there. They climbed and climbed, and Jack flew to the next gust of wind to catch up. Toothless noticed Jack following them but it only made him want to go farther.
Dragon and rider touched the coldest part of the sky, breaking through the overcast to see the glaring sun, but that wasn’t the end of it. Hiccup wanted to break their record. Toothless coughed under his breath without faltering.
“What do you think: first one to open their wings cleans the stables?” Hiccup bartered.
Toothless gave a tooth-less smile in agreement.
Hiccup readied Toothless’ metal attachment. Jack’s favorite part of their daily flights was coming; he watched with eager. Hiccup pushed off Toothless’ saddle, flipping backward and then diving down with his back straight. Toothless joined his rider’s freefalling. Jack closed his body and let the wind drop him like a log.
All three plummeted to the ground, rapid winds clouding their ears, but although Hiccup didn’t know it, he shared the sensation of freedom in freefalling with Jack. Toothless and Hiccup met in the air, laughing at the other. The dragon looked to the side, to Jack, and stuck his tongue out towards him; Jack liked to feel included. Being so high it took some time to see the ground again. Breaking through the clouds the game began. Jack couldn’t decide who would open their wings first. Hiccup was just as brave as Toothless was, or rather the two were the same measure of foolhardy. The mountain peak zoomed by. They were poised to land on top of the great hall’s roof. Cleaning the dragon stables was no easy task, for a dragon or a person, it was obvious neither of the two wanted to be the loser. Hiccup was the first to feel a twinge of fear. The ground was fast approaching. Jack couldn’t hold his excitement.
“The grounds looking really up close and personal, Toothless. Makes a dragon rethink leaving the air,” Jack egged on.
Toothless whimpered.
It was going to be close. The ground. The distance between them and landing a very painful landing. Hiccup could almost see the details in the roof’s tiles. In the end it was Hiccup who unzipped his leather, faux wings first. He caught the wind just in time and then Toothless after. The two reunited with only a couple dozen feet left to go. Hiccup pulled Toothless out of the nosedive and together they touched down safely. Hiccup turned to mush as he fell over; Toothless dropped his belly on the ground. Jack landed with a poof on a pile a snow.
“Looks like I beat the both of you, but Hiccup definitely opened his first so he loses,” remarked Jack.
Toothless whipped his tail to the back of Hiccup’s head to jog his memory.
“Yeah, yeah, I know the terms, I lost so I gotta clean the stables tonight. Fantastic. I hoped for a night with milady, but who wants that when I get to clean dragon poop until past midnight,” groaned Hiccup sarcastically.
“A bet is a bet,” said Astrid who had been waiting by the great hall entrance for them, “and it sounds like you lost so you gotta lose with grace.”
Astrid was the second person to catch Jack’s attention, maybe even rivaling his interest in Hiccup. She was the strongest and bravest young Viking, not to mention she was a combat master. And she was also Hiccup’s girlfriend.
“You don’t sound bummed at all to miss out on a night with me,” said Hiccup.
“What can I say? I like men who uphold the honor of a contest. Besides, I’m actually going to be pretty busy. Stoick asked me to soothe the sheep for the games. A few of them had nervous breakdowns after the last season,” said Astrid, kissing Hiccup on the cheek on his helmet. He took of his leather mask expecting to get a second kiss, but she gave it to the top of Toothless’ head instead.
“Yeah, I guess the sheep need calming so Dragon Racing doesn’t turn into sheep hide-and-seek like last time.” Hiccup comically collapsed on the snow, unknowingly landing next to Jack.
After so many faces coming and going, it was some time since Jack had last seen a face up close like that. Hiccup’s eyes were green. Jack was surprised to discover something he didn’t know about his favorite story in Berk. Intrigue commanded Jack to notice more details like the tiny scar on Hiccup’s chin. Jack finally had a reason to count every freckle on his face. Something compelled Jack to keep staring. He couldn’t remember the last time he laid eyes on something he felt was beautiful but Jack seemed to recognize the sensation when he looked at Hiccup.
Astrid lay down next to Hiccup which put her on the other side of Jack. He noticed the alluring blue of her eyes immediately. Her hair was like strands of straw that had been strung into a gold shine. The freckles on her face were harder to spot, hidden under her flushed face, but Jack discovered them. She was beautiful to Jack too.
She reached for a kiss and Jack stumbled through Hiccup in a panic like it was meant for him. Instead she kissed her boyfriend on the lips that time. Hiccup and Astrid shared a loving moment that made Toothless look away. Jack picked himself up, no longer between them; it was a twist in his stomach, a pain he’d felt before over being left out, and yet it felt different that time.
Jack flipped his raggedy cloak hood over his head as he walked away. He climbed to the top of the great hall, without the wind’s help, and stared into the horizon. It was a lot of uninteresting water. Five minutes staring bored the easily-distracted Jack and he watched the sky instead, though the experience was the same. He was bored, that much was clear, but he didn’t feel like watching Berk then.
“Starting to feel it again. Maybe a change of place would help. But it was impossible to find Berk last time I left. Maybe I’ll visit North and swing by Bunny’s place…for…some…fun…” Jack trailed off at the thought. He realized he’d done the very same thing many times before.
Out of the corner of his ear he heard Hiccup and Astrid laughing. He didn’t want to look. Up there he could hear the twins still arguing over his prank. Another gust of wind hit Snotlout’s hair and he heard him cry out in agony over it. He heard him complain to his friend Fishlegs who sounded like he didn’t know the first thing about hair maintenance. Jack sat upright again. He sat in the highest building in the village, easily observable by everyone, and yet they didn’t see.
Jack puffed out his chest with an inhale. “HEEEEEEEY!” He screamed at the top of his lungs.
The dragons in the surrounding area had their eyes rise at his shout, but the humans he hoped to attract were deaf. It wasn’t often Jack lamented about his circumstances, he was an expert on pushing the emotion down, but that time his eyes twinkled with the water swelling. He crumbled to his knees.
“Why don’t they hear me? I’m here, I’ve always been here. Why don’t they see me?” Jack asked himself. “When does it stop hurting?”
Ice was an instrument Jack knew how to play without practice. The tiles beneath his feet were tainted by a sheet of growing ice he caused. That afternoon a Viking would be surprised to see the roof of the great hall completely frozen over.
In the latest hours the dragons slept with smoke bellowing from their nostrils. Rather than light lanterns, the people had a few dragons perched on top of homes and their snores would give us embers in puffs, enough to light the ground with enough of them huddled together. Berk had surprisingly quiet nights then. No more screams from Vikings as dragons attacked, everything was calm at night. Thankfully the dragon stables were thick enough to keep the noise from disrupting the calm.
Inside were hundreds of sleeping dragons. They eat and rest and socialize in the giant pod and when it was time to spread their wings there was a massive door for them to fly out of. But grouping most of Berk’s dragon in one place provided hazards. The collected stink of their waste in a single place would get so bad if left unchecked, and thus someone needed to clean them every night. The task fell on Hiccup after losing. Shovel in hand and a small escape hatch to dispense the filth into a hole down below. As grueling work as it was, Hiccup has enjoyment.
“Missed a spot,” said Astrid.
Hiccup rolled his eyes. “Yeah, yeah. I thought you said you had sheep to soothe?”
“Of course, and I take my job really seriously. Getting a good night’s rest is essential to being soothed. So I’m letting them sleep and supervising another Viking’s duty at the same time.”
“Love you, babe,” said Hiccup, glad to have some company. He had a second person to keep them company.
Jack snuggled up against the bumpy hide of a Gronckle. The dragon didn’t mind the cold young man as it slept soundly. Almost every dragon was a heavy sleeper. Jack rearranged a stack of rocks that were supposed to be the Gronckle’s midnight snack into a pattern he’d seen once along his travels. Twelve standings stones he’d seen in a far land in a deep forest near a castle. He remembered them not arousing his interest.
“Did you hear about our new trader, Ansgar? The last time he came around I got two really nice daggers at a good deal,” said Astrid, making conversation.
“You and knives is a relationship I’ll never understand. Let’s just hope this trader works out better than the last one,” said Hiccup.
Jack was in a bad mood, one that wasn’t improved by boring side conversation. Everyone else in Berk was asleep and traveling across the world to a place sunny seemed too much of a hassle for the easily deterred young man. As far as Jack knew he didn’t need to sleep. He knocked over his stacks which got the attention of the two. Astrid shrugged it off as the pesky wind, but Hiccup scanned the scattered pebbles with suspicion.
“You know something’s been bothering me for a while now. Sometimes I see Toothless react to something like someone’s talking to him, but there’s never anyone there,” said Hiccup. Jack stirred.
“Dragons have sharper senses that us, they can hear and see things we can’t,” answered Astrid.
He shook his head. “I think it’s more than that. Any time I see Toothless react he always stares off into space like someone is actually there. Usually when Toothless hears something he looks around, but those times it’s like he already knows where the sound is coming from.”
“You’re not trying to tell me Berk has a ghost only Toothless can see?” Astrid laughed.
“Not even close,” remarked Jack.
“Come on, what do you take me for? I’m not that paranoid,” said Hiccup.
“It’s just another dragon mystery we’ll probably never know. You can’t discover them all.”
“No don’t give up, I’m sure you’ll figure it out,” Jack said sarcastically, rolling his eyes.
Hiccup took a hearty puff of breath, fueling the flame in his chest into a blaze, in the last spurt of labor with the remaining pile of poop. Two more roundabouts and Hiccup threw the last scoop out. It proved to be too much for him. Hiccup panted while his body rejected every ounce of sweat he had to give. Astrid went in for a kiss but her boyfriend smelled of sweat and poop so she kept her distance.
“Ho oh, mighty Thor you have bested the enemies of poop and are victorious in battle!” Astrid puffed her voice to sound deep.
“I finished before the first rooster call, that’s way better than last time, so I get to have the last laugh,” gloated Hiccup.
“Let’s head back, I need sleep and you need a bath.”
“It’s going to be cold,” Jack grumped.
“It’s going to be cold though,” Hiccup pouted.
Hiccup and Astrid went side by side, though with some space in between. Jack didn’t feel like following, preferring to stay in the now clean stables with the only creatures in the island that could keep him company. Hiccup touched the door out when a breeze nipped the back of his neck. It was meant to keep him there. A whisper he heard next. Astrid heard a tiny voice behind them where none should be. The two dragon riders reached for their weapons as they turned around, but they would never get to use them. A blue flare caught Jack’s eye and he too saw what they did. What looked like a tiny campfire without the wood beckoned them to come closer with what looked like stringy arms. The whisper came from it.
