Chapter 15: The Rebellion of Ostia (Section 5)
*Note: The 1st 13 chapters are FE7's novelization.
Next to Castle Ostia’s treasure room was the changing room for the guard soldiers, where Lilina was currently kept under lock and key.
Leygance’s first thought was to throw her into the dungeon so she could not escape even in a worse case scenario, but more soldiers still supported her than he originally thought, so treating her too roughly would cause them to rebel against him. That was when he decided to keep her in a room close to the throne room, so he could use her as a hostage as soon as things went south.
He assumed the soldiers must use it, as inside was a simple table with a set of chairs, and along the walls were several candles.
The chairs were also plain, having no decorations on them. Lilina was currently sitting in one of them, blaming herself for her own ignorance. “If… what Barth said is true, then…”
Several days ago, when the castle received the news that the Lycian Army was losing the battle at Araphen, Barth snuck into the room to tell her as well.
“I don’t know the details, but word is going around that Sir Leygance is plotting something. Lady Lilina, please be careful.”
Ostia employed several spies, people who worked from the shadows to gather intel and sabotage their enemies. Barth was close friends with one of them, who shared with him rumors that Leygance was acting strangely. He then passed that information on to Lilina, who was in charge of the castle while Lord Hector was away.
But Lilina did not believe him. Rather, she could not believe him.
Ostia was united as one under her father. Though Leygance often opposed her father’s words and actions, he had vowed his loyalty to Ostia. Her thoughts were so pure that she believed there couldn’t be a divide between their retainers.
But Leygance trampled all over that belief.
The day after the castle received the news that the Lycian Army was losing the battle, as Lilina worried about her father, Leygance chained her up and announced that he surrendered to Bern’s army.
Since then, he had forced her to stay in this room, unable to do as she pleased. She was given three square meals a day, but could not go anywhere else.
The sounds of battle reached her ears just as she was starting to relax after finishing breakfast, and a guard took her dishes.
“That noise… Has a battle started inside the castle? What’s going on?” She closed her eyes and focused her senses entirely on what she could hear.
She could make out the many sounds of battle, from metal clashing violently, to screams of death, to even pillars collapsing and walls shaking.
“Has Father returned?” Because she was under such strict surveillance, Lilina had no way of knowing anything about current events. The best she could do was whisper her wishful thinking to herself.
The sounds echoing around her were coming closer and closer.
They were proof that Leygance’s enemies were putting so much pressure on him that he and his forces were retreating deeper into the castle.
‘Maybe Father really is home, and he’s driving out the rebel army!’ She thought just as the heavily locked door opened.
“Who goes there?!” Lilina whirled around to see an archer.
He had already nocked an arrow in his bow, and stared at Lilina with a stiff expression on his face, forcing himself to hold back his emotions.
She didn't remember having ever seen his face before, but she could tell that he was a low-ranking, average soldier.
“Prepare to die, Lady Lilina!” He said in a low, emotionless voice, clear that he was only doing this because it was his duty, and aimed at Lilina.
When she realized the arrowhead was pointing at her, she froze. “Did Leygance order you to do this?” She asked.
“...” The look of panic on her face made him become unable to move as well, fingers still tight around his bowstring.
Seeing the face of the lady he’d once served made his heart begin to waver and wonder if he really should kill her.
“Are you following his orders because it is what you want to do? Is your heart really telling you to kill me?”
“...”
“If you do not see me fit to be your lord, then tell me why. If I am not good enough, I will do my best to change, so please, tell me why!” She pleaded, and looked straight at him with her big, blue eyes.
Lilina wanted to know why she had been betrayed. She would much rather die knowing than not knowing. She asked not because she wanted to figure a way out of this situation alive, but because it was the decision she was making from her honest feelings in the face of death.
Hearing her words made the archer's heart thump violently in his chest. ‘You are good enough! It's me who's not good enough!’ He wanted to scream.
He didn't really want to betray her. He'd only done it because eighty percent of the soldiers left in Ostia while the marquess was away all agreed with Leygance. He lived with his elderly mother and young sister. With his father gone, he was the only person financially supporting their household. If he died, then his family would end up on the street.
Now, Lilina herself was staring at him with tears in her eyes.
The moment he realized just how much she looked like his sister waiting for him to come home, all of the strength drained from his body, and he collapsed to his knees.
“I… I… What am I doing…?! I’m so sorry, Lady Lilina!” He apologized, bowing so low his head was touching the ground, before standing back up and looking at her with fire in his eyes and saying, “I will atone for my sins! Even if it costs me my life, please take me to the Lycian Army!”
The moment the archer positioned himself to leave the room while guarding Lilina, someone appeared in the doorway, blocking their way out.
Could it be one of Leygance’s men?!
They both prepared themselves for a fight, but when LIlina got a good look at the person who appeared, her expression brightened immediately. “Gwendolyn?!”
“I’m so happy to see you safe, Lady Lilina!”
ー
Through the cooperation of the newly re-recruited Ostian archer and Gwendolyn come to rescue her, Lilina was safely able to reunite with Roy and his army.
It went without saying that Roy was overjoyed, and Bors cried tears of joy as he hugged all of the knights who fought long and hard alongside Barth, only able to keep going because of the dream that this day would come, when they would see Lilina safe again.
Now, Leygance’s forces stood no chance.
The rebel units began to flee, including those guarding the area surrounding the throne room. All that remained was the unit led personally by Leygance.
When the tightly locked door to the throne room opened, the first group to rush in was the Knights of Ostia themselves.
“Get ready to die, Sir Leygance!” The moment Gwendolyn found Leygance, she ran straight at him.
Around them, Barth and the other Knights started to fight against Leygance’s followers.
“Well well well, if it isn’t Bors’ little sister. How bold of you. You think you can kill me?” Leygance said before immediately blocking Gwendolyn’s repeated attacks with his left hand, while his right hand casually stabbed his steel lance at her.
After unleashing a chain of multiple blows all at once, she was not in a position to avoid nor shield against Leygance, and took the full brunt of his attack.
“Ahhhh!” Though she was wearing a full suit of armor, she was still a petite woman, so the force made her fly through the air.
“Gwendolyn!” Barth nearly shrieked.
The left shoulder of her armor cracked where it was hit, but she was otherwise uninjured, at least for now. However, her strength as a fresh recruit was nothing in the face of a man promoted to the title of general.
Barth tried to rush to her aid, but several soldiers stood in front of him to block his path.
Leygance watched and laughed at him as he walked up to Gwendolyn, still collapsed on her back. “This doesn’t have to end in a total loss! I’m taking as many of you as I can with me!!”
He decided that Gwendolyn would be his first victim, and raised his lance to stab her. But the moment before he lowered it, a javelin flew at him through the air with terrifying might.
Though it bounced off his chest plate, the thickest part of his armor, the impact was still so great that Leygance stumbled two, then three steps back.
“Are you alright, Gwendolyn?!”
“Big Brother!!” She sat up and saw that it was her brother who had saved her.
Because he’d fought on the front line for the entirety of the last two battles, his armor was covered in countless scratches and the blood of his enemies.
Leygance glared at him with eyes full of hate, then spat, “First the sister, now the brother! Hmph, fine! I'll send you both to hell together!”
“Leygance! How dare you take Ostia from us while we were away…!”
“It is better than perishing with our fool of a lord!!”
Bors and Leygance shouted at each other as their intense battle unfolded. They were both so equal in ferocious offense and defense that one step forward would soon turn into one step back, and neither gained any ground.
Before now, Bors would not have been able to match Leygance in strength, but he had honed his skills over the course of the many battles he fought with the Knights of Pherae.
“Grrr, you impudent fool!”
Their lances clashed ten, then twenty times.
Just when everyone thought their battle might continue on forever, Bors’ lance made a loud clang.
Starting from the base of the spearhead, its handle broke perfectly in two.
The weapon had reached its limit faster than its human wielder.
“Feh ha ha ha…! Now die!” Certain that victory was his, he prepared to execute his coup de grce, and put all of the strength in his body into one thrust of his lance.
The dry sound of metal hitting metal echoed through the air.
He pierced through Bors chestplate, but did not feel his weapon tear through flesh.
At the very last moment, Bors had grabbed the spearhead with both of his hands, and narrowly avoided a lethal blow.
As his hands became stained with his own blood, he shouted, “Now, Barth!”
“You got it!” His best friend roared back. He swept away the common soldiers blocking his path with one magnificent swing of his lance, then closed in on Leygance with the great force of a bear making the earth tremble as it ran.
“You have disgraced the Knights of Ostia! Repent your sins to Lord Hector when you get to hell!!” He threw his entire body into a sharp lunge of his lance.
