There are rules to this sort of thing. Not the common sort, made to be broken and bent and outright ignored, but the old kind, made for dealing with dangerous things.

And they are all dangerous things, in Overwatch.

McCree survives by knowing which rules to break and which to obey and when to do the opposite of what he usually does. Dangerous things stay dangerous because they can change - he knows this all too well.

Hanzo has heard so many stories about the the man, the myth - nay, the legend - whose post he took at Hogwarts, yet not in a single one of them did anyone say anything about how attractive the Deadeye Cowboy is. But even if the man's daughter didn't hate him for no apparent reason, Hanzo can't afford to fall for someone who would kill him on the spot if he ever found out Hanzo's true nature. So of course, he falls head over heels.

Something weird is going on in the desert south of Santa Fe and their lives unexpectedly come together in the middle of it.

Fortune-telling was just supposed to be a way to make some money for Genji's business. It was easy enough with the dragons whispering secrets in his ears, and the outfit certainly helped bring in customers. But it was a skeptic named Jesse McCree who turned everything on it's head.

Jesse closes his eyes and he is not at home anymore.

He is not alone.

Jesse is in a large, open room with a high ceiling full of exposed wooden beams and what looks like straw mats spread out on the floor.  Some of the walls are solid, others are made of paper.  Words come to Jesse to unbidden like memories that aren’t his own.  Dojo.  Tatami.  Shoji.  The characters on the pillars are kanji.    

Jesse is in Japan.  Parts of him, anyway.

There are people lingering along the edges of the room.  There are two figures in the center, one of them older with his eyes flashing eerie red, black hair greying at his temples.  In front of him is a boy about Jesse’s age— seventeen.  Eighteen, maybe.  He’s kneeling with his eyes downcast, long hair pulled up into a messy bun, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.  His clothes are hanging down off his left shoulder to expose an intricate tattoo, dragons and storm clouds and lightning in blue and grey and gold.  

He’s beautiful like nothing Jesse has ever seen, a tangle of contradictions.  He looks delicate.

He looks powerful.

He’s breathtaking and he’s afraid and oh, fuck.

He’s Jesse’s.

The table seems endless stretched between them; polished wood, incense filling the room with smoke, ceremonial cups of sake. Jesse stares across the length of it, his gaze locked on Hanzo with an intensity usually reserved for the hunt, except he’s never been interested in any prey the way he is now; voraciously.

Savagely.

Teeth curve long out of his jaw, and his body rolls into the half-shift all on its own. Ears pricked, tail sprouting from the base of his spine, eyes lit up red. Hanzo is doing no better.

His eyes are black, pupils blown wide, nothing but a thin ring of gold set in an impossibly dark sclera. Jesse watches Hanzo’s horns lengthen, watches his claws extend. Watches his cheeks turn red, even more pronounced against the blue of his skin.

Everything goes sideways, as Jesse always expected it would.

It just doesn’t go sideways the way he expected.

Jesse had been ready for a fight.

Cassidy takes a new monster hunting contract. It's pretty decent as contracts go: the pay is good, the perks even better, and he's got two competent companions to fight at his side when the monsters come.

Then a third companion arrives and ruins everything.

Hanzo gets the uncanny feeling that he’s being towered over and instinctually tips his head up, even if he sees nothing.

“You can’t see me,” a deep honeyed voice rumbles from above, a good few feet above, Hanzo guesses.

“I—“

Hanzo’s reply is drowned out when the hunting party crashes through the foliage behind him and the screaming begins.

Welcome to the second McHanzo Reverse Bang! Sign ups start on October 5th, until then just share this post and spread the word!

These dates are subject to minor changes during the course of the event. All changes will be announced ahead of time.