“Hiccup?” Astrid stuttered, but Hiccup didn’t have a clue either.
Jack shot to his feet and got a closer. He didn’t expect the tiny flame to turn to him and beckon him as well. To Hiccup and Astrid the flame turned to an empty space, and then back to them. It stirred, flying towards Hiccup and Astrid; Astrid drew her axe but the little flame went complete through her stomach and out her back, floating like a little firefly, and then hovering by the door, signaling them.
“Uh…I think it wants us to follow it,” Hiccup spoke.
“I’d say we shouldn’t but you got that look in your eye. Do you think it’s safe?” She asked.
“Not sure, but if it wanted to attack us it would’ve done it already. Besides, if anything happens, Toothless’ll come in a second.”
Meanwhile Jack was raring to following the little ember, but it wouldn’t move until they did.
It was reluctantly that Astrid agreed to accompany Hiccup. She knew common sense wouldn’t stop Hiccup’s curiosity from going.
Seemingly boundless, it left a trail of dazzling sparkles. The sentient blue flame didn’t speak above its inaudible whispers and its soul purpose was to make sure they followed it all around Berk’s village. There were no night watchmen to see it, or to call for help. Hiccup and Astrid followed it more than they watched the road it led them on.
Jack followed closer up. He saw nothing much to it’s besides the other side of its flame, but he meant to follow it anyways. Finally another creature that seemed to notice he was there, and it asked him to follow, which he was more concerned about than the fact that it called Hiccup and Astrid too. But as for answering his questions, it only called him to follow.
Soon, it led them away from the city, through the forest, and then to the base of the mountain. When they were far the nearest house, Hiccup and Astrid raised their guards. Jack saw them clutch their weapons. He woke up from his mindless following to find apprehension in the curious ember, and he grabbed his staff with both hands, aimed at it. The ember ran up to a slender bolder that stood upright in a clearing in the forest. To Jack it was the same as the ones he’d seen.
“A rock?” Astrid identified.
“Never seen it before,” said Hiccup. The lantern zipped around it. “But it looks like it’s important.”
The flame climbed the rock and hovered at the very top. Coming closer to it, strange markings were shown to them—swirling patterns that seemed to be incomplete. All three drew closer, slowly. The flame wiggled its arms.
“I think this is something important,” said Hiccup.
“Come on, I came all this way, will you answer me now? You can hear me, can’t you?” Jack inquired. Still the flame beckoned them.
Hiccup, Astrid, and Jack took their step in the clearing. The flame stirred, startling them, and it circled around the pillar. It vanished after it touched the ground.
“Hey wait!” Jack shouted. He didn’t notice his voice was louder than usual.
A sensation he hadn’t felt since the dragons, he felt eyes on his him. Hiccup and Astrid jumped when a voice came out nowhere and then a young man appeared right in front of their eyes. They were staring in his direction. Jack whipped his head behind, but he couldn’t see what they saw. He turned back and they had finished leaning in closer. Jack took a step to the side and their eyes followed him. Their eyes followed him.
“C-Can you…see me?” Jack gasped.
Astrid and Hiccup both nodded their head, too spooked for words.
“Can you hear me?”
Again they nodded.
Jack’s knees gave up on him and he dropped down. His body reacted with what looked like stage fright; he crawled backwards until he met the standing stone. They watched him skitter away. They watched him panting furiously. They watched him stare back at them. They saw him. Jack repeated the fact in his head to make sure he acknowledged it.
The two saw a nervous young man who looked about the same age at them, paralyzed as if fearful. It was obvious, they never seen him in the village before. He wore rags for clothes, holding a long stick, with pale skin and silver hair like fresh snow. A thought crossed their mind at the same time without the other knowing: Astrid and Hiccup individually thought the young man was immensely handsome. They didn’t see any weapons visible on him and to them he looked like he was scared out of his mind. Astrid let go of her axe and Hiccup crouched down to Jack’s eye level.
“Hey there, its okay, we won’t hurt you,” said Hiccup, not sure what to say. He pulled Astrid down.
“You really startled us there, we had no idea you were here too,” Astrid said tenderly. She was not one for small talk with new faces.
“Is he that new trader you told me about?” Hiccup asked her on the side.
“Ansgar is twice as old as him. See, you’d know if you take down from time to time,” she corrected.
“Okay, got it. Are you new around here? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you—”
A tear streaming down Jack’s cheek interrupted Hiccup, and then another.
“Are you okay? Are you hurt?” Astrid inquired. She extended a hand to him, Jack took it. “Holy—! Your hands are so cold! Hiccup, he’s freezing over, we have to take him to the village!”
She felt a hand cold like stone while Jack touched the warmth of her palm. Joy beyond the ability of words to describe washed Jack into a stupor. He couldn’t remember what it felt to touch another person. Were hands always this warm, he wondered. How much pressure should he give? Should he make his hand go limp? Regardless of the question, Jack’s body went limp on its own. Astrid didn’t realize she was the first human to touch Jack in countless years. Hiccup became the second.
“Whoa you’re right! No wonder you’re so pale. Let’s take him to the workshop, Gobber’s furnace is hot enough to melt fire,” said Hiccup.
“Can you stand?” Astrid inquired.
Jack threw his arms around Astrid’s neck and pressed his cheek to hers like a kitten. His face was colder. Astrid was bewildered, turning to Hiccup but when he didn’t know what to do she patted his back to offer awkward support. The attention made her blush.
“This is real. You can see me. I can feel,” Jack sobbed, feeling the tickle of Astrid’s long hair on his brow; she smelled like charcoal and violets.
“What do you mean?” Hiccup asked.
Jack jumped from Astrid to hug Hiccup. His cheeks were warmer and he smelled like sweat and dragon poop, a less pleasant aroma, but Jack didn’t care. Even with a girlfriend, Hiccup’s reactions to affection from an attractive source were poor. Jack felt his cheeks burn twice as hot.
“I’m sorry!” Jack apologized after realizing it but without letting go of Hiccup. “No one’s ever been able to see me like you. Please just a bit more.”
“No one could see you? And you’re cold. Are you actually a ghost?” Astrid asked believing it.
Jack finally let Hiccup go. The idea was absurd, but it was then that Jack found himself struggle for answers. “I don’t know.”
Gobber’s workshop was precariously in the middle of the village. It allowed for easy access to weapons and equipment during the time of random dragon attacks in the middle of the night. But on a calm night it sat with the furnace exhausted. Without anyone patrolling the village that night it was easy for Hiccup and Astrid to sneak a new person and start the fire to warm him up. Strangely, the furnace didn’t burn as bright. They wrapped Jack around a leather quilt they’d normally take pieces from for various leather needs, but that night it became a blanket. Hiccup lightly touched Jack’s cheek, recoiling because it was still cold. As they waited, Jack told them everything. As far back as he could remember when he was named by the Man on the Moon, North and Bunny, and where how many years had passed. When he was finished it was obvious they were skeptical.
Jack pointed the crooked end of his staff on the ground. An icicle formed and rose as he raised his hand. It was more than credible proof. Astrid and Hiccup were floored.
“Wow. That’s magic if I ever saw it. And I always thought magic was just one of Gobber’s stories,” said Hiccup, thoroughly impressed.
“It’s beautiful,” said Astrid which made Jack blush.
“Thanks. Being able to do this is the first thing I could remember. The Man on the Moon told me my name and then let me loose in the world; I had to find out things on my own. There are a few who can see me but people like you…don’t. The dragons can see me, but I can’t touch them.”
“So that’s what it was! Every time I saw Toothless react to something, was that you?” Hiccup asked.
“Yeah, sorry, I just can’t resist how great of a dragon Toothless is, and how great of a rider you are. I watch your rides all the time, it’s my favorite thing in the morning. I really like it when you use your wings too,” said Jack. Hiccup blushed, which Astrid caught and she giggled. “I watch you too, Astrid. I love when you ride on Stormfly’s tail.”
“Well at least we know he has taste,” Astrid gloated.
“So you’ve been here the whole time watching us. It kind of makes me feel a little guilty we didn’t see you,” said Hiccup.
“It’s okay, you didn’t know. Besides, before today I was used to it, but now—! Look at me! I’m talking to my two favorite people on Berk! This is crazy!” Jack laughed. With his laughter the furnace flame were lowered.
Jack threw off his blanket and hopped around the tiny shop faster than a rabbit. The two riders were surprised by his agility and lack of restraint by gravity. His smile was bright with shimmering happiness. It was enough to lift Hiccup’s cheeks, but he found himself thinking elsewhere.
“Jack, it’s great we can see you now, but how can we see you now? If you couldn’t show yourself to us then what happened this time for things to be different? Was it that fire that did it?” He asked.
He finally stopped on top of the furnace. His bare feet barely felt the heat; Jack preferred himself to be up high instead on the ground.
“Don’t ask me, I’ve never seen a fire come a life, but I have seen a stone like that before. It was south…or was it east…wait, which one is the left direction? Whatever, it was in a land far from here and it had twelve big stone standing in a circle. I heard the locals saying they were magical but they were really boring.”
“Hmm, can’t sit still and gets easily bored, wonder who he reminds me of,” Astrid mocked. Hiccup ignored her.
“I’m not an expert on magic so I wouldn’t be able to say anything. But I say we shouldn’t look a gift dragon in the mouth. We can see you now, Jack, that’s all that matters,” smiled Hiccup.
“Thanks, Hiccup, it feels nice to be seen.”
“Hey, you said you could fly. We should totally have a race first thing tomorrow morning! I want to see what you got,” said Astrid.
“Now you’re talking my language! Me against you and Stormfly,” huffed Jack, confronting Astrid.
“Well this sounds like a recipe for disaster. Count me out,” said Hiccup.
“Party pooper. Where’s the Hiccup that took down a Red Death years ago? Maybe you’re hiding him under all that ‘muscle’,” Jack teased.
“Whoa, whoa, excuse me, what are you trying to say?” Hiccup asked.
“I see your extra padding on your arms and chest.”
Astrid chuckled, not picking a side.
The tools hanging from the ceiling rattled. A powerful rumble happened upon near them and a shadow walked around the tiny workshop. The three froze in place like statues, being caught off guard. It was Stoick, Berk’s chieftain and Hiccup’s father, that shook the ground with his very steps. The giant of a man had to duck under the doorway to get through.