With Bors in the way of his new target, there was nothing Leygance could do. “Gah… Curse you… all…” He growled as he furiously looked down at the lance sticking out of his abdomen.
The moment he collapsed, the remaining members of the rebel army dropped their weapons and surrendered.
The battle for Castle Ostia had started in the early morning, and that was how it finally ended as the sun reached its peak in the sky.
☆
“We finally recaptured the castle, Lilina!” Roy said, and showed his childhood friend a big smile.
They were currently in Castle Ostia’s guest room. As Leygance had kept himself stationed within it until his demise and treated it without any care, it was already in ruins even before the battle.
And so, Roy’s army chose the guest room as their base of operations, and began to carry out their post-battle duties.
Fortunately, they were able to seize the castle before Bern’s reinforcements arrived, but they knew for certain that wyvern riders would soon be here to attack. Roy ordered everyone to take turns getting some rest, then he was finally able to relax and spend time with Lilina. Though he’d been fighting day in and day out and his body had reached its limit, the sight of Lilina’s face made him forget everything.
Panicked soldiers had been running in and out of the room until just a few moments ago, but now, they were alone together.
And though Lilina spent over a week in confinement, Leygance’s treatment of her had not been particularly cruel, so her face was still full of color, and the smile she showed Roy was also full of energy. “Thank you, Roy! This is all thanks to you and your army! I’m so happy! I hope my father didn’t cause you any trouble.”
Her words made Roy freeze and realize… that she still did not know her own father had passed…
She did not realize that Roy's expression had suddenly hardened, and innocently continued to ask him, “By the way, Roy, is my father still in Araphen? I heard that the battle there was very harsh. Is it still ongoing?”
“Lilina… You weren’t told anything?”
“Huh? About what?” She stared at him with a blank expression on her face.
She clearly didn't know. He felt that he probably shouldn't tell her, as he did not want to make her sad.
He cycled between thinking that he should and shouldn’t tell her, until he decided that she would inevitably find out at some point, so she should hear everything from him.
He looked back at her and said, “...I want you to calm down and listen to me. Lord Hector… is gone.”
“Eh…?” For a moment, she was in utter shock, unable to comprehend what he’d just told her.
‘It has to be a lie. A bad joke.’ She thought, before looking back at Roy. His face reflected in her eyes was entirely serious.
As her frozen thoughts started working at their normal pace again and she processed the information, her expression shifted to convey that she was doing her best to hold something back.
“I'm sorry. By the time we arrived in Araphen, the castle was already under Bern's control…”
“... It's not your fault. …Please don't apologize.” She said, her voice shaking.
Roy’s clenched fists were also shaking as he continued. “At that point… he already had several serious wounds. If we had reached him faster, we might have been able to save him… I am too weak.”
“D-Don’t blame yourself. I-I was prepared for this… Yeah… I was prepared… I am a warrior’s daughter. He taught me that even at a time like this, I musn’t lose myself.”
“Lilina.”
“So I would have been fine if everyone told me right away and didn’t hide it. They all fret over me too much… I-I’m pretty strong… So I’ll be…” Tears formed in her eyes as beautiful as gemstones.
She looked like she was about to start sobbing any minute, but she held her tears back, even though it made her body tremble.
With her father’s passing, she would become the next marchioness. She was not just a marquess’ daughter any longer. She had to band her retainers together, and lead Ostia.
Roy saw her, bravely doing her best to hold back her grief, and hugged her tightly to his chest. “Lilina, you don’t have to be strong in front of me.”
“Roy… I… I…” Everything burst forth from within her all at once.
Her wailing echoed off the walls of the room that the two shared alone together.
In that moment, she cast aside her identity as a marquess’ daughter, and was merely a girl mourning the death of her father.
“I’m here.” Those were the only words Roy could say to her as she cried into his chest.

Larissa Weems x Reader ~ Chapter 6 Will you be Mine?
Authors Note: I tried something with this chapter, let me know if you like it.
I stir awake and notice that it’s just me under the covers. I hear the shower running in the bathroom, Larissa must be getting ready. I get up and go to her kitchenette area and start making some breakfast for us. The shower shuts off just as I finish cooking. As I plate the food I feel arms wrap around my waist and give me a gentle squeeze.
“Good morning darling” Larissa greats and kisses my head. I turn around in her arms and give her a hug.
“Good morning love, how did you sleep?” I give her a soft smile. Larissa smiles back.
“Amazing, honestly the best sleep I’ve had in forever. Thank you again for saving me back there, I am truly appreciated and owe you-“
Before Larissa finishes her sentence I cut her off, “It truly was no problem, and you do not owe me anything. I will do anything to protect those who I care deeply about, no matter the cost. Now, let’s focus on the now, grab a seat and let's have the most important meal of the day, breakfast.” With one squeeze of her hand I turn back around and finish plating the food. Larissa does as told and sits down and starts eating with a smile on her face the whole time. At this moment I knew that I would never be this happy again and I only want to be with Larissa, whatever it takes. “What would you like to do today?” I ask as I wash the dishes after we eat.
“How about we-“ and before Larissa finishes her response there is rapid knocking at her door. We both look at each other and Larissa makes her way to the door, opening it up just enough to see who is knocking on a Sunday. “Wednesday, it’s Sunday whatever it is, can it wait till tomorrow? I would really like to enjoy one day of peace.” Larissa pleads with the Addams girl.
“I need to speak with Ms. Y/L/N. I know she is here.” Wednesday gets to the point and shoves past Larissa into the room.
“Wednesday, you can not barge into my room like that” Larissa huffs out. Wednesday ignores her and comes right up to me, I can see hidden in her eyes behind her stoic expression that something serious happened. My only guess would be Enid, that something happened to Enid.
“Wednesday, what’s wrong? Is Enid okay? Did something happen?” I quickly rushed out and approached the girl. Wednesday looks down and nods. “Where is she? Let’s go” I say and make my way to the door, I hear Larissa following us as we make our way to their dorm. As soon as we enter the room I see Enid on the floor in front of her bed with her knees up to her chest. “Oh, my dear girl. What happened?” I sit by her and pull her into my side. Wednesday sits on her bed watching us and Larissa comes over and sits on Enid’s bed. I rub her back and wait for her to calm down and be ready to talk. I take a quick glance at Wednesday and can see she’s worried and looks like there is anger there as well. Soon after Enid pulls away and hands me a letter. I look and see it’s from her parents, more specifically her mom. “Do you want me to read it?” I ask gently, Enid nods her head, I give her hand a squeeze and start reading.
Enid, After much consideration I have decided to send you to that Lycian Conversion camp. It is only in the best interest of you. Also there they will also talk about who you should be with and who is appropriate for starting a family with. There is nothing you can do or say that will change my mind. Someone will pick you up at the end of the year and take you straight there.
Mom
I immediately feel rage course through my body, I understand why Wednesday has that look in her eyes now. I look up to see her looking at me and I give her a slight nod. I take a deep breath before pulling Enid in a hug one more time. I hand the letter over to Larissa so she can be clued into what is happening. After she is done reading it she has anger etched onto her face as well “Enid, I will never let anything happen to you. You are not going to that horrible place, I will not allow it. Not even over my dead body will they take you there. My dear, if it comes down to it you can come with me for the summer. If I know anything it is that Wednesday and myself will never let them take you there, we will do everything and anything we have to do. Do you understand that?” I ask her and she nods and hugs me tightly again. I look back at Wednesday and she nods again. After a few more minutes I pull away and grab her face in my hands. “Now, how about we go into the kitchen and bake some cookies?” Enid smiles and nods, I kiss the top of her head and we both stand up. “Go get freshened and we’ll head down there together.” Enid all but runs off to the bathroom. “Now, Wednesday I don’t want to hear about any mysterious deaths happening following this. I understand how you feel and I too am having those thoughts but, we need to be here for Enid and protect her in a way that won’t hurt her.” I say as I approach Wednesday, she doesn’t say anything at first but gives me a hug which I gently reciprocate.
“Thank you, Ms. Y/L/N. And I will try not to do anything other than protect Enid.” Wednesday says in an odd gentle tone, which I give a small nod to. Enid emerges from the bathroom and we all head down to the kitchen. Enid and Wednesday are in front of Larissa and I, right as we get to the kitchen Larissa gently pulls me arm. I look up at her and see the look in her eyes. I tell the girls to get everything ready and we’ll be right there.
“Larissa, are you alright my love?” I grab her hands and squeeze. She takes a deep breather and a few tears fall down her cheeks. Oh, love what’s going on?”
“I-I am just so happy you are here. You make me feel safe and I see that you make the kids feel safe as well. I’m sorry that I tried to push you away, I’m never letting you go again. Please be mine?” Larissa all but sobs out. I give her a wide smile.