 Guidelines and important info to know before you sign up

Every participant should follow the central event blog or join the Discord, and be aware of the schedule so that everything can be done on time (reminders will be posted before each major part of the event, but please don’t make the mods have to message you personally because you forgot to send things in)

All check ins and submissions are going to be done through emails, however only the admin and one mod will have access to the event email and your email address will not be visible to anyone else

Emails are gathered in the sign up form only so that you can get a copy of your form and your confirmation email from us 

The art you submit for claims should be a rough sketch, so the claims are as anonymous as possible; writers should pick the art based on the idea and not who the artist is

If you’re not comfortable posting a longer story on one day, this event may not be for you

If you’re not comfortable sharing your wip with your partner, this event may not be for you

FAQ (below the cut)

What is a Reverse Bang? A Reverse Bang is kind of the opposite of a Big Bang; an event that spans over a couple of months, where artists come up with idea concepts and draw art, and writers write stories based on that art.

How do I participate? To participate, you just have to sign up. Artists can immediately start working out their ideas and sketching stuff.

What do I have to create? Artists have to create at least 1 finished piece of art that includes Hanzo, McCree, or McHanzo, and 1 small banner for the project as a whole with the story title and both partner names.

Writers have to write a story based on the art that is at least 8 000 words long.

Can I sign up as a writer and an artist? Definitely, if you think you can manage it! Just keep in mind that this may be a lot of work for you. 

Can I sign up if I already have a partner? Of course! You both need to fill out the sign up form and fill out the necessary info (there is a category for this as well). You won’t go through the claims process unless you want to do more than one project, but everything else is the same.

Where and when do I post? For this event, artists will have to post on Tumblr (and you can post on any other site as well, but the Tumblr post is mandatory). The reason for this is that you will be creating the archive posts yourself so I don’t have to repost the art on the blog. Posting will be explained in detail a bit later on.

Each writer and artist pair will get a specific day during the posting period on which you post your works in full. This means the story has to be fully posted on the assigned day.

What happens if I have to drop out? That’s okay, it happens and it’s not a problem, just make sure to email or message us to let us know as soon as possible. Please understand that dropping out after claims means you’re leaving your partner alone and we need time to find them someone else to work with, so letting the mods know as soon as possible is important. We don’t need to know why you’re leaving, just that you are!

Can I post teasers of my work? Unfortunately, you’re not allowed to post snippets or teasers because all entries have to be completely new and never posted. You should share your work with your partner and the mods for check ins if asked to do so, but other than that it should remain unposted until March. Sharing with the other participants in the Discord server is okay after claims go through.

Can other ships be included in the project? You’re more than welcome to add other ships and characters to your work, as long as the story is focused on McCree, Hanzo, or their relationship, whatever kind it may be. The type of their relationship, romantic or platonic, is completely up to you. However, please refrain from incestuous relationships or ships where one person is underage.

What do claims look like? Claims for the Reverse Bang will work the same as for the Big Bang: artists will submit sketches of their work with a short description of what the finished piece will look like. Writers will then get access to the art file and they will have a day to look through all entries, before picking their top 5 and submitting them in the claims file. The claims will be on a first come, first serve basis.

What’s different this time? Unlike the previous run of the Reverse Bang, artists will not include any prompts or ideas this time around for claims. You will be asked to submit just a sketch of the art, and all claims will be based on that. Once you’re partnered up, the way you brainstorm and figure out ideas for the story is solely between you and your writer, but it goes without saying that artists should approve of the story idea before the story is written (unless agreed upon otherwise between the artist and writer).

I'm so excited to finally post this! Here is my entry for the @mcbigbang McHanzo Reverse Bang 2018! My partner @aluxra wrote a fantastic, and fun romp, and was a saint for putting up with my constant art flip-flopping the whole time! I had a lovely time collaborating, and a fun time painting this piece. 

The art is based vaguely around “The Wheel of Fortune” tarot card- with maybe a hint of what’s in store. ;3c

I'm kinda confused, I wanna participate, but I'm afraid there there just isnt enough info for me? Like is there art prompts artists need to follow? Do artist draw what ever they want with Hanzo and McCree? Are Writers working with artists to make one big piece together? When I see the FAQ they dont answer anything I'm looking for.

