(We had a romcom month in Nov and y’all are gonna be subject to my bs. This one is While You Were Sleeping inspired)
Steve groaned when there was knocking.
“Tommy, for the last time, no, you can’t move in, no I’m not in black underwear, and no--” He swung the door open to a smiling Billy, one eyebrow raised teasingly. Steve flushed. “Sorry, thought you were Tommy.” He said, shoving his hands into his pajama pockets. Billy chuckled.
“Happens all the time,” he said. He stood there a moment before ducking his head and licking his lips, wry smile on his face. “Can I come in?”
“Oh, yeah!” Steve chirped, moving out of the way so Billy could enter. He moved into the living room, letting Billy follow. “Sorry,” he said with a wince, gesturing to the mess. Billy shrugged. It was quiet a moment before Billy cleared his throat and pointed at Steve’s chest.
“Deciding on ties?” He asked. Steve looked down, looked at the navy blue, dark green, and coral neckties he had on.
“Oh,” Steve chuckled, pulling them off. “Yeah, just uh, just seeing what will work. For tomorrow.” Steve stared at Billy, taking him in. Billy was looking at the clothes Steve had laid out, at the options he’d pulled out for the impromptu wedding. It made his heart clench, made his lungs feel heavy. He wanted Billy to say something. “What did--”
“I’m sorry,” he said, face set. “For all the trouble I gave you.” Steve’s words were stuck in his throat as Billy spoke. “I’m gonna be really happy to, to call you my brother in law,” he said, smiling at Steve. It didn’t reach his eyes quite right and Steve wanted him to fucking say something. Billy hummed softly and pulled a small package out of his pocket. “Oh, I got you a wedding gift,” he said.
“Yeah?” Steve’s voice was soft and Billy looked up at him through his lashes. Steve gently took the present, unwrapping it carefully.
“I saw it in the window on a job and just--”
“Billy,” Steve breathed. It was a snow globe. Nothing fancy, but it was of Florence. Steve shook it, watching the snow fall. “Billy I--”
“Anyway--”
“Tell me a reason why I shouldn’t marry Heather,” he said, cutting Billy off. “Tell me a reason and I won’t.” Billy froze, gaze sad. But, he didn’t say anything. Didn’t utter a peep. Steve gripped the snow globe tighter and smiled, nodding reflexively to the rejection, trying to push through the way it felt like his heart was breaking. “Okay. Yeah.”
“Steve,” Billy said, voice soft.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, okay? At the--” Steve took a breath. “At the ceremony.” Billy looked like he wanted to say something, wanted to say a lot of things. But again, he didn’t. Just nodded and put his hands in his pockets.
“Yeah,” he replied, voice quiet. “Tomorrow.” Steve shut the door behind Billy as he left, leaning his forehead against it to cry. He took shuddery breaths, tried not to cry the day before his wedding, but for once, he couldn’t stop the tears.
--
Steve couldn’t believe he was late. Couldn’t believe he was going to be late to his own wedding. Yeah, maybe he wasn’t looking forward to it as much as he would have been a month ago, but he didn’t want to be late. He skidded into the hallway and quickly found the room where everything had been set up. Hop and Joyce were standing and talking, Murray was just sitting and watching the show, and Billy--
Billy was standing and waiting on Heather’s side. Because of course he was her Man of Honor. Steve walked in, waving. He made it halfway down the aisle before he realized he’d left his jacket on. So he ran back, put it on the hook, and walked down the aisle towards the family again.
“Finally!” Hopper boomed, smiling. “You didn’t get cold feet did you?” Steve chuckled and shook his head.
“No, no. Let’s uh, let’s do this.” Steve nodded to the rest of the family and looked at Billy. Billy looked away from him as soon as they locked eyes and Steve once more wished for a lot of things.
Music began and Steve watched Heather walk down the aisle, Hopper leading her along. They were smiling and Heather pulled her IV along, beaming at Steve. He smiled back, thinking about how she and Billy had the same dimples.
Then the priest had started to speak and Steve looked in Heather’s eyes and--
“I object,” he said quietly.
“He what?” Hopper said, leaning forward. Heather just blinked, tilting her head. The priest gave him a quizzical look.
“We haven’t gotten to that part yet,” he said.
“I’m sorry but I can’t do this,” Steve said, letting go of Heather’s hands and stepping back. “I--” He looked at the family. “I’ve been lying to you. To all of you. And I can’t go through with this when I love--” He looked at Billy, heart slamming against his ribcage. Billy stared, jaw slack.
“Billy?” Hopper groaned. “Boy, what did you do?” Billy snapped out of his shock, furrowing his brow.
“What did I do? I didn’t do anything!”
“He didn’t!” Steve cut in. Everyone fell silent again. “He didn't. This is all on me, okay? I’m not. I’ve never been Heather’s fiancee.” The family collectively blinked. “There was a miscommunication when she arrived and I didn’t correct them and then you guys came and--” He choked up a little, anxiety and regret filling him. “You were all so lovely,” he breathed out. “A big, loving family that annoyed each other and ragged on each other but still loved each other at the end of the day. I never… My parents stopped living at home when I was 13. They didn’t stay at home with me for more than a week at a time. I’ve never had real, good family in my life and…” He looked at them, all in varying degrees of shock. “I fell in love with all of you,” he said, voice soft but strong. Sure. “And I was selfish and held onto it for too long. Let this keep going when Heather doesn’t even know me.” He looks at her then, finding her smiling, even if it was sad. Steve had let go of her hands during his little speech, but he took one again. “I’m sorry,” he said to her. “It was unfair to you and-- I’m just sorry.” Steve looked at Billy, who seemed unsure if he was shocked, angry, sad, or happy. Steve understood that. “I’m sorry to you too, because somewhere along the way of falling in love with your family, I fell in love with you as well. And it wasn’t fair to… To want that when you didn’t know the truth.”
Before anyone could say anything else, the door burst open.
“I object!” A short, redheaded woman yelled from the doorway.
“Anyone else?” The priest asked, annoyed and ready to go home.
“Who are you?” Hopper demanded, brows drawn together.
“I’m Heather’s real fiancee!” She snapped, stomping down the aisle. Heather’s eyes bugged out.
“Carol? You said no!” She protested.
