kind of unfortunate that so many fantasy epics are also war novels because i will be honest i just do not like war novels that much... the grand clashing of forces is compelling obviously but it requires characters to talk about so much practical battle strategy and while i can get my brain to comprehend all these fantasy maps and kingdoms and borders and battalions and front lines and army movements it takes up. so much space in the book. feels like i'm fighting a war of my own trying to get through it sometimes

All For The Game Reread Thoughts! (Part 3)

My exams are finally over lol so I can get back to my rereads! My Thoughts™ for The King's Men are as follows:

- Neil "I asked" Josten 🙏🙏🙏

- Andrew calling Neil a raccoon 😭 "Exy is the shiny object of your sad little life"

- Ok it literally explains why Neil pretends he's a year older in Millport (so he didn't have to get parental consent for anything)

- I DIDN'T REMEMBER THE COUNTDOWN STARTED ON HIS BIRTHDAY!!!

- Andrew revving the Maserati for Matt has my entire heart 😭

- I remembered Neil had lived in 22 different cities but I didn't realise it was across sixteen countries! I thought it was like,,, six or something 

- The switch to Nathaniel gets me every time

- Ok in book one it said he had black hair when he first joined the foxes and now it's saying he had brown hair,,, I've always pictured him w brown hair when he joined so it's a win for me lol

- Neil: *is having a panic attack*

   Andrew: "Stop it" 😭 

- Neil can speak around nine languages! (not fluently tho)

- In my copy of this book there are two chapter fourteens and two chapter fifteens lmao 😭

- Neil not knowing anything abt chess when Kevin comes back w his tattoo is too funny to me asdfghjkl 

- Neil getting rid of Proust >>>

- The way I COMPLETELY FORGOT that Neil played backliner against Riko omgggg

- I also completely forgot that Neil was there to watch as Ichirou killed Riko

- "This was everything he wanted, everything he needed, and Neil was never letting go" AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH I love this book series so muchhhh

what fandoms do you write in? Star Trek, pretty much exclusively. Only TOS and DS9 so for (and I haven't even really finished anything DS9, I just have plans and WIPs). I may branch out a smidge someday, but I'll probably stay mostly in Star Trek.

how many words have you published in 2024? 4,763. I am a very slow writer lmao. Honestly even answering these questions feels like overkill with so few words published, but c'est la vie. I'll just pretend that I'm a Real Fanfic Author™, and if I do that for long enough, I eventually will be.

what is your greatest achievement this year? Posting anything at all! I had hoped I would, at the start of last year, but I hadn't really expected it. Now, I'm very glad I did (and that I joined Tumblr!).

what are your top three fics you've written this year? I only wrote two! So. Those.

what was your biggest pit of despair moment? I've had a fic that's been sosoclose to done since. like. July. And I have noooot finished it. So, probably that one. I wound up getting wildly discouraged with it, and have just kind of been, um. ignoring it. in the hopes that it'll start feeling salvageable again soon. It's not bad, I know it's not bad, but I can't actually convince myself that it's not bad, and I can't find the right ways to finish the few areas that still need more meat on their bones. I am fighting the urge to just up and delete half of it

what have you learned? That it feels really, really good to receive comments! I've also been slowly figuring out how best to wrangle my brain into Actually Writing, but it's. a work in progress!

did you beta any fics? any faves you want to shout out? So far, I've not had the chance to beta for anyone.

what three fics have you read this year that you love? Um. Oh god. Just three?? I suppose I'll say We can only be who we are by @jennelikejennay, Vision Awry by @walkingstackofbooks, and there may be a power cut (and maybe i love you so) by granspn (who afaik doesn't have a tumblr, but if they do, lmk and I'll tag them too)

(My bookmarks are always a good place to look for fics I've particularly enjoyed, so if ever you are in need of a rec list, that's a good place to start)

what ideas are percolating for next year? Oh, I have so many WIPs. There are a few in there that I'm very excited about, including one where Kirk drags Spock out of Kolinahr early and one where Spock is pining so obviously (to everyone except Kirk). I'd also kind of like to get a DS9 fic or two (and/or my mcspirk fic) published this year, but that relies on me being considerably more prolific than I was this year, so we'll see what happens. (Though, I should be getting ADHD meds at the end of the month, provided that my EKG checks out, which. will hopefully make things a bit easier lmao. I'll need to fight my brain a little less.)

If I am very, very lucky, I'll even be able to get a fic done for the KS Spring Fever. I've got an idea, but, well. Deadlines are rough, and the mind is fickle. I'll do my best (and anyone reading this has permission to hassle me about it and hold me accountable)!

I have returned to my natural state, which is chewing on The Silver Mask like a dog with a bone and a vengeance bc it absolutely should have been the best Magisterium book. It has all the ingredients it needs to blow every other book clear out of the water... but it just doesn't commit all the way to any of them and instead continues to pale in comparison to Iron Trial.

Like.... we have Aaron comes back Wrong, Tamara having to choose between her loyalty to Call and her loyalty to the Magisterium/Assembly, Call really actually wholly taking on the mantle of the Enemy of Death and being faced with the same situations that Constantine was in, getting more up-close time with Master Joseph, Alex, and Anastasia, Jasper is.... there, I think, and Rufus is forced to confront that the system he's spent his life perpetuating fucking sucks!!!! and is actively harming not just his partner but his beloved student!!!!!

HOW is TSM now better than it was!!!!

(book 6 spoilers. very heavy. like two of the big plot twists in this one)

I like book 6 for a lot of reasons but the biggest reason is the absolutely fucking inSANE three chapter run in it that is possibly the worst whiplash I've ever gotten from a book. I am of course talking about the Snake Eyes - Flesh And Blood - The Agatha Quartet run. So we've got

Snake Eyes - the (frankly. insane) reveal that Rafal is the TCY twin's dad. insane. unreal. Why would they do that. who's going to tell Sophie. Mad. Surely we need a Moment to recover from this very important revelatio-

Flesh And Blood - not even kidding it's all of the japeth lore. just like all of it. The first half of the chapter is literally just the events leading up to book 4 from his perspective. So surely the second half is some cool fight scene ri WRONG. ARIC. suddenly turns into (in my opinion) the most devastating chapter in book 6. we get some of the best Japeth Dialogue (tm) (oh??? you genuinely actually would've like given up the crown for him? Aric essentially tells him the best course of action is just to kill himself? right! okay!). it's not actually Aric and japeth like works it out or whatever but okay. okay. I'm prepared this time. Third devastating chapter. I can deal with-

The Agatha Quartet: haha guys they don't know which one's the real Agatha!!!! and Sophie's got to work it out!!!!!!! by asking them silly little questions!!!!!!!!!!!! this is a normal chapter progression!!!!!!!! This is so fun and silly!!!! im in literal tears

Absolute madness. This is why book 6 is second in my ranking

You know how Percy Jackson's whole vibe is supposed to be like 'skater boy' which is exceptionally close in middle school culture to emo kids and what I'm saying is that the funniest thing that the tv series could do is to give Walker straightened black hair for one season to achieve the iconic percy look and excuse it as him going through his emo phase and he just comes back the next summer looking normal again.

Seeing as the big high point of Dragonflight is the relationship between Lessa and Mardra, it’s a bit of a shame that the conflict in Dragonquest doesn’t actually center around the collapse of that relationship
