1) Portwell

I think this episode showed that though EJ is 17-18, he's still a child playing with sock puppets. 18 is a number given by the government for when you can be held legally accountable. Some states say 17, and for other countries it's 21-22. EJ may be legal but he's still a child that hasn't gone to college. I think the writers made a mistake of making him a senior. He should've been written as a junior. EJ and Gina can legally date but not get overly sexual till she's 18+. So, it's not wrong for them to date.

Gina is extremely mature for her age due to life's experiences. So, imo, they match. For the first time ever, I'm listing Portwell as my number one HSMTMTS ship.🥇

EJ treats her so well. He's literally husband material.🤵💍 They grew separately as characters and now they are joining their arcs. He's the best of the best. And Gina deserves that. I think she got her sign at the end of the episode and she may have realised she liked him back. 😍

I'm completely okay with EJ being her first kiss while on a dinner date with Risotto. Her future husband. Gina literally becoming a part of Caswell family and Ashlyn's cousin in law. They are already besties and room mates. This episode got me to jump ship until I get good enough reasons for Gina to be with Ricky.

But if Gina and EJ do end up dating, she CANNOT leave him for Ricky. If that's the case, I'll lose respect for the show. Like every girl leaves EJ for Ricky? Nope.😑 I don't mind if Portwell goes wrong and Gina even ends up with even a cute stranger like Jack.

But the writers need to get rid of this trope of Ricky >> EJ.

Because to me, EJ >>>>>>> Ricky. Ricky needs to work on himself before he can be with anyone. Period. Boy needs to heal. He needs his mom and consistent parental support.

If Portwell were to be fully established, Rina window has to be closed. Until then, I can't fully jump ship because EJ deserves better than being second to Ricky again. They need to address what happened. Their feelings need to disappear. Or whatever. Like how Nina and EJ's relationship was. Addressed, resolved and closed.

2) Rina

I'm still up for Rina slowburn, but ONLY if they give respect to EJ's character.✅ Because EJ definetely likes Gina as of now and has the biggest character growth.

If Rina happens, EJ and Nina needs to get back together before Rina. Nina chooses EJ and Gina chooses Ricky. I would be fine with that. (And Nina needs to forget that EJ stole her phone and erased Ricky's message because Ricky did much worse, he erased an opportunity for Nina to collab.)

I was a season one Rina and until I get Ricky being better of a choice and treating Gina better, I won't jump back to Rina ship. He needs to understand how insensitive he was towards her if he were to catch feelings. He needs to be the one pining now. I know he's already hurting, but they need to show me that Ricky's feelings for Gina are stronger than what he had for Nini. That if Nina was still an option, he'd still pick Gina. 💜

3) Jackina

Okay they were really cute. More chemistry than even Rina and Portwell. But it's still so hard not to see them as Buffy and Jonah. It's got my brain confused cuz I know it's Jack and Gina who are flirting, but I'm seeing Juffy. And being a huge Muffy shipper (my profile pic is literally them)....I feel like I'm cheating my ship lol. But all shipping aside, Jack needs to be a main character.

Asher and Sofia work so well together, even more so because they've worked together before. I love the idea of Jack and Gina. Jack and Gina can be a plot device. But not EJ or Ricky. Maybe he should date Lily. But I still love Jack and Gina, like he got under her skin. Good shit right there. 🧡

4) Nina and EJ

Them following their dreams and leaving their old lives behind. Moving in together. And now that they've both grown into a better version of themselves. And Nina being the first person EJ confided about Duke....

If Rina were to happen after a Portwell breakup, let it be the leading man choosing the second female lead. And the leading lady choosing the second male lead. Nina dating Gina's primary ex and, Gina dating Nina's primary ex. So, it doesn't come off as Gina dating Nina's exes.🙄

So the love square is balanced. ✅

Ricky and Nina are forever done but remain friends due to sharing mutuals, respecting each other, embracing but letting go of their past and having a soft spot for each other.