“Hiccup? Astrid? What the blazes are you doing up at this hour?” He asked.
“It was by day to clean the stables and Astrid was with me,” said Hiccup, although he wondered why they were the people Stoick focused on first.
“Oh, good, Skullcrusher loves it when the stables are clean. Guess our night ride took longer than I thought, I was just about to head home. You’d better get some rest too, Hiccup, big day coming up, don’t want to fall asleep at the helm,” said Stoick.
“Wait, Dad, you’re okay with this?” Hiccup was nervous to ask, pointing to Jack who was silent.
Jack felt the authority the chief had over the entire island just by looks alone. He very rarely followed Stoick’s story. Even though before he knew he wouldn’t be seen, Jack was always afraid to be seen by the man who was rumored to have popped a dragon’s head off at birth. The fact that he rode a dragon only made him scarier to Jack.
“Okay with what, son? Oh! Never you mind that! You’re mother and I had midnight meetings when I was your age. Of course we chose better meeting places like behind the waterfall, oh and that time in the mountain, and that one time by the beach,” he listed without an end.
“Ew, Dad, not that. Don’t you see—?”
“Oh! Looks like Gobber finished buffing my sword and didn’t tell me. Probably asleep on the job like the last time, and the time before that, and…before that. Should probably talk to him about staying up late too.”
Stoick went over the furnace. Jack didn’t notice he was crouched on top of a sword in a sheathe. He went to move aside when Stoick reached his hand straight through Jack’s feet to pick up the sword which too phased through the young man. Astrid, Hiccup, and especially Jack were in shock.
“I’ll see you at home, Hiccup, just don’t get too crazy,” joked Stoick as he left.
Astrid broke the shock by quickly grabbed Jack’s arm. She could still touch him and she very clearly saw him there—she saw the look of dismay in his eyes.
“I don’t understand, my Dad couldn’t see you? What—?” Hiccup couldn’t wrap his mind around it.
Jack panted heavily into his hands. He stumbled off the furnace and raced after Stoick.
“HEY! STOICK I’M RIGHT HERE!” Jack screamed.
The chief kept walking without anything grabbing his ear.
“I’M JACK FROST! I KNOW YOUR DRAGON IS SKULLCRUSHER! I KNOW YOU’RE THE BRAVEST CHIEF EVER!”
Stoick unsheathed his sword to admire it. He couldn’t see much in the moonless night, but he pressed his thumb to the edge and flinched. It was as sharp as he liked it. He drifted away.
Jack started to cry, squeezing his fists. He ran after him, tripping and dropping his staff in the process. Jack reached for the man in desperation.
“I’M HERE!” Jack cried pounding the earth. Stoick was out of sight. “Please…don’t…go…”
The tears falling from his cheeks frozen and shattered like glass on the earth. He felt an unimaginable pain twisting his stomach, endless that got worst once his mind pictured every time he tried to reach to someone and then being ignored. There were so many.
Hiccup and Astrid were unsure what to do. What could they say? Everything about Jack was something they’d never experienced before. When they couldn’t think of words of comfort they were hesitant to take another step closer.
The winds shrieked.
Hiccup and Astrid took both sides of Jack. They may not have known what to say to him but they both shared the same thought to console him. They wrapped their arms around the young man and held him. It only made Jack cry harder. He threw himself on Hiccup, and then Astrid pressed her face on Jack’s back.
Astrid couldn’t believe the pain in her stomach hearing Jack’s cries. It was enough to make her cry, something rare in the Viking warrior who prided herself on being tough. Before she knew it a tear escaped her eyes, and then cut her cheek. It turned to ice in a second. What’s more, Astrid could see her breath like a thick fog.
Meanwhile, Hiccup felt his body drop in temperature like a freefall. His fingers stiffened.
“Uh…Jack…” Hiccup stammered finding it awkward to point it out.
“Sorry, Hiccup,” said Jack, prying himself from the other young man, without realizing the cold himself.
“It’s not that. Look!” Hiccup pointed to the sky.
Scattered blotches of white, at first slowly, trickled down from the unusually darkened sky. The ends of Astrid’s hair were blown across her face. The cold winds were returning, and they were gaining speed. Hiccup was pelted on his head. A tiny rock fell from the sky and melted—hail. The village rooftops beat like hundreds of drums being struck by the zooming rocks. The three took shelter in the workshop. In mere minutes, snow rained, the hail fell without mercy, and the village vanished under the veil of snowfall and hail. The sleeping dragons innocently nesting on top of the houses were spooked into taking flight, either off the island or into the stables. It no time at all, the village bell was rung.
“BLIZZARD!” It was Stoick’s voice that thundered above the storm—he was the one sounding the alarm.
Door after door of Viking household burst open with a powerful warrior on the other side. They grabbed tarps and nailed down anything that would fly away. An onslaught of snow and hail did little to deter them from accepting the chieftain’s call. When dragons used to attack they’d spring into action equally fast.
“No it’s my turn to nail the bog pot!” Tuffnut shouted.
“We go by who was born first!” Ruffnut countered.
“So it’s my turn!” They both said at the same time. Hiccup wasn’t surprised he could hear them through the winds.
“Jack…” Hiccup inquired.
“It’s not me…I mean…this has never happened before. I don’t…maybe it is…but I don’t know,” Jack fumbled his words while his mind trailed off.
Gobber hopped to throw Stoick a big hammer. The chief pounded wooden stakes into the ground, tying down the ropes that held a huge lantern they used for the dragons. Old clumps of charcoal flew everywhere. It came time for Gobber to tie his own end, but the snow scratched his eyes.
“I can’t see!” The fat blacksmith shouted.
“I came to save the day!” None of them heard Snotlout shout obnoxiously.
He appeared riding on his dragon, Hookfang, a Monstrous Nightmare dragon. Being the center of attention interested Snotlout more than being helpful, and as a result he forgot one fact about his dragon. As he clicked his heels on Hookfang’s neck, the dragon’s entire body became coated in a blazing inferno that was meant to act as a beacon. However, Snotlout’s bottom was burned and he leapt off his dragon because his pants caught fire.
“GAH! WHY DO I ALWAYS FORGET THAT!?” Snotlout cried.
Every from as far back as the great hall to the stables could see Hookfang’s fire. For a moment. The storm grew once more, the increase in snowfall extinguished the dragon, and he sought warmth himself.
A roof was ripped off one house. The water in the village’s well had made its transition to become solid ice in an instant. And even the fiercest of the Vikings, Stoick, felt his beefy arms succumb to the cold.
“It’s getting crazy out there; this storm is out of control. Jack, could you do something about it?” Astrid asked.
“I don’t know, this has never happened before. Ugh! It feels—different from other times. I feel angry and scared and…sad. And my powers were working, I can feel it happening, but I don’t feel like I have control,” Jack explained.
“What if this is a new power? I mean if you think about it it’s something you’ve never seen before so of course you’re not going to know about it. Kind of like when Stormfly used that waterspout thing,” said Hiccup.
“I guess that makes sense, but how do we stop it?” Astrid argued.
“Let me try something,” said Jack.
He jumped out from the workshop, into the open. The cold, the wind, the snow and the hail, he was used to all of it from being in parts of the world where those were abundant, it didn’t disturb him in the slightest. He held his staff tight in one hand. The air was invested with frost; a deep breath tickled his nostrils with it. Jack felt he sensation of his powers fester in his stomach. Any other time using his powers came easier than breathing to him, but the situation called for him to be more mature in his approach. Jack slammed the end of his cane down. His hands glowed deep azure blue. His hair stood on end.
“Whoa he’s really something,,,amazing,” said Hiccup without realizing he did so. He clapped his hand over his mouth when Astrid stared back at him. “Uh…I didn’t mean to say that! It just slipped out! Not that I was thinking it!”
“Hiccup…how did you say the same thing I was thinking?” Astrid asked, being more astounded by that.
By a face full of red and a blank stare, they knew what the other was thinking because they were thinking it themselves. Surprise followed. So many questions zipped in their minds without them being able to answer any of them.
Jack stood planted for a while. The storm gained more momentum and without anything else that came to mind he continued doing what he had been doing.
“Hiccup! Astrid! What’re you doing!? Get out of there!” Stoick hollered.
An iron nail flew out of his hand and rolled away. He raced after it, unknowingly going through Jack to reach it. The chief didn’t see the young man.
Jack lurched forward, the pain in his stomach returned tenfold.
Ruffnut and Tuffnut settled on pinning down their precious family pot together when they were thrown to the ground. A hailstone the size of an apple knocked their heads together. The wind then scratched their skin with flakes of ice.
“RAH! I’M HURT! I AM VERY MUCH HURT!” They both wailed.
The Vikings were being attacked by a never ending barrage of ice. They withstood as much as they could up until that point, but the growth in hail and the ice chipping away at their skin proved to be their breaking point. Not to mention the winds grew so strong the tiles on their homes bombarded them next.
BAM! The statue outside the great hall fell over. The head of a great Viking from longs past was the next to wreak havoc, plowing everything in its destructive path. Fishlegs stumbled along said path. He had delivering leather tarps to anyone who swiped them out of his hands. The rampaging head missed a step and shook the ground with its landing. Fishlegs heard it coming then and screeched as he moved out of the way. But then he heard tiny screams above the roars.
Children were in the boulder’s path, their house having been ripped almost entirely off the ground. Fishlegs ran as fast as tiny legs could take him. He threw himself on top of the children as a shield, and he braced himself for the impact.
Jack put his concentration on hold. Swinging the staff like a sword, he threw a gust of wind that flung the rolling head off its current course. The children and Fishlegs were safe.
“Hiccup! Astrid! I can’t stop it!” Jack cried.
Eyes trained in hyper focus, Hiccup spotted new tears across Jack’s face. The pattern was slowly beginning to unravel. The storm appearing when Jack was distraught, the storm getting worse when Stoick passed through him again. It came to him!
“It’s his feelings. Astrid, its Jack’s feelings! This all start because he was sad and it got worse. His powers are reacting to his feelings,” Hiccup explained.
“Whoa, just like what happened when Gobber took away Grump’s sleep toy and he was belching fireballs the side of boulders.”
“Exactly. If we can calm Jack down maybe the storm will let up. I mean, it’s worth a try.”
Astrid was willing to try, but there had been hesitation to reach Jack before and it was still there then. “But what are we supposed to say to make this better? Nobody but us sees him. He’s been lonely for a long time. I can’t imagine what that must feel like.”
