Galaxy Cove Vista Revisited - by Rogelio Bernal Andreo (Deep Sky Colors)
Explanation: To see a vista like this takes patience, hiking, and a camera. Patience was needed in searching out just the right place and waiting for just the right time. A short hike was needed to reach this rugged perch above a secluded cove in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park in California, USA. And a camera was needed for the long exposure required to bring out the faint light from stars and nebulae in the background Milky Way galaxy. Moonlight illuminated the hidden beach and inlet behind nearby trees in the above composite image taken last month. Usually obscured McWay Falls is visible just below the image center, while the Pacific Ocean is in view to its right. The above image is a high-resolution sequel to a similar image that appeared last year.

Big Sur Is Vastly Overrated
Tumblr media
Despite my belief that Big Sur is vastly overrated, McWay Cove and McWay Falls are two of the highlights of Big Sur, but they are not unique to the Pacific Coast.
There are other coves all along the North Coast and Southern Oregon Coast, although it is highest waterfall.
Located in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, McWay Cove and Waterfall on the Big Sur Coast of California. Much of the coastline and inland is charred and burned by many fires.
The cove is one of the few highlights for me along the denuded coast.
Far superior are the Southern Oregon Coast and North Coast (Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte coasts).
Big Sur is far, far, far overrated, in my personal opinion.
I think the reason it is overrated is because of the number of magazine writers, TV crews and A-listers who travel there from the L.A. and San Francisco metropolises.
Very few of these people and crews get up to, say, the Mendocino Coast and its quaint towns, or the Humboldt Coast and its natural and rugged beauty.
The same could be said for the picturesque and hidden beauties of the Del Norte County Coast and the Southern Oregon Coast.
All of these coastlines are immensely superior to Big Sur.

Night @ McWay Falls - by Jon Klein Wildlife and Nature Photography
This was shortly before dawn at McWay Falls on the Big Sur coast. After sleeping at a nearby highway pullout, I arose at midnight and walked to the viewing area north of Waterfall Cove, then waited a long cold time for the Milky Way to reach a good position over the waterfall. This image is a blend of several photos taken together, a very long exposure for the foreground and a series of shorter high ISO exposures for the stars.

McWay Falls is a beautiful standalone waterfall that drops 80m from deep in Big Sur off a cliff right down to the ocean. It is one of Big Sur’s many iconic stops along the Pacific Coast Highway. The falls drop down into the peaceful MCWay Cove, and although there is no access to the beach there are many photogenic views from along the top of the cove along the McWay Waterfall Trail.