But like I've stated a million times, my non canon ship is Gini. The POTENTIAL.😍 That's my OTP. Back to fanfics I go. 😂

i have a lot of favorite ships so this question is not specific enough for me but i am still on aotd brainrot (hahahaha get it? brainrot? bc zombies?) so i am applying this to vandieter which i literally made a whole playlist for, the first song on which is shelter by finneas. it's not the first song i added to the playlist, interestingly enough, but it's the one i feel best applies to them ("give me shelter from the storm" makes me think of them both hiding out in the vault when the bomb goes off) so that's why i'm using it as my answer. perhaps i'll share the full playlist when i feel comfortable enough (and get a good cover photo).

do i need to explain this one? i have GAD (general anxiety disorder) so this song is a mood and a half for, like, basically my daily struggle. i mean obviously it applies mostly to those bad episodes of anxiety but it's rare for me to go a whole day without feeling at least some sort of mild form of anxiety. so yeah, the chorus lyrics hit deep.

stealing this one from amanda bc i honestly agree, i do Not get the hype around this song. and i'm a fan of hsmtmts so i was happy to see olivia finally getting some recognition but i feel like it was almost Too Much for what's kind of a mediocre song. not to mention the rumored drama with josh bassett and sabrina carpenter and i'm also a big josh fan so that made me not care for the song either. like i guess i kinda felt protective of him, in a way. it was also mostly swifties who were hyping olivia and i hate taylor swift so there's that too. (i'll admit olivia's third single, "good for u", isn't bad, i do actually like it, but my overall interest in her career is at an all time low and there's speculation she may leave hsmtmts after this season which i would not mind, tbh.)

so this is a random throwback story. honestly the details are kinda fuzzy now, but basically i remember there was like a day in 7th grade where btr had a new song premiering on the radio and obviously i couldn't listen to it until i got home from school (i didn't have a smartphone till college), so as soon as i got home, i raced to my computer (i don't even think it was mine, i think it was my sister's laptop, technically, but i borrowed it bc i could and i dunno, maybe she wasn't home?) to go to youtube to look up a recording of the song (remember those days, when songs weren't just instantly available on streaming?) and i found one that was a lyric video so i put it on and yeah. obviously had a great time listening to the song bc i instantly fell in love and i think i was dancing in my seat to it before it was even over and yeah. it was just a good time in my life bc i had a favorite band and i was finally well-adjusted to middle school life but i was still a kid so i still had kid interests and little responsibility and i miss it.

so this also has a tiny story/context. i forget how it started but basically whenever i hear this song on the radio when i'm in the car with my mom, she imitates those little background grunt sounds and it always makes me laugh. like it's basically turned into a routine where i'll sing bruno's part and then point to her as her cue to do the grunts. it's fun and it always makes me smile and laugh and think of her if i ever hear the song on my own.

ok hsmtmts Twitter was low-key on an anti-nini rant and it made me realize how much I don't like her character (which is really just bc of the way she's written. Before I continue, I want to preface that I LOVE Olivia like I adore her and this is not me speaking down on her acting or her as a person, but rather the persona she was assigned and the script she was given. This has no rhyme or reason so let's begin! First, nini stealing Gina's stuff. So before, I let people justifying nini's actions slide bc hey Gina took her phone first. This is true. However, while doing this was absolutely wrong and I don't condone nor support Gina's actions, she had no clue what EJ would do with nini's phone. Of course her actions enabled him but again she did nothing to nini's phone but putting it in ej's bag. In response, nini first steals Gina's dance shoes but plans to return them. Before she can do this, she hears Gina make a comment that I didn't even feel to be rude; of course, it preyed on nini's insecurities, but Gina did not say it with malicious intent; rather, she was helping nini stand out even more. Lacking sense, nini steals many of Gina's things, including her LAPTOP. I just don't understand the reasoning behind this, especially when you consider that nini is older than Gina AND Gina literally just moved there. Like come on that's incredibly rude to a new student who barely knows you, especially when nini is painted to be the victim in this scenario. Ok next, EJ. I've seen a lot of discussion, and I feel as though nini cheated on Ricky with EJ. (of course, Ricky was talking with other girls over the summer so it could be mutual, but this isn't about him) they both agreed to take a break; not break up. In fact, this is further affirmed when nini definitively says this is over to Ricky on the first day. Before this point, their relationship, though nothing strong, was still something. Next, how she treats Ricky. The two of them were best friends for YEARS before they began dating. I simply don't understand how she couldn't a) realize that telling someone you love them over Instagram where a bunch of people can see it before you tell them is manipulative and b) why she treated him like shit after their official break-up. she showed very little interest in Ricky for eps 1-5 but as soon as he starts hanging out with Gina we get a jealous running away in EP 6 and that awkward moment at Thanksgiving. Speaking of Thanksgiving, what the fuck was wrong with her (and most of the other people there) laughing when Gina's mom spoke. That's so rude, like I don't get how people can excuse that behavior, especially towards Gina, again a person who only recently moved to town. If these people were actually her friends, which we see no evidence of besides her friendship/flirtationship with Ricky. I won't pin this only on nini bc others like Seb and Carlos were doing the same thing. I'm going to close with my least favorite nini scene bc she really displays her selfishness (it is not bc it is a r*ni scene but I also don't like it bc of that lol). It's when ricky and nini are practicing in the old room and he finally receives a response from Gina telling him she'll be missing the show due to moving. Nini takes this as a great moment to be like "oh I totally relate to that bc I might possibly but not definitely will be going to a performing arts school and my bestie was sad when I mentioned it" like GIRL those two situations are not at all comparable like Gina is forced to move as she has been in the past where you are actively making the decision to pursue schooling that would allow you to improve creatively; that moment was just really tonedeaf for me and turned me off from nini. In conclusion, she is a terribly written character and someone who is very selfish who creates problems for herself bc she's not truly dealing with anything. I didn't even go into how she treated kourtney (like a sidekick and a therapist) or how her unprofessionalism almost ruined the show but somehow got into YAC??? idk I hope she's written better in s2