“Of course my love, as long as you are mine?” I respond and Larissa smiles and leans down to give me a kiss. “Now let's not leave the girls any longer so they don’t burn the place down.” I joke and pull her into the kitchen. Wednesday looks up as we enter and immediately notices our hands together and has a subtle smirk on her face. We make the cookies and the girls take some up to their room and Larissa and I clean up and take the rest to hers. When we get to her room she goes and pulls out a bottle of wine and 2 glasses. We sit on her couch enjoying the comfortable silence, a few moments later Larissa speaks up.
“I feel as though I should let you in on the thing that has been bothering me since reading that letter.” Larissa takes a breath and I give her an encouraging smile. “I’m not quite sure how to say this. I’ve never told anyone this before, not even anyone from when I went here as a student, but here goes nothing. So when I was younger I was sent to a camp like the one Enid’s mother is trying to do. This camp though was not for my abilities but because of my sexuality. My parents convinced me and told me that it was wrong to love and be in a relationship with women. For the longest time I’ve always hidden myself and who I was afraid of what they would do. So all throughout school here and then secondary school I hid myself and only when I was able to be on my own had I allowed myself to be… well me. Soon after I started being me my parents had passed away so there was nothing holding me back. I know what it is like to go to places like that and we can not let Enid be taken there. It will only hurt her soul and it will break her. I wish that when I was younger I had someone like you in my corner to protect me from the unspeakable things they do there. Seeing you with both Enid and Wednesday today truly has opened my eyes and made me see a future with you.” Larissa tells me this with steady tears falling from her eyes and a shaky voice.
I pull her into a tight hug and say “Oh, love. I’m so sorry that you had to go through that. I wish there was a way for me to take that pain away for you. We will not let Enid be taken away to that place, that I can promise you. I can also promise you that I will protect and care for you for as long as you allow me to. You never have to hide yourself from me, my love”
Larissa pulls back “I don’t know or care if this is too early to say but, I love you Y/N” I lean in and give her a loving kiss on her lips.
“I love you Larissa”I give her another kiss and hold her for a few more minutes. “Let’s get to bed my love, it’s late” I pull away and bring her to her bed where she starts to get ready for bed and gives me a pair of clothes to change into. Just like the night before we fall asleep holding each other.

One-two-step three-four-step five-six
Step?
A sigh told him this was the wrong answer, and Raven corrected to a quick twist, tensing slightly when Miss Marcie's hands found his hips. "Needn't be so rigid, ain't gonna bite ya."
Raven was used to movement, having full command of his body. He could whip about a battlefield like a demon, menacing foes left and right before they'd gotten their trousers laced. But this was different – different even from the courtly dances that he knew, and calling upon the muscle memory for those was not the right answer, for many of those required him to be rigid.
(Or, at the very least, he was so uncomfortable doing them that he could only remember being rigid. At this point, it didn't make a difference.)
Marcie spun him off with a flourish before turning her attention on the flax-haired boy that was practicing hesitant steps along the sidelines. Raven noted that his steps were light – trained in stealth, if he wasn't mistaken. The boy's form accounted for it. Narrowing his eyes he saw the poke of a collarbone, too-thin wrists. Mostly accounted for it.
Marcie walked the boy through his paces, gracefully translating the dance in a way that accommodated for the way he already moved, and Raven couldn't help but be impressed. Her understanding of body language and forecasting was sharper than many hardened mercenaries he'd seen on the battlefield. He watched keenly the way she planted her feet, the curve of her spine and the tilt of her hips, and the way the boy followed, mirroring into his version of some Lycian dances Raven had seen in smaller towns.
“I’ll duck behind the curtain with your friend, and you can swap in. I saw you practicing, so just don’t get cold feet. Follow my lead.”
Raven heard the troupe's leader clap his hands sharply, and he cast a glance around at the other performers: confidence, control, just another day at work. Miss Marcie ushers he and the boy behind the curtain of a makeshift stage, eyeing him with some uncertainty.
"I'll need to you come out on my cue - "
Raven nodded once in affirmation.
" - and you'll need to actually put your hands on me this time." For the first time since the whole debacle began, Miss Marcie's eyes sparkled with some amusement, and he realized how absurd the whole thing was.
Just another day at work. Just another job.
He nodded again, his expression stone-serious.
This drew a laugh from Miss Marcie, and with that all of her aggravation seemed to melt away as she donned her performer's persona, bright-eyed and slick-smiled and an energy to bright and too hot for him to behold. She pressed a quick kiss to his cheek, then his partner's, and winked at them.
"For luck," she said, slinking around the curtain to the stage.
The music began so softly, so piece-meal, that Raven struggled to hear it over the buzz of conversation. But eventually the drummer played a riff that the fiddler mimicked, and the two began a conversation with their instruments, opening challenges the other responded to, joined by others in the troupe until he began to hear the soft patters and thumps of Miss Marcie's footsteps.
Now that his body wasn't so close to hers, now that there were no hands on him, no expectant, annoyed eyes bearing down on him, he could hear the pattern of her movement, knew that he had made those same steps at some point or another. Step, step, parry, swipe – hearing it now, he tensed his body somewhat, fixating his instincts on Miss Marcie, forcing himself to think of her as a threat, and when his cue came his body bolted forward.
He did not place his hands on her immediately, and he caught the sharp edge of her gaze in warning, but she canted her head just slightly at the intensity he must have been showing. She moved right, he feinted left, spun, caught her hand in his and gave her a lively twirl.
She hopped her steps, catching onto his lead this time with a wicked grin on her face and rose to meet his challenge. Marcie leaned into him and he skipped back a step, then around, mindful of where his arms moved, catching her as she tipped toward the ground. She caught onto his shoulders, hiking her legs about his waist with the momentum of their movement.
He allowed her the moment to vamp a bit for the collected crowd, who he began to notice was enraptured, hooting and howling. His face burned, both at the situation and the attention, and Marcie tapped his shoulder to indicate that she was going to release.
As one, they leapt apart from each other, and Raven fell to a crouch, poised on the balls of his feet as Marcie took a run at him. He launched up within a moment of her arrival, catching her waist and wrist and setting the two of them into a spin that swung them offstage. They might have tumbled to the ground if Raven had not had the awareness to tug her closer to him, spreading his stance into one that was more stable.
Miss Marcie nearly whooped, patting him on the shoulder to release her before turning to the boy. "Your go, then."
sketchline samba // raven + chad
lycianlynx:
Despite everything, the two of them fold like paper under the musicians’ poking and prodding. The drummer claps in delight at the older student’s assent, while the fiddler firmly pats Chad’s shoulders, sizing them up; They scowl and squirm under the scrutiny, both from the duo already accosting them and the added weight of everyone else’s gazes.
“Childhood friend o’ Millie, duh.” the fiddler responds, easy smile, casual air. He nudges the shorter boy towards the trailer. “Don’t wanna garner too much ‘ttention, now. Right that way, if y’please.”
“... Fine.” They grunt.
The trailer’s warmly lit, smells of the wood and metallic bite of various instruments, and is chock full of color from the top down. Chad likewise gets a bundle of clothing shoved into their hands, smelling fragrantly of lilies; They wrinkle their nose, first at the smell they’ll be associated with, then at how the other gets dived on, then the same hands moving to rid them of their uniform; They move faster though, shucking off what they can before anyone else can even try to touch them (they have too many knives and knicknacks hidden on them to do otherwise), only relenting when they realise they’re not quite sure how to put the costume on. At least it’s quick, the stylists and performers both experienced at quick, impersonal costumage.
The initial chaos passes, but his exposed collarbone and shoulder juts out awkwardly from where the costume intends them to do so gracefully, gangly as he is. One of the stylists frowns and drapes an extra capelet across his shoulder, and he’s shooed out of the trailer again alongside the Lion with a grimace practically plastered on his face.
He’s not up yet, the other student first receiving instruction from an increasingly irritated Marcie (though he does fall into step well enough that it isn’t a disaster), and he watches, observes along with the rest of the troupe; The delicate way Marcie lets her free hands rest, graceful arcs that snap off into quick, jingling steps. Observes how her dance partner fumbles, not unfamiliar with the act of following, but with the intricacies of it; The way the thinner fabric reveals him as an off kind of slender, like himself. The boy mimics Marcie’s stance, the steps at a slower pace; It’s not too different from what he can do, but just one rehearsal won’t be enough. The drummer spares him a whistle that he graces only with a pointed glare.
