some thoughts wrt the two established "romances" in severance so far (burt/irving and helly/mark) inspired by @figmentof who pointed out how irving had to find out mark and helly kissed from the corporate video in s2 e1 and how he must have felt seeing his co-workers' love affair like portrayed like that, and how it ties into the queer narrative at play here which uses workplace dynamics and policies as very clear analogues for real-life prejudice against queer couples. I mean, just look at this:

it's not just documented, but celebrated. used as propaganda for how the conditions on the severance floor have improved. proof that the severed workers are happy. and how even though he is unaware of the sociopolitical meaning of all this, lumon is very not-subtly telling him that what he had with burt is inherently lower and less valuable than this.

irving doesn't even know homophobia exists and yet he is still affected by it, it still seeps into every corner of the way his and burt's romance progresses. burt is positioned as an unacceptable love interest from the jump. irv is actively discouraged at every turn from pursuing it. their friendship is viewed with disgust and apprehension from their coworkers. burt working in a different department that's hated by MDR. dylan himself not being homophobic in the sense he opposes their relationship because they're both men but his attempts to keep them apart still has a parallel sort of prejudice behind it and still ultimately has the same effect as if it WERE driven by homophobia. irving is made to feel perverse for wanting contact with burt. he's told this is for his own good.

and then, just as they manage to overcome that immediate resistance from their peers and escape to a place where they can explore this blossoming romance on their own terms, burt retires. for all it matters to irv, he's dead. and then irving is given the option to live the rest of his life with grief that will never heal, or kill himself too, because there is no reality where they get to be together. that's just the way things are. of course they wouldn't get to be together. he was unreasonable and childish for ever hoping that could happen. this is just the way it goes for innies. he's told to get ahold of himself and not make a scene.

but the thing is, the standards are not the same for all. a heterosexual romance gets upheld as the shining example of success and fulfilment for the severed employees, whilst a homosexual romance is ridiculed and invalidated, and written off as something that was simply never meant to be. and even more importantly to irving, a heterosexual romance is APPROVED OF by lumon, and by extension, by kier. irv held back from allowing himself to even call his and burt's relationship a romance, because his god had told him it was wrong, he followed the handbook, thinking this was what kier wanted, and then finding out after suffering the worst heartbreak imaginable because of it, that this WASN'T EVEN TRUE. it's simply just that someone like HIM doesn't get to have something like this. his love is not the kind of love god wants. he does not approve of irv's love. cynical and manipulative though that approval may be (even within the context of the corporate video, the helly/mark romance is only being celebrated to further the narrative that lumon care for their workers, but the point still remains that it was THEIR romance specifically used to suit this end), when your entire life has been in pursuit of that approval, it must be devastating to learn it was never on the cards for you.

he and burt even used the fact kier met and fell in love with his wife in the same circumstances as them to justify this to each other - and they were RIGHT, god does approve of falling in love with your coworkers - this simply just doesn't apply to them specifically. and if irving needed any more proof that he no longer has a place at lumon, that he's better off not existing at all than existing with this pain that cannot be remedied, pain that won't even be acknowledged for what it is, a symptom of a sickness which plagues the entire severance system, pain that he is simply expected to choke down and get over - this is that proof.

and that's the POINT. they're TELLING us that this is unjust, and there's a double standard. they're using the ways the innies experience romance and the difference in lumon's reaction (lumon being the collective of all the management we've seen, lumon as a singular entity) to burt/irving vs helly/mark to comment on how queer people are not afforded the same level of respect or validation IN REAL LIFE, for their attachments, their love, their pain, their suffering. it is NOT just incidental that irving's romance is with a man. it would not WORK if his love interest was a woman. the POINT is that they are both men and how that puts them at a disadvantage, even if they aren't aware of the prejudices of the outside world, even if they don't TECHNICALLY apply on the severance floor, there are very clear analogues which still end up oppressing them in equivalent ways that they would be suffering if this were a normal workplace in the outside world.

it genuinely sickens me to my stomach that even in a world so divorced from reality and the sensibilities of regular society, a queer couple is still made to suffer and feel inferior in a way that perfectly mirrors their real-life counterparts. how they will never, EVER be allowed to exist in a world where their love could thrive freely and uninhibited - they never get to taste the joy our world has to offer people like them, but they are still somehow subjected to all the pain it has to offer them regardless. it's such horrifically devastating writing. it makes my skin crawl. I can't stop thinking about it

GUYS JUST FINISHED S2 E1 OF SEVERANCE AND IM GOING CRAZY

WARNING FOR HUUUUGE SPOILERS:

OKAY I NEED TO START SOMEWHERE—(keep in mind these are all theories)

Helly— Did anyone else think she was off? My theory is that it’s Helena Eagan who’s acting as Helly. The way she didn’t actually rip Milchick into pieces on SIGHT. She didn’t tell anyone about what she saw (which seems like something she would tell them because she’s an EAGAN FOR FUCKS SAKE) and also that she’s been reaaaaly weird abt Mark having a wife even thought there’s much more pressing issues at hand. It’s almost like she’s acting, and all she was told was her cover story, that she and Mark kissed, and that she hates outies.