It was a heavy sigh Hiccup said, “I can.”
The storm had transformed into an unimaginable degree. The Vikings switched from nailing things down to having their arms full of their belongings to keep them from soaring away into oblivion. Jack’s next step on his mad dash to the workshop didn’t touch the ground. Fast like a fish caught in an eagle’s talon he was swooped off the ground. He waved his hands, thrust his chest forward, whatever he’d used to do to get down from a pesky air current, but the ground drifted further and further away, slowly but indefinitely.
“Oh come on, what else?!” Jack griped to himself.
“He did say he could fly, right?” Hiccup asked.
“Something’s wrong,” Astrid concluded.
Astrid snatched a line of rope under the workshop counter and raced headfirst into the storm. Hiccup followed. The torrent frightened away the Viking that nailed the giant lantern down. One swish of her ax, Astrid severed the bottom of the rope and was flung into the air by the weight of the structure tipping to one side. She whistled. The wind swept her up as well so she had plenty of time while she was waiting. Stormfly, Astrid’s Deadly Nadder, answered her call, catching her with the saddle.
“YA!” Astrid cracked her dragon’s whips.
Undoubtedly even the most skilled dragon rider on Berk would think twice about flying in such a storm. Astrid and Stormfly were braver than most riders. The winds were powerful but so were the wings of Deadly Nadder. The pair sailed across the blinding storm like a paper crane with Astrid only able to see a silhouette in the air—there wasn’t anyone else being tossed around in the air besides Jack. Stormfly wouldn’t be able to touch Jack, but Astrid found a solution. She slide down the scaly skin and clung to her dragon’s talons.
“Over there, girl!” Astrid commanded.
The dragon saw the floating young man and knew at once she was meant to lift her rider up so she could catch him. Astrid hung from her feet next, stretching out her hands, upside down. She grabbed Jack’s hands as Stormfly zoomed away from the epicenter of the storm.
“So what’s better: me riding on Stormfly’s tail or me hanging from Stormfly’s talons, upside down, while I say a damsel in distress?” She joked.
Before that day, Jack had never been seen let alone rescued from the air. He couldn’t help by be enamored by Astrid as she held him.
“Don’t joke, between the two of us I have all the damsel,” Jack found time to joke back.
“You know I could always drop you.” Astrid laughed. Her laugh was gorgeous, something that Jack was quick to notice. He finally smiled.
Watching Astrid fly would always send chills down Hiccup’s spine. He could seldom feel the chill from the actual storm then. A hailstone knocked his daydreaming out, but he felt a softer impact. The ice clods had become snowballs then. It was working.
“Stormfly, fly around and make sure no one else is flying,” said Astrid once the dragon let her and Jack down. Her dragon understood and flew on her way.
Once again the three took shelter in the workshop. It was fortunate Gobber was an excellent carpenter in addition to being a blacksmith or else the tiny building would be miles away from Berk by then. Hiccup nailed the last remaining shred of leather to cover the openings. Though the hail was light the winds were no less raspy with their wails.
“I couldn’t stop it, Hiccup, I tried. I don’t get it, I did everything I usually do. This whole thing doesn’t make sense,” Jack lamented.
“Hiccup thinks its more complicated than that, Jack,” said Astrid.
“The storm is reacting to your feelings. When you felt sad about being ignored the storm started and got worse. But now look! The hail’s soft now, it’s getting better,” Hiccup smiled. Jack didn’t return his smile.
“So it is my fault.” Jack dropped his face into his hands. It was the reaction Hiccup wanted to avoid.
Hiccup sat next to Jack. “Were you here when dragons still attacked the village?”
“Yeah?” Jack was confused by the sudden question.
“So you saw how people used to look at me as. They saw me as a screw-up and when they weren’t doing that, they didn’t see me at all. I know it can hurt a lot, doesn’t it?”
“Like everyone is passing you by while you’re watching them. They move on—”
“And you’re stuck standing there,” Hiccup finished Jack’s thought.
Jack’s fingers trembled from the swelling in his stomach. Astrid held his hands, they were colder than before.
“I don’t know what it feels like to be complete invisible to people but I know how loneliness can feel. So I thought killing a dragon would get me noticed, but really I just wanted people to accept me. And then I met Toothless and suddenly things changed. Toothless and I understood each other more than anyone else on Berk. He made me feel seen. If you told me then that I, a Viking, would be friends with a dragon I’d call you crazy, it seemed impossible, but it happened. Sort of like when you met us.”
Hiccup rested his hand on top of Astrid’s on top of Jack’s.
“We see you now, Jack. You don’t have to feel alone anymore,” Astrid added.
“You’re our friend now. Right?” Hiccup didn’t want to assume it right away.
Astrid felt her palm heat up. Jack was crying except a timid smile breaking the ice on his face. She and Hiccup hugged him. The young man did felt hold but it was pleasant like a cold drink. Jack joyfully received their hug, and the two knew it was also his way of accepting them as his friends. The tear on his face didn’t turn to ice.
Outside the storm stopped almost right away, unnaturally of course. The Vikings came out of their place of hiding to prepare in case of another wave of frost, without knowing there wouldn’t be any.
Meanwhile, the three basked in the warmth a tiny workshop brought.
The night of the vanishing storm would go on the Viking history book as the strangest night to ever befall the island. It appeared and left in an instant. Then the skies became so clear it was unimaginable there was even a storm to begin with. Not a single star was obstructed. In the midst waiting for the second wind to strike the Viking were left bewildered when nothing happened. Hours went by and they finally came out from cover. When morning came the hail and snow melted quickly. However, the damage did not vanish as fast. The storm had crumbled almost every house to splinters. The winds blew Ruffnut and Tuffnut’s many adornments to the middle of the forest. The dragon stables were nearly knocked into the sea. And of course the statue outside the great hall was missing a head.
Already tired and irritated, the Vikings got to work repairing everything at the first sign of daybreak. They worked with sour faces. Dragons needed to be caroled, sheep needed to be calmed, again, buildings needed to be repaired. It wouldn’t be done in two days time. The championship match had to be postponed for at least a week, maybe more. It was an unspoken fact that the Vikings took with a grain of salt. Still, everyone pitched in to do their own share.
Jack watched from his cave, vexed with his lack of things to do. A Terrible Terror slept beside him. Hiccup and Astrid were down helping with the repairs and checking off what was and what wasn’t flown away by the storm. It was busy work for the both of them. Jack tracked Hiccup and Astrid, having a vantage point to see them both.
Hiccup carried a notepad and marked whatever Gobber pointed to. After the seventh mark for the unchanged number of sheep, Hiccup waved his fingers to the mountain where he knew only Jack would see it.
Astrid flew with Stormfly to deliver lumber from the forest. It was the dragon’s job to cut down trees. Such a task would be better suited for a Timberjack, but Stormfly’s skill at deforestation was no less excellent. The two flew around the rim of the mountain for another round of lumber when she gave a more energetic wave to Jack who waved back.
Into the low hours of afternoon the Vikings took a break. Dinner was one meal those in Berk would never skip. Every hammer was dropped and a feast was served. Sour faces were sweetened by a hearty meal, and merriment rung inside the great hall. Jack could smell roasted chicken and the guffaw could be hear from the other side of the mountain. He wanted to watch the merriment, but he couldn’t join them.
Astrid managed to pull Hiccup away from the party. It wasn’t easy, especially with a plate of food. They climbed to the top of the great hall and signaled for Jack. He leaped off the mile high cave. The two riders flinched, for a moment it looked like their friend was freefalling, but a friendly breeze caught him before he touched the ground.
“We brought you some food, you know, in case you were hungry, in case you can actually eat it,” Hiccup presented the plate of a roasted chicken leg, corn and a cooked potato.
Jack touched the chicken leg but it only reacted weakly to his touch as thought he pushed it with a feather.
“Thanks, but as far as I know I don’t need to eat anyway. North and Bunny can eat, but what they have going on is way more confusing,” said Jack.
They sat on the edge of the roof. On a day after a snowstorm the snow sparkled like diamonds beneath the sun which always seemed brighter. The air was crisp. They watched the ice break away from the bigger cluster only to be shattered when the waves brought them to shore.
“I’m sorry I can’t do anything to help, guys,” said Jack, “even though I caused it.”
“As far as my dad knows: it was a random snowstorm. No one was hurt and it’ll take a week at best to get everything back to normal,” said Hiccup, optimistic.
“Oh I know it’ll take you guys no time to get all this rebuilt. I’m just glad no one was hurt.”
“We will need cold drinks for the work tomorrow so stick around a bit,” Astrid joked.
Jack clutched his staff and his fist tight. Tiny squares of ice fell between his fingers. Astrid was impressed if not surprised her joke turned out to be a good idea.
“I found Berk by accident. One day I found a weird gust of wind so I decided to take it, see where it’d take me, and that’s when I saw Berk. It’s always cold here, there was a good cave, and there was always something interesting happening. And you know, it felt right staying here. I think Berk was always meant to be my home.”
“It could be better if you decided to stay with me. I’m sure Dad won’t mind another tenant,” said Hiccup.
“Thanks, Hiccup, but I’m fine where I’m sat, and I want to avoid being reminded I’m not really here. You probably don’t want another snowstorm.”
Hiccup and Astrid nodded, reiterating the agreement they finalized. They had been talking a lot about it during the party, a serious discussion held around people whose inside voice was rowdy. The agreement was done between two who trusted each other more than anyone else. They took Jack’s hands, holding them with an extra soft touch.
“We see you, Jack,” said Astrid. “Sure it wasn’t the most ideal meeting, but we’re glad we finally got to meet you.”
“This is normally not my thing, but I’ll make an exception for you. That is if it doesn’t feel weird,” Hiccup awkwardly muttered, his cheeks flushed.
They moved in closer. Jack was sandwiched by their shoulders pressing against his. Slowly, their faces leaned in closer to his. Confusion struck the young man. They tightened their hold on his hands. Jack was overwhelmed as though he was trapped. He saw a way to get free but he didn’t want to get free. Their breaths brushed his cheek, they were really warm. Jack turned to stone. Only when their lips were inches from touching his cheeks did he realize what was happening, not that it did him any good knowing for it only made his mind give out harder. It was too much. Jack couldn’t be more elated, without knowing he would never feel their kiss.