The expectations are pretty clear; Follow along as well as he can, don’t trip and eat shit and make a nuisance of himself and everyone else on stage. It’s the same as what’s been placed on the other student’s shoulders, a burden he feels guilty for placing there, now. The blond hadn’t meant to rope the other into this nonsense, it just...
Ah, the other’s released from his purgatory. Ah, fuck. Marcie beckons Chad over, auburn eyes flat and unamused, and the boy reflexively ducks away from the weight of her stare.
“There’s no time for stage fright.” she sighs, taking one of his hands, shifting her stance to one that’s more poised; He mirrors it. Her tone is just as flat, even when irritation gives way to weariness. “I’ll duck behind the curtain with your friend, and you can swap in. I saw you practicing, so just don’t get cold feet. Follow my lead.”
And she starts, and he follows; Rhythmic stomp of sandaled feet, flourish he can’t quite capture, reaching back when she reaches forth to take his hand and whirl him ‘round; Amazingly, miraculously, he keeps up, though naturally with less grace, steps more Sacaen than Lycian, shifting when he found the other rhythm for fitting. Still, Chad can’t shake the fear roiling in his gut when she lets him go, the stressed crease in her brow ever-present, and the troupe’s leader calls for final preparations.
Can they really do this?

Linus didn’t care much for history, that was more of Lloyd’s interest. Sure, as a kid it had been fun to listen to the stories of the heroes of old, and even now, he held a great pride for what those who came before had accomplished against the dragons, but it wasn’t something he found overly interesting. The Shrine of Seals was an important place in Bern, though few actually knew where it was anymore. It lay hidden among the mountains and woods, and the only reason he was here now, was to make a last stand and take revenge against the Lycian lords that were headed for the legendary weapons here.
“Legendary my ass…,” he scoffed, looking around the torch lit room with irritation. There wasn’t much here at all; just a large, stone room with minimal decoration to it. If there was really something mystical or even mildly amazing here, he sure wasn’t seeing it.
Growling in annoyance, the Mad Dog rolled his eyes and decided to hunker down in the large stone chair at the center of the room. It didn’t matter if there was something here or not, the only thing he was here for was the pathetic lives of the lordlings that were going to walk right into his ambush. Idly tapping the cross guard of his sword against the arm of the stone throne he was sitting in, Linus quickly grew bored and further frustrated at having to wait around. Sitting still wasn’t really in his forte, so it didn’t take long for him to jump back to his feet and start pacing around the chamber.
As he was making a haphazard circuit around the room, a small section of the floor seemed to depress under his boot, a clicking noise alerting him just a bit too as the entrance to the shrine suddenly closed with a great groaning of stone. The chamber was thrown into darkness for a moment, the torchlight flickering -- threatening to snuff out -- before burning steady again. It only took a moment for his vision to adjust, a string of colorful words leaving his mouth as Linus immediately attempted to budge the door open again -- and, when that failed, tried to repeat what he’d done to close the blasted thing in the first place.
“Fucking hell, really?!” Linus blusters futilely, slamming a fist against the unmoving stone door as he realized that he was well and truly stuck until his men figured out how to reopen the shrine. Huffing out an angered breath, he gives the door a good kick for being a bastard -- it didn’t help at all, but it made him feel a tiny bit better to vent his frustrations.
Time seems to drip by slowly as he waits, the crackle of the torches eventually wearing down Linus’ anger enough to make him feel almost dozy after so long of staring at the blank walls.
The unnatural sound of something squelching about in the shadows of the room jolts Linus out of the near-sleep he’d fallen into, scrambling to his feet from where he’d been sitting with his back to the stone door. Brown eyes skimmed the dark edges of the room for anything, not seeing anything at first, until something finally inches its way into the dim light of the torches. And, really, he has no idea what to call this thing other than a something -- it has no real form, the creature simply moving along the floor in a vaguely slug-like, blobby form of...whatever the hell it was made up of. It had a pastel red color to it, its form more or less translucent despite the pigment.
Well...at least this was something interesting.
“You’re a weird li’l fucker, ain’tcha?” Linus sneered, unsheathing his sword and poking the tip into at the creature that seemed to be aimlessly inching around. To his surprise, it didn’t really react; the tip of his blade sunk into the thing with hardly any resistance, and all the creature did was wobble to a stop. “Huh…,” he shrugged, figuring that poking at it wouldn’t be all that fun for very long, moving to pull his sword out of the gelatinous blob.
Only, Linus found that the little red creature was holding onto the metal with a death grip. Scowling and readjusting his hold, Linus tugged firmly at his weapon, but all this managed to accomplish was a brief suction-like noise as the blob started to move up the blade.
“What the…,” Linus breathed out in trepidation, trying several more times to free his sword of the goop that was clinging to it and steadily moving up its length with every attempt he made.
The red goo lurched forward suddenly, and Linus shuddered at the feel of it sliming over his hand. It wasn’t sticky per se, as it looked like it would feel sticky on contact, but it was cool and slick in a still intensely unpleasant way. Just like with his sword, any attempts to pull his hand out of the red goop were only met with frustration; the slime, however, seemed more energized as soon as it made contact with his skin instead of the stone of the floor or the metal of his blade, and quickly abandoned gripping onto the weapon in favor of enveloping more of Linus’ arm.
It was at this point that Linus saw the full scope of the creature he’d been poking at. What he’d initially seen was just a small section of it -- as the wet suction of the slime claimed more of his arm, the rest of the creature made itself visible from the shadows. It was massive, and the fact that he hadn’t been able to see or hear the damn thing for its size had panic creeping into the back of Linus’ mind as he struggled to get out of the thing’s hold.
“Okay, you big fucker, let go and maybe I won’t tear you apart!” Linus threatened, trying to wrench his arm free or even shift some of the mass off with his free hand. It did little good, as his fingers couldn’t get a grip on the slick surface. But, fear spiking and turning into rage, Linus continued to fight against its hold.
This didn’t deter the slime in the least, his struggling only seeming to interest the beast more than anything else as more of it started to slip over and around him. Furiously trying to gain some sort of purchase, Linus’ boots squished into more of the red goo, making it harder for him to even move now. A shiver of disgust ran down his spine as he felt the cool goo drip onto his abs and inch over his abdomen with a weirdly sentient touch -- as if it was curiously investigating him. “I swear, you go anywhere you ain’t supposed to and I’ll--!” his enraged shouting was swiftly cut off by a tendril of slime jamming its way into his open mouth. The force of it had reaction tears stinging his eyes, Linus gagging as the viscous substance filled his mouth and then forced its way down his throat. There was a long, drawn out moment of full blown panic as Linus found he couldn’t breathe; he struggled desperately, clawing and kicking at the creature as his vision swam from lack of air. Eventually, the creature seemed to understand that he needed to breathe, and eased up enough so that he could pull in ragged lungfuls of air through his nose.
Saints, he’d nearly blacked out there...And while the damned thing was learning to let him breathe before it pumped more of itself into his mouth, it was still rather eagerly streamlining itself down his throat. Working his jaw a bit, Linus let out a muffled groan of frustration when he couldn’t bite through it; soft though it felt and appeared, it was like trying to chew through a thick ball of leather. It did, however, have the odd perk of being ridiculously sweet; the bright flavor of cherries leaving a syrupy taste in his mouth.
Unable to really move or get himself free of the slime, Linus could do little more than seethe and watch as more and more of the room filled with the creature. It seemed pleased that he’d stopped fighting as much, generously pumping more cherry flavored goo into him at a pace that didn’t suffocate him. Except, a new issue cropped up when the inevitable feeling of fullness started to hit Linus.
He squirmed a bit, wincing at the stuffed feeling as his stomach churned, trying to deal with what was being shoveled into it. He huffed out an aggravated, pained breath through his nose, ramping up his struggling again when it felt like he was going to be sick from the sheer volume of goop it was trying to get in him. The red goo seemed to pause for a moment, its previous coolness melting away into a pleasant warmth. Relief struck Linus almost instantly at this, the overfull feeling in his stomach fading away as the warmth sunk in.
Relaxing a bit, Linus simply let it pick up where it left off for a while, until he felt something off…
Glancing down, his brain seemed to hit a wall when he saw the belt strapped over his chest digging in to his belly. The six pack abs he’d had just moments ago were completely gone, a soft, chubby belly having replaced it after whatever the creature had done. To make more room, it must have absorbed itself into his body -- but this wasn’t really something the human body was meant to ingest, and this was the result…
A muffled protest was all Linus could get out as the slime ramped up the pace. Every time he felt like he was going to burst from the pressure in his stomach, the creature would repeat the process of absorbing what it had pumped into him, which resulted in more weight getting added to the Mad Dog’s once muscular frame.