“Yeah, well I changed my mind--”
“What the fuck?” Joyce mumbled, pressing a dainty hand to her forehead. The family got mixed up in the commotion and Steve quickly slipped out before anyone could pay him any mind. It was easier that way. He could slip out of their lives as easily as he slipped in and let them get back to normal.
--
Steve scratched a line on his notepad with his pen, cheek resting on his hand. The day was slow, most people quietly bustling their way along in the cold of Chicago. He sighed, letting his head fall forward to the desk.
“Listen,” Robin said from behind him, spinning around in her chair. “It’s literally painful watching you mope. Let’s get drinks tonight or something.” Steve didn’t look over his shoulder, just shrugged.
“Not feeling it,” he mumbled. Robin sighed. She opened her mouth to say more, maybe snark some sense back into him, when she saw a group approaching. Steve still had his head down, shoulders slumped as he tried to make himself small.
It had been a long week since everything and Steve was tired. Was tired, was sad, and didn’t really want to exist. He’d been looking at plane tickets while holding Billy’s snow globe like some sort of creep for most of the week. If he imagined being able to bring Billy along, no one else needed to know. But it was the only thing he could think of to do. To take some steps to enjoy his life, even if he had to do it alone.
He really didn’t want to do it alone.
There was a clink in front of him and he grabbed the change, not looking up or even saying his customary hello. Once he had the pass printed, he slipped it back under the window and a hand quickly placed itself on top of his. Steve’s breath caught. He knew those fingers. Knew those rings. He’d memorized them.
Blue eyes were gazing down at him when he looked up, mouth opening in shock. Billy smiled at him, small and hopeful. Hopper and Joyce were doing a particularly bad job of hiding behind the pillar and watching. Murray and Max had foregone trying to hide and were just watching, smiling at the sight. Steve’s mind was racing. Were they here to tell him off? Were they mad? Were they--
“Wanna go on a trip with me, pretty boy?” Billy asked, voice gentle and loving and everything Steve had been wanting to hear for the past month. He gaped, mind working too slow to catch up. Billy looked a little nervous at his silence, obviously chewing on the inside of his lip.
“Oh my god,” Robin said as the silence dragged on too long. “He so fucking does. Please, take his moping ass on a date so I don’t have to drown him myself.”
“Robin!” Steve hissed, turning red.
“You’ve literally been depressed all week and it’s been bringing my vibe down.” Her look softened as she smirked, small and just at Steve. “Go get your man. I’ll cover for you.”
Steve could have kissed her.
Instead, he stood, shoving the door to the booth open and jumping the turnstile to cup Billy’s face and pull him into a kiss. Billy’s hands settled on his waist as he smiled against Steve’s lips. Joyce let out a Yes! that was probably louder than it should have been, but Steve didn’t care. Didn’t think about anything except the lips pressed against his. When he pulled back, Billy was smiling, bright and happy and Steve loved him.
“I’d go anywhere with you, Blue.”

===
The song fades out.
You reach down to your Walkman beside you and rewind, then play again.
Oh... I know I'm unloveable You don't have to tell me I don't have much in my life But take it - it's yours I don't have much in my life But take it - it's yours Oh...
The bed under you is littered with tissues and your eyes just started to dry. It’s 10 in the morning and you hadn’t slept a wink. You’ve been listening to the Smiths for the past 8 hours and there’s no end in sight. The sun shines brightly into your room and you wonder what Steve is doing. You wonder if he’s sorry. You wonder if he meant it. You wonder if you’ll ever get your friendship back.
I know I'm unloveable You don't have to tell me Oh, message received Loud and clear Loud and clear I don't have much in my life But take it - it's yours
Through your headphones, you hear the phone ring. You don’t flinch, however, choosing to let it go until it stops. But it starts back up again, and for whatever reason, it seems louder and more urgent. You sigh and rip your headphones off, heading downstairs to the receiver on the wall. You clear your throat and roll your shoulders back, expecting it to be Steve, calling to be an asshole again.
“Hello?”
“Y/N?”
It’s Veronica.
“Veronica, hey,” you say, uncertain. “Are you alright?”
“It’s Steve,” she says tearfully into the phone. Your heart drops to your toes and you lean against the wall. You hear her sniffle before she continues. “He’s gone.”
“What do you mean, he’s gone?” you breathe.
“We got a wellness check this morning to go to his house, his front door was open all night.”
Your heart lurches up now, right into your throat, and you feel sick. Did you leave the door open? No way, you remember closing it purposefully. You locked it, too.
“Chief sent Callahan to check it out, and he’s saying it doesn’t look so good.” Veronica is openly crying now. “He said – he said it looks like there was a struggle.”
“Wait – Chief sent Callahan?!” Anger flares in you; Steve was your partner. You should have been called, not Callahan. And Callahan was virtually incompetent. It all left a bad taste in your mouth.
“Yeah, he sent Callahan,” she says, confusion lacing her voice. “He said he didn’t want anyone else to go except Callahan, Powell, and some of the other guys. Y/N, you gotta get over there, for my sake. I’m freaking out over here.”
“Chief doesn’t want me to go?”
“Doesn’t seem like it.”
Your eyes narrow as you stare at the wallpaper of your house, trying to swallow your rage. “I’ll head right over there, Veronica, stand by.”
You slam the phone down and run to get dressed. You don’t even bother brushing your hair or your teeth, you just take off, anxiety clutching you. You are relieved that he lives so close, so it’s only a five-minute drive to get there, if that. The place is swarming with cop cars, sealed off with yellow tape. The neighbors are standing on their porches, watching with worry. It pisses you off, but you don’t have time for that. You duck under the tape and head towards the door.
The door had obviously been kicked in – you can see the wood splintered. When you walk inside, it’s chaos. There are multiple policemen there, and some of the men in black suits who were at Brimborn when the body was found. You nearly collapse. You grab onto the wall as you survey the room. You see a photographer photographing the weapons Steve had dropped last night, and you laugh weakly. You push yourself off the wall and walk over.
“Those are Steve’s,” you say. “He had those last night.”
Callahan, who was standing nearby, turns to look at you. “You look like hell, Y/N. Have you slept?”
“Why didn’t anyone call me?” you hiss. “Steve is my partner. I only found out from Veronica.”
“Chief didn’t want a new person on this case,” he says, shrugging.