The great hall rattled, Astrid and Hiccup were jostled. Flakes of clay tiles hit their faces. The merriment down below stopped flat. Something had landed on the great hall to deliver the silence—something big. A mud-colored tail cracked the roof with a powerful strike. A dragon no one had ever seen before eyed Astrid, Hiccup and Jack with immovable silver eyes. Its single roar, powerful as it was frightening, shook Berk with dread.

DISCLAIMER: Some terminology may be off about the battle and the alien army itself. I haven't seen Infinity War in a while though I did consult the script and other resources. I'm not breaking my back to make every tiny detail accurate guys, I'm just not.

When the Gems arrive, the caverns are dark except for a humming blue glow from the cavern walls. Peridot is immediately drawn to the minerals that make up the walls. “Whoa, this stuff is vibranium! Super rare and super strong,” she reported as she traces her hand along the various patches of raw vibranium. She could only imagine how strong gems could be if they were made in a Kindergarten here.
As they walk along, Pearl gets uneasy, “Something doesn’t seem right. Was— was this like this the last time we were here?” She asks hesitantly. It’d been millennia since the gems last used this particular warp.
“Ah, don’t be paranoid Pearl, no one knows about this place except… us…” Amethyst retorts, but she trails off as they exit the chamber into the rest of the mine. Huge chunks of the vibranium had been excavated, and various high-tech trains transported the mineral to the surface. As each train passed, the humming reverb echoed off the expansive walls of the mine, creating a chorus of never-ending magnetism. The gems’ jaws collectively drop.
“There’s no way this is Earth tech, and it’s too different for gem tech too!” Pearl exclaims. How could they have not known about this?
“The only way we find out is on the surface,” Garnet resolved.
“Yeah, but how the heck do we get allllll the way up there?” Amethyst huffs, gesturing upwards. There was no clear exit or indication that there was a surface. Garnet observes as a train started to pass by.
“We hitch a ride,” she states. Before anyone could react to her statement she grabs Amethyst and throws her at the train.
“Wahooooo!” Amethyst exclaims as she hurtles towards the train and latches on. She’s soon out of sight due to the train’s speed, but the train was far from done passing by.
“Me next,” Peridot proclaims. Garnet gives a microscopic nod and throws her too. Success. She turns to the rest of them.
“I’m okay, I’ll meet you up there,” Lapis says as she summons her water wings and flies off.
“Uh, I’ll escort Steven and Connie to the surface a different way,” Pearl decides. Steven groans, but Garnet nods, “Stay safe,” she says with a smile. With that, Garnet leaps up a tremendous height and was able to catch the train before it finished passing by.
“Right,” Pearl says, once they’re the only ones left. She peers around the cavern before spotting a path, “This looks like a section of the original structure, we can follow it to the surface,” she reports confidently as she leads the way. Connie and Steven glance at each other and shrug before following.
Meanwhile, on the train, Garnet swung herself to the top of it after latching on and was making her way to the other two. Amethyst was holding on with her whip and Peridot was practically attached to her.
“Why does this train feel so weird?” Amethyst shouted over the sounds of electricity. Her form and voice seemed to wavier as sonic energy pulsed towards the train. While Garnet didn’t seem to struggle to stay upright, she felt a quivering sensation as well, as if she was going to internally collapse. Peridot finally opens her eyes and takes a look around. It was hard to see the struts along the track as they whizzed by them, but she had a clue of what was going on.
“It’s pulsing some sort of energy, we likely won’t last long here!!” She concludes.
“We have to get off as soon as possible,” Garnet replies urgently. She couldn’t have them all poof before they reach the fight! She spots a bit of sunlight and doesn’t hesitate. Garnet scoops up Amethyst and Peridot leaps up. Amethyst saw that they weren’t going to make it and threw out her whip so that it latched onto a stalactite. Finally, they swing to safety.
“Good work,” Garnet says simply as she puts both gems down. Amethyst only replies with a small, smug smile.
The area they exit out onto was a minor loading dock, but not the main exit. The scene they are greeted with once they finally exit the mines is that of utter chaos. T’Challa had given the order to open the barrier partially and The Outriders were pouring in. They were off to the east of the main battle and had an impressive view of the front line. Peridot was beginning to regret her decision to come.
Garnet sensed her concern, “Stay close to us, we’ll cover you.” Peridot considered it and nodded. She had her ferrokinesis to help her and she could possibly take a weapon from the fallen. The three of them leap down into the battle and head for the front with their weapons drawn and ready. Peridot remained behind the two of them, eyes scanning for danger.
“Whoa!” Amethyst shouts as she dodges an Outrider. She throws out her whip and it wraps around the creature's throat. She then swings it around, “Catch Garnet!” Garnet turns and punches it with her heavy gauntlets, launching the creature across the battlefield. A horde of nearby enemies take notice to them and break off from the main front to apprehend them to allow their other allies to charge through unfazed.
Peridot observed a large metal panel on the ground from a fallen ship and a group of Outriders charging at her. She extends her hands in an attempt to lift the panel. It quivered but didn't budge. "C'mon, lift!" Peridot huffs as she strained with her powers. Garnet saw what she was trying to do. She manually picks up the panel and props it up, "Hold it there," Garnet commanded as she let go. It wobbles, but Peridot is able to keep it upright. Garnet let herself have a running start before she punched the panel with both gauntlets. The panel rips itself from the ground and plows through the battlefield, taking a huge column of enemies with it. The feat did not go unnoticed.
“Guys, I’ve got three bogeys at the front,” Sam says as he observes the three gems from his position in the sky. Not only were they wildly different from the invaders, but they were also fighting them.
Natasha saw who he was talking about, “I got a visual too,” she confirms. She and Okoye had just cleared a wall of Outriders a bit aways from the gems and had a moment to breathe. It wouldn’t last long, though. Still, they observe their colorful allies.
“Friend or foe?...” She trails off.
Okoye didn’t reply at first. Garnet leaps over a swing of one Outrider and lands on the other side of it. Before the creature could turn around, she punches it several times in rapid succession when it finally retaliated. She caught its arm as it was thrust at her and throws the alien over her shoulder. It lands into another Outrider and brings both of them down.
Okoye smiles microscopically in approval, “The enemy of our enemy is our friend.” Natasha nods, “Stay sharp out there, we got new allies,” she says into the commlink. She turns to Okoye, “Wanna give them a hand?” Okoye nods and they run down to join up with them.
At one point, Peridot jumped to avoid a blast and ended up on the back of one of the Outriders. It didn't seem to notice her as it charged along. "Get me off this thing!" She cries. It stopped short as a launched spear pierced its head which caused Peridot to be thrown off of it. Okoye promptly retrieves her spear.
"Thanks," Peridot says as she gets up and dusts herself off, though there was a hint of sarcasm in her voice.
Garnet and Amethyst fight side by side, a whip cracking out to pull an enemy down, a well-placed punch to send one reeling. Garnet goes to hit another but some energy hit it first before sending electricity through it. It howls in agony before falling along with the rest. Garnet turned to see the source of the shot to be from a blonde human in a black jumpsuit; Natasha.
Garnet had no time for introductions, as more and more Outriders replaced the ones they'd taken down. She launches into an uppercut that sent two flying. Okoye took the opportunity to launch her spear again, nailing both in the strike. Garnet was able to yank the weapon from their bodies to hand it back to the Wakandian general.
"To whom do I owe the pleasure of this battle?" Okoye asked the strange ally after they fended off a few more of the invaders.
"Garnet," she replied simply. Garnet was never one to normally indulge in conversation, but there was unspoken solidarity between the two warriors. A wall of enemies form to attack them, but Garnet places her gauntlets in front of her and clicks them together. They launch from her arms like rockets and hit the brigade with mighty force before dissipating. Garnet promptly summons a new pair to continue fighting. Okoye was both grateful and impressed by the move.
The ground begins to rumble and Peridot spots a Tresher heading right towards them. It tore through the Earth and even swallowed Outriders with it. "Incoming!" She calls out, feebly attempting to move it out of the way with her ferrokinesis. Red energy engulfs the large, devastating piece of machinery instead as Wanda descends to join the fight. With great effort, she is able to lift it off the ground and toss it away, taking out dozens of Outriders with it. Okoye huffs in disbelief, "Why was she up there all this time?"
With another temporary pause in the battle, Garnet turns to regard her new allies but notices someone missing. "Where's Amethyst?" She says quickly to Peridot. Her question was soon answered for her, as Amethyst came by hanging onto a small Outrider ship as it zipped through the air. She had apparently tried to drag it down with her whip but was unsuccessful.
"Come on, we have to go get 'er," Garnet says to Peridot. "Right behind you," she replies, standing on a small piece of metal debris and levitating it as she did with a trash can lid sometimes to get around.
"Well, they were… interesting," Natasha comments as the three gems went wayward down the battlefield. Soon, however, they were warned by Sam that Vision was in trouble.
Meanwhile, Garnet gave great chase to the fleeting ship, using charging Outriders as stepping stones to her goal. Once she was close enough, she leaps up and catches the ship before hoisting herself up. She helps Amethyst up too, who had been swinging behind the ship.
Peridot soon catches up and hops off the piece of metal she’d been floating on. “Really Amethyst?” she huffs. “I was just trying to take this hunk of junk down!” She insists, “Besides, we can just hop off.”
Garnet shakes her head, “If we get off now, we’ll be surrounded,” she reasons. It was true; the ship was cruising deeper and deeper into the Outrider charge, to the source of the brigade itself.
“Then we can hijack the ship!” Peridot suggests. Without further hesitation, Garnet began to punch her way into what seemed to be the cockpit. Soon she breaks through, grabs the Outrider, and tosses it out. Peridot was quick to jump in to assume control of the ship. Garnet and Amethyst held on tightly as the ship swayed, but eventually Peridot—being an engineer—figured out the basic controls. The ship continues towards the main dropship.
“It’s not letting me turn it around!” She says worriedly.
“Garnet…” Amethyst trails off, pulling her attention away from the frazzled green gem. She was pointing to a spot where a huge surge of energy was coming from. Suddenly, streaks of color mark the sky as four objects flew away from Earth.
“What was that?” Peridot comments. Garnet had no answer.
Further and further they were taken away from Earth, and now it seemed the whole Outrider army was following suit.
Amethyst and Peridot look to Garnet with an unspoken question, How are we getting back home? There was a moment of silence.
“We have to stick together for now. This fight isn’t over, and we’ll reunite with the others soon enough,” Garnet says solemnly. The other two gems didn’t interject, for it was all they could truly do.

Why doesn’t that guy’s mustache match his hair?
Sun’s looking real low there, boys.