Frustration and indignation had slowly faded into a food drunk sort of resignation as time ticked by in the semi dark of the shrine. It was monotonous and repetitive, and the feeling of being filled to the bursting point with warm slime made it difficult to actually stay awake -- similar to the effect of eating a big meal and then needing to sleep it off. Linus’ attention narrowed down to a fine point of swallowing down the increasingly large bursts of goop that the creature was pumping into his mouth. Eyes glazed over, he barely even processes the way the slime is expanding his body anymore.
The belt that had been digging into him early on was reaching its limits; Linus’ gut growing steadily rounder as the slime fed him, the thick leather indenting harshly into the flesh the more doughy his middle got. Eventually, it was too much, and the buckle snapped, freeing his engorged belly to bounce forward and into his lap. He felt some of the slime creature squish between the underside of his gut and his chunky thighs, a muffled noise escaping him as the creature seemed to caress at his expanding bulk -- at least, as much as a boneless mass of goo could manage. It was a weird feeling, the suction of the slime against the sensitive skin of his belly, but it wasn’t altogether awful.
But, it wasn’t just his middle that had taken a hard hit; Linus’ entire frame was chubbing up just as nicely thanks to the slime.
Even without the red goo cushioning him, his ass had plumped up enough to be plenty comfortable against the hard stone beneath him. His trousers were quite tight at this point, the material struggling against his fat ass and thunder thighs. His face, while never angular, had clearly rounded out; chubby cheeks flushed red and a double chin softening his jawline. Broad shoulders and a strong back were now padded generously with pudge, smoothing out muscles into soft valleys of fat. His pecs were still holding somewhat firm, round and pert as they sat atop the growing mass of his gut. Likewise, his arms had maintained some definition, the added weight serving to mostly make them look more bulky as they stressed the sleeves of his shirt and jacket. The juicy swell of thick lovehandles rounded out his figure, not so much fighting his belly for space as much as merging with it to create a deliciously supple tire of flesh around his middle and sides.
The room glistens a shimmery red from the slime creature practically filling it up with its behemoth size, the light from the torches reflecting off of its form as it oozes around Linus. If it has an end at all, he can’t see it. All he knows is that it hasn’t let up an ounce with its feeding, a constant, thick stream of the stuff bulging out Linus’ cheeks like a fat chipmunk that had hit the jackpot of nuts; pumping its own astounding mass down into his gurgling, fattening stomach.
Time had practically ground to a stop for Linus, everything in the world seeming to have narrowed down to just encompass the massive creature as it blimped him up with itself.
He couldn’t even stifle the groan that was building up in him if he wanted to, a slick, slime covered hand clumsily smacking against the bulge of his belly as he dazedly rubbed at the swollen mass. Despite constantly and continuously being stuffed to the brim, it was incredibly soft and squishy. Chubby fingers sunk into the soft flesh with ease, and if he pressed down hard enough at certain points, Linus could feel the slime in his gut roiling about as it filled him up. Outside of the time it took to absorb itself into him -- which took mere seconds -- the creature didn’t appear to be stopping for anything, and as his body continued to fatten up and swell out with all the added weight, Linus dumbly thought it was a good thing this place wasn’t horribly small.

Hiking the Lycian Way: Saribelen - Gökçeören - Hacıoğlan Deresi (almost)
Day 2
Distance Hiked: 14km
We awoke in the grassy clearing to the sounds of munching sheep, burping goats, and tumbling rocks falling under their climbing hooves. A young shepherd was perched nearby on a rock wall. We broke-down camp while absorbing the bucolic setting, then set out on the trail. Ten minutes in, we arrived at the remote, but impressive guesthouse, Moonestone House. We were optimistic about purchasing food. Preferably a big, delicious, traditional Turkish breakfast to fuel up for the days’ hike.
At gates of the guesthouse we were greeted by a choir of friendly barking dogs. Alerted by the barking, an Iranian volunteer materialized. Disappointingly they were unable to serve us breakfast at 7:30am as they still had to finish the morning chores - feeding the dogs, the chickens, and their 30 cats. The volunteer was very apologetic and insisted he fill all of our water bottles before letting us depart. He said that if we stuck around we could have breakfast at 8:30 with the other guests.
Not wanting to delay the hike, we decided to snack on the walnuts and dried apricots we’d brought along and returned to the trail. The trail lead uphill where we crossed paths with a goat herder. He gave a wave and shouted “merhaba!” (hello). We laughed at one of his goats standing on his hind legs to eat leaves from a tree. The herding dog eyed us cautiously trying to determine if we were friend or foe.
We continued uphill and soaked up vistas of the Mediterranean Sea. We overlooked several islands and admired this new perspective of the islands we had seen daily during our stay in Kalkan. Someone had really maximized this view point by using it as a camping spot, proof provided by the stone fire-pit.
The weather was slightly cooler today with a welcomed breeze and some cloud coverage. We walked down hill into a meadow followed by the rumbling of goats hooves trotting behind us. We passed the shepard again who was retrieving water for his goats from one of the old wells on the trail. We walked through the meadow while checking frequently for trail markers. Learning from yesterday’s mistakes, we were determined not to lose the trail today.
We covered more distance on the trail before being hailed down by a villager. The kindly lady rushed towards us as fast as her knees would allow. We’ve noticed somewhat of a uniform donned by older woman in this region consisting of a patterned head scarf, brightly colored long sleeve shirt, sometimes a knit sweater. and, loose fitting floral pants. This woman also had curious red stains on her finger tips and a red circle in her palm. Reaching us, she asked, “cay” (tea)? while beckoning us toward her home with a sweep of her arm. How could we refuse?
We followed her a short distance to her isolated farm house and sat down at the outdoor table piled with Lycian way books, tattered maps, English/Turkish dictionaries and family photo albums. She passed us the photo albums to look through and went to get us some ayran. She came back with two full glasses of the warm, watered-down, salted yogurt drink.
The ayran was made with fresh milk from her cows (or goats?) and topped with an herb. The flavor was sour, the consistency chunky, the portion so generous and the weather so hot, it didn’t quite hit the spot. Communicating with nonverbal gestures, she rubbed her stomach and said “ekmek” (bread) one of the few Turkish words I know! We obliged. She returned ten minutes later with a full meal - fresh cheese, fresh olives, honey, homemade olive oil, a cucumber and tomato salad and an unleveled bread. Her humble home did not appear to have electricity or on an oven. Her husband stopped by and communicated a few words with us via the pocket dictionary. When we asked how much to pay at the end of the meal, she shrugged and indicated that it was up to us.
With full bellies, we left the home. She showed back to the trail. We passed through peaceful wild meadows. The silky grass swayed in the breeze like waves. Lizards darted back and forth across stones and grasshoppers leaped out of our path. The dry cracked earth - it doesn’t rain much in the first half of June -was alive with busy ants and active anthills. The trail was empty of hikers. Perhaps we are the only people foolish enough to hike in June!
As the trail merged with the road into the town of Gökçeörenwe came across some mysterious rocks with hollowed out rooms inside, likely Lycian tombs. The road curved downhill until flattening out as it entered Gökçeören. We were serenaded by the call to prayer as we entered the town. We were expecting a small market or some indication of life in the city, but it was dead. This was problematic as we banking on purchasing food for dinner later!
Little did we know, we had be spotted by a pesion owner. He’d been wwatching us like a hawk from the second floor of his guesthouse as we descended the hill into Gökçeören. He strolled down the road and greeted us as we approached. He offered us cay (Turkish tea) and we agreed. In Turkey, and offering of cay is a universal symbol of hospitality. Once inside, we were easily persuaded to have lunch, mostly because we weren’t sure where else we’d be able to eat. He told us there was no market in town so we also bought some bread, vegetables, cheese and olives from him for dinner. Again, when we asked for the bill we were met with the response, “from the heart.” These locals are clever! By tugging a our heart strings we felt obliged to pay more than what was likely reasonable.
We filled up our water bottles from the city tap before returning to the trail. The trail followed the road for a bit and then onto an ill-maintained trail along a stream bed. We decided to continue on the road figuring we’d make better time on the smooth paved surface.
About an hour and a half later we found a clearing and dubbed in a perfect camp spot. We camped near a municipal water tap which meant we could finally wash ourselves from two days’ worth of sweat and sunscreen. Splashing ourselves with the refreshingly cold water was sheer bliss. Scott started a fire in attempt to ward off mosquitos, we shared our meal while a tortoise poked around in the grass, we watched sunset, and called it an early night.

A Stay at the Olympos Mountain Lodge, Beycik [Review]
A short, steep and bendy drive off the D-400 will take you up to the sleepy village of Beycik, nestled near in the foothills of Turkey’s Mount Olympus. Here you’ll find the Olympos Mountain Lodge, a spot where many who come to walk the Lycian Way begin their journey.