HSMTMTS 1x02 Review

The Read-Through was a great ep that surpassed the already high bar set by the premiere. Let’s dig in!

I had read about it in reviews but wow that Ashlyn and Nini duet was amazing. Julia Lester has a very powerful voice. It really was a wise decision for to show to film the kids singing live as much as possible

‘Wondering’ the song really highlights that although the show knows how to poke fun at itself and the movies, it is a deeply earnest show. It’s hilarious that Miss Jenn decides that the drama teacher of all characters needs a power ballad and of course Ms. Darbus herself was never a very important character in the movies but rather than play the whole situation for laughs they actually deliver a really moving song that gives a lot of depth to the role of Ms. Darbus in the musical and ties in beautifully with Nini’s conflicting feelings regarding Ricky

I’m pleasantly surprised at how they’re already giving Ashlyn some depth. I wasn’t sure if I’d like her that much based off of the little we knew of her before the show premiered but she really brings a lot to the table. I’m very glad they’re not going the cliche route of EJ is embarrassed to be seen publicly with his weird cousin. I like the little touches we get with her like her wearing her grandma’s glasses and her over exuberance at the read through. I’m curious to learn more about her and EJ’s families because although they’re cousins they are very different people

A really strong ep for Ricky and one that sure’s to please Nicky shippers. Dousing himself in cologne because he thinks the ‘pheromones’ in it will please Nini was such a teen boy thing to do (and loved the brand name throb). It’s good that Nini called him out for not taking the musical very seriously, for having auditioned just so he could be close to her, and for not being able to commit to things. He really needed that wake up call and it led to some good character growth when he buckles down and learns the choreography which was a funny scene and it reminded me of Phil Dunphy doing the same thing on Modern Family

Strong work by both Joshua Bassett and the writers with the glimpses we get of Ricky’s home life. It was a sad but realistic detail when Ricky didn’t want Big Red over because of how tense things have been at home. And I liked that Mr. Bowen sat down and watched Ricky practice rather than just going back to bed or berating him. I’m sure Ricky’s mom isn’t trying to hurt Ricky by staying in Chicago but just ghosting her family like this is only delaying the inevitable conversation she’’s going to need to have with her husband and Ricky

So far the show is doing a good job of balancing angst and drama and romantic moments for Nicky. Nini was clearly impressed by seeing Ricky performing the choreography in the library and she then avoided EJ on her way out. She definitely had a bit of a moment when she made eye contact with Ricky during Wondering and again she avoided telling EJ what was up. Kourtney bluntly asked her if she really wanted to be with EJ and Nini’s answer didn’t sound all that convincing. I don’t blame her for being torn, she and Ricky had gone out for a while and it was only a little more than 6 weeks ago in universe that she told Ricky she loved him

The show took a big step towards making Nini’s choice easier by somewhat villainizing EJ. I’m glad that Ashlyn correctly called him out for being scary and for pointing out that he doesn’t own Nini. Him saying that he wanted to stay with Nini because she made him a better person right after asking Ashlyn to steal her phone so he could read her messages sure was something

It’s true that as Ashlyn said EJ is being paranoid but as the old saying goes, just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean that they’re not out to get you. Ricky really is trying to win Nini back and breakup her and EJ and Nini really does still have some level of feelings for Ricky. That of course doesn’t justify his bad actions but the motivation for his jealousy and insecurity are there. And we also get an important line from Ashlyn about how EJ could stand to not always get what he wants. He clearly expected to win the lead and be with Nini for a long time only to have Ricky waltz in at the last moment and pull out the rug from under him