You scoff and gesture to the room, filled with people who had never been on a case before. Callahan shrugs again. “Maybe Chief is a misogynist.”
You want to punch him right in the face but stop yourself. With a heavy sigh, you start to tell him about last night.
“Steve and I – we hung out last night,” you recall. “He uh – he showed me these weapons, and he just – he put them down, here. And then he was going to bed, and I left, and I know I locked the door, and I know that I shut it.”
Callahan nods. “What time did you leave?”
“Maybe two?”
“Call came in around seven,” he explains. “Neighbor saw his door was wide open but that his car was still in the drive.”
You shake your head in disbelief. “I don’t understand –“
But then it hits you.
They probably followed you from the bar. They probably waited until you left to go grab him.
And his bat was in your car, his weapons on the living room floor. He had no protection.
It was your fault.
Feeling sick, you grab onto Callahan, who slowly sits you on the floor. His face is contorted in confusion, and a few other police, including Powell, surround you, brows furrowed.
“You don’t look too good, Y/N,” Powell says, concerned. “You should head home.”
“No,” you say, dragging yourself up. “I’m going to the station.”
===
You whip the main door open, flying past Veronica, who gets up to trail after you. You hold your hand up to her and she relents, heading back to her desk and sniffling. You burst into Chief’s office, and he’s simply sitting there, smoking a cigar. The rage comes up hot and quick, and you can’t help yourself when you fly off the handle.
“What the hell is your problem?!”
Chief sighs, sitting his cigar down. You slam the door shut. “He was my partner, Chief. My partner. And you – you call Callahan to investigate? Are you joking? Do you think this is some sick fucking joke?”
He is silent, still, letting you continue your tirade.
“Even if he wasn’t my partner, you know he was my best friend. My best friend is missing, and you don’t even have the – the thought to call me? I have to wait for Veronica to call me, crying, because you sent the most incompetent person to investigate? I was with Steve last night, I know he -“
“You were with him last night?”
Your cheeks burn. “Yes. I saw him last night.”
Chief leans back in his chair. He analyzes you, and you hate it. You feel like a bug under a magnifying glass.
“How do I know it wasn’t you who did something?”
“Are you joking?” you ask, offended.
“What did you do last night?”
You take in a sharp breath, calculating if you should tell him. Steve thinks Chief is behind it all, and maybe he is – but what else are you supposed to do? It might be important that you were at that bar last night. Maybe it did have something to do with his disappearance.
You swallow hard. “Last night, we went to that bar on the edge of town.”
Chiefs face is unwavering.
“And I think – I think someone might have… followed us from there.”
“So, you two, underaged, went to a bar last night.”
You nod once.
“Why?”
You don’t know how to tell him without outright saying hey, we think you are in kahoots with bad people and are trying to destroy the town. So you go with, “We think people at the bar might have had something to do with the body.”
“You two were doing your own investigations.”
You nod once, again.
“Behind my back.”
Your cheeks burn once more. “You know that Steve thought it wasn’t a –“
“Steve has been through a lot,” Chief says. “Steve doesn’t know –“
“You never even gave him a chance!” you cry. “You brushed him off and now he’s missing, and you can’t even bother with an actual investigation –“
“You will not talk to me like that!” he roars, standing up.
His anger only fuels you, though. “You’re a real asshole, you know that? You know everyone wishes it was still Hopper, don’t you?”
“You’re too emotional, you know that?” he asks, glaring. “Don’t think I didn’t hear about what you did to Tommy Hagan.”
The color drains from your face and your heart lurches. After a moment you ask, “What are you talking about?”
“Carol Perkins came in the night it happened,” Chief spits. “Told me that you used your submission techniques on a civilian, all because he insulted your boyfriend.”
You scoff, but it’s a bitter feeling to be reminded that he isn’t yours. “Steve is not my –“
“And now you’re here, yelling at me, your boss, your mentor, because you think I’m incompetent?”
You can only stare at him in silence.
“You’re too emotional, Y/N,” he repeats, sitting back down. “I tried. I tried to make this work. I wasn’t going to say anything about what you did to Hagan. I thought it was a one-time thing. But emotional people don’t make good cops. Y/N. Your emotional outbursts aren’t very becoming of a competent investigator.”
Your stomach drops, and you know what’s coming.
“You’re fired.”
It’s silent. You feel like you left your body. You can hardly breathe or think.
“You can come pack up your things tomorrow.”
Your eyes look to the floor. You push back tears and press your tongue to the roof of your mouth. You turn on your heel quickly and walk out, slamming the door shut behind you again. It feels like your world is flipped. You lost your best friend and your chances at a future all in the span of an hour. Now you couldn’t even help the investigation, because you were too emotional. Chief was right.
But you weren’t going to stand back and let Steve be hurt or killed, wherever he was. You were going to find him, with or without the station’s help.
You pull the door open and step outside, but Veronica catches you. You look back at her. She has tears in her eyes, and they are bloodshot. Her hair is a mess. It strikes you that she probably looks like a mirror image of you. Another girl who loves and cares about Steve, wants him safe and sound, wants him found.
She suddenly shoves something into your hand. “Take this.”
Your brows furrow and you look down. It’s a plastic bag with a napkin in it. The napkin.
Your eyes shoot back up to hers. “What – how –“
“It was in Chief’s desk,” she says, voice thick with anxiety. Her eyes dart around as if she’s scared to be caught – and she is. “Found it this morning before he came in. I figured – if Steve thought it was so important – so I looked for it –“
Your head spins. Chief did take this napkin out of the evidence room. He hid it. Steve was right. Holy shit, Steve was right.
“Veronica,” you say, grabbing her shoulders. Your eyes are hardened, determined. “I promise I’m going to find him.”
She nods and gives you a quick, tight hug, before heading back inside. You shove the plastic bag into your pocket and rip out of the parking lot, heading towards your house. You know you need to find out what happened last year. You need to figure out what Steve was hinting at all those nights you spent patrolling.
You run to your phone, and it rings right on time.
“Hello?” you ask, breathless.
“Where have you been? We’ve been calling you for the past hour.” It’s Robin, and she’s pissed, but her voice as an anxious edge to it. “It’s all over the news – what happened? What’s going on? Do you know anything?”