Ahh, Goliath. How I have missed you, big guy! And that voice. A+ voice.
So, kid' show. Remember. I don’t even know how many of these people are dead now. At least a few have fallen to their deaths. In the first episode. Cause in Gargoyles, shit like this happens.
Royal bitch lady and even the soldiers griping about the Gargoyles. Bitch, please. Ya’ll owe them so much. Beasts? Beasts in the dining hall? Jeez, don’t be an ass. Ugggh. Those assholes.
I’m sitting here on Demona’s side. And not anymore. Not down with the bowing. Goliath being reasonable. Good guy Goliath. Such a sweetie, such a good guy. I’m so, so sorry for what he’ll have to go through soon.
Seriously. Goliath’s voice. Goddamn. Goddamn!
Okay, that mom was rude but you don’t need to be making matters worse by scaring the bitch-ass peasants.
Ugh. Okay, so I don’t like that it’s Vikings coming to attack (cause I like Vikings) but this is just all a human problem. This cowardace, betrayal... Uggggh. And the poor innocents who have to pay. The children and the Gargoyles. And so many defenseless Gargoyles murdered.
I remind you, this is a kid’s show.
Part 2
Ahhh, I’ve gotten how much I loved the opening music for this. Such an epic theme! Hyping me up for the upcoming adventure!
I don’t blame them for wanting revenge. I’d want revenge too.
Of course they’d follow for revenge, you dumbass! You didn’t kill all of them.
Ugggh. The Magus blaming the Gargoyles for the princess being killed. Even though they didn’t do it. Oh man, this curse. It’s not their fault, you assfart. And the princess still lives!
Mad props to Goliath for saving the Princess who was a bitch. Also mad props to the princess for realising the Gargoyles were not the beasts she thought. Ahhh. My heart though. Goliath choosing to be spelled rather than be alone. (Although honestly, he could’ve just waited until the eggs in the rookery hatched and then he wouldn’t be alone cause he could raise them.
Bitch just legit ran all the way inside and up the stairs. So excited to see Goliath. Makes it clear from the start that Xanatos is extra AF.
“Pay a man enough and he’ll walk barefoot into hell.”
Seriously, how much money does this motherfucker have? Cause he’s paying to buy a castle and paying everything to take at least some chunks of it and affix it on top of his skyscraper.
And the curse is broken! Woo! Their reaction to the city though. A+.
Xanatos, you extra mother fucker.
Oh, the eggs are gone. RIP. Although it has been 1000 years...
I’m just shaking my head at this entire fight.
LOL. “These weapons. We must be fighting sorcerers!”
Oh, and now we’re seeing what lead to the beginning of the first episode. Hello Elisa.
No, Goliath. Don’t trust Xanatos. Oh no, wait, trust humans. Just not that one.
Part Thre?e
Seriously though, how were girls supposed to watch this show without getting a crush on Goliath? Just saying.
And hell, Elisa. Elisa’s a babe too. Can we talk about her? How she’s smart, brave, and awesome. A badass babe who’s a damn good detective with a lovely heart. And she’s a POC! And a main character! Legit, she’s African/Native American. She was always meant to be a POC. Originally they had her as Hispanic, but when they cast her voice actress they changed Elisa to match. And this in a show that came out in 94!
So Elisa just met Goliath during all the time that I was babbling about Elisa.
Dude, I don’t do heights so I can’t blame her one bit for clinging.
Ahh, these two. “A good detective trusts no one.” “That much we have in common.” You say that, you both say that. But nahhh, you’re cinnamon rolls underneath all that distrust.
Floppy! That’s a floppy! AHH. VHS!
Hi Demona. Think I didn’t recognise you in those shadows there?
This show is sometimes really pretty.
“Stay outta sight.” Solid advice that will quickly be forgotten.
AHH. Just scooped her up! And that smile. AHH. Bridal style. Ahhhh.
Gods, this music. XD
Meanwhile, back at the castle. The newly named Hudson is walking around with their pouty pupper. And getting startled by rock’n’roll.
Jesus lady. A car with a carphone in 94? 40 grand... You’re talking like he brought it from some junkyard.
Meanwhile, the other three are blowing up some guy’s motorbike.
Oh, well. Who knew a single tranq dart would be enough to take down a Gargoyle. Or did they get him a few more times after that. I don’t know.
Part 4
Dunnnn, dun dun dun dun dunnnnnn!
There’s my girl, kicking some ass! They underestimated her. Also they don’t know how to aim.
Oh god, don’t try calling a taxi. That won’t end well. Yup, there he goes.
Yup, just a single tranq dart. Just one. Just now taken off. And a tracker.
Elisa the beast whisperer. Taming wild dogs long enough to put the tracker on him. Smart girl.
Hudson and puppers are getting used to the idea of television. Oh, I saw The Lion King for a second there. I see what you did there Disney.
And Elisa now knows he turns to stone during the day. Brave girl, catching their eye and leading them away. You know she’s gotta be exhausted. It’s been a long night for her and yet she’s still being a champion. Gods, I love her.
Again, their aim is rubbish while hers is on point. Go Elisa! <3
That lighting though, when the blond baddie stepped over the crack. Ahhhh.
Also what part of New York city is this that has a dock and a waterfall?
This guy is an idiot. Again, underestimating my girl.
Moment of awe and respect for Elisa. Leading those jackasses away, risking her life, and then returning to guard Goliath! <3
Brooklyn! Broadway! Lexington! Ahhh, my precious boys! And let’s not forget our adorable Bronx! <3
And NOW. NOW he reveals that Demona’s there. Insert gasp of shock from Goliath. And sinister look from Demona, a character who was never very good. And full of bullshit. Yeah, sure. He acquired her for his private collection, but she implied she asked to be cursed by the magus to be with them. AHH Goliath, you’re still in wuv with the bitch.
Ugggh, Goliath, sweetie. She’s no good.
Of course the Elevator is different. You’re looking at the mechanics that pull it up and down, not the one people ride in. Such a good detail there.
Part 5
FLOPPY ACQUIRED.
I feel bad for all the frightened scientists in that building. Jeez, imagine their nightmares after that.
Talk of monsters, you say? As if your people haven’t fought them before, eh? It almost smacks of a miscommunication. Of course, the defenders dressing differently from the attackers don’t seem to register to the Gargoyles. Then again, they have yet to see a reason not to trust Demona and Xanatos. Poor darlings.
Second floppy acquired.
NYOOM.
And now for Goliath and Demon to complete their mission... Success, but of course Demona fucks up their poor ship because she gives no shits about the well-being of humans. Splash. At least they had a softish landing in the water. Some of them should’ve survived. Most probably died.
Again, this is a kid’s show.
Ahhh, that hate. Hating all the humans for the sins of a few who are long gone.
Ahhh, the truth comes out! The attackers are from Xanatos’ company. No one had stolen anything from him. He sent them after disks that didn’t belong to him! Gasp! He used them from the beginning! Colour me shocked! (Which I’m not, of course.) And of course Demona’s in on it.
Dudeee, the Goliath bots. I forget what they’re called. But goddamn are they cool.
That isn’t a very sturdy bot, Xanatos. Should’ve made them more impact resistant.
I’d ask why he bothered with waking up Goliath and his friends to begin with, but it’s more cost effective to have a self-healing attack dog than a robotic one. Obviously he was hoping he’d get the actual Gargoyles on his side, expecting them to play nice - which he did very well except with Goliath himself.
Ah, Demona with a rocket launcher.
Ahhh, the reveal. Demona had betrayed them along with the captain. Tsk tsk. And now everyone hears it.
Elisa to the rescue! Woo!
Oh no, they both fell! And Demona’s wings got hit! And Goliath caught Elisa, but not Demona who fell out of view. Bye bitch. See ya later.
And Xanatos has been arrested. I don’t recall how long that lasts.
“Good, maybe we’ll catch a Giants game.” “Giants?” Ahahaha, he has no idea what she’s talking about and it’s precious.

Planet of the Ood (Doctor Who S04E03)
Today Jon is forced to watch and recap “Planet of the Ood”, the third episode of Doctor Who’s fourth series. This episode is going to bring back some friendly, squiddy faces, but will their return leave Jon feeling vindicated or suppressed?
Keep reading to find out…
Great job on your latest recap, Eli! I never really noticed before we started this project how many episodes are centered on Blanche, but it’s been a lot of fun to get your take on that! I agree that it would have been fun to actually see Rose’s documentary, but given how quick the production schedule was when the show was being made I’m willing to give them a pass. The next episode has a surprise celebrity cameo, so I can’t wait to get your reaction on that!
But first things first, we’ve got an episode of Who to get through!
Episode directed by Graeme Harper and written by Keith Temple
Today’s episode opens with an advertisement for personal Ood, the race of aliens which we met all the way back in “The Impossible Planet”. In case you forgot, the human race has enslaved the Ood, and is now selling them for fifty credits a pop. Mr. Bartle, a manager on the Ood homeworld (known as the Ood Sphere), is reviewing the ad when the Ood working with him begins to act up. The Ood’s eyes glow red and they kill Bartle with their translation orb.
Onto the opening credits!
Donna and the Doctor are rockin’ around the TARDIS and having a grand old time. The Doctor’s hit the randomize button, meaning Donna’s about to step out onto her first alien planet without either of them having any clue about where they are. Donna is psyched! Until she steps out into a tundra and begins to freeze in her sleeveless get up. The view is beautiful, but she’s way too cold to enjoy it. She runs back into the TARDIS and changed into a parka she brought with her. Way to plan ahead, D! A rocket flies overhead and an eager Donna runs off to see where it landed.
Where it landed, it turns out, is Ood Operations HQ. Apparently there’s been some sort on incident, and Klineman Halpen, Chief Executive of Ood Operations, has come to investigate. He’s met by Dr. Ryder, who keeps tabs on the health of the Ood, and Solana Mercurio, Head of Marketing and Galactic Liaison for the company. There have been four deaths at the facility, but until the attack on Bartle was caught on tape they were all attributed to natural causes. Halpen is aware that the eyes of the Ood sometimes grow red, and that it’s a bad thing when that happens. Ryder attributes this to a bacterial infection, and I guess he doesn’t know about the thing with the devil that happened a while back? Anyway, the Ood who killed Bartle made a break for it and was shot by a guard, so they’re presumed dead. Halpen gets a shot of hair tonic from his personal Ood; he had a full head of hair a few years back, but stress is taking its toll.