 In a way I’m glad that they’re starting to unravel NJ now because that will ultimately make things less messy when the show starts guiding Nicky back together. As I’ve said before, love triangles usually devolve into someone cheating on their significant other in some fashion and the less emotional cheating we get on this show the better imo

Miss Jenn continues to be a G rated April Rhodes and I’m here for it. It’s wildly inappropriate for her to basically nudge Nini and Ricky back together because it will help the show and she believes in their chemistry but it’s exactly the kind of stuff she needs to be doing in her role as an agent of chaos. Her going hard with the solo during the read through and making such a big deal out of Gabriella’s 2006 phone was too funny. We got another phone call with her mom about money problems, we’ll see what comes of it.

Gina made a big splash this ep. I liked that her plot involved convincing Ricky to stay as an indirect way to get Nini out of the way, that was clever of her. We get a little glimpse of how being a transfer student and her desire to make a place for herself colours her actions and we get to see how observant she is. She went full on villain at the end though when she took Nini’s phone and put it in EJ’s bag. Gina has no way of knowing if there actually is anything on Nini’s phone regarding her and Ricky but she’s clearly picked up on the spark that’s still there between them. EJ would be a fool to work with her because they are not in fact after the same thing; EJ wants to be the Troy to Nini’s Gabriella but Gina wants to be Gabriella in place of Nini and I doubt she cares who plays Troy. Those are mutually exclusive goals right there

Good ep for Big Red as well, his cult line was funny and his awful readings of the stage directions was hilarious. He continues to be a steadfast friend for Ricky, they’ve got a good bromance going on

A pretty funny ep all around, lots of great lines. I think my favourite is the exchange between Miss Jenn and EJ where she said he was lurking and he says he was going for loitering

Not quite sure what to make of Carlos thinking that Ricky was going to assault him in the library. I did like the start of a possible friendship we see between him and Ricky. Seb gets some lines and we learn he’s a piano playing farm boy with milking glasses and he’s a sophomore like Carlos. It will be interesting to see when they start something with Seblos and how far that relationship will go this season. Seb is in all 10 eps this season if Joe Serafini’s imdb is accurate which puts him above all the other guest stars

It wasn’t romantic of course but just seeing a bunch of guys holding hands with guys and girls holding hands with girls really shows how much further HSMTMTS will be able to go than Andi Mack was. There’s just no way a mass hand holding scene like this would ever have been allowed to happen on Andi Mack. And the casual way Nini referred to one of her moms sending her fortune cookie sayings in a regular ep instead of one of the two or three designated textual gay eps per season that Andi Mack was allowed was refreshing 

I really liked the skate park and shooting at an actual high school continues to pay off for the show

Looking Ahead:

It’s looks like most of the clips we’ve seen on various trailers came from the first two eps so we’re in largely uncharted waters going forward. Hopefully someone uploads the next ep promo

We know EJ has an apology song coming up so he likely gets caught sooner rather than later and I wonder if Gina gets exposed with him or if her breakdown scene we saw in the promo relates to something else

“I think the pink one would look nice on you.”

“Good thing I live for your validation,” y/n laughed as she showed her boyfriend yet another plain camisole. 

Joshua gripped y/n’s shirt and pulled her closer to him, “If I get to take it off, I think I should get an opinion, don’t you think?”

Y/n shivered at his voice before turning around and shoving him away, jokingly.

“Oh my god! Josh, go back out there. I’ll be there in a second.”

As the 6ft man giggled and walked out to the main room, he couldn’t help but to think of the Christmas present he had gotten his partner.

The 14k necklace was sort of an impulsive buy because he hadn’t planned on getting her that for Christmas, but once he saw it, he knew all it needed was to be engraved and it’d be perfect.

9 months is definitely special enough to give y/n the pendant. It also coincidentally falls on Christmas Day. 2 for 1.

Joshua thinks about their story all the time. 

They met at a mutual friend’s family party. She went up to him and asked for his number. She liked him but he didn’t notice. She pined after him and then something in Joshua changed and suddenly all he knew was that he wanted the beautiful girl who surprised him by making the first move.

They’ve known each other for a little over a year now but Josh swears its been 10. 

They get each other. 

They get each other so well.

So why has y/n felt their love deteriorating.

Suddenly, her heart no longer raced for him.

Their future that she could so vividly picture had turned into something she did not want to experience. 

She loves Joshua. But she’s not sure she’s in love with Joshua.

