☠️🎄🖤 NEW RELEASE 🖤🎄☠️ 🎁 Twelve Bikers for Christmas 🎁 Authors: Addy Archer & Esther E. Schmidt, Addison Jane, Avelyn Paige, Betty Shreffler, Daphne Loveling, Geri Glenn, Kathleen Kelly, KE Osborn, MariaLisa DeMora, Sapphire Knight, S Nelson, and Winter Travers Photographer: Wander Aguiar Model: John from Wander Aguiar Photography Cover Designer: Betty Shreffler of BJR Cover Designs
🎁 Santa’s Seven Bikers by Betty Shreffler
I thought I’d met the right woman, my ride or die girl. Hot, feisty, full of fire—she made my heart race in and out of the bedroom. I was ready to order a property jacket and declare her as mine. My arrogance, her broken inhibitions, and a fight that changed everything brought us crashing down. Letting go of her was hard, and getting over her was even harder. Five months after our breakup, she comes walking into my clubhouse with a pregnant belly and a declaration that it’s mine. I’m not ready to be a father or forgive her, but it’s help she needs and I’m not going to abandon her, not with Christmas a few weeks away. What I didn’t expect though was to fall in love again—with the mother of my child.

What would be your thoughts if someone just straight up said "sorry, I don't have any comps" or "the only comps I have are old ones or movies, I can't find any suitable comps to recent books" - like if someone was just direct like that. Or would you just suggest they avoid using comps at all? (Sometimes they have to fill them out in QM, though.)
I don't necessarily care too much about comps, I mean, I wouldn't offer to rep somebody based on the comps, or NOT offer if I didn't like the comps but I did like their book -- and I personally don't have a problem with movies or old books, though it would be awesome if at least one of your comps was a relatively recent book.
(That's not a dealbreaker or anything honestly - I'm FINE with it if you write a MG puzzle mystery and comp to WESTING GAME and MYSTERIOUS BENEDICT SOCIETY, even though they are both old -- it makes me understand immediately what you are going for, and that's the goal.)
but that said --
If an agent is *specifically asking* for comps, ideally they would like good, recent comps. Failing that, they'd probably be OK with movies / older comps. And they probably would kinda be put off if somebody just said, "sorry, no can do!"
Like really? There are NO BOOKS you can think of that are ANYTHING like your book? There's no audience your book would appeal to? REALLY?
You see why that's a problematic stance, I hope?
We want books that DO have a potential audience that will like them.
Remember: You aren't trying to PLOT MATCH. Just VIBE MATCH. There has to to be SOME element of your book that will appeal to readers, or what the heck are you doing? "Readers who love the [twisty puzzle mystery, or whatever] of XYZ might also be drawn to MYBOOK." You aren't saying "XYZ IS EXACTLY LIKE MYBOOK" -- you are saying that book has a puzzle mystery, my book has an entirely different puzzle mystery, people who like puzzle mysteries might like my book.
"MYBOOK is a heartfelt contemporary in the vein of Greatly McAuthor and Susanne Writesalot" -- it doesn't have to be anything like Greatly or Susanne's books in terms of plot and characterization, but if those books make the reader cry and your book makes the reader cry in a similar kind of way, BOOM, IT'S A GOOD COMP.
It's truly not such a big ask, you're overthinking it!

it's always confusing when the deleting vs. orphaning works on ao3 discussion goes around and people are like "authors always have the right to control their work."
that has literally never been true.
when "publish" meant hard-copy publish, there could always be copies out there you didn't manage to track down and destroy. if the Catholic Church couldn't get them all when they basically ruled everything, neither could bob mcauthor.
and with digital publishing (which ao3 is), you still don't have control over it. anyone can download a pdf. anyone can fuckin'... screenshot it. paste it into a word file.
authors have never had control over their work once it's published and never will.

re; long winters, i would assume some sort of huter-gatherer lifestyle the more iced over one's land becomes. if the world evolved with these seasons, i would wager a good portion of creatures would hibernate like cicadas while others might have their Long Winter coats to develop, like a generational migration template sort of thing (think of how some world migrations do not happen in one generation of the animal, but multiple, and yet somehow reach their destination).
whaling, seafood, roots and mushrooms would become common. hell some cabbages can survive freezing temperatures. don't forget that many native tribes around the world live near the arctic circle, life in a "long winter" will never be impossible.
if such a planet's regular seasons are as such, then the creatures and plants will have evolved for it too.
that this particular fantasy story i'm low-key lambasting did...little, at fucking all, in either the show i've seen or the book i read, to establish any of this because McAuthor Man(tm) couldn't wait to get to the overtly cruel poor-choices at every turn political intrigue is just like.
ok
like maybe when the final books are released it might be worth it. but also i've heard that wheel of time gets really good at book 7. book 7 of robert jordan's writing at intense length.
at some point y'gotta take the L and just read what you want to read not what you feel like you have to read and i'd rather....Not read these things.

You know what’s obnoxious?
A reader using a published author or other sort of writer as an example of how you SHOULD tell your story. Recently, I had a reader leave a comment explaining to me why a certain published, best-selling author was better than me, and cited this writer’s way of crafting stories ( formulaic and boring, imho) an actual reason (among a laundry list of other reasons) why they disliked the story. "What XYX author does so well bLaH blaaaah, and this totally missed the mark.“
Like… no shit? I don’t have a team of editors helping me pare down the nonsense and word vomit. I know there are weak points. I know I did a crap job of editing the last five chapters. I wrote a 150k story and I got tired. No one is paying me for this, most certainly not the book critic who seems to think that fanfic can or should be held to the same standard and format as published fiction.
If I want to write a 300k domestic fluff pile of garbage that switches from first person to 3rd person in the same chapter, follows several story arcs at once, and throws in a little bit of horror, one-sided pining, and a dog, I should be able to without some know it all trying to tell me "that’s not how Joe McAuthor does it!” Because it’s an unfair comparison, and furthermore, I know I’m not Joe McAuthor, not trying to be, get off my case, go buy one of his books if it bothers you that much.
TL;DR - Don’t compare works of Fanfic against the works of mainstream authors. You may think you’re giving good crit, but you just come off as a nitpicky idiot. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

u’re so right OP

I keep seeing authors who are also the "editors" of anthologies listed in bold letters on the cover. Those books still have an editor employed by the publisher, according to deal announcements. What would that author-editor then actually do? Do they edit alongside the real editor without credentials or training? The idea makes me so nervous. Or is this just a case of the author-editor does smth different but is called editor too for some reason?
Anthologies are typically put together by an author, who is called the Editor of the anthology. It's their brainchild, they create the concept, they invite the other authors to participate, they decide what contributors work will appear where and shape the book as a whole, their agent sells the project, etc.
So for example Fancy McAuthor has an idea for a horror anthology about cats. She pitches the idea to her agent, writes a proposal, gets her author friends to tentatively agree to participate, her agent sells the project. The authors involved do not have a contract with the publisher -- they have contributor agreements with Fancy. Fancy is the one whose name is on the contract, and Fancy (and Fancy's agency) are the ones paying the contributors out of the money that Fancy receives from the publisher.
Fancy wrangles the authors together and is the 'go-between' betwixt the contributors and the publisher. She's responsible for shaping the book as a whole, getting the contributions in the right order, making sure they make sense together, whatever else. And she turns the whole thing in to the editor at the publisher.
The editor at the publisher might have further thoughts, there will be copyediting and all that stuff -- but that editor at the publisher deals with Fancy, not with 25 separate writers.
Make sense?
