okay of all the possible conclusions i was expecting from the fear engine saga i was not expecting That. the connections to the spooky monster quests from the board in the inn? not that shocking, there was some foreshadowing in those quests.
kass getting turned into the *hide-behind*?! *that* i did not expect, yikes
puts an entire new perspective on that quest, honestly

Cryptober Day 23: Teakettler.
Tumblr media
The Teakettler, or as it is also called the "Wild Teakettle," is a creature from North American lumberjack folklore, originating mainly in Minnesota and Wisconsin. It is described as a small animal that gets its name from the noise it made, resembling that of a boiling teakettle as clouds of vapor issued from its nostrils. It also walked backwards by choice.
As the myth goes, only a few lumberjacks claim to have seen one as the creature is so shy. But if a boiling kettle is heard and nowhere to be found, that means that a Teakettler is nearby.
An account about the creature is given by Jorge Luis Borges under "Fauna of the United States" in the Book of Imaginary Beings (1957), a book that contains 120 mythical beasts of folklore and literature. The description is identical to Charles E. Browns' in Paul Bunyan's Natural History (1935). The "Silver-tailed Teakettler" was also featured among other fearsome critters in 1972's McBrooms Zoo, where various artistic depictions followed.
The description given on Wikipedia incorrectly quotes Jorge Luis Borges, saying that "it is said to resemble a small stubby-legged dog with the ears of a cat." However, folklorists have pointed out that in prior written literature the creature was never described as such. The inaccuracy has lead several modern artists to interpret it as a corgi or other small dog, however you may find a handful of different interpretations straying away from the canine-like description.
Tbh I almost didn't add this one to my list because it just seemed way too cute, and completely out of place in the otherwise spooky atmosphere of Cryptober. But like,,,this lil guy is just so goofy I couldn't resist. It poses 0 threat, it's literally just a doggo that makes funny noises and walks backwards. I think we'd all love to have one.

After researching for a bit about some lesser-known mythological beasties, I realized that there were two books from when I was a kid that I absolutely loved and would fit perfectly with your works. I've yet to find anything on the second, but one was McBroom's Zoo - where an old farmer makes a homemade zoo with all the obscure American legendary critters, like sidehill gougers. I think you'd like it, from what I remember!
I’ll add it on my books to hunt for list, thank you!

Today's reflexion
When I was a kid I had a book, "McBroom's zoo" which was about a family who wanted to create a zoo made of supernatural species. There was an animal who was like a little ninja, who was always hiding in the back of people: the Great Seventeen-Toed Hairy Prairie Hidebehind. Now I realize that in way, I've been a Hidebehind for a long time, hidden either behind others or a fake version of me, maybe because I was so scared of people not loving me. But now it doesn't matter anymore, because I don't want people to love me, I want the right ones to love me. And first person who needs to love me is myself. I'm no longer a Hidebehind.

It's fair to say we're fans of Graham Marshall here in the kennel, not only due to his infectious glass-gargling voice but also due to the tenacity of the man in what is for many a long and difficult path to achieve anything close to recognition, never mind fame and fortune.  His struggle has been long and it has been hard, however it has led to him releasing Mr Complicated, an album of meaningful songs that captivate and engage the listener, encouraging them to become part of his musical journey as every word in every track gives an insight to his past, present and future in this beguiling, introspective and retrospective gem. Mr Complicated by Graham Marshall This is not just an album created by Graham Marshall, this album is his life set to music with contributions from Fernando Perdomo, Durga McBroom, The Rosannah Sisters, Jensen Forshaw & Linda Perhacs, this album follows no trends, instead it offers an eclectic mix signifying his non-conforming attitude towards music. From love, loss, survival & humour, this album offers a welcome diversion from the usual Singer/Songwriter trend.  Graham Marshall has featured directly in Ralph's life too as back in 2013 he donated his single Freedom Call to become part of the Ralph's Life CD of 40 tracks to raise awareness and funds for the Rethink Mental Illness charity. Last year he travelled down from his home in Sunderland at his own expense to St Helens to take part in the Ralph's Life charity event for Musicians Against Homelessness and played a storming set in Zoo Bar. The album is available now to download on itunes and Bandcamp and I'd highly recommend it for any serious music lover's collection. Needless to say Ralph will be giving a track from Mr Complicated a spin soon on the Radio KC Indie Show so make sure you tune in every Sunday from 5-7pm GMT on rkc.noip.me. and hopefully we'll see Graham Marshall hitting the road soon and not just in his 40' ASDA delivery truck.

the hidebehind is a creature from american folklore that stalks and eats people who wander in the woods, and is so named because when someone attempts to look directly at it it will either hide behind an object or it will hide behind the person trying to look at it.
feel free to share where you first heard about the hidebehind in the tags; i first heard about it from the children's book "mcbroom's zoo" which had a much more kid-friendly version of it. i more recently saw it in beloved rpg dragonfable, which inspired this poll.