“Robin,” you choke out. “I need you to tell me what happened last year.”
She pauses for a long time. “Meet at Mike’s house tonight. Five o’clock.”
===
Everyone gathers into the basement. Whether you had information or not, you planned on going back to the bar to figure out what the hell goes on behind closed doors. You had changed into another outfit, leaving your uniform in a heap on the floor of your bedroom. You tucked your knife back into your garter, the same as you did the night before. You remember the feeling of Steve’s fingers on your bare skin and swallow the feeling of rejection that sits in your throat.
Truth be told, you were about to lose it. The emotions of everything that happened were just sitting within you, waiting to be given just enough attention to activate the waterworks. You were exhausted, too, coming up on 36 hours being awake, but you couldn’t rest. Not until you found Steve.
You clap once to get everyone’s attention and start. “They put Callahan on the case, and they fired me. Steve’s house was a mess, so there were signs of struggle, but that’s all I know in regard to the investigation.”
“You got fired?” Robin asks.
“Doesn’t matter,” you sigh. “You all know we’ve been patrolling, right?”
They nod.
You reach into your jacket pocket and pull out the plastic bag Veronica had given you. “We followed Edwards to a bar on the edge of town a while back, and last night we went to it. Steve pointed out this private lounge, and there’s a side entrance that Edwards went through the other night. I assume it’s for the lounge.” You sigh. “I don’t know what happens inside. But I do know that Edwards tried to hide this piece of evidence that was on the body – it’s a napkin with the bar’s logo on it.” You pause. “I think Chief and this bar are up to something. I think whoever runs this bar took Steve.”
Everyone is silent.
“But Steve hasn’t given me a lot of information. I know he was involved in the fire at Starcourt, but he keeps insisting the same “bad people” who did that are behind all of this. And I don’t know what he means.”
A murmur falls over the room, and you clap again. “I need you guys to tell me what the hell happened last year, because that’s the only way I’m going to be able to get to the bottom of this. Steve was right about some things, so I – he’s probably right about this, too.”
It’s silent for a moment, and then a cacophony of voices start, mixing together, making your head hurt. You hear “Russians”, “mall”, “Will”, “mindflayer”, “Billy” – all kinds of words that made no sense together.
“Hey, hey!” you say, clapping your hands together. “One at a time, please!”
“Last year, the mall didn’t burn down,” Dustin says. “The Russians had a base underneath it –“
“And Steve, Dustin, Lucas’ sister and I stumbled on it –“
Max cuts Robin off. “And the Russians opened the Gate – it’s a portal to the Upside Down –“
“Which is where intergalactic monsters reside,” Lucas explains. “And they were going to use the Upside Down for warfare, I guess, but –“
“My mom and Hopper called this guy, Doc Owens, and he came with the military and shut it down,” Will finishes.
You stare, mouth open. Finally, you say, “So – what? What does Dungeons and Dragons monsters and – places – have to do with this?”
“That’s just what we call them,” Mike says impatiently. “Keep up.”
“So there’s an intergalactic portal in Hawkins,” you say slowly. “that the Russians opened. And they were going to use its powers for… warfare?”
El nods silently.
You nod slowly, trying to keep up, as Mike said. “Steve said that the same company that built Starcourt built this bar, and Mayor Kline signed off on it. So Steve must have thought that the Russians are also running this bar that the Chief frequents.”
Everyone nods in agreement.
You curse under your breath. “Ch- Edwards must have known about Steve being onto him and wanted him gone. So… we all can agree the Russians probably have him, and Edwards is probably working with them?”
Everyone nods again.
“Phenomenal, that’s just great,” you mutter, running your hand down your face. You can’t believe god damn Russians are in your town, you can't believe Steve dealt with them before, and you can’t believe they kidnapped him - or killed him - because he was actually onto them. But it all makes sense now; Steve’s apprehension on letting people in. They’d probably been watching him for a while, and he was trying to protect you from being in trouble with them. Steve’s anxiety, Steve’s inability to believe everything is fine. Why he wanted to be a cop in the first place. It all suddenly adds up.
Everyone is silent for a moment before Max pipes up. “That was a classic Steve move. You know, you and Steve really would go well together.”
It stings.
“Yeah,” Lucas adds. “Why aren’t you together?”
It hurts.
“That, um… that ship sailed last night, actually,” you confess, throat dry. “I tried to... but it didn’t work out.”
Dustin gasps softly. “You told him you liked him?”
“Can we please get back to the rescue mission?” you groan, imagining Robin telling you told you so.
“What’s the plan?” El asks quietly.
“I’m going to go back to the bar and try to get into their private lounge,” you say, starting to pace again. “Then I can figure out what happens there, at least. And I can knock it off the list of places to look.” You sigh. “That’s my only lead right now.”
“What do we do?” Dustin asks.
You turn and look at him, brows furrowed. “You stay here.”
“No way,” Robin says, pushing off the wall she was leaning on. “We’re not going to sit here while you go for him. We are helping.”
Everyone agrees, and you huff, irritated.
“Look, if you want to help, you stay here and help me,” you say. “Will, could you get Owen’s number?”
“I mean, I can ask my mom –“
“Great. Does anyone have a walkie I can borrow?”
Lucas hands you his and you nod in thanks. “We communicate through these.”
“No way!” Robin says. “We aren’t going to sit here –“
“Robin –“
“No!”
You have an intense stare down with her. You try to use your eyes to convey they severity of the situation. But the truth is that you have no idea what they’ve seen, the terrors they lived through. You only know a third of the story, if that.
“You’re not the only one who loves him,” Robin says quietly. “We love him, too. He’s our friend. Friends have each other’s backs.”
You stare at her for another long moment before sighing. You bite your cheek and think for a moment. “Alright, here’s how it’s going to go.”
You lay out the plan. Dustin and Robin will come with you to the bar. You wait until nighttime to move. They’re going to distract the bouncers at the private entrance, allowing you to slip inside. When Robin and Dustin lose the attention of the bouncers, they go back to the car. All parties have a walkie to communicate with. Will is to get Owen’s call number and have it on standby at the Wheeler’s house with the rest of the gang. If there is something bad happening, he calls and alerts them. But he waits either for your signal or for half an hour to pass with no contact. The others are irritated that they can’t come – like, ridiculously irritated – but El says that it’s “halfway happy.”