She was no actress, but she’s been acting as if nothing’s changed for a couple of weeks now.

Falling for someone else is one, but falling out of love for your partner despite there not being another hurt.

She could feel her heart ache at the idea that Joshua no longer made her feel butterflies.

She’s trying. She really is.

Arriving back at y/n’s family home made her feel butterflies.

Out of nervousness, out of fear.

Her home was no longer a home, it was a safe place.

That’s what Joshua had become.

He was no longer her home, he was a safe place.

She knew he’d be there, that he was a perfect man who could give her a happy ever after.

But she doesn’t want a happy ever after.

She just wants to be happy.

Joshua’s been trying to make her happy for several days now.

He could feel her slowly getting tired of him.

He’s not ready to give up.

He loves her, she’s his safe place.

He’s hoping they can last a few more weeks until Christmas so he can give her his gift and it’ll fix everything.

It has to fix everything.

They’re not broken, they can be fixed.

Even if he had to break some of himself to fix their whole.

The week before Christmas was nerve-wracking. 

Each time y/n asked Joshua for a chance to talk, he avoided it.

If she doesn't have the chance to talk about ending us, then she can’t, right? It’ll go away.

But Joshua knew better than to pick at the loose ends, they always eventually fall apart.

He picked up some daisies because he knew y/n loved daisies.

He drove to y/n’s house, with his heart in his stomach.

Maybe this is a bad idea, he thought. 

But his heart knew better than that.

So when he arrived and knocked on y/n’s door, he wasn’t expecting to be attacked in a hug by his much-shorter girlfriend.

She pecked his lips, “Hi baby.”

He held her tight.

She pulled him closer.

After what felt like hours, they pulled apart and Joshua handed y/n the flowers.

She smiled and led him to her bedroom after he had greeted her parents in the kitchen.

“Let’s watch a movie?”

“Yeah, I’ve been trying to rewatch Spiderman but I never do,” y/n groaned as she began browsing through the movie titles on the tv.

Joshua kicked his shoes off and made his way to her bed where he sat all the way back on the headboard. 

After y/n had started the movie, she flipped her main light off and went to the bed, sitting on the edge.

As the ads began to play, y/n turned to Joshua, “Thank you for the flowers. They’re really beautiful.”

Joshua smiled, “You deserve them.”

Y/n felt that ache in her heart, yet again. 

She really didn’t. He was the one who deserved more.

Better.

And she can’t give him that.

Not genuinely, anyway.

I can’t keep doing this.

She grabbed the remote and hit pause just as the first scene began. 

Facing away, y/n began, “Joshua, loo-”

“No.”

She turned around to look at him and was met with a broken man.

She could finally see what her behavior had done to him.

She claimed to love this man, and she hurt him.

“I’m sorry. I am so, so sorry.”

He shook his head and looked away, unable to maintain eye contact with her.

“No, you don’t have to be sorry. We can fix this, alright?”

He made his way over to her and sat next to her.

Her eyes swelled, she quietly scoffed, “There’s nothing to fix.”

Joshua’s lips parted as he thought.

Everything he had wanted to say to her, had completely vanished from his brain.

“Look, we’re not perfect, nowhere near it, but that’s what make us, us. We get each other.” “Is that all? We ‘get each other?’ Is that as deep as our relationship gets? I’m not happy, Josh. I’m not happy anymore, and I don’t want to force it and give you false hope.”

His heart dropped, once again.

“I’m not giving up just because you’re telling me to. I know you’ve been off for a while, but that’s okay. I can give you space. To think, to breathe. Whatever you need me to do, I’ll do it. I know we-”

“I want you out. I don’t love you anymore. I’m not sure if I was ever in love with you, but I don’t want to hurt you anymore than I already have. Please, don’t make this any harder than it already is.”

Y/n’s tear-filled eyes landed on his shoes, his black and white vans that she had always  adored. 

No one had told her it would be this hard to let go. 

She didn’t want to look up and see the broken man that she had created.

The man she had hurt so much, he was willing to lose his happiness for her love. For her to stay.

She felt sad, not because she had lost love, but because she had hurt someone who didn’t deserve to ever feel an ounce of hurt. 

An angel who sat in movie theaters freezing because she would never take a jacket.

An angel who would prefer his arm to go numb than to move his sleeping beauty.

An angel who only ever wanted to make her happy, and he did.

It just wasn’t enough.  

She watched his shoes as they moved away from the bed. 

She watched as his body left the room, his heart staying behind.

She watched as the man who once made her feel like everything, left with nothing.