Ms. Casey/Gemma— WHAT WHY WHERE. Where is she? Still don’t know. Why hasn’t Mark asked Milchick about it? He was insistent on the “Where is my team?” stuff, why wasn’t he on the Ms. Casey stuff too? Also, is she dead dead or did they do something brain-wise?

Irving— IF something’s up with Helly, I think he noticed and that’s why he only told Dylan about what he saw. Also why didn’t he leave? Why (maybe) can’t he leave?

Outies— Why haven’t we seen any of them yet? From the little bts thing, we saw outie Mark and Mark S. switching—almost like Petey. In that case, does that mean they’ve all been reintegrated and side effects haven’t shown up yet? I think if this is the case—or not— whatever’s happened to Ms. Casey, they might have done to MDR.

Devon— If outie Mark is back and alive and well, what is Devon doing about it? She knows that Ms. Casey is alive (not who she is as an innie, but just in general) and she would probably tell Mark as soon as he was back. Also Ms. Cobel? She knows about that now.

Ms. Cobel— Where is she? Was she killed? Is she working from the inside? Is she really gone from Lumon, or is she some sort of acolyte to the board? Why does her name still show up on Milchick’s computer? Does that mean Milchick isn’t really the one who runs this whole thing?

Mr. Milchick— Why does Ms. Cobel’s name on his computer bother him so much? Is he actually trying to reform the severed floor or is he just bluffing? What’s his deal with the family visitation room? Why did he let the MDR team see them again? Is he like a puppet, or is he genuinely trying to do something?

Miss Huang— Apparently Miss Huang is supposed to be Mark and Ms. Casey/Gemma’s kid according to some articles my dad read (but also want the crash like only 2 years ago?) WHY IS SHE SO CREEPYYY? Does she have something to do with the control of the severed floor? She seems to know more than she’s letting on. She also seems to not like Mr. Milchick, which is similar to how Ms. Cobel didn’t really like Milchick. I think she might be an extension of Ms. Cobel of sorts.

General outside— At least with Helena/Helly, news has got to have been broken. What is happening regarding severance outside? What happened after Irving got switched back and was banging at Burt’s door? What happens with that pro-severance guy and his wife?

- idk what this theory is about miss huang being related to gemma or ms casey because she seems like way more of an obvious foil/parallel to harmony. most likely she's a kid who is being raised by lumon and if we can judge by the rest of management she is not severed so maybe she's another product of a lumon orphanage. suuuper interested to see where they go with harmonys character this season as she starts to seriously question her faith in kier/lumon and i think miss huang will play a role in that or parallel that bc we are watching that dogmatism and combination of intense reverence to authority & equally intense force of personality be established in her. theres a sense of suppressed fear & resentment toward milchick that reminds me of harmonys relationship with the board/natalie in s1

- milchick remains king of the smize. NEED to know more abt him. also desperately want him and harmony to interact again

- the fact that lumon actually cares about the work caught me off guard bc i had been ignoring it due to the innies not knowing what it is and having basically no way of finding out. but like somebody mentioned that mark could be reformatting caseys chip and yeah that would make sense.... esp as the reason why they would need mark specifically to finish the project and can't just replace him. curious too about the other, 'spare' mdr workers and why the turnover happened as they apparently weren't working for lumon at the time they received their pineapple bribes. if mark is indeed reformatting her chip i just really wonder what everyone else is doing like do they all have a corresponding person like gemma? the worker besides mark we know the most about is petey but his loved ones all appear to have survived him. likewise were there additional circumstances around helena joining the severed workforce which apparently no eagan has ever done despite the obviously good optics of that? she could have just stayed unsevered and been ceo. can anyone be severed and if so why can at least some not be easily replaced? who is crucial and why, is it just mark because the situation with ms casey is some kind of high stakes leap-forward experiment?

- speaking of petey i do think it's possible we could see him again in some way, it does appear that the chip could contain extensive information about the brain, meaning he or part of him could potentially have been preserved in that form.