“Are you sure this is going to work?” Mike asks. “Can you do this on your own?”
“I’ve been wrong before,” you say with a bitter smile. “But I’ve got the training.”
You go over the plan a few more times before having Robin and Dustin come out with you to your car. They seem content with their close involvement, and you hope they don’t try to manipulate you into letting them do more. Dustin opens the back door and gasps.
“The bat,” he says softly, then looks at you. “What’s it doing in here?”
“He left it in here last night,” you whisper, guilt running through you again. You squeeze your eyes shut. “Maybe if he had it, if I ran it in to him….”
“Hey,” Robin says softly, gripping your arm. Her gaze his warm and comforting, and for the first time in the past day, you smile.
“You didn’t know,” she says. “You didn’t know. It’s alright. We’re going to help him now.”
You take the bat out and place it in the trunk. “I really hope he’s where I think he is.”
“One step at a time,” Robin says gently.
You shut the trunk and straighten, looking at your new partners. They’re ready and willing to help; smart and cunning, quick and trusty. You sigh and hold your hand out.
“Let’s do this,” you say, and they pile their hands on yours, Dustin smiling toothily and Robin smiling gently.
You hope you don’t screw this up.

no one dies and everyone's gay au
Nancy finds Barb when she gets stuck in the Upside Down when she's in the forest with Jonathan (don't ask me about the logistics) and so Steve ends up finding Jonathan and Barb in Nancy's room? And he's confused because at first he'd just seen Jon and thought Nancy was cheating but then he saw Barb walk into the room? (traumatic sleepover time! except Jon stays on the ground and Barb and Nance cuddle on the bed bc they're best friends and BARB WAS MISSING FOR LIKE TWO DAYS I THINK? she deserves snugs)
But Tommy and Carol started talking about how Nancy was probably sleeping with both, everyone knew Barb was the biggest d*ke in Hawkins, Nancy probably got curious about the other side!
He doesn't necessarily agree but still doesn't stop Tommy from spray painting the theater (because Nancy still lied to him? Lying generally meant there was something? going on? idk Steve's just confused and a little hurt rn)
The rest of the season goes pretty much the same, Barb's just there trying to not die and trying to help the Gang™ find Will and fight this bitch ass demogorgon (I don't think she's really be part of the Nancy and Jonathan luring it to the house and fighting it, she'd help with set up and the plan but I think she'd fuck right off when it comes down to facing it, she's had enough monsters for one life time thx)
But she'd so wanna help get Will out so she's there with Joyce and everyone talking to El while she's in the bath finding Will and talking Hop and Joyce about the Upside Down
(and she's been to the hospital, she didn't get a face sucking monster thing so she recovered quicker? idk don't ask logistics again lmao)
But she and Will end up getting along and sometimes when she's hanging out with Nancy and the party comes over she'll say hi to Will and like ruffle his hair
(also I want a little scene after the big monster hunting trip scene where a) Nancy and Jonathan explain everything to Steve and b) where Steve sees Barb again and pulls her into the biggest hug and starts like apologizing for not paying attention that night and for letting her get taken and even though she assured him it wasn't his fault he still feels guilty about it, it was his house, he should have helped her bandage her hand or something? idk but this right here is the beginning of the Barb/Steve friendship and the start of the "fall of King Steve")
cue s2
and so the four get really close, Jonathan and Steve are actually friends (idk what s2 was pulling but they're friends) and Barb talks to Nancy about Steve and Jonathan and Nancy ends up breaking up with Steve way earlier (bc you know none of that drama would have happened if Barb was there so)
But they're all still good friends, Steve's cool about the break up, and Nancy and Jonathan get together but it's not like right after? so it's all chill and they all went through a dramatic experience together so they remain close knit yeah
and Barb eventually comes out to them (everyone's supportive obviously) and Steve's is ready to throw down with anyone for her
cue Billy
the four of them are sizing up the new guy, Nancy doesn't really care, Jonathan thinks his hair is a little ridiculous (which I mean, that first day? when he steps out of the Camaro? yeah it was a lil rough), Barb can see right through his macho bullshit, and Steve? has a little bi meltdown. bc this kid has definitely had boy crushes before and knows he likes both (kid listens to queen of course he knew he was bi lmao)
blah blah blah s2 happens, Barb, Steve, and Billy have the same English class and Billys generally quiet during school, kinda stand-off-ish, only really bugs people during gym/basketball, but he literally sits in the back and does absolutely nothing during class and still somehow has the highest grade
(FUCK him and Barb get paired for a project and she fucking calls him out? like she's just like you're gay I'm lesbian you can cut the crap around me and they become...not friends? but they have solidarity, they're cool)
and I'm a slut for this trope but BILLY FIGHTS DEMODOGS WITH THEM lmao he hears Max sneak out and follows her and finds her in the junkyard armouring up a bus with fucking Harrington and a couple of nerds? and like the sun is setting and he needs to get Max home so he's like "Maxine! I don't know what the fuck this is and I don't fucking care, we gotta go!" and the four are like yelling at him to either leave or get in the bus! and he's so confused, I'm not here to play games Max! and Steve's running out of the bus with a FUCKING NAIL BAT WHAT THE FUCK HARRINGTON? And Steve's like behind you! and swings at a demodog. Billy has a borderline panic attack before he finds like a fender or exhaust pipe or whatever and starts swinging too
the dogs run away and Billy rounds onto Steve like what the living shit was that? and Steve has to explain everything with Dustin and Lucas interrupting and Max shrugging and trying to understand too? it's a mess
s2 continues with Billy and with HOPPER NOT BEING ABLE TO STAND HIM bc he's caught him speeding and underage drinking and shit and Billy's nervous as hell around cops which makes him mouthy and ITS A MESS
they're all at Joyce's (Barb's there too bc Will's possessed and they need to check up on her too? and she's concerned for Will anyway yeah she's in this too) and El shows up and Steve and Billy are just like what? another one? who the fuck? like Steve heard about her but this isn't a tiny child without hair??? idk it's funny
BILLY WITH AN AXE IN THE TUNNELS
(obviously Steve isn't passed out and the kids don't drive the car, it's Billy's awful impulse control that leads to them going into the tunnels)
okay I couldn't decide where to put Barb here? so I left her with Steve and Billy to babysit and she ends up in the tunnels too? and she's def handling it better than the boys are fuck yeah
Steve has his bat and is in front and Billy found an axe in the pile of shit from the Byers' shed and he pulls up the end
it's awesome
yada yada Steve and Billy end up becoming weirdly good friends by the end and he's good with him and Barb, idk about Nance and Jon but eh
s3 now
Billy ends up getting two jobs; lifeguard and cook at Benny's (bc he's alive too, fight me bitches this is the ultimate fix it) and Barb ends up working as a waitress there too (and working together builds the weirdest bonds so they are besties now)
everything in s3 is pretty much the same but with diner scenes too? and like all the Hawkins moms swarm Benny's too and leave lipstick stains on their kitchen tips and "send my compliments to the chef *wink*"
Billy eats it up but Barb can tell he also kinda hates it bc he's barely 18 and not even remotely into women and it makes him super uncomfortable but publicly he "loves" it (he starts wearing tank tops to the pool and tries to hide out in the kitchen but it really doesn't work)
he still gets caught up with the mind flayer but it's not bc he's about to sleep with Karen bc ew, idk why he's driving out by the warehouse idk maybe he's out on a drive bc he can't sleep yeah
anyway he gets caught up but like he knows, or kind of knows, what this is and calls in sick to both jobs and talks to Hopper bc WHAT THE FUCK isn't the gate closed? I got face fucked my an interdimensional monster so unless you know where the fuck that came from?? and they deal with it earlier (most of the shit still happens but it's less...messy? like Hop and Joyce are more involved in the Billy shit and Steve knows about it?)
