Overwatch plain read podfics

I've been thinking of making podfics for overwatch Fanfictions I like and was gonna post a sample of my reading style Is that something y'all would enjoy and be interested in? I realize I basically listen to 90% of all fics I enjoy via the type and speak android app but most find it difficult or jarring to listen to fic with automated voices (gasp omnic racists lol jk) So I'd like to read some fic for y'alls. I prefer McHanzo and Reaper76 stories and even Genyatta, but anything else is welcome so long as it's short. I'll take suggestions then take a vote for what people want to hear first and which of my voice styles works best for it. For now I'm looking at the overwatch fics by Asheryder on ao3

Most Popular Multi-Chapter Story: Hm, depends a bit on definition -- either Mer’s Moving City if we’re being totally scrupulous, or the Scoundrels and Thieves ‘verse, which is posted in parts rather than chapters but works essentially the same way. 

Favorite Story You Wrote: Mer’s Moving City (SGA) is probably objectively still the best (and longest; I think it accounts for like a third of my entire word count) thing I’ve done, it’s got Themes and a Plot and shit! Trust me I’m as surprised as you are. The fact that I eventually finished it despite. everything going on at the time is one of my biggest personal achievements.  

As for personal favorites: I have a weak spot for Have you tried baking, I hope that I don’t fall in love with you, Like that guy in the Odyssey and The way of history (all Overwatch) and also Lay your ghosts down (Dragon Age). As you can see it’s mostly the ones that made me laugh a lot while writing them haha. SPECIAL SHOUTOUT to And we are kind to snails (The Mandalorian) because @blackestglass made SUCH A WONDERFUL PODFIC of it and I’m still over the moon about it, please go check it out

Story You Were Nervous to Post: Oh a bunch of them haha I always have a small neurosis before I post anything it’s practically part of the process. I guess it was worst with Clockworks and Beautiful Things (which is about Ladon Radim, a SGA character liTERALLY no one but me cares about and I hesitated to even post it but then I was like Treat Yo Self and did anyway) and The way of history

How You Choose Your Titles: By having a nervous breakdown so pitiful that divine inspiration is forced to intervene, is that not how it goes for everyone (Honestly it’s the worst sometimes I just pick a one-word title in desperation. Scoundrels and Thieves titles are full of Tom Waits references though!)

Incomplete: Approximately a million WIPs in my googledocs. And Scoundrels and Thieves; there are at the very least two more uh story-crucial I guess? stories in that left to go! 

Do You Outline? I do for longer/trickier ones! Though it’s a pretty loose process; I usually know how a story ends from the moment I begin writing and jump around A Lot, so I’m just figuring out the middle bits and finding the structure/binding it all together. Scoundrels and Thieves has very graciously let me not think about it too much the last few years because of the non-chronological vignette structure.

Who Bottoms More? Now With Charts

What This Is

A non-comprehensive “first look” at who bottoms more often in completed, explicit McHanzo fics on AO3 as of November 2018.

A possible resource for the next time the inevitable discourse rears its head, so we can rely on some shared starting point.

An exercise in extraordinary nerddom. 

What This Isn’t

A more qualitative look at how top/bottom dynamics are written.

A judgment on people who have a preference for reading or writing one thing over another.

An excuse to be a dick to anybody.

At First Glance: Some Charts!

I feel like this one’s kinda obvious? Of all the completed, explicit fics I looked at that also featured some kind of penetration, 56.3% had Hanzo bottoming.

This one’s weirder. I had a hunch while coding that there would be more variety over time. And there is, but not to the degree my hunch told me there would be. I’m a dork who forgot to label this, so the blue squiggle is percentage “Bottom Hanzo” fics, and the red is percentage “Bottom McCree” fics (out of all fics featuring some kind of penetration). 

Breakdown by year: 2016: ~65% Bottom Hanzo; 2017: 51% Bottom Hanzo; 2018: 55% Bottom Hanzo. (It’s also worth noting that the first explicit McHanzo fic appeared in May of 2016, and 2018 is not yet finished, so this may skew the numbers a bit compared to 2017′s full year results.)

Data transparency, method, analysis & rambling under the cut.

Data Transparency

Here’s the deal, friends: all this data is publicly available on AO3 already. But I did the scraping and put it all into a file and coded it, which makes it easier for other people to take it up to examine it, or to challenge me, and that’s great. But I also have some very real ethical concerns (and personal triggers, heh) surrounding “callout culture” and online harassment and so on, and I don’t care to make that easier for anybody. So! If you’re interested in looking at the data yourself, I am happy to share it, but you gotta request it from me in a personal message, off anon. This is an imperfect solution, but I’m trying to balance transparency and accountability here. At least this way if anybody does start getting harassed over this specifically, there’s a trail of names/pseudonyms that leads back to me and hopefully keeps us all accountable to each other.

A warning here though: I skimmed through a lot of things that were incredibly far beyond my comfort zone and that I’m sure would outright trigger many, many people. So you are welcome to do the same thing I did, but you should be aware of what it is you’d be getting into before you start.

Methods

Sample is all completed, explicit-rated McHanzo fics on AO3. I excluded Mature fics just to narrow this stuff down (although I strongly suspect similar trends would continue). I excluded unfinished works because a) many people rate in anticipation of sex scenes they haven’t yet published, and b) I can’t read authors’ minds to know if they’re going to publish a future sex scene that may be different than the one already in the fic. I didn’t code translations or podfics, because those would be repeats and skew things. I also didn’t code non-English-language fics, because I am just not that good. Also, I’m a real human being, so there are almost certainly some errors, but I once again sincerely doubt they’d significantly affect the overall shape of the data. (If you wanna check my work, hit me up for that sweet sweet CSV file.)