Hi! Thanks for your questions. I’ll copy the existing answers from the FAQ because some of these are already answered. 

What is a Reverse Bang? A Reverse Bang is kind of the opposite of a Big Bang; an event that spans over a couple of months, where artists come up with idea concepts and draw art, and writers write stories based on that art.

That’s a yes on artists and writers working together in pairs to create a big project. How this happens is explained in the question about art claims, and more detailed info on that will be posted once it’s relevant before claims start.

What do I have to create? Artists have to create at least 1 finished piece of art that includes Hanzo, McCree, or McHanzo, and 1 small banner for the project as a whole with the story title and both partner names.

There’s no mention of prompts in the FAQ because there aren’t any, since this isn’t a pairing week or prompt based event. On our side, we just need you to fill out the above requirements to qualify for the event and be featured in our archive. Everything else is up to you, just be mindful of the fact art claims are fully SFW due to this event being open to everyone above 16. The only theme is McHanzo, since the event is focused on them.

The previous run of the Reverse Bang was hosted on this blog, as well as the two runs of the Big Bang we reference in our FAQ so please feel free to browse through our archives to get a feeling for what this kind of event is about and what the end results are.

I keep hearing ppl refer to r76 and mchanzo w/ terms like "big bang" and "reverse big bang" what does that shit mean

ive never done either of these things myself so i had to look it up to be sure, but a “big bang” is a fandom event where people write fics and then artists sign on to create fanart for them and its all compiled into a zine or something

a reverse big bang is where the artists go first, and writers create fic based on the art theyre assigned. at least i think thats what they are

@saltytothecore tagged me, and as they predicted, I am indeed willing to procrastinate by filling it out. :P

What are the themes of your current WIP(s)? Why does your current WIP(s) matter and whose voice is it explained in?

Throwing Stones at the Stars: Idk about overriding themes, but it’s definitely me riffing off other young McHanzo fics and going “okay, but what about the consequences to the canon timeline and all the stuff going on there?” There’s also some fun “how do you deal with shitty stuff when neither of you was entirely right or entirely wrong but it was inarguably kind of shitty?” questions going on in it, as well as just a big ol’ catchall space for lots of head canons, big and small, and some vague ideas about how sometimes “what really happened” isn’t an objective fact but a matter of perspective. ANYWAY, it’s from Hanzo’s POV/voice, and that mostly matters because he’s not an entirely reliable narrator, which can be either amusing, kind of sad, or nice distance from the sad bits because he’s not super great at this whole feelings business.

That silly armadillo fic: pretty straightforward, honestly. I turned McCree into an armadillo because hand-wavey magic reasons and because I’m easily talked into anything that sounds hilarious, and it exists entirely to be silly and charming. Told from Hanzo’s POV again, because as funny as it would be to write from the POV of the guy who’s an armadillo, I just don’t think it would be quite as entertaining as the POV of the guy who doesn’t know his armadillo friend is a real person when the reader definitely knows. Also it’s a riff off Frog Prince style fairy tales, so we all probably know what has to happen to make the armadillo become not an armadillo, right? (Good thing McCree doesn’t have leprosy.)

Reverse Bang fic: can’t reveal too much because it’s not my turn to post yet, but I can say I’ve loved writing it, I personally think it’s pretty funny and deliberately kinda cheesy in places but with a big dose of Feelings, and it’s from Jesse’s POV.

Other stuff is just sort of sitting around waiting to be worked on, and I keep telling myself I’m not working on them but I may or may not have snippets and drafts posted in various places that I sort of poke at roughly once a week, and one of those is probably a weirdly pornographic sequel to a fic that I keep saying I’m done with but I’m not. 

Anyway, I will tag @mataglap because I bet they’d love to talk about their writing some more.