- also speaking of petey i anticipate the return of june and potentially her getting involved in serious anti lumon efforts which could add some complications for mark. but like sooner or later she's going to try to figure out what actually happened to her dad similarly to mark trying to investigate what actually happened to gemma

- is mark the only 'man on the inside' contacted by regabhi whose outie knows about reintegration and who is working against lumon? i kind of suspect burt could also be reintegrated or moving in that direction but like at least 1 other person must be or must have been. i also hope we get more info on why and how petey contacted her or if vice versa why she felt it was safe to reach out to him

- this show is a lot like dollhouse and as flawed as dollhouse is that does make me happy bc i do think it deserves a critical reexamination thats not about just pointing out every time joss whedon wrote something weird or revealing about himself. like yeah he did that. there's other stuff going on here though. i kind of think the chilly reception & cancelation of dollhouse might have contributed to his seemingly totally giving up on his artistic integrity around 2012 and personally i think as much as he sucks he had a point that the show deserved a different kind of attention than it was getting and really got shafted because it was genuinely ahead of its time in some ways

I just really wanted to make a short analysis on Helly’s character in severance cause gosh I just love her so much(tw attempted unalivement). To me it’s really interesting how she is introduced as the fish out of water, completely new at the company and it is just so painfully obvious that she doesnt fit in. But in my opinion where her character really shines are her apologies. As soon as she is introduced its clear shes a fighter, she doesnt take things lying down and if somebody tries to subjugate her they will rue the day they did. But when she finally gets to send a message to her outtie, she is greeted with this.

“ Eventually, we all have to accept reality. So, here it is. I am a person. You are not. “

While severance is never really subtle with it’s messaging, this is some of the most blatant hitting you over the head with the words CAPITALISM BAD. Especially when Helly’s outtie’s position is revealed, it’s clear, workers severed people are not treated as humans, are seen as unworthy of even making a decision. They simply exist to work, nothing else. Not very subtle but at the same time this scene is fucking terrifying and I love it. But even this doesnt break Helly. She isn’t anything if not a fighter, so fuck it, right? And so she tries something again. And fails. But this time Mark cant protect her anymore, and she is forced to face the punishment herself

“ Forgive me for the harm I have caused this world. None may atone for my actions but me and only in me shall their stain live on. I am thankful to have been caught, my fall cut short by those with wizened hands. All I can be is sorry, and that is all I am.“

I love the break room. It is such a barbaric concept, and the way it is framed is just beautifully terrifying. Repetition is well known as a brainwashing technique(which Lumen is absolutely abundant in), but it’s use in severance does not fail in making it any less terrifying. The apology Helly and others are forced to recite make it clear. We know what’s best, you don’t. Dont question us. In which the sentence  I am thankful to have been caught, my fall cut short by those with wizened hands, the most obvious in it’s messaging(which will be important later). At this point her character is in a standstill. Her character is defined by her strong force of will, and for a short time after this as a viewer it seems as if they finally broke it. She’s despondent and, while slowly, starts doing her work. And in a way, they have finally cornered her. But then you see, she’s grabbed an extension cord. And huh, why is she taking that trash can?

Hands down one of the most shocking and traumatic moments of the show. It is an extremely weird combo of ‘WHAT THE HELL WHY WOULD SHE DO THAT NONONO PLEASE STOP’ and ‘yeah she would totally do that but OUCH’. And even after this moment, she states that all that she wants is for that other version of her to suffer, and know that it was by her hands. So I mean yeah. In character but painful nonetheless. This is a major turning point in the series, not only for Helly but also for a lot of other characters. Helly comes to realise that she physically can not do this on her own, and eventually learns to trust the rest of MDR, including Mark. Which allows them to properly work together to accomplish something big. Getting to wake up as their outside selves. Getting to know who they are. Who are they really? Why would they go through severance?

The Helly scenes in the final episode are truly horrific. It was easy to write off Helly’s outie as just a bad misguided person after her tape, but the realisation that she did all of this, just as a pr stunt, as the next in line to recieve the Kier empire is just terrifying. Seeing the blank happy faces of MDR, knowing what you know, it feels gross. And the conversation with her father is just as bone-chilling. The barely contained hatred the father displays for innie helly while she is literally the same person is just a wonderful way to ramp up the tension.

I think in general this is a really good scene, but even just alone these few lines just highlight the utter disilusionment of the Kier family. And the next scene is probably my favourite scene in the whole show.

Many people point to her speech after this as Helly’s defining moment, but to me this scene perfectly exemplifies her character and the growth she goes through. This quiet moment of introspection and accountability is just fuckin rad to me. She could easily say that this was her outies actions, she had nothing to do with this. But no, she realises that somewhere inside her she is this person, and that person is deeply troubling and has hurt so many people. And so she solemnly repeats the phrases made to break her spirit and makes it her own. I also think it is super interesting how she dropped the third phrase from the apology, while also just not making sense in the context of this scene it also says so much in terms of the themes of severance. The people with power need to realise the power they have over others, and reckon with what they’ve done with it. And honestly look at themselves, there are no ‘wizened hands’ to hold you accountable, you need to do that yourself. And that really is just the beauty of Helly’s character and the show as a whole. And I haven’t even talked about the other characters, the weirdly poignant themes of religious disillusionment or the cult-like techniques Lumen uses to keep employees in line. Just ugh very good show. Please give me season 2 now please dude I need it.