Steve still gets caught up with the Russians (I don't think he'd have a chance to tell anyone (specifically Hopper) bc he finds out about Billy then the elevator stuff happens like right after and yada yada)
so for most of the season it's them trying to actually help Billy! and they end up saving a lot of people? (specifically Heather bc she was really nice to Billy and I want he to live fight me it's my au)
but enough people get melted and shit that starcourt still get destroyed blah blah blah!
but Billy makes it and so does Hop and Alexie (no one dies au) and they all end up doing the thing in the mall like they did in the shed with Will? like breaking Billy out? Barb talks about working at the diner and their secret and Steve talks about them hanging out and playing basketball and the tunnels and Max talks about Billy buying her a new board and them scream-singing along to ACDC in the Camaro and the kids mention him giving them rides and shit and yeah! El talks about his mom and that's it! Joyce and Hop close the gate while Billy's holding the one arm (he doesn't get stabbed in the chest, as cool as that scar would be, no...but he gets some on his hands and upper arms and his sides?)
(also Billy's drinking like bleach rn so they try and reverse that as much as possible while he's possessed so that he has a better recovery later bc no! chlorine is not good for you! and Billy tries so hard to not drink it but sometimes he can't fucking stop? idk but he has a support system now!)
and Robin came out to Steve and Steve comes out to her too? like kinda? he alludes to it vaguely bc he's so not ready to be out to anyone FUCK
And Billy comes out to Steve (he was planning on doing it earlier that summer but shit happened)
and Robin becomes friends with everyone (ITS ROBIN X BARB HOURS BITCHES)
(OKAY small like side shit? Benny and Hopper have known each other for years and Benny's like one of the only registered foster parents on Hawkins so he ends up fostering a lot of wayward kids while Hop figures out legal stuff (he hasn't adopted anyone yet but him and his husband (yeah Benny's gay deal with it) really want to? they just haven't yet, all the kids they take care of end up in their care temporarily) BUT Hop finds out about Billy and Max's home life (I know a lot of people write that Neil wouldn't hit Max but...nah son not how that works? idk but he needs to get them out? and Neil's bad to Susan too (he's the worst to Billy but still bad to Max and Susan) anyway Hop helps Susan leave Neil (it takes a while and Billy and Max end up with Benny for a little bit while the divorce is going down and all the legal shit yeah it's safer out of the house rn) long story short Billy ends up staying with Benny after everything and ends up getting adopted (they're like we know you're 18 and you don't need a guardian but if you want we can be your dads? and Billys like yeah sure that'd be nice and yeah) Hop ends up being a weird like uncle figure? idk like I said him and Benny are close and they both adopted kids so yeah? and Billy ends up considering El his little sister and he still visits Max and Susan and yeah?)
ANYWAY everything kind of calms down, Hop and Joyce get together (I just realized I forgot about Bob so...idk I guess this isn't an everyone survives au? no no that's weird um idk him and Joyce end up breaking up idk why) but yeah Hop and Joyce get together and like it's kind of fast but they've been in love for a long time so it's kind of fine? like idk but yeah
Barb and Robin get together (ITS FUCKING CUTE they go to aquariums and have paint dates where they sit on some old sheets and paint while listening to Robin's records ITS CUTE!)