After negotiating the slightly terrifying winding country roads up to the lodge, avoiding guard dogs and a goat-related traffic jam, we drove through the gated entrance to the Olympos Mountain Lodge, parked up and pushed open its grand wooden doors.
Inside we were greeted by the owners Hakan and Yasmin, who were called in to introduce themselves and take us to our room.
Olympos Mountain Lodge – A Relaxed Retreat
Straight away we were taken in by the lodge’s relaxed vibe – you feel more like visiting friends than hotel guests, and after being shown to our room we were left to our own devices. We weren’t given any info on meal times or amenities etc – something we discovered is the norm in the region. We also found that there was sadly no kettle in the room, another norm in Turkey, and one that made the tea-addicted Brit sad. Still, Hakkan and Yasmin’s small team was always happy to make and bring tea to your room, and in the mornings, I asked them to pop a pot on the table of our balcony, where I would enjoy my morning cuppa looking out over the amazing views down to the sea.
It doesn’t take you long to begin unwinding at the lodge, which I think is added to by the fact it only has six rooms, making it a truly peaceful retreat. Unsurprisingly the rooms are very spacious. Visiting in May, we found the mountains slightly cooler than the coastal villages we stayed in, but however hot or cold it was outside the room temperature stayed the same, which was perfect for me – the person that feels the cold, and for Justin, who’s always runs hot. I also loved the large bed, as it came with two separate duvets, meaning I could wrap myself up without being accused of hogging the blanket!
Thanks to its skylight the spacious bathroom was always bright, and it had the most wonderfully powerful shower, which was bliss. Most of our time however, was spent outside by the pool or exploring the grounds.
Olympos Mountain Lodge Beycik review Turkey
Exploring the grounds
The lodge is very secluded, and there’s not a lot to do here apart from head off on walking adventures. Sadly, with my condition the terrain was too steep for me to walk far, but for the more healthy people out there, there’s the option to head off and explore the ruins of Laodikeia for a few hours or even make the 10 hour hike to Mt Olympos and back!
I wasn’t too bothered though, as we’d packed Kindles and board games so whiled away the days reading, swimming and playing games. There were cute little swings and chairs scattered around the grounds, so we would find a new pretty spot to pop ourselves. Lunch would be a picnic in the rocky olive grove below Mt Olympos, then we’d read and snooze until it was time to head back in for dinner.
As the sun begins to lower its fun to watch the goats head down from the mountaintop. Behind the lodge, looking up towards Mt Olympos, is a steep rocky area where some kind of work was taking place. In the evenings it was like a waterfall of goats flowing down the rocky slope, but during the day we would, white-knuckled, watch dumper trucks drive up and down precarious ‘roads’ on the edge of the mountain as they moved the rocks. You had to have some balls to make that drive!
Fine dining
After a day spent relaxing, the evenings were all about food. Yasmin is renowned for her amazing cooking, and every night guests are treated to a truly slap up dining event. Many guests actually return just for her cooking, so that gives you an idea how delicious the food was.
The dining and lounge area is next to the open plan kitchen, and you simply walk on over and pick your table when you’re ready to eat, dinner is usually ready to go from 7.30. If the weather is cool you’ll eat in here – I could picture the open fire roaring in winter, but on the warmer evenings, you can enjoy your meal on the wooden porch. When the sun went in they even gave me a lovely blanket to keep cosy.
On the table will be your menu for the evening, which will include a starter, second course(s), main and dessert. This changes every day and they’ll also cater to special requests, with as many of the ingredients freshly sourced from the lodge’s grounds.
I’m quite a picky eater, but almost everything we were served went down a treat. On the first night we had sea bass, which was perfectly cooked, followed by a local chicken dish the next day, which was served with a tasty mustard-based sauce. I got to try lots of local specialities, including green beans in a tomato sauce and boiled pumpkin with cinnamon, but my highlight was actually the breakfast dishes – fried halloumi and the most tasty omelettes I’ve ever eaten!
We really loved our time at the Olympos Mountain Lodge, it was easy to see why it gets a five star rating on TripAdvisor. Everyone there is so welcoming, and the place is just a lovely spot to escape to. In the evenings, at the end of dinner, Hakan would invite us to join him for a little glass of raki, a local aniseed-based spirit, and would always love to hang around for a chat.
We were actually quite sad to leave as we were so comfortable there and could have easily stayed longer. Still, we had more amazing adventures ahead of us. However, as Hakan waved us off, I could totally understand why so many of their customers are return guests…
Olympos Mountain Lodge – Pros and Cons to consider
I would definitely recommend a stay at the ‘lodge, but as with every hotel, whether it’s right for you depends on your likes and dislikes. With this in mind I wrote a list of pros and cons to consider…
Pros
Spacious rooms with beautiful views
The secluded location was bliss, and as there’s only 7 rooms, it often feels like you’ve got the place all to yourself!
Amazing evening meals, freshly made in front of you using locally sourced ingredients
Very welcoming hosts and staff
Wildlife – there’s a cute cat wondering around, and wildlife lovers will love all the creatures you can spot, from mountain goats and frogs through to colourful butterflies and beautiful birds.
Cons
Some people may not like the seclusion of the location, as it is remote and there aren’t many places you can reach by foot.
Mosquitoes – during our stay in May there were lots of mosquitoes, so repellent is a must.
Wildlife – watch where you walk. As you’re out in the country you’ll need to be careful for snakes and scorpions. One of the guests found a scorpion in her bin!
You aren’t allowed to bring your own food and drink to the ‘lodge. So, as there is nowhere close to eat, you’re confined to the choices, and prices, they offer.
Pin for later!

Visiting Mardin - A Travel Guide to Southeastern Turkey's Most Beautiful City
Arriving in Mardin, Turkey
Our drive through southeastern Turkey, from Van to Mardin, contained a security check point, which appears to be standard for overland travel in Turkey. Roadside police officers board the vehicle, collect Turkish identity cards from all passengers, run some kind of background check, and then, a few minutes later, return to the bus to distribute the cards. They weren’t interested in collecting our foreign passports, instead a quick glance sufficed. This routine procedure reinforced our feeling that traveling to Mardin is safe.
On the minibus we felt every twist, turn and bump on the 6-hour journey to Mardin. As is customary, the bus made smoke-stops for nicotine depraved passengers (and driver) and one stop for lunch along the route. Pulling into the modern suburb of Yenişehir, our drop-off point just below Mardin, it was possible to see the castle of old city of Mardin sitting regally on the hilltop above. As the highest point on the surrounding Mesopotamian plains, Mardin’s old city dominates the landscape.
We exited the bus, relieved that the long uncomfortable ride was finished, and crossed the street to the dolmuş (minibus) stop where displaced Syrian children hawked water bottles. Moments later we caught a minibus and a pair of 20-something guys, looking at our bulky packs, generously forfeited their seats for us. Once in the old city, our final destination, we dropped our bags off in our airbnb – a traditional (refurbished) stone carved dwelling over 600-years-old (!) - before heading out to dinner. The apartment’s were so thick that the internal temperature was cool despite not having air conditioning.
Our First Tastes of Mardin: Trying Local Specialities
Before dinner, we sat for a cup coffee, of which Mardin is know for a few local varieties. In additional to the standard cup of Turkish coffee we tried dibek coffee which is named for the dibek stone that was once used to grind the beans. The ground coffee is served sweet with a hint of cardamom. We also tried menengic coffee, but this is a misnomer. It isn’t actually coffee at all, it’s a hot drink made from roasted pistachio tree seeds that are ground into a paste and cooked with milk. Scott was a big fan on this un-caffeinated milky beverage.
We ate dinner on a rooftop that overlooked the vast plains onto Syria in the horizon. We sipped on Assyrian wine, which was traditionally homemade by a small community of Christian-Orthodox Assyrians using local grapes. It was never consumed to get drunk, but rather to symbolize the blood of Jesus. Now production has gone commercial and you can find this sweet, unusual wine for sale in a few restaurants and many shops in Mardin.
As we dined, rambunctious children played in the narrow stone lined alleys below and minarets towered overhead. We observed fig saplings growing like weeds between cracks in the stone walls, stray cats slinking about, candy-covered almonds being distributed freely, and stores toting unwieldy piles of homemade soap. We watched the sun set as it saturated the stone houses in a warm golden hue. Only hours after arriving, Mardin had captivated us. In fact, we were so enamored by the city that we decided to extend our stay.