Sample size ended up being 844, and this is a very lazy, basic content analysis that just asked “is somebody getting penetrated, and who?” Codes were Bottom Hanzo [in which the described sex acts feature exclusively Hanzo as bottom], Bottom McCree [same, but for McCree], Vers [described sex acts in the same fic feature both parties being penetrated, whether in the same scene or separate scenes], and Non [catchall for everything from non-penetrative sex, blowjobs, and “there wasn’t actually any sex between McHanzo because it was between some other pairing and McHanzo was secretly only a side pairing”, etc.]

If authors tagged their own fic with who tops or bottoms, I took them at their word. It was expedient. Those are in a pretty small minority, though.

How the fuck does one operationalize bottoming? Great question, I’m glad I asked myself. Here’s the thing: people do write and have written whole essays and analyses and so on about what this means, because people use it differently IRL. Some people are talking about specific sex acts, some people are talking about a general “approach” to sex, some are talking about both of these things and also maybe a part of their actual identity or presentation of self, and so on. So the best I can do is be transparent about the definition I used, while recognizing that it is limited and does not accurately reflect everyone’s actual sexual practices. I made an educated guess based on what fandom usually talks about when they’re talking about tops and bottoms, and I defined it as “being penetrated [in the anus, vagina, or Other (bless you, monsterfuckers)] by dick, fingers, object or tongue.” I don’t expect everyone to agree with this definition. I'm not fully on board with this definition. But it was one that was useful, because usually the discourse is about penetration and the attendant social baggage.

Here’s your percentage breakdown, now that you know how I measured everything:

Bottom Hanzo: 350 total / 42.84% all / 56.27% all penetration

Bottom McCree: 216 total / 26.44% all / 34.73% all penetration

Vers: 56 total / 6.85% all / 9% all penetration

Non: 195 total / 23.10%

Analysis & Rambling

Obviously Hanzo bottoms more, like. Unquestionably. Where I think errors are most likely is that some of the “exclusively” bottoms might actually be Vers fics and I just missed it. On the other hand, some of those Vers fics uh. kind of nodded at the idea but only barely included it. (I’ll pick on myself here, since I don’t wanna pick on anybody else: there’s a throwaway line in “Just Deserts” that very briefly describes a past sex act where McCree bottomed, but the scene described in-depth is still bottom Hanzo. A sex act is described, but a throwaway line is not remotely the same thing as an entire PWP written around the other scene. This is what I mean by “nodding at it”.)

The “Non” category was also occasionally difficult. There are plenty of non-penetrative sex acts that in every other way mimic exactly the same dynamics as if there were penetration. So like, there’s a bottom. And it’s usually Hanzo. But since I restricted myself to looking only at fics with some kinda penetration, these still got counted as “Non”s. So while errors are very likely, some of those errors are about how I operationalized, and I remain pretty confident the trends wouldn’t be significantly different. 

What I didn’t look at in any depth is how penetration is written about. Honestly, I think that’s the more interesting question, but it’s also one that would take way, way, way longer and be a lot squishier and more interpretive and require me to enter the kind of discourse I find very exhausting very quickly. But I will say that I found plenty of well-written, respectful, nuanced takes on this stuff. I also found some blatantly kinky stuff that takes up the question of “who has power right now?” very explicitly and plays with it outright. And I found plenty of stuff that had really, uhhh, unhealthy or uncomfortable ideas embedded into those portrayals regardless of which character was being penetrated, which is usually the kinda stuff that we’re talking about when the top/bottom discourse emerges.

What’s even the point of this?

Hopefully? To enable some kind of productive conversations so that people who do want to engage in this discourse don’t have to perpetually assert the basic reality that there is more bottom Hanzo than not. There’s so much more to that conversation, but at least starting with a basic agreement that yes, this is a true statement, can be useful. 

That said, discourse on Tumblr is difficult, because my biggest beef with like 90% of it is the very bold assertions of a problem and, often, very bold claims to Only One Way To Fix the Problematic Thing, and/or strict moralizing that punishes missteps without acknowledging the possibility for growth. But critiquing each other and the content we produce is more complicated than Only One Way can encompass. You’ve got sexual identity things going on, gender things going on, race things going on, class things going on, etc., and all of this reading and writing is happening within a community in which women and trans and NB people and not-straight people are disproportionately represented compared to the outside world. And all of those categories of people already live in a world where their sexual desires and fantasies are excessively scrutinized by people looking to control those desires and the bodies they inhabit. I think any critique of the way we write about or consume romantic and erotic stories has to try to consider that hyperscrutiny as much as it considers the problematic elements that might be embedded in the content itself.

And when I say “problematic”, I mean it in the boring-ass academic sense: it should be problematized, not taken for granted or left unexamined. It’s not a reason to beat anybody else up, or to beat yourself up. It’s just a conversation to keep having so we can make informed decisions about the kind of content we wanna create. So I simultaneously hope this helps move conversations forward respectfully and productively and hope that we resist the urge to “Only One Way” ourselves into other traps. If there’s any possible singular solution that I would prescribe, it would be only “do your best to create thoughtful and varied depictions”.

McHanzo Digest is a rec community run by members of the McHanzo fandom! We know it’s easy to get overwhelmed and miss a few things, especially on Tumblr, so our mission is to bring you brand spanking new McHanzo recs from Tumblr, AO3, and beyond!

Although we aim to bring you the Good Stuff, this blog’s moderators are limited on time and mental energy. While we can assure we’ll do our best, this is hardly a comprehensive newsletter style blog. It’s merely a few people trying to show you cool new things! While we’re aware of the possibility for rec blogs to foster resentment from people who are not recced, our intention is not to make people feel bad, but to showcase things we loved so others might also see and love them!
