germany 2010: how one of ferrari’s biggest ‘fuck ups’ was actually kinda worth it

the german gp was the 11th race of that season - lewis was then leading the championship with 158 points and fernando was 5th with 98 (1 win + 2 podiums). massa (whom i’ll be calling felipe from now on here bc it’s kinda weird for me to call him massa ngl) was 8th with 67 points (0 wins + 2 podiums). their podiums were both p2/p3 so the only difference between them at that point was fernando’s win in bahrain.

felipe led most of the race, jenson led some of the laps too but the brazilian took back the lead until lap 48. i rewatched it a few months ago and he was locking up for some odd reason i don’t know, which was clearly not helping at all. still, he was leading it, but if we look at the drivers standings, he clearly did NOT have a shot at the championship and a fernando win was supposed to be much more welcome to ferrari.

the sad unfortunate coincidence here was that that race was held on the same day as the first anniversary of felipe's accident; basically pretty much everyone wanted him to win because it would mean more than his first win in a year and a half, it would also mean that he’s still got it even after having almost died.

but ferrari made the (right yet fucked up, imo) decision to have them switch their places. although i think the most fucked up thing here was actually forcing (felipe’s then engineer and also the loml) rob smedley to do that instead of having literally anyone else do it (errr, dunno, maybe stefano domenicali himself). 8 y/o me energy raging over this = still unmatched. i swore to god i would never support ferrari again BUT HEY i was born a clown.

...nevertheless, that was the birth of one of THE most iconic team radios aka felipe, fernando is faster than you. that’s simply poetic F1, it can’t get better than this. a team radio that cost ferrari a U$100.000 fine. why, one would ask... well, they had this stupid rule (after the 2002 season) that BANNED TEAM ORDERS. idk if any newer fans (or just anyone at all) are actually reading this but yeah, you heard it right. they unironically thought that banning team orders was gonna help this sport become more competitive. it still amazes me to this day, they thought no one was gonna come up with coded messages.

i could go on yelling about how the podium is yet THE BEST PART OF THIS RACE (because THE AKWARDNESS!!!!!!!!! the 2-min deafening silence! felipe looking like he could kill fernando in front of everyone!) but this post is already as long as it is. if some of y’all have never watched this race please do it and make sure to watch the press conference afterwards too. those were the 2 most awkward F1 moments i have ever seen during my entire life and i think nothing will top that.

welp, here’s the bbc coverage about it which features ferrari’s then team principal (stefano domenicali aka satan himself) who literally couldn’t give ANY fucks about it (istg this man still frightens me to this day. if i ever get rich RICH i’m not buying a Lamborghini - he’s the ceo) + the loml rob smedley (i’m a rob fan first human second) + schumi PREACHING THE TRUTH (that it’s the right thing to do for the championship, and it’s something that had been done several times before)

if you can’t watch the press con then this entire transcript will still give you a very good laugh. maybe i love it more than i should.

lovely. also completely worth watching felipe and fernando’s post race interviews (nando saying there were no team orders and he thought felipe had a gear problem <3).

but this is THE BEST video imo, you can cut the tension with a knife. vettel trying to run away because of how bad it was and fernando not letting him go. fernando answering shitty questions. felipe about to throw some hands in front of the journalists. a cultural reset.

IN CONCLUSION, why was it worth it? well, it was a huuuge controversy and unfortunately fernando didn’t end up winning the championship, but he still finished 2nd with a 4-point difference from vettel. thanks for coming to my ted talk.

Tbh you and me both! I surprised myself with this, too. When I tentatively got back into F1blr a couple of months ago after a lengthy absence (I probably stopped actively blogging/making content mid-2017?) I sort of figured I’d continue where I left off and focus mainly on Brocedes.

But it’s been years and things have changed. You can’t really picked up where you left off when a lot of the prominent fandom members/content creators/fic writers have moved on and left - be it to focus on a different motorsport category or go and do something else altogether. Yes, there’s a special sort of fondness for Brocedes but perspectives have changed, I think. A lot of new people have come into the fandom since 2016 (which is a good thing!) and they don’t remember Driver Nico, really, just Pundit Nico or Youtuber Nico or Entrepreneur Nico, and view him through that lens. There’s so many different interpretations of him now, and tbh I don’t really feel qualified to explore the “new” Nico - nor do I want to, really. My focus was always on Racer Nico and all the ways in which he tangled with Lewis, on and off the track. And I’m not sure there’s much room left to explore that anymore without it feeling... I guess exhausted or stale.