STEVE COMES OUT TO EVERYONE! he definitely cries bc fuck he was scared! bc he likes both and he wasn't sure if that was a thing or whatever for a while and Billy's like oh yeah, like David Bowie or Freddie Mercury? and that's when Steve's cries bc oh thank God you guys get it and you're cool with it oh fuck and YEAH
UM Max is bi too, Will comes out as gay (listen I know none of this is like 80's realistic but everyone's gay and alive and happy, fuck off)
Um it takes forever for Billy and Steve to get together, it's awful. like Barb and Robin have to deal with their pining and shit? and like Robin hears about it from Steve at work and Barb hears about it from Billy at the diner and they put their knowledge together and make a Plan ™
it's like elaborate and dramatic (shut up they're all like 18-19) and shit? BUT LMAO okay one day they're all hanging out at Steve's (bc I've also hopped aboard the neglectful parents train sorry) and idk Steve and Billy are there before Robin and Barb are so the girls walk in on them arguing over whatever and like Billy's talking really fast and Steve's talking with his hands and idk what it's about but Billy ends up yelling that he loves him BUT THEY KEEP ARGUING FOR LIKE A SOLID MINUTE AFTER THAT BEFORE IT HITS THEM and Steve gets all quiet and is just like you love me? and Billy doesn't fucking know what to do?? he's like bright red and frozen and Robin and Barb are by the door trying to not like break the spell (bc it's been months guys) and Billy's like of course I do asshole and Robin thinks Steve's about to have a panic attack but he like rushes forward and cups Billy's face and kisses him senseless and it's like the best thing Robin and Barb have ever seen
and they're resting their foreheads together, Steve's still holding Billy's face and Billy has his hands on Steve's chest it's really tender but Robin's like yeah congrats and shit but you guys ruined our Plan™! and she gives them a long ass rundown of their elaborate scheme and Steve and Billy are like still touching and bumping into each other as they listen and Barb interrupts and says that this was better and Robin rolls her eyes but agrees
and they're watching a movie or whatever, cuddling in their respective couples and Steve fucking jumps up randomly and rounds on Billy like hey woah fuck I love you too, I didn't say that earlier! and Billy's looking up at him like yeah I know that asshole and yeah
#okay this is s u p e r long sorry#but also not#harringrove#robin x barb#fix-it#stranger things#the ultimate fix-it#pls ask me stuff about this im so down to ramble about this?#pls#fic#my stuff#also idk how to do keep reading thungs so sorry 😬#also i barely mention nancy jon the kids or the adults#this is about my gay quad#buckland#bobin#my writings

The Winding Road - Part Two: Pretty Boy Prospect
Previously (masterlist)
Summary: Queen of the roads, that’s what they used to call little Miss Y/N, well, that’s until she left the Caged Devils, and found herself looking for refuge at Singer’s Auto and Body Shop; home to the stronger, larger, and most likely tougher biker gang in Lawrence, Kansas… The Family Business, the Winchesters’ and their usually loyal followers.
So what happens when Y/N finds herself falling for the younger and soon-to-be king Winchester faster then she can say, “son-of-a-bitch”?
Pairing: Biker!Sam x reader
Warnings: Cursing, smoking, mentions of eye-fucking, fighting, mentions of blood, flirty Sam (kinda), Dean flirting cause... It’s Dean.

“So.. You’re from Iowa and you just up and decided to come to Kansas, and just so happened to follow one of my sons back to a local biker gang..? Well, if I have never heard horseshit before that definitely took the cake.” John, whose name I learned earlier, laughed as everyone else joined in causing me to clench my jaw as I sat up straighter in my seat.
“John, this isn’t a joke.. What do I have to do?” I slightly spat as he glanced back towards me before taking a long drag from his cigarette.
“What can you do? Hm, I don’t know, what can she do boys?” He all but smirked as I narrowed my eyes, feeling my blood begin to boil as I stood up quickly, this shooting my chair backward as I slammed my hands down onto the large oak wood table.
“Listen up, you… Bastard. I have not driven over two hundred and six miles, just to have some asshole laugh in my face and brush past me. I can prove myself worthy to wear your tag. To wear your cut. I’m not some pussy who can’t stand up for herself.” I snapped as he started at me, the corner of his lips ticking upwards as he slammed the bud against the glass ashtray, making me slightly jump.
“Well, well, looks like heart-breaker here just grew some balls!” He laughed as he glanced around the room, his men smirking as I clenched my jaw and straightened my back as he stood from his own seat. Taking one of his hands and brushing his pepper styled beard as he moved closer.
“You want to prove yourself? Fine. Prove yourself. You’ve got a month until we get our next shipment, and our next buyers.. You can’t handle all the heat that the business gets, then you’re out. End of story, got it?” John hissed as I swallowed thickly, as I gave a simple nod.
“I can’t hear you.” He lowered his voice as he stooped closer, causing me to clench my jaw more as I sighed, wetting my lips gently as I cleared my throat.
“Got it..” I hissed as he nodded before turning back toward the others as I allowed my breathing to return to normal.
“Dean, go yell for Sam. Tell him we got a new prospect in town,” John grinned as Dean nodded, pushing up and away from the table as he made his way out of the room. His movements causing me to watch as he leaves, and allowing him to send me a wink.
Rolling my eyes, everyone filed out of the small office meeting area as I followed behind them, crossing my arms over my chest as I leaned against the wall of the bar as they all went their separate ways – some sitting at the bar for a drink, some going off to do what they needed to, some just sitting around smoking and laughing.
“Hey, HB, got a present for ya,” Dean’s voice carried from the other side of the bar making me look towards him as another man appeared behind him. Tall, way taller than Dean maybe 6’3? 6’4 at the most. Long, wavy brunet hair that stopped just under his ears, sideburns that showed proudly, glittering green-ish, blue-ish eyes and a small frown on his lips as I arched a brow towards him.
“Aw, how sweet and you don’t even know me yet.” I grinned as I moved towards them as Dean sent me a flirty kiss, making me roll my eyes once again. “What’s the present? Is it this handsome man?” I smirked towards Sam as his eyebrows shot up, looking a little taken aback as he hunched his shoulders slightly, his lightly scruffy cheeks getting pink.
“Hey, hey, this is my baby brother. Sammy meet Heartbreaker, or HB, and HB meet my brother, Sammy.”
“Sam, it’s just Sam.” The taller man, or Sam corrected Dean as he shot out his large hand, making me smile as I reached forward, taking it in my smaller one as I glanced up at him.
“Heartbreaker, HB, or Y/N.. Whichever you wanna say.” I smiled as I slowly licked my lips, our eyes seemed to stay locked as I bit my bottom lip, Sam looking my body up and down as he slowly pulled his hand away as I retracted my own.
“Alright, you two.. Sammy, looks like you’re moving up the food chain brother.” Dean grinned as he patted Sam’s shoulder, causing everyone to hoot and holler as I glanced around; reading the back of each cut with the large patches that read, “The Family Business,” and then at the bottom, “Kansas.” These boys had Kansas wrapped around their damn ring finger…
“What’re you talking about?” Sam laughed with a scoff as he began to shrug off his cut, Dean reaching over and yanking it out of his hand as he tossed it to me. The leather smacked against my chest as I wrapped my arms around it, glancing up as Sam’s lips made an ‘o’.
“Yep, little heartbreaker here is gonna become our new prospect.. And hopefully part of our family.” Dean grinned as Sam nodded, as he glanced down and I could easily tell.. He missed the warmth on his back the leather had given him.
“Hey, uh, Dean.. You guys have the same patch around here? I’ll just add it to my own cut if that’s cool?” I said as him and Sam went to walk away, only to stop as I stepped forward offering the cut back to his original owner.