A Background of Mardin, Turkey
Mardin is a city rich in history. For starters, it’s located in what was once known as Mesopotamia, the cradle of civilization. This region was once the homeland of the Syriacs, “an ancient people who trace their origin to the Akkadian Empire, established in Mesopotamia around 2200 BC. Syriac is a Semitic language directly related to the native tongue of Jesus Christ (https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Mardin).” In the 5th century, Mardin was settled by Assyrian Christians, then Arabs. Later ownership passed from the Turks, to the Kurds, to the Mongols, to the Persians and then to the Ottoman Empire. Today a small group of Assyrian Christians remain in the Mardin area and some of their churches are still intact - you can even visit a few of these historical sites. Is it Safe to Travel to Mardin?
Upon completing our own extensive research we’ve found that there have been no attacks directed towards tourists for years in the south of Turkey. The prior altercations have been between the Kurdish PKK militia and the Turkish government. If you look at the US State Department, however (as of July 2019), the US advises against travel to Turkey. They rate most of Turkey with a safety risk of 3 out of 4, which means: reconsider your travel plans. They give a blanket rating of 4 (Do Not Travel) to all areas near the Turkey/Iraq and Turkey/Syria border. However, we think this is unfounded. As an American, the sad truth is that your chances of being a victim of a mass shooting are more likely than experiencing a terrorist attack in Turkey. We felt very safe during our 3 months of travel around Turkey, which included visits to Van, Diyarbakir, Mardin, Urfa, Gaziantep, Antakya, Cappadocia, The Lycian Way, Selcuk, The Turquoise Coast, Istanbul, and Antalya. Not only did we not have a single issue regarding our health or safety, but we were also received with warmth from locals in all locations. If you haven’t read our post on the safety of backpacking through Turkey read our article on Turkey Travel Safety 2019.
Exploring Mardin’s Old City
We set out early in the morning to familiarize ourselves with Mardin’s Old City (or Old Town as it is also referred). Getting out as the city awakens is our favorite time of day - it’s still not too hot and energy emanates from the potential of a new day. With no plan in mind we meandered the alleys, too narrow for cars, but not for donkeys (which is consequently, how garbage is collected). The old city, which is not large, is easy enough to explore on foot - if you aren’t bothered by frequent uphill walking and stair climbing that is. The quiet back alleys felt like they were ours explore. Though domestic tourists visit Mardin they don’t venture far from the main street and international tourism hasn’t returned to full force since the Turkey-PKK conflict in the 90’s. We admired old ornate doorways, where the street level has risen over thousands of years to the midpoint of the door - a tangible reminder of just how old this city is.
We tried a variety of fresh breads displayed enticingly in front of bakeries, some fragrant with cinnamon and other spices, then meandered into a back alley bizarre where the dying craft of copper engraving is still showcased by a dwindling number of artisans. Homemade Mardin soap, a centuries old craft, is another locally produced item that can be found everywhere in Mardin. The soaps are special because of their natural, locally derived ingredients like olive oil and pistachio. There’s a soap to cure any skin malady - acne, eczema, wounds, hair loss - or so they say. Actually in need of soap, we purchased a bar for less than a dollar. (For this bargain price, get away from the main street to buy your soap.) The shop owner rang us up while a lit cigarette dangled from his lips. A shocking number of people smoke and there doesn’t seem to be any regulation as to where one can or cannot smoke.
Winding down alleys further away from the main street we passed a man sitting on his stoop. He called after us, “where from?” And shortly after we were beckoned to join him. His daughter brought out a tray with coffee and, through gesturing, inquired if we would like anything to eat. They brought us a tray of fruit and in addition the man extended his spoon and bowl to share his own breakfast of meat and bulgur with us. Using single words, we managed to communicate a bit. At the commotion outside his preteen grandson emerged and excitedly communicated with us using a cellphone and google translate (android / apple). He reassured us that we could ask for anything we wanted from them, and that we should ask “shamelessly.” Curious neighbors walked by and gave waves and smiles. The family pointed out a few Syrian people as they passed – a reminder of the influx of refugees and the war happening not too far away. With amusement they divulged that one of their neighbors has 46 children with his three wives.
At the end of our visit, the grandson communicated that “we are nice,” “ what we are doing is beautiful,” and that he “hoped we liked them.” With these parting words, we were sent us on our way to continue our exploration of the ancient city. Their kindness lingering with us all day.
After covering my head with a scarf, we entered The Grand Mosque. Inside the carpeted prayer hall we noticed two women craning their necks in order to place their face below a glass cabinet. They gestured to us and encouraged us to do the same thing. The cabinet contained a supposed hair from The Prophet Mohammad’s beard. We realized what they were doing - they were smelling the seam of cabinet door hoping for a whiff of the beard hair! Later, in a different mosque housing a supposed footprint of Mohammed, a man opened the glass cabinet, swiped his hand down the footprint, then rubbed his hand onto his beard. It seems like interacting with religious items is full sensory experience here. People aren’t satisfied by only looking; they want to absorb it. (It also seems like doors, signs, and restrictions are headed as more of a “suggestion.”)
On the outskirts of the bazaar we sat down for a cafeteria-style meal. I love these no-frills types of places where all of the options are on display. The atmosphere is simple, the service is prompt, and the food is typically delicious. The best part of eating a meal in Turkey is all of the additional plates of meze, condiments, garnish and/or veggies that come along with it free of charge. After finishing the meal, we headed toward the door and made sure to compliment the owner’s tasty food. In response he handed us a dough-covered fried ball of meat for the road. The Turkish people take great pleasure in feeding us!
Later, Scott got a haircut and shave. He can’t get enough of these barbers’ meticulous skills, make sure to read about his last Turkish haircut. He also spent over an hour being pampered at Emir Hamamı. This hammam (public bath house) had separate hours of entry for women and men. We’ve been looking for a bath house where males and females can attend together, and although it exists in some cities, it’s certainly not traditional and not found in Mardin. To me, the baths seem a bit daunting to take on alone and a tad uncomfortable. Fortunately, Scott was happy to assume the role of guinea pig and reported back his hammam experience.
Historically, hammams were public places for cleansing and relaxation. Scott felt like he stepped back in time when visiting the hammam, back to a time when access to a hot bath wasn’t readily available and one’s hygiene was entrusted to a burly professional. Scott’s hammam experience began in the sauna which he arrived in through a series of marble rooms. The temperature in the sauna climbed steadily from 131 degrees. At 155 degrees, Scott wondered if he’d been forgotten. Sweating, he exited and was lead to a large marble room where a hairy shirtless man, armed with a loofah, throughly scrubbed away layers upon layers of dead skin. Scott reports that the dead skin sloughed off in rolls. The scrubber-man then donned an oven mitt-like glove, lathered it with soap and scrubbed Scott’s entire body. Next he washed off the soap and gave Scott a brief but firm massage. One final rinse and Scott concluded his first trip to a hammam. He really enjoyed it. Next it’s my turn.
Turkish Hospitality - Never Turn Down a Cup of Tea When Offered
Locals took great interest in us and we had the pleasure of meeting quite a few during our stay in Mardin. Our english sparked attention wherever we went, and we were constantly met with friendly curiosity, the ever-present question of, “where are you from?” and invitations for tea. We met the persistent ice cream boy who demanded we stop by for a chat every time we passed his cart (he still texts Scott), we met a group of teenage boys who shared their liter of soda with us while attempting to speak English, and we met a young doctor through the couchsurfing network.
It was refreshing to hear the doctor’s progressive female perspective as we’ve mostly met men. In fact, in many of the Turkish cities we’ve visited it feels like a disproportionate amount of men are visible on the streets, sitting and chatting over cups of cay (tea) while smoking cigarettes. Over a glass of Assyrian wine, she provided some information about Turkey’s history and insights about the political climate. She was educated in the west of Turkey, but because Turkey is a democratic socialist country, she was assigned a year and a half of service in Mardin. Prior to working in Mardin she admitted to having some preconceived notions about the Kurdish people who are densely populated in southeastern Turkey (Kurdistan), a sentiment mirrored by some in western Turkey. But, after working in the southeast, near Turkish Kurdistan, and gaining exposure to this group of people she now has a much different opinion. Based on our experiences in Van and Diyabakir, we have found the Kurdish people to be absolutely delightful, open, and generous despite any existing tension.