Of course I still like the fics I’ve published over the years, I’m still proud of them - although looking back there are things I’d do differently, but I think that’s normal - and I have no intention of, like, orphaning them or deleting them or anything like that. I’m always really happy and really grateful whenever someone messages me and tells me - “Oh, you’re that person? I remember reading your fics, I loved them.” That genuinely means a lot to me and although my contribution was fairly small and humble I’m glad someone’s out there enjoying it.

Which brings me to Sebchal. Honestly, I’m not even sure how I first stumbled upon Sebchal content on Tumblr, but my initial thoughts weren’t, admittedly, super shippy. But I liked ‘em. That was my gut reaction, without knowing much else - I like this. Especially after the Seb/Kimi Ferrari lineup which was honestly kind of meh for me...this intrigued me. So I started digging, I started researching it, and slowly pieced the 2019 season together in my head. And boy, did it get spicy. Then I ended up meeting a lot of really wonderful people who enabled me further and suddenly I thought, “Yes, I’m really on board with this?” It wasn’t a conscious decision that I made or anything - “I’m going to start shipping this thing now” - it’s more that it really appealed to me? So it just happened naturally and hey, we are where we are now, I guess. lol. I have so many ideas for them - be it a new gifset, or a fic, or whatever - floating around in my head at any given time it’s honestly...just so exciting? I haven’t felt this inspired in a long, long time and tbh was starting to feel like I would never feel that way again (especially given the year we’ve had.) And this got me out of that creative slump and I’m just... happy now, where I am? I like thinking about them, I like making content for them. Even if it’s just a tiny, niche fandom with like a handful of shippers. It’s not about the numbers, it’s about the passion, the intensity, the dedication. And we’re a dedicated bunch. lol

I wouldn’t even call myself a Seb stan, really. It’s just that - as I’ve explained to someone else - I never really paid much attention to him before. He was just...there. Floating, somewhere in the background. Between 2014-2017 I was solely focused on Nico and Nico/Lewis and everything else didn’t really matter as much - the hamsters that power my brain would get overwhelmed if I tried to have my fingers in many pies at the same time, lmao. But now I’ve gained a sort of appreciation for him, I suppose. I can see the appeal - I like him. I’m not a Seb stan by any means but this - a Ferrari lineup with Sebastian and Charles - just feels so right to me. Like I’ve finally found a place for him in my mind - he’s not “in between” Brocedes anymore, he’s busy being tangled up in his own intricate web of affairs with his new teammate. And I think that’s beautiful. ;’) Who knows what will happen after he goes to Aston Martin. I’m just trying to live in the moment and appreciate whatever time we have left with them and hopefully, hopefully keep them alive a little bit longer.

4) Seb calling out Ferrari the second he came back from quarantine, iconic and hilarious !

3) the 24 hours of Le Mans virtual, such a cool moment for me because it was my first time following that ‘race’ entirely, I stayed awake almost all of it, eating sausage and ice cream in my couch opened in bed with my massive teddy bear while screaming with the friends, it was so cool ! (AND FISICO WAS THERE OKAY)

2) THE BEST PODIUM IN THE WORLD CHECO ESTE LANCE 🥰 All my faves in one place

1) Honestly ? Meeting all the gc and the friends I made in 2020, I never thought I could find such a place in a fandom and even less finding such amazing friends (and yes that counts the former members of the group ;) ), the rest of the year can be erased, you can even take the perfect podium away from me as long as I can keep you all 💙

The 2016 season was honestly pretty dull because most of the races weren’t super memorable and nico rosberg isn’t the most exciting or compelling driver imo

Vettel and Alonso would be there for sure....there’s so many contenders for that third spot! Maybe George Russell, the guy is definitely owed one

you are most welcome!! 💕 OKAY SO....buckle up, this is the tea. so back in season 2, it was clear by now that Renault was the superior car and Lucas would constantly make trash talk about this fact, he would go on and on about how he didn't stand a chance of winning the championship as Seb had the superior car. They’d been trading blows all season and it came down to the finale in London. Seb was on pole, whilst Lucas was in third and said he would do whatever it took to win....well, at the opening lap, Lucas yeeted his car into Seb's and took them both out. It would work in his favour as they were level on points and Lucas would win on countback by virtue of podiums. So they both went for the fastest lap in their second cars- which was worth two points - Seb claimed fastest lap and therefore won the championship. Lucas would then win the title the next year after Seb yeeted himself out on Montreal, as well as missing a race because of WEC duties, but that was the beef, they were the big rivalry for the first three years 😌