Donna and the Doctor are frolicking through the snow of the Ood Sphere when the Doc begins to hear a song. They come across the Ood that killed Bartle, now dying from their wounds. Donna comforts the dying Ood, designated Ood Delta 50, while the Doc does his best to tend to him medically. Delta 50 tells them that that the circle must be broke, but then their eyes turn red and they growl at Donna and the Doc. They die before they can do any harm, and the Doc tells Donna about the Ood. He still thinks of them as servants, not slaves, and we learn that the song the Doctor hears was Delta 50 crying out telepathically. Donna didn’t hear the song for some reason and has no idea what the Doc is talking about. The Doc remembers that bad things happen when Ood eyes turn red, though, and he knows trouble’s afoot.
He and Donna reach Ood Operations (or OO for short) HQ just as a group of potential investors arrive. A flash of the psychic paper later they’re set to join the tour, before they even make it into the building a siren begins to blare. Kess, head of security for the facility, says that another Ood has gone red eyed and is currently being pursued. Mercurio sells the investors a line about the Ood being happy to serve and how well they’re taken care of as the red-eyed Ood is chased down by Kess. Mercurio then moves on to show off the new vocal options they’ve added to the Ood. The Doc gets into the OO computer and Donna realized she’s in the year 4126. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire is in full swing and spans three galaxies. Donna’s surprised for a couple of reasons; no one in her day expects the human race to last much longer, what with global warming and all those bees disappearing, but look at us now! She’s not sure all this is necessarily good, though. Is humanity just a virus spreading across the universe at this point? She’s also a little miffed that the Ood are being sent across three galaxies without anyone giving them a say. Finally! Someone seems concerned with the whole slave race thing!
Donna goes to a nearby Ood and asks them if there are any Ood living out in the wild, free of human interference. The Ood says they were made to serve, but Donna points out that the species couldn’t have always been that way. The more she asks questions the more distraught the Ood seems to become, until they finally mention something about the circle. Before the Doc can find out what this circle is, Mercurio is moving the tour along. The Doctor decides it’s time for him and Donna to take a little detour, though. Meanwhile, the now rabid red-eyed Ood is examined by Dr. Ryder and Halpen. Ryder doesn’t have any answers, and neither does Ood Sigma, Halpen’s personal Ood. Ryder says the only thing he hasn’t checked out is in Warehouse 15. Halpen says whatever is in there has been quiet for the last 200 years, but he’s willing to let Ryder check it out. He has the rabid Ood executed before leaving for Warehouse 15.
Donna and the Doctor begin snooping around and see a platoon of Ood being marched out to work. One stumbles and is whipped mercilessly by Kess. Donna declares that the Ood are in fact slaves, and the Doctor realizes that he never thought to ask any questions the last time he met them. He also had to let a bunch of Ood die last time, so now he feels he owes them one. Time for a little revolution! They catch sight of Halpen, Ryder and Ood Sigma making their way into Warehouse 15 and make themselves scarce. We don’t get to see whatever’s inside the warehouse, but Ryder is blown away by it. Halpen sarcastically refers to it as Sigma’s daddy, and Mercurio finally realizes that Donna and the Doctor aren’t who they say they are and Halpen orders her to find them.
Speaking of, the pair enters into a different warehouse full of shipping containers. The containers are all packed full of Ood. The Doc opens one up and Donna tries to explain to the Ood that they can just run for it and be free, but they say they don’t understand the concept of freedom. The Doctor asks about the circle, and the entire pack of Ood reply that the circle must be broken. The circle must be broken, you see, so that the Ood can sing. Kess has discovered our heroes and lets out an alarm, causing them to run for it. Donna is captured and thrown in a container with some Ood while Kess decides to deal with the Doctor personally. He comes after the Doc with the giant mechanical claw used for moving the containers while the Ood Donna’s locked up with reveal that they’ve got red eyes. The Doc’s nearly killed by the claw, but Mercurio arrives in time to stop Kess. The Ood advance upon Donna, but Kess’ men let her out before she can be harmed. The Ood swarm out and begin to kill Kess’ men, giving Donna and the Doctor time to make a break for it. Mercurio follows after them as more and more containers open up and red-eyed Ood spill out.
Donna confronts Mercurio about the treatment of the Ood, but she says the human race knows the score here and is content with it. The Doctor wants to know how OO alters the Ood, but Mercurio says he’ll have to talk to Dr. Ryder for that. She lets the Doc know where he can find Ryder, but refuses to come with him and calls for the guards instead. After Donna and the Doc make a break for it she reports to Halpen and lets him know they’re headed for Ood Habitation. Kess lets Halpen know that the entire batch of Ood have turned red-eyed, and more and more have gone rabid. Halpen orders the entire batch to be killed while Ood Sigma looks on.
Donna and the Doctor make it to Habitation, and the Doc is overwhelmed by the singing of the Ood. He and Donna find a cage filled with unprocessed Ood who don’t have the translator orbs installed in them. Donna still can’t hear the song, but the Doc pulls a quick mindmeld to give her a sample. Donna is overwhelmed by the song of captivity and begins to break down. She asks the Doctor to take the song away while Ryder and Halpen arrive outside and begin to break in. The Doc gets into the Ood cage and convinces one of the ood to show him what they’ve all got cupped in their hands. They do, and reveal a tiny, handheld brain. The Doc explains that this is a hindbrain, a secondary brain that the Ood are naturally born with that processes memory and emotions. OO cuts the secondary brain off and implants the translators, essentially lobotomizing the Ood. Donna’s had enough of this; frolicking through space isn’t what she thought it would be, and she wants to go home.
Halpen and his men finally break in and Donna and the Doc are dragged away. Halpen accuses them of being part of Friends of the Ood, and says that before humanity arrived the Ood were just animals. He says they didn’t put up a fight when the slavery began, but Donna points out that, since they’re literally born with their brains in their hands, they’re peaceful and trusting by nature. Kess chimes in and lets Halpen know that the entire batch of Ood are going to be gassed in about 200 seconds. The Ood in the warehouse form a circle and their song spreads out, causing all of the Ood to go red-eyed. Mercurio is doing her best to get the now-drunk investors out of the facility, but none of them listen to her and the Ood begin to kill the investors. Mercurio is able to make it outside, but more and more Ood are coming and one finally corners her and kills her. Ood arrive at the warehouse, free the captive Ood and leave Kess to be gassed in their place.
Halpen’s ready to leave the planet behind and sterilize the entire Ood Sphere. The Doctor points out that a creature with a separate hindbrain and forebrain can’t exist, meaning there’s some sort of third element that they haven’t seen yet. Halpen says that’s true, but says it won’t be around much longer. Halpen dismisses Ood Sigma instead of killing them, praising them for their loyalty and showing some signs of affection for them. The handcuffed Donna and Doctor are unable to get free as a trio of Ood arrives to kill them. They start crying out that the circle must be broken, and the unprocessed Ood below hear them and stop the red-eyed Ood from killing the human and the Time Lord. They’re set free and they run outside while the Doctor tries to figure out where the third element of the Ood nervous system is located. Ood Sigma finds them and leads them to Warehouse 15 while Halpen prepares to blow the entire warehouse up, killing the thing inside and all the Ood with it. Donna and the Doctor make it inside the warehouse and we see that the third element is actually a giant brain, linking all the Ood together.
Halpen finds them and pulls a gun on them, revealing that the giant brain was found under a glacier hundreds of years ago. A dampening field, made up of a circle of pylons, was placed around it and has stopped the Ood from properly connecting with each other for centuries. It’s taken hundreds of years, but the brain has begun to adapt to the dampening field which is why the Ood have begun to rebel now. Ryder reveals that he’s had a hand in this as well; he’s a part of Friends of the Ood, and he’s lowered the dampening field to its bare minimum. Halpen prepares to shoot Donna and the Doctor, but he begins to convulse. He thinks Ood Sigma has been poisoning him, but Sigma says they replaced his hair tonic with Ood graft. More and more of Halpen’s hair falls out, and he begins to hear the Ood’s song. His scalp splits open and tentacles begin to erupt from his mouth. Halpen has been transformed into an Ood. Sigma announces that Halpen has become Ood-kind, and the Ood will now take care of him.
The Doctor cancels the detonation and breaks the circle around the brain, letting out the Ood song. It’s so powerful now that Donna can hear it as well, and Ood all over the Ood Sphere join together to sing. The Doctor says the song has spread out all across the Human Empire, and all of the Ood are heading back to the Ood Sphere. Ood Sigma invites Donna and the Doctor to stay on the Ood Sphere, but the Doc declines. Donna says she no longer wants to stop traveling with the Doc. Sigma tells them that the Ood will never forget Doctor Donna, and that they will always live in the song of the Ood.
The End
~~~~~
I’ve got to say, I feel pretty vindicated right now! I was honestly horrified by the idea of the Ood as a slave race and the Doctor’s reaction (or lack thereof) to them when they were introduced, and it’s great to finally have that addressed. This was another emotional episode for Donna, and Catherine Tate did another great job of carrying that load. I really enjoyed learning more about how the Ood work naturally, and I hope we get to see how free Ood society develops from here.
I give “Planet of the Ood” QQQQ on the Five Q Scale.
Be sure to stop by again on Tuesday when Eli will get a brief education in the next episode of The Golden Girls, “Dorothy’s Prized Pupil”, and then I’ll be back on Wednesday to recap the next episode of Doctor Who: “The Sontaran Stratagem”.
Until then, thanks for reading, thanks for liberating and thanks for being One of Us!
""Can i get my medical insurance to pay for surgery to correct a covered surgery, if coverage lapsed meantime?""