“Uh, I think so.. Why and where do you have a cut?” Dean questioned while crossing his arms over his chest as I handed over Sam’s vest, him gladly accepting it as he shrugged it back on.
“Um.. My brother. He used to be in a gang and the day he checked out, I got the cut. I took all of his patches off of it, but I kept them for safe keeping… I didn’t want to go around lookin’ like some gang-hopper.” I sighed as Dean narrowed his eyes, only to nod slowly in understanding.
“Alright, well, go get the damn thing and I’ll make sure that Gareth puts some patches on for you..” Dean sighed before he wander off to go do his own thing as Sam and I stood there awkwardly.
“So.. You’re going to try and become part of this fucked up family..?” Sam laughed as I nodded, laughing myself as I cleared my throat.
“Yeah.. And trust me, this..” I glanced around seeing all of the members laughing, smiling, sharing a drink or a smoke, just being good buds. “This is far from fucked up, Samuel.”
“Y’know it’s just Sam..”
“Yeah, but where’s the fun in listening?” I grinned as he shook his head while stuffing his large hands into his jeans’ pockets while moving backward only to turn around as I followed him, us leaving the group and retreating outside.
“So, I know your name but nothing of you.. What’s your backstory?” Sam beamed down at me as I arched a brow, lightly kicking some loose gravel as we stopped just before the mechanic area.
“Well, really nothing to tell.. Lived in Iowa most of my life, came here, followed your brother here, and ta-da, I’m about to join one of the most dangerous biker gangs in all of Kansas.” I laughed with a scoff as he nodded, glancing up towards the garage as he sighed.
“Mm, well, trust me.. Your life is about to get a whole lot more interesting when you join us – if you join us.” Sam warned as I nodded, stepping out into the heat from the Kansas sun as I moved towards Bruiser.
“So, Samuel, what all do I need to know about being a.. Prospect?” I asked looking over my shoulder towards him as he stood there, a look of awe glued to him as I arched a brow and gently shook my head as I brushed a few strands of hair from my eyes as I sat back against the warm seat, grinning.
“He doesn’t like it when you just stare, pretty boy.” I laughed as Sam looked up, moving towards me as I leaned forward onto the handle bars of Bruiser as Sam came closer, looking closely at the engine.
“Damn.. He’s nice – also he?” Sam scoffed as I rolled my eyes, leaning back with my wrist tucked around the handle bar.
“Yes, he. Bruiser here is a family hand-me-down… And he’s kind of the only family I got left.” I sighed as I brushed a bit of dust from the shiny black finish as Sam nodded, brushing his fingertips over the gloss as they brushed against my own I moved my head to look up at him.
“So.. Being a Prospect?” I asked lowly as Sam stared down at me, his eyes slightly bugging as he brought his hand away from mine causing me to frown instantly.
“Right.. Well, basically you’ve just got to do whatever the boys ask – they need their bikes worked on, and if you can do it, then you do it. They need help with runs, you do it. They need help with meet-ups, you-“
“Do it. Yeah, I get it.” I laughed as he grinned his dimply boyish grin. I kicked up Bruisers’ stand as I held him up between my thighs as I grabbed my helmet, placing it on my head as I strapped it and looked up at Sam.
“Listen, uh, I’m probably going to be staying in town for a little while.. If you ever wanna get a few drinks, or something just holler at me.” I smirked as I started Bruisers’ engine, the purr beneath my figure making me smirk more as Sam took a step back, observing how he ran.
“Yeah, and keep your cell on you all times, alright..? My, uh.. My dad doesn’t like waiting around for anyone.” Sam sighed as I nodded, revving the engine carefully as I gave him a wave with my index and middle finger.
“I’ll be seeing you, pretty boy..” I smiled before pushing off the lot and taking off towards the road, the revving and purring of Bruiser already giving me a rush as I turned back onto the main street. The powerful roar from him taking me further and further away from what I hoped would soon be my future…
I watched as Y/N disappeared down the road, yet the smile on my face seemed to be permanent. Biting my lip gently as I thought back to the way she was able to hold up the motor beast between her legs.. Damn..
“Sammy!” I jumped at the sudden call. Spinning around to see Dean waving me over, I sighed and wiped a hand over my face as I tried to hide the fact that was practically eye fucking the new Prospect…
“What, Dean?” I groaned as I trudge over, avoiding being hit by Gareth or Clare when they rode their bikes by. He grabbed my forearm pulling me away from sight as he threw me a left hook into my shoulder.
“Owe! What the hell!?” I growled as I clutched my arm before dropping it and turning to Dean as he narrowed his eyes at me.
“First of all, that’s for eye fucking the new Prospect. And second, what the hell man?! I called dibs already!” Dean spat as he shoved me slightly, causing me to stumble back as I rolled my eyes, stepping forward and shoving back.
“You can’t call dibs on a person, Dean!” I growled as I clenched my jaw and my fists as he took a step forward, pressing his chest against mine as he growled back.
“Sure, I can! I just did, Sammy!”
Feeling my blood begin to boil, I lunged forward. Wrapping my arms around his waist as I knocked him back with the power of a line backer. Slamming Dean’s back into the metal side of a beat up car, few of my mechanics tried to grab onto us as we wrestled to the floor.
Dean’s fist flew to my jaw, as my own slammed against his collar bone – missing his throat completely. Shouting and running footsteps moved towards us as we rolled around, throwing slaps and punches when I was grabbed from my armpits and ripped from on top of him.
“Get off – I said, get off!” Dean shouted as he scrambled up, huffing as he took the back of his hand and slipped it under his nose, wiping away streaks of blood as my own chest heaved from anger that boiled inside my chest.
“The hell is going on here?!” Dad’s voice echoed through the shop as Bobby and Donna released my arms, as I threw them down and quickly left, going out towards my bike as Dad continued to shout after me; yet I just ignored it.
If neither of you can behave when that damned women is around, then I’ll get rid of her – permanently.” Dad spat as I sat there on my Harley, already regretting my decision as I shook my head and strapped on my helmet. Starting the engine up as I took off from the lot, and the opposite way that Y/N had went.
I just met the girl, I don’t need her to think I’m already obsessed… Even if I think I already am..