On another occasion, as we played with a tiny kitten in an alleyway (we just couldn’t refuse it’s cuteness), an older man watched us from his balcony. Smiling down he called, “madam!” “milk!” We nodded in acknowledgment, not recognizing this exchange as an invitation. Moments later his 20-ish daughter entered the alley and invited us up for tea asking, “cay?” We followed her to the second floor of the building where her father (the older man), her mother, and a few other family members sat watching television. The TV was promptly turned off and everyone gave us a smile and friendly greeting. We were given ayran (a watery salted yogurt drink) and multiple glasses of cay. The older man communicated with a few single words of English but what he couldn’t communicate in words, he communicated with his smile and generosity. We sat through many moment of silence, wishing we could construct any semblance of a sentence in Turkish. Eventually we resorted to typing back and forth on his computer using google translate. We shared our plans for Mardin - he even offered to join us for some of the sights. He gave us some suggestions, then showed us around his home. When it was time for us to leave visible dissapointment crossed his face. Even without a common language this family had taken it upon themselves to personally welcome us to their city and celebrate our presence in Mardin. We were blown away by their willingness to reach out to us as strangers in order to ensure that we felt accepted and comfortable in their hometown.
Extending hospitality is in the Turkish people’s blood. It’s truly at the core of their beings and we’re happy to see that it’s not a dying trait. Hospitality is still very much intact in the younger generation as we observed in our 26-year-old neighbor. Our neighbor, also amused by our antics of caring for the abandoned kitten, invited us into his home for cay, tea. Pouring us tea and offering us cigarettes he used the few English words he knew. With no sense of rush or urgency, he embraced our company, asked us questions and shared information about himself - he works as a solider. He asked us about our plans for Mardin and we admitted we were having difficulty figuring out transit to the archeological site of Dara - a public bus wasn't available and taxis had quoted us unfairly high prices. Immediately wanting to resolve our problem, he offered to go with us so a taxi would charge a fair local rate, and then he took it up a notch by calling a taxi-driver friend to inquire about securing a fair price. We accepted the price, as it was lower than the other offers we received, and we visited Dara 30 minutes laterthat day accompanied by our neighbor; our own local ambassador.
I’ve been thinking about the displays of hospitality and the welcoming nature of the people we met in Mardin. I have some ideas - firstly, they are kind and sincere people, secondly, they take pride in their culture, thirdly it’s a culture that assumes less privacy - people sit outdoors inviting conversation with neighbors, extended family members come and go - it’s like the homes have a revolving door. Sometimes people sit in silence together, just appreciating the company of others, not feeling a need to be entertaining but just cherishing the time spent together. I think the concept of privacy may be more of a western construct, (maybe in response to an overly stimulating life? maybe a result of living in homes larger than our social species was meant for?). For example, large suburban homes isolate individuals from neighbors and some houses are so large you can go hours without seeing family members. I also think that in the States we are plagued by a chronic need for “busy-ness” - if we’re busy, we’re productive and therefore '“useful”. We are a country that values productivity, perhaps sometimes at the expense of other virtues like the connection that can be built through shared idleness. Scott theorizes this phenomenon is one of the several unintentional pitfalls of capitalism.
Now, this tiny little kitten that I’ve mentioned a few times really threw a wrench in our plans, but we couldn’t possibly stay mad at him and his cute lil’ face. We found him alone, stretched out on a stone staircase, with low-energy and a dry, crusty face. The little guy looked like he was in need of some hydration. (Might I add that temperatures reached 105 degrees during our stay in June!) We carried him a short distance to our courtyard where he frantically lapped up water and milk and put away a startling amount of the canned meat we’d just purchased for him. Over the next few days his energy reeved-up and he playfully raced around our rented apartment and courtyard like an adorable little doofus. We were growing quite fond of our pint-sized furry friend. But, he did have a concerning sneeze. We decided we couldn’t possibly return him to the streets and started a search for a new home for our little guy. Unfortunately, taking him with us wasn’t an option. So, Scott reached out to the local couchsurfing community for help.
Our plea was successful and the night before we were to leave Mardin we met with a guy living locally who had an interest in helping animals. We met for tea in the Old City and he told us about himself. He was born in Syria but now lived as a refugee in Turkey. Due to his refugee status he had difficulty finding a job, despite being highly educated in engineering and fluent in English (self-taught). He has not been able to return to Syria for six years. He has not seen his family, his parents, his brothers or sisters in person for six years. He feels a sense of hopelessness and a loss of freedom which is felt even more acutely as he’s less than 20 miles from his family but isn’t permitted to leave Mardin. He vocalized that citizenship is many other countries favors the wealthy and he feels defeated. He currently works as an English teacher. Lately he feels that the Turkish people are becoming increasingly less tolerant of Syrians in their country, commenting that some people are using hashtags on instagram that are hateful toward Syrians. In spite of this, he has a big heart. He put up with our escapade as we corralled the kitten into a box for transport and he continues to send photos and follows-up with us about the kitten. He took the kitten to the vet and paid for injections for an infection the kitten suffered from. We are so touched. He did not have to take on this responsibility on top of his own hardships. We are so thankful that our kitten found a loving home.
Visiting Mardin’s Historical Sites: Dara and Deyrul Zafaran Monastery
Dara Ancient City
Th archeological site of Dara is 30km south of Mardin, 7km from the Syrian border. The city was once a powerful fortress for the Romans in the 6th century. Today there are two major location to explore: the necropolis and the water cistern. We arrive at the necropolis by taxi and spent about 40 minutes walking the grounds. It’s possible to see carved cave tombs and an expansive gallery grave where hundreds of bodies were buried in a massive grave. Peering into the tomb its possible to see countless bone remains beneath a glass floor. Tangible evidence that proves this site served as a cemetery for almost 1,500 years.
A few minutes by car took us to the impressive Dara water cistern, which was accidentally discovered by a farmer in the area. Descending into the cistern, the temperature drops and it’s possible to image the volume of water once contained between the ornate stone arches. Entrance to both sites was free. We encountered only a few tourists at each site. Currently, as of July 2019, there are no busses to Dara so renting a car, hiring a taxi, or taking private tour are your only options too see this marvelous ancient city.
Deyrul Zafaran Monastery (Mor Hananyo Monastery)
The still active Deyrul Zafaran Monastery is located 6km outside of Mardin. Built for the Assyrian Christians in 493AD, this monastery is still one of the most important religious centers for the Assyrian Church. It was built on a hill on what was originally a sun temple and later used a castle by the Romans. A small area is open to the public for a fee. There is no public transit to the monastery, so a taxi is you best option.
Mardin City Museum
Also worth a mention is the lovely Mardin City Museum, it’s small but loaded with interesting historical and cultural information about Mardin with english translations.

Turkey’s Lycian Way – day 1
2017 trip report by site editor Rick McCharles – 6 days / 5 nights
Investigated and then waymarked by Kate Clow, a Britishwoman living in Turkey, with the help of a number of volunteers and Turkish Ministry of Culture in early 2000s, Lycian Way connects a number of villages, mountain hamlets, Lycian and Roman sites on its route and ranges from 0 m (sea level) to 1,800 m summit of Mt Tahtalı (known by the name Olympos in ancient times) at elevation.
It’s not a single footpath that has been intact since times immemorial, rather it’s a collection of ancient paths, mule and caravan trails, forest and backcountry roads.
I planned to do about a week on the 500km+ Lycian Way in May.
But what section?
Kate Clow and the staff of Cultural Routes Society in Antalya gave me advice and — more importantly — instruction on how to reach the trailhead.
I took a local bus out to the gigantic Migros grocery store to pick up last minute supplies.
Then caught an intercity bus in transit to Kumluca.
The driver pointed me in the direction of Mavikent, a coastal town. I’d walked about 2km on the road before the local dolmuş (taxis van) passed by taking me the rest of the way to the coast.
I’d assumed the van would stop at some town centre plaza or Mosque. It did not. The driver ended up in the middle of nowhere parked, I’m guessing, at his home.
I walked back about 2km to a very impressive hotel called the Şah Inn Paradise to get directions to the Lycian Way. Hotel desk staff speaks English.
The manager kindly put me in a golf cart and had a driver take me to the Mediterranean. A great way to begin.
A great way until this hotel staff woman began yelling at me.
I was taking photos close to the ladies beach, not allowed in Muslim nations.
Still, this was an ideal start, the last of a very long beach section.
Kate Clow told me literally no hikers walk the flat, boring 20km delta of the Alakir Cay river. They all take public transport around the flats to this point.
Sea turtles nest here. Sadly this one had (somehow) been killed.
When the sand ended I walked the road past many family campgrounds. This one had a Mosque.
Though I carried 3 days food my plan was to eat at least one big restaurant meal each day.
Chicken kabobs in Karaoz.
I never eat alone in Turkey. There are always friends hanging out hoping for a morsel.
I was feeling pretty good about the hike at this point.
My restaurant host recommended I not hike as far as the lighthouse. Instead I should find a quiet spot close to water about an hour past Karaoz. Good advice.
I walked in on a farm road and set up my tent atop this cliff.
Red wine as the sun set fell on the Mediterranean.
more photos
On to day 2.