In 2008 I had insurance in California, through my employer. I got laid off in June, but was on COBRA in Sept. 2008, when Blue Cross authorized me for gastric bypass surgery. In Oct 2009, owing to a dispute over COBRA payments, my insurance lapsed. As of Nov 1 I have no coverage, and new insurance through my wife's Kaiser won't start until Jan 1. Yesterday (Dec 23 09) I had to go to the ER due to abdominal pain that turned out to be a complication of the 2008 gastric bypass. Last night I had a CT scan and emergency surgery to correct the problem. Blue Cross rejected the claim, which of course makes sense and pushing it through was just a formality anyway. But today I wondered if, since the procedure was covered originally, would surgery to correct a complication be covered by law even if my insurance lapsed? I know I'm grasping at straws here, but it seems like it might be worth a consultation with an attorney to find out. I think this surgery is going to run to $40K or more. It was a simple laproscopic procedure, but y'know nothing's cheap. The original bypass was billed to Blue Cross at $38K. I know it's not like defect liability, since a surgeon can't guarantee there will not be complications. Also, I know I can't expect free legal advice here. So I've had my license since I was 18 and now I'm 21, my boyfriend has always just let me use vehicles that he would give me that are registered in his name and on his insurance and I already know someone is going to point out its a bad idea I don't have my own vehicle, we have been together 5 years and haven't had a problem, but recently when I was driving my truck, registered and insured by him, some senile old woman pulled out around 8 feet in front of me and stopped right in the middle of the road so her whole car was right in my lane and the back end of her car was still sort of on the road she was pulling out of, I slammed on my breaks and when I realized I wasn't stopping I turned my wheel as hard as I could so I didn't hit her and I ended up just catching the end of her car and totalled mine by hitting the stop sign and about 4 trees on the road she was coming out of because of the fact that I was driving my boyfriend's insured vehicle and me and him live together, his insurance automatically added me to his policy which caused it to sky rocket from $190/mo. to over $400/mo. I was wondering if he should try to switch companies, or just keep me on his insurance whether he switches or not ?""
Is it legal for a car insurance company to do this?
I was in a no-fault wreck on Christmas Eve(slid into two cars on ice). The damages were about $3500 to my car. A buff job for the first car, and a chrome polish on the bumper of the old truck. They are not worried about making an insurance claim. There are not enough damages. First off, my car is fully insured with Progressive on my mother-in-laws insurance. The car is in mine and my spouse's name. I am not on the insurance because it was not allowing my mother-in-law to add me. It kept giving her an error. She was however able to add my spouse. I received a call on Saturday from a claims specialist. They told me that because I am not on the insurance, they may not cover the repairs. They are looking into whether or not she in fact did try to add me. If they can't find that she did try to add me, they said they will not cover it. Shouldn't they pay for it no matter what. Seeing how the car has comp. and collision? This is the first time I've had to deal with a claim on the insurance, so I really don't know anything about the process. I'm going in blindfolded. Everyone I've talked to has said that it doesn't matter who is driving it, if the car is insured, it's the insurance companies responsibility to cover the costs. It would be no different than you letting your neighbor borrow your car. Am I wrong??? If you have any comments or advice, please help me out. I need something to go off to work with them! Or more like against them. Thank you!""
Please don't just say things like pass your test first as I really am interested to see an estimate on how much I will be paying Also, if it is not illegal, should I put a false name and address on too, or is that part illegal while the date of birth bit it. Weird health insurance situation?
My hubby had two claims from a sleep study clinic that were marked as Out of network by my insurance. As such, the insurance company cut me a check for the portion of the bill that they are required to pay (instead of paying the clinic directly). I had to cash them immediately or else the checks would be void. Normally, we get a bill from the clinic with our total bill (including what the insurance needed to pay) and we then pay what the insurance wrote us a check for in addition to our portion. Now, the clinic has decided to write off what was marked as out of network. So, I have the money and nowhere to pay it. Is it ethical/legal for me to just keep it? It feels really wrong...""
S01E43 Pokemon Catch-Up: “The March of the Exeggutor Squad”
I’m not sure if we can top episode 35, the banned episode, but we will continue to carry on with our Pokemon Catch-Up! We will be, yet again, following the Pokemon Fast Track Viewing List, a list of only the most important Pokemon episodes. The episode number for this episode varies but generally speaking, it’s either episode 43 from the full list, or episode 40 in the US release (also Netflix).
This week, we get to witness something a little different than our last episodes. No new Pokemon will be caught, and Ash will earn no new badge. So why is this episode on the list? We’ll see!
Today’s Episode: Season 1 (Indigo League), Episode 43: “The March of the Exeggutor Squad”
Synopsis
The scene opens to Ash and his friends enjoying a carnival in some unnamed town.
Ash and Brock agree to “really party” and put on silly costumes whilst awkwardly dancing in the crowd. Misty decides to split from the group and ride on a Rapidash Merry-Go-Round. As she rounds a corner, she hears a woman demanding a man with exeggcute pay what he owes her. He pleads with her but she does not relent. In fact, she just gets angrier.
She hits him and the man falls flat on his back. Misty comes up to him and he asks her for help, well, kind of guilts her into it. He gets super-creepy and then he asks her to be his assistant to a magician named Melvin. He performs a few small tricks and shares his dream of having a Las Vegas show room. Misty reluctantly agrees and we’re carried off to see the Melvin’s show.
Misty, Exeggcute, and Melvin are in an auditorium and while Melvin is introducing his show, Brock and Ash spot their friend from the (mostly empty) seats. Pikachu is excited to be part of the show while Misty is embarassed to be on stage.
Melvin introduces Exeggcute and starts to Juggle the individual “heads”. The crowd starts to call out how boring that is and how they want to see magic. Melvin promises “real magic”. Pikachu electrifies Melvin’s staff and it shoots out flamethrower fire everywhere. The crowd is amazed, for sure, but he almost hits several of the audience members and then sets off the sprinklers. The crowd demands money back.
Outside of the tents, Melvin gets fired. Misty tries to comfort Melvin. When the magician talks about giving up on his dreams, Ash gives the man a pep talk. Even Misty agrees and commends Ash for giving the right advice.
Quick side note: I noticed that in this episode that the group’s dynamic is really starting to shine through. Maybe it was visible before but there is some great subtext here especially between Ash and Misty. You can really tell that the two care for each other but as far as I know, Pokemon never explores a possible romantic side of their relationship. We’ll, however, see hints of this possibility time and time again. She travels as part of the group until Johto and I’m sad to say that she hasn’t reappeared in the newer seasons. If you’re a fan of Doctor Who, this kind of thing will feel rather familiar.
Anyways, back to the show!
Jessie, James, and Meowth are floating on their Meowth balloon, surveying what the “twerps” are up to. Jessie and James are using the top of the balloon for tanning.
They quickly hint at a scheme and we get back to Melvin.
Melvin tries to show off a new trick but it quickly fails. He feels rather down but Ash promises to put on a magic show of his own. He puts on a costume and brings out a box. Apparently, he can make water, fire, or anything appear out of his box.
He taps a hole in the box and a column of flame shoots out at Melvin. While burnt to a crisp, he claps excitedly. Then water comes out. And we find out that Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur are inside of the box. All is fine until Charmander’s tail fire burns Squirtle who bumps his head on the top of the box. Charmander moves his tail and burns Bulbasaur. The three start to fight and all goes wrong.
The group cleans up from the mess. Ash remarks that Melvin only has Exeggcute and they can’t do anything. Except…they hypnotize Ash! Melvin notices it and tells Ash to run around in a circle and act like Bulbasaur.
Ash complies. Melvin uses Ash to pull his cart into a forest, using the hypnosis. Why Misty or Brock didn’t stop them is beyond me. Misty and Brock follow their tracks, unable to understand why Ash went with Melvin. They figure out that Ash was under hypnosis.
Meanwhile, Jessie and James follow the magician via their balloon.
Melvin uses Ash to tell him about Exeggcutor they find in the forest. He commands Ash to use his Pokemon to weaken Exeggcutor which Melvin then captures. In just a few minutes, Melvin fills up his cart with a herd of Exeggcutor.
Melvin releases all of them afterward and surveys them. He plans to put everyone in the carnival under Hypnosis and force them to go to his shows. But before he does anything, Team Rocket finally show up and they mean business. They’re dressed in show clothes and even Melvin is impressed.
Meowth rolls in a box that Jessie and James enter, he covers it with a sheet and when he takes the sheet off, the Team Rocket duo is gone, back to their balloon…Only to jump back down again. They immediately start putting Melvin down for his shoddy magician skills and start to make their claim over the Exeggcutor. Melvin’s Exeggcute jump to the rescue and evolve into Exeggcutor.
It uses Hypnosis and the other Exeggcutor do the same, putting Team Rocket into a trance. The Exeggcutor stampede off and nearly run Misty and Brock down. Team Rocket joins the forest of Exeggcutor.
Pikachu uses a Thundershock to wake Ash up from its Hypnosis.
It turns out, as Melvin explains, the Exeggcutor used Hypnosis not only on Team Rocket but on each other and now they’re headed for the carnival! On top of that, they’re beyond Melvin’s control!
The living forest enters the town and people run off screaming. The entire carnival is in ruins by the time Ash and his friends get there. Melvin’s former boss tells them to leave because he left a bomb under the field to blow them up. Like, wow. The Exeggcutor stampede through and turn back around to cause more devastation.
Ash is determined to stop them so he calls out all of his starters. Squirtle’s water attacks rejuvenate Exeggcutor while Bulbasaur’s Razor Leaf gives them a neat haircut. Ash calls them back. Charmander uses Flamethrower and burns the Exeggcutor and that wakes the Pokemon up from the Hypnosis.
Charmander uses a “rapid fire Flamethrower attack” which I can only surmise to be a Flamethrower done over and over again.
The Exeggcutor wake up one by one, slightly charred. Unfortunately, Charmander runs out of energy. Misty turns to Melvin and prompts him to use his magic to wake up the attacking Pokemon. He takes quite a bit of convincing but eventually, he agrees to do it.
He uses his staff and alongside Charmander, they hit every Exeggcutor in the group. The Exeggcutor wake up and turn back around to go home. All except one. Melvin’s Exeggcutor.
The bomb goes off just a few seconds later.
By now, you might be wondering, “Why is this episode on the Fast Track Viewing List?”. Well, it’s because of what happens next. Due to defeating so many Exeggcutor, Charmander gains enough experience to start glowing and evolve!
It evolved into Charmeleon! Ash congratulates. The group leaves Melvin behind and wish him good luck. And that’s it!
This episode wasn’t the best but it certainly wasn’t the worst. I’ll say that I was a little disappointed to see Charmander evolve at the end as if it was an afterthought rather than a major plot point in the series. We get a bit of a preview of how Charmeleon and Ash will get along when Ash hugs the Pokemon and gets a shot of Flamethrower to his ear.
I can’t wait for the next episode!
Trivia
A little light on trivia but nevertheless, here it is:
This is the first episode where a real life city is referenced (Las Vegas by Melvin)
Melvin keeps all of his Exeggcutors about him despite the 6 Pokemon limit
In the original, Melvin wanted to make it to Broadway, not Las Vegas
from S01E43 Pokemon Catch-Up: “The March of the Exeggutor Squad”
